Our family favorite, is “A Christmas Story” – we’ve always loved Ralphie and his story about the year he got his Red Ryder B-B Gun. Ever since, my sons ask for that “Holy Grail” of Christmas gifts each year. We know what that means because of the movie!

I never get tired of “A Christmas Story.” The movie is set in Lake County, where I got my first job as a Deputy Prosecutor. My wife, Lisa, even got me a Christmas Story t-shirt with the caption, “You’ll shoot your eye out!” It shows Ralph sobbing after the icicle broke his glasses on Christmas morning.

CASSINFO mobile alerts. We’ve already had one delay this year, but the cold rain/snow mixture pelting my window reminds me that season will be upon us all too soon. Some people think that it’s too early to be thinking about Christmas, but I disagree. Of course, I work a couple of weeks ahead anyway, because I’m always planning for the next month’s issue of INFO, and I’d be glad to look at Christmas decorations as soon as Easter is over (because I LOVE eggs). This year, we’re inviting our fans to help us create a photo album filled with Holiday Memories from Cass County. Post your photos on our Facebook page or you can head to CassCountyOnline.com and click submit to send us a photo that way. Holiday light displays, Christmas decorations, the family at a local event, picking out a Christmas tree — let’s document what the year 2011 was like for our community. By the time I write my next column, Thanksgiving will be a memory, and Christmas will just be a couple of short weeks away. So, Happy Thanksgiving, and don’t forget to enjoy one of MY holiday favorites — the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade celebrates its 85th anniversary this year. I’ll definitely be watching it — and the Thanksgiving night special about its history. I’ll have to get to bed early so I can make it through an early morning of Black Friday shopping and then kicking off the holiday season at the annual Light Up Logansport parade! Here’s to the most wonderful time of the year!

As I write this, the first snowflakes of the season are falling outside my office windows. That doesn’t change the fact that I was annoyed to find frost on my car this morning, but there’s something about snow that seems more magiMichelle Laird DIALS cal. I remember one year when city workers were scrambling because we had such terrible weather that they weren’t sure they’d get the decorations up before the Light Up Logansport parade. I spent the first part of this week adding “Holiday Favorites” to Cass County Calendar. We started that three years ago and you’d be amazed at the number of searches for holiday shows that bring people to our site — year-round! Who knows —maybe “A Very Gaga Thanksgiving” will bring as many visitors as “A Very Brady Christmas” does. As always we invite local churches and religious organizations to post their holiday worship services on Cass County Calendar. That is, after all, the reason for the season. We also get quite a few visitors to our site looking for places to worship on Christmas Eve. This issue, I had to dig out some old favorites of my own — like our ad with directions for signing up to get school delays and cancellations via

Be part of the NFL Experience! The NFL Experience, produced by the National Football League, will be held in the Indiana Convention Center starting in January 2012. Described as a “pro football interactive theme park” the experience offers participatory games, displays, entertainment attractions, kids’ football clinics, free autograph sessions and the largest football memorabilia show ever. NFL Charities donates a $1 million Super Bowl Legacy Grant to benefit youth in the local community from NFL Experience ticket sale proceeds. These funds are used to establish enrichment centers for under-served youth in diverse communities.

According to Young Audiences of Indiana, kids can join the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee team through an exciting opportunity called TICKETS GO ON SALE DECEMBER “Super Kids, Super Welcome!” This project 7 through Ticketmaster engages Hoosier children to help welcome Kids 12 and Under: $20 visitors by completing a Super Kids, Super Welcome coloring card. Youth educators and par- Adults: $25 ents may download the card and accompanying instructions from the official Super Bowl Host Committee (http://www.indianapolissuperbowl.com/super-kids-super-welcome/). It can be printed in black & white or color. Kids are encouraged to draw, color and write their own personal welcome messages on the specially designed cards.The cards will be used to fill each of the contracted hotel rooms with a personal welcome note from across the state! The goals are to collect 18,000 cards, w ith at least one from each of the 92 Indiana counties. The deadline is December 31, 2011 and at press time, about 11,000 cards were still needed.

The NFL (and all sports, for that matter) has strict licensing rules with regards to their trademarks. According to www.nfl.biz, “the NFL Marks include, among others, the NFL shield, the words SUPER BOWL and PRO BOWL, the Super Bowl and Pro Bowl logos, and the team names, nicknames, colors, symbols, emblems, helmet designs and uniform designs.” That’s why you’ll see supermarkets promoting things for “The Big Game” in their advertising. If you want to find out more, nfl.biz has some really interesting stats on who can be considered for their licensing prequalification. Media outlets (like us) can obtain permission to use logos, photos, etc. for editorial use only. A public showing of an NFL game on a screen larger than 55 inches, or charging anyone to watch it, is also off limits.

The Cass County Community Foundation has scheduled scholarship orientation sessions for graduating seniors at all four high schools. Each school will have its own on-site session on the following schedule: In announcing the sessions, the foundation noted that attendance is mandatory for all students wishing to apply for any scholarship the foundation administers, including the Lilly Community Scholarship. In 2010, the foundation awarded 96 scholarships totaling near $200,000. For more information, students can contact their school’s guidance office or call the foundation at 574-722-2200.

The People’s Winery receives state honor On October 20, Indiana Main Street honored the People’s Winery of Logansport with the 2011 Indiana Main Street Best Historic Rehabilitation Award during the statewide Indiana Main Street Conference. The People’s Winery, originally the People’s Bank, was constructed in the 1870’s. After standing vacant since the 1970’s and falling into disrepair, the Cass County Historic Preservation Foundation received a Wabash Heritage Corridor grant with matching funds from Indiana Landmarks. Years later, Brad and Stacie Angle purchased the building in 2010 and began renovations to transform the building into the People’s Winery. Now, artwork from various local artists adorns the walls and the building is used for a variety of events, including book signings, press conferences, and private parties.
