There’s something to be said for tradition. My column is always the last thing I write before sending the paper off to press. This time, I tried to change that, and I just couldn’t do it. I started to write it Michelle Laird DIALS multiple times and the Editor/publisher words just weren’t there. So here I am, with an hour and fifteen minutes left before the files have to be finished, writing away, with the livestream of Day 6 of practice for the Indianapolis 500 on in the background. The “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” is one of our state’s proudest traditions, and I’ve loved it for as long as I can remember. I’d been to the track before, but I was in college before I was actually at the track on Race Day. I’d been in the publishing business for 10 years when I finally decided to look into what sort of media access was available to cover the race. Last year, Phill

Parks Department produces coloring book

Signs commemorate 175th The City of Logansport and the Cass County Community Foundation are co-sponsoring Logansport’s 175th anniversary banners. The 175th anniversary logo was designed by Michelle Dials; the banners were designed by Stefani Closson and Logan’s Landing Association chose the pink coloring to match the downtown’s floral arrangements. ATD Signs and Designs is making the banners which will hang from downtown light posts and existing city entrance signs through the city’s next anniversary on February 17, 2014. The United Way of Cass County is serving as the 175th anniversary committee’s fiscal agent and may be reached by calling 574-753-3533.

The Logansport Parks & Recreation Department’s new coloring book features illustrations created from photos of local youth participating in past activities of the Logansport Parks Department. In addition to the illustrations for children to color, parents will find QR codes to be used with their smart phones that will take them to a website with the most up-to-date information about that activity. This publication is taking the place of the annual recreation guidebook that is usually published in the spring. The cover was produced from paintings created by local artist and owner of Pear Tree Gallery, Teri Partridge. “Spring” depicts children on the playground at the Benjamin Long Recreation Center. “Summer” shows the cranes at Little Turtle Waterway. “Fall” illustrates the Reading Railroad House at Spencer Park. “Winter” is a painting of children snowtubing at Dykeman Park’s sledding hill. Teri has donated these paintings for the exclusive use of the Logansport Parks coloring book. Children in Logansport schools received the coloring book and it will be available at various events throughout the year.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Third grade students and staff at Franklin Elementary School joined Thomas Henderson on Monday, May 13 to construct five 4’x8’ community garden plots. The raised beds sit on a lot west of the school. The students built the raised beds from kits, then joined Henderson in mixing soils to fill the beds in

preparation for planting. Henderson says vegetable consumption quadruples when children are involved in community gardening. Community gardens are underway at Ivy Tech Communtiy College and Peak Community Services, with plans to also construct gardens at Logansport Memorial Hospital

If you’ve never read up on the history of the Revere, you should. That beautiful car owned by the Cass County Historical Society that you see in parades has a soap-opera worthy history! In 1920, the company sponsored a car in the 8th running of the Indianapolis 500. It was driven by Pete Henderson, who drove all 200 laps, finished 10th and received $1,400. Henderson, the first Canadian to enter the race, retired from racing after the 1920 race (his second appearance in the 500). At that time, riding mechanics were required, so that’s why there are two people in the car. Eddie Hearne drove the car in 1921 and placed 13th completing 111 laps.

I would never win a beauty pageant. I just wouldn’t. There’s an old cliche about “having a face for radio”, well....that’s me. This is why there’s no picture of me accompanying this column. Although, I once dated a girl that was in beauty pageants, but hindsight tells me that she had no business entering them. This brings me to this month’s “No, But Seriously”. I had a chance to talk with Bailey Farrer. Current Purdue student, former 4H-er, and reigning Miss Cass County. Oh, she’s also one of the select few that can call themselves a 500 Festival Princess. If you have the pleasure of knowing Bailey in any way, then you know you’re pulling for her to not just be a 500 Festival Princess, but the 500 Festival Queen.... --- Matthew Paul Mix 102 Morning Guy & Mid America Radio Director of Operations So, when you were a little girl, did you ever say to yourself, “SOMEDAY I WILL BE A 500 FESTIVAL PRINCESS”? How do you go from showing hogs to being a princess at one of the biggest sporting events in the world? I’ve actually never been to the Indy 500 race, let alone known that there were 500 Festival Princesses ... had I grown up in Indianapolis- it would have been my all-time dream I’m sure! Since I grew up in Royal Center, I decided to start showing pigs at the age of three. Doing the “normal” thing has never been my thing obviously. How does one store a tiara? Do you have a row of faceless mannequin heads on a dresser wearing each of them? That seems sorta creepy... Although I don’t have a row of mannequins in my room ... I can guarantee you I sure will by the end of the summer. :) Each of my tiaras has its own decorated hat box where it’s stored. That way it stays sparkling and free from any dust that easily accumulates in my room. And now the serious questions....Have you named your tiaras? Are sashes machine washable? - My tiaras don’t have their own name, but they most definitely each contain their own story full of invaluable memories. Now that I think about it, each tiara is part of a different scrapbook that I’ve made full of pictures capturing every minute of their story. As for my sashes, I have a tradition where I obtain as many autographs on the inside of each one. I had my court sign my Miss Cass County sash as well as Justin Moore who put on the concert for the fair last summer. Even though all the signatures are in permanent marker, I’d never risk washing them. Each stain, marking, etc.

Bailey Farrer 500 FESTIVAL PRINCESS

has it’s reason for being on my sash. I’m kind of sentimental haha. So you’ll be spending a lot of time at the track... what do you do while being a princess? Do you get a Corvette? Serving as a 500 Festival Princess has been by far one of the best decisions I’ve made and had the opportunity to experience. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone within the guidelines. We have completed various outreaches all across the state varying from speaking at elementary schools, Girl Scout troops, and Riley’s Children Hospital to working the Mini Marathon pit station, cheering on participants in the Rookie Run, and giving track tours at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I have spent 3-4 days in Indianapolis each week of May so far and will spend 5-6 days in Indianapolis the last two weeks in May. Each of the 33 princesses is matched up with a Board Director who drives a pace car throughout the month that I’ve gotten to ride around in. It’s a blue Camaro instead of a Corvette. You have to smile a lot at these things...is your face up to the challenge? Do you have to do face exercises? Facial p90x? Besides wearing black and white to every event, I wear my smile absolutely everywhere! My face does get tired, but since I enjoy what I’m doing, the smiling comes pretty easy. I never could have imagined the chances to interact with others or the amount of thing I’ve been able to do through the Princess Program. While posing for pictures sometimes, we pull a prank and decide to all just do a goofy face as

opposed to smiling. It helps give our facial muscles a break, even though they’ve gotten to be pretty good at working recently! Facial p90x doesn’t have anything on me...I’ve gotten a workout 10x harder just by being around positive, happy people! Last year Guy Fieri drove the pace car. What if he shows up again and makes awkward advances at you? How do you handle it? Throw hot dogs at him? Wait for him to have a massive heart attack? Hmmm, I would have to discuss his obsession with the peanut butter burger at Triple X on Purdue University’s campus. That place is one of my all-time favs. The chances of him having a massive heart attack from all the crazy kinds of food he eats would probably be just as likely to occur as well however. Who’s gonna win the race? If you say anyone other than Alex Tagliani, you’re wrong... It’s a tie for me between Helio Castroneves and Will Power. I’ve been a huge Helio Castroneves fan ever since he won “Dancing with the Stars”. Also he’s a 3-time winner of the Indy 500 making him a pro at winning. If he doesn’t accomplish a quadruple win, then I’m going to keep my fingers crossed for his Penske teammate and Australian, Will Power. I’ve always been one to root for the underdog, and besides who can’t stand behind someone with the name Will Power as their official name?!
