“It’s not the magic that makes it work. It’s the work that makes it magic.” That’s what Mary Flynn, the Disney Institute facilitator for “Disney’s Approach to Michelle Laird DIALS Leadership Editor/publisher Excellence,” told participants when Ivy Tech hosted the Disney Institute at the Kokomo Event Center on Tuesday, April 24. I was lucky enough to attend as media, at Ivy Tech’s invitation. Those of you who know me know that I love anything Disney. In fact, a few days before the event, I was telling my husband one of the Disney stories that the Mary and her colleague, Susan Pearsall, told us during the one day workshop. Ivy Tech Kokomo has indicated that they’d like to host another Disney Institute workshop in the fall, potentially focusing on customer service. If they do, and it’s an option for you, I would highly encourage you to consider attending to learn about what the facilitators referred to as “the business behind the magic.” It’s not hard for me to work Disney into a conversation, and since the training, I’ve found myself doing it even more — but in a more strategic way. I’ve mentioned my pink Post-It note here before — the one on my computer that says “Promote things that impact the community in positive ways or instigate positive change.” At Cass County Communication Network, we believe strongly that improved community attitudes can inspire positive community change on all levels. We believe community involvement begins with access to information about how to get involved. And we’re committed to improving access to local information in an effort to increase the quality of life in Cass County.

In this issue of Cass County INFO, you’ll read about dozens of volunteers who helped with spring cleanup efforts around the community. You’ll find local festivals and celebrations to attend. We hope that you’ll be inspired to share the great things that are happening in our community with others. During one of my CassCountyCalendar updates on Mix 102, Matthew Paul asked me what I took away from the Disney Institute training. I had to think about that for a while, but this is my answer: Disney cast members don’t tell you that the lines are long or that it’s 100 degrees in the shade. They tell you about the wonderful memories you’re going to create that will last a lifetime. So my summer challenge to you is this: when someone asks you about our community, say something nice. Tell them that Logansport is home to one of Indiana’s best ice cream shops. Tell them that a Logansport dairyman handed the bottle of milk to the winning driver of the 96th running of the Indianapolis 500. When you hear someone complaining that there’s nothing to do, point them to CassCountyCalendar.com, where right now, there are more than 1,000 active events listed, ranging from summer camp registration information to fairs and festivals. In this issue, you’ll find a clip and keep guide to area concerts that, while they aren’t necessarily happening in Cass County, are well within an easy driving distance. I’ve got some confetti, shaped like a certain Mouse, from my day at the Disney Institute to remind me. The little box on the right is a visual reminder for you: “It’s not the magic that makes it work. It’s the work that makes it magic.”

COMMUNITY NEWS May is Foster Care Awareness Month There are approximately 10,000 children in Indiana’s foster care system. A majority of these children enter they system through no fault of their own; they are victims of abuse or neglect. What these children need most is stability, love, compassion and someone they can rely on. Indiana, like most other states, lacks a sufficient number of well matched, available foster parents. Most children in care will eventually reunite with their families, while some will find a home with relatives or extended family members. A few will become members of new families through adoption. The ultimate goal of foster care in Indiana is to provide children with a safe, permanent home. Foster parents have a unique opportunity to provide a temporary home for a child to live in a safe, nurturing, caring environment. Cass County is looking for people interested in becoming foster parents. If you have been wondering what you can do to make a difference in the lives of children in your community then here is your chance. Being a foster parent is not just opening your home, providing food, clothing and shelter; it is an act of compassion, advocacy and love. Foster care orientation meetings are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on May 22 in Peru for individuals in Cass, Fulton, Howard, Miami and Wabash counties who are interested in becoming foster parents. Visit www.in.gov/dcs/foster for more information or contact Amy Rowbury, Regional Foster Care Specialist, Cass and Miami County Office at 765-473-6611 ext. 12285. 4 | Cass County INfo: | May 2012

Award moves Franklin 's playground plans forward Franklin Elementary was named the recipient of Logansport Memorial Hospital’s fifth and final $10,000 award for the five-year Body Mass Index (BMI) study of Cass County school This award was made possible by a grant from the McTaggart Charitable Trust. The purpose of the Healthy Kids BMI Initiative has been to measure the improvement in the health of Cass County school children through a five-year BMI study. Elementary schools who participated this year were All Saints, Caston, Columbia, Fairview, Franklin, Landis and Pioneer. Columbia and Lincoln Middle Schools were also part of the Healthy Kids BMI Initiative. All schools in Cass County were encouraged to participate. “Our goal is to determine if the emphasis placed on proper nutrition and exercise will help children choose healthy habits and decrease the incidence of obesity that leads to diabetes and other detrimental chronic diseases,” explains Vicki Byrd, Vice-President of Planning and Development at Logansport Memorial Hospital. “The information we have collected from this project may now serve as the basis for future initiatives that impact the health habits of our children in different ways. Wherever we go next, we are grateful for the enthusiastic support from our local schools over these past five years and hope to continue building on those partnerships to address future health needs for our children in the community.”

Franklin Elementary Principal Hayley LaDow excitedly accepts the $10,000 award from the Logansport Memorial Hospital Foundation for her school! Logansport Schools Superintendent Michele Starkey, Foundation Past President Mike Meagher and Foundation President Michael Bowditch are also on hand to extend their congratulations.

Franklin students Malia Roberts and Sevastian Lopez show the school’s progress toward the playground project. With the $10,000 BMI award, the school has reached $30,000 toward the project, but is still $5,000 short. For more information about the project, contact Fairview Principal Haley Ladow at 574-722-3200.

Pam Leeman and Jim Michaels have been talking about beautifying Logansport’s south side for more than two years. In September, they convened a meeting of the Southside Gateway Committee. In just seven months, the group managed to raise more than $10,000, including a match from the Cass County Community Foundation. Flower baskets along Main Street and Burlington Avenue are part of Phase 1 of the Southside Beautification Project and banners are being finalized for the bridges. The pink flower baskets in Downtown Logansport are a project of Logan’s Landing. We applaud both groups for their investment in our community!

Celebrating 75! United Way of Cass County is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2012 and each month, we’ll highlight a United Way agency or program. This month, we’re focusing on the Boy Scouts of America. The Boy Scouts of America and the United Way share a long history of working together. For most United Ways, the Boy Scouts was one of the originally funded agencies when that United Way was formed. In 2011 445 youth and 97 adult leaders were involved in Scouting in Cass County. With the support of Cass County United Way Sagamore Council, our local BSA Council, is able to provide a variety of services to local

leaders, incuding training for all adult leaders, extensive program materials, local Boy Scout camps, and a team of both volunteer and professional scouters available to answer questions and provide advice. Through the support of Cass County and other United Ways, the future of Sagamore Council and the Boy Scouts of America looks very bright as together we serve the future leaders of our community, state, and nation.

Learn more about Boy Scouts of America and its programs and services, and about other United Way agencies, by clicking the 75th anniversary logo on CassCountyOnline.com.

Cass County Visitors Bureau looks forward to summer fun in Cass Co.

Calendar

Column by Cass County Visitors Bureau The Cass County Visitors Bureau is anticipating a great summer, kicking off the second weekend in June with the Med Flory Jazz & Blues Festival. The Festival starts on Friday, June 8 with great sound filling the downtown from the Little Turtle Waterway Plaza for the two-day event. The 4th of July is celebrated in grand style in Cass County. You can look forward to a legendary display of fireworks like those presented each year in Walton, and at Riverside Park in Logansport or the roar of the races which you will find at the Twelve Mile 500 Lawnmower Races at Plank Hill Park in Twelve Mile. The second full week of July we welcome people from surrounding counties to visit our 4-H Fair. From the colored lights and smell of fair food along the midway to the exhibits of the hard working 4-H club members, it is fun for all ages. In the heat of August, catching a breeze off the Wabash River might be just the ticket, and that is where you will find

all of your friends as they enjoy the Taste of Cass County. Food vendors, countywide, set up in booths along the Little Turtle Waterway Plaza to let us purchase samplings of their menu. A variety of music plays in the beer tent and on the lawn as we relax and enjoy the festivities. We close our summer festival season with another great festival brought to us by the Cass County Art Alliance. The third Saturday in September is Art on the Avenue. The CCAA works to bring an eclectic group of artist to downtown Logansport and their “Kids Corner” is a huge hit. Paired with the festival again this year is the third Annual 2 Rivers on 2 Wheels Bike Tour. Green space is not at a minimum in Cass County and will be enjoyed by youngsters and oldsters alike this season. Spencer Park, Riverside Park, Plank Hill Park, Rea Park and France Park will be overflowing with families and fun! Keep an eye out for the Logansport Parks Department for their summertime programs.
