Springing Forward With winter behind us, find something fun to do in Cass County!

This month certainly lived up to its reputation — in like a lion. And now that Jim Irsay and Peyton Manning have given us the answer, we can finally wrap up football season, right? All kidding aside, Michelle Laird DIALS Editor/publisher March has been rough. We had a relatively mild winter, compared to some recent years, but I just read a weather.com article that says the nation has already seen three times the average number of tornadoes for this time of year. I recently added a “Severe Weather Preparedness Guide” to Cass County Online. It includes numbers you may need in the event of severe

spring weather — specifically thunderstorms, tornadoes and floods. Since we launched our websites, we’ve been astounded at the number of people who turn to us during a power outage, as we rely on the glowing blue screens of our tablets and cell phones to keep us connected. In addition to our posts on Facebook, we also text message weather alerts via CASSINFO mobile alerts. If you’d like to sign up, simply text the word CASSINFO to 46786 and wait for a confirmation message. We monitor weather situations closely and work with dispatch and Cass County Emergency Management. When there’s a weather alert, we’ll send you a CASSINFO text message letting you know about it. The idea isn’t to replace traditional forms of media, like your weather radio — it’s another way to notify you in our ever-connected world. There’s no charge for the service on our end, but if you don’t have an unlimited text package, charges from your carrier may apply. By subscribing, you’ll also receive local deals and reminders sponsored by advertisers who make the CASSINFO service possible. And in addition to weather updates, we’ll notify you about things like road closures that may impact travel, parking restrictions or planned power outages. The service is available 24/7, though we limit the messages we send between 9 a.m. and 6 a.m. to emergency information. It’s a unique service and, like all of Cass County Communication Network’s services, it’s one we’re proud to be able to offer to Cass County. And, for those of you who still like to be able to clip things out and stick them on the fridge (the original Pinterest?) — you can reach LMU after hours at 574-753-6236. You can never have too many sources of local information.
