Remembering a friend

July 14 —August 12, 2014

The cover of this issue is more somber than usual. A week of smiles and laughter concluded with a night of tears and hugs as 4-Hers came together to remember Lauren Bashore, a fellow student who was killed just a few hours earlier in a horrific accident. The Code of Ethics of the Society of Professional Journalists calls on journalists to do the following: 1) Seek truth and report it. 2) Minimize Harm 3) Act independently. Workmans donate $50,000 for Huston Park playground equipment Have old tires to recycle?

An important deadline is approaching for Cass County residents and farmers, who are interested in bringing in tires for the annual collection effort, hosted by the Cass County Solid Waste Management District. The program, which takes place by appointment only, will draw to a close at the end of the month. To date, two complete semi loads of tires have been brought in for recycling, and a third semi is now in place. To schedule an appointment, just contact the CCSWMD Office at: (574) 732-9253. The first ten car or small truck tires are accepted free, with each additional tire costing just $2.00. Semi tires are five dollars each, with no limit, and tractor tires are $15.00 each for the first four, and $30.00 for tractor tires five through ten. Since the program began in Mid-April, well over 100 appointments for tires have been made. This collection effort is in place for Cass County residents and farmers only, not for businesses.

The Logansport Parks & Recreation Board has announced that Dave and Beth Workman, owners of Workman and Associates have donated $50,000 for the purchase of the playground equipment which is already installed at Huston Park. This gift by Dave and Beth Workman is one of several significant gifts that have made the construction of Huston Park possible. Huston Park received $560,000 from the McTaggart Charitable Trust, $100,000 from Mike Anderson Auto Group, $50,000 from Logansport Savings Bank, and an additional $50,000 each from two anonymous donors. In addition, the Logansport Parks Department received 2-$200,000 grants from the Land & Water Conservation Fund which was matched with the land itself through the land donation by the Harry H. Huston Family, in his memory. Janet Fawley, Parks Administrator, said that work continues for the park. “We have nearly completed Phase 1 of the project. We hope to close out our contract with Myers Construction Management Inc., and also complete 2 other small projects that include a new picnic shelter, and the final layer of asphalt on the parking lot. Once these projects are complete, we hope to have a community celebration, highlighting Huston Park’s many attributes, and how the community will be able to use the park.”

The Rotary Club meets on Mondays at noon at Boondockers. To learn more about the local club or to become a member, contact Vicki Byrd at 574-753-1414. SHARED BY VICKI BYRD LEFT: A federal appeals court struck down Indiana’s ban on same-sex marriages June 25. Michael McCarty and John Klein say that on June 26, they were the first couple to be issued a samesex marriage license in Cass County. They were married that afternoon in a ceremony at Spencer Park. “Even as long as we’ve been together, i was very emotional,” McCarty shared. “No longer being thought of as a 2nd class citizen, but being seen as a human being who loves and is loved. Having all of both of our families and many of our friends there to support us meant so much. All that was missing was his dad who passed away last fall and my mother who passed away 5 years ago this fall. Over all it was a beautiful day and a great day to be not just a proud person, but a proud Hoosier. “ The status of their marriage, and many others remains in limbo, however. The state’s attorney general appealed the rulling, but in the three-day window between June 25 and 27, many samesex couples around the state wed. On Monday, July 7, the governor’s chief counsel issued a memo that agencies are to proceed as though the District Court order had not been issued. PHOTO SHARED BY MICHAEL MCCARTY
