CASSINFO MOBILE ALERTS

As always, summer is moving right along! If this is your first time thumbing through a copy of Cass County INFO, welcome! This publication is part of the Cass County Michelle Laird DIALS Communication Editor/publisher Network, published by Existential Media LLC. We’re a locally-owned busines and we’re proud to have just celebrated our second anniversary serving Cass County. Longtime fans will know that this publication began as a bilingual Spanish newspaper. (And those who’ve been reading even longer might remember that the initial concept started back in 2002 with an all-Spanish newspaper — bonus points if you can remember what it was called. Answer appears at end of column. I’ve always wanted to write that.) Anyway, we’ve come a long way since that first issue, which is still tucked away on a shelf in my office. We still publish a FREE monthly newsEditorial Information Views expressed are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the position of the Cass County Communication Network or its parent company, Existential Media LLC. paper, but we also provide news in so many other ways. Our websites, www.casscountycalendar.com and www.casscountyonline.com are updated daily. We also offer CASSINFO mobile alerts, which deliver local information, reminders and deals via text message. As much as I complain about deadlines (I’d totally rather be at the pool right now), I still love putting together each issue of Cass County INFO, fitting as many little chunks of information as I possibly can into the space that’s allotted, and getting to put my graphic design skills to use. Along the way, I’ve learned lots of new skills that I enjoy putting to the test — expressing my thoughts in 140 characters or less, measuring visits to our websites and, once in a while, dabbling in HTML, but I still love it when I finally have that first copy of Cass County INFO in hand and can flip through its pages. Though we communicate with our fans daily on our Facebook pages, I still look forward to fair week because we get to see so many of them in person! We’ll move our temporary digs into Merchants Building #2 in a couple of days and we’ll spend 20 hours of our work week there, distributing copies of this newspaper, signing people up for our e-mail newsletter and telling them about CASSINFO mobile alerts. I’m excited about how our business is growing! It’s taken a long time but to those of you who’ve been there from the very beginning, I can’t thank you enough. If you’re new to the Cass County Communication Network, I hope you’ll take time to learn more about our business. We’re excited about all the great things that are happening in our community and we’re even more excited to be able to help share them. Thanks for reading!

Logansport Memorial Hospital assists Cass County Honor Guard with wheelchair donation John Scott, a member of the Cass County Honor Guard, who attends military funerals at Mount Hope Cemetery quite regularly, noticed a need and decided to do something about it. “I couldn’t believe that we hadn’t thought of it before, but we definitely needed a wheelchair to use at these funerals,” said John. “I began to think about where I might find one, and because I’ve volunteered regularly at the hospital, I decided to ask them. They quickly responded after receiving proper approvals, and I was asked to stop by the hospital to pick up the wheelchair they would gladly give us. We are very grateful for this donation and for their support.” 4 | Cass County INfo: | July 2012

Type O negative is the universal blood type and can be transfused to anyone who needs blood. It’s the blood type doctors turn to first in an emergency situation when there is no time to match a patient’s blood type. Brett Milburn, of Cass County, Zachary Slocum and Dakota Hayden, both of Fulton County, completed merit badges in emergency preparedness and first aid. All three have obtained the rank of Life Scout and the new badges are required as they work towards Eagle Scout. During the week, all three also obtained an additional merit badge while qualifying with a muzzleloader. Despite being tied for the smallest troop of the sixteen camping during the week, Troop 215 was able to win the Best Campsite Award. Two adult volunteers, who supervised the scouts of Troop 215, Tony Slocum of Fulton County and Brook Milburn of Cass County won shooting awards during the Scout Master Shootout. Tony Slocum placed first in the muzzleloader competition while Milburn won the shotgun portion of the competition. Both also won shooting badges for being Camp Buffalo 100 Yard Marksmen. They each placed a group of 10 rounds in a target placed at a distance of 100 yards. All three scouts will be eighth graders at Caston School this fall. Photo shared by Tony Slocum.
