We’re more than halfway through 2013. Seriously? I love designing the fair issue of Cass County INFO every year. But, spoiler alert... It has back to school info in it. SERIOUSLY. When the next issue of INFO comes out, all of the CassCounty school corporations will be back in school. But there’s still so much of summer left! I’m writing this on July 4 and we’re about to head out on our annual trek to photograph the parades. As I was driving to the office this Michelle Laird DIALS Editor/publisher morning, it was foggy and everything looked beautiful. I stopped at the City Building to take a picture as the sun was breaking through the clouds. Within three hours of posting it, it’s gotten 200 likes and 15 shares. Mike Clark Tribute Golf Outing Saturday, July 20 The Lewis Cass Band Boosters and Walton’s Little Mountain Golf Course in Walton will be hosting the Mike Clark Tribute Golf Outing as a major fundraiser towards the construction of a new storage building for the band trailers and equipment. Finding enough space to store and protect the trailers and equipment has always been a difficult task. This new storage building will provide the much needed space necessary to properly house and maintain the band’s investments. This building initiative was launched by longtime Band Director, Mike Clark. Sadly, Mike passed away in October 2012 after a valiant battle with cancer. Prior to his death, Mike approached Mr. Terry Collins about having a golf outing to raise funds for the building. Mr. Collins graciously approved and we have now put together an event for

Smith, who’s now the Digital Assets Manager for the Bailiwick Chicago Collective, is also the recipient of a Jeff Award. Smith received the Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical Jeff Award for her performance as Wife/Aunt Monica in “See What I Wanna See”, Bailiwick Chicago earlier this year. The Jeff Awards honors outstanding theatre artists and is committed to celebrating the vitality of Chicago area theatre by recognizing excellence through its recommendations, awards and honors. Come see us at the Cass County Fair!

Ivy Tech. As good as money in the bank!

The Cass County Community Foundation will once again sponsor a “Keep the Music Playing” contest at the Cass County 4-H Fair. CCCF will have donation containers for Caston, Lewis Cass, Logansport and Pioneer music groups and will match those donations up to a total of $500 per school for the week. Visitors can stop by the CCCF booth in Merchants Building #1 and “cast their vote” for their favorite school by placing a donation of any size in that school’s container. Donations will be matched dollar for dollar up to the school’s $500 total. Music students from each school will be on hand to promote their schools and help raise awareness of their talents and the need as a community to help that talent grow. “This is a friendly competition for our young music students that allows us to help them with a little additional funding,” CCCF President, Deanna Crispen said. With CCCF matching contributions last year a little over $3,000 was awarded to support the four school’s music programs. Crispen noted that all contributions are tax deductible and anyone who makes a donation by check will receive a written receipt of their donation. All fairgoers are encouraged to visit the Community Foundation booth and cast their vote! For more information call CCCF at 574-722-2200.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 He can’t wait to check out the new zip line at France Park, and of course, we’ll be at the fair! We find ourselves at lots of other things that I probably wouldn’t know about if my job didn’t require me to be there. Last month was a prime example. I was so excited to see more than 170 people turn out for a forum about the proposed new power plant. It’s important to get involved in the discussions that are happening in our community. Our elected officials meet frequently to make decisions that impact us, as residents. Recently, the Logansport City Council invited people to share their thoughts on several ordinances, and that input helped them to make some changes to the proposed rules going forward. When people attend meetings and speak up and voice their thoughts, opinions and questions, it helps our elected officials to do their jobs – and represent the people who elected them. Sometimes, the meetings are long, boring and confusing. But if you have a question, a comment or a concern, voicing it is an important part of what we, as Americans, have the freedom to do. So I hope the people who attended the forum to learn more continue to be involved. The City Council meets on the first Monday of every month, and they call some special meetings from time to time. The county commissioners meet on the first Monday at 1 p.m. and the third Monday at 6 p.m., and the county council meets at 9 a.m. on the third Friday of the month. There are numerous other boards and commissions that meet as well, and we try to post all their agendas on casscountycalendar.com. Even if you can’t attend all the meetings, pay attention to what’s going on. Our community’s leaders have some big plans for Cass County and as residents, we should all be interested in what’s happening around us. My mission, through Cass County Communication Network and in my capacity as news director for Mid-America Radio, is to keep people informed about what’s going on in our community. But all of us, as residents, need to make it our mission to pay attention to what’s going on around us. Enjoy the rest of the summer and maybe I’ll see you at the fair ... or a local meeting ... or, if you’re more adventurous than me, screaming by me at 50 mph on the zipline at France Park.

BAKER Jeff Baker is one the unsung heroes our area. Why? Because if it weren’t for him, loads of people wouldn’t get to work, the grocery store, doctor’s appointments, etc. Jeff is a driver for Cass Area Transit. “Cass Transit is very important to the people of Logansport and surrounding areas,” Jeff says. “We transport between 500-800 passengers per day. These are people going to and from work, doctor appointments, grocery shopping, bill paying and special events. During the school year we transport many students to all the schools in the county, plus Ivy Tech and Trine. All passengers are welcome from five years to however old they are. If you need a ride, Cass Transit is there and we’re cheaper than a taxi.” Okay, then! Let’s get to it...

— Matthew Paul Mix 102 Morning Guy Director of Operations WLHM/WSAL/WHZR

You drive around town for hours at a time....when your shift is over, how bad does your butt hurt? Do you just go numb after a while? After driving around town for eight hours, and usually about a hundred miles a day, my butt feels pretty numb. It depends on which bus you drive that day. Every now and then you get out and load a passenger using the lift or help load their groceries. This gives your butt a chance to recover. Is there a line of seniority that determines who gets the “nice” buses? I don’t think so. Some drivers go out of town and others are in town. Every vehicle is used daily and they all have many hard miles on them. Most range from 100,000 to 500,000 miles. Donations and contrbutions are always welcome to maintain and continue the service Cass Transit provides to the people of Logansport and Cass County. No. but seriously...Have you ever gotten lost while trying to find a place? You bet. I have been on streets I never even knew were in the city. One day, I took a passenger to Royal Center, and I sure felt like I was lost and my passenger was just enjoying the ride. There’s one story about a driver who couldn’t find his passenger outside a store. After several discussions with the dispatcher, the driver realized he was in front of the wrong store. Since then, that driver has received a map. The Cass Transit is based out of the Cass County Senior Center building. Ever go inside and play a hand of bridge? I have never played bridge or bingo there, but after many hours of driving I’ve stopped many times for a pit stop before my bladder explodes.
