January 11 — February 17, 2013

Welcome to 2013! I’ve decided that this year is going to be great. I’m going with what’s on a sign that my mom and I bought my sister around this time last year — back when Michelle Laird DIALS Peyton Manning was Editor/publisher still a Colt and Indianapolis was getting ready to host the “Big Game.” That’s it to the right, courtesy of Pinterest. On December 21, I was hired as the news director at Mid America Radio Group in Logansport. That means I’m doing news, every day, for Mix 102, WSAL and Hoosier Country 103.7 (which is where I used to be back in 2008.) Don’t worry — Cass County Communication Network will still be here and will continue to grow.

CASSINFO MOBILE ALERTS

On page 6, you’ll find a new feature. Not long after I started at the radio stations, we were all standing around chatting, as we often do after 9 a.m., and Matthew Paul asked me if I was going to make a big deal about my new gig in INFO. I figured I’d write a little bit about it here, but he asked me if he could do an interview. Having a Q&A with a local person has been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, but when you do news, people answer your questions much differently than they do when you’re the morning guy. So in this issue, you’ll find the first edition of his new column called “No, but seriously ...” If you like it, it could become a regular feature. Things like that are what I’m most excited about with this new endeavor. On the back page of this issue, you’ll see that we’re partnering with Mid America Radio to throw a party on February 17 — we’re calling it Founder’s Day Extravaganza! Logansport celebrates its 175th anniversary that day, and we’ve got some huge surprises in the works. You’ll be hearing more about it as the date gets closer, so as always, keep checking www.casscountycalendar.com for more details, and listen to our local radio stations — Mix 102, WSAL and Hoosier Country 103.7 for opportunities to win great prizes. Here’s to a great 2013! I’ll talk to you at the top of the hour weekdays on 102.3, 103.7 and 1230 AM, and in the meantime, as usual, you can find local news and information at www. casscountyonline.com!

Cost of stamps goes up January 27 The price for First-Class Mail single-piece letters will increase by a penny when prices change this month. The new 46 cent Forever stamps will allow customers to mail letters to any location in the United States. Postcards will also see a 1-cent increase, to 33 cents. There will also be new domestic retail pricing for Priority Mail Flat Rate products. Beginning early next year, the Postal Service will also introduce a First-Class Mail Global Forever Stamp that will allow customers to mail letters anywhere in the world for one set price of $1.10. The increases are effective January 27, 2013.

Tax season starts this month The IRS plans to open its 2013 filing season and begin processing individual income tax returns on January 30. More information is available on www.irs.gov. Indiana taxpayers will see automatic taxpayer refunds, Governor Mitch Daniels announced in November. Hoosiers who file individual returns next year will receive a credit of $111 and joint filers will receive a credit of $222 because of the state’s automatic taxpayer refund (ATR). The credit will be applied when taxpayers fill out their 2012 income tax forms in 2013. Indiana closed the 2012 Fiscal Year with reserves of $2.155 billion or 15 percent of the state’s budget. In 2011, the Indiana General Assembly approved the governor’s plan for an automatic taxpayer refund if the state’s reserves exceeded 10 percent at the end of the budget year that ended on June 30.

CCCF announces grant to purchase mobile community stage The Cass County Community Foundation will be celebrating their 20th anniversary throughout 2013 with town hall meetings, events, and some surprises. One of those surprises was revealed on Dec. 27 during a press conference at Riverside Park. The foundation will invest nearly $145,000 for the purchase of a mobile community stage. The project is the result of a collaboration between the Community Founda-

tion and four community partner organizations: Cass County 4-H, Cass County Arts Alliance, Logan’s Landing and the Logansport Parks Department. The groups received a $40,000 grant to get started last summer, but as they began looking toward their 20th anniversary, the CCCF board decided to kickoff the celebration by fully-funding the purchase. The Community Foundation was established Oct. 7, 1993. Look for more information about their 20th anniversary events throughout the year.

New fund will benefit community grants program A new fund whose annual income can be used for community grants, like the one to purchase a mobile community stage, has been established through the Cass County Community Foundation. The Judge Norman L. and Ruth B. Kiesling Unrestricted Charitable Fund. was established by the Kiesling’s son, John Kiesling and daughter, Marlene Konsek in memory of their parents.

Judge Kiesling was born in Logansport in 1912, graduated from LHS and earned a bachelor of arts from Valparaiso University and a law degree in 1935. Norman served as a prosecuting attorney prior to being called to the US Navy during WWII. He returned to Cass County and practiced law until 1958. He served as judge of the Cass County Circuit Court for 24 years and was elected a state representative in 1949.

United Way of Cass County exceeds 2012 campaign goal

Ten member agencies and two funded programs will benefit from the funds raised by United Way of Cass County: • Big Brothers Big Sisters Community-based & school-based mentoring • Boy Scouts Comprehensive Youth Development • Cass County Family Y After school and summer day camp, Financial Assistance, and Teen Action Program • Girl Scouts Youth Programs-troop activities, summer day camps, and individual girl’s programs) • Mental Health America Drop-In Center, Assistance to Individuals • Peak Community Services Sheltered Workshop • Cass Area Transit Elderly/Disabled/Community Transportation • American Red Cross Biomedical, Disaster and Armed Forces Emergency Services • Food Finders Food Distributed, • Salvation Army Lunch Program, Specific Assistance to Individuals, Food Pantry • Backpack program (Logansport) • Cass County Reading Railroad Begindergarten Program

United Way’s campaign chairman, Joe Johnson, hosted his Campaign Cabinet and the funded agencies during a January 10 luncheon to thank them and announce that they had achieved victory by exceeding the 2012 campaign goal. The goal was $600,075 in honor of United Way of Cass County’s 75th anniversary. On March 8, the United Way of Cass County will host its 75th Anniversary Gala in place of the traditional annual meeting and victory celebration. At the luncheon on January 10, Johnson thanked his volunteers and funded agencies for their hard work on the campaign. As a result, $625,972 has been raised to date. Johnson expressed his gratitude to the donors of Cass County. He and his large team of volunteers spent the year talking before numerous employee groups helping them to understand how their donation would be used. “Joe’s message was down to earth and passionate,” says United Way executive director Joyce Mayhill. Mayhill explained that Johnson “simply told his story and the story of his employees” at The Andersons in Walton and why they believe in giving to the United Way. Mayhill and Johnson agree that getting people involved and inside the agencies help them understand how the agencies serve people in our community and where the money goes. This is accomplished through activities such as Live United Day. Johnson concluded the celebration by asking everyone to support the 2013 campaign chairman and handed the gavel over to Logansport Memorial Hospital’s CEO David Ameen. REMINDER: It’s flu season and Logansport Memorial Hospital has implemented visitor restrictions. Only 2 adults at a time and no children under 14.

Profile

Michelle Dials and I go way back. All the way to 2009! When I first heard what was she was doing with casscountycalendar.com, I thought “HEY! I need to get her on the air!” And so, every Thursday she comes on my show at 7:20 a.m. for a few minutes and we discuss area events and happenings. Recently it was announced that Michelle would be the new News Director (or News Diva if you’re in the inner circle) of Mid America Radio Logansport. It takes a special person to work and thrive at our establishment. I’ll find out if she has what it takes...

print media though. In 2008, I kind of stumbled into doing news on Hoosier Country 103.7 and actually put my degree to good use. We started CassCountyCalendar in 2009 and Cass County Communication Network in 2010. When the news director job opened up last month, it seemed like a perfect fit. So no, I don’t need to take over the world ... It’s enough to know that local people trust me when they need to know something. It’s also a huge responsibility, and one that I take really seriously. You’re also a big fan of Glee...Has it crossed your mind to do a newscast entirely in song? If so, what song would it be? You know, it actually did, but I don’t sing in public.... I’d really like to have a Glee music day though — it could even just be original songs that have been on Glee played in order of appearance on the show. One of the most important things we do is the school lunch menus...and in case you didn’t know, you’ll be required to add at least one sound effect when we read them...What do you plan on doing? Unfortunately, I don’t think that’s in my contract. If you were to switch careers and become a competitive eater, what food-eating would you compete in? Good question. I’ve never really considered it, but I’d say pizza, watermelon and noodles are the most likely choices. Are you half as excited to be working with us as we are to work with you? Yes. (That’s the kind of answer that’s sometimes ok in print, but not ok in radio.)

The Twelve Mile Christmas Pageant has been held every December since 1970 in Plank Hill Park. RICK WOODALL, who submitted this photo, shares: “The pageant was started by Clifton Skinner, an employee at Bunker Hill Air Force Base (now Grissom Air Reserve Base), who based part of the pageant on a tradition among the base’s airmen of placing Christmas-themed panels in front of their barracks.”
