S(no)w more. I’m officially over the snow. We didn’t get hit with the 20 inches of snow that were predicted January 31 — February 2, 2011, but what we got was more than enough for me. We knew we’d need to keep tabs on the blizzard, but we were MICHELLE LAIRD DIALS totally blown away (no pun EDITOR/PUBLISHER intended) by the response to our weather coverage. We’ve offered school delays and cancellations for over a year, but starting Tuesday night, my phone began ringing with other community closings, delays and cancellations. I found myself coming down with a bad cold early that week and found myself camped on the couch sick for much of the blizzard. Melissa Laird kept Cass County Online updated throughout the weather event, pushing information out via our Facebook pages and keeping hundreds of people informed via CASSINFO text message alerts. When the power went out and the Cass County chapter of the Red Cross set up emergency shelters, we were able to put that information directly in the hands of our text subscribers as soon as we were notified, despite the lack of electricity. The following week, when the city conducted snow removal efforts downtown, we used the texts to spread the word about that too. Since we launched the Cass County Communication Network in July, we’ve strived to find ways to make it easy for people to know and share what’s going on in our community. I think it’s safe to say we did that during the blizzard. I can’t thank Melissa enough for keeping our operations up and running when much of the Midwest was essentially shut down for three days. While I’m hoping we’ve seen the bulk of the snow for this winter, spring weather can be just as tumultuous. We hope you’ll continue to turn to the Cass County Communication Network when you need to know what’s going on in our community. Daylight Saving Time starts soon, and the driveins are opening as I write this. Warm weather can’t be too far away.

REMINDERS / UPDATES / OPPORTUNITIES

past few years, Cass County was one of three pilot counties that used vote centers for elections. New legislation passed this year will allow the county to continue to use vote centers, and make vote centers an option for all Indiana counties. Upcoming dates to remember: • Deadline for candidates to file for May primary election:, in which the parties will select their candidates for mayor, city council and city clerk-treasurer: Feb. 18 • Deadline to register to vote in May primary: April 4 • Primary Election Day: May 3 The Cass County Communication Network will have candidate information, voter registration information and voting dates as the election approaches, and election results on Election Night. Legislative updates There’s a lot of uncertainty when it comes to bills currently under consideration by the state legislature. The Cass County schools will have a town hall meeting at 6 p.m. on February 23 at Calvary Presbyterian Church to inform local citizens of the pending legislation that will have an impact on public education in Indiana. Area Five, AARP and Indiana Association of Area Agencies on Aging (IAAAA) are asking citizens to join them for a rally for Independence in Indianapolis on March 29. Attendees must register through Area Five Agency by calling 1-800-654-9421 by March 11, 2011. Registration will provide you with transportation, a seat at the rally and a complimentary boxed lunch. More details can be found on casscountycalendar.com.

CLEAR increases adult ed options

Spring Forward! Daylight Saving Time starts at 2 a.m. on March 13.

The Cass-Logan Educational Attainment Resource (CLEAR) is now offering GED testing and English as a Second Language classes, in addition to the adult basic education courses it began offering in the fall. CLEAR is was developed by the LogansportCass County Economic Development Foundation and is funded primarily through Federal Title II funds. LEDF president Skip Kuker has testifi ed before the state legislature in recent weeks concerning House Bill 1340 and Senate Bill 482, which would assign responsibility for adult education to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. “These bills are crucial to the ability to increase adult learning in Cass County, Kuker said. “The funds that are under consideration can only be used by school systems for adult education (ABE) and GED. Since more

school systems, seven last year, are dropping ABE/GED, it makes funds available for other entities to continue adult education services throughout the state. CLEAR will administer the GED test on February 12, March 5 and 12, and April 9 and 16. Those interested in taking the test must register before the test day. The test fee is $60 and must be paid in cash and in advance of the test. Three forms of ID are required at the time of registration, including a government issued photo ID. 17-year-olds must have an Indiana Exit from the last school attended, and also must have passed the practice test. CLEAR is housed in the former Ivy Tech Building at 2815 E. Market St. For more information about the Adult Basic Education or English as a Second Language classes, or to register for class or the test, call 574.721.3155.
