Happy 175th Birthday LOGANSPORT

#partyhardlogansport

#logan175

Last year, Lita Rouser called and asked if I’d be interested in being a part of a committee that was organizing a year-long celebration of the City of Logansport’s 175th anniversary. Naturally, I said Michelle Laird DIALS yes. More specifically, Editor/publisher I agreed to help with marketing the events. I pulled together a marketing subcommittee and as we began talking, Matthew Paul and I latched onto the idea of the Mid-America Radio Group and Cass County Communication Network partnering to host a Founders Day party. We mentioned our idea to Dan Keister, the general manager at the radio stations, long before I started working there, and all of a sudden, we were planning a party. An Extravaganza, to be more specific. A Founders Day Extravaganza hosted by

Mid-America Radio Group and Cass County Communication Network, and as of this writing, sponsored in part by Unique Travel, Martin’s Supermarket, Frontier Communications, Creative Promotions and The Trophy Factory, Logansport Savings Bank, Mike Anderson Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep, Jarrell Orthodontics, Cass County Dentzel Carousel, Logansport Parks and Recreation Department, Cass County Reading Railroad, Cass County Historical Society, Logansport Art Association and Logansport HS Berryettes. We knew early on that Unique Travel would be giving one lucky winner a trip to Las Vegas and Matthew came up with a really cool way to award the prize — we qualified listeners on Mix 102, WSAL and Hoosier Country 103.7 and CASSINFO mobile alert subscribers. The presents are all wrapped and our lucky contestants will each get to open one at the Founders Day Extravaganza. One of them contains the trip to Vegas; another lucky winner gets a birthday party at the Cass County Family Y courtesy of Jarrell Orthodontics! To qualify to participate, CASSINFO subscribers were asked to reply with a birthday wish for the City of Logansport. We ended up with HUNDREDS of texts and I enjoyed reading them so much that some of them are included on page 7 — right next to Matthew’s awesome interview and Phill’s fantastic photo of Thelma Conrad from the Cass County Historical Society, who went right along with our humorous look at 175 years of Logansport history. This week, we’ve been doing a Logansport history theme on the World’s Fastest Game Show in the mornings, and it’s been so much fun looking back at our community in its heyday. There are a whole year’s worth of celebrations planned and I can’t wait to see how the year unfolds. There’s also a lot happening in Cass County right now — things that could mean big changes for the entire community going forward. I can only hope that 25 years from now, the

Did you know... • Logansport Memorial Hospital is currently conducting a comprehensive Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) to identify and prioritize the community’s health needs. On behalf of Logansport Memorial Hospital, PRC will be conducting random phone interviews with Cass County residents in order to capture information about health needs and gaps and where they exist in our community. Residents are encouraged to participate in the 20 minute survey. Results of the survey will be aggregated and used to inform discussions that Logansport Memorial Hospital will have internally and with community organizations to identify good ways to solve the most pressing health issues for our residents. • The LMU Wastewater and Stormwater Departments are planning the advent of several projects directly related to the approved Long Term Control Plan (LTCP), which is part of the U.S. EPA’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program, as regulated in the Clean Water Act (CWA). The plan involves sewer projects within the city of Logansport. • LMU is also working with the City of Logansport on a “rate stabilization initiative.” Several public meetings have already been held; in the coming months, it is expected that the City will continue working on an plan to enter into an agreement with Pyrolyzer LLC, private company that would build a new electric generating plant and turn ownership of the plant over to the city after a 20- or 25-year period.

GOOD NEWS

Ivy Tech Corporat College presented the Partner Award to Federal Mogul on February 12. Picture, left to right: Matt Bell, Jennifer Musall, Kim Berkshire, Brad Angle, Deb Sparks, Terry Foster, Jan Bailey, Steve Daily, Steve Wagner and Craig Currier. Federal Mogul was awarded Ivy Tech Corporate College’s Partner Award at a luncheon on February 12 on Ivy Tech’s Logansport campus. The award is presented to leading Indiana organizations that have clearly demonstrated commitment to increasing their unique competitive position through a focus on the significant development of their workforce to a level of unparalleled excellence. In the nomination, Executive Director for Corporate College, Jan Bailey cited expansion, job creation, community impact, and the collaborative partnership with the college to train new

employees while continuing to support training for incumbent workers. “As we celebrate our 50th anniversary as Ivy Tech this year we know the work that we do with business and industry across the state really harkens to our roots--what is it that we are doing that the Hoosier worker is able to compete in the 21st Century economy. It’s through partnerships like the one we have with you that we can accomplish that work,” said Ivy Tech’s President of Corporate College, Matt Bell, as he addressed representatives from Federal Mogul.

If you’d like to learn more about the proposed new electric generating plant, check out our special section on Cass County Online. The Logansport City Council is set to hold a final vote on moving forward with the project at their March 4 meeting.

City targets more properties for cleanups, possible rehab During the February 6 meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety, building commissioner Bill Drinkwine presented a list of properties that have been abandoned and are now targeted by the city for demolition or rehabilitation. Drinkwine provided descriptions for 13 properties. The board approved publishing notices of intent to demolish nine structures, including the former Maiben’s building at 216 N. Cicott Street. Drinkwine said the owner of that property has given consent for it to be demolished. The city is targeting February 18 as the date to begin that process, and he expects it to take about a week. Drinkwine said a portion of Cicott Street will likely be closed temporarily when the demolition begins. The owners or responsible parties for the other properties will receive a letter and notice will be published in the newspaper that the city intends to demolish the properties if action is not taken. The responsible parties will have one final opportunity to appear before the board for a hearing. Properties targeted for demolition include 216 N. Cicott, 529 Washington, 128 Wheatland Ave, 920 W. Miami, 617 W. Melbourne, 823 Race Street, 214 W. Clinton, 514 Wheatland Ave. and 1224 Spear St. Drinkwine said the city is also talking with owners of properties that could potentially be “reconstructed. They include 1129 Erie Avenue, 709 Race Street and two properties along Bankers Row, 98 and 102 Eel River Avenue. The city is also investigating what to do with a property at 823 Race Street, whose owner has offered to gift the property to the city, according to Drinkwine.

Profile PHOTO BY PHILL DIALS

Logansport is 175 years old. Think about that. Back in the early days of our fair city, you could trap beavers in the Wabash river and trade the pelts for half a year’s supply of salted ham. Perhaps that’s how Logansport’s first mayor, Jordan Vigus fed his family on Christmas. Is that true? I don’t know, but the person that would know is the Executive Director of the Cass County Historical Society, Thelma Conrad. In this month’s No, But Seriously we talk with Thelma about Logansport’s history, and you never know, maybe you’ll learn something... -- Matthew Paul Mix 102 Morning Guy & Mid America Radio Director of Operations

Thelma Conrad EXECUTIVE Director CASS COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY You know, we tried to get Jordan Vigus for this interview, but apparently he’s otherwise indisposed...Thoughts? I was just picturing what he’d look like after all these years buried up there in 9th Street cemetery … I picture One Eyed Willy from the movie Goonies, or the ghost of Mr. Marley from A Christmas Carol…. If we could reincarnate him, what do you think Jordan Vigus would think of our city today? Wish I could do a Yiddish accent here... “The Canal! The Canal! What happened to the canal? What? Packet boats and mules not good enough for you?” (Jordan Vigus turned the first shovel full of soil at the ground breaking ceremony for the section of the Wabash & Erie Canal to be dug to connect Logansport and on.) What are 3 completely random, yet fascinating facts about Logansport? ONE –An Opera House stood on the corner of 3rd & E. Broadway. New York shows and plays were held there featuring top actors and actresses. TWO - 300 men were deputized to ward off looting in Logansport after the 1913 flood. AND

6 | Cass County INfo: | February 2013

they were told to “shoot to kill”! Guardsmen were brought in, too. But the average deputized citizen given the order shoot to kill would worry me. THREE - There was a swimming area and bathhouse at about where Front Street’s park is now - around the 1920s. Popular place. If you could live in Logansport during any era, what would it be and why? I can tell you when I would NOT have wanted to live in Logansport. The 1840s and 50s. Wearing long skirts and lifting them up to walk down muddy streets, cooking and cleaning using primitive methods and tools and no indoor plumbing. And don’t even get me started on women not having the vote! Back in the day, we had real-live canals running through the city. What if we brought those back? We could offer gondola and water taxi rides complete with dudes singing to you while you sail down what was once Broadway! Plus city hall would be water front property! Are you with me? No. Bad idea. a. Traffic will be held up as bridges over the canal are raised or swung out of the way.

b. There’d be so many regulations that any chance of fun would be taken away Thanks for doing this! I think we all learned something today...So, where will Logansport be 175 years from now? Logansport should be an area of great activity and tourism. Here is the news piece that I foresee: “The Art capital of the USA, Logansport, Indiana has long been recognized for its massive contribution to the arts, entertainment and movie industry, and in professional sports as well. It’s no secret that for centuries Logansport has turned out entire families of people with immeasurable amounts of talent. Today marks a first for that beautiful town between two rivers as Logansport residents proudly stand watching as the newly elected President of The United States, one of their very own, is sworn in.” And I hear some of the comments made by those who knew her back when – but that’s for another time.
