Welcome Welcome, 2012!

MICHELLE LAIRD DIALS EDITOR/PUBLISHER

I looked back to see what I wrote in my first column for 2011 and I’m going to echo the same words I wrote then. I’d just attended a community prayer vigil for a young man who was killed just days into the new year, and the lyrics of a song that was played really resonated

with me:

“Greater things have yet to come, Greater things are still to be done in this city.” I can’t think of a more appropriate thought on which to end this year. Cass County Online now provides us with an easy way to page through the headlines that have told our community’s story over the past year. Looking ahead, December 31, 2011 marks Mayor Mike Fincher’s last day in office; January 1, 2012 marks Mayor Ted Franklin’s first day in office. Mayor Fincher (and his department heads) have been a tremendous help to me as I’ve worked to start a business in Logansport. When Mayor Fincher took office, I was a 23-year-old who didn’t speak Spanish trying to get the community to buy into the idea of a Spanish newspaper. Eight years later, I’m in awe of what that business has become. I am, essentially, a nosy reporter, who wants to know what’s going on in our town, and Mike Fincher always took the time to tell me. So, to him, and to his administration, I would like to

offer my most sincere gratitude. Throughout the years, as the city’s arson investigator, Ted Franklin has also been there to answer questions when I have them — though I must admit that I really don’t chase as many fires as perhaps I should. Back to my original point though —

“Greater things have yet to come, Greater things are still to be done in this city.” No matter who sitting behind the mayor’s desk, our city is only as great as its residents let it become. We have an obligation to get involved and work to make this community a place we’re proud to call home. Sharing community information every day is my job, and sometimes, it takes a while for me to realize the impact that what we do as Cass County Communication Network does has on our community. So to the 1,330+ people who receive our CASSINFO text alerts, the 2,500+ people who like us on Facebook, the thousands of people who visit our websites annually, the dedicated readers who pick up this newspaper every month and the dozens of advertisers who make what we do possible every day, I would also like to say thank you. I look forward to being able to look back a year from now and write a column that reflects on the great things we’ve done as a community. As we head into 2012, remember those lyrics:

“Greater things have yet to come, Greater things are still to be done in this city.”

Logansport Memorial Hospital will partner with St.Vincent Health for Hospitalist and Emergency Medicine services effective January 2, 2012. Logansport Memorial Hospital began its Hospitalist program in 2007. Hospitalists are medical doctors who specialize in caring for inpatients from the time of their admission until discharge. The St.Vincent Hospitalist program ensures that physicians and nurse practitioners will be available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. In 2010, Logansport Memorial Hospital had 16,482 emergency room visits with an average wait time of 13 minutes from door to doctor and two hours in the emergency room, ranking above the national average of four-plus hours. “We believe this new relationship with St.Vincent Emergency Physicians will allow us to continue to improve this valued community service,” said David Ameen, president and CEO of Logansport Memorial Hospital. “When immediate critical care is needed, it is imperative to have the necessary resources to deliver patient care in order to achieve the best possible outcome,” said David Ameen. “We are looking forward to benefiting from St.Vincent’s years of expertise as an emergency medicine group practicing in eight Indiana communities.”

Merry Christmas from

We've tried to be really good this year so that Santa would keep us posted on his whereabouts. Some of Santa's stops are listed on casscountycalendar.com, but we've also got the scoop on how you can chat with him. Indiana's Best Radio will host Santa's Hotline to the North Pole starting December 12. Call (574) 739-1023 or (574) 739-1230 between 6 and 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, through Dec. 23 and they'll connect you with Santa. You can listen on Mix 102, WSAL or Hoosier Country 103.7 or online at indianasbestradio.com. One of our own holiday traditions is tracking Santa on Christmas Eve. We love following along with NORAD, who's been tracking Santa's flights since 1958. We'll keep you updated on their news of Santa's whereabouts throughout the day on Christmas Eve via the Cass County Calendar Facebook page, but in the meantime, check out noradsanta.org! We know Santa will be making stops at the Logansport Mall and Walton Christian Church this month, but if you know of other places he'll be, help him out and submit the details at www.casscountycalendar.com so we can help spread the word! Merry Christmas!
