DEL MAR OPPORTUNITIES FOR CAL-BREDS AGAIN AT RECORD LEVELS

As highlighted on page 22 of this edition of California Toroughbred, the upcoming Del Mar summer race meet will once again offer the highest purses ever in California racing. With more than $800,000 distributed in purses per day, the opportunities for California-breds are extremely lucrative.

For example, Cal-bred restricted maiden special weight races will have a purse of $82,000, while the Cal-bred first condition allowance race will have a purse of $83,000. And the Cal-bred maiden $50,000 claiming races have purses of $42,000, the same as last year.

In addition to the increased purses, Del Mar for the second consecutive year has also included a maiden dirt bonus of an additional 25% to Calbred maiden special weight races for all ages. Terefore, all dirt maiden special weight races for Cal-breds will offer a new total purse of $102,500. Te one stipulation for the dirt bonus is that the trainer must have fewer than 60 horses on the Southern California circuit to qualify.

We are also pleased to announce that

not only will all historic Golden State Series races be carded as in the past, but the four juvenile stakes offered during the meet will once again have a purse of $125,000 each. As stated many times, it is the goal of the CTBA to continue to preserve and add as many black-type opportunities as possible for owners and breeders

Once again, we would like to thank and acknowledge Del Mar Torough-

bred Club and the Toroughbred Owners of California for their continued support of California-bred races. As Cal-breds make up roughly half of the field sizes in the state, the emphasis on providing these restricted opportunities further encourages those investing in racing and breeding in California. Please see below a list of the Golden State Series stakes, dates, and conditions offered at Del Mar.

Cal-breds Strong at Santa Anita

As Santa Anita wound down its Hollywood meeting, which closed June 18, California-bred Grand Slam Smile won the $100,000 Fasig-Tipton Debutante for 2-year-old fllies June 17. Earlier in the meeting, Cal-bred One in Vermillion captured the $100,000 Lazaro Barrera Stakes May 6.

ALBANY STAKES IS CAL-BRED BONANZA

When California-bred Evenerevenworse scored in the $65,550 Albany Stakes at Golden Gate Fields June 10, it was the sixth consecutive time a Cal-bred had won the stakes. Evenerevenworse followed Give Me the Lute in 2021-22, Mike’s Tiznow in 2019-20, and My Friend Emma in 2018.

Leading every step of the fve furlongs on turf under jockey Evin Roman, Evenerevenworse held of closing Top Harbor by a neck in :56.23. It was another 11 4 lengths back to Psycho Dar, making it a Calbred Trifecta as well.

Bill McLean trains Evenerevenworse, who was supplemented on the day of the race. TKO Stables, Frank Ables, and Fred Desimone own the 5-year-old gelding, and Pat Maciariello bred the son of Decarchy—Rahbadabadou, by Rahy.

Larry and Marianne Williams bred and own Grand Slam Smile, a daughter of Smiling Tiger—Royal Grand Slam, by Grand Slam. Trainer Steve Specht unveiled the flly at Golden Gate Fields May 14, and she captured a 41 2-furlong maiden race by four lengths on Tapeta under jockey Frank Alvarado.

Alvarado returned aboard her in the fve-furlong Debutante. Grand Slam Smile prompted the early pace of Becky’s Dream, raced wide around the turn, and scored by a halflength in :58.41. Te odds-on favorite, Cal-bred Crazy Hot, fnished third.

“She handled the dirt just fne—you never really know until you put them on it,” said Specht, who indicated that Grand Slam Smile may next tackle Cal-bred stakes at Del Mar.

One in Vermillion got his start at Turf Paradise, where he won the 2022 Turf Paradise Open Spring Futurity and Lost in the Fog Juvenile Stakes. He began 2023 with a win at Sunland Park in the Riley Allison Derby.

After two ffths in graded company, including in the Santa Anita Derby, One in Vermillion entered the seven-furlong Barrera. Te longest shot in the four-horse feld at 5-1, One in Vermillion, ridden by Hector Berrios, led throughout and won by 51⁄4 lengths in 1:22.77.

Eric Kruljac trained One in Vermillion for owner Jonathan Kalman in the colt’s two Santa Anita starts, while Esteban Martinez trains him elsewhere.

“Te man who trained him and broke

him has worked with me,” said Kruljac. “I’ve sent my horses to him for over 35 years.”

Following the Barrera, One in Vermillion won an allowance race at Canterbury Park June 3. He has earned $259,240.

Richard Barton Enterprises bred One in Vermillion, a 3-year-old son of Army Mule—Given Star, by Any Given Saturday. Few Acre Farm consigned One in Vermillion to the 2021 Arizona Toroughbred Breeders’ Association sale, where Kalman purchased him for $26,000.

PEGRAM RECEIVES TOC CHAIRMAN’S AWARD

The Thoroughbred Owners of California has selected California owner and breeder Mike Pegram to receive the 2022 Ed Friendly Industry Service Award, also known as the Chairman’s Award. Presented annually to recognize outstanding contributions and service in the Thoroughbred racing industry, the award in the past has honored such noteworthy people as John Harris, Mace Siegel, Bob and Beverly Lewis, Jerry and Ann Moss, and Clement Hirsch.

Instrumental in standing such stallions in California as In Excess and Coil, Pegram served on the TOC board from 2010-19 and as chairman of the board from 2012-16. In 2010, TOC successfully supported passage of SB 1072, which provided for a takeout increase with all the additional revenue going to purses. Over the next several years, Pegram led

ON THE ROAD WITH CAL-BREDS

Emerald Downs in Washington state and Parx Racing in Pennsylvania were the sites of impressive victories by California-breds. Clovisconnection powered home to break the stakes record in the $50,000 Auburn Stakes at Emerald June 18. Yo Yo Candy, a graduate of the Northern California yearling sale, successfully debuted at Parx and went on to become stakes-placed in New York.

With Kevin Radke aboard, Clovisconnection covered six furlongs in 1:07.59 in the Auburn. Blaine Wright, who was saddling his fourth consecutive Auburn winner, trains Clovisconnection for owner William Hedrick. It was the fastest six furlongs of the meeting and eclipsed the stakes record of 1:07.98 set by Baja Sur in 2019.

William and Judy Hedrick bred Clovisconnection, a 3-year-old son Vronsky—La Darling, by Perfect Mandate. The gelding boosted his total earnings to $133,880.

Checkmate Thoroughbreds bred Yo Yo Candy, a 2-year-old son of Danzing Candy—Yolanda B. Too, by Two Punch, and sold him for $6,000 to Juan Zamora at the 2022 Northern California sale. Trained by Daniel Velazquez for Happy Tenth Stable, Yo Yo Candy won a 41⁄4-furlong maiden race at Parx May 23 by three lengths in :53.64. He came back June 11 to fnish third in the $150,000 Tremont Stakes at Belmont Park.

CAL-BRED MAIDEN BONUS PROGRAM UPDATE

A $17,500 bonus will be made available for owners of registered California-bred or California-sired maidens in maiden special weight races at Santa Anita and Del Mar. A $10,000 bonus will be made available for owners of registered California-bred or California-sired maidens in maiden special weight races in Northern California, Los Alamitos, and all fair meetings throughout the state.

Only races at 41⁄2 furlongs or longer will qualify. The bonus will be paid in approximately 45 racing days. In the event of a dead heat, the bonus will be split among the winners.

the board in fending off attacks from within the industry to repeal or modify the legislation.

Pegram credits much of his success in racing to having put his trust in long-time trainer Bob Baffert. For Pegram, Baffert trained champions Real Quiet and Silverbulletday, as well as Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Captain Steve. Pegram’s California-breds have included Icecoldbeeratreds, trained by Baffert to the 2002 Cal-bred 2-year-old male championship. In partnership with Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, Pegram has campaigned such runners as champions Midnight Lute and Lookin At Lucky, also trained by Baffert.

Pegram will be recognized at TOC’s Southern California annual meeting at Del Mar Aug. 12.

California-bred DOINGHARDTIMEAGAIN led off a unique double for Tom and Debi Stull’s Tommy Town Thoroughbreds June 22, 2013. The homebred 3-year-old flly captured the $150,000 Hollywood Oaks (G2) at Hollywood Park, followed by another Tommy Town homebred, Let Faith Arise, taking the $58,050 California Wine Stakes the same day at Pleasanton. Both were by Tommy Town stallions: Doinghardtimeagain is a daughter of Ministers Wild Cat, and Let Faith Arise, though a Kentucky-bred, is by California sire Kafwain. Jerry Hollendorfer trained both fllies, with Russell Baze piloting Let Faith Arise and Rafael Bejarano bringing Doinghardtimeagain home by 21⁄2 lengths after leading for the entire 11⁄16 miles. Doinghardtimeagain, the 4-5 favorite, clocked the distance in 1:43.27 while defeating Iotapa. Ultimately an earner of $734,304, Doinghardtimeagain, that year’s champion Cal-bred 3-year-old female, is out of the Conquistador Cielo mare Silver Hawk Lady.

BUDROYALE, a California-bred full brother to Cal-bred superstar Tiznow, was also an excellent racehorse and the champion Cal-bred older male of 1999. Four years older than

Tiznow, Budroyale started 52 times, winning 17 races, including seven stakes, and the gelding earned $2,840,810 while competing through his 8-year-old season. One of those stakes, the $125,000 Super Diamond Handicap, occurred June 13, 1998, at Hollywood Park. With Garrett Gomez aboard, Budroyale, the 3-5 favorite, sat in third early in the 11⁄16-mile event, launched his bid three deep into the second turn, and defeated Del Mar Gray by 21⁄2 lengths in 1:41.29. Cecelia Straub-Rubens bred Budroyale and Tiznow, both sons of Cee’s Tizzy—Cee’s Song, by Seattle Song. Ted West trained Budroyale for owner Jeffrey Sengara through most of the gelding’s successes, having claimed him for $50,000 earlier that year.

The list of Old English Rancho stakes winners in California is long and includes BALCONY’S BABE, who won the frst division of the Wilshire Handicap June 17, 1973, at Hollywood Park. Then 5, Balcony’s Babe beat Cal-bred Ground Song by three-quarters of a length, completing the 11⁄8 miles on turf in 1:484⁄5. That time broke the previous stakes record of 1:483⁄5 and was a ffth faster than Convenience’s time in the second division. Jerry Lambert rode Balcony’s Babe for trainer Ken Bowyer. Ellwood B. and Betty Johnston raced Balcony’s Babe and bred her in the name of Old English Rancho. The daughter of First Balcony—Romp Away, by Bull Lea, was foaled on the Ontario, Calif., farm. She would make three more starts before retiring with a record of 15 wins in 60 starts for earnings of $225,108.

California-breds SISTER KATE and MARKS MINE gave California sire Benchmark two stakes wins within a week at Sacramento in 2013. Sister Kate struck frst, leading throughout the $75,250 California Governor’s Cup Handicap July 13 at 11⁄16 miles to score by 33⁄4 lengths in 1:42.53. William Antongeorgi III rode the 5-year-old mare for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and owner/breeder Mary Caldwell. Sister Kate, a full sister to multiple grade 1 winner Brother Derek and stakes winner Don’tsellmeshort, is out of the Siyah Kalem mare Miss Soft Sell. Six days later, Marks Mine, under jockey Frank Alvarado, stalked the pace in the $75,700 California State Fair Sprint Handicap and won by four lengths, getting the six furlongs in 1:08.93. Steve Specht trained the 3-year-old flly for owner/breeders Larry and Marianne Williams. Marks Mine is out of the Capote mare Ermine Fever.

Chris McCarron was able to get Uncaged Fury to the front quickly in the 61⁄2-furlong race. They led throughout to win by two lengths over Strategist in 1:14.92. Lewis Cenicola, known as the regular exercise rider of the great John Henry, had since become a trainer and trained Uncaged Fury for owner/breeder Pete Fer. Uncaged Fury raced through 2000, starting 34 times, with eight wins, for total earnings of $554,365. His frst stakes victory came in the 1994 Inverness Drive Stakes, and he also won that year’s California Cup Sprint Handicap and the 1998 Cardmania Handicap.

Nick Cafarchia, who bred and raced such California-breds as graded winners Road to Slew and Rare Charmer, died June 5. He was 84.

Outside of racing, Cafarchia was probably best known as the longtime owner of Eagle Rock Italian Bakery and Deli in

the Los Angeles area. The Eagle Rock location, founded in 1949, has long been famous for its cannolis, and Cafarchia bought the business in 1961. Cafarchia’s son Anthony said that Nick learned to bake in his native Italy and that his father became a bread baker after coming to the U.S. in 1959.

Nick Cafarchia won more than 100 races, primarily with homebreds. His two best runners were foaled in 1995, both by Slewpy. Road to Slew was a Cal-bred gelding out of the Bold Tropic mare Plumeria Lei, while Rare Charmer was a flly out of the Kennedy Road mare Dancing Road. Craig Dollase trained them both, and in 2001 Rare Charmer captured the Feb. 19 Buena Vista Handicap (G2T) followed by Road to Slew’s victory in the March 3 Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1T). Road to Slew earned a total of $875,360, and Rare Charmer earned a total of $540,216.

Anziyan Royalty arrived in 2000, Cafarchia breeding him by crossing the Tank’s Prospect mare Shy Solana with Anziyan. Also trained by Dollase, Anziyan Royalty won the 2004 On Trust Handicap and placed in four other stakes, including a second in the 2005 Californian Stakes (G2). My Summer Slew, a Cal-bred son of Siberian Summer—My Bouquet, by Slewpy, won the 2010 Robert K. Kerlan Memorial Handicap for Cafarchia.

More recently, Cafarchia bred and raced My Italian Babbo, trained by Richard Baltas to capture the 2017 California Dreamin’ Stakes. My Italian Babbo, a son of Papa Clem—My Charming Tiger, by Hold That Tiger, received his name because “babbo means papa in Italian,” Cafarchia said after the stakes victory.

John Bell

John Bell, who was the business manager for his family’s Bell Bloodstock Company and thus involved with such good California-breds as Barberstown, died April 30 at age 84. Bell’s family has been prominent in California racing for decades. John was the son of the late Thomas R. Bell Jr., brother of the late trainer Thomas R. Bell II, and uncle to current trainer Thomas R. Bell II.

Bell Bloodstock campaigned Barberstown in partnership with McDermott Ranch. Joe McDermott bred the 1980 son of Gummo—Available Miss, by Bolinas Boy. Barberstown won the 1983 Will Rogers Handicap (G3) and fnished third in that year’s Belmont Stakes (G1).

John Brocklebank (801) 885-9969 Randi Sackett at (916) 496-6559 Email: redcliffsracing@gmail.com

As a child, John accompanied his parents to visit many major Californians of the era, including movie mogul and California owner/breeder Louis B. Mayer. John grew up to be a successful real estate developer throughout California and the U.S. He founded Western Security Bank, which was ultimately sold to Citizens Business Bank in 2002. John was also an avid golfer and a 50-year member and former president of Lakeside Golf Club.

SKY’S THE LIMIT

NUMEROUS NORCAL SALE GRADUATES PERFORM WELL IN SALES RINGS AND AT RACETRACK

Every time Ceiling Crusher destroys her competition, remember one thing: She could have been yours for only $22,000.

Tat’s the amount of money Ceiling Crusher brought at the 2021 California Toroughbred Breeders Association

Northern California sale. Since that sale, she has epitomized the bargains available at that sale, both as a pinhook and in the winner’s circle.

John Harris’ Harris Farms bred Ceiling Crusher, a 2020 daughter of Mr. Big—Palisadesprincess, by Indian Charlie. Harris Farms consigned her to the sale, where Tari Brocklebank purchased her for $22,000.

Ceiling Crusher broke her maiden by 43⁄4 lengths in her frst start, June 3, 2022. Tat began the skyrocketing of her value, as less than four months later she was a $115,000 buy-back at the Fasig-Tipton California sale of yearlings and horses of all ages. She was then sold privately to a partnership and switched to the barn of trainer Doug O’Neill.

Her value has soared with each subsequent victory. Trough her frst four starts, Ceiling Crusher has gone undefeated, including a 151⁄2-length triumph in the Evening Jewel Stakes and a 17-length annihilation in the Melair Stakes. She has earned $263,400, more than 10 times her cost at the Northern sale.

Te 2023 edition of the Northern California sale will be held Aug. 15 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton beginning at noon. It will be the next opportunity for people to take advantage of bargains such as Ceiling Crusher.

Horses will be stabled in the permanent barns near the Amador Pavilion. In addition, a $500 travel allowance with

a minimum purchase of $5,000 is being ofered to out-of-state trainers and trainers from Southern California who attend the sale, with proof of travel.

Ceiling Crusher is far from the only successful graduate of the Northern California sale, both in the sales ring and on the racetrack.

Last year, a yearling colt by Cat Burglar—Janice Sue, by Harlan’s Holiday, sold for just $4,500. Juan Zamora bought him from the Barton Toroughbreds consignment. Six months later, that colt brought $100,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company March 2-year-old sale.

Fly a Fantasy, a daughter of Smiling Tiger and a $29,000 graduate, was one of the frst from last year’s sale to reach the racetrack, and she debuted with a 33⁄4-length victory April 29 at Santa Anita. A day later at Santa Anita, Going Mobile, a son of Stay Tirsty and a $20,000 sale grad, aired in his debut by 41⁄2 lengths. Yo Yo Candy, a son of Danzing Candy and a $6,000 sale grad, debuted at Parx Racing May 23 with a victory and fnished third in the Tremont Stakes at Belmont Park in his second start.

Te graduates of the 2022 sale are, of course, just starting their racing careers. Horses from earlier sales have more of a track record.

Opening Buzz leads the class of 2020. Tom and Debi Stull’s Tommy Town Toroughbreds bred the 4-yearold daughter of Stanford—Open Mic, by Unbridled’s Song, and Tommy Town continues to race her after she was a $34,000 buyback through the Easterbrook Livestock Management consignment. Buyers missed an outstanding opportunity because Opening Buzz has now earned $204,493 and has won two stakes at Turfway Park, the Wishing Well Stakes and the WEBN Frog Stakes.

Trainer Quinn Howey made a very astute purchase when bidding $7,500 at the 2020 sale for Cowboy Charlie.

Terry Lovingier bred the son of Stay Tirsty—Foxy Indian, by Indian Charlie, and consigned him to the Northern California sale in the name of his Lovacres Ranch.

Under Howey’s tutelage and racing for Howey and Steve Swanson, Cowboy Charlie has won four races—two at Golden Gate Fields and two at Del Mar. He also fnished third in the 2022 Silky Sullivan Stakes, and his earnings stand at $159,060.

Two others sold at the 2020 sale for even less and are now six-fgure earners.

Ray Tomas bought a daughter of Mr. Big—Tis Means War, by War Chant, for $6,500. Jamey Tomas trains the flly, bred by Harris Farms and John Nicoletti and now named Chancery Way, for the father-and-son team of Andy and Rob Smolich. She has won four races, including the 2022 Bear Fan Stakes, placed in three other stakes, and earned $150,770.

Dulce Emma cost even less— $1,500—at the same sale. Easterbrook Livestock Management sold the flly to Chello Serrano. Richard Barton Enterprises and Lo Hi Stable bred the daughter of Dads Caps—Ma Ka Bet, by Artax. Dulce Emma, trained by Jesus Ramos, has won four races and earned $139,384.

Derrick Hesselein only had to bid $1,200 at the 2019 sale to get Big Duke. Richard Barton Enterprises bred the son of Phantom Wildcat—Time On My Hands, by Orientate. Hesselein owns Big Duke with three others, and

the 5-year-old gelding has won fve races, fnished second in the 2021 Auburn Stakes, and earned $155,060.

Big Fish and All Dialed In cost considerably more at the 2019 sale, but they both proved well worth their purchase prices.

Bred by George Krikorian, Big Fish topped the sale that year at $45,000. Legacy Ranch bought him from Harris Farms, and Big Fish went on to be voted the co-champion California-bred 2-year-old male of 2020. He won that year’s Del Mar Juvenile Turf Stakes and the 2021 California Cup Derby, earning a total of $259,018.

Harris Farms bought All Dialed In from Woodbridge Farm for $30,000 at the 2019 sale. Premier Toroughbreds bred the daughter of Dialed In—Nufsaid Nufsaid, by Mutakddim. For Harris, All Dialed In has won three races, placed in the 2022 Betty Grable Stakes, and earned $183,200.

Tis year’s catalog will ofer similar potential bargains. In addition to regular in-person bidding, online bidding is also available.

Welcome, Cal-breds

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND FOR STATE-BREDS AT DEL MAR

As Del Mar gets set for the 33rd edition of its premier event, the $1 million FanDuel Racing Pacifc Classic (G1), let everyone remember: It started with a Calbred. California-bred Best Pal won the inaugural running in 1991, followed by Bertrando in 1993, Free House in 1998, General Challenge in 1999, Lava Man in 2006, Acclamation in 2011, and California Chrome in 2016.

Del Mar will present a record-tying stakes schedule worth $8,275,000 for its 84th season, which is set to open July 21 and run through Sept. 10, with the Pacifc Classic slated for Sept. 2. Cal-breds will be set to compete not only in open stakes, but also in the many lucrative opportunities in the Golden State Series.

Overnight purses are among the highest ever. Last year, Del Mar’s purse payout topped $25 million for the season, more than $800,000 per day. Tat was the highest in California racing history, and Del Mar is aiming for similar numbers in 2023.

“We were absolutely thrilled by the huge response last year from our horsemen and horsewomen and our fans,” said Tom Robbins, Del Mar’s executive vice president and director of racing. “Te racing throughout the summer was extremely safe and frst-rate. Obviously, 2022 set a very high bar on all levels; we’re excited for the challenge of continuing these very strong trends.”

Te track’s popular and lucrative Ship & Win incentive program will be in its

13th year and again provides owners and trainers of qualifed runners with $5,000 starter bonuses and 50% purse supplements for dirt runners, as well as $4,000 bonuses and 40% supplements to grass starters.

Del Mar’s maiden dirt bonus plan, which expanded in 2022 to include allaged maidens at the higher end of the scale, will lure runners to take part in the track’s best non-winners races with sizable purses of up to $102,500 per event for eligible participants. Additionally, Del Mar will be ofering record levels for maiden special weight races at the track this year of $82,000 each, the highest maiden special weight purses in California history.

Cal-breds, as always, will have a deep program of Cal-bred/California-sired overnight races and stakes. Te Golden State Series ofers eight stakes during the Del Mar summer meeting worth

a total of $1,150,000, beginning with the $175,000 Fleet Treat Stakes July 27 through the $125,000 I’m Smokin Stakes Sept. 8. Four of the stakes are for 2-yearolds, two are for 3-year-olds, and two are for 3-year-olds and up, giving all ages good opportunities.

Te graded stakes program includes six grade 1 events. Six of Del Mar’s summer stakes are Breeders’ Cup “Win & You’re In” tests, which each guarantee a spot in the starting gate for their major counterparts during the two-day, $28 million Breeders’ Cup, to be held this year at Santa Anita.

“We’ve got a stakes schedule that mirrors our record program of last year,” said David Jerkens, Del Mar vice president and racing secretary. “We made a couple of very minor tweaks, but otherwise it’s the same oferings at the same value that our horsemen and women found especially pleasing last year.”

IDEAL DISTANCE

OLD PAL RELISHES NINE FURLONGS IN HIS STAKES DEBUT

Old Pal may only be a 3-year-old, but he has already lived up to his name.

“He is really laid back and goes about his business—he is not a nervous horse,” said trainer Mark Glatt.

Tat coupled with what may be his perfect distance, 11 8 miles on turf, resulted in victory for Old Pal in the $151,000 Snow Chief Stakes Presented by City National Bank May 28 at Santa Anita. Glatt trains the colt for a large partnership headed by Blinkers On Racing Stable.

Old Pal didn’t run as a 2-year-old, making his racing debut Feb. 18 at Santa Anita, when he fnished second at 61 2 furlongs on the turf.

“He was just growing into that pretty

frame of his, and Mark was patient and did the right thing,” said Scott Sherwood, founder of Blinkers On. “We just took our time with him. We knew he wasn’t going to be a fve-furlong sprinter anyway.”

Old Pal appreciated the added distance of his second start, a mile on turf, coming from behind to break his maiden by 31⁄2 lengths March 25. In his fnal start before

the Snow Chief April 21, also at a mile on turf, Old Pal fnished third after bobbling at the start.

“Tat last race was at a mile, the pace was very slow, and his foot was bugging him a little bit,” Sherwood said.

A minor foot bruise no longer posed any issue by the Snow Chief. Old Pal was stepping up to stakes competition and faced six others that included Silky Sullivan Stakes winner Hacking It Up and stakes-placed Clouseau.

Clouseau set the early pace, while Old Pal, breaking from the rail under jockey Juan Hernandez, was in no hurry. Around the frst turn, Old Pal sat in ffth.

“Today he ran the style he likes to run—break well, relax, and give me a big run at the end,” said Hernandez.

Clouseau completed the frst quarter-mile in :24.68 and the half-mile in :49.57, but the slow pace didn’t worry Hernandez.

“We stayed on the rail,” the jockey said. “Te hole opened up and when it was time to run, he took of.”

When horses in front of Old Pal swung wide out of the second turn, he hugged the rail to pass Tom and Jazzy and challenge Clouseau. Old Pal defeated Clouseau by three-quarters of a length in 1:50.14, with Boss Sully a half-length back in third.

“It proved what we’ve kind of always thought—that he’s really a mile and an eighth horse or maybe even farther,” said Sherwood. “He’s just shown that from day one. It was a great ride by Juan. Old Pal was a courageous horse, just ran right up the rail.”

Ken Miles and Sheridan Jones bred Old Pal, a son of Grazen—Athina Lee, by English Channel. Greg Gilchrist bought the colt for Blinkers On from consignor Critter Creek Farm for $160,000 at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton California yearling sale.

Golden State Series—Melair Stakes

frst win for owner Dan Northrup and trainer Luis Mendez.

Only three faced Ceiling Crusher for the 11⁄16-mile Melair, and her 1-5 odds told the story. Juan Hernandez, who has ridden her in all of her races, broke Ceiling Crusher on top, and she proceeded to dominate the race.

After a quarter-mile in :23.46, Ceiling Crusher had a length on second-place Chismosa. After a half-mile in :47.15, Chismosa had tightened that margin to a half-length. However, Ceiling Crusher was simply biding her time.

“I had company for a little while,” said Hernandez. “But at the three-eighths I said, ‘I don’t want company anymore.’ So I asked her and she opened up from the three-eighths to the wire.”

WHAT CEILING?

CEILING CRUSHER REMAINS UNDEFEATED WITH 17-LENGTH SCORE

In winning the $147,000 Melair Stakes for 3-year-old fllies at Santa Anita, Ceiling Crusher took one more step toward emulating the career of the brilliant flly for whom theraceisnamed.Melairwentundefeated in fve starts in 1986, breaking Hollywood Park’s track record for six furlongs in only her second start and defeating the mighty Snow Chief in her last.

Melair, a three-time graded winner and 1986 champion California-bred 3-year-old female and sprinter, won each of her races by daylight, including her nine-length triumph when breaking that track record. Ceil-

ing Crusher likewise annihilates her competition, and while she isn’t beating graded company—yet—her margins are astounding.

Trainer Doug O’Neill and owners Wonderland Racing Stables, Todd Cady, Tim Kasparof, and Ty Leatherman have kept Ceiling Crusher with Cal-bred company. Tat has resulted, after two conditioned races, in back-to-back stakes victories: the April 8 Evening Jewel Stakes by 151 2 lengths and the Melair by 17 lengths. Te current ownership partnership acquired Ceiling Crusher privately after her

“Opened up” is an understatement. Ceiling Crusher put on such a display that Hernandez geared her down to a canter under the wire, resulting in a time of 1:44.25 in the flly’s frst attempt beyond sprint distances. Tom’s Regret outfnished Chismosa by a neck for second.

“You never know until they try two turns,” said Leatherman. “But Doug worked her six furlongs on May 21, and he said that she’s bred for it and after that work she looked like she could do it. She’s showing that she might be a special one.”

O’Neill noted that he might take Ceiling Crusher to the East or Midwest—“one of those races that have Oaks at the end,” the trainer said with a grin.

John Harris’ Harris Farms bred Ceiling Crusher, a daughter of Mr. Big—Palisadesprincess,byIndianCharlie, andconsigned her to the 2021 California Toroughbred Breeders Association Northern California yearling sale. Ceiling Crusher, who cost Tari Brocklebank just $22,000, is quickly becoming one of the most famous of that sale’s graduates.

Tough a Kentucky-bred mare, Palisadesprincess is by Cal-bred Indian Charlie. Mr. Big stands at Pete and Evelyn Parrella’s Legacy Ranch in Clements. Given that Ceiling Crusher comes from one of California’s longtime and most successful breeding programs, her California roots go deep. As Melair did 37 years ago, Ceiling Crusher represents her home state well.

NOT DONE YET

Just about the time Square Eddie has started coming into his own as a broodmare sire, Eddie’s New Dream reminded us that his sire record is not yet complete. Tough owners Paul and Zillah Reddam pensioned Square Eddie three years ago, Eddie’s New Dream represented her sire well by winning the $100,500 Fran’s Valentine Stakes May 28 at Santa Anita.

Square Eddie has long been a leading California sire, and as a broodmare sire he is already crossing well with Nyquist and California sire Pavel, both raced by the Reddams.

“It’s just really unfortunate that he became infertile, but he’s just been a jewel to have,” said Paul Reddam. “He’s a tremendous broodmare sire.”

In the Fran’s Valentine at a mile on the turf, Eddie’s New Dream met several other distafers by top California sires. Big Switch is by Mr. Big; Rose Maddox and Shocking Grey are by Grazen; Warrens Candy Girl is by Clubhouse Ride; and Taming the Tigress is by Smiling Tiger. Bettors sent Big Switch of as the 8-5 favorite, with Eddie’s New Dream the 2-1 second choice.

Eddie’s New Dream, trained by Ben Cecil and ridden by Mario Gutierrez, hadn’t competed since fnishing third to Alice Marble and Taming the Tigress in the Feb. 19 Spring Fever Stakes at six furlongs on the dirt. Tough she runs well on both surfaces, Eddie’s New Dream excels on turf. Last year she won the California Dreamin’ Stakes and Irish O’Brien Stakes down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course, and she is graded stakes-placed on grass.

When the gate opened, Eddie’s New Dream, who drew the rail position, took the lead immediately.

EDDIE’S NEW DREAM KEEPS SIRE SQUARE EDDIE IN THE LIMELIGHT

“I was looking for an easy lead and they weren’t pressing me,” Gutierrez said.

Eddie’s New Dream sailed along on the front end with easy fractions of :23.06 for the frst quarter-mile and :47.55 for a half-mile. Big Switch tracked her in second and pressured the front-runner at the three-eighths pole. But Eddie’s New Dream had plenty of energy to rebuf the favorite. When Rose Maddox made her move in the stretch to draw even with Eddie’s New Dream, the Square Eddie mare held her of also, winning by a half-length in 1:35.05.

Rose Maddox fnished

lengths

in front of Shocking Grey, with Big Switch fourth.

“I just thought that she’d be fresh and having the rail she should protect that position,” Paul Reddam said of the tactics. “Ben was a little worried she might get a little lazy on the front, but I said, ‘You know, of that layof, she’ll go.’ ”

Cecil admitted that he was concerned about Eddie’s New Dream getting lazy, but she came through for her connections.

“She is just a nice flly to have and so easy to train,” Cecil said. “She is a pleasure.”

Second in the 2022 Wilshire Stakes (G3), Eddie’s New Dream has been unplaced in several other graded races.

“She’s been a little bit unlucky,” Reddam said. “Whenever we’ve tried graded stakes she hasn’t gotten a very good trip, and with grass racing it’s all about the trip.”

Five-year-old Eddie’s New Dream is out of the Tapit mare Walkingonadream, so she has a good pedigree both top and bottom. Reddam said that they could try graded company with her again.

Golden State Series—Tor’s Echo Stakes

VRON VS. RIDE

IN THEIR FIRST MEETING, THE CHOSEN VRON DEFEATS BRICKYARD RIDE

Two of the best California-bred sprinters in recent times, Te Chosen Vron and Brickyard Ride, met for the frst time in the $98,000 Tor’s Echo Stakes May 28 at Santa Anita. If Hollywood wrote the script, the two would have looked each other in the eye the second the gate opened. But because of different running styles, that scenario was unlikely.

Instead, Brickyard Ride slugged it out with Sunrise Journey, with Te Chosen Vron lying in wait from third. Tat enabled Te Chosen Vron to pounce and draw of for an impressive 51⁄2-length victory in the six-furlong event.

Te drama occurred at the entry box and during scratch time. Brickyard Ride was nominated for the Tor’s Echo as well as the May 27 Triple Bend Stakes (G2) at seven furlongs and the May 28 CrystalWater Stakes for Cal-breds at a mile on turf. Te Chosen Vron was nominated for the Tor’s Echo and Crystal Water. Trainer

Craig Lewis entered Brickyard Ride in the Tor’s Echo, while trainer Eric Kruljac entered Te Chosen Vron in the Tor’s Echo and Crystal Water, ultimately opting for the sprint race against Brickyard Ride.

While Kruljac acknowledged that meeting Brickyard Ride would be “a tall task,” he was also concerned that Te Chosen Vron might not get a good trip in the Crystal Water, having drawn post seven.

“He has a target on his back in these races,” Kruljac said. “At a mile on turf, the frst turn comes up quick. I didn’t want to see him getting parked way outside.”

Te Tor’s Echo ended up with a fourhorse feld after Positivity scratched in favor of the Triple Bend and None Above the Law scratched in favor of the Crystal Water. Bettors sent Te ChosenVron of as the narrow 7-10 favorite over 9-10 Brickyard Ride.

Te Chosen Vron broke well for jockey Hector Berrios but was content to let SunriseJourneyandBrickyardRidedukeitout up front. Tose two raced swiftly down the backside, with Sunrise Journey responsible for the frst quarter-mile fraction of :21.82 and the half-mile in :44.41.

“We had a great break, and the plan was to stay behind the speed,” Berrios said.

Te Chosen Vron closed ground around the turn, “just ambling up to the top pair,” said Santa Anita announcer Frank Mirahmadi. Te gelding took the lead at the top of the stretch and sauntered to victory in 1:09.58 over Tigre Di Slugo, with BrickyardRidethirdandSunriseJourneyfourth. “He couldn’t blow out a match when he came back,” said Kruljac. “Tis was one of his best races. Rarely do you get rewarded as much as we have with this one.” Kruljac, Sondereker Racing, Robert Fetkin, and Richard Tornburgh bred and own Te Chosen Vron, a 5-year-old son of Vronsky—Tiz Molly, by Tiz Wonderful. Te Chosen Vron was winning his seventh consecutive race, all stakes, dating back to September. His total earnings stand at $792,678.

FRIENDLY RIVALS

KINGS RIVER KNIGHT AND COALINGA ROAD

ONE-TWO FOR OLD ENGLISH AND HARRIS

After Kings River Knight and Coalinga Road posted a onetwo fnish in the $100,000 Crystal Water Stakes May 28 at Santa Anita, trainer John Sadler summed it up nicely.

“I get very sentimental when I see Old English Rancho and Harris Farms coming down the stretch,” Sadler said.

True, Sadler trains winner Kings River Knight, but he was speaking as a longtime afcionado of California racing and breeding. Sadler has trained many a successful California-bred, and he appreciates the importance of the two longtime California breeding establishments facing of and hitting the Exacta.

Te Johnston family’s Old English Rancho and John Harris’ Harris Farms not only are friendly rivals, but in recent years they have combined forces, with Jonny Hilvers as farm manager. Old English Rancho bred Kings River Knight, whose sire, Acclamation, frst stood at Old English and now stands at Harris. Both Judy Johnston of Old English and John Harris came to the winner’s circle after the Crystal Water.

Kings River Knight and Coalinga Road went of as the top two choices in the fve-horse feld, Kings River Knight at 4-5 and Coalinga Road at 2-1. When the gate opened, Kings River Knight, ridden by Juan Hernandez, few to the lead as expected, and he led

every step of the mile on the turf. Te gelding was able to control the pace, getting the frst quarter-mile in :23.58 and the halfmile in :47.54.

Meanwhile, None Above the Law and Harris-bred Coalinga Road were running second and third. None Above the Law eventually weakened, while Coalinga Road persevered through the stretch. Kings River Knight defeated Coalinga Road by 214 lengths in 1:34.55, and Coalinga Road had another 21⁄4 lengths on third-place Carmelita’s Man.

Kings River Knight was winning his frst stakes, having just missed by a nose to Te Chosen Vron in the March 19 Sensational Star Stakes. Te Chosen Vron was scratched from the Crystal Water in favor

oftheTor’sEchoStakes, whichhewon,at six furlongs on dirt later on the card.

Te Ellwood Johnston Trust owns Kings River Knight with Integrity Toroughbred Racing and Kenneth Tevelde. Andy Mathis trained the 5-year-old, who is out of the Poteen mare Seasontoperfection, through his early career. In seven starts for Mathis primarily in Northern California, Kings River Knight won three times, with three seconds and a fourth, in the Jan. 7 Unusual Heat Turf Classic Presented by City National Bank behind victorious Coalinga Road.

Sadler said that he took over Kings River Knight’s training the day after the Turf Classic.

“He came to me in good shape,” Sadler said. “Te ownership thought that there might be a few more opportunities for him down here, especially with these Cal-bred races. He ran such a good race the frst time we ran him—he ran Te Chosen Vron to a whisker.”

Old English has had the Kings River Knight’s family for several generations, both top and bottom. Te farm bred unraced Seasontoperfection as well as the second dam, Grilltoperfection. Old English bred and raced Acclamation, the Eclipse Award-winning champion older male of 2011, and several generations of Acclamation’s bottom line.

BERTRANDO STAKES

Kings River Knight and Coalinga Road nearly duplicated their efort four weeks later in the $100,500 Bertrando Stakes at Los Alamitos June 24. Only Lovesick Blues separated the two, as Kings River Knight scored his second consecutive stakes victory.

It is a testament to the versatility of Cal-breds that four of the six horses in the Bertrando, at a mile on the dirt, were coming out of turf stakes. Te Golden State Series ofers opportunities on multiple surfaces, and trainers often

go back and forth with their charges, with excellent results.

Te Bertrando attracted a salty feld. Every runner was coming out of a stakes races, and three had most recently competed in graded competition. Kings River Knight, Coalinga Road, and None Above the Law had faced each other in the Crystal Water, while Lovesick Blues had run third in the Daytona Stakes (G3T) down the Santa Anita hillside turf course. Desmond Doss and Positivity exited the Triple Bend Stakes (G2) at seven furlongs on

the dirt, with Desmond Doss having fnished third behind Spirit of Makena and C Z Rocket.

In addition, Desmond Doss was a two-time defending champion of the Bertrando. He won the race by a halflength in 2021 as a 4-year-old, and at 5 last year he scored by three-quarters of a length. Both times he had gone of as the favorite, but bettors sent him away this time as a 5-1 fourth choice, correctly—as it turned out—making Kings River Knight the 8-5 favorite.

When the gate opened, Kings River Knight broke well from post 3, with Positivity quickly taking the lead. Tat didn’t last long because Kings River Knight grabbed the lead away as he rounded the frst turn and, as he did in the Crystal Water, proceeded to dictate the pace.

Hernandez was able to let Kings River Knight set easy fractions of :23.50 for the frst quarter-mile, :46.67 for a half-mile, and 1:11.01 for six furlongs. Lovesick Blues and Coalinga Road commenced their rallies on the second turn, with Coalinga Road having to swing very wide.

Kings River Knight had plenty in reserve, and he triumphed by two lengths in 1:35.31. Lovesick Blues fnished second, 11⁄4 lengths ahead of Coalinga Road.

“He’s very sharp right now,” Hernandez said. “He always breaks fast, and he was real comfortable on the lead. You don’t want to ask them too soon with the long stretch, so I waited until we straightened and he really gave me a nice kick.”

Judy Johnston again attended the races and was in the winner’s circle. Assistant trainer Juan Leyva deputized for Sadler.

“He’s a real honest horse and he just likes to run,” Leyva said. “He fred every time. A lot of turf horses take to this track, so that’s why we took a chance here.”

Leyva noted that the timing also suited because the upcoming Del Mar meeting has so many turf opportunities. Kings River Knight could next attempt the $150,000 California Dreamin’ Stakes there Aug. 5 on the grass.

Golden State Series—Dream of Summer Stakes

SADIE GETS AWAY

In her 2023 debut on the winter/ spring meet’s closing day, versatile sprinter Sadie Bluegrass captured the inaugural running of the $76,350 Dream of Summer Stakes over Golden Gate Fields’ turf course. Te June 11 victory was the 6-year-old mare’s 14th lifetime win from 24 starts.

Coming of a 101 2-month layof, Sadie Bluegrass rallied under jockey Armando Ayuso to win the fve-furlong Dream of Summer—for Golden State Series-eligible fllies and mares—by a half-length in a time of :56.39. Te victory pushed her career earnings to $346,080.

“She’s the best thing to come out of (the pandemic),” said trainer Jonathan

Wong, who claimed the daughter of Bluegrass Cat for $12,500 March 15, 2020, on behalf of co-owners Madden Racing, Hon Cheung Kum, and Hsiu Mei Tsai.

Her California breeder and former owner, Nick Alexander, will always think of her as one that got away.

Sadie Bluegrass had worked powerfully for her return and broke with the leaders in the Dream of Summer. She soon took back to midpack in the feld of eight as Sassy Nature, breaking from the rail post position, sprinted to an early two-length advantage over the 13-10 favorite Chancery Way. Sassy Nature cut swift fractions (:20.39 for the quarter-mile and :43.79 for the half) while beating back the challenge of Chancery Way on the turn and was still in command by 11⁄2 lengths with a furlong to run.

But Sadie Bluegrass, never more than about fve lengths of the frontrunners, advanced steadily down the lane and took aim at the leaders in deep stretch under steady urging from Ayuso. Te mare edged past Sassy Nature in the fnal strides. As the second choice at odds of 5-2, she paid $7.60 to win. Chancery held for third, 13⁄4 lengths behind the winner.

Te victory was no surprise to Alexander.

“Sure, I’ve followed her,” Alexander said. “Ever since I lost her, I knew I’d made a mistake. I think my trainer, Steve Miyadi, underestimated her. It happens. We run a lot of horses.”

Alexander noted that Sadie Bluegrass was the frst foal from her homebred dam, Sadie Clare, by Grazen. Sadie Clare had just a maiden win from six starts in her single season of racing in 2015, so not much was expected of Sadie Bluegrass.

But Wong saw the chestnut flly as an opportunity. With fear and uncertainty surrounding the fast-spreading Covid-19 virus keeping most everyone away from the track, his was the only claim ticket for her.

“Had it been a normal time, there’d have probably been six or seven claims in on her, and there would have been a shake-of to see who got her,” he said. Sadie Bluegrass won the race, her second victory in four starts, by 31⁄2 lengths as a 2-5 favorite.

And she has kept on winning, whether on Golden Gate’s Tapeta main track, over which she has nine wins from 11 starts, or turf.

Wong gave her a long break after she fnished last of six in the Daisycutter Stakes at Del Mar last July. It was just what she needed. Her victory in the Dream of Summer, her second stakes win following last year’s Camilla Urso, made her four for seven at fve furlongs on the Golden Gate turf.

CAL-BRED FAST BUCK GIVES CESAR DEALBA HIS FIRST THOROUGHBRED STAKES WIN

Cesar DeAlba came full circle at Santa Anita May 27 when he won the $100,000 Daytona Stakes (G3T) with California-bred Fast Buck. A leading Quarter Horse jockey until he retired in late 2018 to become a trainer, DeAlba started with Toroughbreds.

He grew up admiring such jockeys as Bill Shoemaker and Laft Pincay Jr., and he rode his frst race for Toroughbred trainer Bob Hess Jr. DeAlba’s Quarter Horse career included piloting such stars as multiple champion Moonist and winning the Sam Tompson Memorial Jockey Award, modeled after Santa Anita’s George Woolf Award.

Fast Buck didn’t give DeAlba his frst graded victory as a trainer—that came with Quarter

Horse Favorite Colossus in 2021 at Los Alamitos. But the Cal-bred did give the trainer his frst Toroughbred stakes victory, and even better, DeAlba owns the gelding with Zephyr Racing and Peter Cruz.

Daehling Ranch bred Fast Buck, a 5-year-old gelded son of Gallant Son— Zorra Roja, by Falstaf. It was the frst graded stakes winner for Gallant Son, who stands at the ranch. Daehling also bred Zorra Roja and raced her in partnership.

Initially, DeAlba wasn’t considering a graded race for Fast Buck over the Memorial Day weekend.

“We were planning to go in the Crystal Water (for Cal-breds),” he said. “I called the racing ofce and James Kasparof said, ‘What about the Daytona?’ It looked like he would be the lone speed.”

Four of the seven horses in the Daytona were Cal-breds, including multiple stakes winner Indian Peak. Favoritism went to Kentucky-bred Whatmakessammyrun, a graded stakes winner down the Santa Anita hillside turf course, the same distance of about 61 2 furlongs as the Daytona.

Te 2-1 second choice, Fast Buck had only started in one previous stakes, the March 19 Sensational Star Stakes down the hill for Cal-breds and California-sired runners. Kings River Knight beat Fast Buck to the lead that day, with Te Chosen Vron picking up the pieces for the victory as Fast Buck fnished fourth. Fast Buck returned twostartslatertowina61 2-furlongturfrace on the fat against open optional-claiming company by leading throughout.

“He’s a good horse to train—he’s easy,” said DeAlba. “He just needs to be on the lead.”

Fast Buck indeed turned out to be the lone speed in the Daytona. Jockey Hector Berrios sent Fast Buck right to the front, where the Cal-bred quickly put fve lengths between himself and second-place Burnin Turf.

“Te trainer told me to just keep moving him and not let him think,” Berrios said. “Tat’s what I did. I took him to the lead, and I kept him moving until the wire.”

Fast Buck blazed the frst quarter-mile in :21.05 and the half-mile in :42.64. His competition was closing, but Fast Buck gamely held them of to win by a neck over Whatmakessammyrun, with Cal-bred Lovesick Blues another head back in third. Fast Buck completed the distance in 1:11.68.

“He made me nervous—he was going fast,” DeAlba admitted.

But Fast Buck got it done, and a buddy of DeAlba’s made sure the trainer received the obligatory water splashed over his head for his frst Toroughbred stakes victory.

BUILDING TRUST WITH EVERY FOAL HE BREEDS

KEN MILES

Ken Miles, breeder of Old Pal, winner of this year’s Snow Chief Stakes Presented by City National Bank Stakes, says he tries to keep one thing in mind as his young horses are preparing for the eventual sales ring.

“A horse may have many owners during its lifetime; you never know what will happen after leaving you,” he said. “But it will only have one breeder. Your name will always be attached to that horse.”

Getting a young charge to accept the “human touch” is one of the most important qualities he can instill in order to forge a successful transition to racehorse, says the Washington breeder. Beginning as early as possible in a young horse’s life, Miles wants a weanling to become accustomed to being handled.

“Not only do I love it (playing with the foals), but it’s to their beneft—I really believe that,” he said. “Over time, it builds a lot of trust.” Even if the horse only has a short career or never makes it to the track at all, it will have a better life by responding positively to people, Miles emphasizes.

Miles, who lives in Bellevue, across Lake Washington from Seattle, is not a big-time breeder. In the 20 years or so that he’s been involved, he’s had two broodmares: Old Pal’s dam, Athina Lee (by English Channel), and the second dam, Time for Magic (by Pentelicus). He knows the family tree backward and forward, knowledge solidifed through countless hours of pedigree research.

“Horses have been a passion of mine for a long time,” said Miles, who has worked most of his adult life for

candy maker Brown & Haley, creators of Almond Roca.

“When I was a kid, I went to (Longacres) with my sister. I was enamored with watching horses in the paddock, how they reacted to their handlers. It was fascinating, and I told myself one day, if possible, I’m going to do this.”

During his years breeding horses, Miles developed an eye for a potential standout. Watching Old Pal at six months gallop about with other young horses in an open feld at Mary Lou Griffn’s Griffin Place in Buckley, Wash. (where Miles sends all his horses), he knew the bright chestnut with a long white blaze had the makings of a turf star. Miles appreciated the California-bred Grazen colt’s graceful full stride and the way he carried himself.

“He has always been all class,” Miles said of the horse he co-bred with Sheridan Jones.

Old Pal was named in honor of Miles’s late parents.

“It was the pet name they used for one another as they were getting on in years,” he explained.

Old Pal sold for $160,000 to Blinkers on Racing Stable and a multitude of partners at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton California yearling sale, the most Miles has ever received at auction.

Trainer Mark Glatt and Blinkers On founder Scott Sherwood followed Miles’s advice and took their time with Old Pal, opting not to race him at 2.

“None of the horses from this family are what you would call precocious,” Miles said. “I always tell people that

are interested in buying any of them, ‘If you’re in a hurry and can’t wait to get them on the track, don’t buy because they are going to need time.’ Tat was one of the things that impressed me about Scott. He listened.”

Fellow Washington horseman Stormy Hull of Critter Creek Farm consigned Old Pal, as he has for most of Miles’s sales horses.

“Stormy has done all the breaking of my horses for the last 20 years,” Miles said. “He’s very good at getting my horses ready for the sales. I speak with him nearly every day. I owe Stormy a ton of gratitude—he and his brother Guy, too.”

After debuting in mid-February, Old Pal was making his fourth lifetime start and stakes bow in the $151,000 Snow Chief, a 11⁄8-mile test on turf. While rating on the rail under jockey Juan Hernandez, he displayed both patience, then courage in the stretch as he charged through an opening to win by three-quarters of a length. It was his second victory to go with two prior placings.

Old Pal is the fourth winner from four starters for Athina Lee, and is her frst stakes winner. Athina Lee’s frst foal, Zabracadabra, a 2017 Washington-bred gelding by Harbor the Gold, has earned nearly $320,000 racing in allowance company mostly in Maryland. Owner Frank Sample picked him up for $22,000 as a yearling at the 2018 Washington Toroughbred Breeders’ Association sale. A second gelding, the multiple stakes-placed Cal-bred Ferrariano, by Mshawish, earned $115,620.

Old Pal has a full sister named Miss Will, a 2-year-old flly who recently had her frst published workout. Athina Lee, who lost a foal by the up-and-coming stallion Not Tis Time in 2022, is currently carrying a colt by Texas stallion Mr Speaker.

Almost none of it happened, however. Athina Lee was the $80,000 sales topper for Miles at the 2010 WTBA yearling sale to Shawn and Todd Hansen. But a nagging foot injury limited

her career, and she was claimed out of a $3,500 race at Emerald Downs in August 2014 by longtime Washington horse owner Jack Zaborac.

Months went by with no sign of Athina Lee on the track. Sensing the end of her racing career, Miles sought to make an ofer for her with plans to retire her for breeding. But numerous attempts to reach the 90-year-old Zaborac, a wellknown owner of a family bowling center in nearby Kent, went unheeded.

As the 2015 racing season was near-

ing its end, Miles was frustrated.

“Finally, one day I got a call from his son Dennis, who told me, ‘My dad wants to give her back to you. But frst, he’d like to talk to you.’ It turned out that all the time I was trying to fnd out about him, they were asking around about me. Anyway, they gave me the mare.” Two weeks later, Zaborac died.

Tat gift horse turned into Miles’ sweet broodmare. And not surprisingly, she loves his attention, just like her foals.

WHEN IS COLIC SURGERY NECESSARY?

Health 42 CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED June/July 2023 www.ctba.com
DUSTY PERIN DIAGNOSING COLIC’S CAUSE AND SEVERITY CAN DETERMINE WHETHER SURGERY IS NEEDED
One of the early signs of a possible colic is when horses look at their side and nip at their belly

Colic, a common problem, generally originates with a gut problem. But it sometimes can be due to other issues.

It’s not always easy to make an accurate diagnosis when examining the horse. Sometimes, even with the most modern technology, we can’t “look inside the horse” to see exactly what’s going on—to know whether it is an impaction, gas colic, twisted gut, or some rare problem.

Dr. Nora Grenager, an equine internal medicine specialist who has a lot of experience with colic cases, has practiced and taught in several areas of the U.S. and in other countries. She is currently flling in for another specialist at University College Dublin Veterinary Hospital in Ireland.

Grenager says veterinarians use a number of diagnostic techniques. Often these techniques are helpful with certain types of intestinal problems, but they may not always work for other problems to pinpoint the actual cause of trouble.

“Te goal of a colic workup is to identify the part of the GI tract involved, whether or not surgery is indicated, and the type of colic,” Grenager said. “We

use a combination of the horse’s history, physical exam fndings, abdominal palpation per rectum, presence or absence of nasogastric refux, ultrasound fndings, bloodwork, abdominocentesis and fuid analysis, abdominal radiographs, gastroscopy, and the clinician’s experience. Some of these diagnostics (such as measuring lactate levels) help us determine how critically ill the horse is and help indicate a need for surgery, while others (such as abdominal ultrasound) can give us specifc information.

“Field vets have increasingly more diagnostics available to them as technology advances. Today many vets carry an ultrasound, lactate meter, SAA (Serum Amyloid A) reader, possibly even an i-STAT machine (a handheld blood analyzer that delivers lab-quality, diagnostic results in minutes, enabling the vet to do stall-side lab work for electrolytes, lactate, glucose), and a gastroscope in their truck.”

Every piece of diagnostic information the vet obtains is like a piece of the big puzzle to help fgure out the cause of colic and how severe it is—whether it will it resolve medically or require surgery.

“Unfortunately, not all horses can undergo surgery,” Grenager said. “But it is still critical to know if the problem is go-

ing to resolve medically or requires surgery in order to prevent unnecessary sufering in the horse, and emotional and fnancial burden/strain on the client.”

Tevetwillusealltheinformationfrom the horse’s history, the physical exam, any other diagnostics performed, and most importantly, the horse’s response to treatment to help determine whether further treatment or referral to a medical facility is necessary.

“In spite of all these diagnostics, a lack of response to an appropriate level of analgesics/sedative is the number one indicator for need for colic surgery,” Grenager said. “If a horse is repeatedly uncomfortable in spite of therapy, even when we don’t know exactly the cause, the best option is to go in surgically and evaluate.

“Horses are huge animals, so even though we can often narrow down the possibilities with all these methods, we often can only make a defnitive diagnosis of ongoing colic signs with an exploratory laparotomy.

“I tend to try to categorize each colic I see in two diferent ways: frst, medical vs. surgical; second, small intestinal vs. large intestinal vs. other origins.”

Te workup includes history of the horse, pertinent management history, and

the physical exam.

A pertinent history of the horse will look at things like recent travel, any feed changes, water access, recent illness, any previous colic, recent medications, activity level, and any changes (pregnancy, foaling, etc.).

Pertinent management history will include whether the horse is kept at pasture or in a stall, amount of turnout/ exercise, weather/climate, feed (pasture,

also checked to see if it they are normal or increased.

“Temperature is usually normal in a colicky horse, but can be decreased if tissues have poor perfusion,” Grenager said. “Temperature can be mildly increased with sand enteritis, or increased with many types of infectious colitis.”

Gastrointestinal tract sounds can also give a clue. Te veterinarian will listen with a stethoscope in all four quadrants.

out of the rectum and check it for quality and quantity.

“If we fnd a distended bowel when palpating, we determine if it is large bowel vs. small,” Grenager said. “We check the location of the intestine, the nephrosplenic space (between the kidney and the spleen), splenic location, and base of the cecum.”

Nephrosplenic entrapment, also known as left dorsal displacement, is a type of colic that occurs when the left large colon gets entrapped over the nephrosplenic ligament. Te nephrosplenic ligament connects the left kidney to the spleen in the horse.

Te veterinarian can also palpate the urogenital tract via the rectum, checking the urinary bladder, the inguinal rings in a stallion, or the uterus/ovaries in mare. Grenager explained that this allows them to feel for any masses, lymph nodes, and the mesenteric root.

“We may also decide to tube the horse via nasogastric (NG) intubation,” she said. “For this procedure we rarely need to use a twitch. With the tube in the stomach, we can check refux—whether gas or liquid comes up the tube, and the color/odor/quantity of liquid. In a normal horse, we’d see about one liter of pleasant-smelling, watery refux. In an abnormal situation, it will be foul-smelling gas and/or up to two liters of malodorous, yellow or red liquid/feed.”

hay, roughage, grain, supplements, etc.), and whether any other horses have been afected.

Before starting the physical exam, the veterinarian will always evaluate the degree of pain. It is also important to check heart rate BEFORE sedation unless the horse is impossible to restrain because of pain.

“We then look at the horse’s gums and mucous membranes and check color (pink vs. pale vs. toxic/hyperemic), capillary refll time, moist vs. tacky/dry,” Grenager said. “Tis tells us about hydration, perfusion (amount of blood coming to the tissues), or shock.”

Respiratory rate and temperature are

“We check to see if sounds are normal vs. decreased vs. absent vs. increased/hypermotile,” Grenager said. “We also listen for sand in the front lower part of the belly. We evaluate both fanks for pings; this indicates areas of signifcant gas-distention in part of the GI tract such as the colon or cecum.”

Te veterinarian typically sedates the horse before the next steps of the exam, to relax the horse and also break the cycle of pain. Grenager says that before doing a rectal abdominal palpation, she usually gives Buscopan® (N-butylscopolammonium bromide, an anticholinergic) and may twitch the horse.

Te veterinarian will pull any manure

If the horse is dehydrated and needs fuid, it is typically administered via tube unless there is more than two liters of refux coming from the stomach and the veterinarian is concerned about obstruction or ileus (twisted/blocked gut).

In some situations, the veterinarian will resort to using clinical pathology.

“We can use lab work to help determine what a problem might be,” Grenager said. “We might want more detail, obtained with a blood sample, such as checking PCV (packed cell volume) and total solids (TS): parallel increase with dehydration/hemoconcentration (thickened blood). Te CBC (complete blood count) is often normal in ‘typical’ colic, but we may see stress leukogram; if severe neutropenia (low white blood count), we might think rupture or severe toxemia, and need to rule out an infectious cause (corona virus, Salmonellosis, etc.).

Health 44 CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED June/July 2023 www.ctba.com
Checking the abdomen for abnormal sounds aid in a veterinarian’s colic diagnosis DR. NORA GRENAGER PHOTOS

“Biochemistry can enable us to see pre-renal azotemia (abnormally high level of nitrogen waste products in the blood), low calcium, high lactate, high glucose, high GGT (an enzyme; high levels of GGT in the blood may be a sign of liver disease or damage to the bile ducts). High GGT may also be a sign of RDDLC— right dorsal displacement of the large colon.”

Another test can check whether the horse has acidosis (increased lactate) with hypovolemia (decreased volume of circulating blood in the body) or alkalosis, which is the opposite condition with too much base in body fuids, sometimes occurring with colon displacements.

Te veterinarian can also do an abdominal ultrasound, which provides a quick, noninvasive assessment and can be done out in the feld or at the clinic. Many vets can do a Fast Localized Abdominal Sonography of Horses (FLASH) exam, which is a focused abdominal ultrasound. It can image several areas of the abdomen for particular signs of colic-related problems. Tis can be done in about 5 to 10 minutes and provide a lot more information about what might be wrong.

“It can evaluate peritoneal (abdominal) fuid (quality, quantity), small intestine (distension, wall-thickening, motility), large intestine (location, and evaluate the nephrosplenic space, wall-thickening, torsion, or other displacement) and stomach (whether it is distended),” said Grenager. If sand colic or enteroliths might be suspected, the horse can be taken to the clinic or equine hospital for abdominal radiography.

Sometimes the veterinarian will do a belly tap (abdominocentesis) in the feld or at the clinic.

“Tis can help determine whether we need surgical vs. medical intervention— whether we can treat on the farm vs. a referral hospital for surgery,” Grenager said. “With a belly tap we can check abdominal fuid and evaluate its color (pale yellow vs. serosanguineous—containing blood and serum). If the fuid contains blood and serum, this is rapid indicator of need for surgery.”

Occasionally, the vet might pass an endoscope into the stomach, either in the feld or clinic, to check for gastric ulcers.

“Tese are rarely a cause of significant colic, but may be a concurrent issue with a diferent cause of chronic colic,” said Grenager.

“About 80% of the time, horses respond to the initial treatment performed by the vet during workup. However, if the horse becomes uncomfortable again, or if the initial exam reveals concerns, other options include possible additional diagnostics at the farm, such as abdominal ultrasound, or abdominocentesis. Te vet may repeat some treatment in the feld if the horse’s condition is stable and depending on how long it’s been since the last treatment.”

Te vet may administer intravenous fuid in the feld if the horse’s condition is stable or if referral to a clinic is not an

option, or may recommend referral to a veterinary hospital for further workup and treatment.

“If it is determined that the horse should be evaluated at a veterinary hospital, the vet will make sure your horse is as comfortable and stable for the trailer ride as possible,” Grenager said. “Tis may include further sedatives/pain medications, placement of an intravenous catheter and fuid administration prior to and during transport, leaving the nasogastric tube taped securely in place during transport. He/ she will call the veterinary clinic and speak with the veterinarian who will be receiving the horse.”

At the referral clinic, the medical team will make sure the horse is stable and, if necessary for a diagnosis or to help determine if surgery is needed, pursue further diagnostics.

“Tese may include bloodwork, abdominal ultrasound, abdominocentesis, evaluation of abdominal fuid, or abdominal radiographs,” Grenager said.

If the pieces of the puzzle all point to surgery and the horse is repeatedly uncomfortable in spite of many doses of pain medications, colic surgery will be discussed. Many horses that are referred to the hospital do respond to intravenous fuids, pain medications, and 24-hour monitoring and do not require colic surgery.

“Horses with enteritis or severe impaction may require longer hospitalization and supportive care,” Grenager said.

Sometimes pain or abnormal rectal fndings are factors that can be used alone to determine the need for surgery.

“Te situation is likely to require surgery if the horse’s pain is nonresponsive to appropriate analgesics, or if a rectal exam reveals abnormal fndings such as severe distension, or if nasogastric intubation produces copious refux (there is a blockage keeping material from going past the stomach),” Grenager said.

“Clinical pathology that indicates the need for surgery would include signifcantly increased lactate, or if abdominocentesis (belly tap) reveals serosanguineous fuid and signifcantly increased lactate (especially in comparison to peripheral blood lactate level).”

To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 73% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 17%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through June 25, 2023.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. Sires that are dead, pensioned, or no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old.
