JOHN BARR, A TRUE FRIEND OF THE INDUSTRY

The CTBA lost another great friend and colleague with the Feb. 5 passing of longtime board member John Barr. Mr. Barr, as most of the CTBA employees would call him, joined the board in April of 1996, which was roughly six months after I had started. He was very instrumental in my early years with the CTBA, as we jointly advocated for all the current benefts that are now available for those who breed and race California-breds. As John only had daughters, he would refer to our frequent phone calls as “a father and son talk.” He had great business sense and was all class.

John contributed to all facets of the Toroughbred industry. We saw the work he did for the CTBA, both as a past president and a member of the current board, and he was inducted into the CTBA Hall of Fame in 2019. Beyond that, however, he was only the third president in the long history of the Oak Tree Racing Association, taking that on when Dr. Jack Robbins stepped down in 2011. John also served on the Board of Stewards of Te Jockey Club and for fve years on the Board of Directors of Breeders’ Cup Ltd.

In every facet of his stewardship, John looked out for people and horses. He was rightly proud of his work

on Te Jockey Club’s safety committee, where he pushed for changes in medication protocols and better safety conditions for horses and riders. When he heard that Churchill Downs ofered free fu shots to people on the backside, he returned home and worked with the Oak Tree board to provide the same thing on California’s backstretches.

John’s service extended to the community as well. Up until the time of his passing, he was a member of the board of the Richard Nixon Foundation, which oversees Nixon’s presidential library in Yorba Linda. He previously served as treasurer until 2021.

Family meant a great deal to John, beginning with his wife, Betty. Tey were married 71 years and raised three daughters. John and Betty have four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Te Barr family loved to take vacations together, with Hawaii their favorite destination.

John is a native Californian, born in Riverside. He and Betty raised their daughters in Downey and moved to Orange County in 1977. John served in the Army and worked in the oil business for 14 years. He segued into commercial real estate, and with his

business success he and Betty were able to begin their Oakcrest Stable.

Under the Oakcrest banner, John and Betty bred and raised many good runners, most of them Cal-breds. Bountiful Dreamer won the 1998 California Cup Distaf, and Bob’s Lady was a double stakes winner. Beverly Z. was a homebred stakes winner who then produced Waingarth, another homebred stakes winner, for them. Oakcrest homebred Bert’s Melody captured the 2016 Fran’s Valentine Stakes, and more recently, homebred Cassie Belle, a daughter of Lucky Pulpit, earned more than $200,000.

You could always count on John for a laugh, as he had an amazing sense of humor. Whether it was a joke he would tell or a daily e-mail, he would always put a smile on your face. One such memory I have is during a CTBA board meeting several years ago when we were discussing water issues, and someone mentioned the Delta Smelt. John stood up and said, “I need to go, but I want to leave you all with this old saying: Of all the Smelt I have ever smelt, I never smelt a Smelt like that Smelt smelt.”

He was one of the best and I will miss him dearly.

CAL-BREDS SWEEP ARIZONA STAKES

California-breds captured both stakes Feb. 18 at Turf Paradise in Arizona. Don’t Get Pickled scored in the $60,000 Princess of Palms Stakes, followed by Special Moment two races later in the $60,000 Startac Stakes.

Bettors made Don’t Get Pickled the 5-2 favorite in the 71⁄2-furlong Princess of Palms on the turf. Ridden by Glenn Corbett, Don’t Get Pickled raced next-to-last for the frst part of the race before taking command and reaching the fnish line three-quarters of a length ahead of second-place Una Palabra in 1:30.22.

California-bred See Trough It was winning his sixth consecutive race when he captured the $76,350 El Dorado Shooter Stakes at Golden Gate Fields. At six furlongs, the El Dorado Shooter was for Cal-breds and California-sired runners and drew a feld of eight.

Seventh early under jockey Brayan Pena after a bumpy beginning, See Trough It began making up ground on the turn. He overhauled favored Top Harbor in the fnal yards to score by three-quarters of a length in 1:09.18.

Dr. Ed Allred bred See Trough It, a 6-year-old gelded son of Curlin to Mischief—Crystal House, by Chester House. Trainer Milton Pineda and owners Belico Racing LLC and Lizbeth Medina claimed See Trough It for $25,000 out of a six-furlong turf sprint victory in October at Santa Anita. Tat race was his second in the current win streak.

Miguel Hernandez trains Don’t Get Pickled for owner Stable HMA. Harry and Cheryl Keshian bred the 3-year-old daughter of Misremembered—C C’s Pride, by Successful Appeal.

In the Startac, also at 71 2 furlongs on turf, Special Moment went of at 13-1. Corbett was again aboard, and they came on late to score by three-quarters of a length in 1:30.28.

Bart Hone trains Special Moment for owners Chris Aulds and Gaylon McGee. Tommy Town Toroughbreds bred the 3-yearold gelded son of Stanford—Blame It Onthesong, by Blame.

See Trough It won his next three races at Los Alamitos in what technically were mixed races, all at 1,000 yards. However, in all three races, two allowance events and the 1,000-yard Quarter Horse and Toroughbred Winter Championship #2, only Toroughbreds competed. See Trough It’s next start came in the El Dorado Shooter. Combining his earnings from Toroughbred tracks and the mixed meetings at Los Alamitos, See Trough It has earned nearly $300,000.

NORTHERN SALE GRADUATE TAKES TURFWAY PARK STAKES

Tommy Town Toroughbreds’ homebred Opening Buzz, a graduate of the Northern California yearling sale, won the $97,852 Wishing Well Stakes Jan. 28 at Turfway Park in Kentucky. Ninth early under jockey Walter Rodriguez, California-bred Opening Buzz closed ground in the 61 2-furlong Wishing Well and won by a length in 1:16.65.

out of the Unbridled’s Song mare Open Mic. Jonathan Wong trains the 4-year-old flly, who has four wins in six starts, with earnings of $152,585.

Santa Anita also conducts a stakes called the Wishing Well, which is run over the downhill turf course. Cal-bred Big Summer almost made it a Wishing Well sweep when she ran second by just a nose to Freedom Flyer in the Feb. 28 Wishing Well in California.

California-bred See Through It in El Dorado Shooter wins sixth straight

RANCHO TEMESCAL THOROUGHBRED PARTNERS FORMED

The team of California-based owner and breeder Tim Cohen of Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal and Kentucky-based bloodstock agent Joe Miller of Kern Thoroughbreds are launching Rancho Temescal Thoroughbred Partners (RTTP). The initiative will allow individuals to tap into a formula that has yielded dozens of stakes winners and top ownership honors at Del Mar and Santa Anita.

Founded by the late Jed Cohen, Tim’s father, Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal used Miller’s expertise to identify and acquire raceready European and North American bloodstock through public and private purchases. The business model has yielded multiple grade 1 winner

Janet, grade 1 winner River Boyne, and multiple grade 1 winner and 2021 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) runner-up Dr. Schivel, among others.

“Before he passed away, my father and I had many discussions about the future of horse racing, and we agreed that the individual ownership model is now going away,” said Tim Cohen. “We were fortunate to own horses without partners for over 60 years, except for a few family friends. This experience taught me that winning and racing are better with friends, associates, and like-minded enthusiasts.”

Under the RTTP business model, one payment up front will cover acquisition and training and the dissolution of the partnership approximately every three years, ending with a return distribution. RTTP will engage 10 or fewer horses per year, to be based throughout the U.S., with Miller handling the daily management and partner communications.

UC DAVIS GETS GRAYSON FUNDING

The University of California, Davis received funding from the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation for two of its projects in 2023. The Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation in February announced that it has authorized an expenditure of $1,498,077 to fund 12 new projects and nine continuing projects at 13 universities, as well as two career development awards. The 2023 slate of research brings Grayson’s totals since 1983 to more than $34.1 million to underwrite 426 projects at 45 universities.

The two UC Davis studies are titled Validation

of Biomarkers for Equine Neurodegeneration and PET MRI Sport Horse Fetlock. The frst study, headed by Dr. Carrie J. Finno, is expected to improve the diagnosis of spinal cord disease in horses. The second, headed by Dr. Mathieu Spriet, will compare 18F-NaF positron emission tomography (PET) with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for assessment of fetlock injuries in sport horses. Finno is the director of the Center for Equine Health at UC Davis, while Spriet has been an integral part of establishing the PET equipment at Santa Anita.

IN Memoriam

Jimmy Dotson

Jimmy Dotson, a former jockey and a California owner and trainer for many years, died recently. A longtime California Thoroughbred Breeders Association member, Dotson trained such runners as multiple stakes winner Due to the King, bred and owned by his wife, Bonnie Seltzer.

As a jockey, Dotson won his frst race at Vallejo. He won more than 1,800 races, primarily in the Midwest. Seltzer bred Due to the King from the couple’s Peter Vadnais mare Do Declare. Under Dotson’s tutelage, Due to the King won 11 of 48 races and earned $525,048. The colt won six stakes, including the Montclair Handicap and Oakland Handicap back-to-back at Golden Gate Fields in 1991. Dotson retired from training in 2000, having won many races in Northern and Southern California and on the fair circuit.

In addition to his wife, Dotson is survived by his son, Wayne, and his daughter-in-law, Lisa.

Larry and Suzanne Bollmann

Longtime California breeders and California Thoroughbred Breeders Association members Larry and Suzanne Bollmann died within a month of each other after 54 years of marriage. Larry died Dec. 10, and Suzanne followed him 21 days later.

The Bollmanns raised horses on their 104-acre Blackhawk Farm just south of Eureka near the Oregon border. Horses they bred included graded stakes winner I’m a Jewel, and they once stood the stallion Uncle Denny at Tommy Town Thoroughbreds.

The Bollmanns operated Bollmann’s Taxidermy from 1978 until they retired in 1994. They also co-owned Oak Leaf Productions, which brought many country music concerts to their local area in the mid1990s.

Successful breeders of Paint Horses and working cow horses, the Bollmanns entered Thoroughbred breeding by accident. A man who was hauling a sick Thoroughbred mare pulled into their farm and ended up giving them the mare. She was Soaring Jewel, a daughter of Golden Eagle II. The Bollmanns nursed the mare back to health, and she became the dam of I’m a Jewel.

I’m a Jewel, a California-bred son of Somethingfabulous, earned $251,495, though he never raced for his breeders. He won the 1997 California Derby (G3).

The Bollmanns were also members of the syndicate that stood In Excess in California. That was a major factor in their decision to purchase Uncle Denny, a son of In Excess, for stud duty. Cal-bred Uncle Denny won the 2005 El Camino Real Derby (G3) and earned $291,981.

Burt Bacharach

A legendary composer, songwriter, record producer, and pianist, as well as a major Thoroughbred owner, Burt Bacharach died Feb. 8. Born in Kansas City, Mo., Bacharach, who would have been 95 on May 12, passed away at his home in Los Angeles.

Bacharach loved racing and owned his frst runner in 1968, when Battle Royal won his career debut while trained by Charlie Whittingham. Bacharach soon developed close friendships with a number of prominent racing personalities, including Hollywood Park’s Marjorie Everett and jockeys such as Bill Shoemaker and Lafft Pincay, Jr.

In addition to a multitude of entertainment awards for songs such as “Alfe,” “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head,” “The Look of Love,” “Walk on By,” “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” and “What the World Needs Now is Love,” Bacharach also enjoyed major success in racing. Heartlight No. One, who was trained by Pedro Marti and named for the Neil Diamond hit “Heartlight,” won fve races in a row in 1983, including the Hollywood Oaks (G1), Del Mar Oaks (G2), and Ruffan Handicap (G1) at Belmont Park. Heartlight No. One was subsequently voted the 1983 Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old flly. Bacharach bred Heartlight No. One in the name of his Blue Seas Music Inc. Other homebred stakes winners he campaigned included the Richard Mandella-trained Soul of the Matter and Afternoon Deelites, both millionaires.

Honored by the Turf Publicists of America in 1971 with its “Big Sport of Turfdom” award, Bacharach was also chosen as the 1995 Maryland Breeder of the Year.

■ Visitant to Arroyo Vista

Visitant, a multiple stakes-winning son of Ghostzapper, has been retired from racing and is beginning his stallion career in 2023 at Arroyo Vista Farm. A homebred owned by Henry Williamson of Williamson Racing LLC, Visitant will stand for an introductory rate of $2,500.

Beginning his career at Golden Gate Fields, Visitant won in his racing debut in 2019 and added the Alcatraz Stakes at that track in his fourth start. He competed throughout California and Kentucky, winning four more stakes and earning $676,927. At Turfway Park, Visitant set a track record of 1:15.07 for 61⁄2 furlongs. He won 11 of his 20 starts, with three seconds and two thirds.

Now 7, Visitant is out of the Distorted Humor mare Peppermint Lounge, who won four of six races and fnished second in the 2008 Playa Del Rey Stakes for Williamson.

“Visitant is our number one earning homebred male horse of all time and leads all runners in number of wins,” said Williamson. “He has been so versatile, winning stakes races from six furlongs to a 11⁄8 miles with success on dirt and synthetic tracks.”

■ First Foal for Cistron

Hronis Racing’s Cistron, who stands at John Harris’ Harris Farms in Coalinga, was represented by his frst reported foal Jan. 30. The flly, the frst foal out of the Acclamation mare Patriot Missile, was born at Harris, and she is a fourth-generation Harris Farms homebred.

California-bred Patriot Missile started only three times and is a half sister to 2020 Fran’s Valentine Stakes winner and grade 3-placed Super Patriot, a daughter of Unusual Heat. The second dam, Patriot C H, is a half sister to grade 3 winner Lucky J. H., also a Harris-bred. The family goes back to Careless Notion, the dam of Cal-bred champions Cacoethes and Fabulous Notion.

Cistron, a 9-year-old son of The Factor, was a stakes-placed winner at 2 and a stakes winner at 3. At 5 he captured the Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) and Kona Gold Stakes (G2) and at 6 added the San Simeon Stakes (G3T). For his career, Cistron won or placed in 13 black-type stakes, including six in graded company. He competed for Hronis Racing, who partnered with Little Red Feather Racing on him in 2017, and earned $768,719.

DEL MAR TO HOST 2024 BREEDERS’ CUP

Del Mar has been named to host the 2024 Breeders’ Cup World Championships. Breeders’ Cup announced that the California track would be the site of the 2024 event, to be held Nov. 1 and Nov. 2. The Breeders’ Cup World Championships consists of 14 grade 1 races with purses and awards totaling more than $31 million.

“We are delighted to announce that the World Championships will be returning to Del Mar next year for what is sure to be an unforgettable two-year-run on the West Coast,” said Drew Fleming, Breeders’ Cup president and CEO. “Breeders’ Cup has always been a strong supporter of California racing, and we look forward to showcasing this wonderful venue once again to our horsemen and fans from around the world.”

Planning with Del Mar management and staff is already under way. Del Mar has previously hosted the World Championships in 2017 and 2021. This year’s 40th running of the event will be held at Santa Anita Nov. 3 and 4.

“We’re excited for the return of Breeders’ Cup to Del Mar in 2024,” said Josh Rubinstein, president of Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. “The prestige of the event combined with our venue’s iconic, seaside setting makes for an extraordinary weekend.”

10 YEARS AGO

TIZ FLIRTATIOUS was one of the most consistent California-breds ever, rarely running out of the money and most of the time getting to the winner’s circle. She captured her frst of three graded victories in the $150,250 Santa Ana Stakes (G2T) at Santa Anita March 24, 2013. The second choice to Lady of Shamrock, she defeated that rival by a length, as both came from well off the pace. Tiz Flirtatious, ridden by Julien Leparoux, completed 11⁄8 miles on turf in 1:46.62. Marty Jones trained the 5-year-old daughter of Tizbud— Masquerade Belle, by Victory Gallop, for owner/breeder Pamela Ziebarth. Tiz Flirtatious went on to win that year’s John C. Mabee Stakes (G2T) and Rodeo Drive Stakes (G1T) and was named champion Cal-bred older female and turf horse.

25 YEARS AGO

Millionaire California-bred GOURMET GIRL won her frst stakes in the $100,000 Bay Meadows Oaks (G3) at Bay Meadows March 28, 1998. She walloped the feld by 12 lengths under jockey Roberto Gonzalez after pressing the pace early in the 11⁄16-mile race, getting the distance in 1:43.43. Pico Perdomo

trained Gourmet Girl for owners Massengale, Massengale Sr., and Sledge Stable. Carl and Olivia Cannata bred Gourmet Girl, a 3-year-old daughter of Cee’s Tizzy—Rhondaling, by Welsh Pageant. Later acquired by Gary Tanaka, Gourmet Girl went on to win fve more stakes, including the 2001 Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) and Vanity Handicap (G1), earn $1,255,373, and be named the 2001 champion Eclipse Award-winning older female and champion Cal-bred older female. She was sold for $2,250,000 at the 2002 Keeneland November breeding stock sale and produced stakes-placed Luxury Class.

50 YEARS AGO

Former champion jockey John Longden bred and trained California-bred DIPLOMATIC AGENT, winner of the Sierra Madre Handicap (G3) at Santa Anita March 8, 1973. Five-yearold Diplomatic Agent had gone winless in his last 19 outings, but he rallied along the rail after breaking last in the 61⁄2-furlong race. Under jockey Rudy Rosales, Diplomatic Agent drew out to a daylight lead and lasted over fast-closing Palladium to win by a half-length. Diplomatic Agent’s time of 1:14.45 was just one-ffth off fellow Cal-bred Right or Wrong’s track record. Longden trained Diplomatic Agent for his wife, Hazel. A son of Envoy—Royal Rhyme, by Royal Serenade, Diplomatic Agent also won the 1971 San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita and the 1973 Premiere Handicap (G3) at Hollywood Park.

Mare and Foal Will Be a Draw on Ag Day

A mare and foal will again be the highlight of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association booth during California Agricultural Day (Ag Day) at the California Capitol. Te event is scheduled for Tuesday, March 21, and the CTBA is making arrangements with a California breeder in the area to provide a mare and foal for the day.

Te CTBA will represent breeders during Ag Day, ofering information to legislators on the vital role that the Toroughbred industry plays in the state’s agricultural economy. CTBA staf will be in attendance at the CTBA booth, along with several CTBA Board Members, to promote the sport and educate visitors on general horse facts and Toroughbred racing and breeding in California.

Te day is held in conjunction with National Agricultural Day as a way to recognize and celebrate the abundance provided by agriculture.

Northern Sale Slated for Aug. 15

The CTBA Sales Northern California Yearling & Horses of Racing Age Sale is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 15. It will be held at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. Entries will close Thursday, June 1.

Mary Forney Joins CTF Board

Mary Forney has spent her entire working career in the California Toroughbred industry, and the California Toroughbred Foundation is lucky to have someone with her wealth of experience join the board. In one sense, she is coming home because her frst job was as secretary to Brian Sweeney, general manager of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association.

Once her mother took Mary and her sisters to the races at Santa Anita, Mary’s dream was to work in the industry. She remained at the CTBA for 14 years, and she and her husband, Jim, started their family of three children. During her time at the CTBA, Mary also wrote articles for this magazine.

In 1990, fellow Foundation trustee Jane Goldstein convinced Forney to come work for Santa Anita as the program production coordinator. Forney spent 13 years at Santa Anita, later as the executive assistant to the president and simulcast coordinator. In dealing with out-of-state simulcast contracts, she traveled to tracks throughout the country.

She joined the Toroughbred Owners of California as director of operations in 2004, rising to executive director in 2020. Following 18 years with TOC, Forney retired in July 2022. She has served on the board of the California Toroughbred Horsemen’s Foundation and in 2006 was named Outstanding Woman in Toroughbred Racing by the California Legislature. Forney continues to give back to the industry by also serving on the board of directors of the Winners Foundation.

“Because of my early association with the CTBA and admiration for the Carleton Burke Library and the work of the Foundation, I am particularly pleased to join the CTF board,” Forney said, “and look forward to working with a dedicated group of individuals.”

FUN TO DREAM COMES FROM LAST TO SCORE BIG

Fun to Dream accomplished a difcult double in adding the $200,500 Santa Monica Stakes (G2) to her earlier victory in the $301,000 La Brea Stakes (G1). Te feat requires a 3-year-old flly to win against her peers in the fnal days of the year and then turn around as a newly minted 4-year-old and beat older distafers.

Another good Cal-bred, Teddy’s Promise, won both races a decade ago. Tat flly capped of 2011 with a win in the La Brea and was named the season’s champion Calbred 3-year-old female. In her next start Teddy’s Promise fnished ffth in the Santa Monica with a difcult trip, but returned in 2013 to capture the race.

Fun to Dream encountered her own difcult trip in her only loss to date, when she fnished second in a Sept. 4 allowance/ optional claiming race and was disqualifed to ninth for interference. Otherwise, her record is spotless, with six wins, four of them in stakes.

“Fun to Dream looked so good today,” Bafert said. “Coming into this race she was doing the best I’ve seen her do.”

Leading rider Juan Hernandez, who has piloted Fun to Dream in all of her starts, was back aboard. Bettors made the flly the 1-2 favorite.

Tough Fun to Dream has raced close to the pace in most of

her races, several rivals outbroke her in the Santa Monica. As the feld headed down the backstretch, she was sixth and last.

“She broke, but they just ran away from her,” Bafert said. “She left there and I could tell she was taking dirt.”

Hernandez knew that Fun to Dream was relaxing and wasn’t worried.

“Around the three-eighths, I felt like I had a lot of horse,” the jockey said. “Last time turning for home, she exploded and passed everybody, and today she did the

exact same thing.”

Overhauling one horse before the turn, Fun to Dream passed fourth-place Anacapa deep in the turn and then took aim at the trio in front of her. Splitting horses, she caught leader Awake At Midnyte in midstretch and drew away to score by 21⁄2 lengths, stopping the clock in 1:22.75 for seven furlongs. Awake At Midnyte, who won the only race Fun to Dream lost and ran second in the La Brea, fnished second again.

Pageler is continuing the legacy of her late husband, Mike, who began breeding Lutess, the dam of Fun to Dream. After the mare produced multiple stakes-winning Cal-bred Heck Yeah to the cover of Acclamation, Bafert ofered to breed her to Arrogate, a horse he trained who became not only an Eclipse Award winner but the richest North American racehorse in history. Tough Mike died before Fun to Dream was born, he knew Lutess was in foal, and Connie is seeing Mike’s dream through.

DAM OF FUN TO DREAM HONORED

When Mike Pageler decided to breed Lutess after she fnished racing in early 2012, few people expected great things of the mare. After all, the Live Your Dream Racing, of which Pageler was a part, had only spent $8,000 to claim her. But Lutess has subsequently produced two-time graded winner Fun to Dream and multiple stakes winner Heck Yeah, and she has been named the 2022 California Broodmare of the Year.

Trainer Bob Bafert had put in the claim on Lutess for Live Your Dream Racing. Years later, after Lutess had produced California-bred Heck Yeah, Bafert recalled her origins. He noted that “Jerry and Ann Moss bred her,” so she came from good

stock. Te Mosses had raced the likes of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Giacomo, a homebred, and superstar Zenyatta.

A daughter of Maria’s Mon—Alchema, by Menifee, Lutess has a bottom line that traces back to stakes winner Careless Moment. Te dam of two graded winners, Careless Moment is also the second dam of millionaire and sire Practical Joke.

In her ffth start for the Mosses, Lutess fnished second in a maiden claiming race to Perfect Feat, who would go on to produce two-time California-bred Horse of the Year Spiced Perfection. Perfect Feat was named California’s Broodmare of the Year in 2018 and 2019. Lutess later won back-to-back races at Santa Anita and a third race at Hollywood Park.

Bafert trained Heck Yeah for Pageler, Bob Baedeker, and Michael Sigband, and the gelding won the 2018 California Cup Turf Sprint, California Cup Derby,

and Echo Eddie Stakes. Bafert, who had trained champion Arrogate, then partnered with Pageler to breed Lutess to Arrogate in 2018, resulting in Cal-bred Fun to Dream.

Mike Pageler died in late 2018, and his wife, Connie, campaigns Fun to Dream in partnership with Bafert’s wife, Jill. With Bob Bafert training the flly, Fun to Dream has already won four stakes, including the grade 2 Santa Monica Stakes (see previous page).

Connie Pageler sold Lutess privately to agent Mersad Metanovich for Premier Toroughbred, which also owns California sire Smiling Tiger. Premier bred Spiced Perfection, a daughter of Smiling Tiger—Perfect Feat. Lutess has had three consecutive Smiling Tiger foals. Phil Lebherz of Premier said that Lutess is being bred to Triple Crown winner Justify this year on a foal-sharing arrangement with Bafert.

BOB BAFFERT STARTED WITH CAL-BREDS AND TODAY TRAINS FUN TO DREAM

Those who follow horse racing are well aware of trainer Bob Baffert’s Hall of Fame career, one of the greatest in the sport’s history.

Tere have been controversies along the way and many detractors, of course. But his record over the past 30 years—17 winners of Triple Crown races, 18 Breeders’ Cup victories, and four Eclipse Awards as the nation’s leading trainer—speaks volumes.

Long before he began conditioning renowned performers such as Triple Crown winners American Pharaoh and Justify

and Eclipse champions Authentic, Arrogate, and Point Given, to name a few, Bafert was known as “Mr. Cal Cup” for his success in the early years of the California Cup for state-breds. In the early to mid-1990s, most of Bafert’s clients were based in California, and the majority of his stock was comprised of horses bred in the Golden State.

“It’s been a journey, but it was Cal-breds that really got me going,” said Bafert, who turned 70 Jan. 13. He began in Southern California as a Quarter Horse trainer from Arizona in the 1980s before eventually switching to the Toroughbred game.

In 1991, he won three Cal Cup races on the same card, all for owners who would become cornerstones for his later success: Mike Pegram’s Letthebighossroll (Sprint Handicap), Robert and Beverly Lewis’ Ebonair (Juvenile Stakes), and Robert H. Walter’s Charmonnier (Classic), in which the Battonier gelding defeated future Hall of Famer Best Pal by a nose.

As the barn’s accomplishments grew and some of the world’s leading owners turned to Bafert, Cal-breds took on a smaller role. But in 2022, the development of one Cal-bred stood out above the rest—Fun to Dream.

For his success in developing the multiple graded stakes-winning daughter of Arrogate out of California Broodmare of the Year Lutess, as well as his many Cal-breds over the years, Bafert has been named the 2022 California Toroughbred Breeders Association Trainer of the Year. A member of the CTBA’s Hall of Fame since 2017, Bafert is a frst-time winner of this annual award.

Fun to Dream, who debuted as a 3-year-old in late May with a maiden allowance victory, won fve of six races in 2022. She concluded her frst season of racing with stakes victories in the Betty Grable Stakes at Del Mar and the La Brea Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita. Fun to Dream kicked of her 4-year-old campaign with an impressive score in the Feb. 4 Santa Monica Stakes (G2) and has now earned $546,590.

Bafert bred the powerfully built gray flly in a foal-sharing arrangement with the late Mike Pageler, who owned Lutess, a daughter of Maria’s Mon. Baffert’s wife, Jill, co-owns Fun to Dream with Mike’s wife, Connie, who is also the co-breeder after Mike’s death.

“She’s all Arrogate,” said Bafert of the flly, noting that he wants to see Fun to Dream try routing, considering how well she fnishes her sprint races. “She looks like him; she runs like him. She’s really flling out.

“She’s been a joy. Tat’s why we breed horses. When Fun To Dream hit the stretch in the La Brea and took the lead, I’d never heard Jill scream as loud as she did then. Tat win really lifted us all up.”

Bafert notes the La Brea triumph was especially gratifying because of his close friendship with Mike Pageler, who died before Fun to Dream was foaled, as well as Bob Baedeker, a longtime friend who connected him to the Pagelers through Baedeker’s Live Your Dream Racing Stables.

Fun to Dream is only the latest in a long line of successful Bafert-trained Cal-breds.

He credits the Walters-owned Cavonnier, winner of the 1995 California Cup Juvenile, with opening many doors for him, thanks to the gelding’s near-miss in the Kentucky Derby (G1) the following year. In probably the closest fnish in Derby history, Cavonnier lost by a nose to

Grindstone after gaining a clear lead in the stretch.

“I had no plans to run Cavonnier in the Derby that year,” recalled Bafert. “But he was working so great I thought, ‘I’m gonna take a shot at the Santa Anita Derby.’ Chris McCarron was riding him, and he shot through an opening to get the lead in the stretch and went on to win easy (by nearly two lengths). I tell you, it was just the greatest feeling ever. It was unbelievable. I screamed so hard I felt my stomach tightening up. I could hardly breathe.”

And so it was on to the Kentucky Derby, where Cavonnier surprised some before being nailed at the wire. Disappointing, yes, but Bafert notes he won the race the following two years with the Lewises’ Silver Charm and Pegram’s Real Quiet.

“You have to be horse crazy to be in this game,” Bafert said. “You have to be tough to be able to handle all the disappointments that come along. But I believe in fate; I believe everything happens for a reason.”

Cavonnier lost, but Bafert gained na-

tional recognition as a result, attracting many new owners from around the country.

“In 1992, we won the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) with Tirty Slews,” he said. “But I didn’t get much bounce from that. It wasn’t until Cavonnier came along that we really started branching out.”

John Mabee’s Golden Eagle Farm produced many top horses, mostly Cal-breds, for Bafert to train, led by General Challenge. Te General Meeting gelding won the Santa Anita Derby (G1) and Pacifc Classic (G1) as a 3-year-old in 1999, then the Strub Stakes (G2) and Santa Anita Handicap (G1) the following year. He earned nearly $2.9 million over a 21-race career and ranks eighth among all-time Cal-breds in purses.

Other Cal-bred stars from Golden Eagle trained by Bafert included Notable Career, winner of the 2000 Oak Leaf (G1); Favorite Funtime, who captured the Santa Maria (G1) in 2002; and multiple graded stakes winner Yearly Report, the Black-Eyed Susan (G2) and Delaware Oaks (G2) victress of 2004.

Among Bafert’s favorite horses was Golden Eagle’s Magical Allure, who won the 1998 La Brea. Tat fulflled a promise Bafert made to Mabee—that she would be a grade I winner—in order to convince Mabee not to sell her privately to Godolphin for $300,000. She earned $620,480 on the track and later sold for $4.2 million at auction to Shadwell Stables while in foal to Storm Cat.

Having reached age 70—11 years after surviving a heart attack in Dubai—Bafert says he is a better trainer now than he ever has been, and doesn’t want to retire.

“I feel like I’m good for another solid 10 years,” he said, comparing himself to his former California rival D. Wayne Lukas. “He’s 87 and he still gets up on his pony in the mornings.

“I’m 70 but when I look in the mirror I see 60. I’m actually more motivated now and enjoying horse racing because I have a great group of clients that really support me. My wife, 19 years younger, and 18-year-old son (Bode), keep me young.”

Owner Nick Alexander knew his homebred flly Rose Maddox faced a tough chore against the undefeated Chancery Way in the inaugural running of the $75,000 Moscow Burning Stakes at Golden Gate Fields Jan. 28.

But when Chancery Way, never headed in her previous four races, broke tardily and trailed the feld out of the gate in the one-mile synthetic track test for California-bred or California-sired older fllies and mares, Alexander said to himself, “Maybe we have a chance.”

Although Chancery Way recovered quickly and gained the lead heading into the frst turn, that initial burst

of speed may have cost her in deep stretch. Rose Maddox, handled with patience by Golden Gate leading rider Assael Espinoza, burst to the front at the sixteenth pole and won by one length in a time of 1:38.67. Chancery Way, the 8-5 favorite in the eight-horse feld, held second by three-quarters of a length over 48-1 shot Shezarunaway.

Rose Maddox, a much-bothered second after stumbling badly in the Melair Stakes last spring at Santa Anita, earned her frst black-type victory in the Moscow Burning for trainer Steve Miyadi at odds of 3-1.

Alexander was encouraged by the victory for the gray 4-year-old daughter of Grazen because “it was the frst time ever she broke without stumbling or hesitating,” the owner/breeder explained.

“She’s a good one,” Alexander added, “but she’s one of those horses you always think after the race, ‘If she could have only had broken better or could have stayed out of trouble. . .’ ”

Tis was the 50th stakes win for Alexander, whose frst came when Grazen captured the 2009 Afrmed Stakes (G3).

Rose Maddox became the 20th stakes winner for the 17-year-old Grazen.

“I used to say I was the king of the $12,500 claimer at Golden Gate Fields,” said Alexander, who owns a 280-acre ranch in Santa Ynez. “But Grazen changed that.”

Out of the Unusual Heat mare Heat the Rocks, Rose Maddox picked up her fourth career win in 11 starts and boosted her earnings to $224,062. She has victories over dirt, turf, and synthetic racing surfaces.

She’s the ffth named foal from Heat the Rocks, purchased for $65,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November breeding stock sale by Berkey Bloodstock for Alexander when the mare was in foal to Munnings. Alexander has bred Heat the Rocks to Grazen four times since. Roy Hobbs, a 3-year-old colt, and 2-year-old colt Alibi Terhune are yet to race.

Rose Maddox is named after the late country singer/songwriter who overcame abject poverty in Alabama and traveled west with her family on $35 to chart a brilliant solo career in California. Te singer performed at times with country greats Buck Owens and Bill Monroe.

“She’s a great story,” Alexander said. “I like naming my horses after people who have persevered over great adversity.”

A board member and former chairman with the Toroughbred Owners of California, Alexander cited fellow board member Lindsay LaRoche for the establishment of the Moscow Burning Stakes, as well as two other Northern California stakes debuting later this year as part of the Golden State Series.

“He has really pushed hard for more stakes racing in Northern California for a long time, and he deserves credit for making it happen,” Alexander said.

THE CHOSEN VRON HAS WON FIVE CONSECUTIVE STAKES

If bettors were looking for a hunch in the $98,000 Tiznow Stakes at Santa Anita Feb. 20, they could have backed Te Chosen Vron, the only horse in the feld descended from Tiznow. But chances are that they were already heading to the windows to bet him because he went of as the 3-10 favorite.

Te one-mile Tiznow initially attracted a feld of fve, but Finneus was scratched. Tat left three rivals all coming of victories—Coalinga Road in the Unusual Heat Turf Classic Presented by City National Bank and Leyas Candy and Club Cal of allowance/optional claiming races. But Te Chosen Vron brought a recent streak of four consecutive stakes wins to the party.

Te previous month, Te Chosen Vron and Coalinga Road competed in two different events on the California Cup card. Coalinga Road went in the Turf Classic at 11⁄8 miles on turf, while Te Chosen Vron sped home on top in the six-furlong Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint on the main track.

Te pair had previously met in the seven-furlong Cary Grant Stakes Nov. 19 at Del Mar. Te Chosen Vron defeated Big City Lights in that event, with Coalinga Road third after getting bumped and shufed back early.

fnished one-two in the one-mile Los Alamitos event. In the California Cup Sprint, Te Chosen Vron set the pace, but the result was the same.

Big City Lights bypassed the Tiznow, named for the 2000 national Horse of the Year and two-time Cal-bred Horse of the Year. When the gate opened, Te Chosen Vron took command early under regular rider Hector Berrios, though Leyas Candy stayed close, within a half-length for the frst half-mile.

“From the break my horse showed a lot of class,” Berrios said. “I just got into position and kept some pressure on the other horse.”

61⁄2 lengths on top while stopping the timer in 1:36.16. Leyas Candy fnished second over Coalinga Road.

Eric Kruljac trains Te Chosen Vron for himself, Sondereker Racing, Robert Fetkin, and Richard Tornburgh. Te partners bred the gelding, a 5-year-old son of Vronsky—Tiz Molly, by Tiz Wonderful.

“When I saw on the turn that the fourhorse rider (Juan Hernandez on Leyas Candy) was pumping his arms a little bit and Te Chosen Vron was just going easy, that’s when I was confdent that he was going to do it,” Tornburgh said.

Tornburgh also pointed out Tiznow’s role in Te Chosen Vron’s pedigree. Tiz Molly’s sire, Tiz Wonderful, is a son of Tiznow.

Kruljac was especially proud of his charge, coming of that big effort in the Jan. 7 Cal Cup Sprint.

“We gave him enough time to bounce back, and I think two turns is defnitely his preference,” Kruljac said. “He pretty much can do anything, which is really a blessing.”

Te Chosen Vron was winning his 10th race in 14 starts, with one second and two thirds. He increased his lifetime bankroll to $672,678.

Because Alice Marble had defeated open company on the turf in the 2022 Wishing Well Stakes, owner/breeder Nick Alexander thought that’s what they would try again. But jockey Flavien Prat had been breezing her on the dirt for trainer Phil D’Amato and advised returning to dirt, especially with the $100,000 Spring Fever Stakes the day after the Wishing Well.

“He thought she travels very well on dirt, and this might be the play rather than run here in the grass race,” D’Amato said.

Tough Alice Marble had been performing well on turf—she won the Fran’s Valentine Stakes last year in addition to the Wishing Well—she was actually perfect on the dirt. She won back-to-back dirt races for Prat in April and June of

2021 at Santa Anita and a dirt sprint at Los Alamitos late that year for jockey Kyle Frey. Te 6-year-old mare hadn’t competed on the surface in 14 months, however.

Ten Alice Marble drew the rail in the fve-horse Spring Fever, a six-furlong sprint.

“Te rail isn’t ideal,” D’Amato said, “but she is a flly that is very tactical out of the gate.”

Te rail did indeed work against Alice Marble. She broke well in second,

but her four rivals took on each other early, leaving her in ffth behind a wall of horses. Prat was going to have to fgure out which path to try.

Ultimately, the jockey found a slender seam between horses at the eighth pole. Alice Marble bravely responded to Prat’s urging to take the lead, and she drew of to score by 13⁄4 lengths in 1:10.29 as the even-money favorite. Taming the Tigress fnished second over Eddie’s New Dream.

“She broke well; I was traveling super,” Prat said. “She grabbed the bridle around the quarter pole, and unfortunately I had nowhere to go. So I just had to bide my time. When we had a little space, she really jumped into it and was really game.”

Alexander was especially pleased with the victory because he had brought his family to the races for the day. He didn’t expect Alice Marble to add quite that much drama, though.

“Tat hole was about this wide,” said Alexander, holding his hands barely apart. “Flavien was right—he said she is better on the dirt. According to Phil and Jessica (Pyfer, who gallops the mare for D’Amato), she had been training really, really well.”

In her most recent start prior to the Spring Fever, Alice Marble ran third to Big Summer and Eddie’s New Dream in the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint Stakes Presented by John Deere.

“In that last race, she never broke and she got a little too far back and then came running,” Alexander said.

Alice Marble, who also fnished second in the 2022 Monrovia Stakes (G2T), is by Alexander’s leading California sire Grazen out of the More Tan Ready mare Unsung Heroine. It is a cross that has worked fabulously before. Alice Marble’s full sister Enola Gray won six stakes for Alexander and was voted California-bred champion 3-year-old female of 2016. Unfortunately, Unsung Heroine died last year, but Alexander is looking forward to Enola Gray’s ofspring and, eventually, that of Alice Marble.

MARE IN FOAL TO HALLADAY BRINGS $70,000

A$70,000 mare in foal to California stallion Halladay and a $43,000 2-year-old daughter of California sire Clubhouse Ride topped their respective divisions of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association winter mixed sale Jan. 31. Held at Fairplex in Pomona, the sale ofered a variety of breeding stock, 2-year-olds, and yearlings.

Adrian Gonzalez’s Checkmate Toroughbreds sold the overall sale topper and top-priced mare, British-bred Poster Girl. Cedros Bloodstock purchased the graded stakes-placed daughter of Excellent Art— Accede, by British-bred Acclamation, for $70,000. Poster Girl, who fnished third in the 2018 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes (G3T), has a 2022 flly by More Tan Ready and was sold in foal to Halladay, who stands at John Harris’ Harris Farms. Checkmate was the top consignor to the sale, with nine selling for a total of $245,000. Te group included two high-selling California-bred 2-year-olds, a colt and a flly, by California stallion Sir

Prancealot. Trainer Jef Bonde bought the flly, who is out of the Candy Ride mare Candy Forest, for $40,000. Nick Hines bought the colt, out of the Havana Gold mare Nonna Gianna, for $33,000.

A total of 90 horses grossed $821,400 at the sale for an average of $9,127 and a median of $4,750.

TV HOST AND FORMER TRAINER HAS EYE FOR GOOD CAL-BREDS

Nick Hines, long familiar to fans for his racing analysis as “Te Sarge” on television, showed up as the leading buyer at the recent California Toroughbred Breeders Association winter mixed sale at Pomona.

It’s not surprising. Te former trainer and longtime TV host has been an independent bloodstock agent for more than a decade. He spends much of his time scouting Toroughbreds for his clients and attending sales through-

out the country. At the Jan. 31 auction, the budget-conscious Hines led the way with seven purchases totaling $132,000.

Discussing his change in career direction, he said he reluctantly stepped away from training in the fall of 2007, a year after getting married.

“I was at a crossroads,” Hines explained. “I had been offered a job with Southern Equine Stable to manage their horses. I had about 30 horses at the time, training a few for Harris Farms and also for Paul Girdner, an owner who played a big part in my career. I had married Michelle in 2006, and

we wanted to start a family. So basically we had a decision to make. It was tough.”

He worked with Southern Equine until the Michael Moreno-owned company made the decision to leave California in 2011. Hines managed a number of top horses for Southern Equine, including Salute the Sarge, a multiple graded stakes winner as a 2-year-old who placed in both the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and the Norfolk Stakes (G1) in 2007.

Te horse’s name was in reference to Hines, of course, who had become famous in racing circles for the perfect military salute he would give on his manic journey from the grandstand to the winner’s circle following a win by one of his horses.

Hines, a mountain of a man at 6-foot-5 and close to 300 pounds, created an indelible image for TVG viewers with his exuberant gestures to the crowd—waving his arms wildly and throwing kisses—followed by his salute. Te racing network certainly noticed, and his natural fair with the microphone led to a gig starting in 2005 as a racing analyst.

Hines grew up on a horse ranch his father, Michael, built near Las Vegas. His father, who raced horses in California, was an attorney and a member of the Nevada state racing commission who died in a riding accident in 1985. Nick decided to tap into the knowledge he had developed through a lifetime around horses, turning much of his attention to bloodstock.

owner Michael Nentwig. Rachael’s Ride, a chestnut flly by Clubhouse Ride—Slalom, by Bodemeister, was the top seller for 2-year-olds at the sale, bringing $43,000. Te others were Drumcondra, a dark bay or brown colt by Sir Prancealot—Nonna Gianna, by Havana Gold, and Evania, a chestnut flly by Om out of the graded stakes-placed Good Journey mare Kathleen Rose. Both sold for $33,000.

“I met Michael through a mutual friend,” Hines said. “He’s developed a winning formula while surrounding himself with the right people.”

Hines also bought a yearling chestnut colt, Art of Seduction, for 10s Racing for $8,500. Art of Seduction is from the frst crop of the sire Yorkton, a multiple graded stakes-winning son of Speightstown standing in Kentucky, and is the frst foal for his dam, Burnt Island, by Hardspun.

Te remaining three horses, all broodmares in foal, were purchased by Hines with plans to send them to new stallion Tizamagician, a multiple graded stakes winner of $741,851. Te Richard Mandella-trained Tizamagician, a 6-year-old son of Tiznow, was retired late last year by MyRacehorse and is standing at Milky Way Farm in Temecula Valley.

What does Hines look for in examining a young horse’s potential?

“Yearlings, for me, involve more pedigree research (especially when pinhooking), as it’s more of a crystal ball as opposed to the 2-year-olds,” he said. “As with most, I rely upon the intuitive while trying to get a feel for the yearlings while looking for proper balance and conformation with aptitude. But trying to project where they’ll be a year from then or two years is an art, and you’re more of a prognosticator.

“With the 2-year-olds in training sales,

it’s much like that of an NFL combine, where you have the beneft of clocking horses under tack and seeing how they respond and, in turn, react, which makes the process of fnding a good horse a bit easier in my opinion.”

Among his recent California-bred highlights, Hines noted, is multiple stakes winner El Tigre Terrible, a twotime Cal-bred champion as 2-year-old male in 2019 and 3-year-old male the following year. Hines purchased the son of Smiling Tiger for $18,000 as a yearling for Slam Dunk Racing at the 2018 Barretts October mixed sale. Hines also landed the multiple stakes-placed flly Taming the Tigress, a lifetime earner of $331,132, for $21,000 at the CTBA’s 2020 January mixed sale.

Hines, who earned a degree in agricultural business from Cal Poly Pomona University, lives in Palos Verde with Michelle and their 13-year-old son, Cash.

“We named him Cash so we’d never

be broke,” he joked.

In addition to his television work as a part-time host and analyst for FanDuel TV (formerly TVG), Hines, 52, is an equine acquisition advisor for the fast-growing MyRacehorse, the micro-share sales company specializing in the high-end horse market, as well as for Edge Racing, a more traditional partnership afliate of MyRacehorse. On top of that, he runs his own stable, Battle Born Racing, a general partnership he named for his home state of Nevada.

He started Battle Born Racing Stable in 2004. It currently owns a dozen Toroughbreds and a couple of broodmares. Hines reported that Battle Born has been most prominent racing at the Los Alamitos night meet, connecting on a win rate of 42% overall competing in both Toroughbred and mixed divisions.

Hines met Michael Behrens, the founder and CEO of MyRacehorse, in 2018. Te fedgling group was involved in discussions with B. Wayne Hughes and Spendthrift Farm on forging a partnership that would give small-time fans a chance to take part in the sport of horse racing at the highest levels through the sale of micro-shares.

“It was not easy—there were days that were tumultuous.” said Hines, who went to work for MyRacehorse concentrating on scouting horses and sales. “It really came down to seeing the process through, and in the end they got it done.

“MyRacehorse is now worldwide and has been tremendously successful. I think it’s important because it gets new blood into the game. I’ve always been about taking care of the little guy. Because if you do, eventually the little guy will become a big guy.”

BACK PAIN IN HORSES

CAUSES CAN ORIGINATE IN THE BACK OR START ELSEWHERE

Back injuries in horses come in many types, including acute and chronic problems as well as repetitive injuries due to the athletic activities. Any of these can hinder a horse’s ability to perform. Dr. Jenny Johnson of Oakhill Shockwave and Veterinary Chiropractic in Calabasas, Calif., says that proper diagnosis of the source of the back pain is essential in order for a successful treatment plan to be developed and implemented.

Back pain can be primary, originating in the back, or secondary, as a result of pain in another location in the body.

“Primary back pain can result from a variety of issues, including chiropractic abnormalities, kissing spines, or muscle strain or sprain, to name a few,” Johnson said. “Secondary back pain is frequently thought to be result of hock or stife pain. With secondary back pain, it is essential that the primary source of pain is identifed and treated as well as the back pain. Treating either without the other will not result in satisfactory resolution of the back pain. To be ef-

fective in our treatment, it is essential that we consider the horse as a whole, not just an accumulation of parts. Tis is especially true when addressing back pain.”

With advanced imaging modalities— such as MRI, nuclear scintigraphy, digital radiography, and ultrasound— practitioners are able to identify more clearly and much more specifcally the areas of lameness in horses.

“With these methods we can identify areas of pain in the back that are related to abnormalities,” Johnson said, “such as kissing spines, infammation of the

sacroiliac joint, and muscular pain, as well as identifying other sources of pain in the horse that may be contributing to back pain.”

Tere are a number of diferent ways to identify back pain.

“Some cases are obvious,” Johnson said. “One of the most common ways to check the back is via palpation. Owners, grooms, or trainers may report that the horse is sensitive when they brush the horse or put a saddle on. Palpation can help locate sore areas, when the horse finches or tries to resist the touch in that area. Back pain may present as a performance issue: Te horse may not push from behind the way it used to or doesn’t perform as well as before.”

Kissing spines are now more identifable with today’s imaging modalities.

“We can use a combination of digital radiography and scintigraphy to evaluate the back to see if kissing spines are present and if they are potentially active,” Johnson said. “Tere are some horses with kissing spines that have no pain. Te range of how it afects horses is quite dramatic—from nothing at all to making the horse dangerous to ride, and everything in between—and sometimes in the same horse.”

Identifying the pain, addressing other components of the horse’s comfort, such as hind limb issues, as well as identifying any underlying cause to the back pain, is crucial.

“We have to look at the entire animal,” Johnson said. “It’s not only important to watch the horse on a lead shank and a longe line, but also under saddle. Frequently, you won’t be able to clearly see what the problem is until the horse is doing what he’s supposed to be doing for his job.”

TREATING BACK PAIN

“As a veterinarian working on lameness for 20 years before I started doing chiropractic work, I shifted more toward a management/maintenance role in keeping equine athletes at their peak level of performance, which means helping them achieve comfort,” said Johnson.

“As traditionally trained veterinarians, if we have a lameness in the left

hind leg, that’s where we are trained to look for problems. With my further training in chiropractic, I am now able to evaluate a much larger picture of the horse and the issues he may be facing, and this gives me the ability to make a more complete assessment of the horse. Now, if I examine a horse that is lame in the left hind leg, I am looking at the whole horse. It is amazing how many lameness issues in the horse are related to chiropractic issues, and how many issues in the horse I can fx, or at least improve substantially with just my hands.”

Te back plays an important role in many soundness issues.

“Te bony spinal column houses the spinal cord, which is an integral part of the nervous system—which controls everything, including support of the musculoskeletal system,” Johnson said. “If the skeletal system is not supported properly by muscles and tendons that go over those joints, there will be instability in those joints. Te functioning of the muscles and tendons that go over the joints is controlled by the nervous system. If they are not fred properly by the nervous system, then these muscles and tendons cannot properly support the joints.

“Chiropractic care is aimed at optimizing the function of the nervous system. If the nervous system functions

properly, then the muscles are fred properly and the tendons and muscles that go over joints are properly supporting the joints.

“If joints are not supported properly, there is joint instability, which leads to more joint injections, as well as wear and tear due to repetitive strain. If a joint is stable, the horse stays more comfortable. Chiropractic care can play a role in this.”

Treatments for back pain obviously will vary with the cause.

“If the horse has kissing spines, treatment will vary with the severity of the pain and severity of the lesions,” Johnson said. “Te horse may be successfully managed with chiropractic care and acupuncture. In other cases, shockwave therapy may be helpful, and in some cases, injecting between the dorsal spinous processes (the ‘kissing spines’) may be useful.”

If the problem originates in the sacroiliac joint, treatment modalities such as chiropractic care, acupuncture, massage, shockwave therapy, injection, or a combination may be used to treat the condition.

“I can’t stress enough how important it is that we look at the whole picture,” Johnson said. “While it is tempting to try and isolate a problem to one area, this is rarely the case. Pain or injury in

one area of the body will have ramifcations on other parts of the horse’s body.

“Tink about human injuries. If a person has an awkward gait, favoring a foot or leg for some reason, this puts the entire spine of balance and causes that person to compensate in other areas. Tis not only potentially leads to back pain, but also creates pain in other joints because you are stressing them abnormally.”

CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT

“When I see a horse chiropractically, some people ask if I can just check the horse quickly,” Johnson said. “Since chiropractic involves evaluation of the animal as a whole, I cannot do a quick check. I evaluate the entire horse, with rare exception. Te goal with chiropractic care is to optimize health, and we do that by infuencing the nervous system—which controls everything in the body.”

She often gets calls to look at a horse initially because it has back pain that the owners can’t resolve with traditional modalities.

“When I evaluate that horse, I watch it move,” she explained. “At a minimum I watch it travel on a lead shank, walking away from me and toward me, trotting away from me and toward me—on a straight line. I also watch the horse on a serpentine walk, and evaluate whether it has a diagonal walk the way it should (opposite hind and fore are moving together) or a lateral walk (hind and front on the same side moving together). A lateral walk is a fnding that may, in the presence of several other signs, be an indication of sacroiliac pain.

“Sometimes I watch horses on the longe line, depending on the horse, and sometimes I watch them under saddle, because I want to see how they move with a rider. Basically, I am looking for symmetry in the way the horse moves, and foot fight path: Are the feet swinging in, swinging out, or tracking straight? Does the movement appear fuid or choppy. Is the horse holding the tail to one side or the other? Is the hind end symmetrical or does one side of the rump drop lower than the other at the trot?

“When I begin working on the horse, I start at the head and evaluate muscles of the jaw, the TMJ (temporomandibular) joint, lines of the skull, and check for what are called cranial faults in chiropractic terminology. Tis gives me a chance to get to know the horse and the horse to know me, and horses typical-

Tere is a normal range of motion for each of those vertebral joints, and if it doesn’t move properly, I identify which way it’s not moving and then re-establish that motion with an adjustment. Once I have fnished my evaluation and adjustments on the vertebral column, then I evaluate the range of motion of each joint in each leg.

“Ten I go to the back end of the horse and work my way forward. I check for back pain with palpation, and then evaluate each joint—in the pelvis and the vertebral column. I evaluate for

She fnds a lot of restrictions in the pelvis and in the mid-lumbar area at L2, L3, L4, and L5 (the lower back).

“Tis is where the horse has to fex, and where all the energy engagement has to come through, from the hindquarters. I often fnd a horse that is not necessarily painful when you push on

that area, but could be sensitive when a person is brushing the back or just a little cranky. I’ll fnd that they are very restricted in certain vertebrae. When I make adjustments, a lot of times they achieve fairly immediate relief. Some people tell me they have a totally diferent horse the next day.”

SHOCKWAVE TREATMENT

Shockwave treatment can also help horses with back pain.

“Because I spend so much time with my hands on the horse doing chiropractic care, I know these horses’ backs intimately,” Johnson said. “I am feeling every vertebral joint and evaluating the motion— side to side and up and down—and their legs. Because of this, I can frequently identify areas that are consistently sore, particularly sore muscles.

“When I fnd a horse that is sore in the back, depending on the circumstances, and if the horse doesn’t have a competition (a race or athletic event) in just a few days, I usually do an adjustment. If the horse is really sore or locked up, I come back in a week or two and do another adjustment after the initial evaluation. I may do this two to three times at two-week intervals to see how the horse responds.

“Often the back pain will resolve. But if I come back the second or third time and the horse still has just as much back pain and the other issues have been addressed, I often shockwave

the back. Sometimes I do it right away, especially if the horse is so sore that I can’t do the adjustment because he is so uncomfortable. In that situation I usually shockwave them right before I adjust them, and this will provide enough relief—even immediately—that I can then do the adjustments.

“Sometimes I shockwave and adjust, then come back two weeks later for another adjustment. Te shockwave therapy can be an integral part of this treatment because I can address the pain quickly and efectively with shock-

wave. I don’t always use it right away. It depends on the pain and severity, and how much tension the horse is carrying, and what the horse has to do in its job.”

Te key thing to know about back pain is that it may or may not be just back pain.

“Horses do so much for us that I think it is our responsibility to make sure they are comfortable doing it,” Johnson said. “Tey are unbelievably generous to us. It is our responsibility to take of them.”
