CAL-BRED PROGRAM FUELS BREEDERS’ INVESTMENTS

In early October, Te Jockey Club released the most recent breeding statistics detailing the number of mares bred in 2021 and the estimated 2022 live foals from mares covered in the various states. According to TJC, approximately 85-90% of live foal reports are complete. Among the 10 states and provinces listed, only four, including California, produced more live foals this year than in the previous year (see chart below).

Tis listing of live foals pertains strictly to the state of conception and does not represent the total number of foals born in a particular state. For California, the percentage of live foals produced by California-based stallions increased 4% in 2022 compared to 2021. Several oth-

er regional racing states showed a signifcant decrease in foal production.

Also, when factoring in the 200-plus California foals conceived in Kentucky and elsewhere, the current-year live foal crop should exceed 1,500.

In regard to Kentucky-sired California-breds, this trend continues to remain stable each year as California breeders continue to upgrade and bring quality bloodstock to the state. Tis bodes well for the future of racing and sales in the state.

Te total Cal-bred program, at more than $35 million a year in restricted purses and incentive awards, has fueled this investment by California breeders.

As California-breds continue to make up roughly half of the feld sizes

north and south, and California racing becomes more and more dependent on locally bred horses, these positive trends are vital for the future of racing in the state, as ample inventory should be available with a higher percentage of the horses being bred making it to the races. It is also important to note that, unlike other racing states, we are realizing these positive results even without revenue from other forms of gambling. Restricted purses and incentives continue to remain strong strictly through the pari-mutuel handle.

Trough the continued cooperation within the industry to provide lucrative purses and incentive awards for breeders and owners, there should be more positives to report in the future.

CONNIE SWINGLE WINS THIRD TIME DOWN SANTA ANITA’S HILL

California-bred Connie Swingle won for the third time in as many tries down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course when she scored in the $85,000 Unzip Me Stakes Oct 1. Te listed stakes is named for Unzip Me, the champion Cal-bred older female of 2010.

Ridden by Kyle Frey, Connie Swingle held of a fast-fnishing Pammy’s Ready by a neck. Sent away as the 13-10 favorite, Connie Swingle, despite slightly stumbling at the start, stopped the timer in 1:11.87 for the about 61⁄2 furlongs. She has also won in her two previous races over that course and distance.

Phil D’Amato trains Connie Swingle for owner/breeder Nick Alexander. A 3-year-old daughter of Grazen—Sky Marni, by Sky Mesa, Connie Swingle won the 2021 Generous Portion Stakes and has placed in two other stakes. She is a full sister to graded stakes winner S Y Sky and stakes winner Grazen Sky.

A Man’s Man Wins Bull Dog Stakes

Making his frst lifetime start in a stakes, California-bred A Man’s Man captured the $76,800 Bull Dog Stakes at the Big Fresno Fair Oct. 16. It was his sixth consecutive victory, following being claimed for $8,000.

Leading at every call of the 11 8-mile race under jockey Assael Espinoza, A Man’s Man defeated fellow Cal-bred Coalinga Road by 11⁄4 lengths, with Kentucky-bred I’mgonnabesomebody third. Trainer Jack Steiner claimed A Man’s Man for himself and Howard and Dee Hammer’s Remmah Racing at Golden Gate Fields May 22. Since then, A Man’s Man has won three races at Golden Gate, one at Pleasanton, and one at Sacramento going into the Bull Dog.

Richard Barton Enterprises bred A Man’s Man, a 6-year-old gelded son of Mucho Macho Man—Longing, by City Zip. A Man’s Man raised his total earnings to $224,866.

LAVA MAN TO OLD FRIENDS

Racing fans who attend the Breeders’ Cup World Championships will get to see more than history made by active runners Nov. 4-5 at Keeneland. Tey’ll also witness the fnal chapter of Hall of Famer and California-bred Lava Man’s second career as a stable pony for Team O’Neill, as the 22-year-old grade 1 winner is headed for pasture at Old Friends Toroughbred Retirement Farm near Georgetown, Ky.

Trainer Doug O’Neill announced the news Oct. 19 via social media, sharing that Lava Man will take Hot Rod Charlie to the gate for the Nov. 5 Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) in his fnal assignment before joining the roster at Old Friends.

“It is with great excitement and sadness that (we announce) Lava Man will make his fnal coaching duties chaperoning Hot Rod Charlie to the gate in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland,” O’Neill’s statement read in part.

Retired from racing at the end of 2009 after 47 starts with a 17-8-5 record and earnings of $5,268,706, Lava Man became a key member of Team O’Neill and was soon nicknamed “Te Coach” for his role in helping teach young racehorses the ropes. He is also quite the road warrior, having shipped across

the country with multiple contenders to their various assignments from O’Neill’s Southern California base.

“We would like to give a special ‘Tank You’ to these special and important people in Lava Man’ s life,” O’Neill’s statement continued, “Dave and Steve Kenly (and) Jason Wood, his longtime owners. In addition, Noe Garcia (his longtime groom), Antonio Romero (his longtime exercise rider), Sabas Rivera (his two-legged brother), Jimmy Jimenez (longtime shoer), and our right-hand man, Leandro Mora. . . .

“At Team O’Neill we are extremely grateful for the 18 years we had to race and work alongside Lava Man. He can never be replaced, and we will never look to replace him. Farewell, Lava Man. We Love You.”

Old Friends founder Michael Blowen said patience paid of in the case of Lava Man, who was already a living legend when he retired from racing.

“When he retired from running, I got a call from Jason Wood asking me if I would like to have Lava Man at Old Friends, and I said, ‘Of course!’ Back then we didn’t have Silver Charm out here; we didn’t have any superstars like him,” Blowen recalled. “Ten we were told he was going to stay and become a stable pony, and I was very disappointed. But it seems to have worked out good for everybody. He became the greatest stable pony in the history of the world.”

Lava Man

Lava Man, a son of Slew City Slew, was bred in California by Lonnie Arterburn and Eve and Kim Kuhlmann out of the Nostalgia’s Star mare Li’l Ms. Leonard. He was claimed by the Kenlys and Wood for $50,000 in 2004 and went on to win seven grade 1 events, earning more money than any other claimer in history. He took the Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) three times from 2005-07 and captured the Santa Anita Handicap (G1) in 2006-07. He also won the Charles Whittingham

Memorial Handicap (G1T) and Pacifc Classic Stakes (G1) in 2006. Lava Man was voted Cal-bred Horse of the Year in 2005-06.

“Lava Man is a horse that represents why people love horse racing,” Blowen said. “If more people were exposed to a horse like Lava Man, people would be falling all over themselves to get into horse racing. He raced every race, he fought every fght. Everything he’s ever done has been spectacular, even as a pony. People would come to Doug’s barn all the time to see him. He’s a superstar.”

Howard Zucker

Howard Zucker, who trained California-bred champion Moscow Changes, died Oct. 20, several days after undergoing open heart surgery. He was 74.

A popular trainer on the Southern California circuit since 1983, Zucker helped many people and horses throughout his career. He was active in Thoroughbred aftercare, serving as a longtime board member of CARMA and a former president of the organization. Zucker also served on the board of California Thoroughbred Trainers and helped such other organizations as the Edwin J. Gregson Foundation.

Zucker began his career in New York and New Jersey. During his career, he saddled 246 winners for total purse earnings of nearly $9.5 million.

For John Harris’ Harris Farms, Zucker trained Moscow Changes, a 1990 daughter of Moscow Ballet—Thaliard’s Pearl, by Thaliard. Moscow Changes won the 1992 Desert Wine Sales Stakes and 1993 John Peri Handicap, earning a total of $292,542. She was voted champion Cal-bred 2-year-old female in 1992.

Other stakes winners Zucker trained include Crafty C. T., Madame Pietra, and Well Monied.

“He touched so many lives on the backstretch and was always involved,” said Mary Forney, retired executive director of the Thoroughbred Owners of California. “He really cared about the horses and people. Everybody loved talking to him. He was involved with aftercare, and all of his horses were so well taken care of.”

John Martin

communicate our clientele

Cole Ranch restricts the number of horses to 50 or about one horse per acre of farm land. By restricting the number of horses, we are better able to provide superior care for your horses. It also allows us to more effectively communicate with our clientele.

Do you ship your yearlings to other facilities to be broken?

Cole Ranch has a very experienced training staff and all the facilities needed to train young horse, including a 5/8 mile track with rails and a four horse starting gate. Over the past 18 years we have successfully trained hundreds of horses for the racetrack.

Northern California trainer John F. “Mickey” Martin died at age of 63 after a lengthy illness. Martin, who saddled his frst starter in 1984, trained Quarter Horses early in his career. From 7,707 Thoroughbred starters, Martin won 1,960 races and amassed purse earnings of $23,835,366. He mentored numerous horsemen who have gone on to achieve success, including Jonathan Wong and Reid France.

“John was just a great guy,” said owner Troy Onorato, a longtime client and friend of Martin’s who runs Hat Trick Racing Stable. “He helped and mentored so many people throughout his life and never sought attention for helping people. He was focused and dedicated on taking care of his horses, but always tried to do the right thing.”

Martin’s best and favorite horse to train was Mended, a flly he claimed for $12,500 in 2017 at Golden Gate. She went on to win 10 consecutive times, including the Claiming Crown Glass Slipper at Gulfstream Park that same year.

Among other horses Martin trained through all or part of their careers were California-breds Powers Lilsis, Princess Ashlyn, and Vaca City Flyer.

Memoriam (CONT.)

Duane Offield

Longtime Northern California trainer Duane Offeld died Sept. 29 after a lengthy illness. He was 82.

Offeld began his training career in 1976. He saddled 721 winners from 8,038 starters, with lifetime purse earnings of $10,009,202. His most signifcant win came in the 1990 Haskell Stakes (G1) at Monmouth Park with Restless Con. Other horses Offeld trained include California-bred stakes winners Filomena Galea and Tense Wager.

Owner Rozamund Barclay, who employed Offeld to train a large portion of her horses since 2014, called Duane “a wonderful man.”

“His horses and his people that worked for him were everything,” said Barclay. “He took care of his barn help and horses like his family. Duane always felt that it was a privilege to make a living doing what he loved.”

Budroyale

Budroyale, the 1999 California-bred Horse of the Year, died recently at age 29. A full brother to two-time Cal-bred Horse of the Year and 2000 national Horse of the Year Tiznow, Budroyale won 17 of 52 races, competing from 1995-2001, and he earned $2,840,810.

The Cecilia Straub Revocable Trust bred Budroyale, a son of Cee’s Tizzy—Cee’s Song, by Seattle Song. Jeffrey Sengara claimed Bud royale for $50,000 at Santa Anita in February 1998, and the gelding started in most of his stakes for Sengara. Budroyale’s victo ries include the 1998 San Bernardino Handicap (G2) and Wells Fargo Bank California Cup Classic; 1999 Goodwood Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2), Mervyn LeRoy Handicap (G2) and Longacres Mile Handicap (G3); and 2000 San Antonio Handicap (G2).

In addition to his Horse of the Year title, Budroyale was voted that season’s champion Calbred older male.

Sengara retired Budroyale after the 2001 season, and the gelding spent most of that retirement at a farm in Langley, British Columbia.

“He handled his retirement like a champion,” Sengara told Daily Racing Form. “He was like a bond for my family. He gave us so much more than the victories.”

THIS MONTH IN HISTORY

After a successful foray to Northern California to win the Wine Country Debutante Stakes at Santa Rosa, UNUSUAL WAY captured her second consecutive stakes in the $99,500 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filly Sprint Preview Stakes. A seven-furlong listed stakes at Santa Anita Nov. 3, 2012, the race attracted a feld of fve. Unusual Way, ridden by Ramon Dominguez, blasted out of the gate on top and never looked back, scoring by 31⁄2 lengths over Switch to the Lead and stopping the timer in 1:23.50. Jeff Bonde trained Unusual Way for owners Rusty Brown and Phil Lebherz. Tom Bachman bred Unusual Way, a California-bred daughter of Unusual Heat—Way Up, by Great Above. The flly went on to earn a total of $716,115, winning two more stakes and placing in eight others, including a second in the 2013 San Clemente Handicap (G2T).

When SUPERCILIOUS captured the $100,000 Cat’s Cradle Handicap at Hollywood Park Nov. 30, 1997, she was winning a race restricted to California-breds, but one as tough as many open races. The feld of eight included six stakes winners, with Supercilious sent away as the 17-10 favorite.

Fun in Excess jumped out to the early lead, while Supercilious and jockey Brice Blanc trailed the feld for the frst quarter-mile. When Blanc asked Supercilious to come running, however, she responded gamely, running down rivals from the far outside to defeat Fleeting Image by a length. Supercilious clocked the 71

furlongs over a sloppy track in 1:28.49. Richard Mandella trained the 4-year-old daughter of Skywalker—Table Frolic, by Never Tabled, for owner/ breeder Herman Sarkowsky. A graded stakes winner the previous year, Supercilious eventually won eight stakes, including the 1998 Cat’s Cradle.

California-bred FAST FELLOW needed to live up to his name to defeat King of Cricket, another talented Cal-bred, in the Paso Robles Handicap at Bay Meadows Nov. 18, 1972. The track came up muddy for the six-furlong stakes. With John Sellers in the irons, Fast Fellow took command midway down the backstretch and was able to hold off King of Cricket by a half-length in 1:091⁄5. Earl Mitchell trained Fast Fellow, a 4-year-old son of Imbros—Gay Tune, by Mr. Music. Mitchell had claimed Gay Tune for $12,000 for his sister and brother-in-law, Harry and Velma Morrison, who bred Fast Fellow. Following Harry Morrison’s death in 1971, his wife continued to race horses in the name of Gem State Stable. The Paso Robles was Fast Fellow’s eighth stakes victory, and he earned a career total of $360,818.

Goldstein Honored at Inaugural Women’s Summit

Jane Goldstein, a longtime California Toroughbred Foundation trustee, the retired director of publicity at Santa Anita, and the frst woman to head a track publicity department in this country, received a standing ovation when honored during the luncheon of the inaugural Horse Racing Women’s Summit at Santa Anita Sept. 29. Fellow Foundation trustee Amy Zimmerman, one of the many Goldstein has mentored throughout her career, presented the award.

Te summit, designed to provide women in racing with ways to “engage, innovate, and invest,” ofered a day of panels comprising female executives throughout the racing industry. Summit organizers recognized Goldstein as “a groundbreaking leader and inspirational example to women in racing.”

Zimmerman noted the barriers Goldstein had to face during her career simply because she was a woman, from the Daily Racing Form not hiring women at the time to press boxes being closed to women. Once in charge of publicity at Santa Anita, Goldstein “expected excellence from those who worked for her because she demanded it of herself because of how hard she worked to get here,” Zimmerman said.

Goldstein has brought her expertise and experience in the racing industry to her service on the Foundation board. Her hard work and dedication have added immeasurably to the Foundation’s work. Her fellow trustees salute Goldstein for her outstanding career and the Women’s Summit for choosing to honor her.

A Blast From the Past

Warrior Racetrack

Racing superstars frequently fame brightly and burn out quickly, heading to stud just as fans begin to know them. But for those that stick around year after year, the embers build over time, often making those durable warriors much more popular.

California has produced a plethora of these fan favorites. Best Pal and Lava Man had large followings, and deservedly so. Te history of the durable California-bred harks back over decades.

Sledge is one Cal-bred who might have

had plenty of online followers had social media been around in his day. Instead, he built his fan base the old-fashioned way, wowing large on-track Southern California crowds.

Tey had plenty of opportunity to witness Sledge’s prowess. Te 1959 gelding retired in 1968 after 91 starts. He won 29 of them—13 of them stakes—with 15 seconds and 15 thirds, for earnings of $326,384, not a bad chunk of change in the 1960s.

No one loved him more than the woman who owned him for most of his life. Maxine Nazworthy, daughter of Sidney Factor and granddaughter of Max Factor, the founder of the renowned makeup

company, owned Sledge during the latter part of his racing career. She made the decision to retire the gelding in 1968 to Walnut Wood Farm in Hemet.

Maxine’s husband, Jim Nazworthy, trained Sledge for the latter part of his career. Nazworthy trainees included major winner Viking Spirit, the nemesis of Calbred millionaire Native Diver, as well as Mr. Consistency, who won both the Santa Anita Handicap and San Juan Capistrano Handicap in 1964.

Maxine thought so much of Sledge that she later ran her horses in the name of Sledge Stable. For example, Atomic Wings, bred in California by Maxine and trained by Jim, ran in the name of Sledge Stable

WITH HIS NEVER-SAY-DIE STYLE, SLEDGE ENDEARED HIMSELF IN THE HEARTS OF RACING FANS

and won the 1969 Del Mar Debutante.

Sledge might have made it to 100 starts had Maxine not retired him. Tough he was sound, he was racing on a right knee that had pins in it from an old injury, and she just didn’t want to take the chance of him sufering another injury.

“He likes being a racehorse,” Maxine told Giles Wright of this magazine in 1969. “And just as a person who likes a job will do it better than others, so did Sledge expend his full efort every time he raced. But Sledge’s tendons, bones, and blood vessels are getting old, even if his heart is still youthful and competitive as ever, and it was getting too much for my nerves.”

It must have been the right call because Sledge lived until the age of 27. Maxine even rode him occasionally.

“I’ve always liked horses, but Sledge increased my fondness for them manyfold,” she said. “I learned to ride as a child in Palm Springs, but I never got to be real good. I get on Sledge, but only when Jim is there, for, after all, Sledge still is a racehorse.”

Tat Maxine ended up with Sledge at all is one of those very fortunate circuitous routes.

Maxine’s father owned horses and in 1962 purchased a yearling in Kentucky for $21,000 after getting outbid on several horses at the California Toroughbred Breeders Association Del Mar sale. He and

his wife, Dorothy, had dinner with Sherrill and Dorothy Corwin, and Sherrill said he would like to get into racing.

Sidney sold Sherrill 20% of the yearling, and they decided to run as Dee Dee Stable because both of their wives were named Dorothy. To pay the bills on the yearling until he reached the races, they decided to buy a horse in training.

W.A. (Bill) Reavis trained for Dee Dee Stable and heard that Sledge was available

at Pleasanton for $12,500. Bred by Covert Ranch, Sledge was a son of Anyoldtime— Action Now, by Cover Up. Standing 16.3 hands, he had a long back that “almost flled the stall of a starting gate,” wrote Wright. Yet he managed to get out of the gate so quickly that he eventually established himself as an outstanding sprinter who could also route.

Sledge made his frst start Sept. 13, 1962, running second in a $4,000 maiden

race. He broke his maiden in his third start for a $5,000 claiming price and then rose to $7,000 claiming and won again, the last time he ran in claiming events.

Reavis described Sledge as “a long, lean bag of bones. You could count every rib at a hundred yards and hang a hat on either one of his hips.” Nevertheless, Reavis liked Sledge and bought him for Factor and Corwin. Sledge would go on to more than pay the bills on that unmemorable yearling.

First, however, Reavis had to iron out a few character faws.

“When I got him, he was a bully,” the trainer said, “fractious at the gate, always on his hind legs, and breaking badly as a result. I schooled him for eight straight days, and he settled down. As his manners improved, so did his ability as a runner.”

In his frst few races for Dee Dee Stable, Sledge won three allowance events at Santa Anita. He began to demonstrate his true potential in the 1963 Hollywood Express Stakes over 51⁄2 furlongs at Hollywood Park. Sledge battled the good stakes horse Winonly, hero of the race the previous year, to prevail narrowly.

Maxine witnessed Sledge’s victory in that year’s Bing Crosby Handicap at Del Mar. Te Cal-bred defeated Testum by a half-length in 1:083⁄5 for six furlongs, with Cal-bred Gallant Host, a son of My Host, third.

Wright, in recapping Sledge’s racing career for this magazine, called 1964 the gelding’s “best year,” pointing out that Sledge won 11 of 22 starts, including six stakes.

“Tere were many horsemen who considered him to be the best sprinter of 1964,” wrote Wright.

Evidence came in the form of the Oct. 31 SNARO Handicap at Sportsman’s Park in the Chicago area. Sledge had to carry 129 pounds, and when he won, he broke the track record, his time of 1:1535 shaving four-ffths of the old mark for 61 2 furlongs.

At the same track at week later, in the Jack R. Johnston Memorial Handicap, he carried a staggering 133 pounds, the most ever assigned at Sportsman’s to that time.

Breaking from post 12 for a mile race on a bullring, Sledge won and set another track record, 1:37 for a mile.

“He’s about as game as anything I’ve ridden,” said jockey Rudy Campas after that race.

Sledge also won a second Hollywood Express that year, his time of 1:02 3⁄5 “only a tick of the world record,” wrote Wright.

Sidney became the sole owner of Dee Dee Stable in 1964, and on Maxine’s birthday that year, he told his daughter he would give her Sledge when the gelding retired.

“But I wound up getting him earlier than that, during the 1967 Pomona meeting,” Maxine later recalled.

Sledge was born in the same year as Native Diver, another Cal-bred with devastating speed. Native Diver could carry his speed farther, as evidenced by his three Hollywood Gold Cups, and the two rarely met.

Native Diver had a series of battles with Viking Spirt, a Kentucky-bred foaled in 1960. For Nazworthy, Viking Spirit won the 1964 Del Mar Handicap and 1965 Bing Crosby. Sledge defeated Viking Spirit at level weights in a division of the 1965 Sierra Madre Handicap on the turf.

Two must have been a lucky number for Sledge as he won the Premiere Handicap over Mustard Plaster at Hollywood Park, above, and the Sierra Madre Handicap at Santa Anita as well where owner Maxine Factor accepts the winner’s trophy

Sledge went to New York to take on the best sprinters there, but in his second start he injured himself, seriously as it turned out.

“We don’t know what happened, but his right knee was broken so badly it was in eight pieces,” Maxine said. “In an operation that lasted a long time, Dr. William Reed removed some of the smaller chips and then used two screw-like pins to put the others back together.”

Back then, operations using screws and pins to repair a horse’s joints were in their infancy. Wright in his article for this magazine said that these operations “had had limited success before, but never to the extent of Sledge.”

Jim Nazworthy was training the Factor horses by the time Sledge returned to training, and the trainer did a terrifc job not only bringing Sledge back to the races, but winning several stakes with him.

In the fnal days of 1965, Sledge returned to face Native Diver and Isle of Greece in the Palos Verdes Handicap and ran third to them. At Hollywood Park the following spring he beat Chi-

clero by a nose in the Premiere Handicap. Sledge’s stakes-placings that season included a second to Native Diver in the Inglewood Handicap.

Nazworthy tackled the Longacres Mile in Washington with Viking Spirit and Sledge. Te trainer won the popular Northwest race in 1964 with Viking Spirit, who equaled the Longacres track record. Sledge fnished second in the 1966 Longacres Mile to Aurelius II, trained by Mel Stute, whose noteworthy Cal-breds would later include champion Snow Chief.

Following the Longacres Mile, most of Sledge’s accomplishments occurred at Pomona. At 7, he won the C. B. Aferbaugh Memorial Handicap there, and at 9 in 1968 he won the Governor’s Cup Handicap on the bullring.

Wright noted that Sledge earned more than $100,000 following the injury and operation, and he attributed much of the credit to Nazworthy’s handling of the gelding.

After Maxine retired Sledge, he enjoyed a long and happy retirement. He even made a few new fans. Mary Fleming Simon, who

wrote for this magazine in the late 1970s and early 1980s, would visit him in retirement because she remembered seeing him race when she was growing up.

“I used to go back and visit Sledge and another gelding named Switchback whenever I could get my dad to drop me of,” said Simon recently, noting that Switchback, also a Cal-bred, won 28 of 155 starts. “I always brought apples or carrots, which of course they loved. I was drawn to them both because they were racetrack warriors who’d once had a touch of class, who turned up in the entries all the time, and who I’d read about from time to time in our local paper.”

Sledge lived to 27, when age caught up to him. He was euthanized May 27, 1986, having spent his entire retirement at Walnut Wood Farm and long outliving Jim Nazworthy, who died in 1974.

Maxine Nazworthy, who died in 2020, went on to breed and race many other good horses, but none captured her heart like Sledge did.

“Tere is something special about him, you know,” she said.

Golden State Series—California Distaf Handicap

Switching back to Cal-bred competition didn’t make things easy. Phil D’Amato, who saddled three of the distafers who beat Eddie’s New Dream in the Mabee, had Leggs Galore for owner/breeder Jack Sims and Rose Dawson for owner/breeder Nick Alexander.

Leggs Galore and another Alexander homebred, Alice Marble, had defeated Eddie’s New Dream in the $153,500 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint Stakes Presented by John Deere Jan. 15. On that same card, Rose Dawson won the $202,000 Leigh Ann Howard California Cup Oaks.

HILLSIDE HEROINE

Te other two in the California Distaf feld were also formidable. Kleen Karma was making her stakes debut, but the hard-knocking 5-year-old had earned more than $200,000 in allowance and claiming company. Harper’s Gallop’s earnings were approaching $200,000, and in 2021 she had run third in the Tranquility Lake Stakes against open company.

“Te nice thing about this flly is she gives 120% every time I run her,” Cecil said.

Eddie’s New Dream doesn’t compete on Santa Anita’s downhill turf course very often, but when she does, watch out. Te 4-year-old California-bred flly has attempted the about 6 1⁄2 furlongs three times—running third in her frst try, becoming the only horse ever to beat Becca Taylor in her second try, and catching the devastatingly talented front-runner Leggs Galore in her third try, the $100,000 California Distaf Handicap Oct. 15.

When she isn’t battling Calbreds, Eddie’s New Dream has been tackling graded stakes runners around two turns, on both dirt and turf. Her fve graded

attempts have yielded a second in the Wilshire Stakes (G2T) and a fourth in the La Brea Stakes (G1). Most recently, the daughter of Square Eddie—Walking onadream, by Tapit, ran sixth in a wide trip at 1 1 8 miles on turf in the John C. Mabee Stakes (G2T) at Del Mar, behind such top runners as Avenue de France, Going Global, and Going to Vegas.

“I think she was a little unlucky last time,” said Ben Cecil, who trains Eddie’s New Dream for Paul and Zillah Reddam’s Reddam Racing.

Eddie’s New Dream was going to need every bit of that efort because Leggs Galore gets out on the lead and often runs away from her competition. She has won six stakes, including the 2022 Buena Vista Stakes (G2T).

Te 2-5 favorite, Leggs Galore tried her front-running tactics again, getting a pretty easy lead and touring the frst quarter-mile in :22.71 and a half-mile in :44.87. Jockey Mario Gutierrez kept second-choice Eddie’s New Dream in second, never letting his mount get out of touch with the leader.

Crossing the dirt and into the stretch, Leggs Galore looked like she would sail home on top. But Eddie’s New Dream closed the gap relentlessly, winning by a half-length in 1:13.11. It was 61 2 lengths back to the others, a nose and a head separating Kleen Karma, Rose Dawson, and Harper’s Gallop.

“She’s so tough and consistent,” said Cecil. “Hopefully, she’ll race on another year next year. We couldn’t ask for much more than she’s given us.”

Golden State Series—Harris Farms Stakes

A WINNING PSYCHOLOGY

VETERAN PSYCHO DAR TAKES FIRST STAKES VICTORY

It’s taken him nine tries, but the veteran campaigner Psycho Dar fnally earned his frst stakes victory, rolling to a three-length tally in the $75,000 Harris Farms Stakes at the Fresno County Fair Oct. 8.

Mary Tucker’s rejuvenated 7-year-old gelded son of Storm Wolf topped a feld of six Golden State Series-eligible contestants, completing the six-furlong dirt test in a sharp 1:09.33. Psycho Dar was ridden to victory by Armando Ayuso for trainer Samuel Calvario.

Racing on the Southern California circuit for most of his career, Psycho Dar had fve prior stakes placings since 2018, but had tailed of last year and dropped into the claiming ranks. Te gray was grinding through an eight-race losing streak when Calvario claimed him for $25,000 of trainer Eddie Truman out of a Golden Gate Fields sprint last December.

Since then Psycho Dar has ripped of four wins and two thirds in eight starts for his newest connections, earning $135,190.

“It’s a tribute to Samuel—I give him all the credit,” said the 87-year-old Tucker. “When he gets these horses, they often seem a little thin. We’ve talked about it. He gets them ft, he fnds the right exercise rider, and (the horses) reach their peak for him. He has a good rapport with them.”

Tucker, who has lived on the same three-acre ranch in Gilroy for the past 48 years, said she has been involved in limited horse ownership since the early 1970s with her late husband, Donald. He died in late April, a couple of days before their Ultimate Bango captured the Lost in the Fog Stakes at Golden Gate Fields. It was the Tuckers’ frst stakes win since Catra-

geous took the Wine Country Stakes at Santa Rosa in 2013.

Calvario was an assistant to Armando Lage for 22 years. He took over Lage’s stable after the popular trainer died of a heart attack in January 2017. Calvario also trains Ultimate Bango for Tucker, providing him with his frst career stakes win in the Lost in the Fog.

Te trainer said he had his eye on Psycho Dar for a while before claiming him for $25,000. He took a chance running him back in an optional allowance/claiming race for a $25,000 tag, but the horse went unclaimed. After Psycho Dar easily won that race, he has remained in allowance or stakes company.

“Tis horse was galloping good, and I decided to run him in a couple of stakes, see what happens,” Calvario said. After a

pair of thirds in the El Dorado Shooter and Albany stakes at Golden Gate, Psycho Dar had his breakthrough in the Harris Farms event.

Breaking from the rail, 10-1 shot Psycho Dar pushed the odds-on favorite, the pacesetting Harris Farms-owned Fashionably Fast. Tey dueled to the turn through opening fractions of :23.29 and :45.34, Psycho Dar taking a one-length advantage at the quarter pole. He maintained a clear edge into the stretch and pulled away late from the runner-up, Top Harbor. Ultimate Bango fnished third, and Fashionably Fast faded to ffth.

Over six seasons of racing, Psycho Dar has a 10-5-9 record in 38 starts and earnings of $446,266. Bred in California by Liberty Road Stables, he is out of the Maria’s Mon mare Stormin Mon.

STORMY HULL

Stormy Hull is not one to rest on his laurels.

CALIFORNIA FOCUS FOR WASHINGTONBASED BREEDER

After the eastern Washington breeder sold a pair of eye-catching California-bred yearling fllies for $200,000 apiece at the Fasig-Tipton California fall yearlings and horses of racing sale Sept. 27 at Pomona, the 64-year-old horseman was back at his ranch paddock breaking the next group of yearlings.

“You can’t get complacent,” Hull said. “You gotta stay hungry.”

He and his brother Guy do it all at their 15-acre spread, known as Critter Creek Farm. About 30 miles northwest of Spokane, it’s in a fairly remote location. While mucking stalls on a recent afternoon, Hull began to refect on what happened on sale day. Te fllies, named Truly Magical and Someone Like You, were

both purchased by Samantha Siegel’s Jay Em Ess Stable, and their price tied for the second highest of the sale.

“I’m kind of emotional about it, but I was just so proud of them,” said Hull, his voice cracking a bit as he related the moment. “(Te fllies) were so busy all day. At a sale like that, it doesn’t take long for the word to get out. And everyone wanted to see them; a lot of people came back two or three times.

“Te girls were just stars all day. Nothing rattled them, not even in the sales ring with the announcer and all the other commotion. Tey were just so cool, standing there. Never showed any nervousness.”

Hull and his brother handled the shipping of the Critter Creek consignment to the sale. Te trip to Pomona, using two trucks and trailers, “took 30 hours straight through,” he said.

“It was very stressful,” Hull said. “I used to do an overnight stop for trips like this, but it seemed like there were always problems with the horses afterward. So as hard as it is, we fnd it’s better just to do it straight through,” though they make brief stops along the way.

Hull has lived his whole life around horses, and he’s been breaking young ones for 45 years. When it comes to equines of all types, there’s not much he hasn’t done. And yet he still fnds the hardest part of the breeding game is saying good-bye.

“I call them my kids because they mean so much to me,” Hull said. “I get so attached to them. It’s hard for me to let them go. I know it seems funny to feel that way in a business like this, but when you spend so much time with young horses and see them grow and mature mentally, it’s hard not to.”

Te best part of the deal on the fllies (besides the money, of course) was that they are still together, he says.

“Both fllies have been raised together. Tey’ve played and slept together. Now it’s even possible that they’ll race against each other. We are so thrilled that the two girls got such a wonderful owner like Samantha Siegel. And her trainer, Brian Koriner, takes great care of his horses.”

Truly Magical, a dark bay flly by Good Magic—Nine Point Nine, by Tribal Rule, and Someone Like You, a chestnut flly by Stanford— Open Mic, by Unbridled’s Song, topped a seven-horse Critter Creek consignment that brought $602,000.

30 CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED ❙ November 2022 ❙ www.ctba.com CTBA
Stormy Hull and his Critter Creek consignment found much success at the Fasig-Tipton California fall sale of yearlings, led by two fillies selling for $200,000 each FASIG-TIPTON PHOTO

Nine Point Nine was bred by Hull and Ginger A. Samples, his former partner, and purchased back from Holly and David Wilson through their trainer, Vladimir Cerin, once her racing career was over. Open Mic was purchased in foal to Stanford for $11,500 at the 2021 CTBA January mixed sale.

“Sometimes, you just get lucky,” Hull said.

Te breeding to Good Magic, Hull says, was made possible by owner John Sikura and the Hill ‘n’ Dale syndicate, which stands Good Magic.

“I would never have been able to breed to a horse like Good Magic—a 2-year-old champion and a Breeders’ Cup Juvenile champion—without their help. It was a true honor for me.”

Hull’s Fasig-Tipton consignment included a Clubhouse Ride colt, who went for $90,000 to Boomer Bloodstock and Radley Equine, and a full brother to multiple stakes winner California Diamond named Ten of Di amonds, who sold for $60,000 to agent Tari Brocklebank.

Bred by Hull, California Diamond was a four-time stakes winner at 2 and voted the champion California-bred juvenile male of 2016. Te son of Harbor the Gold out of Carrie’s a Jewel was one of 46 horses killed in the Lilac Fire that swept through San Luis Rey Downs Dec. 7, 2017.

California Diamond, owned by Rockingham Ranch and an earner of $475,970, is Hull’s most accomplished

runner to date. Nearly fve years after the colt’s death, Hull fnds it difcult to discuss.

“It still hurts,” he said. “He provided me with thrills and emotions that I’ve never experienced before. He was such a special colt. He was laid back but easy to train, and he just got better and better as he grew up.”

In recent years Hull has concentrated his breeding and sales eforts on the California market.

“Tere’s not much horse breeding

going on around here anymore,” he said of Washington. “Emerald Downs is down to racing 52 days a year, and that’s not enough to sustain a breeding program. I wish it weren’t so.

“A lot of people tell me I ought to just move to California. But I really love where we’re at and I’d hate to leave.”

Hull keeps his most recent success in perspective.

“I’ve had a really good year,” he said. “But last year was maybe my worst. Loss of livestock, the quality of the stock, expenses, you name it. Te thing is, this business always keeps me humble. But this is what I love to do. Horses have always been an important part of my life, even when I was little. Call it the horse gene.

“None of this do I do by myself. I see it like a bicycle wheel full of spokes. Each one of those spokes is equally important because if any one of them fails, then the whole thing can fail.”

“Tere are so many people that I should give credit to, but three who really stand out—Dave McGlothin and Jonny Hilvers at Harris Farms and Mike Allen at Tommy Town Toroughbreds. Dave gave me the confdence that I could compete in California, and Jonny and Mike for their continuing support. Talk about strong spokes. And the California Toroughbred Breeders Association—the people there have been so good and so helpful.”

NOCARDIOFORM PLACENTITIS— BEYOND KENTUCKY?

In the United States, approximately 3 to 5% of Toroughbred broodmares sufer late-term pregnancy losses due to placentitis (infammation and infection of the placenta). Tat makes it the single most common cause of abortions, stillbirths, and loss of newborn foals and results in multimillion-dollar losses in the equine breeding industry.

Four forms of equine placentitis are recognized: ascending, focal mucoid (nocardioform), difuse (hematogenous), and multifocal placentitis. Ascending placentitis is the most frequent; the ascending infection (predominately caused by Streptococcus equi sub. zooepidemicus) gains access through the vagina and cervix. Multifocal and difuse placentitis are less common and usually due to spread of microorganisms to the uterus via the bloodstream. A number of diseases might cause this type of infection, including

leptospirosis and salmonellosis. Mucoid or nocardioform placentitis is a distinctly diferent type of equine placentitis, characterized by focal infection of the chorionic surface leading to mucoid exudate and loss of placental exchange of nutrients in these areas. While much of the news of this form of placentitis has come out of Kentucky, other parts of the world have seen it and investigative work on it is being done at the University of California, Davis to see whether the condition has occurred in the state but hasn’t

yet been diferentiated from other forms of placentitis.

Dr. Maria Schnobrich of the LeBlanc Reproduction Center at Rood & Riddle Equine hospital in Kentucky says nocardioform placentitis has a characteristic presentation that is usually diagnosed in late gestation—from about eight months to term.

“It’s called a mucoid placentitis,” Schnobrich said, “because there are some very large areas of placental destruction that are usually covered in a thick brown, mucoid material, with destruction of normal function of that portion of the placenta that interfaces with the uterus in these areas.

Diagnosis of nocardioform placentitis is based on evaluation of the placenta and isolating a certain group of bacteria, such as the Actinomycetes shown here, which create a slow-grow ing nasty infection that disrupts the surface tissues

“When a mare has this problem, often the only external sign you will see is that she is developing an udder too early, or she may abort, or the foal may be born at term (and might be normal). Te characteristic lesion is a ‘peanut butter’ consistency-looking material on the red velvety side of the placenta known as the chorioallantois.”

In these cases, the connection between the outer lining of the placenta and the uterine lining has been disrupted.

“What we see, depending on extent of the lesions, is that if the rest of the placenta has adequate exchange with minimal infammation, it may not afect the foal at all. If there is too much disruption, however, and not enough contact for nutrient and oxygen exchange, the fetus may be starved and stunted, or may die.”

Tis has been a very frustrating condition because it’s not very easy to detect.

“Tere was an outbreak here in Kentucky in 2010, and then we had another outbreak in 2020,” Schnobrich said. “In that recent one, there was a much higher incidence of losses due to this problem. A white paper was written on this topic describing what is known about it.

“Te diagnosis is based on evaluation of the placenta and being able to isolate a certain group of bacteria that have similar characteristics, some of which are usually associated with soil-borne diseases. Tese bacteria are called Actinomyces (the same ones that can cause lump jaw and abscesses in cattle after entering the mouth tissues

via a nick or puncture from sharp material in the feed). In the placenta these bacteria create a slow-growing, nasty infection that disrupts the surface tissues.

“Diagnosis is based on a PCR identifcation of these bacteria in the areas of placental disruption, along with the characteristic appearance of the placenta or fetal membranes. Te two bacterial species commonly isolated are Crossiella equi and Amycolatopsis kentuckiensis

(Nocardioform placentitis) is called a mucoid placentitis because there are some very large areas of placental destruction that are usually covered in a thick brown mucoid material, with destruction of normal function of that portion of the placenta that interfaces with the uterus in those areas.”

“Sometimes these are not found, but the placenta still has a mucoid appearance and these cases seem to behave similarly and may have the same pathogenesis. Te location where this occurs is interesting; it is usually along the bottom of the uterine body, in contrast to ascending placentitis that comes through the cervix and afects

the cervical star.

“Nocardioform placentitis occurs where the uterine horns separate. Te location is unusual, and this is one of the reasons we don’t see much discharge from the vulva with this type of infection in earlier stages, because it is much farther from the cervix.”

Dr. Pouya Dini, an assistant professor in equine reproduction and co-director of the University of California, Davis Veterinary Assisted Reproduction laboratory, says that initially people thought that nocardioform placentitis was limited to central Kentucky, since that’s where all the cases had been reported.

“Over the years, there have been several outbreaks of this form of placentitis in Kentucky, and the last outbreak was in 2020 with about 210 cases of nocardioform placentitis,” Dini said.

A few cases of this disease always occurred in other parts of the world, however, such as Italy, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand—with maybe one or two cases in each country.

“Ten we started to see more reports from the U.S.,” Dini said. “It was reported in Florida several years ago, and more recently in Louisiana. Tis year there was a report of nocardioform placentitis in Brazil, and in early August, there was a paper that came out from the New Bolton Center (at the University of Pennsylvania). Tey had seen some cases of nocardioform placentitis in that region too—and these mares had not resided in Kentucky for breeding or any part of their gestation.

So it’s not just occurring in Kentucky; we are seeing more and more cases in other regions.

“When I frst moved to California, I asked the diagnostic lab here about nocardioform cases, and their answer was that this disease is only in Kentucky and that we don’t have it here. Tis approach needs to change, or at least we should examine the placentas to make sure they are healthy.”

Schnobrich noted that in Australia some similar lesions have been seen on placentas and associated with horses eating a certain type of caterpillar.

“Tese caterpillars have tiny barbs that

GETTY IMAGES

seem to migrate through the mare’s body (from the gut) to the placenta—with these tiny little ‘sticks’ stuck into the placenta,” Schnobrich said. “Researchers tried to see if that’s what’s been going on here in the U.S. but have not been able to show that.

“Te frustrating thing is that researchers have not been able to replicate this disease in an experimental model. When they tried to give mares doses of bacterial agents by IV or orally or through tubing, they could not induce the same lesions. So we are still wondering how the bacteria get into the placenta, or if they are even the cause to begin with.

“Tis disease does seem to be most prevalent in the Kentucky-Ohio region, and when we’ve had outbreaks, there were higher incidence of losses. But we’ve also seen it happen in other places. Cases have now been seen in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and all over the country. More people have been reporting these so we know it’s not just a local occurrence. Maybe by increasing awareness we will identify more cases.”

Nocardioform placentitis does seem to occur more often when weather is dry and hot.

“Tis certainly fts with California and some of the other western states,” Schnobrich said. “As things get hotter and drier, this may become more of an issue.”

Te pathogens could be in the dust if it’s a soil-borne disease.

“What’s puzzling is that when people have tried to isolate the organism in the environment (after seeing a case), they have not been able to do that,” Schnobrich said. “Te problem is that this infection is happening at a certain time point that’s earlier than when we usually recognize it. We see it when the mares foal, but this is months past when they became infected.

“Looking into this has become the project of many veterinarians, PhD students, and researchers in Kentucky, and it has been a source of signifcant frustration because we are still trying to fgure out what is causing this. Tere have been some really good studies performed by researchers such as Dr. Barry Ball, Igor Canisso, and Carleigh Fedorka, but no one can determine how this disease is working.”

Dini notes that while researchers do not know the exact causes of nocardioform

placentitis, they are examining placentas more closely.

“Tere are several microbes that we think are associated with nocardioform placentitis, and more recently Streptomyces spp, and now we have better tools to detect them,” Dini said. “Te more samples we

submit for diagnostic testing, the greater chance that we will fnd one or two cases here and there.”

However, the diagnosis of this condition is not straightforward. Even during the 2020 outbreak in central Kentucky, when people were looking at several hundred placentas and Dini was involved with those studies, it was found that 20% or more of the “healthy” samples were diagnosed with nocardioform placentitis.

At the same time, in the 2020 outbreak, about 45% of placentitis cases that were submitted were negative for these microbes even though those placentas had signs of infammation associated with mucoid placentitis—with exudate and mucous material on the placenta or areas where all the normal surface interface is gone.

“We saw these signs, but couldn’t fnd those microbes in the sample,” Dini said. “Tat’s why we are not sure what exactly causes this disease.

“Now we have better tools to fnd and identify these suspected microbes; we have better probes for PCR tests. So we are seeing this disease more and in diferent places. Brazil and New Bolton, for instance, are places where they are using PCR techniques rather than simply trying to culture the bacteria. Tey are fnding these microbes, but how these microbes are associated with this disease, we still don’t know.”

Dini’s lab is working on nocardioform placentitis at UC Davis.

“We have a few grants,” he said, “including grants from Te Foundation for the Horse, Te Center for Equine Health at UC-Davis, and Grayson Jockey Club, to investigate the microbial population of placentas in this form of placentitis and identify the microbes that are actually associated with this form.”

Tey found that the typical sign of nocardioform placentitis—a green to peanut-butter looking exudate—is not always associated with the suspect microbes.

“Taking all this information into account, there is a good chance that we have nocardioform placentitis here in California,” Dini said. “We’ve had only one case from California at our lab, from a mare that was born, raised, and bred here. When we looked at the placenta, it looked like a typical nocardioform placentitis, but we didn’t culture it because now we know that these

microbes can be found in a healthy placenta anyway. We are trying to determine which other microbes are also involved in these cases, to be able to determine whether we have nocardioform placentitis or not.”

Tere are many types of placentitis, and this seems to be one that might show up if a person is doing late-term ultrasound.

“We may be able to diagnosis it at that time,” said Schnobrich. “People have taken swabs after mares abort, and may fnd that the bacteria are sensitive to certain antibiotics.”

It may be possible to treat a mare before she aborts if the condition is detected early with ultrasound.

“Part of my job is doing late pregnancy screening, before mares develop an udder and before they have any issues,” Schnobrich said. “I am believer in doing late pregnancy ultrasound—sometime after 250 days. If we can check mares twice, we may also be able to catch early ascending placentitis, or identify nocardioform placentitis, and be ahead of the game and treat the mare. You could plan the foaling and may be able to slow the disease process. You may not be able to cure the problem, but could slow the progression of the disease and improve the outcome, with better chance for a live and healthy foal.”

Some of the other causes for fetal loss may look a certain way on ultrasound, and sometimes they can all look similar. But when you see nocardioform placentitis, it usually has a very distinct appearance on ultrasound in initial stages.

“It looks like a couple of centimeters of free-moving thick fuid,” Schnobrich said, “where there is separation of the endometrial lining of the uterus from the frst layer of placenta that contacts it. In advanced cases this can be easy to fnd, and often the other aspects of the exam (character of fetal fuids, region around the cervix and placental thickness) are remarkably normal.”

Te appearance of the placenta where the infection has damaged it is also easy to see, and horsemen should always be checking the placenta after a mare foals.

“If it is truly nocardioform placentitis, it would be helpful to document this,” Schnobrich said. “It would help us know how signifcant this might actually be in other areas of the country. We might fnd more cases than we suspected.

“We are quite a ways behind human medicine in pregnancy screening. With humans, in the month preceding delivery we know that many things can change. Tere will be pelvic relaxation, cervical relaxation, and many things can happen. It just makes sense to screen mares, too, and try to identify any issues; an ounce of prevention can go a long way in making a better outcome. Mare owners have come this far, hoping for a live healthy foal, and one or two pregnancy scans in late gestation could make all the diference.”

Don’t wait to see if the foal is ok. Always check the placenta. With this disease as a possibility, it is even more important to look for the exudate material and/or avillus area. If you see either of these signs, be aware that the foal may be afected.

California breeders and farm personnel should look closely at the placenta every time a mare foals to check for exudate material or denuded areas.

“If they see either of these situations, they need to check those foals,” Dini said. “Checking the placenta after foaling needs to be a routine procedure in any foaling facility. All personnel need to know what a healthy placenta looks like.

“Nocardioform placentitis only causes abortion in 10% to 15% of cases; the abortion rate is not as high as it is with ascending placentitis, especially if it can be detected early. Te foal is more likely to go to term and may seem OK for a while. With those foals, however, there is a chance they will become septic afterward.

“Te important thing is to be proactive.

“Many people, including personnel at our lab at UC-Davis, are trying to understand more about this disease. If there is any question about a mare’s placenta, contact your veterinarian, and show him/ her a photo of it. And for veterinarians it is important to know that this disease is not just in Kentucky.

“We do know that the pregnancy rate after an abortion from nocardioform placentitis is similar to that of normal mares. One study found that it only took recovered mares 1.5 cycles to become pregnant— which was the same amount of time for the healthy control mares. So the abortion has no efect on the future fertility of the mare.”

Dini pointed out that the climate in Brazil, where a number of nocardioform placentitis cases have been seen, is similar to California—hot and dry.

“Te fact that we have already seen one potential case here makes us realize that it is probably likely to occur occasionally in California,” Dini said. “Breeders need to be aware of this possibility and look for it.”

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through October 23, 2022.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
