CAL-BREDS TO BENEFIT FROM RECORD DEL MAR PURSES

s highlighted on the cover of this edition of California Toroughbred, the Del Mar race meet beginning this month will ofer the highest purses ever in California racing. With more than $800,000 distributed in purses per day, the opportunities for California-breds are extremely lucrative. For example, Cal-bred restricted maiden special weight races will have a purse of $80,000 while a Cal-bred frst condition allowance race will have a purse of $82,000. And Cal-bred maiden $50,000 claiming races have elevated purses of $42,000. In addition to the increased purses, Del Mar has also enacted a maiden dirt bonus of an additional 25% to Cal-bred maiden special weight races for all ages. Terefore, all dirt maiden special weight races for Cal-breds will ofer a new total purse of $100,000. Te one stipulation for the dirt bonus is that the trainer must have fewer than 60 horses on the Southern California circuit to qualify. Te specifcs are outlined on page 18. We are also pleased to announce that not only will all historic Golden State Series races be carded as in the past, but

Give Me the Lute Repeats in Albany California-bred Give Me the Lute won the $50,000 Albany Stakes at Golden Gate Fields June 11. It was his second consecutive victory in the event. With Irving Orozco in the irons, Give Me the Lute set the pace throughout to defeat Cal-bred Carolina Mia by a neck as the 7-5 favorite. It was a Cal-bred Trifecta, as Cal-bred Psycho Dar closed for third. Give Me the Lute completed Give Me The Lute the fve furlongs on turf in :56.72. Roderick and Wendy Hogan own Give Me the Lute, a 6-year-old gelded son of Boisterous—Steal the Lute, by Midnight Lute, bred by Gary Barber. Andy Mathis trains Give Me the Lute and was picking up his fourth consecutive Albany Stakes win, having succeeded in the race with Cal-bred Mikes Tiznow in 2019-20.

Absolutely Zero defed her name and scored in the $102,000 Fasig-Tipton Futurity against males in the stakes for 2-year-olds at Santa Anita June 18. Te California-bred flly prompted the pace under jockey Mario Gutierrez, took over from Tahoma in the stretch, and defeated that rival in :59.09 for fve furlongs. Absolutely Zero Doug O’Neill trains Absolutely Zero for Paul and Zillah Reddam’s Reddam Racing, which also bred the daughter of Nyquist—How About Zero, by Square Eddie. Absolutely Zero was winning her second race in as many starts, having broken her maiden May 21 at Santa Anita. How About Zero was a good stakes-winning Cal-bred for the Reddams. She earned $349,640 and won the 2016 Golden State Juvenile Fillies Stakes and the 2018 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint Stakes.

Tam’s Little Angel Scores at Pleasanton Tam’s Little Angel, a California-bred daughter of Tamarando, eked out a nose victory at Pleasanton in the $77,250 She’s a Tiger Stakes June 25. Under jockey Catalino Martinez, the 3-year-old flly led throughout the 11⁄16-mile stakes and gamely held of the closing Buyback to win in 1:44.91 during the Alameda County Fair meeting. Larry and Marianne Williams bred and race Tam’s Little Angel, a daughter of their homebred Lucky Pulpit mare Angel Diane. Steve

Specht trains Tam’s Little Angel, who has won three of her last four races. Her only loss during that stretch was a third in the Campanile Stakes at Golden Gate Fields. Te flly has never fnished worse than third in 10 lifetime starts and has earnings of $155,972. Te Williamses also bred and raced multiple graded stakes winner Tamarando, the 2013 champion Cal-bred 2-year-old male. Tey stand the son of Bertrando at John Harris’ Harris Farms in Coalinga.

Nader Named TOC President, CEO

HONG KONG JOCKEY CLUB

Bill Nader has been named president and chief executive ofcer of the Toroughbred Owners of California, succeeding Greg Avioli, who resigned earlier this year. Nader’s appointment will take efect in October. Nader, 64, most recently worked at the Hong Kong Jockey Club, where he has held senior positions since Bill Nader 2007. Since August he has been the HKJC director of racing product, marketing, and sponsorship. He also served as executive director of racing and the director of racing business and operations for the HKJC. From 1994-2007, Nader was the senior vice president and chief operating ofcer of the New York Racing Association. He grew up two miles from Rockingham Park in New Hampshire and worked at that racetrack from 1979-94. “California has been at the forefront of historic industry changes the last few years,” said Gary Fenton, chairman of the TOC, “and Bill’s appointment is another forward-thinking step. Te future of California racing has never been brighter.”

Camino Del Paraiso Retired

A minor injury led to the retirement of California-bred Camino Del Paraiso. Trainer O.J. Jauregui told Daily Racing Form that the 9-year-old gelding’s third in the April 30 San Francisco Mile (G3T) was his fnal start. Jauregui purchased Camino Del Paraiso for $5,000 from Harris Farms at the 2014 California Toroughbred Breeders Association Northern California sale. Te Cohen family’s Red Baron’s Barn bred the son of Suances—Loni’s Appeal, by Successful Appeal. Camino Del Paraiso turned into a bargain for owner Herb Moniz’ Paradise Road Ranch, earning $650,332 in his 48 starts. Te gelding won nine races, including the 2020-21 Camino Del Paraiso Rolling Green Stakes and 2020-21 Joseph T. Grace Stakes, all four stakes at Golden Gate Fields. Not only was Camino Del Paraiso an outstanding racehorse, he was able to return to competition after a serious eye injury nearly ended his life. Nervous whenever being shod, the gelding spooked early in 2021, sufering several injuries, including one to his left eye. Jauregui and Moniz enlisted the help of veterinarians at the University of California, Davis to help Camino Del Paraiso recuperate from neck and back injuries, and the team was able to save most of the vision in his eye. In his frst start back, the gelding captured his second Joseph T. Grace. In an article in this magazine documenting the experience, Moniz praised the sometimes headstrong Camino Del Paraiso, saying that “he’s been our shining light.” Moniz said that he would retire Camino Del Paraiso to a farm he owns in Northern California.

Del Mar frequently showcases California-breds, and Eclipse Award winners ACCLAMATION and AMAZOMBIE won at the seaside track in July 2012. Bred by Old English Rancho, Acclamation scored in the July 21 Eddie Read Stakes (G1). He defeated Argentine-bred Interaction by 23⁄4 lengths as the 1-2 favorite under jockey Pat Valenzuela, stopping the timer in 1:46.86 for 11⁄8 miles on turf. Don Warren trained the 6-year-old son of Unusual Heat— Winning in Style, by Silveyville, for E. W. and Judy Johnston and Peter and Mary Hilvers. Amazombie, ridden by Mike Smith, won the July 29 Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) by 11⁄4 lengths over favored The Factor in 1:08.65 for six furlongs. Bred by Gregg Anderson, the 6-year-old gelded son of Northern Afeet—Willshe Amaze, by In Excess, was owned by trainer Bill Spawr and Thomas Sanford..

25 YEARS AGO CAREER COLLECTION, a California-bred owned by John and Betty Mabee and bred in the name of their Golden Eagle Farm, captured the $100,000 Landaluce Stakes (G2) for 2-yearold fllies at Hollywood Park July 5, 1997. With Corey Nakatani aboard, she prompted the pace of odds-on favorite Bent Creek

City and defeated that rival by three lengths, getting the six furlongs in 1:102⁄5. A half sister to multiple group-placed Maraakiz, Career Collection was a daughter of General Meeting—River of Stars, by Riverman. She ultimately won four stakes and earned $560,477. Career Collection sold twice through the Keeneland November sale, bringing $1.9 million in foal to Gone West in 2000 and $450,000 in foal to Unbridled’s Song in 2004.

50 YEARS AGO MINSTREL MISS was consistency personifed, the California-bred distaffer winning or placing in 32 of her 44 lifetime starts for earnings of $280,655. Her fve stakes victories include the Palomar Handicap at Del Mar July 26, 1972. Ridden by Donald Pierce, Minstrel Miss defeated Florida-bred Street Dancer by two lengths, covering the distance of about 7 1⁄2 furlongs on turf in 1:282⁄5. Cal-bred Balcony’s Babe fnished third. Jack Grossman bred and owned Minstrel Miss, a daughter of Poona II—Tiny Wonder, by Fleet Nasrullah. Minstrel Miss’ other stakes wins include the 1973 Milady Handicap (G2T), Ramona Handicap (G3T), and Las Palmas Handicap (G3T). She went on to produce stakes winners Captain Vigors and Winter Treasure.

Square Eddie Filly Brings $140,000 A California-bred daughter of Square Eddie sold for $140,000 June 7 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales’ June 2-year-olds auction. Mike Akers purchased her as agent from the consignment of Wavertree Stables as agent. Paul and Zillah Reddam’s Reddam Racing bred the flly, who is out of the winning Cal-bred Momentum mare Puf Pastry. Te sale flly is a full sister to Square Peggy, a Cal-bred stakes-placed winner and earner of $276,504. In the pre-sale under-tack work, the Square Eddie flly completed one furlong in :10. 8

Five California stakes are part of a new Breeders’ Cup program called the Dirt Dozen. Consisting of 12 existing graded stakes races on dirt, the Dirt Dozen can earn horses credit toward entry fees for several 2022 Breeders’ Cup races on the dirt. This year’s Breeders’ Cup will be held Nov. 4-5 at Keeneland. The California races that are part of the program are the July 30 San Diego Handicap (G2), Aug. 28 Rancho Bernardo Stakes (G3), and Sept. 11 Del Mar Futurity (G1) at Del Mar and the Oct. 1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G2) and Oct. 2 Zenyatta Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita. Owners of horses fnishing frst, second, or third in these races may use credits earned toward entry fees for the $2 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1), $2 million Qatar Racing Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), $2 million TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), $2 million NetJets Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1), and $1 million Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1). In Dirt Dozen races within the $2 million Breeders’ Cup race divisions, the bonus tier is $30,000 for frst, $15,000 for second, and $7,500 for third. In Dirt Dozen races in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup race divisions, the bonus tier is $15,000 for frst, $7,500 for second, and $3,750 for third.

Memoriam Martin and Pam Wygod bred Coach Bob from the Yankee Gentlemen mare Gentlemen’s Hope. In the name of their River Edge Farm, the Wygods sold him for $5,000 at the 2010 California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Northern California yearling sale. “It’s a very sad day for all of us here at the farm,” said Julia Daehling Oldfeld. “He was a super easy stallion to work with, and he enjoyed human interaction and loved peppermints. He would run up the gate if he heard the wrappers. We will miss him.”

Thomas R. Bell Jr. Thomas R. (Tommy) Bell Jr., who trained California-bred Rumbo and was one of the multi-generational trainers of the Bell family, died June 24. He was 93. Bell was the son of Thomas R. Bell Sr. and the father of current trainer Thomas R. Bell II, both of whom were known as “Ray.” Bell Jr. went by Tommy. The family’s Bell Bloodstock Company was involved in selecting many good horses and raced Cal-bred Barberstown, trained by Thomas R. Bell II. Tommy trained Rumbo, a 1977 son of Ruffnal—Irreproachable, by Windy Sands, for Gayno Stable for most of the colt’s career. Bred by Westerly Stud Farms, Rumbo won a division of the 1980 Santa Catalina Stakes. He placed in three more Triple Crown preps that year, including the Santa Anita Derby (G1) and Hollywood Derby (G1), and famously fnished second to the flly Genuine Risk in that year’s Kentucky Derby (G1), closing furiously to miss her by just a length. Tommy also trained stakes winner Silver Eagle, who once defeated John Henry, and all three Bells were involved with Barberstown. Joe McDermott bred the son of Gummo—Available Miss, by Bolinas Boy, and Ridgeley Farm consigned the colt to the 1981 Del Mar yearling sale. Ray Sr. and Tommy discussed him at the sale, and Ray Sr. recalled that he told Tommy, “Whatever it takes, let’s buy him.” It took $100,000. Barberstown won his frst three races, including the 1983 Will Rogers Handicap (G3T), and he fnished third in that year’s Belmont Stakes (G1). During that time, the Bells were also involved with such stakes winners as 1980 El Dorado Handicap (G3) winner Cactus Road. Northern California Sale Date Changes to Aug. 17 Due to current stabling issues with Northern California racing, the date of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association Northern California sale has been changed to Wednesday, Aug. 17, eight days later than originally planned. It will be conducted at the Amador Pavilion at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton beginning at noon. Te sale horses will be stabled in the permanent barns near the Amador Pavilion. As in the past, the commission will be 5% of the fnal bid, with a minimum of $500. Te maximum commission for this year’s sale on an RNA will be capped at $1,000. A $500 travel allowance with a minimum purchase of $3,500 is being ofered to out-of-state trainers and trainers from Southern California with proof of travel who attend the upcoming California Yearling and Horses of Racing Age sale. Katarina Hilton Receives Scholarship Katarina (Kat) Hilton is this year’s recipient of the California Toroughbred Foundation’s 2022 Western University of Health Sciences scholarship. Te Foundation awards scholarships to students at Western University as well as to students at the University of California, Davis. Te curriculum vitae, personal essays, and in-person verbal interviews with these students leave our trustees inspired, hopeful, and flled with admiration for these extraordinary young people. Tey are brilliant, beyond hard-working, and willingly face a challenging life of service to horses. From an early age, Kat cared for her family’s Toroughbred horses, became a leader in Pony Club, and later became an event rider who assisted other riders and horses in the recovery veterinarian box. Tese early experiences made her path very clear: to provide proper medical care as an equine veterinarian. She has shadowed solo and multiple equine practices focused on lameness evaluations, pre-purchase examinations, diagnostic imaging, and movement for a variety of breeds, specifcally of-the-track Toroughbreds. As a veterinary student, Kat added to her intensive studies with leadership roles in the Western University Chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners. Multiple externships for hands-on evaluations, bar scans, MRI, and surgeries furthered her drive to be an ambulatory equine veterinarian. “Even to be interviewed for this scholarship tells me somebody is recognizing the challenge associated with being an equine veterinarian,” Kat said. “It is a boost to the morale that I am on the right path. To win it opens the gate to ofset some of the debt associated with veterinary school and encourages me all the more to keep going. I look forward to my fourth year of school, to gain more experience in sport and internal medicine, to graduate and dedicate myself to be an ambulatory veterinarian and serve the community that has given so much to me.”

DEL MAR SUMMER RUNNERS FIND RICH ENVIRONMENT

Del Mar’s 2022 purse structure and special incentive programs should promote full race felds for its 31-day summer meet

Del Mar is justifably proud to ofer the highest purses in California racing history, more than $800,000 per day, for a total of more than $25 million. Te 31-day meet is scheduled to open July 22 and run through Sept. 11. Overnight stakes have been raised to $100,000, and overnight purses range from $30,000 to $86,000, depending on the classifcation. For example, straight maiden races are ofering an $80,000 purse, with purses stepping up to $82,000, $84,000, and $86,000 as a horse runs through its conditions. Claiming horses can also run for big money. Horses running for a maiden $32,000 tag will also run for a purse of $32,000, and other claiming levels include $20,000 claimers running for $37,000 and $50,000 claimers running for $62,000. Not only can Cal-breds compete in these types of open purses but they will have a deep program of Cal-bred/California-sired overnight races and stakes. Te Golden State Series ofers eight stakes during the Del Mar summer meeting, beginning with the $175,000 Fleet Treat Stakes July 28 through the $125,000 I’m Smokin Stakes Sept. 9. Four of the stakes are for 2-yearolds, two are for 3-year-olds, and two are for 3-year-olds and up, giving all ages good opportunities. Te entire Del Mar stakes program is the most lucrative in the track’s history. More than half of the 34 stakes will have increased purses for 2022 for a record gross of $8,275,000. Six of Del Mar’s stakes are part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series.

We’re proud to present this program and expect it will be well received.” Two popular programs at Del Mar are its “Ship & Win” and “Maiden Dirt Bonus” (formerly the juvenile bonus). Both will likely draw an abundance of runners, and the Del Mar racing department points out how one horse can qualify for both. Te Ship & Win program, for qual-

ifed horses that last started outside of California, awards a guaranteed $5,000 in their frst Ship & Win start on dirt or $4,000 in their frst Ship & Win start on turf. In addition, a 50% bonus will be applied to the horse’s earnings for every dirt start and 40% for every turf start during the summer meet. Te Maiden Dirt Bonus ofers 25% more to runners of any age in maiden special weight dirt races, maiden special weight Cal-bred dirt races, and maiden claiming $62,500 and above dirt races. Te bonus applies to earnings for places one to fve and goes directly to the ownership. Te horse’s trainer must have fewer than 60 horses on the Southern California circuit for the horse to qualify for the program. “Last year we averaged a record $18.4 million a day in handle, and our feld size was 8.5 per race,” said Tom Robbing, Del Mar’s executive vice president for racing. “Tose are powerful numbers, not only in the West, but all across the country. We’re going to try to increase them this year, and I believe we’ve got a good chance to do so.”

California Farms Are in Serious Trouble SOARING HAY PRICES CONTRIBUTE TO FARMS’ LOSING MONEY

or many years California has been losing racehorse farms at an alarming rate. And now those few farms that remain might soon be forced out of business. Horse racing in California will simply not survive without them.

even smaller California foal crop, which has already dropped by 60% since 2005 (from 3,664 in 2005 to 1,451 in 2021). Smaller foal crops mean smaller feld sizes at the racetrack. Smaller felds mean bettors will look elsewhere to wager. Racetracks, now open only three days a week, will be forced to consider dropping another day. If racetracks are forced to do that, it is unlikely they will survive the associated

Te price of grain, bedding, fuel, and labor has risen sharply. But California farms have never seen anything like the current price of hay. A little recent history: Over the past 15 years the cost of hay has risen sharply and steadily. In the year 2005, for example, a truck-and-trailer load of hay was about $3,500. Tat amount of hay will feed about 60 horses for four to fve weeks. By 2021 the price of hay had reached about $6,500 per load. In the last quarter alone, prices have skyrocketed to as high as $14,500 per load, more than 400% than what it was in 2005. Te income that supports farms, derived mostly from boarding and training fees, has seen no such increase. Horse farms operate on razor-thin proft margins. But farms are now losing money. What if California racehorse farms start to go out of business? How will it affect the industry as a whole? If farms are forced out of business, the result will be an

drop in revenue. And it all comes back to the number of farms. Te causes for these historically high hay prices are varied. But, in essence, it comes down to supply and demand and water. A huge amount of hay that might otherwise be used by California farms is purchased by buyers from Japan, China, and the Middle East. Dairies also

buy a great deal of hay. Ten add in the high cost of fertilizer, pesticides, labor, and transportation. And fnally there’s the drought, which never seems to end and is made far worse by an acute lack of water storage. Te construction of new water storage facilities is stifed by lawsuits and political inaction. In addition, much-needed water is allowed to fow into the Pacifc Ocean rather than be diverted for agriculture and domestic consumption. Without adequate water, farmers cannot plant enough hay and prices are forced higher. In writing this article, we contacted a number of farms to learn what efect hay and other prices are having and what those farms’ managements are planning to do about it. Here is a sample of what we heard.

Some farms might be able to withstand operating losses better than others. But the vast majority face a stark, unpleasant yet inevitable choice: Either increase prices via a surcharge or rate increase or face bankruptcy. Other measures are being considered. Te California Toroughbred Breeders Association has already assembled a

I believe that older clients will leave the industry if prices go too high.” It is inevitable that racehorse owners will soon see substantial price increases at their farms. Te consensus among farms

task force to explore the idea of forming a hay-buying co-op to purchase large quantities of hay and thereby lower the prices. Tis sounds like a very good idea indeed. Tis bad economic period, like all others, will pass. Te stagfation of the 1980s with 15% infation, 18% mortgage rates, and slow growth was followed by 20 years of prosperity. Tere is every reason to hope that when this bad economic period ends, it too will be followed by a similar period of growth and prosperity. In the meantime, our farms must survive so that horse racing itself survives in California.

Te California-bred gelding sold for just $5,000 at the 2014 edition of the sale and went on to earn a total of $650,332. He isn’t the only bargain graduate of the sale through the years. Just a few of the others that sold as yearlings include Cal-bred stakes winners Minister of Soul ($16,000 in 2015 and an earner of $398,710 to date), El Chavo Del Ocho ($4,000 in 2016 and an earner of $340,213 to date), and Freeport Joe ($2,000 in 2018 and an earner of $255,824 to date).

John Harris’ Harris Farms sold Camino Del Paraiso, a son of Suances, to trainer O.J. Jauregui, who trained the gelding throughout his career for Herb Moniz’ Paradise Road Ranch. Harris brings a consignment to the Northern sale every year, both for its own account and as agent. For 2022, Harris has consigned six for the farm and nine as agent. Several are by stallions standing at Harris: three by Smiling Tiger, two by Conquest Far-

enheit, two by Uptown Rythem, one by Om, and one by Tamarando. Te other stallions represented in the consignment are Vronsky (who stood at Harris until his death in 2021), Stay Tirsty, and Clubhouse Ride. Te other two Smiling Tiger yearlings in the catalog come from Hanson’s River Ranch. Tat consignor is also bringing a yearling by leading California sire Grazen and a Cal-bred yearling by Kentucky sire Goldencents. Stay Tirsty led all other California sires in many categories last year, including sires of 2-year-olds with his frst California crop. Mr. T’s Tirsty, a stakes-placed earner of $109,250 to date, was part of that frst crop, and he sold for $40,000 at the 2020 Northern sale out of Terry Lovingier’s Lovacres Ranch consignment. Stay Tirsty stands at Lovacres, and Lovingier has 26 yearlings, 17 of them by Stay Tirsty, in the catalog for Lovacres. Te stallion has a total of 19 in the sale, the other two with Harris. Te Lovacres consignment also includes fve by Smokem, two by Govenor Charlie, and one by Grace Upon Grace, who all stand at Lovacres as well. favorite in the feld of four. Becca Taylor broke like a shot for jockey Juan Hernandez in the six-furlong Desert Stormer, prompting Hernandez after the race to comment that “she was a little fresh.” Dance to the Music, trained by Mark Glatt and ridden by Abel Cedillo, quickly engaged Becca Taylor from the rail position and took the lead, responsible for the frst quarter-mile in :21.95. Tose two battled around the turn, with Becca Taylor putting her head in front to claim the half-mile fraction of :43.85. “I didn’t want to be head and head,” said Hernandez. “But as soon as she felt the inside horse, she was ready to take of, and that’s why we went a little fast.”

And then there’s Becca Taylor, an Alexander-homebred distafer who won the June 4 Desert Stormer Stakes (G3). She is that rare Alexander runner not by Grazen. Instead, she is a daughter of deceased California sire Old Topper. California-bred Becca Taylor could be the best of the bunch, and that’s saying something. She is eight for nine lifetime, her one loss a slim nose to Eddie’s New Dream in the March 19 Irish O’Brien Stakes down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course. Until the Desert Stormer, Alexander and trainer Steve Miyadi were running Becca Taylor through her allowance conditions and winning stakes for California-breds and/or California-sired runners. Bettors knew to take her seriously in graded company, however, and sent her of as the 3-5

Dance to the Music refused to give up, reclaiming the lead in the stretch. Becca Taylor came right back and ultimately pulled away to win by 21⁄2 lengths over Dance to the Music in 1:09.35. It was 33⁄4 lengths back to third-place Samurai Charm, who had 17 lengths on Dynasty of Her Own. “Mark Glatt had a nice horse—the competition was tough,” said Alexander. “She’s never beaten anybody by a whole bunch. She just seems to like to lay of and win by a little bit.” Alexander named Becca Taylor for his niece. Te 4-year-old flly is the fnal foal out of the General Meeting mare Lady Sax, who won her only start and was claimed by the late trainer Mike Mitchell. Mitchell trained for Alexander for years, and the owner honors his memory by using Mitchell’s silks. Lady Sax also produced multiple stakes-placed Hail Mary, a full sister to Becca Taylor. Te Desert Stormer was Becca Taylor’s frst graded victory to go with earlier stakes wins in the 2022 Spring Fever Stakes and 2021 Evening Jewel Stakes. She has earned $379,160. “It’s a feather in her cap for her,” said Alexander. “Her mom is gone; her sire is gone. So she’s carrying on for them.”

FRIENDLY ADVICE LEADS TO RACING SUCCESS

hen it came to business, lifelong Sacramento resident Larry Odbert had a knack for making the right choices—at least often enough to be highly successful. But more than 10 years after getting into horse ownership, including a few stabs at breeding a couple of the mares he had acquired, the 69-year-old Odbert admits he was stymied. Associated with or in charge of more than 20 businesses during a career of 40-plus years, Odbert wondered whether he was doing the right thing being in the horse trade. But then along came “Joe.” Freeport Joe, that is. Te 5-year-old California-bred gelded son of the deceased top turf sire English Channel has been on a tear at Golden Gate Fields. He has

won six of 11 starts dating back to August 2021, with two seconds and a third. A tyro over Golden Gate’s all-weather Tapeta main track, the late-running Freeport Joe has won two of the biggest races in Northern California in recent months. He grabbed the Berkeley Handicap (G3) in November, upsetting Camino Del Paraiso at odds of 10-1, and most recently captured the listed All American Stakes on May 30. Overall, the big bay is seven-for-18 for trainer Gloria Haley since making his debut in January 2021. He’s earned $255,824 racing exclusively at Golden Gate. Te best part: Odbert purchased Freeport Joe for the bargain-basement price of $2,000 at the 2018 California Toroughbred Breeders Association Northern California yearling sale. Odbert said Freeport Joe

is named for his good friend Joe Blight, who played an important role in the horse’s acquisition. Back in 1969, Blight was a standout quarterback at C.K. McClatchy High School, which is on Freeport Boulevard in Sacramento. Odbert said Blight earned the nickname “Freeport Joe” after “Broadway Joe” Namath, who had famously taken the New York Jets to the Super Bowl III championship over the Baltimore Colts in one of the greatest upsets in pro football history. Trough family connections, Odbert and Blight became friends as youngsters and have been pals ever since. It was Blight, a close follower of horse racing, whom Odbert often relied upon for turf advice. Odbert joked that he calls Blight his “bloodstock agent,” but adds seriously, “I never buy a horse without his say-so.” Blight recalled, “(In 2018) Larry came to me and said, ‘Look, I need some help here. Nothing is working out.’ And I told him the frst thing he had to do is to quit claiming cheap horses. You can’t make it in this game doing that.” Te two friends talked about the Northern California yearling sale that was coming up later that summer in Pleasanton. It’s the sort of auction where an astute buyer with limited resources can fnd a horse capable of competing at Golden Gate or elsewhere, sometimes at the stakes level.

Odbert had never been to the sale before, but they zeroed in on a pair of English Channel yearlings bred by Richard Barton Enterprises. Looking for a turf horse that would go long, Blight said he was particularly intrigued by the larger of the pair. Not only was this prospect by English Channel, but his Irish-bred dam, Winds of March, is by Sadler’s Wells. Winds of March had sold for $1.9 million at the 2007 Keeneland November sale as a 6-year-old broodmare in foal to Kingmambo. But her progeny had never accomplished much. Further along in her breeding career, she was ofered at the same sale in 2016. Barton purchased her in foal to English Channel for a mere $5,000. “Joe (the horse) was big and athletic, and I liked the way he moved,” Blight said. “I expected that with his size, it might take a while before he’d be ready to race.” Odbert made the only bid on the yearling, which Blight still fnds “unbelievable.” “I think most buyers at that sale are looking for yearlings that will be ready to go after those 2-year-old purses,” he said. Freeport Joe wasn’t ready for the track as a 2-year-old, nor was he ready at 3. “He had to grow into his body,” Odbert said. “Mentally, he wasn’t coordinated (when he was younger).” He also could be quite a handful, the friends acknowledged. Tey credit Haley for showing infnite patience as “Joe” matured. “Gloria has done a helluva job with him,” Odbert said. “She’s the perfect trainer for him,” Blight added. “He’s the kind of a horse that wants everything just the way he wants it. He’s a pretty nervous guy.” So far, the one thing Freeport Joe hasn’t done is show his mettle on the turf. He’s won only once on the sod in seven tries. He’ll get more opportunities with Golden Gate closed for the summer fair season. Haley plans to

run him on the turf at Del Mar Aug. 6 in the California Dreamin’ Stakes at 11⁄16 miles for Cal-breds and California-sired runners. “One thing about Golden Gate is they rarely run races longer than a mile (on the grass), and we think Joe wants more ground,” Blight said. Odbert, who has eight horses in training, plans to send a couple of maidens to Del Mar as well. For the future, he also has a couple of homebred yearlings by Sir Prancealot that he feels have good potential. Odbert and his wife, Susan, live in the Elmhurst section of Sacramento. Tey have three adult children. He currently is president of two property management companies: Global Capital Concepts Inc. and Andco Farms Inc., which specializes in agricultural acreage.

Odbert said he would like to cut back on those businesses and spend more time on expanding his racing and breeding ventures. “I’d like to do more with horse racing,” he said, “but it seems to me you’ve got to be in Southern California because the purses are so much better there. So we’ll see.” And he plans to return with Blight to the NorCal sale this August. “I’m gonna fnd another Freeport Joe,” he said. For his part, Blight said he’s glad he had the chance to help Odbert, “one of the best human beings around,” and he’s enjoyed the journey of Freeport Joe. “Tis horse has really given us something to look forward to,” he added. “It’s made me feel younger.”

s breeders know, some mares are hard to get in foal. Mares that have not had a foal for two or more years in spite of being bred to fertile stallions can be difcult challenges, especially if there are no obvious reasons for their infertility.

Dr. Patrick McCue, with the Equine Reproduction Laboratory at Colorado State University, says that when a problem mare gets referred to him, the frst thing he does is get a complete breeding history. He then gives the mare a thorough examination. A general exam is important to make sure there are no underlying health issues. He follows that with a reproductive examination. Occasionally, a blocked oviduct might be suspected, if no other reasons can be found for the infertility. In recent years, following research in the human medical feld, blockage of the

oviduct has been recognized as a cause of infertility in mares. Mares with normal ovulations that continually fail to conceive with no evidence of disease of the uterus or cervix could be sufering from blocked oviducts. Te oviduct goes from the ovary to the uterus and is where fertilization occurs. If it is blocked, the fertilized egg cannot make it through the oviduct into the uterus. Blockage might be due to the accumulation of debris from previous ovulations or pregnancies. Te blockage might not be complete and will often allow passage of sperm, due

to their small size, but it does not allow passage of the developing embryo that must come down into the uterus. Tus, the embryo dies in the oviduct. It is almost impossible to tell from a physical examination whether the mare has a blocked oviduct. However, today some relatively new therapies can be tried if other treatments have failed and a blocked oviduct is suspected. Research has shown that the application of prostaglandin to the oviduct will cause it to contract and fush the debris.

One of the frst studies looking at treating blocked oviducts by laparoscopically guided administration of PGE2-laced triacetin gel directly onto the surface of a mare’s oviduct was published in 2006. Tis study used 15 mares with known reproductive histories of inexplicable failure of conception. Te mares were 10 to 21 years old and had not conceived for one to four years. After the experimental treatment, 14 of those mares (93%) conceived within the same or subsequent breeding season. In their report, the researchers stated that the high success rate of this treatment supports tentative diagnosis of oviduct obstruction in these mares and indicates that blockage of the oviducts can occur in the form of a movable accumulation of debris rather than from permanent fbrous adhesions resulting from salpingitis (infammation of the tubes, usually caused by bacterial infection ascending from the uterus). Scone Equine Hospital in Australia has been treating mares with this method since 2009. Laparoscopy is a surgical technique in which a long camera is placed into the horse’s abdomen to view the oviduct, uterus, and other internal organs. A laparoscopic technique to view and treat the oviduct with prostaglandin has achieved good fertility rates in previously infertile mares. Te procedure was originally performed four days after ovulation with the mare standing and sedated. In more recent years it’s been found that the technique can be done at any time during the estrous cycle. Some mare owners decide to have it done before breeding season starts. Surgeons at the Scone Equine Hospital have also found

that tight bands can cross the oviduct, potentially blocking the duct, and these can be cut at the time of surgery. Te Scone hospital has performed laparoscopic treatment on more than 120 mares, achieving a pregnancy rate of more than 80%. Considering that these mares had a pregnancy rate of 0% for the previous year, this is an amazing result. Of the mares that conceive after surgery, up to 50% have done so on the same cycle as the surgery.

A Japanese study published in 2017 looked at fushing oviducts with saline. In that study, about 10 milliliters of saline were fushed through the oviducts in 28 mares with reproductive histories of unexplained subfertility. All mares in the study had been previously bred numerous times to fertile stallions, with no evidence of conception. Te mares were standing sedated, and a catheter was inserted into the juncture between the uterus and the oviduct under endoscopic guidance. Te Japanese researchers passed an endoscope into the uterus and, through it, threaded a stylet (a slender probe) and tubing to the tip of the uterine horn and into the oviduct. Te sterile saline was administered through this tube to fush out any blockage mechanically. Saline was successfully infused, and of the 28 mares, 26 (93%) conceived after the treatment within one or two cycles. Tis technique is being used by Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Ken-

Dr. Maria Schnobrich, a boarded theriogenologist at the LeBlanc Reproduction Center at Rood and Riddle, says this technique might increase the function of the oviduct by removing debris. “It is something we use in mares that all other treatments and diagnostics have failed to resolve or identify a problem,” Schnobrich said. Many diferent pathologies can cause a mare not to become pregnant, and it is important to review the history and perform a thorough exam before recommending this procedure. “We are only recommending it for certain mares that fail to become pregnant (no embryo produced or seen at early pregnancy diagnosis) despite good management, stallion changes, and appropriate treatment.” Schnobrich said. “Te mare usually has a history of producing pregnancies and then stops. She may have a year or several years when you can’t get her pregnant. At the 14-day check, there’s nothing there. It can be a maiden mare or one that’s had 34

previous pregnancies.” Te mare’s oviduct is unique compared to those of other domestic animals. “Tere is a small sphincter that only allows the embryo to pass through, and not unfertilized eggs,” Schnobrich said. “We don’t know whether the oviduct problem is a blockage in the oviduct itself or if the opening is blocked from debris. But the fush has restored fertility in about 65% of our treated cases.”

Tis is a standing procedure, with the mare sedated in stocks. “We perform hysteroscopy (using a small camera on the end of a tube that allows us to see inside the uterus) and fush the oviduct with a small catheter once we identify and locate the opening of the oviduct,” Schnobrich said. “Tere has been a lot of work on developing tests to decide if the oviduct is occluded, but often we are suspicious based on history and clinical fndings and don’t do the tests. We do not want to risk testing and causing an occlusion with the use of potentially irritating substances. Often our ‘test’ is simply that the procedure is performed and the mare becomes pregnant. “Tis treatment was developed by a Japanese veterinarian, Dr. Inoue. He shared it with our clinic, and we have become profcient with the technique. Tough it is useful for only a small subset of mares, it can make a life-changing diference for those owners. If we do appropriate case selection (mares that we suspect might have this problem) and select for mares that have the correct history and everything else is normal, we get about 60-70% of those mares pregnant within two covers.” NEW PROSTAGLANDIN TECHNIQUE

More recently, treatments with prostaglandin administered via the uterus (an easier approach) rather than laparoscopically have shown to be successful. A paper titled “Application of Misoprostol as a Treatment of Unexplained Infertility in Mares” published by researchers in Brazil in 2018 in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science reported that misoprostol (PGE1) can improve pregnancy rates in mares with unexplained infertility. Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), one of the prostaglandin E (PGE) hormones, which promotes oviduct dilatation and motility, reestablishing fertility in mares suspected of having blocked oviducts. It is known that topical application of PGE on the surface of the uterine tubes via laparoscopic procedure improves

pregnancy rates in barren mares with unexplained infertility. Te aim of this study was to see whether the treatment using misoprostol could be performed via intrauterine application. Te 22 mares used in this study had been barren for at least two years, with a history of unexplained infertility. Tese mares, age 5 to 26 years, were treated by a deep uterine horn application, using one Cytotec tablet (misoprostol) diluted in three milliliters of sterile water, in each horn, aiming the application as close as possible to the uterine tubes. Tis topical administration of the drug (a form of prostaglandin E that can cause the oviduct to dilate and increase oviduct contractions, which normally move ova down the tubes to the uterus) is through a fexible insemination pipette. After inserting the pipette through the cervix into the uterus, the veterinarian manually guides it transrectally to the uterine horn tip adjacent to the oviduct opening, then injects the misoprostol through the pipette onto the opening. Te theory is that the misoprostol will pass into the oviduct, causing the oviduct to contract, thus forcing the blockage out. Te researchers reported a 73% success rate in the 22 treated mares. Tese procedures were performed during the diestrous period, and the mares were bred in their next cycle. Pregnancy or an embryo was obtained from 15 of the 22 mares within the frst two cycles following treatment. Ten of 15 mares bred as embryo donors produced embryos in three subsequent cycles, and six of seven mares bred to carry became pregnant after treatment. Te researchers concluded that misoprostol therapy can be performed via the uterus, making easier and safer treatment of these mares. “Many people are now trying this new technique for resolving oviduct blockage,” said McCue. “Te concept of oviduct blockage is not new; people have been trying to address this issue for 40 years. Tis research from Brazil suggested that treatment of the oviduct

the oviduct better, to fertilize an egg that has been ovulated, and secondly, and possibly more important (since sperm can probably get by those masses) is to allow the embryo to pass down through the oviduct and through the junction into the uterus. Tis type of prostaglandin treatment is the newest therapy for oviduct blockage. “Oviduct blockage is very difcult to diagnose. When we rule out everything else, such as bacterial infection, post-mating endometritis, etc., and the

helpful for mares with unexplained infertility. But it is not an efective treatment for all infertile mares.” Now there are two noninvasive, less expensive, efective treatments. Flushing with saline is more difcult and expensive (around $800 to $1,000, compared to about $200 for the misoprostol procedure), but gives an additional beneft of being able to see inside the uterus and evaluate the health of the uterine lining in these infertile mares.
