From the EXECUTIVE CORNER TY Green CTBA BOARD MEMBER

CONDITIONS OF SALE FOR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA SALE

T

he CTBA Northern California Sale will be held Aug. 9 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. While last year’s sale was a success, the CTBA Board has been working toward making changes that will make this year’s event an even better experience for sellers, consignors, and buyers. One issue addressed was to obtain as much consistency as possible for the conditions of sale between the CTBA and Fasig-Tipton. While the conditions were similar before, some inconsistencies had the potential to create confusion. We approached Fasig-Tipton ofcials, who kindly granted permission for us to “appropriate” their conditions of sale. However, there are a few diferences, one of which is discussed below. Tose conditions will be printed in the sales catalog, and everyone is urged to read them. While they might look a bit daunting and there is the inevitable smattering of legal “mumbo jumbo” that lawyers (like me) require, they are a relatively easy read. We live in an information age, and if you are a sales participant, this is the information for the rules of the game—whether you read them or not. Te diference between Fasig-Tipton’s conditions of sale and the CTBA’s respects bone warranty. Te Fasig-Tipton conditions of sale require that, for 2-yearolds and horses of racing age, “any injury or disease to the bone structure materially afecting its suitability for racing” must either be announced at the time of the time of the sale or be revealed by x-rays

or a veterinarian certifcate placed in the sales repository. If the x-rays, certifcate, or auctioneer’s announcement disclose the defect, there is not a warranty. If the x-rays, certifcate, or announcement don’t disclose the defect, a limited warranty can come into efect. Yearlings are not covered by the Fasig-Tipton bone warranty. Te CTBA conditions of sale regarding bone warranty are diferent, and it is very important to be aware of that diference. First, the CTBA bone warranty includes yearlings. Second, while consignors are encouraged to provide x-rays for the repository, the majority of consignors at the Northern California sale historically have not. Because of that, the CTBA believes that the conditions of sale should be tailored to ft the reality of the Northern California sale. Te bone warranty at the CTBA Northern California Sale will work like this: If an x-ray or a veterinary certifcate is on fle and discloses the injury or diseased condition that would likely “materially and adversely afect the horse’s suitability for training and racing” (or if that condition is announced at the time of sale), the buyer purchases subject to that condition. In other words, there is no right of rejection. You bought it and it is yours, period. Te clear message is that before you buy a horse, check the repository. For those horses without x-rays or certificates on fle or if the x-rays do not disclose the disease or injury to the bone structure, the buyer may x-ray the horse within 24

hours (but before the horse leaves the sales ground). If that x-ray discloses a condition covered by the bone warranty, the buyer can reject the horse and cancel the sale. A dispute between the buyer and seller on this issue will be resolved by a panel of three veterinarians. It is important for the buyer to be aware that once the horse leaves the sales ground or 24 hours have passed, whichever occurs frst, there is no right of rejection, no matter what a later x-ray might show. Tis is a brief summary that I hope will help avoid any confusion about the sale’s bone warranty. Te process does require some attention and efort by the seller, consignor, and buyer, all of which fall under good business practices. We believe that this is fair to all parties and provides certainty for the sale’s process. I close as only a lawyer can. Tis is intended to be a summary for your assistance when reading the conditions of sale. It is not a substitute for the actual conditions found in the sales catalog. Tose printed conditions control and cover much more than bone warranties. If they are inconsistent with this summary, the printed conditions will control. Tose conditions might change between the time of this article and the time the conditions of sale are printed. You should read those conditions thoroughly (this is the type of thing I do when my motherin-law is visiting) and make sure you understand them. If after reading them, you need further information or clarifcation, please contact the CTBA.

MORVICH’S KENTUCKY DERBY CENTENNIAL Rich Strike gave racing a storybook tale in the 148th Kentucky Derby (G1) as the longest shot on the board winning for trainer Eric Reed and owner Rick Dawson (RED TR-Racing). Te 2022 running also marked 100 years since Morvich took the 48th running of the historic race, becoming the frst California-bred to win the Kentucky Derby. Unlike Rich Strike, Morvich went of as the 6-5 favorite in a feld half the size. Instead of a full feld of 20, Morvich faced nine others. He led from almost the very beginning, according to the chart, “as if he outclassed the others, was kept in the lead under hard restraint for the frst mile and drew away in the stretch to win under a pull.” Morvich won by 11⁄2 lengths under jockey Albert Johnson. Morvich, frst Cal-bred to win Kentucky Derby Johnson won the Derby twice, repeating in 1926 on Bubbling Over, and his mounts during his career included the mighty Exterminator. Johnson later became the trainer and racing manager for Bing Crosby, but he always maintained that Morvich was his favorite horse. Adolph Spreckels bred Morvich, a son of Runnymede—Hymir, by Dr. Leggo. Morvich showed early promise to trainer Bill Carroll, even though he had lumpy knees and a bad left ankle. Spreckels sold Morvich early in his 2-year-old season for $12,000 to trainer Max Hirsch, who in turn sold him for $30,000 to trainer Fred Burlew, who bought him for Ben Block. Morvich was undefeated as a 2-year-old, earning $115,234 that year and at one time as a juvenile successfully carrying 130 pounds. Without a prep race at 3, he still went favored in the Derby. It would be his last victory, as he was assigned staggering weights for his fnal three starts. Morvich stood at stud in Kentucky initially, returning to his native state in 1939 at age 20. He died at age 27 in 1946 and was inducted into the California Toroughbred Breeders Association Hall of Fame in 1988. Tree Cal-breds have followed Morvich as Kentucky Derby winners: Swaps in 1955, Decidedly in 1962, and California Chrome in 2014.

Granja Realeza takes the Valkyr Handicap at Hollywood Park

25 YEARS AGO Capitalizing on her earlier victory in the $111,400 Valkyr Handicap, California-bred GRANJA REALEZA made it two stakes in a row when she captured the $76,800 Melair Stakes June 7, 1997. Both races were at Hollywood Park, the May 17 Valkyr at 5 1⁄2 furlongs on the turf and the Melair at 6 1⁄2 furlongs on

A couple of races after he had won the 1971 Charles H. Strub Stakes, California-bred WAR HEIM developed suspensory trouble in his right front leg. Trainer Dale Landers laid him up for eight months, and War Heim rewarded Landers by taking the $75,000 Miller High Life Inglewood Handicap at Hollywood Park June 10, 1972. Racing wide throughout, War Heim and jockey Victor Tejada found a clear path on the outside to challenge pacesetter Kennedy Road in the fnal furlong of the 1 1⁄8-mile Inglewood. War Heim defeated Kennedy Road, with Figonero third. Landers trained War Heim for Hazel Huffman, whose husband, Herman, had purchased the colt for her when he was 5 months old. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Rio bred the 5-year-old son of Slipped Disc—Wheedle, by The Clan, and War Heim eventually earned $292,565.

A CHARM FOR PYFER JESSICA PYFER GETS FIRST CAREER STAKES WIN ABOARD BALLY’S CHARM

BY TRACY GANTZ

Readers of this magazine frst learned about Pyfer in the September 2019 issue, when regular contributor Emily Shields wrote about her as part of the ongoing “Focus on the Future” feature. Pyfer was exercising horses for Phil D’Amato, her stepfather and the 2018 California Trainer of the Year. “I would love to be a jockey,” Pyfer told Shields. Pyfer has turned that aspiration into a burgeoning career. For Mullins and owner/breeder Red Baron’s Barn and Vaya Con Suerte, she had won twice aboard Bally’s Charm and never fnished worse than fourth. “She knows him—she’s been on him every time, and she’s worked him every time,” said Mullins. Added Tim Cohen of Red Baron’s Barn, “She works so hard, and she’s done so much on the backstretch for a lot of our horses.” Both wins by Bally’s Charm came in Cal-bred competition at a mile on turf, and the gelding had run fourth in the listed Eddie Logan Stakes at the same distance and surface. He had tried nine furlongs once before, fnishing third. Six competed in the 11⁄8-mile Snow 16

ome things were meant to be, including jockey Jessica Pyfer getting her frst career stakes victory aboard a California-bred. Te Eclipse Award-winning apprentice jockey of 2021 had ridden Cal-bred Bally’s Charm in each of the gelding’s fve previous races, and trainer Jef Mullins wasn’t about to deviate from the plan in the $150,500 Snow Chief Stakes Presented by City National Bank at Santa Anita May 28.

Chief for 3-year-olds, with Bally’s Charm the 2-1 second choice behind even-money favorite and stakes winner Smuggler’s Run. Bally’s Charm likes to set the pace, and Pyfer let him ramble on the lead. No one challenged him early, as he completed the frst quarter in :24.11 and a half in :49.45. “I was waiting for some company to come up with me, and it never happened,” said Pyfer. lengths in 1:50.21. Royal ’n Rando, winner of the Silky Sullivan Stakes at Golden Gate Fields in his previous start, fnished second, with Smuggler’s Run third. Cohen was pleased that one of his family’s horses could be Pyfer’s frst stakes winner. “She’s a really great communicator and a good person,” he said. Bally’s Charm is by Roi Charmant— Ballydonnell Drive, by Arch. Cohen said that none of the mare’s frst six foals had reached the races, despite crossing her with diferent stallions. But Roi Charmant, owned by Dr. Bruce Zietz and standing at the Cohen family’s Rancho Temescal in 2018, proved to be the right match. “We tried Roi Charmant and then we stopped breeding her after that,” said Cohen. Te 15-year-old mare died two weeks before the Snow Chief. “She was out in a pasture with all of the other retired mares, and she started to founder,” Cohen explained. Bally’s Charm is Ballydonnell Drive’s legacy. Tough the gelding has been “a slow learner and achiever,” Cohen said, he now has a bright future.

Te promising Big Switch, racing for owner/breeder George Krikorian and trainer John Sadler, was one of those yet to try routing. Te betting public was not concerned, however, sending the daughter of fast-rising sire Mr. Big of at 7-10. Bettors could see only one other entrant in the race, the Steve Miyadi-trained Rose Maddox, at 5-2. Starting from the rail on the main track, Rose Maddox stumbled badly leaving the gate under Kyle Frey and trailed early. Big Switch, breaking just outside of her, was away smoothly for Juan Hernandez and settled in third behind the pacesetters It’s Simple and Everlys Girl. Racing slightly of the rail rounding the frst turn, Big Switch kept the pressure on It’s Simple down the backstretch, taking the lead into the far turn, and was in command approaching the quarter pole after quarter-mile fractions of :22.98, :47.17 and 1:12.25. Rose Maddox, recovering from her poor start while advancing along the rail, edged toward the outside rounding the turn and briefy looked like she might challenge Big Switch, but to no avail. Under slight right-handed urging, Big Switch came home 4 1⁄4 lengths ahead of Rose Maddox in a time of 1:44.87. It was another 10 1⁄4 lengths to third-place fnisher Youteyourhonor. Big Switch gave Hernandez, Santa Anita’s leading rider in a runaway, his fourth of fve victories on the day. Hernandez won four of the fve Golden State Series

Golden State Series—Fran’s Valentine Stakes

LITTLE SISTER SOARS

I

BY EMILY SHIELDS

n the last decade, few California-breds have been more popular than California champion Enola Gray, who won six stakes races over two seasons and was grade 1-placed. Te zippy gray mare’s frst foal has yet to race, but Enola Gray’s full sister Alice Marble has taken up the mantle.

Nick Alexander’s homebred Alice Marble won the $94,200 Wishing Well Stakes in February, ran second in the $200,500 Monrovia Stakes (G2T) in April, and most recently added the $101,000 Fran’s Valentine Stakes May 28. Te daughter of Grazen—Unsung Heroine, by More Tan Ready, was facing six rivals in the one-mile turf event for older distafers and was sent of as the 1-2 favorite. Under pilot Juan Hernandez, Alice Marble got away a step slowly and had a strange trip around the track. “It looked like she was being eased in the middle of the race,” Alexander said. “I thought maybe she bled.” Despite looking like he was getting shuffed around, Hernandez was making a calculated move. “He told me he took his foot of the pedal and was waiting for the right time,” Alexander said. “I told him he almost gave me a heart attack.” Alice Marble split horses, found room, and burst forward to win by three-quarters of a length over 13-1 Sassyserb and 43-1 shot Flying to the Line. 22

ALICE MARBLE, ENOLA GRAY’S SISTER, IS EXCELLING IN 2022 Two turns pose no problem for Alice Marble in Fran’s Valentine

“When the opportunity came and Juan put the pedal back down, she smoked them,” Alexander said. After the race, Hernandez explained, “I had the opportunity to come through and get some position, but I didn’t want to move too soon. I decided to stay over there and wait. I had a rough trip, but I just had to wait a little more. I found the space and I asked her, and she exploded.” Te win was Alice Marble’s ffth in 11 starts, with two seconds and a third. She has earnings of $321,180. “She’s such a nice flly,” Alexander said. “We had such high expectations for her, but she couldn’t break her maiden. How can a full sister to Enola Gray be so lackluster?” Alice Marble was in the barn of Steven Miyadi, and trainer Phil D’Amato had another Grazen named Desmond Doss. Alexander made the decision to switch trainers, with Alice Marble moving to D’Amato.

Earlier on the Fran’s Valentine card, Miyadi won the Tor’s Echo with Desmond Doss. “Tey both became really good horses,” Alexander said. He had to trust D’Amato when Alice Marble was entered in the Fran’s Valentine. Tough Alexander doubted her ability around two turns, D’Amato said she could do it. “It makes you humble and helps you realize you don’t know what you’re doing,” Alexander said. “You can get lucky when the genetic stars align, but you need good trainers, and Juan Hernandez has been awesome for us since Flavien Prat left. Juan has stepped up to fll that role.” Unsung Heroine is still in Alexander’s broodmare band and foaled another Grazen earlier this year. She has six winners from seven to race. “Life is good,” Alexander said. “Tese old mares are continuing to produce for us. I couldn’t be happier.”

TRIUMPHANT RETURN DESMOND DOSS SPARKLES IN RETURN FROM LAYOFF BY EMILY SHIELDS

O

wner Nick Alexander had a huge day at Santa Anita May 28, ultimately winning the $100,000 Fran’s Valentine Stakes with Alice Marble and running second in the $150,500 Melair Stakes with Rose Maddox. But before that proverbial icing on the cake, his homebred Desmond Doss kicked of the action with a win in the $100,000 Tor’s Echo Stakes.

“It doesn’t happen so often, so you’ve got to appreciate it when it does,” Alexander said of the banner day. Going to the post in the six-furlong race, Desmond Doss was the 4-1 third choice in a feld of fve that included graded stakesplaced Tigre Di Slugo and veteran Fashionably Fast, who was seeking his 10th lifetime win. Under jockey Juan Hernandez, Desmond Doss tracked the pace in third, 24

then rallied in the stretch to open up by 2 1⁄4 lengths at the wire. Tey stopped the clock in 1:09.70, with Fashionably Fast second, followed by Tigre Di Slugo, Good With People, and Moose Mitchell. “He was feeling really good, very sharp,” Hernandez said. “I worked him a few times and he was really good. I knew he was going to be ready for this race, and he showed up today.” Te win was Desmond Doss’ sixth in 18 starts, with two seconds and two thirds. Te son of Alexander’s prized stallion Grazen won the $100,000 Bertrando Stakes 11 months before at Los Alamitos, and he

was stakes-placed three times in 2021. But he was coming of a lengthy layof. Unraced since Oct. 17, when Desmond Doss ran ffth in the $102,000 California Flag Handicap, the gray 6-year-old shook of any rust to win. “He ran an uncharacteristically dull race in October, so we gave him plenty of time,” Alexander said. “He never left the barn, and (trainer) Steve (Miyadi) had him the whole time.” Alexander has had four generations of the female family, starting with the mare Reckless Rose, who raced in 1988. She produced Sunday’s Child, a winning daughter of Desert Wine who in turn gave Alexander the stakes-winning Malek mare Malley Girl, the dam of Desmond Doss. Malley Girl scored in the $81,150 Cover Gal Stakes in 2005, winning three times before retirement in 2007. Now 19, Malley Girl has had seven winners from eight starters, including dual stakes-placed Grazenette and stakes-placed Shy Carmelita. “She had a tragic birth this year and lost the colt,” Alexander said. “It would have been a full brother to Desmond Doss. She has a handsome full yearling brother and is back in foal to Grazen for 2023.” Desmond Doss didn’t debut until his sophomore season, winning in just his second lifetime start against maiden special weight company. He has added three allowance optional claiming races in his career and has run well on both dirt and turf, sprinting and running long. “I think he really wanted to go in the Crystal Water,” Alexander said of Miyadi and the one-mile turf event that happened some 30 minutes before the Tor’s Echo. “But he didn’t have enough time.”

On the fnal day of the annual Gold Rush weekend at Golden Gate Fields, the 72-year-old conditioner won both one-mile turf events on the card for 3-year-old California-breds. He saddled the Cole Ranch Partners’ flly Ellamira for victory in the $75,900 Campanile Stakes as well as Royal ’n Rando in the $75,000 Silky Sullivan Stakes for longtime owners and breeders Larry and Marianne Williams. Both stakes are part of the Golden State Series. “Nope, I’ve never done that before,” said Specht, who is of to a fabulous start in 2022, winning at a better than 25% clip through May 12. “I’d probably had a chance to do it back when they used to run all the Cal Cup races on the same day, but I never did. “It makes you feel good,” he said in reference to both his hot start and the dual stakes triumph. “It’s always fun to win anytime. To win both stakes races—it’s a pretty good accomplishment.” Royal ’n Rando and Ellamira were both ridden to victory in come-frombehind style by veteran turf specialist Frank Alvarado, Specht’s go-to rider at Golden Gate for many years. efore he turned 16, Tom Beckerle was already working on the outskirts of the racing industry. He began by selling tip sheets at Los Alamitos near where he grew up and fell in love with the racehorses, as so many do. “Tat’s how I got started,” Beckerle recalled. “As I got older, I got involved with a syndicate.” One syndicate of horse owners turned into many, and Beckerle was recently rewarded for his investment via Tom’s Regret. Tat California-bred 2-yearold flly triumphed in the $179,785 Kentucky Juvenile Stakes at Churchill Downs in Kentucky May 5.

Long before Tom’s Regret, Beckerle was trying his hand in the game. Te frst horse that Beckerle bought into was Set Play, a Florida-bred flly trained by Peter Miller. Set Play broke her maiden frst out, won the 2007 Del Mar Debutante Stakes (G1) three months later and ultimately ran 11th in the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at odds of 41-1. “I got to go to the Breeders’ Cup with the very frst horse I ever got involved with,” Beckerle said. “It was diluted because you didn’t own a lot of the horse, but you got to get in the winner’s circle picture more or less.” Although Set Play never again reached top competi-

tion, the fre within Beckerle was already burning. Fifteen years later he has become much more involved in racing, both via partnerships and on his own. “I bumped into Terry Lovingier one day back when his Lovacres Ranch was still in Murrieta,” Beckerle said. “I had a horse on layup there from another partnership, and he offered for me to get involved with some of his horses. I’m not a big-time player in the game and I was just trying to get lucky, so getting in with him felt like I could learn the knowledge to pick out some winners myself.” Beckerle partnered on My Fiona, a California-bred daughter of Ghostzaper—A Vision in Gray, by Two Punch. Winner of six in 16 starts, My Fiona earned $478,743. She was named California’s champion 2-year-old female in 2014 and has since gone on to acclaim as the dam of stakes winners Fi Fi Pharoah and Finneus. In 2021, Finneus was named champion Calbred 2-year-old male, and My Fiona was the California Broodmare of the Year. “I started buying more and more horses,” Beckerle said. “First one, then two, then part of two more, then part of four. Over the years I’ve had a couple of winners, but not a lot.” Beckerle is still involved with stakes winner Fi Fi Pharoah, a daughter of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, and last year he was a partner on Cal-bred champion 2-year-old female

DIAGNOSING COLIC KNOWING THE SIGNS AND WHAT THEY INDICATE BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS

T

he term colic simply means abdominal pain or discomfort. Te pain might be caused by a digestive problem, irritation or blockage of the digestive tract, or a problem with some other internal organ. Uterine contractions in a foaling mare can also cause colic. Te most common cause of abdominal discomfort, however, involves the digestive tract.

36

Signs of colic include obvious abdominal pain—often shown by the horse pawing, rolling, sweating, looking around at the fank, etc. If you check vital signs, the horse will have an elevated heart rate. Mild abdominal pain might be hard to detect unless you know your horse well and can tell when he isn’t quite himself. A horse with mild abdominal pain could be just a little dull, slightly restless, or of feed. He might get up and down more than usu-

al or spend too much time lying down. He could lie with his head tucked around toward his belly or fank. If he’s out at pasture with herdmates, the horse may go of by himself, stand in a corner away from the other horses, or show abnormal posture. He might stretch or stand with his head high and front legs forward, with hind feet farther back than normal, trying to ease discomfort or gas pains in his abdomen. If he acts strange or looks dull, it is

important to check his vital signs and abdominal sounds. Check heart rate, respiration rate, and temperature. A horse with a compromised gut (or a serious problem with some other internal organ) might be going into shock; he will be sweating but cold, with subnormal temperature. Use a stethoscope or your ear pressed to his side to listen for rumbling and gurgling gut sounds. Constant rumbling might mean an overactive gastrointestinal tract. Absence of gut sounds (ominous silence, except for the gentle “whish” of lung sounds as the horse breathes) could indicate a blockage or shutdown gut. In that situation, you need veterinary assistance. Keep the horse under observation even if he just has mild colic because it could worsen, depending on what is causing it. Sometimes a horse with muscle pain, such as cramping in the large muscles of the hindquarters, will show some of the same pawing and sweating signs as a case of colic. Any horse showing signs of discomfort could need veterinary attention, but until the veterinarian arrives, you can often make a diference by how you handle and treat that horse. First, however, you need to determine whether the horse is sufering from colic (abdominal pain) or muscle pain due to muscle cramps. In an emergency situation, how you treat these conditions will be diferent, so you need to determine what the problem is. Muscle cramping (tied-up muscles) associated with exercise is often mistaken for colic because the horse is uncomfortable and might paw and sweat. But if you try to walk him—as you would for a colic case—you will make his condition worse. Tus, you need to make a quick determination regarding how to handle the situation. If the horse is in severe pain and trying to drop to the ground and roll violently, traditional wisdom is to keep him on his feet if possible. Violent rolling, especially if the gut is distended by

gas with part of it too full and part of it empty, can cause the gut to fip over on itself, creating a fatal twist that shuts of blood supply to the gut. A normal horse with normal gut fll, rolling to rid himself of fies, scratch his back, or relieve itchiness from sweat

after a workout, will not sufer a twisted gut. Violent rolling when the gut is already compromised is what can lead to problems, so the goal is to keep the colicky horse on his feet. Tis is usually accomplished by keeping him moving—walking him around until

Listening for gut sounds is of primary importance as is keeping records of the normal gut-sound rate. After checking gut sounds, along with respiration rate and heart rate, walk the horse around and check again to see if those rates are heading back toward the horse’s normal

A horse that has no gut sounds means that the (digestive) tract is shut down, which is not a good sign.” — Dr. Cid Hayden

“In a horse that has colic, the risks are greater. Te horse already has abdominal pain and may have a lot of pressure due to a distended bowel. Tere may be an impaction or a sore spot that would cause the horse to react if the veterinarian bumps into it. Palpating a horse for a colic examination may occasionally create more potential problems. “When trying to check the internal

the veterinarian arrives to diagnose the problem more fully and hopefully resolve it with appropriate treatment. If the horse is stressed and tired, however, you don’t need to keep him moving constantly. If he wants to rest, let him rest. It’s only important to keep him on his feet when the spasms of pain hit and he wants to drop to the ground and roll. One of the primary techniques used by veterinarians for colic diagnosis is palpation per rectum. Te veterinarian gently reaches into the rectum with a well-lubricated plastic glove/sleeve to try to feel some of the adjacent portions of the digestive tract and other organs to help determine what is going in inside the horse. Dr. Cid Hayden, an equine veterinarian at Salmon, Idaho, notes that this procedure is not without risk. Te rectal tissues of a horse are delicate and bowel contractions are very strong. “If the horse is moving around and straining against the intruding arm, the delicate rectal tissues could be injured,” Hayden said. “If done correctly and carefully, the risk is minimal, but there is always a chance for mild irritation and infammation of these tissues, or even rectal tears. Tose can be very serious, requiring emergency abdominal surgery to correct.

It is important to check all the vital signs: A horse with a serious internal problem will be sweating but cold and have a subnormal temperature

areas, no one has an arm long enough to feel the entire abdomen of a horse. You are usually palpating the rear one-third at best. You can’t feel everything that you need to check. You are trying to feel for an abnormality or for a normal organ that’s not where it’s supposed to be. “In those situations, it’s not so much that you can feel what’s wrong, but the normal anatomy is not where it is supposed to be—or if it’s missing, where did it go? “Some of the examination for colic, per rectum, trying to fgure out what is wrong inside the horse, takes a lot of interpretation—based on what the normal anatomy would have been. If you are not very close to an equine hospital, if it’s a serious case where the horse needs surgical correction, this means hauling the horse somewhere else. Often I am trying to decide early on if surgery (or a more lengthy and involved diagnostic procedure) is needed. We have to make these determinations as quickly as possible to give the horse a chance.” In a hospital setting, colic diagnosis could include a laparoscopic examination fank surgery, or major abdominal surgery. Other techniques available at a larger clinic might also involve ultrasound. But out in the feld or at a small clinic, tools and techniques are often limited to things like trans-rectal palpation, listening to gut sounds with a stethoscope, and doing a belly tap. Te basic examination will include checking heart rate, respiration rate, capillary refll time (checking the gums), etc. to see if the horse is in shock and, if so, how severely. “Color of the gums and mucous membranes and other color changes can also be clues regarding whether the horse is becoming toxic from endotoxin release or other problems,” said Hayden. “A horse that has no gut sounds means that the tract is shut down, which is not a good sign.” A belly tap, which involves sticking a sterile needle through the belly wall to obtain fuid that can be examined, can

TREATING TO RELIEVE DISCOMFORT It’s generally best to wait for the veterinarian to come diagnose and treat a colicky horse, since giving a drug like Banamine (funixin meglumine) to ease the pain could mask some of the signs, making it harder for the veterinarian to assess effectively what’s going on with that horse. If, however, it might be some time before the veterinarian can get there, administering this drug may help keep the horse from rolling violently and damaging himself. Your veterinarian might prescribe Banamine that you can keep on hand for emergencies. It is important to administer it correctly, however. Banamine is most effective when given intravenously. If you don’t know how to give an IV injection, it’s safer to give it orally rather than intramuscularly to avoid possible risk for injection-site abscesses and serious side effects such as clostridial myositis, which can be very diffcult to treat, and life-threatening. There are oral pastes, but in an emergency you can also give the injectable form by mouth (squirted into the mouth) to be absorbed that way. Discuss this ahead of time with your veterinarian to be prepared for colic emergencies.

tell the veterinarian several things. “We check for white blood cells and infammatory cells, fbrin, etc.,” said Hayden. “We can also do some other tests on that fuid to get an idea about how serious the horse’s condition might be.” One of the things the veterinarian will want to know is whether the horse is passing manure. A horse with colic

can pass a little manure at frst and then cease, if there is something serious farther up the tract causing blockage or shutdown. An examination of the manure could also give clues. “If it’s very dry and frm, or loose and watery, this can be an indication of problems,” said Hayden. “Sometimes the manure might have sand in it.” A history of the horse and what it has been eating can also be very helpful. “One problem we encounter fairly often is change of feed,” Hayden said. “An abrupt change, overeating on certain kinds of feeds, or consuming moldy feed or toxic plants can lead to digestive problems and colic. “I tell people that if they see a colic situation, they should check vital signs. Have a stethoscope and know how to use it. You also need to know what the horse’s normal heart rate and respiration rate are and listen to bowel sounds. Even though you might not be able to diferentiate among types of breathing and types of pulses and types of gut sounds, you can count bowel contractions and gurgles—how many per minute. “If you have a record what his normal heart rate, respiration rate, and gut sound rate are, this gives something to compare to in an emergency. You can check those three things and after you walk the horse around check again. If those vital signs aren’t going back toward normal after an hour, call the veterinarian. “Another thing horsemen should learn how to do—which is helpful in any serious condition—is take capillary refll. Lift the horse’s lip, fnd a pink spot on the gum (it will be pink in a normal, healthy horse and dark and red/purple in a horse with shock), and press it for a few seconds with your thumb. Take your thumb away and see how quickly it turns pink again. It should turn pink in two seconds or less. If it takes three seconds, this indicates a little dehydration or shock, four to fve is mild dehydration or mild shock, and seven seconds or longer indicates severe dehydration or severe shock.”

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through May 30, 2022.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
