It Pays to Be Cal-bred

n this monthly editorial I frequently mention the ever-growing importance/dependence on California-breds and the lucrative purses and opportunities that are currently offered. Never have these restricted purse benefits been as evident as in the past year. As depicted in the chart below, total restricted purses have risen sharply and are now approaching $19.5 million. Tese numbers account for all first- through third-place finishes as

tracked by CTBA for breeder award purposes. While restricted stakes purses were back to roughly $5 million, the rise in state-bred overnight races fueled the increase in restricted purses earned. Te Cal-bred maiden special weight races accounted for nearly $8 million, and more than half of the total amount of restricted purses earned for breeders. Tere were 159 restricted maiden special weight winners and a total of 207 when

factoring in open maiden special weight races. Tese increases have put some stress on the maiden bonus program, which the CTBA and TOC have jointly addressed and will continue to monitor. Te upward trends in restricted purse opportunities, added with the stability with the incentive award funding through handle, bode well for the future of those investing in breeding and racing in California. It continues to Pay to Be Cal-bred.

Trainer Simon Callaghan bought the colt as agent from Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stables. Paul and Zillah Reddam bred the youngster out of their Cal-bred In Excess mare Too Much Excess. Square Eddie, owned by the Reddams and now pensioned, is also the sire of How About Zero and Don’t Sell, both Cal-bred stakes winners out of Too Much Excess raced by the Reddams. Mucho Unusual, the 2020 California-bred Horse of the Year, has been retired from racing. Trainer Tim Yakteen tweeted in mid-March that the decision had been made to retire the 6-year-old mare. She was to be shipped to Kentucky to be bred, though a stallion decision was not immediately made. George Krikorian bred and raced Mucho Unusual, a multiple graded winner and multiple Cal-bred champion. Te daughter of Mucho Macho Man—Not Unusual, by Unusual Heat, earned $957,415 in fve seasons of racing, winning eight of 24 races, with fve seconds and fve thirds. At 2 in 2018, Mucho Unusual broke her maiden and ran second in the $100,000 Generous Portion Stakes and $200,345 Golden State Juvenile Mucho Unusual Fillies Stakes. Te following year she won the $201,755 San Clemente Stakes (G2T) and $200,351 California Cup Oaks. She fnished second in the American Oaks (G1T) and third in the Autumn Miss Stakes (G3T) and was voted Cal-bred champion 3-year-old female. Mucho Unusual had her best season at 4 in 2020. She captured the $300,500 Rodeo Drive Stakes (G1T) and $101,500 Robert J. Frankel Stakes (G3T) and placed in the Gamely Stakes (G1T), Buena Vista Stakes (G2T), and Solana Beach Stakes. In addition to her Horse of the Year title, Mucho Unusual was voted that year’s Cal-bred champion older female and turf horse. Last year Mucho Unusual added the $98,000 Megahertz Stakes (G3T) and placed in two more graded stakes. She fnished her career with a fourth in the $202,500 Buena Vista this past March 5. “We are sad to see her leave the barn,” said Yakteen in his tweet. “She has been so special to and for all of us.”

DEL MAR PURSES INCREASE, MAIDEN BONUS EXPANDED Del Mar is projecting purses above $25 million for its 31day summer meeting, an average daily purse payout of more than $800,000. In addition, the track is expanding its maiden bonus to include qualifed runners of all ages on dirt. Previously known as the juvenile bonus and limited to 2-year-olds, Del Mar’s maiden bonus will increase those purses by 25%. The qualifying events must be on dirt and for straight maidens, California-bred maidens, or maiden-claiming races at $62,500 or more. In addition, the horse must come from the barn of a trainer who has no more than 60 horses stabled in Southern California. Del Mar also announced increases in purses for 21 of its major stakes as well as an increase in overnight purses by a blended rate of 15%. The track’s “Ship & Win” program will increase to a $5,000 starter bonus and a 50% purse supplement for dirt runners and a $4,000 bonus and 40% supplement for turf runners. Examples of the increase in overnight purses include top-level allowance races now $86,000, up from $76,000; a $32,000 claiming race now $51,000, up from $45,000; and a $20,000 maiden-claiming race now $30,000, up from $25,000. Purses for overnight stakes will be $100,000, rising from $80,000. The stakes schedule is headed by the $1 million TVG Pacifc Classic (G1), slated for Sept. 3. In addition, Del Mar will continue to offer eight stakes for California-breds and California-sired runners as part of the Golden State Series. Del Mar’s summer meeting runs from July 22-Sept. 11.

Tiger Dad Wins Phoenix Gold Cup

Joe Bravo, a longtime East Coast-based jockey who successfully moved his operation to Southern California last summer, has won Santa Anita’s 2022 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award via votes of jockeys nationwide. Born in Long Branch, N.J., in 1971, “Jersey Joe” Bravo won 13 riding titles at Monmouth Park and nine titles at the Meadowlands. With California-based jockey agent Matt Nakatani, Bravo immediately did well last summer. One of his major victories came aboard California-bred None Above the Law in the $254,000 Del Mar Derby Presented by Caesars Sportsbook (G2T) at Del Mar. A great judge of pace and especially known for his prowess on turf, Bravo is closing in on 5,600 victories and purse earnings of $200 million in a career that dates back to his debut at age 17 in 1988. A third-generation rider, Bravo got his biggest career win at Santa Anita aboard Blue Prize in the 2019 Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1). Joe Bravo “It really is an honor to now be part of this circle of riders, joining all of these guys that I grew up with or grew up underneath,” said Bravo. “I was lucky enough to win the East Coast version of the Woolf Award, the Mike Venezia Award in 2018, and now to be honored here on the West Coast, you don’t know what an honor this is.” Presented annually by Santa Anita since 1950, the Woolf Award can only be given to an individual jockey once. It is named for the late Hall of Fame jockey who rode regularly at Santa Anita and piloted Seabiscuit to defeat Triple Crown Champion War Admiral in a match race at Pimlico Race Course Nov. 1, 1938. The award recognizes those riders whose careers and personal character garner esteem for the individual and the sport of Thoroughbred racing.

Chuck Winner Chuck Winner, former chairman of the California Horse Racing Board and co-owner of a host of graded stakes winners, died March 24 at age 81. He was an internationally recognized expert in public affairs, crisis communications, and campaign management. Serving on the CHRB from 2012-19, fve of those years as chairman, Winner guided the racing commission through diffcult times. His calm and knowledgeable leadership was especially benefcial during the winter of 2019, when a rash of equine fatalities at Santa Anita attracted worldwide scrutiny. Winner led the push for improved safety measures to protect horses and riders. As a Thoroughbred owner, Winner ensured that his horses had good second careers. He was a partner in California-bred Liberian Freighter, who won six stakes, including the 2010 Oak Tree Mile Stakes (G2T) and 2011 Arcadia Stakes (G2T). Upon retirement, the son of Bertrando developed into an accomplished hunter-jumper. Cal-bred Bolchina was Winner’s frst stakes winner. He owned the 1985 daughter of Bolger with the late Bob Wald. Bolchina won the 1987 Bustles and Bows Stakes and 1988 La Habra Stakes. Though he rarely bred horses, Winner kept Bolchina her entire life, and he said she lived well into her 20s. Winner excelled at selecting good horses of racing age, especially in Europe. He once recalled traveling to a racetrack in southern France to examine Flamboyant in torrential rain. He owned Flamboyant with David Bienstock, and the gelding won the 2016 San Marcos Stakes (G2T) and earned more than $1 million. Paddy Gallagher trained many of Winner’s horses, including Flamboyant. The two went back to when Gallagher was an assistant to trainer and Hall of Fame jockey Bill Shoemaker. Shoemaker trained 1995 California Derby (G3T) winner Fine n’ Majestic for Winner and partners. Gallagher trained millionaire Magical Fantasy and multiple graded winner Domestic Dispute for Winner, Bienstock, and Paul Mandabach. Winner was long involved with many political campaigns, beginning when he worked on the California gubernatorial campaign of Pat Brown. Winner worked on John Kennedy’s presidential campaign in 1960 and later for the gubernatorial campaign of Jerry Brown, Pat Brown’s son. Gov. Jerry Brown appointed Winner to the CHRB. Winner is survived by his wife, Annie, and four children: Justyn, Ethan, Nicole, and Zach.

Tiger Dad, a California-bred son of Smiling Tiger, won the $100,000 Phoenix Gold Cup at Turf Paradise March 11. Ridden by Karlo Lopez, Tiger Dad raced in ffth early in the six-furlong event, had to go extremely wide on the turn, and got up to win by a halflength in 1:08.64. Robertino Diodoro trains Tiger Dad for Robert Rosette’s Rosette Racing. Mark Devereaux and Scott and Mark Gross bred the 6-year-old gelding, who is out of the Unusual Heat mare Q T Shae. Tiger Dad raised Tiger Dad his lifetime earnings to $432,875. Previously, he won the 2021 Luke Kruytbosch Stakes at Turf Paradise and the 2020 Tor’s Echo Stakes at Santa Anita and placed in two other stakes. Rosette Racing claimed Tiger Dad from his breeders for $50,000 at Del Mar Nov. 12, 2021

Swiss Yodeler, a leading California sire for many years, died Feb. 4 at Huntertown Farm near Versailles, Ky., where he had been retired since 2020. Offcially 28 by The Jockey Club standards, Swiss Yodeler was just four days from his actual 28th birthday. A son of Eastern Echo—Drapeau, by Raja Baba, Swiss Yodeler spent the early part of his stallion career at Pepper Oaks Farm, later standing at Harris Farms and Lovacres Ranch before being moved to West Virginia. His offspring include California-bred Thor’s Echo, the 2006 Eclipse Award-winning sprinter and winner of that year’s TVG Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1). Thor’s Echo was also voted champion Cal-bred sprinter that season, and he earned a total of $2,461,490. Trainer Mike Harrington bought Swiss Yodeler for $60,000 for owner Heinz Steinmann at the 1995 Keeneland September yearling sale. Trained by Harrington, Swiss Yodeler won fve stakes at 2 in 1996, including the Hollywood Futurity (G1), Hollywood Juvenile Championship (G2) and Best Pal Stakes (G3). He placed in a total of nine other stakes and earned $761,442 during four seasons of racing. Swiss Yodeler excelled as a sire of 2-year-olds and led California’s frst-crop sires by progeny earnings in 2002. He was the state’s overall leading sire in 2006. Swiss Yodeler’s other runners include Tilde and Swiss Lake Yodeler, back-to-back champion Cal-bred 2-year-old females of 2012-13, as well as stakes winners Hi Ho Yodeler, Dave the Dude, Swiss Diva, and Oberwald.

Strike the Tiger, a California-bred stakes winner at Royal Ascot who had become a beloved stable pony at trainer Wesley Ward’s barn, died in a tragic barn fre at Keeneland March 6. Lightning during an electrical storm struck a service pole that led into the barn. Though most of the horses in the barn were saved, Strike the Tiger, 5-yearold Modesto, and an unraced 2-year-old gelding perished. Ward bred Strike the Tiger, a 2007 son of Tiger Ridge—R Lucky Strike, by In Excess, with Mitchell Dutko and Ray Sainz. In just his second start, Strike the Tiger won the 2009 Windsor Castle Stakes, becoming the frst American-trained horse to win a race at Royal Ascot. Strike the Tiger also won the 2009 Chenery Stakes at Colonial Downs and placed in the 2010 Transylvania Stakes (G3T) at Keeneland en route to earning $209,048. After Strike the Tiger’s racing career was over, Ward turned him into a stable pony. The gelding accompanied Ward’s horses to Royal Ascot each year.

Martin Pedroza piloted Willa B Awesome in both races for trainer Walther Solis. Terry Lovingier bred the daughter of Awesome Gambler—Cause I’m Tricky, by Nineelevan, and owned her with Phil Daniels, Patsy London, and John Winters. Willa B Awesome ultimately earned $648,896. She was sold at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale in foal to Medaglia d’Oro for for $875,000 to Katsumi Yoshida of Japan.

25 YEARS AGO California-bred FREE HOUSE defeated Silver Charm in the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby (G1) April 5, 1997. After running second to the future Eclipse Award winner in the Feb. 8 San Vicente Stakes (G3), Free House beat Silver Charm in the March 16 San Felipe Stakes (G2).

The two met again in the 11⁄8-mile Santa Anita Derby, with Free House and jockey Kent Desormeaux edging Silver Charm and jockey Gary Stevens by a head in 1:47.60. John Toffan and Trudy McCaffery bred and raced Free House, a son of Smokester—Fountain Lake, by Vigors. Paco Gonzalez trained the colt, who went on to place in all three legs of the Triple Crown, win the 1998 Pacifc Classic (G1) and 1999 Santa Anita Handicap (G1), and ultimately earn $3,178,971. Free House was voted Calbred Horse of the Year in 1997 and 1998.

50 YEARS AGO SOLAR SALUTE won seven stakes in 1972, the biggest being the Santa Anita Derby April 1. The California-bred had taken the Los Feliz Stakes and San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita early in the year, adding the Golden Bear Stakes at Golden Gate Fields and Santa Anita’s San Felipe Handicap prior to the 11⁄8-mile Santa Anita Derby. Under jockey Lafft Pincay Jr., Solar Salute defeated Quack by three-quarters of a length in 1:473⁄5, with Cal-bred Royal Owl, a stellar 2-year-old the previous year, fnishing third. Louis Glauburg trained Solar Salute, a son of Windsor Ruler—Solecco, by Solarium II, for owner/breeders Mr. and Mrs. John J. Elmore. Following the Santa Anita Derby, Solar Salute added the El Dorado Handicap at Hollywood Park and the La Jolla Mile Handicap at Del Mar. He earned a total of $308,889.

After a couple of years’ hiatus due to the pandemic, California again celebrated Ag Day March 23 at the California Capitol. As it has in the past, the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association took part, bringing information to educate legislators about the importance of the Thoroughbred industry to the state’s agricultural economy. The CTBA’s booth included a mare and foal, always a popular attraction. This year CTBA Vice Chairperson George Schmitt provided the mare, California-bred Tip Top Lady, and her Fullbridled colt, who reside at Daehling Ranch. Julia Daehling and her husband, Justin Oldfeld, own Daehling Ranch. Oldfeld, who is also a CTBA board member, and CTBA Event Coordinator Christy Chapman represented the CTBA at the booth and met with legislators.

After two graded stakes wins and a narrow loss in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1T), the popular gelding has been honored as not only California’s champion turf male, champion sprinter, and champion older male, but Horse of the Year as well.

California and then the B-team up north to Golden Gate, he was among the ones who went up north to (trainer) Steve Miyadi. He didn’t have a sibling who was a big achiever yet, so that worked against him.” After having Lieutenant Dan for three weeks, Miyadi made a phone call. Alexander recalled, “He said, ‘I think you made a mistake with this one. He belongs down south.’ ” Miyadi’s assessment came with a caveat: He still wanted to train Lieutenant Dan. Tird in his December 2018 debut, Lieutenant Dan broke his maiden at Santa Anita Jan. 13, 2019, by a whopping eight lengths. “He was impressive when he broke his maiden,” Alexander said. “Te biggest mistake we ever made was gelding him, but it seemed like the thing to do at the time. He might not have had the same power that he does now anyway.” Lieutenant Dan had his frst championship season as a sophomore, winning an allowance race and a pair of California-bred stakes—the $200,702 Echo Eddie Stakes and the $147,000

Real Good Deal Stakes—and placing in three other stakes. Tat earned him the 2019 Cal-bred 3-year-old male title. He added the $102,500 Sensational Star Stakes as a 4-year-old before going to the sidelines for more than a year. “Full credit to Steve,” Alexander said. “Te horse had a tendon. Steve kept him the whole time and wouldn’t send him to the farm, and that was fne with me. He really loves that horse.” Tat love went a long way. Tirteen months after going to the sidelines, Lieutenant Dan made his 2021 debut in allowance company at Del Mar. Sent of as the favorite against eight rivals, Lieutenant Dan and jockey Geovanni Franco dueled quickly for the lead and opened up in the stretch, winning the fve-furlong turf sprint by 11⁄2 lengths. Lieutenant Dan tried graded company for the frst time Aug. 22, going to the post in the $101,500 Green Flash Handicap (G3T). He faced graded winners Collusion Illusion and Gregorian Chant but ultimately put them all away, with fellow Cal-bred Give Me the Lute fnishing 21⁄4 lengths back second. “Te Green Flash was impressive with a very fast time,” Alexander said. “Te way he strode away in the last sixteenth

of a mile was visually impressive.” Te $202,000 Eddie D Stakes (G2T) at Santa Anita came next. Te top flly Charmaine’s Mia and Kentucky shipper Snapper Sinclair made the feld interesting, but Lieutenant Dan won again, streaking down the hillside turf course to score by a half-length. “He handled the race down the hill nicely,” Alexander said. Te $920,000 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) was next. For the frst time all season, Lieutenant Dan did not go favored. He was facing international shippers such as Emaraaty Ana, A Case of You, and defending Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner Glass Slippers, as well as top-class runners Kimari, Extravagant Kid, and the wickedly quick Golden Pal. Te last-named already had a win in the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2T) to his credit. When the gates opened, Golden Pal burst forth, taking a commanding lead from the outset. Lieutenant Dan tracked in second, and while he couldn’t get closer to Golden Pal than 11⁄4 lengths at the wire, he held the rest of the feld at bay by more than three lengths. “Irad Ortiz on Golden Pal shot out of that gate like they were spring loaded,” Alexander said. “When you spot a horse two lengths in a fve-furlong race and no one is helping with the pace, that’s pretty tough.” Alexander had put up a $100,000 supplemental fee to get Lieutenant Dan into the Breeders’ Cup “because I didn’t put up the $500 when he was a baby,” he explained. Despite the loss, in which Lieutenant Dan earned $170,000, Alexander was tremendously proud. “Te pressure was on because of the money I put up, but he ran well,” Alexander said. “And in the progression of the races over the year, each one just got better and better.” Lieutenant Dan fnished the season with three wins—two graded—in four starts for earnings of $407,720, elevating his overall record to eight wins, four seconds, and four thirds in 17 starts. Te homebred has earned $833,740. “He’s such an interesting horse because nothing bothers him,” Alexander said. “He can be between horses, or between a horse and the rail, and he just fnds a way to win.” Te owner noted that in the 2019 Real Good Deal, Lieutenant Dan was dueling on the rail with California champion 2-year-old male Cruel Intention and refused to fold despite Cruel Intention inching away on the turn without urging. Lieutenant Dan fought back and subsequently “buried” his rival despite looking beaten, proving his grit and mettle. Lieutenant Dan is back in training for a 2022 season. “We’re taking it very, very slowly,” Alexander said. “He started jogging (in February), and Steve said he’s ready to start working an eighth. We’re going to get a little more serious with him.” While he waits to see whether Lieutenant Dan can top his Horse of the Year season, Alexander has another top prospect in the wings. “We have a yearling full brother by the name of Butch O’Hare,” Alexander said. “He has the same presence, the same eye, and shows it in the way he handles himself.” Dam Excusabull now has eight winners from eight to race, and a superstar of a son in Lieutenant Dan. www.ctba.com ❙ April 2022 ❙ CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED

“We rate every baby when they are born, and he was a top three horse,” Lovingier said. “In fact, he was our number one pick.” Finneus, a son of Lovingier’s stallion Stay Tirsty and the multiple stakes-winning Ghostzapper mare My Fiona, had to live up to a lot of hype. He topped the sale when purchased by Naseer Fasihuddin for $200,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton California fall yearling sale. Lovingier and Amanda Navarro bought back in before Finneus debuted. Rarely do sale-toppers make back their purchase prices and more, but Finneus did so in spades. After going into training with Walther Solis, Finneus started his career at Santa Anita with a third-place effort sprinting 41∕2 furlongs May 9. On that day, he outran future standout stakes horse Mackinnon. With experience under his belt, Finneus broke his maiden next out on the same track, winning over five furlongs despite bumping a rival at the start. Jockey Flavien Prat was aboard for the victory. Finneus ran second behind Pappacap in the $200,500 Best Pal Stakes (G2) at Del Mar, then second again to Pinehurst in the $300,500 Runhappy Del Mar Futurity (G1), despite being a 38-1 longshot. Finneus finally put it all together in stakes 22

Behind him ran Slow Down Andy, who came back to take the $300,000 Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) next out, and Fast Draw Munnings, who ultimately won the $192,000 California Cup Derby. “He’s still learning,” Lovingier said of Finneus. “It’s amazing because he’s just so big, so he’s probably going to get even better this year.” Finneus finished the 2021 season with two wins, three seconds, and a third in seven starts for earnings of $266,366. He finished second in the $102,000 King Glorious Stakes Dec. 12, then came right back five weeks later to run third in Fast Draw Munnings’ Cal Cup after a bad break and rough trip. t’s not every year that a breeder produces two California champions from his or her operation, but Terry Lovingier did just that in 2021 with At the Spa and Finneus.

At the Spa was named champion 2-yearold female after a season that saw her win three of ﬁve starts for earnings of $165,580. Te daughter of Outwork—Spa Creek, by Smoke Glacken, is gearing up for a 2022 debut and the chance to expand on her already glittering career. At the Spa—who races for Lovingier, Saul Carrillo, and Tom Beckerle—is the only foal for her stakes-placed dam. Lovingier bought Spa Creek, then 8 years old, for $15,000 at the 2018 Keeneland January mixed sale and bred her to Outwork. “Spa Creek had this ﬁlly, then got back in foal to Stay Tirsty,” Lovingier said. “Ten the weirdest thing happened: She had a heart attack and passed away. Luckily, At the Spa was already weaned when it happened.” 24

At the Spa originally went through the 2020 Fasig-Tipton California fall yearling sale, but she did not meet her reserve following a high bid of $37,000. She went into training with Jorge Periban and was no secret before her career debut. At the Spa carried her dam’s banner well in the 41∕2-furlong dash at Santa Anita May 7, scoring by a whopping seven lengths as a heavy favorite under jockey Tyler Baze. Brought back in the $100,000 Fasig-Tipton Debutante Stakes six weeks later, At the Spa sat just oﬀ the pace and then ran away commandingly in the ﬁve-furlong race to win by 21∕4 lengths. Behind her was Munny Penny, also bred and owned by Lovingier. “Watching two babies that I bred draw

off together was very cool,” Lovingier said at the time. At the Spa was entered for the Sorrento Stakes (G2) at Del Mar, but was scratched and went on to the $101,500 California Toroughbred Breeders’ Association Stakes Aug. 5, where she faced brilliant maiden breaker and favorite It’s Simple. Unfazed by the competition, At the Spa sat just off the pace once again and battled in the stretch to win by a neck over Drizella and Madiha. She ran the 51∕2 furlongs in 1:06.11. Te TVG Del Mar Debutante Stakes (G1) looked like a logical spot to test the mettle of such an unbeaten, classy filly. However, At the Spa was fractious in the gate, went three wide, and was eased in the lane as her graded debut went awry. “We gave her some time off,” Lovingier said. “She’s a shorter filly, and she had some issues.” At the Spa didn’t return until the $101,500 Soviet Problem Stakes at Los Alamitos Dec. 10, where she finished sixth. When asked about winning two California champion awards in a year, Lovingier was enthusiastic. “It’s great,” he said. “Tis is what we breed horses for. It’s nice when you foal them and then race them.” Lovingier is also responsible for several other 2021 California benchmarks, such as Stay Tirsty as champion Sire of California-conceived 2-year-olds by earnings and Broodmare of the Year My Fiona. He was also the year’s leading breeder of California-foaled Toroughbreds by earnings.

efore Te Chosen Vron’s debut, trainer Eric Kruljac thought the gelding looked like he would be “a useful horse.” But three weeks before his debut, a light in Te Chosen Vron’s head switched on. “It was December of his 2-year-old year, and he suddenly started throwing out these extraordinary works,” Kruljac said. “He proved it when breaking his maiden the ﬁrst time, which hardly ever happens with my horses.” Te Chosen Vron, a son of Vronsky— Tiz Molly, by Tiz Wonderful, runs for the partnership of Kruljac, Robert Fetkin, John Sondereker, and Richard Tornburgh. Tey bred the ﬂashy chestnut under their Tiz Molly Partners moniker and have gotten to experience the joy of watching him excel at the races. After breaking his maiden in the twilight of 2020 with a smashing 63∕4-length romp sprinting at Santa Anita, Te Chosen Vron was ready to take on the best in 2021. He went to the post in the $200,000 San Vicente Stakes (G2) against several Triple

Crown prospects and ﬁnished third, beaten just over three lengths by Concert Tour and Freedom Fighter. Back in against California-breds, Te Chosen Vron was heavily favored in the $152,000 Echo Eddie Stakes over 61∕2 furlongs. He faced eight rivals, and despite a bit of a rough trip with some bumping around the turn to the stretch, Te Chosen Vron swooped to the lead under Mike Smith and drew away to win by 11∕4 lengths. Kruljac knew Te Chosen Vron was a graded type of horse and put him in the $98,000 Lazaro Barrera Stakes (G3). Te Chosen Vron rumbled home 31∕2 lengths clear of impressive maiden winner Laurel River, who was 10 lengths in front of thirdplace ﬁnisher Wipe the Slate.

One graded stakes win wasn’t enough for Te Chosen Vron, who wheeled back into the $100,000 Affirmed Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita June 13. Despite his previous successes, he was sent away as the second choice but won anyway, 11∕4 lengths clear of Defunded, with favored Classier another 11 lengths back in third. Te Chosen Vron, who was ridden by Umberto Rispoli, stopped the clock in 1:44.01 for the 11∕16-mile race, his first attempt around two turns. “Tey were both very impressive races, to beat those kinds of horses so well,” Kruljac said of the two graded wins. “Tose were my favorite races.” With all of his previous starts having come at Santa Anita, Te Chosen Vron was entered at Del Mar for the July 30 Real Good Deal Stakes. He put in his usual rally during the $175,500 race, but winner None Above the Law was long gone and Te Chosen Vron had to settle for second. He was off until the $60,000 Hank Mills Sr. Stakes at Turf Paradise Nov. 5, which he won to cap his season. “He’s a really cool horse, and we’re blessed to have him,” Kruljac said. Te Chosen Vron has five wins, a second, and a third in seven starts for earnings of $340,678. He went to the sidelines over the winter for a minor surgery but is back at the track. “We had to stop on him, but he’s coming back great,” Kruljac said. “We’re taking our sweet time.”

hen John Harris’ Harris Farms and the Johnston family’s Old English Rancho combined their operations a few years ago, it brought together two of the oldest and most successful Toroughbred facilities in the Golden State. So it’s not surprising that this has already produced a California-bred champion: Closing Remarks.

John Harris bred and races Closing Remarks. He purchased Aspen Gal, the filly’s second dam, for $42,000 at the 2005 Keeneland November sale from Mill Ridge Sales Agent. “I like mares with solid race records, but can’t afford the really glitzy ones,” said Harris. “I always look up actual race records. Aspen Gal had won five of 10 starts and was grade 2-placed at Belmont. It’s taken a while, but now that mare I bought on a clear, cold day in Kentucky is the second dam of Closing Remarks, deemed to be one of the best turf fillies in sunny California.” 28

Harris pointed out that Vronsky, the sire of Closing Remarks, and Unusual Heat, her broodmare sire, initially stood at Old English, headed at the time by the late E.W. (Buddy) Johnston. Both stallions were major sires in California, and they spent their later years standing at Harris. “Tey moved to Harris, along with our superb farm manager, Jonny Hilvers,” Harris said. “I have many fond memories of Buddy and Judy Johnston, icons in California equine history and the grandparents of Jonny. Judy still lives in the area, now close to our River Ranch.” Aspen Gal, when bred to Unusual Heat, produced Orange Cove, who was unraced but is the dam of Closing Remarks. “All of us at Harris Farms are thrilled by Closing Remarks being voted champion

Cal-bred 3-year-old filly,” said Harris. “She is our stable star and exemplifies all the good qualities I look for.” Harris put Closing Remarks in training with Carla Gaines, and the filly has won her first time out at 2, 3, and 4. Closing Remarks’ finest victory came in the first start of her 2021 championship season, the Leigh Ann Howard California Cup Oaks. Stalking between rivals early under jockey Umberto Rispoli, Closing Remarks shifted three wide into the stretch after steadying briefly. She took command and scored by a length, completing the onemile turf event in 1:35.62. Following the Oaks against Cal-bred and California-sired company, Closing Remarks spent the rest of the season almost exclusively in graded stakes. She finished second four times, including in the Del Mar Oaks (G1T), Senorita Stakes (G3T), and Providencia Stakes (G3T). Closing Remarks missed catching the good Irish-bred Going Global by only a length in the 11∕8mile Del Mar Oaks after waiting for room in upper stretch. And Closing Remarks’ racing career is far from finished. After winning her first race this year, she ran third in the Buena Vista Stakes (G2T), raising her total earnings to $371,320. Harris sold Orange Cove for $5,000 at the 2020 California Toroughbred Breeders Association winter mixed sale. “Fortunately, she was purchased by Craig and Larry Lewis, great friends over the years of the sport,” Harris said. Aspen Gal, now 21, remains at Harris. She was most recently bred to Om, who stands at Harris.

“We are so thankful to get this award for her,” said Sally. “But the fact that she’s not here just breaks our hearts. She meant everything in the world to us.” Warren’s Showtime was particularly special to Ben because he raced her second dam, More Cal Bread, who produced Warren’s Veneda, the dam of Warren’s Showtime, for him. Warren’s Veneda was voted the 2015 champion Cal-bred older female and the 2020 Broodmare of the Year. Craig Lewis trained Warren’s Veneda and Warren’s Showtime, as well as Clubhouse Ride, the sire of Warren’s Showtime. “Warren’s Veneda has been a wonderful mare for us,” said Ben. “Craig did an outstanding job with both Warren’s Veneda and Warren’s Showtime, and we appreciate his eﬀorts with all of our horses.”

Not only was Warren’s Showtime consistently in the money—in 26 lifetime starts she won eight races (seven of them stakes), with five seconds and 10 thirds—she raced well on dirt and turf. She did her best racing on the grass, as she demonstrated in her two stakes victories during 2021. Early in the season Warren’s Showtime finished third in three stakes and second in a fourth, each time either encountering trouble or having to close wide. A graded winner in 2020, Warren’s Showtime added to that in the June 20 Wilshire Stakes (G3T), catching front-running Cal-bred Leggs Galore to score by 11∕4 lengths. In her final four starts of the year, Warren’s Showtime won the California Distaff Handicap down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course and placed in three other stakes, including a second in the Bayakoa Stakes (G3). Troughout her career, she won at Santa Anita, Del Mar, and Los Alamitos, and early in 2022 she had already placed in the Megahertz Stakes (G3T), bringing her lifetime bankroll to $843,431. Te Warrens were looking forward to seeing Warren’s Showtime continue her stellar racing career and then become a broodmare. “We wanted to breed her to Into Mischief,” said Sally. “I was so looking forward to having a baby out of her.” Warren’s Showtime was a favorite at the Lewis barn, and the Warrens enjoyed visiting her when they came to the races from their home in Las Vegas. “But she wouldn’t give you the time of day if you didn’t have a horse cookie,” said Sally. “She was a proud, smart filly, and she loved what she did.”

ans loved Warren’s Showtime. She was the kind of runner people adore—consistently in the money and always giving her best eﬀort.

A second-generation homebred for Benjamin Warren, Warren’s Showtime raced for Warren and his wife, Sally. Tey posted her exploits on Facebook, which brought international attention to the two-time California-bred champion. “I had a call from Germany and a guy from France,” said Sally. “I’ve got about 150 on Facebook, people saying, ‘Oh we love her’ and ‘She tried every time.’ I would post whenever she ran, and people would wish us good luck.” Te consistency and grit of Warren’s Showtime earned her a second consecutive Cal-bred championship, her 2021 older female title adding to her 2020 3-yearold female award. Tragically, the Warrens lost Warren’s Showtime a month before the March 28 awards ceremony, when the mare took a bad step during a Santa Anita workout and had to be euthanized. 30

hen Doug Burge welcomed guests to the March 28 California Toroughbred Breeders Association awards banquet, it was much more than the usual opening remarks. Te CTBA president acknowledged what everyone attending events in 2022 felt—wow, was it great to actually see people in person. Te CTBA awards banquets of 2020 and 2022 bookended the COVID pandemic. In 2020 the CTBA was able to hold its awards ceremony in the nick of time before the world shut down. Ten, in 2021, awards had to be handed out virtually. Tus, the 2022 banquet, honoring the champions of 2021, was even more vital to the California Toroughbred breeding industry. During the pandemic, construction continued and was completed on the new Le Méridien hotel in Arcadia, across the street from Santa Anita’s Huntington Drive entrance and down the road from the CTBA headquarters in Arcadia. It was the perfect venue for the dinner, gorgeous, elegant, and a far cry from the old Santa Anita Inn and the 100-to-1 Club that previously had stood there. Tat did prompt several stories during the cocktail hour about racetracker carousing that had occurred at the 100-to-1 Club when everyone was younger. Te banquet honored the 2021 California-bred champions, leading sires and breeder, top broodmare, trainer of the year, and new Hall of Fame inductees. Te event culminated in crowning the Horse of the Year, no surprise this time as Lieutenant Dan added that title to his older male, sprint, and turf championships.

CTBA Chairperson Terry Lovingier, who picked up several awards himself, presented the Horse of the Year trophy to Nick Alexander, owner/breeder of Lieutenant Dan. “When I was 4 years old, my grandmother took me to Griﬃth Park to the pony rides,” said Alexander. “Te frst time you went there, you had to walk around in a circle. But there were other kids in the second or third lane who were trotting and galloping. I told my grandmother, ‘I want to come back and do that.’ From that day on, I’ve been hooked on horses.” Alexander’s passion has led to a string

of good Cal-breds and a host of awards. Not only did he pick up Lieutenant Dan’s hardware, he collected two awards for his stallion Grazen, the leading California sire of California-conceived foals by earnings and by number of winners. Lovingier, honored as leading breeder, also received awards for leading sire of California-conceived 2-year-olds by earnings Stay Tirsty, Broodmare of the Year My Fiona, and 2-year-old champions Finneus and At the Spa. Lovingier typically brings in many partners in the ownership of his horses, and he made sure to share the podium with several of those partners. Ben and Sally Warren were especially

emotional in accepting the older female champion title for their Warren’s Showtime, who died just a month earlier. “She was such a wonderful, wonderful mare,” said Sally Warren. “She tried every time, and she had so many fans.” Trainer Eric Kruljac, a partner in the breeding and owning of 3-year-old male champion Te Chosen Vron, gave a shout-out to longtime California breeder Dr. Jim Buell while accepting that award. CTBA director Ty Green presented the trainer of the year award to Andy Mathis, who, Green said, “embraces the Cal-bred program with excellence, honesty, and integrity.” Mathis waved his speaking notes and pointed out that, as per a “typical trainer,” they were on the page of a condition book. Closing Remarks’ award for 3-year-old female champion highlighted the job breeders do shepherding female families for generations, as John Harris has done with her bottom line. Harris and his longtime trainer Carla Gaines spoke about Closing Remarks, who, according to Gaines, is “an amazing horse and very easy to train.” Harris also spoke about the induction of Cee’s Tizzy in the Hall of Fame, the stallion having stood at Harris Farms for many years. Kim McCarthy represented Hal Earnhardt, owner/breeder of Hall of Fame inductee Indian Charlie while emcee Frank Mirahmadi stood in for Reddam Racing in accepting the award for Square Eddie as the leading turf sire. Dr. Ed Allred, the fnal Hall of Fame inductee and owner of Los Alamitos, couldn’t be at the banquet, but many cited his numerous contributions to the industry. Jack Liebau accepted for Allred and addressed the continual question of octogenarian Allred’s plans.

Liebau noted that North County Guy and Cordiality, bred by Allred from the mare Warmth, were claimed oﬀ Allred and went on to win stakes. A week before the banquet, Funny Feeling, a daughter of Smiling Tiger out of Warmth, broke her maiden impressively for Allred at Santa Anita. Liebau said he called to congratulate Allred, who told Liebau that after he retires Funny Feeling, he will breed her to a good stallion and race the oﬀspring, but not in a claiming race. “So Ed’s new plan is to race the yet-to-be-conceived horse and hopefully have another stakes winner,” said Liebau. As the saying goes, horses keep you young. 36

Sonny Pais’ homebred Brickyard Ride maintains his undefeated 2022 record with a victory in the Sensational Star Stakes at Santa Anita

PERFECT YEAR BRICKYARD RIDE PROVES A HORSE FOR ALL SURFACES

rickyard Ride is the poster child for the benefts of R&R. Owner/breeder Alfred (Sonny) Pais and trainer Craig Lewis sent Brickyard Ride to Katie Fisher’s Kingfsher Farm last year to give the horse a breather. He has rewarded them with a perfect 2022 so far, most recently in the $101,500 Sensational Star Stakes March 20 at Santa Anita. All three of Brickyard Ride’s 2022 races have resulted in stakes victories, each illustrating another aspect of the horse’s incredible talent. He began with his known strength—six furlongs on the dirt in the Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint. Ten he stretched out to a mile in the Tiznow Stakes. In the Sensational Star, he switched to turf and for the frst time negotiated Santa Anita’s famous downhill turf course of about 61⁄2 furlongs.

“Any time you try something diferent, you get a little nervous,” said Pais. “But when you’re a runner, you usually run. And he’s a runner.” As the 7-10 Sensational Star favorite in the feld of eight, Brickyard Ride broke second and quickly went to the lead for jockey Juan Hernandez. He few down the hill as if he had done it his entire career. “He loves to run, and I was just having fun with him,” Hernandez said. “My horse

crossed the dirt pretty good, and after that I asked him a couple of times to pick it up and he just kept going.” Brickyard Ride sped the frst quarter-mile in :21.21 and the half in :42.76. He led throughout, at one point 31⁄2 lengths clear. Indian Peak tried to catch Brickyard Ride and closed a little ground. But at the wire, Brickyard Ride had a 11⁄2-length advantage and his fnal time was a swift 1:11.45, only .72 of the course record of 1:10.73. “He doesn’t leave the gate as quickly as people would imagine, but after a stride or two, he’s just fast,” said Lewis. “He can get into stride faster than any horse I’ve every seen. He looked like he was going easy, but when I looked up and saw the frst split, I said, ‘Holy cow.’ He’s just a really good horse and I’m lucky to have him.” Lewis trained Clubhouse Ride, the sire of Brickyard Ride, and he has done well with ofspring by his former charge. Pais bred the Southern Image mare Brickyard Helen to Clubhouse Ride to get his star Cal-bred. With the Sensational Star, Brickyard Ride was winning his 11th race in 21 starts for total earnings of $680,977. “I knew he’d be kind of keen today because I went back to the barn and he was a little keyed up,” said Pais. Pais and Lewis have plenty of options, given how well Brickyard Ride is running on multiple surfaces and at diferent distances. “We have been just trying to plan it out, make it as easy as possible to see how good he is before he tackles a little heavier company,” said Pais.

Straight Up G had captured the $100,000 Mine Tat Bird Derby Feb. 27 and returned for the 11⁄8-mile Sunland Park Derby. Slow Down Andy took a diferent route. He had completed his 2-year-old season with a victory in the $300,000 Los Alamitos Futurity-G2, and in his 3-year-old debut he ran sixth after a wide trip in the $400,000 Risen Star Stakes Presented by Lamarque Ford (G2) at the Fair Grounds in Louisiana. Slow Down Andy, bred and owned by Paul and Zillah Reddam’s Reddam Racing, has used a variety of tactics in his races. In his 51⁄2-furlong debut last October at Santa Anita, he raced in third early and scored by 43⁄4 lengths under Mario Gutierrez, who has ridden him in every start. In the $178,000 Golden State Juvenile at seven furlongs, Slow Down Andy raced in fourth, challenged for the lead in the stretch, and ran second to closer Finneus by a half-length. Slow Down Andy won the Los Alamitos Futurity after running last early, and in the Risen Star he raced in sixth throughout most of the race. Doug O’Neill, who trains Slow Down Andy for the Reddams, elected to add blinkers to the colt’s equipment for the Sunland Park Derby. Pepper Spray fnished third, followed by Fowler Blue (the third Cal-bred in the feld), Chrome King, Costa Terra, Straight Up G, and Classic Moment. “Tat horse on the outside was very game, and my horse was slowing down a bit,” said Gutierrez. “But then we changed leads and he got a second wind.” Slow Down Andy is a son of the Reddams’ champion Nyquist out of their homebred mare Edwina E, a Cal-bred daughter of the Reddams’ California sire Square Eddie. It is a nick that worked particularly well at Sunland Park. Earlier on the card, 4-year-old Team Merchants, a Kentucky-bred full brother to Slow Down Andy, won the Bill Tomas Memorial Stakes.

even years ago California lost E.W. (Buddy) Johnston, and yet his legacy lives on. Johnston’s family continues to breed and race top California-breds: Acclimate, one of the last foals bred by Buddy, is still going strong at age 8 and proved that by capturing the $126,000 San Luis Rey Stakes (G3T) March 12 at Santa Anita. “We breed them, and we bring them into the world, and then we race them,” said Judy Johnston, Buddy’s widow and his longtime partner in the family’s Old English Rancho. “Tis horse is exceptionally good, and we are very pleased with him.” Judy noted that Acclimate’s sire, Acclamation, also ran well as an older horse. Bred by Old English and raced by the fam-

ily, Acclamation competed through age 6 in 2012 and won an Eclipse Award as the nation’s champion older horse of 2011. He stood frst at Old English and now at John Harris’ Harris Farms, where Buddy and Judy’s grandson Jonny Hilvers manages the combination of Harris and Old English. Old English bred Acclimate with Sal and Patsy Berumen from a family that traces back in Old English roots to multiple graded winner Fancy ’n Fabulous, the third dam. Acclimate is out of the Boundary mare Knows No Bounds. Old English rac-

Te 11⁄2-mile turf event is a prep for the historic San Juan Capistrano Stakes (G3T), slated for closing day, June 19. Acclimate won the San Juan in 2019 and 2021. It is no secret that Acclimate likes to set the pace, which jockey Ricky Gonzalez acknowledged, saying, “I sound like a broken record, but that’s what he likes to do. He likes to go out there and be happy on the lead.” Sure enough, Acclimate went right to the front, and none of his rivals took him on. Tat allowed him to complete the frst quarter-mile in an easy :25.08 and a halfmile in :48.26. “Today he made a pretty sensible pace,” said trainer Phil D’Amato. On the backside, Acclimate led by as much as three lengths. Current closed the gap a bit around the fnal turn, and Dicey Mo Chara put in a bid three wide. Dicey Mo Chara took it to Acclimate throughout the stretch, but the veteran Cal-bred held him at bay to win by a half-length in 2:25.40, with Current third. “He’s just a cool horse,” said D’Amato. “He deserved the opportunity to put in this kind of a performance today. Te other horse came to him, and he fought him of. So the win was well deserved. Tis horse is always there. He likes those dog fghts.” Gonzalez said that Acclimate “was just playing around the whole time.” When Dicey Mo Chara challenged, Gonzalez said that Acclimate “dug in and showed his heart, how big it is.”

inesiology is the study of body movement, and it addresses the physiological, biomechanical, and psychological dynamic principles and mechanisms of movement. As a science, it also uses the principles of traditional Chinese medicine to evaluate health and imbalances. In recent decades, various treatments and rehab methodologies have been created using kinesiology. For instance, the Kinesio Taping® Method is a rehabilitative technique designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process by providing more soft-tissue manipulation. Tis mimics massage while providing support and sta-

bility to the muscles and joints without restricting their range of motion. ORIGINS

In 1973 Japanese chiropractor Dr. Kenzo Kase developed the Kinesio tape and method for using it to provide a non-pharmaceutical way to alleviate his human patients’ pain in between their appointments. He was born in Japan in the 1940s, and as a child he sufered from pneumonia, tuberculosis, kidney infections, and allergies. Kase learned about the power of healing touch from his grandmother, a Japanese healer who used herbal remedies, acupuncture, and moxibustion—a Chinese

technique that involves burning moxa (a cone or stick made of ground mugwort leaves) on or near the body’s meridians and acupuncture points. Practitioners believe that the heat helps stimulate these points and improves the fow of energy in the body. After graduating from chiropractic school in Chicago, Kase continued to combine his education in mainstream and traditional medical techniques and philosophies. During the 1970s, while treating elderly osteoarthritis patients, he became frustrated with the limited treatment methods available. Even though he could get the patient’s joint into a position that was less painful

and resembled normal use, after these patients went home, they’d usually return to their old habits and painful positions. He wanted the treatments to extend beyond ofce visits, so he tried to fnd a way to send his hands home with them. Mona Angel, general manager of the Kinesio Group in Albuquerque, N.M., explains that Kase tried to tape joints into the desired positions, but the tape available for medical use at that time was too stif. So he invented his own tapes, working with product engineers through a long process of testing. Eventually, they created a tape fexible enough to preserve range of motion but lightweight and hypoallergenic so it could stay on the skin without causing a rash. Tis tape, which has the same thickness, stretch, and weight as the top layer of skin, allows the tape’s efects to target diferent receptors within the somatosensory system (the complex system of sensory neurons and neural pathways that responds to changes at the surface of the body) with minimal perception of its presence. Te somatosensory system is the part of the sensory system involved with conscious perception of touch, pressure, pain, temperature, position, movement, and vibration—sensations that arise from muscles, joints, skin, and fascia. Fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds muscles, groups of muscles, blood vessels, and nerves, binding some structures together, while permitting others to slide smoothly over each other. Te tape Kase invented allows for sweat evaporation and cooling. Te adhesive pattern is a repeated wave form, similar to the “tread” on a fngerprint. Tis pattern tends to lift the skin and allow moisture to escape. Te elasticity facilitates tissue stretching, creating either a massage or a lifting efect on subdermal and fascial layers. Tis forms tiny convolutions in the skin, which separate the muscle and dermal layers as well as increase interstitial space between the capillaries and the tissue cells. Te increased space has a lower pressure gradient than the surrounding areas and pulls fuid and exudates into it.

Tis fuid movement helps decreases swelling, heat, infammation, and pain in the treated area and aids normal blood fow and lymphatic drainage. Te increased space also takes pressure of swollen or injured muscles, reducing pain and allowing for tissue remodeling and healing. Te tape’s massaging efect provides stimulation to skin cells that afect pain pathways—similar to rubbing a spot that hurts. Kinesiotaping has some positive physiological efects on the skin, as well as on the lymphatic, circulatory, and neuromuscular (fascia, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints) systems. “Te basic function of Kinesio tape is to use the body’s own natural healing power and just helps the body do what it is supposed to do,” said Angel. “It doesn’t make you stronger or faster, but does take you back to where you started. For instance, if you have a sore arm, taping can help your body deal with that. “Te nice thing about the tape is that it performs certain functions on the skin that afect the underlying tissues. We have four diferent kinds of tape, and each kind does diferent things when you put it on the body.” In human athletes, Kinesio Taping® was frst used on sumo wrestlers in Japan more than 25 years ago. “In the 2008 Olympics some of the athletes used it, and the tape gained more popularity during the 2012 Summer Olympics,” Angel said. “We now have more than 200 instructors and hundreds of thousands of CKTPs (Certifed Kinesio Taping Practitioners) who tape patients in clinics and hospitals around the world. “Our instructors are trained in how to apply it. Dr. Kase has been taping himself for years, and his favorite thing to say is that he was glad he was born a sickly child because he was able to experiment and try things on himself. Now that he is getting older, he invented taping for older adults.” As a person ages, it becomes harder to perform normal functions—harder to get up out of a chair, etc. So Kase created a tape that helps older people stay mobile longer.

In recent years this taping method has become an alternative therapy for horses. Several brands are currently used. EquiTape was one of the frst equine elastic kinesiology tapes, created by Dr. Beverly Gordon, an equine chiropractor and physiotherapist. Te Kinesio group begun by Kase had already done research and development in this area, and in 2014 the company came out with its horse tape. “We went around Kentucky and visited racetracks, horse farms, horse rescue facilities, etc.,” said Angel. “It was amazing how well it worked on horses. If a horse had an issue and you taped it for that issue, you could see the change in the horse almost immediately. It was amazing, and it was because of their hair. “Te horse’s hair makes them a lot more sensitive to the tape than humans are. Some people say the tape is just a placebo, but the horse doesn’t know. Tis is why I like using it on animals because you can tell if it really works.” A horse is either lame or he isn’t. “We’ve had great results with our horse tapes and dog tapes,” said Angel. “We use practitioners, but we also teach horse owners how to tape their own animals.” It is important to apply the tape correctly. “You get some beneft even if you just put it in the general area, but better results if you know how much tension and where to put it,” said Angel. “It is also more comfortable for the horse if you don’t get it too tight.

It’s been said that equine kinesiology tape improves the proprioceptive feedback to the area that’s taped, helping retrain muscles to maintain the correct positioning/alignment as the horse moves. It also allows free movement of lymphatic fuid and reduces friction between the tissues in the skin, helps with movement of blood and lactic acid, and takes tension of certain muscles. Just as human athletes can wear the tape when training for their sport, horses can be ridden with the tape in place while working. Te tape can also be used when a horse is recovering from an injury. Tis is the most common use for it in most disciplines, including racing. Kinesiology tape difers from standing wraps, feece wraps, frst aid tape, VetRap, or other tapes or braces. It stretches and is fexible, does not restrict range of motion, yet at the same time, provides some stability and support. Te degree of stretch that you use when applying the tape and the application pattern on the horse’s body are crucial for obtaining desired results. Torough assessment of the horse’s needs and issues is important before the tape is applied. Te tape tends to lift the skin, decompressing the tissue and enabling increased blood fow. Te lifting forms small irregular ridges in the skin, increasing interstitial space and allowing for decrease in infammation and facilitation of lymph drainage. Te lifting of the skin and tissue de-

compression also impact pain receptors and how they respond to messages from the brain. Tis can help facilitate the healing process in injuries and the recovery process during athletic training. Te tape also helps prolong the benefts of manual therapies because it helps increase the stretch of collagen fbers in the muscles. Proper taping can help alleviate muscle soreness, aid muscle relaxation, and reduce swelling from an injury. Kinesiotaping can be used at any point in a healing process, from acute onset to chronic, or in the rehabilitation stage. It can also be used as a preventive measure to protect the area from further injury during rehabilitation or strenuous exercise. It can be used in conjunction with heat, cold therapy, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, chiropractic treatment, and during workouts. However, it should not be used in infected areas or areas with tumors or directly over open or healing wounds. Deep vein thrombosis should also not be taped. Kinesiotape comes in several colors. Te darker colors (red, black) absorb more sunlight and increase skin temperature under the tape for situations when heat is a desired part of the treatment. If infammation is present, a cooler color can be used, though the color doesn’t have as much efect on horses as it might on humans, due to the insulating efect of the horse’s hair coat. If you want to decrease swelling, it should be applied diferently than if you want to support a joint or muscle. Te stickiness and stretchiness of the tape allow the hair to be lifted, which helps bring more circulation to that area. Te stretch in the tape is to accommodate range of motion, not for wrapping tightly against the skin. You always need to be careful not to tape a horse tightly, since this may irritate the skin, and also because horses have an extra muscle (a thin sheet called the panniculus), which allows them to wiggle the skin to get rid of fies. Don’t wrap tape all the way around a leg.

Tere should always be a gap, to avoid cutting of circulation. Once the tape is applied to the horse, the adhesive must be activated by rubbing the tape with your hand. Typically, the tape can be left on a horse for up to fve days, as long as it’s not beginning to peel— though it won’t have as much recoil after the frst day or two and isn’t as efective. “Te nice thing about the horse tape is that it is designed to work on the hair,” said Angel. “Te thing to remember about taping a horse is that even though this is a large animal, you don’t need to do it bigger, tighter, or stronger. Often a small piece of tape with very light tension will work on a horse because it stimulates the hair so much. Te hair follicle under the skin is very sensitive. Sometimes with a big, long piece of tape, you have to be careful because it overstimulates the horse. “Tis is the main thing I tell horse owners because if they try to tape their horse and are inexperienced, they often want to put a lot of tension on it. With a horse, you want to make sure there’s not too much tension; often you can just lay it down on the horse’s hair and you can still see good results.” Don’t apply tape if the horse is dirty or shedding. Remove all loose hair. Before you apply tape, clean the area and make sure the hair lies fat. If dirt or foreign matter gets under the tape, it can be irritating and cause sores. Some people think they should clip the hair to have better contact with the skin. “Clipping would be counterproductive for our tape, however, because it works best with the hair—especially the way we’ve made our adhesive pattern,” said Angel. “Clean is good, but you don’t need to clip.” Some people recommend applying a polo wrap or support wrap over the tape to protect it. Te tape might stay on for three to fve days, and can be re-applied immediately unless there are any skin irritations. In that case, re-applying should wait until the skin has cleared up.
