SALE PRICES REFLECT DEMAND FOR CALIFORNIA-BREDS

T

he commercial sales in California kicked of very strongly this year with the recently conducted Winter Mixed Sale at Fairplex in Pomona. Te results included signifcant increases in all key categories: gross sales, average, and median. In fact, the reported average of $11,490, which increased even higher after several horses were sold following the publishing of the results, was the highest for this mixed sale in many years. While we were pleased with the prices of the more commercial breeding stock that were ofered, it was the demand for the early 2-year-olds and yearlings that fueled the increases. (See the top prices below.)

Tis demand for young horses has continued the positive trends seen last year. Both the CTBA Northern California Yearling Sale and the Fasig-Tipton September Yearling Sale, held in 2021, were extremely successful, with major increases across the board. As racing in California continues to become more dependent on California-breds, and the opportunities and rewards remain lucrative, the worth and demand should continue to rise. Te restricted racing and incentives will continue to trigger this increased marketability for well-bred and well-conformed Cal-breds. Te in-state racing opportunities, with growing overnight purses and an extremely

rewarding restricted stakes schedule, give a signifcant advantage to owners. I think we have made nearly everyone aware that if you are racing in California, you should defnitely have Cal-breds in your barn. From a state breeding standpoint, we are now experiencing positive results with a stable annual foal crop and a strong commercial and private sales market. As California breeders continue to focus on quality, we should be able to successfully build on these results. We are defnitely looking forward to the remaining sales this year in-state: the CTBA NorCal Yearling Sale on Aug. 9 in Pleasanton and the Fasig-Tipton sale scheduled for Sept. 27 in Pomona.

HARRINGTONS RETIRE

■ Take the One O One to Stud

Te husband-and-wife training team of Mike and Patty Harrington retired in January. Both in their early 80s, they have decided to take it a little easier after a lifetime in racing. Tey dispersed all but a couple of broodmares they own in partnership at the California Toroughbred Breeders Association winter mixed sale Feb. 1 through Andy Havens’ Havens Bloodstock Agency. As a youngster, Mike rode as a jockey at bush tracks in Oregon as well as rode saddle broncs. He studied to be a veterinarian and practiced for many years in the Pacifc Northwest. Patti got her trainer’s license in 1961, and for many years she trained their horses while Mike was a racetrack vet. Te couple began spending winters in Northern California during the mid-1980s, and they relocated full time to the state after the closure of Longacres in Washington in 1992. Mike trained multiple graded winner Swiss Yodeler, who went on to become a major California sire, and millionaire Creative Cause, a multiple graded winner. Te Harringtons trained several ofspring of Swiss Yodeler. Tey bred Tilde, a daughter of Swiss Yodeler, and Mike owned and trained her to become the champion California-bred 2-year-old flly of 2012. Patty said that retirement plans could include overseeing some property in Tehachapi, where their mares could reside. Patty noted that “I haven’t been without horses since I was 7.” Mike was able to fulfll a promise to himself. He told Patti that he would ride a saddle horse until he was 80, “and he did it,” she said.

Take the One O One, the California-bred champion 3-year-old male of 2018, has been retired from racing and will enter stud for the 2022 season at Barton Thoroughbreds in Santa Ynez. He will stand for $2,000, with special consideration for approved mares. A 7-year-old son of Acclamation—North Freeway, by Jump Start, Take the One O One won six of 20 starts and earned $490,826. Tom Bachman bred him in California and sold him for $47,000 at the 2016 California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Northern California yearling sale. Take the One O One is a half brother to stakes winner Square Deal. Trained by Brian Koriner for Jay Em Ess Stables, Take the One O One captured the 2018 Snow Chief and Real Good Deal Stakes. He fnished second in the 2020 Cary Grant Stakes and third in the 2017 FrontRunner Stakes (G1), 2018 Echo Eddie Stakes, and 2020 San Antonio Stakes (G2).

California stallion Ministers Wild Cat, a major sire at Tommy Town Thoroughbreds in Santa Ynez, has been pensioned at the age of 22, the farm announced Feb. 16. On the racetrack, Ministers Wild Cat was a multiple stakes winner and earner of $368,729. He initially raced for his breeders, Marjorie and Irving Cowan, and later for Tommy Town. A son of Deputy Minister, Ministers Wild Cat is out of the Kris S mare Hollywood Wildcat, who won the 1993 Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) and several other graded stakes for the Cowans. Ministers Wild Cat, who entered stud at Tommy Town in 2006, is a half brother to millionaire, 2000 Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1T) winner, and sire War Chant. Ministers Wild Cat’s 14 crops to race have earnings of more than $24 million. His 34 stakes winners include graded winners Doinghardtimeagain, an earner of $734,304, and eventual sire Tiz a Minister, as well as current runners Fly to Mars and Minister of Soul.

Warren’s Showtime © BENOIT PHOTO

The California breeding industry lost a special horse Feb. 26 when California-bred champion Warren’s Showtime took a bad step during a work at Santa Anita and had to be euthanized. “She was a barn favorite; everybody loved her,” said trainer Craig Lewis. “She gave everything she could every time.” That heart made Warren’s Showtime one of the most consistent runners around. In 26 starts, she won eight times, seven of those in stakes, with fve seconds, 10 thirds, and two fourths, for earnings of $843,431. Ben Warren bred and raced Warren’s Veneda, a Cal-bred champion herself and the dam of Warren’s Showtime. Lewis trained both Warren’s Veneda and Clubhouse Ride, the sire of Warren’s Showtime, and Warren bred Warren’s Showtime, racing her with his wife, Sally. Already prized for those connections, Warren’s Showtime went on to become a Cal-bred champion and also gave Lewis the 1,000th win of his career, in the 2020 Autumn Miss Stakes (G3). “The best thing was that Craig got his 1,000th win and it happened to be for us,” said Sally Warren after the race. Voted the champion Cal-bred 3-year-old female of 2020, Warren’s Showtime won her frst stakes, the 2019 listed Surfer Girl Stakes, in her fourth start. In 2020 she captured the California Cup Oaks, China Doll Stakes, and Melair Stakes before getting her frst graded win, in the Autumn Miss. In 2021 she added the Wilshire Stakes (G3T) and California Distaff Handicap. Warren’s Showtime placed in 14 other stakes, including the 2020 Del Mar Oaks (G1). In her fnal start, Warren’s Showtime ran second in the Jan. 29 Megahertz Stakes (G3T), coming on toward the end after lacking room to miss catching Canoodling by a half-length. “We knew she was good, but she kept winning those stakes races,” said Sally Warren. “She proved herself over and over again.”

Bill Delia

Blending Element SHANE MICHELI/VASSAR PHOTOGRAPHY

William (Bill) Delia, named the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association trainer of the year of 2019, died Jan. 28 at age 75. Many of the best horses he trained, including Central Heat, Bai and Bai, and most recently Bettor Trip Nick, were California-breds. After 20 years as a jockey, Delia in 1985 turned to training. During his years as a rider, he earned the nickname “Wild Bill.” “We used to get kind of wild when we were partying up a little bit,” Delia once said, “and I liked to jump up on a table and dance.” Delia moved from New Jersey to California with his family at age 10, settling in El Monte. He began exercising horses for trainer Gary Jones and rode for such trainers as Jones’ father, Farrell, and Keith Stucki. Central Heat was the top earner for Delia, who as a trainer amassed purses of $16.7 million. The daughter of Unusual Heat earned $458,602. While trained by Delia, who owned her in partnership, Central Heat captured the 2015 Luther Burbank Handicap and 2016 Golden Poppy Stakes. Bai and Bai was voted champion Cal-bred 3-year-old female of 2006, when she won the Telegraph Hill Stakes, Palo Alto Handicap, and Muir Woods Stakes for Delia. She ultimately earned $724,983. Delia also trained and co-owned 1997 California Derby (G3) winner I’m a Jewel and trained Cal-bred stakes winner Truce in Balance during the 1990s. Delia trained Bettor Trip Nick to win the 2019 Golden Nugget Stakes and Gold Rush Stakes. When Delia received his trainer of the year award at the 2020 CTBA

Graded stakes winner Blending Element, the dam of California sire Texas Ryano, California-bred champion Excessive Blend, and three other Cal-bred stakes winners, died at age 29 Jan. 27 at Sheltowee Farm in Midway, Ky. Raced in this country by the late Warren Williamson, Irishbred Blending Element produced 12 foals, all bred by Williamson or in the name of Williamson Racing, operated by Williamson and his son Henry. Five became stakes winners. Bred by E.J. Loder, Blending Element was by Great Commotion— Blue Wedding, by Irish River. She began her racing career in her native Ireland. Trained in the U.S. by Carla Gaines, Blending Element won the 1999 Yerba Buena Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G3T), The Very One Handicap, and Reloy Handicap. She placed in fve other stakes and earned $448,483. In addition to 2016 Hollywood Turf Cup (G2T) winner Texas Ryano, Blending Element produced Excessive Blend, a multiple stakes winner and champion Cal-bred 3-year-old female of 2009; Cal-bred Tiz Elemental, whose three stakes victories included the 2008 Las Flores Handicap (G3); and Cal-bred stakes winners Tiz a Blend and Holladay Road. Henry Williamson stands Texas Ryano at his Arroyo Vista Farm near Valley Center, Calif., and owns Ultimate Blend, a 7-year-old daughter of California champion Tiznow out of Blending Element.

Just seven weeks after capturing the Golden Gate Derby, California-bred PACIFICBOUNTY made it two in a row by traveling across town to Bay Meadows and winning the El Camino Real Derby (G3) March 8, 1997. The second choice to odds-on Wild Wonder, Pacifc Bounty raced next to last early for jockey Kent Desormeaux in the 11⁄16-mile El Camino Real Derby while Wild Wonder vied for the lead with Cal-bred Carmen’s Baby. Pacifcbounty accelerated late to catch Wild Wonder and score by a length in 1:41.85, with Carmen’s Baby third. Walter Greenman trained Pacifcbounty for the partnership of Donald Grey, Thomas Harris, Wallace Schmidt, Gordon Sinkoff, and Ben Bear. Ocean Air Stables bred the 3-year-old son of Pirate’s Bounty—Fast Katie, by Fast. Pacifcbounty eventually earned $577,203, racing through his 4-year-old season.

California-bred THE PIE HOST had a tough assignment in the Contra Costa Stakes at Golden Gate Fields March 4, 1972. His opponents included Bicker, a stakesplaced son of Round Table who would go on to win the next year’s Malibu Stakes (G2) and San Fernando Stakes (G2). At 14-1, The Pie Host defeated Bicker by 11⁄4 lengths by leading throughout the mile race, stopping the timer in 1:361⁄5. Cal-bred Great Victory fnished third. A. L. Diaz piloted The Pie Host for trainer Riley Cofer. May Stock Farm bred the 3-year-old son of Gallant Host—Miss Galata, by The Pie King, and owned him in partnership. The Pie Host had earlier won for a $12,500 claiming tag, and he went on to win that year’s San Francisco Handicap at Bay Meadows in September.

As reported on this page two years ago, Peterson was the second-leading rider at Monmouth Park in 2020, when Hall of Fame former jockey Julie Krone served as her agent and mentor. Teir subsequent foray into New York racing was impeded because pandemic restrictions prevented them from going into the stable area and making crucial trainer contacts. Next, Peterson went to Maryland, where bad weather and an equine herpes outbreak curtailed racing, severely limiting her opportunities. JUVENILES DOMINATE NUMBERS RISE SUBSTANTIALLY AT 2022 WINTER SALE

Te sale gross more than doubled that of the previous year, as 113 horses sold for a total of $1,298,407. Te $11,490 average soared over the three previous averages, all of those in the $7,000 range. Te 2022 fgure rose 45.9% over 2021, when 73 horses sold for $575,100 and averaged $7,878. Te median was $5,200, 62.5% above the 2021 median of $3,200. “Tis was defnitely one of the better mixed sales we have hosted, as the gross sales, average, and median were up signifcantly,” said Doug Burge, president of the CTBA. “Te demand for California-bred racing prospects continues to trend in the right direction, and we are looking forward to the two yearling sales hosted both north and south later this year.” In the past, broodmares have provided the mixed sale’s strength. However, with Fasig-Tipton opting not to conduct a California 2-year-old sale in 2022, juveniles proved the biggest draw, with the top fve prices for 2-year-olds. Forty-nine 2-yearolds grossed $753,800 and averaged $15,384. Trainer Brian Koriner, who signed the ticket on the sale topper on behalf of Dare to Dream Stable, Don Calabria, and John Crawford, alluded to the 2-year-old sale situation as one of the reasons he bought Le Vron James. “If you don’t have a 2-year-old in California this year, this is your only shot to

buy one,” Koriner said. “So we found one we liked.” Te California-bred colt comes from a long line of Cal-breds. He is by the late California sire Vronsky out of the winning Cal-bred Cee’s Tizzy mare Arousing. Te second dam, Soviet Problem, was the 1994 Cal-bred Horse of the Year. John Harris’ Harris Farms and Don Valpredo bred and raced Soviet Problem, and they also bred Arousing and Le Vron James. Harris Farms consigned the colt to the 2021 CTBA Northern California yearling sale, where Jef Ganje purchased him for $32,000. Ganje named Le Vron James and consigned him to the winter mixed sale through Adrian Gonzalez’s Checkmate Toroughbreds. Ganje was active at the sale, selling several through Checkmate, including a 2-year-old son of California Chrome for $52,000 to trainer Jef Bonde and a 2-year-old daughter of Gun Runner for $42,000 to Ron Tomsen. Tat gave Checkmate and Ganje three

of the top fve prices, and the Gun Runner was the sale’s highest-priced flly. She is a daughter of the unraced A.P. Indy mare Mahogany Lane. Te California Chrome colt, named Aloha Chrome, is out of the stakes-winning Archarcharch mare Honeymoon Cruise. Checkmate has done well at past California sales, especially with 2-year-olds. “I love the California January sale for selling early 2-year-olds,” Gonzalez said. “We have a good following of buyers who appreciate a horse with the balance of a solid foundation but also haven’t been pressed too hard yet. I’m very thankful for my clients that let me bring these nice horses to market. We had some very nice pinhook scores here today, and it’s a great A 2-year-old daughter of Gun Runner topped fllies feeling to start the calendar year at $42,000 on top.” Ganje also purchased Drizella, the top-priced older horse of racing age, for $35,000. Havens led consignors by gross, selling —Doug Burge 39 horses for a total of $355,300. Tat included several for Liberty Road Stables, Raboin Farms, and John and Allegra Ernst, as well as the complete dispersal of Harrington Racing. Shane Easterbrook’s Easterbrook Livestock Management sold the second-highest-priced horse, Prince Jimi, for $75,000. Kim Lloyd successfully bid that amount in the name of Sweetwater Trading for Dr. Patrick Sheehy’s Super Horse. Prince Jimi is a Cal-bred son of Jimmy Creed—Following a Dream, by Tiznow. Lloyd said that the colt would probably go to Penn National, where Sheehy’s longtime trainer, Carl O’Callahan, is based. “Ten the plan is to bring him back and hopefully run him in the stakes at Del Mar this summer,” said Lloyd. Terry Lovingier’s Lovacres Ranch was Andy Havens was the sale’s leading consignor

the second-leading consignor by gross, selling 25 for $253,900. Lovacres sold a 2-year-old Cal-bred son of Stay Tirsty to Bill Tomasic for $52,000. Te youngster is out of the stakes-winning El Corredor mare Tee Game. Tomasic, who lives in Chino, bought the colt with the help of trainer Steve Knapp. “Steve had checked him out very thoroughly,” said Tomasic. “We’re looking for a horse that’s ready to run as a 2-year-old. We’re California people, and he’s Cal-bred. Tat’s very, very important.” Added Knapp, “He’s a nice-looking horse. Te mama made $450,000 and has one baby who has made close to $70,000 already. Te demeanor of the horse was very nice. He was very calm, not nervous, and that’s a plus to start out.” Lovacres also sold the sale’s top-priced yearling for $40,000 and toppriced broodmare for $35,000. Dennis O’Neill bought the yearling, a Cal-bred daughter of I’ll Have Another—Light Striker, by Afeet Alex. Steve Moger bought the mare, Grace At Midnight. A 9-year-old daughter of Midnight Lute—Rosie’s Ransom, by Marquestry, Grace At Midnight is a half sister to stakes-winning Stilleto Boy. Just days earlier, Stilleto Boy had fnished third in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes Presented by 1/ST Bet (G1), behind Life Is Good and Knicks Go.

CTBA Trainer of the Year

Andy Mathis will be honored as CTBA Trainer of the Year

PAID TO DO THIS? FOR ANDY MATHIS, TRAINING IS A LABOR OF LOVE

BY JACK SHINAR

f there’s one thing Northern California trainer Andy Mathis knows about horse racing, it is that success doesn’t come easily.

Most racing followers would consider Mathis one of the up-and-coming conditioners on the Golden Gate Fields backstretch. Tat perception might actually be accurate in some respects, but his success has been no overnight story. In spite of his youthful looks, the former college baseball pitcher has been in the training game for more than 20 years. Mathis was just 22 and a couple of years out of City College of San Francisco when he obtained his California Horse Racing Board training license in 2001. It was a career slow to develop— while building his stable to its present size—after years of cobbling together a modest livelihood claiming cheaper horses with

It’s adorned with a few dozen photos of those early winners, mostly from county fairs. “Tat lasted for a long time,” Mathis said of the period. “But looking back today, for me it was the best way to do it because there was a bunch of bumps and bruises along the way. “At that time, I would have wanted a fast process and a barn full of horses,” he added with a smile. “But it taught me to kind of go through the whole process. It was not an overnight deal. I mean, you learn something new every day, but just to learn how to win and how to lose. Tings are going to go really good and things are going to go really bad, and ultimately it’s how you handle all of that. “So I think of those years of having a few horses, then half

My Fiona

THIRD CAL-BRED CHAMPION TO BE BROODMARE OF THE YEAR

M

y Fiona thrust herself into rarefed company when she was named 2021 Broodmare of the Year. She became just the third champion California-bred racehorse to go on to become a Broodmare of the Year, following Warren’s Veneda in 2020 and Variety Queen in 1988. Unlike her predecessors, however, My Fiona shot to stardom as a 2-year-old. Tus, she has been famous, especially in the pages of this magazine, for most of her 10-year-old existence. Variety Queen became a Cal-bred champion at 3 in 1979, while Warren’s Veneda earned her championship as a 5-year-old.

BY TRACY GANTZ

My Fiona won her Cal-bred championship at 2 in 2014. She has proved just as precocious as a producer. Her frst foal, produced when My Fiona was 6, is Fi Fi Pharoah, a Cal-bred daughter of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. Te very next year, My Fiona foaled Finneus, her frst by California leading sire Stay Tirsty. Both became stakes winners in 2021. Terry Lovingier, California’s leading breeder of 2021, is responsible for just about every facet of My Fiona’s existence. Her story began when he bought the Two Punch mare A Vision in Gray, in foal to Ghostzapper, for $18,000 at the 2011 Keeneland November sale. My Fiona arrived the following March, and from the beginning she

demonstrated a feistiness that would aid her racing career. Her personality reminded Lovingier of Fiona in the television show “Shameless,” prompting him to name her My Fiona. “Te character kind of rules the roost and runs the family,” Lovingier said, “and that’s what this flly did out in the pasture.” Lovingier raced My Fiona in partnership with Tom Beckerle and Amanda Navarro. Walther Solis trained her at 2, and later in her career she resided in the barns of trainers Bob Hess Jr. and Gary Sherlock. During her championship season, My Fiona won the California Toroughbred Breeders’ Association Stakes, Golden State Juvenile Fillies Stakes, and Soviet Problem Stakes, one at each of Southern California’s racetracks. She ran second in

California in 2018 and included My Fiona in the stallion’s frst California book of mares. Tat resulted in Finneus, and Lovingier has sent My Fiona back to Stay Tirsty every year since. Te mare has a 2020 colt, a 2021 flly, and was back in foal to the stallion for a 2022 foal. My Fiona’s Stay Tirsty flly has Lovingier especially enthused. “She had an unbelievably good flly by Stay Tirsty, one of the best fllies I’ve ever had,” he said. “I’ve never raised a flly that good.” Lovingier entered Finneus in the 2020 Fasig-Tipton California yearling sale, held at Los Alamitos. Finneus topped the sale at $200,000, purchased by Naseer Fasihuddin of San Diego. Fasihuddin was the colt’s majority owner when Finneus reached the races, though Lovingier and Navarro thought

so much of the youngster that they became partners in him as well. Solis trains him. Finneus broke his maiden in his second start and jumped right into graded competition. Tere he ran second to Pappacap in the Best Pal Stakes (G2) and second to Pinehurst in the Runhappy Del Mar Futurity (G1). Before the year was out, Finneus became a stakes winner in the Golden State Juvenile Stakes. He started 2022 with a good third in the California Cup Derby. He has already earned more than his purchase price, banking $288,366 through the Cal Cup Derby. Fi Fi Pharoah and Finneus could be just the beginning of My Fiona’s broodmare career. the Generous Portion Stakes and third in the Landaluce Stakes. My Fiona competed through her 4-year-old season, with six wins, one second, and three thirds in 16 starts for total earnings of $478,743. Tat kind of race record earned My Fiona a trip to Kentucky and a date with American Pharoah. Fi Fi Pharoah is from the stallion’s second crop. Because My Fiona foaled the flly in California and was bred back to Stay Tirsty, Fi Fi Pharoah is a Cal-bred. Fi Fi Pharoah has the same team behind her. Lovingier, Beckerle, and Navarro campaign her, and Solis is her trainer. Tird in her debut, Fi Fi Pharoah ran second in the Evening Jewel Stakes while still a maiden. It didn’t take the flly long to win her frst race, and she became a stakes winner in the June 19 Melair Stakes. Lovingier brought Stay Tirsty to

Golden State Series—Tiznow Stakes

Brickyard Ride scores by 71⁄2 lengths in the Tiznow Stakes

A NEW DIMENSION BRICKYARD RIDE STRETCHES SPEED TO A MILE IN TIZNOW BY EMILY SHIELDS

T

here is no question that over the last two years, Brickyard Ride has established himself as an immensely talented sprinter. At Santa Anita Feb. 21, the California-bred son of Clubhouse Ride— Brickyard Helen, by Southern Image, added a new dimension to his playbook. After winning sprint stakes races such as the 2021 Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint by 31⁄4 lengths, San Carlos Stakes (G2) by four lengths, $100,000 Tor’s Echo by 43⁄4 lengths, and then defending his title in the 2022 Cal Cup Sprint by 13⁄4 lengths, Brickyard Ride successfully stretched out to a mile in the $100,000 Tiznow Stakes. Per usual, the speedy 5-year-old broke

26

for Brickyard Ride’s career. “Te purpose of trying this was to give us options, and he came through,” Lewis said. “He’s obviously a very nice horse, so we’ll see what the future holds.” “Well, he always struck me as a twoturn horse,” Pais said after the race. “When we turned him out after Del Mar, I always had this race in mind. He’s got a high cruising speed, and the good ones usually do. Tey do it their way.” It was Brickyard Ride’s second try at a mile. Te frst was a non-starter as the colt was trying grass for the frst time and ducked through the rail in the stretch, leading to a “did not fnish” result. But Clubhouse Ride was a grade 2 winner at nine furlongs, and Brickyard Helen produced two other two-turn winners, Big Barrel and Scrappy Devil. Te Tiznow Stakes is named for the mighty Cal-bred who won two editions of the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), and Brickyard Ride obviously would have a long way to go to get to that level. But Pais had high praise for his chestnut horse. “I’m not saying he’s (their caliber), but horses like (Pegasus World Cup winner) Life Is Good and (Breeders’ Cup Classic winner) Knicks Go, when they go 46, it’s like another horse going 48.” Brickyard Ride may wheel back in sprint company or continue around two turns. Either way, he will be blazing the trail on the front end and trying to run his rivals of their feet.

He won geared down under jockey Juan Hernandez, 71⁄2 lengths clear of Touchdown Brown in second. Wilder Tan Most fnished third, followed by Peaceful Transfer and Seattle Bold. Te fnal time over a fast main track was 1:37.77. “He broke nice and I thought ‘Okay, perfect, he’s going to relax perfect,’ ” Hernandez said, “but then he felt the pressure from (Wilder Tan Most) and he started to take of. So, I let him go a little bit because sometimes when you do that, he relaxes. But today, when I gave him a looser rein, he took of.” Te victory increased Brickyard Ride’s record to 10 wins in 20 starts, with a second and two thirds, for earnings of $620,977. Te Alfred A. As Classic Moment and Bye Bye Bobby gave chase into the far turn, Straight Up G responded willingly under regular rider Ricardo Gonzalez, widening his advantage at the top of the lane and holding of his rivals by three-quarters of a length. Bye Bye Bobby and Classic Moment settled for second and third. “I’m really proud of the way he ran,” said owner Jim Rome of Jungle Racing. “We wanted to see how he would run outside of California; we wanted to try some open competition and see how he would measure up. And boy did he step up. He broke well, he wanted to up front, and he showed me a lot of heart.” Straight Up G stopped the timer in 1:42.96 on a fast main track. lying Buccaneer taught Glenn Porter a thing or two about patience. The California-bred son of Oats and Corn was Porter’s frst-ever claim back in 1987 at Turf Paradise. He couldn’t win in Arizona and ultimately ended up in Mexico at Agua Caliente, fnally breaking his maiden in start number 15. Te exploits of Flying Buccaneer were indicative of Porter’s early success with Toroughbreds. Porter, who had also purchased a ranch around the same time, had to wait a long time for his frst star. But Porter is no quitter. A hard worker, he owned his frst gas station in Palos Verdes at the age of 25, making him the youngest station owner in Southern Califor-

“I’m not an absentee owner—I work just as hard as any of the guys that work for me,” Porter said. “And if you keep doing well for your customers, they’ll be loyal to you.” Since that Flying Buccaneer claim, Porter has had success in the Quarter Horse game, doing well with Portland Meadows Futurity winner Babys Famous and sharp Los Alamitos runner Afre. But eventually Toroughbreds lured him to switch. “After the Quarter Horses are 2 or 3, there aren’t any big races or money,” Porter said. He started claiming Toroughbreds about a decade ago, but it wasn’t until he claimed Zuzu’s Petals that his story took a twist. Porter and friend Guy Taghavi secured the flly for $20,000 on April 21, 2017. “We had planned to continue racing her like all the other horses we claimed; there were good purses in optional claimers,” Porter said. “With her trainer Jef Mullins, we ran once at Santa Anita then waited for Del Mar, but she got hurt a little bit. Jef said, ‘Well, there’s your broodmare.’ ” Porter and Taghavi had been tossing around the idea of keeping a broodmare, but never pursued it. “It was sort of a dream not to keep claiming Toroughbreds and try to move them up the ladder, but to breed,” Porter said. Calling upon his sense of loyalty, Porter turned to Zuzu’s Petals’s co-breeder, Carol Lingenfelter at Poplar Meadows, where her stallion Bedford Falls was also standing at stud. “I’d never met Carol before, but we talked over and over on the phone,” Porter said. “I shipped Zuzu straight from Del Mar up to Sanger to be a mom, and everyone was happy about it. I kept hearing from people, even jockeys that had ridden her, how happy they were.” When it came time to choose a stallion, Porter turned to bloodstock agent Lisa Groothedde. “She sent me all of the

PNEUMONIA IN FOALS LEARNING TO RECOGNIZE AND TREAT RESPIRATORY DISEASES IN FOALS BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS

R

espiratory disease is fairly common in foals, and it is the second-leading cause of death in foals one to six months of age in the U.S. Pneumonia in foals has a tremendous impact on the horse industry. It can occur in the frst few days of life—especially if newborn foals don’t get adequate colostrum and passive transfer from the dam. Te immune system is important in preventing diseases such as pneumonia.

A foal’s immune status is largely acquired from the dam’s colostrum. Without adequate colostrum at birth, the foal is very susceptible to infections early in life. Pneumonia can also occur in foals up to a year in age. Dr. Bonnie Barr at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., says she sometimes sees very young foals with pneumonia, but often these cases are due to a septicemia in which the systemic infection settles in various parts of the body, including the lungs.

DR. BONNIE BARR

“In the slightly older foal—one or two months of age or older—Rhodococcus equi is probably the number one cause,” Barr said. “But we also see Streptococcus zooepidemicus as another cause of pneumonia. Sometimes we see viral pneumonias, but they usually end up with secondary complications and bacterial pneumonia as well.” Viral pneumonia is not responsive to antibiotic treatment. Te main aim in treatment is just good supportive care, such as via fuids and oxygen therapy. Antibiotics are generally given preventively, however, since there is a high risk for secondary bacterial infection—after the lungs are compromised by the virus. Occasionally, fungi might be involved in respiratory disease, usually occurring only in immune-compromised foals. Clinical signs of pneumonia include increased respiratory rate and efort, cough, nasal discharge, fever, and decreased appetite. Te foal also is generally not nursing. “For diagnosis, we do bloodwork, and we might see increased white cell count, increased fbrinogen, increased serum amyloid A, etc.,” said Barr. “Te veterinarian will also probably use ultrasound to check the lungs and might be able to see abscesses or other abnormalities or an increase in what we call comet tails. “If we see abscesses, we generally suspect Rhodococcus, but sometimes it might be a Streptococcus so we need to keep that in mind. We might do a tracheal wash to get a sample to culture, to see what’s in there. Ten we know which route to go on treatment and which antibiotic might be best.” Te best way to fgure out which organism is involved is to do a trans-tracheal wash and a culture on that fuid. “To obtain fuid from the trachea, we put a tube down the trachea to administer some saline solution and then aspirate it back out to get the sample for culture,” said Barr. “We also look at the fuid under the microscope for cytology. We stain it and look at how the cells stain, to see the size and shape of the bacteria. Tis might give us more clues about what’s there.”

A nasal discharge is an early clinical sign of pneumonia

Te veterinarian can look at this right after the fuid is aspirated from the trachea whereas the culture takes a couple of days to grow. Generally, you wouldn’t want to wait that long to start treatment. “Sometimes you don’t see anything on the slide, but it never hurts to look,” said Barr. “Based on what we see on the slide, we could recommend a certain type of antibiotic.”

Clinical signs of pneumonia include increased respiratory rate and efort, cough, nasal discharge, fever, and decreased appetite. Te foal also is generally not nursing. Tis decision for treatment would then be confrmed, or changed later, depending on the results of the culture. “With Rhodococcus, a foal may develop what we call extra-pulmonary lesions, such as abdominal abscesses or an infected joint,” said Barr. “If the lung infection becomes bacteremic (bacteria

in the bloodstream, traveling to other parts of the body), it may settle in other locations and produce more problems.” For diagnosis of respiratory disease, the veterinarian might simply rely on historical information. “If it’s a big farm with a history of Rhodococcus, the veterinarian may decide to start with an antibiotic more geared toward that pathogen,” said Barr. “If the farm has never had Rhodococcus before and it’s in a region where it might not be as endemic, the foal might be started on some other antibiotic. Usually an injectable broad-spectrum antibiotic is selected. Tis might be something like Excede (ceftiofur), especially if the veterinarian suspects a Streptococcus infection. “Te veterinarian might put the foal on a sulfa pyrimethamine combination. If we are more concerned about Rhodococcus, the best choice might be what we call a macrolide antibiotic, such as clarithromycin or azithromycin (years ago we used erythromycin), and then we monitor the response to treatment.” Occasionally, a newborn foal might develop aspiration pneumonia. Tis is usually due to a situation in which there is something else wrong with the foal and it’s not nursing. Maybe the mare died or is being difcult or doesn’t have any milk, so the owner tries to force-feed the foal and milk gets in the lungs. Te foal ends up with aspiration pneumonia. If the foal is immunocompromised due to not having enough antibodies from colostrum, this problem is compounded. “In this situation, we may be dealing with some other type of bacteria, such as Klebsiella or Enterobacter, E. coli or something else,” said Barr. “If the foal is on an IV catheter, you might go with an antibiotic like penicillin or gentamicin or maybe metronidazole. Some people will use a combination of sulfa trimethoprim or maybe amikacin or gentacin. Tey may want to use something that’s a little more broad spectrum because there are quite a few diferent types of bacteria that could be involved.”

If the foal is having trouble breathing or if the veterinarian wants to get medication directly into the lungs, a nebulizer (with face mask) might be utilized. Tis changes a liquid to a mist and allows the foal to breathe it. PREVENTION

Good herd health management is important in the prevention of foal pneumonia. “Tis includes making sure foals get adequate colostrum and are get-

ting their routine vaccinations and deworming, following AAEP guidelines for those,” said Barr. “A clean environment is also crucial.” Tis includes clean bedding and good ventilation in barns to minimize irritants such as dust and ammonia in the stalls. “If Rhodococcus is a concern, some people will spend the money to give foals hyperimmunized plasma when they are frst born, and might follow up with a 30-day plasma,” said Barr. “Tis has been shown in some studies to be benefcial, but other studies did not show any beneft. Tere are some better plasma products in the pipeline, but they are not yet available commercially. “To prevent Streptococcus infections, it is very important to make sure young foals get proper colostrum and that mares are properly vaccinated prior to foaling.” It is extremely important to monitor foals closely, especially very young ones. “It’s a good idea to take temperatures once or twice a day, making sure they are nursing, etc.,” said Barr. “Tis is just good farm management, paying attention, and noting anything abnormal like coughing.” Respiratory disease can progress swiftly, so you want to notice early signs and get on top of it quickly.

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through Feb. 21, 2022.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
