An exciting opportunity for breeders to participate in the success of the prepotent Danzig sire line, Cistron is one of four graded winners and 10 black-type winners from the frst crop of multiple Grade I winner The Factor, a Top-10 Sire in 2020 and the leading Sixth-crop sire with progeny earnings topping $30,000,000 in North America. Third, defeated less than a length in his Santa Anita stakes debut at 2, Cistron enjoyed a productive career winning or placing in 13 stakes from 5 ½ furlongs to 1 1/16 miles, including graded victories on dirt and turf with Triple Digit Beyers taking the Bing Crosby Stakes-G1 wire-to-wire and San Simeon Stakes-G3 following a 7-month layof. T

hree initiatives. Tree diferent groups. All three hoping voters will support them in 2022 and legalize sports wagering since the United States Supreme Court eliminated the federal probation in May of 2018. Only the tribal initiative known as the “Sports Wagering Regulation and Unlawful Gaming Act” has actually qualifed for the 2022 ballot and is the only one supported by the California Toroughbred Breeders Association. Te tribal efort includes tribal casinos and approved racetracks and is restricted to brick-and-mortar facilities. Te measure would impose a 10% tax on sports wagering activity conducted on track. Tribal governments would be required to obtain compact approvals in California to allow for new tribal gaming. Te California Solutions to Homelessness, Public Education Funding, Afordable Housing and Reduction of Problem Gaming Act was amended in September from the original title “Te California Sports Wagering and Consumer Protec-

tion Act” fled in August. It appears they forgot to add “world peace” to their title. Tis initiative, sponsored by card rooms and local governments, provides a 15% tax on activity, a $5 million initial licensing fee, and a $1 million renewal fee every four years. Te measure allows for mobile betting and authorizes the California Department of Consumer Afairs, beginning in 2023, to license an expanded number of “operators” to obtain a license. Tis measure also has a “conficting initiative” clause, which could invalidate all conficting initiatives should this measure obtain the most votes. It is important to note that this initiative and the Solutions for Homelessness and Mental Health Support Act have only been submitted for proposed title and summary to the state attorney general. Such title and summaries are not ofcial and will likely change from the offcial document prepared by the Attorney General. Te next step is gathering the required number of valid signatures in time to appear on the ballot.

Tis third proposed initiative is sponsored largely by DraftKings, Betfair, and BETMGM. Tis coalition claims to have raised $100 million to date for its efort and will likely have no problem gathering the signatures required to qualify. Te measure authorizes online wagering for tribes and/or partner with qualifed gaming entities. Tey propose to generate millions through a 10% tax on gross online gaming revenue and $100 million license fees. Te online negative impacts to racing resulting from these two initiatives cannot be overstated. Horse racing has benefted from its exclusivity for ADW betting online, and these proposals will diminish our market share with almost no beneft. It’s too soon to know what the 2022 ballot will look like, and some believe the competing efort is an attempt to get the legislature to step in and force a compromise ballot measure. I wouldn’t bet on the legislature solving this fght. One thing is certain, 2022 is a must-win for California racing.

Fred Carrillo and Daniel Cassella bred and raced Bordonaro, and Bill Spawr trained him. Now 20, the gelded son of Memo—Miss Excitement, by Rajab, earned $938,128 and won such races as the 2006 Ancient Title Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G1), two editions of the Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3), and the 2005 Vernon O. Underwood Stakes (G3). Bordonaro has now joined fellow Cal-bred stakes winners Amazombie and Soi Phet at Old Friends, making the journey across country in mid-September and settling in well. Prior to the trip, the gelding spent a few days back at Spawr’s barn at Santa Anita. Jon Lindo, a Toroughbred owner who has many horses with Spawr, reported that the entire barn enjoyed having Bordonaro there and “spoiled him rotten.” Chris Aplin, Spawr’s assistant, particularly loved having Bordonaro around. Aplin, who is also a photographer, put her photographs of champion Zenyatta into a book titled Lessons I’ve Learned From Z, which is available for purchase on the United Pegasus website (unitedpegasus.org) to beneft the organization. © BENOIT PHOTO

Bordonaro, the champion California-bred sprinter of 2005, is enjoying a long and well-earned retirement, thanks to a host of people who have made sure he is well cared for and content. He most recently moved to Old Friends in Kentucky after spending about fve years with the United Pegasus Foundation in California. Helen Meredith, president of United Pegasus, founded United Pegasus in 1994, and it is one of the oldest horse rescue operations in California. United Pegasus has cared for hundreds of horses, many of them Cal-breds, through the decades. United Pegasus keeps about 80 to 150 horses at any given time. Bordonaro Tose horses have been well cared for at a variety of facilities, and United Pegasus has announced on its website that it is building a new ranch on 52 acres in Tehachapi. Tat will allow United Pegasus to consolidate all of its horses at one location. Bordonaro began his retirement at another facility, and when it went into disrepair, Meredith brought him into the United Pegasus fold and has taken good care of him. Camino Del Paraiso, the brave California-bred whose recovery from a horrendous eye injury was the subject of a feature in the September issue of California Toroughbred, triumphantly returned to the races. In his frst start in nine months, he won the Sept. 6 Rolling Green Stakes, a race he also captured in 2020, at Golden Gate Fields. A gelding who has never liked the shoeing process, Camino Del Paraiso injured himself when he became upset before a scheduled farrier visit in January 2020. He fipped, injuring his left eye so severely that veterinarians thought he would lose it. But quick action by trainer O.J. Jauregui, with the support of owner Herb Moniz and a dedicated team at the Camino Del Paraiso University of California at Davis, saved the eye. An 8-year-old son of Suances—Loni’s Appeal, by Successful Appeal, bred by Red Baron’s Barn, Camino Del Paraiso sold for $5,000 at the 2014 California Toroughbred Breeders Association Northern California sale. Jauregui purchased him there from Harris Farms. In the 11⁄16-mile Rolling Green on the turf, Camino Del Paraiso sat in fourth under jockey Catalino Martinez and moved up to win by a neck over Jungle Cry in 1:42.70. Camino Del Paraiso has now won eight of 42 races for total earnings of $519,442. In addition to the two editions of the Rolling Green, the gelding also won the 2020 Joseph T. Grace Stakes.

Dr. Timothy Grande has been appointed to the new position of chief offcial veterinarian for the California Horse Racing Board. Grande is working with Dr. Jeff Blea, the CHRB’s equine medical director, to help increase safety of horses and riders at all California racetracks. “The CHRB created the COV position partly because the EMD position had expanded signifcantly and become very extensive,” said Grande. “Standardization is one of the COV’s principal objectives. For example, the entry review panel started at Santa Anita in 2019,

reviewing information on horses to determine whether they were ft to compete. I have been on that panel since its inception. Now we have added one at Los Alamitos and one for Northern California race meets.” Grande has worked for many years as an offcial veterinarian at Santa Anita and Del Mar. His racing background is extensive, having begun as a groom and hot walker. He returned to California backstretches as a racetrack veterinarian after his graduation from the University of California veterinary school in 2000.

In just his third start, California-bred 2-year-old FREE HOUSE won the $200,000 Norfolk Stakes (G2) during the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita Oct. 6, 1996. Bettors sent Free House off as the 9-1 fourth choice in the 11⁄16-mile race against odds-on Free House favorite Swiss Yodeler, who later became a major California sire. With Kent Desormeaux aboard, Free House dueled for the lead with Swiss Yodeler and then drew off to win by 31⁄2 lengths in 1:43.54. Zippersup closed for second, with Swiss Yodeler third. Paco Gonzalez trained Free House for owners John Toffan and Trudy McCaffery, who bred the son of Smokester—Fountain Lake, by Vigors. Free House won the following year’s Santa Anita Derby (G1) and placed in all three 1997 Triple Crown races.

When CALIFORNIA FLAG captured the $100,000 Morvich Stakes (G3T) Oct. 10, 2011, he became the frst horse to win the race three times. The California-bred 7-year-old speedster had earlier taken the event in 2008 and 2009. For the 2011 edition, California Flag dueled with Excessive California Flag Passion for the lead all the way down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course of about 6 1⁄2 furlongs. California Flag took the lead in midstretch and scored by a half-length in 1:11.91. Pat Valenzuela rode the son of Avenue of Flags—Ultrafeet, by Afeet, for owner/breeder Hi Card Ranch and trainer Brian Koriner. Also winner of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, the same year he was voted champion Cal-bred turf horse and co-champion Horse of the Year, California Flag today has a stakes named for him at Santa Anita, scheduled this year for Oct. 17.

Fellow Cal-bred Impressive Style set the pace, but Miss Lady Bug closed the twolength gap inside the eighth pole to win by a nose in 1:24.3⁄5. It was a Cal-bred trifecta, as Chargerette grabbed third. Impressive Style was disqualifed for inteference and placed third.Tommy Doyle trained Miss Lady Bug for owner Mrs. Paul Blackman. Mrs. H. Shafer Honored With James M. Wilson Award

PRESIDENT

Te vast improvement in horse safety at California tracks can be credited in part to research by Ph. D. candidate Sarah Shafer, who was granted the Louis R. Rowan Fellowship in Equine Studies at U. C. Davis in 2019 by the California Toroughbred Foundation. Shafer’s work has earned her the additional honor of Sarah Shaffer the 2021 James M. Wilson Award for the year’s most outstanding research report, published in the Equine Veterinary Journal. Her potentially accident-preventing discoveries focus on proximal sesamoid bone (PSB) fractures in Toroughbred racehorses. Te Center for Equine Health at the Davis School of Veterinary Medicine reported that previously there was no way to identify horses at risk for PSB fracture. Shaffer’s studies included discovery, characterization, and description of changes before such fractures, which put horses at risk for possible catastrophic accidents. “Sarah’s research fndings were key to developing injury-prevention strategies that contributed to the 41% reduction in California racehorse fatalities over the previous year,” said Dr. Susan Stover, who directed Shafer’s research at the J. D. Wheat Veterinary Orthopedics Research Laboratory. “Knowledge of the warning signs of imminent catastrophic fetlock injury allow for detection of afected racehorses and their rehabilitation—saving horse lives and preventing jockey injuries associated with racehorse falls.”

uyers took the slogan “It Pays to Own a Cal-bred” to heart at the Sept. 28 Fasig-Tipton California sale of fall yearlings and horses of all ages. Tey brought their money, and they bid enthusiastically for California-bred yearlings. Each of the 17 yearlings selling for $100,000 or more was a Cal-bred, including the $350,000 sale-topper, a daughter of American Pharoah. “It was really encouraging to see that the Cal-breds that were good physically sold really, really well,” said Boyd Browning Jr., president and chief executive ofcer of Fasig-Tipton. “We saw horses coming into the ring that brought two, three, or four times their reserves very consistently.” Te yearlings averaged $40,683, with

16

164 yearlings grossing $6,672,050. Te median was $20,000. Neither previous sale—the inaugural one in 2019 and the 2020 edition, which was afected by the pandemic—came close to that gross, average, or median. “Today was the most encouraging day we’ve had in California in a sales environment in the last three years that we’ve been involved,” said Browning. “Tere was a dramatic increase in the average, the median doubled from the sale last year, the RNA rate was down (to 24%). More important than that was just the enthusiasm and the energy that I think everybody could feel at the sale.” Eight diferent consignors sold the 17 six-fgure horses. Terry Lovingier’s Lovacres Ranch, which sold the sale-topper, had fve. Four came from Barton Toroughbreds, two each from Tom Bachman’s Fairview and Bruno DeBerdt’s Excel Bloodstock (as agent for PT Syndicate #1), and one each from Sue Greene’s Woodbridge Farm, Stormy Hull’s Critter Creek Farm, Pam and Neal Christopherson’s Bar C Racing Stables, and Kim McCarthy’s McCarthy Bloodstock.

Two of Lovingier’s top-priced horses owed something to Lovingier-bred My Fiona, a champion Cal-bred racehorse. She has produced two runners, the 3-year-old stakes-winning American Pharoah flly Fi Fi Pharoah and the 2-year-old graded stakes-placed Stay Tirsty colt Finneus, who topped the 2020 sale for $200,000. Both are Cal-breds. My Fiona’s third foal, a yearling Calbred son of Stay Tirsty, sold this year for $100,000 to Naseer Fasihuddin, who had purchased Finneus. Tom Beckerle, a partner with Lovingier and Amanda Navarro on Fi Fi Pharoah, likes that runner so much that he bought the sale-topper with Sandra Grey. “I’ve got some buddies who wanted to get an American Pharoah,” Beckerle said. “Tere will be about fve in on her. Fi Fi Pharoah has already made us a couple of hundred thousand dollars, and we think she’s going to do the same thing.” Te sale-topper is out of the unraced A.P. Indy mare Ez Indy. Te mare is a half sister to champion Banshee Breeze, stakes winner Unbridled Wind, and Indy’s Windy, the last-named the dam of multiple graded stakes winner American Anthem. Barton consigned the second highest-priced horse, a $300,000 daughter of Practical Joke—Miss Lavinia, by Speightstown. Trainer Brian Koriner purchased the flly for Samantha Siegel’s Jay Em Ess Stable. Te mare has also produced stakesplaced Arch Cat. “Samantha is very excited,” said Koriner. “She hasn’t bought any yearlings all year. She waited, and she’s very excited to get a

Fairview sold a son of Square Eddie—North Freeway, by Jump Start, for $200,000 and a daughter of City of Light—Gift of Glory, by Lookin At Lucky, for $170,000. Te Square Eddie colt not only was the highest-priced horse by a California sire, he is from a family of good Cal-bred runners. North Freeway’s 2015 colt by Acclamation, Take the One O One, was voted champion Cal-bred 3-year-old male of 2018. Square Deal, her 2017 gelding by Square Eddie, won the 2019 I’m Smokin Stakes. Boomer Bloodstock/Radley Equine purchased North Freeway’s 2020 Square Eddie colt. Craig Rounsefell represented Boomer Bloodstock and bought the colt with trainer Dan Blacker. “I was actually the underbidder on the brother two years ago to Simon Callaghan,” said Blacker. “Tis colt just looks solid soundness-wise, and soundness is so important these days. He looks like he’ll be a fun horse to have next summer.”

Blacker also liked that the colt is a Calbred, saying, “If he wasn’t a Cal-bred, I wouldn’t have bought him.” Barton, another major California sale supporter, sold a daughter of Palace Malice—Smiling Cruise, by Harlan’s Holiday, for $135,000 to Pete and Evelyn Parrella’s Legacy Ranch. “She’s just a real nice-balanced flly, looked the part, looks like a racehorse,” said Terry Knight, who manages Legacy. Parrella’s group was one of many who enjoyed the newly refurbished Derby Room, the Pomona advance-deposit wagering facility formerly called the Finish Line. Danzel Brendmuehl’s Classic Bloodstock bought the son of Nyquist—Soul Crusader, by Fusaichi Pegasus, for Don Cox’s Sasulito and Colleen Smith’s Breckenridge. Te colt is a half brother to stakes-placed Tere Goes Harvard. “We loved everything about him—Nyquist, California-bred, very athletic,” said Brendmuehl, who added that they might pinhook him to next year’s Fasig-Tipton 2-year-old sale. “California needs a 2-year-old sale,” she said. “Boyd Browning’s working very hard with Fasig-Tipton to make that happen. And if it happens, we’ll be here with that colt to top the sale.” Browning attributed the yearling sale’s strength to many factors, including a strong economy and increased handle and purses. “Tere’s a better positive vibe for the most part in the racing industry throughout the United States, and that’s certainly a factor,” he said. “Some breeders answered the call and supported us with higher-quality horses this year. Tere is still signifcant commitment that needs to be done by the stakeholders in the California Toroughbred industry—breeders, racetracks, those men and women who own horses, and those people who are involved with the industry.” DeBerdt’s Excel and Bachman’s Fairview are two consignors who have long supported California sales. Connie Swingle is the latest, following Grazen Sky and S Y Sky. Te flly is only 2, but she became a stakes winner in her third start, the $102,000 Generous Portion Stakes Sept. 3 at Del Mar. If Grazen Sky and S Y Sky are any indication, Connie Swingle has many more stakes wins and/or placings ahead. Grazen Sky won the 2015 Silky Sullivan Stakes and placed in seven other stakes while S Y Sky won the 2019 Monrovia Stakes (G3) and four other stakes and placed in fve additional stakes. Longshot Sally Stanford set the early pace of :22.23 for the frst quarter-mile and :45.04 for a half-mile while Connie Swingle tracked her in second. Wide into the stretch, Connie Swingle took over nearing the eighth pole and drew of to defeat Carmen Miranda by 31⁄4 lengths in 1:10.89. Big Novel fnished third. “She was running nice and easy, and when we got to the turn, I think she was playing with them,” Franco said. D’Amato completed the exacta with Carmen Miranda, another Alexander homebred. “I think she’ll run on, and the same for Carmen Miranda,” said D’Amato. “I think she’s just kind of dying for two turns.” Alexander likes to name horses for historical fgures. He turned to drag racing for Connie Swingle, a member of the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame and a male, despite the female-sounding moniker. “I was running out of war hero or baseball names for fllies, and Connie Swingle sounds like a girl’s name,” Alexander said. “Connie was a legend from drag racing’s most colorful era, the ’60s. He was a Choctaw Indian from Oklahoma—a tireless worker, ferce competitor, and the fastest top fuel driver I ever saw.” As for the equine Connie Swingle’s family, they are likely to produce even more runners. Alexander says that Sky Marni has a yearling flly and a weanling colt by Grazen, while S Y Sky has a Kantharos weanling flly and is in foal to Sir Prancealot. www.ctba.com ❙ October 2021 ❙ CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED

f well-tried aphorisms can be believed—and many actually can—then every pedigree tells a story and the mare’s family is stronger than the individual. Such tried and often true sayings lead us to want to know all we can about a given horse, especially a champion. But what if in the process of researching one champion, we fnd several others? Tis is what happens with Betty Derr, the third dam of the great California-bred

Swaps. She is beyond a doubt the queen of California classics. From the roots she so deeply planted in the breed come Swaps in particular, but also Iron Liege, Personality, and California Chrome. She was even a half sister to a Kentucky Derby winner, Clyde Van Dusen. Swaps, now long gone, shines brightest among Betty Derr’s relations, and as he appears in more and more pedigrees, he brings added respect to his own bloodline and to the family from whence he descends. Tat family earned its gold and

glory in the mid-1950s, but it shows no sign of slowing down with recent contributions such as California Chrome and Charlatan. Betty Derr’s is a history worth reading for the facts, but even more for recognizing her as the ingredient that made her a California classic. THE TAPROOT

When a flly from a farm’s foundation family arrives, that flly already has a pedigree that merits immediate confdence. But she still has to prove herself

on the racetrack. So when the flly Betty Derr, whose fourth dam, Wanda, “ran as though the ground wasn’t good enough for her,” came along in 1928, her work was cut out for her. Further, there is more to Betty Derr than the great Wanda. Her sire, Sir Gallahad III, also sired Gallant Fox, the only American Triple Crown winner to sire a Triple Crown winner (Omaha). Her broodmare sire is Uncle, a son of Star Shoot, who sired the frst Triple Crown winner: Sir Barton. Betty Derr’s second dam is by Planudes, a son of St. Simon (of whom it was said “having no faults, he handed none on”). Her third dam is by Loyalist, a son of Sterling (the same sire line as Star Shoot). And then there is Wanda, she a daughter of Mortemer, winner of the Ascot Gold Cup. Such lineage negated the validity of the infamous Jersey Act, which in 1911 Great Britain stated that no horse could be registered in the General Stud Book unless he could be traced via every line to horses already registered therein. Te law was largely written to protect existing English and Irish Toroughbreds from an infux of American runners due to the closing of New York racing at the time. When American horses showed that they were capable of not only competing with but also improving existing French stock, the Jersey Act was amended to qualify horses in which eight or nine crosses

could be traced for at least a century and for which turf performances of the immediate family could be shown as a warrant of pure blood. Such American horses would henceforth carry an “A” prefx. Te family from whence Wanda and Betty Derr descended was designated A-4 and was headed by the mare Fanny Maria. Betty Derr proved to have not only the necessary bloodlines but also the necessary

Betty Derr established a dynasty that not only refected her classic blood but also embellished it. ability. She won four solid stakes: Clipsetta Stakes, Debutante Stakes (both Churchill Downs and Washington Park versions), and Latonia Oaks. Ten she established a dynasty that not only refected her classic blood but also embellished it. However, she did not set the Kentucky Derby precedent for which she would eventually become known. Tat was already in place. Wanda’s daughter Urania, by Hanover, established a branch that eventually spawned the 1966 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Kauai King. Tis same branch had earlier produced Epsom

Derby winner Durbar and later would be responsible for champion Gulch, sire of Kentucky Derby and Belmont winner Tunder Gulch. Urania’s half sister Countess Wanda foaled Planutess, who in 1916 foaled the Uncle mare Uncle’s Lassie, who, in turn, produced Kentucky Derby winner Clyde Van Dusen, by Man o’ War, two years before producing Betty Derr. In addition to being the third dam of Swaps, Betty Derr is also the second dam of 1957 Kentucky Derby winner Iron Liege. Another Betty Derr daughter, Judy-Rae, is a three-quarter sister to Swaps’ dam Iron Reward, and later became the seventh dam of California Chrome. Tus the family, once banned from the General Stud Book, had established itself as a consistent producer of classic runners, both in America and overseas. More importantly, it proved at the highest level that not only did it belong with the best but that it could help to elevate underlings to that level. CALIFORNIA CONNECTION

Betty Derr was bred by H. P. Gardner and later sold to motion picture magnate Louis B. Mayer. It was Mayer who bred her to War Admiral, getting Iron Maiden, the dam of Iron Liege and Swaps’ second dam. Mayer sold Iron Maiden to W.W. “Tiny” Naylor, who bred Iron Reward (by Mayer’s stallion Beau Pere) from her.

Naylor in turn sold Iron Maiden to Elwood B. Johnson of Old English Rancho, who sold her once again—this time to Calumet Farm. From there Iron Maiden produced Iron Liege, the family eventually branching out to include such good horses as Reverse, Fair Ye Well, Kodiack, and Wood Green. Iron Reward, on the other hand, stayed in California, having been sold to Rex Ellsworth. Ellsworth would breed Iron Reward to his home stallion Khaled to get Swaps and other stakes winners Te Shoe and Like Magic, as well as 1962 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Track Medal. ANOTHER MAJOR CONDUIT

Another of Mayer’s mares and a daughter of Betty Derr, Judy-Rae, raced in his colors and won the Anita Chiquita Stakes. She was sold to Coldstream Stud

for $45,000, but did not reproduce her racing form. As a broodmare, however, she became a priceless gem. Coldstream bred Judy-Rae’s frst three foals, and they included the War Admiral flly Tulle, who is the ancestress of Broodmare of the Year Courtly Dee. Judy-Rae changed hands in 1951 at the Keeneland November sale, going to Millard Waldheim for $43,000. Judy-Rae’s Nasrullah daughter Judy Rullah, bred by Waldheim’s Bwamazon Farm, is a remarkable mare in her own right. Among her best ofspring are the brilliant but brittle Creme dela Creme and the outstanding broodmares Road to Romance (ancestress of multiple stakes winner Wickerr) and Rhubarb, whose branch includes stakes winner Bottle Top and Bottle Top’s classics-placed son Strodes Creek, the excellent producer Quarrel, and champion

handicap mare Cascapedia. Judy Rullah’s branch of the family more recently shows up in the pedigree of 2020 Arkansas Derby (G1) and Runhappy Malibu Stakes (G1) winner Charlatan. He is by Speightstown and traces on the bottom side to Betty Derr via California-raced Appealing Missy, his third dam. But Judy-Rae’s granddaughter Courtly Dee has put this branch of the family on the map to stay. Courtly Dee was bred by Donald Unger in 1968 and was far from successful as a racemare, earning only $19,426 in 33 starts. Finally, Lee Eaton claimed her for $15,000 for his Red Bull Stable, and the partnership bred Courtly Dee’s frst seven foals. In 1980, Red Bull consigned Courtly Dee to the Keeneland November breeding stock sale, where she was knocked down for $900,000 to the B.B.A., acting on behalf of the partnership of Helen Alexander, David Aykroyd, and Alexander’s mother, Helen Groves. In foal to Alydar at the time, Courtly Dee produced champion Althea the following spring. Courtly Dee did everything right for Alexander and company and had already been named 1983 Broodmare of the Year when her Forty Niner colt Twining became her eighth stakes winner with victories in the Peter Pan and Withers stakes. Courtly Dee thus found herself hard on the heels of the immortal blue hen Grey Flight, dam of nine stakes winners. But Courtly Dee did not just produce numbers. She produced quality as well. Tere is the brilliant flly Althea, who beat colts in the 1984 Arkansas Derby (G1), 1983 Del Mar Futurity (G2), and

Swaps began his stud career in Kentucky at Darby Dan Farm and later, when he was syndicated, moved to Spendthrift Farm, where he would take up sire duties alongside his old rival, Nashua. Te pair had strengths at stud, just as they had had at the racetrack. And both would remain in pedigrees for many generations due to at least one particularly strong descendant. In the case of Nashua, that horse is his daughter Gold Digger, a multiple stakes winner who ran second in the Kentucky Oaks. Gold Digger is far more famous as the dam of Mr. Prospector. Ensuring immortality for Swaps is his stakes-placed daughter Intriguing. A half sister to Poker, Seattle Slew and Silver Charm’s broodmare sire, Intriguing is also the dam of champion 2-yearold flly Numbered Account. Numbered Account carried Swaps “right to the stars” as old-timers are wont to say. Bearing a double of Numbered Account via his dam, Love the Chase, as well as direct descent from Betty Derr, California Chrome later duplicated his distant relation’s feat of winning the Kentucky Derby, then did him one better by taking the Preakness as well. SWAPS AT STUD

Swaps went to stud in an era when sires’ books were generally 30 to 40 mares. Tus, his ofspring total was only 16 crops of 430 foals. With stallions routinely siring well over a thousand ofspring in half as many crops today, his statistics are really quite impressive. In an absolute study of quality over quantity, 81% of his ofspring raced and 60% of them won. An excellent 8% won stakes (many top sires today get only 5%), and another 7% were stakes-placed. When the sun set on his career as a progenitor, his runners had banked $8,678,982. Today, we still fnd Swaps in the pedigree of truly great and infuential horses. Having retired as Horse of the Year in 1956, the same year he was champion older male, Swaps saw his share of very fne mares. From La Troienne’s

The following pages spotlight 15 Thoroughbred farms on the West Coast, each of which’s purpose is to produce healthy, strong and talented horses who can successfully represent the local breeding and racing industry in the future. The farms are diverse in size and scope and are situated throughout the Golden State—south from San Diego to north of San Francisco and from the coastal areas over to the desert regions. The services they offer also differ, offering the choice of small boarding and lay-up farms to major facilities with complete training centers.

ARROYO VISTA FARM Home of Texas Ryano, the only graded stakes winning stallion by Curlin standing in California.

A

rroyo Vista Farm is a new facility offering options for breeding, foaling, boarding, sale preparation and layups. The farm is located in Valley Center California on the property that was previously known as Valley Creek Farm. Standing at the farm is the stallion Texas Ryano, by Curlin, winner of the Gr. 2 Hollywood Turf Cup, with total earnings of $455,045. He won at distances of 1 mile to 1 1/2 miles. He is the only stakes winner by Curlin standing in California and is the halfbrother to 6 graded stakes performers via his dam Blending Element (IRE). Texas Ryano is represented by his frst crop to race in 2021 with his frst winner coming in a maiden special weight race at Del Mar on 9/2/21. The winner, a flly named Peppermint Flirt, bred by Williamson Racing LLC, is out of the Artie Schiller mare Dial a Date and won at the distance of one mile on the turf. Texas Ryano is currently ranked fourth on the California Freshman Sire List but the only stallion on that list to produce a 2-year-old winner going two turns. Texas Ryano was a classic distance stakes winner and it appears his offspring will continue his legacy. Arroyo Vista Farm is situated on 35 acres with irrigated pastures and grass paddocks for mares, weanlings, and yearlings. Our front paddocks are fenced with a combination of white vinyl posts and rails with v-mesh for added safety. The larger pastures also have v-mesh horse fencing. Currently there are two barns, an 8-stall foaling barn and a four-stall stallion barn. Additional facility plans include a Eurociser installation and small covered pens for layups. We are located just east of Escondido in Valley Center, a 45-minute drive to Del Mar and less than 30 minutes from San Luis Rey Downs. Santa Anita and Los Alamitos are also just 90 minutes away. Arroyo Vista Farm is managed by Miguel Jimenez who managed Ballena Vista Farm until it closed. He was mentored by previous Valley Creek Farm manager Leigh Ann Howard. Miguel leads a staff with a combined 80 years of experience in the thoroughbred industry. Dr. William Talbot is Arroyo Vista

Farm’s Veterinarian who also has many years of experience as an equine practitioner. Arroyo Vista Farm is owned and operated by Henry and Robin Williamson, longtime thoroughbred owners and breeders, who race their horses under Williamson Racing LLC. Henry has been around horses his entire life, frst experiencing the winners circle at Del Mar in 1972 when his father, Warren Williamson, won his frst race at the seaside racetrack. Current homebred runners Visitant and J.T.’s Watch have combined for six wins in 2021. Visitant, winner of $338,165.00, is by

Ghostzapper out of Peppermint Lounge by Distorted Humor. His wins include the Twins Spires Kentucky Cup Classic at Kentucky Downs and the Alcatraz Stakes at Golden Gate Fields. Also, he is graded stakes placed, ran second to Maxfeld in the Gr. 2 Alysheba Stakes (Gr. 2), defeating Gr. 1 winner Roadster and Gr. 2 winner Chess Chief. Current plans have Visitant continuing his racing career in 2022, with the possibility of joining Texas Ryano at Arroyo Vista Farm in the future. J.T.’s Watch, by Bold Chieftain out of Only a Moment by Bertrando is the winner of four races in 2021. He is racing at Golden Gate Fields and has won at the Maiden and allowance levels. Kevin was the manager of Vessels Stallion Farm for twenty-one years until assuming the role of farm manager for Ocean Breeze Ranch for two years. Tap Back will be new to the roster for 2022, who is a son of Einsten (BRZ) out of a Tapit mare, and was an extremely precocious two-year-old, breaking his maiden at Del Mar in a Maiden Special Weight and winning the Golden State Juvenile Stakes (Black Type). DAEHLING RANCH Owner Operators of Daehling Ranch

A

s summer comes to a close, we have a lot be thankful for in 2021. Although the COVID pandemic continues to affect many of our daily routines, race tracks have safely reopened, meets have resumed and earlier this year we added another crop of perspective race horses to the state’s Cal-Bred program. Anyone actively engaged in California’s thoroughbred breeding industry is acutely aware that the number of mares bred year after year is trending downward. While this appears concerning, it also highlights solutions and opportunities for our industry to grow.

Rumpus Cat, who entered stud in 2020, was recognized by Blood Horse as one of California’s best-bred stallions. Rumpus Cat is by champion and Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense out of Sweet Catomine who won over a million dollars and fve graded stakes races in her career. Rumpus Cat’s frst crop of foals are impressive and predominantly out of stakes won, placed or producing dams. Daehling Ranch also has the honor of standing Faversham who is the only full brother to two-time horse of the year California Chrome. Chrome’s $14 million success throughout his career is backed by a strong pedigree offered through Faversham. Their sire Lucky Pulpit and dam Love the Chase were both recognized as two-time leaders in California.

From my perspective, it’s critical that we begin to not just increase the number of equine athletes available in California but also build a strong foundation for new and younger individuals to enter the sport, both in ownership on the track and our state’s breeding herd. Although we have over 20 years of experience in the industry, Julia and I humbly and proudly represent the next generation of California thoroughbred breeders and owners. As a couple with a young family, we are eager to do our part to ensure this industry that we love dearly is here for our children. The experience and lessons learned by those who have gone before us are invaluable but must be coupled with a willingness to innovate by those who are taking the reins. Each and every segment of our industry will need to participate in this endeavor and we at Daehling Ranch stand ready to do our part. We continue to take every opportunity to improve the operation and position of Daehling Ranch to better serve thoroughbred breeders and owners in California. This includes upgrading our facility, the farm’s infrastructure and providing more direct care for our pastures that serve as the backbone of our nutritional and feeding program. Anyone visiting our farm will frst notice the abundance of lush irrigated pasture we have available to allow horses to simply be horses. We provide a setting that allow horses to grow and ultimately develop a good mindset that will better prepare them for their career as a race horse. We are blessed to be located along the Consumnes River which provides a sustainable source of groundwater to irrigate our pastures, even in the face of drought. All horses are supplemented with a grain ration developed by an equine nutritionist to ensure proper nutrients, protein and probiotics are received daily. Julia and I have also worked hard to help support and expand the number of well-bred stallions available in Northern California. First and foremost, credit and thanks must be given to all our stallion owners who are working hard to support and back their equine partners with quality mares. We would be remiss to not take a brief opportunity to also mention several of our new stallions we are pleased to offer for the frst time or who have recently been added to our lineup.

We are also pleased to announce that beginning in 2022 we will have the opportunity to offer Pontiff who was recently relocated from Washington state. Pontiff’s pedigree speaks for itself. By Giants Causeway and out of the stakes producing dam Preach, Pontiff offers the opportunity to harness genetics directly responsible for his half-brother Pulpit. Triple Crown winner Justify is in Pontiff’s immediate family along with Tapit. Last but not least, Florida-bred Sparticle who was the top progeny for Field Commission in 2018 has entered stud at Daehling Ranch. Before entering stud, Sparticle set the track record for six furlongs in a six length win at Penn National Race Track. These stallions join the venerable Jersey Town who continually ranks high on the leaderboard along with Mesa Thunder (a proven Sky Mesa colt), City Wolf, Coach Bob, and Fullbridled. Please visit our website to see more information on these stallions and their pedigrees as you begin to make breeding decisions for 2022. We are honored to carry on the farm’s foundation built by Julia’s father Joe and his passion for our great industry which he so willingly passed on to his family. For more information about our operation and further information on our stallions, please visit our website at WWW.DAEHLINGRANCH.COM. Also don’t hesitate to contact us directly at JOLDFIELD@DAEHLINGRANCH.COM.

Ranches prides itself that daily handling of the youngsters is a priority and continues through their entire weanling and yearling years. Sales Preparation Sales prep is a fne art that the team at E.A. Ranches has cultivated to perfection. Ranches have successfully graduated from all major sales nationwide. Lay-ups & Rehab Many prominent trainers and owners regularly send horses to E.A. Ranches for lay-ups and appreciate the choice of generous individual pastures, smaller grass paddocks, or runs with special footing in various sizes. Often they also rely on the highly skilled staf to care for post-surgical horses that require not only fulltime stall rest but also the meticulous administration of medications and treatments. E.A. Ranches ofers the full range of conservative techniques as well as cutting edge rehab methods, adjustments and diagnostics by an experienced vet. Retirement Racehorse retirement is a long-standing tradition at E.A. Ranches, started by its late founder, Ernest Auerbach, and continuing in the present. For owners who “want to do the right thing” by giving their old broodmare or injured racer a dignifed retirement, a couple of spacious pastures are set aside. Te retirees are checked upon twice daily during feeding time, and can live out their lives in a natural environment of stunning beauty while being well cared for. Put into service late in the summer of 2007, the 520acre layout includes the old Folgner Ranch and remains a work in progress. “The six-furlong training track is in full use, full time,” said owner Terry Lovingier. “We grow our own alfalfa and have large pastures.”

Lovingier is enchanted by the beauty of the setting. “I don’t like to brag,” he said, “but I think this is one of the prettier farms in California. We have all new fencing and the lay of the land is beautiful, set in rolling hills and full of beautiful old oak trees. We’re at 3,500 feet elevation and the horses love it. I’ve never seen happier horses, and training at an altitude is good for them, too.” Lovacres is a full-service facility, offering breeding, foaling, boarding, breaking, training and sales preparation, and will stand fve stallions for the 2022 season. Multiple grade 1-winning millionaire Stay Thirsty has been dominant the last three years. MILKY WAY FARM Located between Santa Anita and Del Mar

T

he 100-acre Milky Way Farm is located in Temecula Valley, a short distance from Santa Anita, Del Mar, San Luis Rey Downs and Galway Downs. The ranch features large 8 acres felds for broodmares and 3-4 acres felds for young horses to have as much exercise as possible. Because we live in drought ridden California, we have seasonal grass in all the pastures. Our philosophy is providing the best possible care for the horses and their owners at our full service facility. We strive to keep in close contact with our owners by welcoming their input into the wellbeing of the horses. We encourage them to visit them as much as possible. Milky Way Farm is always a work in progress. We completed a new viewing area for the stallions and added a new area to show the yearlings. We expanded our rehabilitation, layup program and layup paddocks. We have several options for care and stall rest: 24x24 ft paddocks and 100x100 ft paddocks for horses recovering from injury or just needing a little rest time. We have increased the area for pre foaling mares and a lighted mare cycling area for open mares. We have a large foaling area and excellent night staffs. We delivered 110 foals this year. The foaling stalls are 16x20 ft with constant monitoring. We completely disinfected after each foaling. Last year, we began Milky Way Farm, Agent to be able to represent horses at the sales held in California. We have a wonderful staff that works on sales preparation on the farm, advertising and presentation at the sale. The stallions had an exceptional year covering 225 mares. Our breeding program is handled by Dr. Celeste Martin and Dr. Jeff Moss from Temecula Creek Equine. Prior to coming to California, Dr. Martin was with Rood and Riddle in Kentucky. She brings a wealth of Thoroughbred knowledge to our farm. We are excited to add two wonderful stallions to our roster for the 2022 breeding season. SAWYER’S HILL is a Graded Stakes performing son of Spring At Last. A super update for Sawyer’s Hill is his half-brother YAUPON, who just won the Forego Stakes Grade 1. Yaupon’s breeding rights have been purchased by Spendthrift Farm for 2022 and AMERICAN PASTIME, a graded stakes performing son of Tapizar. While earning $280,035 in stakes competition, he fnished 4th in the Breeder’s Cup Sprint in 2017 with a speed rating of 118.

Circumference (IRE) by Gallileo, Heaven’s Glory (JPN) by Tapit, and Winning Cause by Giant’s Causeway, had winners this year.

ED MOGER JR. BY EMILY SHIELDS

T

rainer Ed Moger Jr. notes that he essentially walked out of high school and onto the racetrack. “I worked for Jay Mills in Washington for maybe one year, but pretty quickly I was training on my own,” he said. Moger saddled his frst runner in 1976, winning his frst race. He added three more wins that season with a diminutive stable. In the years since, he has seen considerable success, winning graded stakes races and reaching the $1 million earnings mark in 17 different seasons. Now, the 65-yearold California-based conditioner is working to attract brand new clients into the sport of horse racing. After getting his start in Washington, Moger moved to the Bay Area in 1990.

Trainer Ed Moger Jr. has been an integral part of the California racing scene since 1990

He currently trains in both Northern and Southern California, with about 40 total head on the track at any one time. An active member of the racing community, he has served as the president of California Toroughbred Trainers and on that board for 15 years. As could be expected for one so involved in the game,

Qiaona ran in 23 stakes races over six seasons, winning the $300,750 California Breeders Champion Stakes in 2013 and the $100,500 California Distaff Handicap nine months later. “She was a nice one,” Moger said. “We ended up selling her to a breeder in Kentucky when she retired because she was slowing down

Horses’ limbs are their bread and butter, so problems that arise in that area, such as cellulitis, should be treated promptly and aggressively

ellulitis is an infammatory process of the skin and deeper tissues, and it is commonly associated with bacterial infection. In horses, cellulitis usually appears as a severely swollen limb and typically involves only one limb,

Dr. Callie Fogle of North Carolina State University says that cellulitis or a horse with a severely swollen limb can be a diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma for veterinarians. “A puncture, tendon or ligament trauma, or an infected joint can be masked by a very swollen lame leg,” 52

Fogle said. “It can also be difcult to isolate the type of bacteria causing the cellulitis, and even with appropriate, aggressive therapy, this infection sometimes does not respond quickly or the swelling may not resolve.” SIGNS AND IMPORTANCE OF DIAGNOSIS

“Often these horses present with acute, severe swelling, usually afecting an entire limb,” Fogle said. “Tere are some other things that could present this way, or problems that could be masked by the severe swelling. When a horse owner notices acute, severe swell-

ing, it is important to have a veterinarian examine the horse and look for other possible problems. “Radiographs and ultrasound are commonly performed to rule out a fracture and to look for sepsis or infection in a joint. It would be important to rule those things out before beginning treatment for a cellulitis. “Imaging would also help us look for an abscess that might result from the bacterial infection. Another useful diagnostic test might be a culture of the serum that is oozing from the skin, or to culture a subcutaneous biopsy of deeper tissues.

CAUSES

Acute cellulitis in horses is most commonly due to bacterial infection, usually with something like Staphylococcus aureus or Staphylococcus intermedius, or Streptococcus. Tese are common bacteria that are often found on the skin, and they’ve simply found a break in the skin to infect deeper tissues. “Occasionally, cellulitis can be due to infection with Corynebacterium or Clos-

“Te infection in deeper tissues of the limb can result in major tissue damage, so cellulitis is not necessarily a less severe disease. But the treatment would be diferent from some of the other possibilities, like fractures or soft-tissue trauma.” Cellulitis is most common in a hind limb, but it can also occur in a front leg. “Te classic form of cellulitis is unilateral, afecting just one limb, but it can afect multiple limbs,” said Fogle. “Te horse may have a fever and an increased heart rate. Often the swelling is frm and hard, and the leg is hot. It is usually very painful to touch. Tere may be breaks in the skin that ooze serum. Tese breaks can be caused by a precipitating trauma or from just the stretching of the skin due to the severe swelling. “Tese horses are generally very lame, but often the pain occurs when advancing the limb rather than from standing on that leg. It’s difcult or painful to move the limb. Generally, the horse will bear reasonable weight on the affected limb, when not being asked to move, compared to a non-weight-bearing lameness that is commonly seen with a fracture or a joint infection.” Occasionally—and more often with chronic rather than acute cellulitis— the veterinarian might use scintigraphy, in which a radioactive compound is injected into the subcutaneous tissues. “Te purpose of this imaging technique is to evaluate circulation of the distal limb—and see how well the lymphatic and venous system are working to return the blood and fuid from the distal limb,” said Fogle. “Often with cellulitis, particularly with chronic cellulitis, the function of the venous and lymphatic systems can be severely impaired.”

Cellulitis, a common bacterial skin infection, most often affects a hind limb in horses, but it can also occur in front limbs

limb before, that suddenly develops an acute, severe swelling of a limb and doesn’t respond very quickly to aggressive treatment, can develop changes in the limb that predispose to future bouts of cellulitis. Tis may take diferent forms. Some horses may have a chronically thick leg that feels hard and fbrous, like scar tissue. Tat limb may always carry a bit of swelling and look just a little thicker. “Other horses resolve the swelling but seem more likely to develop subsequent episodes of acute, severe swelling of that leg. We think that these repeat episodes may be due to scarring and permanent impairment of the venous and lymphatic systems in that limb. Te acute bacterial infection can start that process, and once those systems are impaired, the horse is less able to fght bacterial infections in that limb. Te skin barrier to bacterial invasion in that limb is not as good as in the other limbs. Tat limb is more vulnerable to infection.” Owners of a horse with chronic cellulitis might notice that even a tiny abrasion, small scratch, or scab on the skin can precipitate another bout of cellulitis, with the leg once again becoming swollen and painful. “Even a small amount of bacteria is capable of starting an infection,” said Fogle. “Te horse is unable to mount an appropriate immune response in that limb because of the impairment of venous and lymphatic drainage.” TREATMENT

If left untreated, cellulitis can cause serious problems, including lasting lameness

tridium or a gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli,” said Fogle. Acute cellulitis can be a bit diferent from chronic cellulitis, in which a horse sufers from repeated episodes of severe, painful limb swelling. “Te swelling with chronic cellulitis may also difer from that with acute cellulitis, as it is commonly thought to be more of a primary infammatory process, with less contribution from bacterial infection of the deeper tissues,” Fogle said. “A horse that has never had a swollen

“It is crucial to treat acute cellulitis right away and be as aggressive as possible, within the owner’s fnancial ability,” said Fogle. “Sometimes there are severe complications, especially if treatment is not begun immediately with aggressive broad-spectrum antibiotic coverage. Most of the time this will entail intravenous antibiotics and use of a non-steroidal anti-infammatory medication like phenylbutazone to try to address pain and infammation in that limb. “Steroids are commonly used by veterinarians to address minor distal limb swellings, but we can run into trouble with steroids to treat severe cellulitis because they can efectively mask whether or not we’re successfully resolving the bacterial

ly,” said Fogle. “Often the antibiotic we choose is something we think will work, but with cellulitis we sometimes fnd that our frst choice may not be the right choice. We might have to change after we get the culture results back. Or, if we don’t get a positive culture for bacteria and the horse is not responding as hoped, we may end up making another educated guess, using another antibiotic in an efort try to get the swelling down as fast as possible.”

LYMPHANGITIS VS. CELLULITIS

Cellulitis is marked by fever, swelling, infamed skin, and pain when touched. Often blisters or pus-flled bumps appear

infection in the limb. Short-term steroid use with a bout of acute cellulitis is okay, but you wouldn’t want to use it very long. Steroids are not routinely part of my treatment regime for severe cellulitis. “Along with antibiotics and NSAIDs, we also use bandaging and supportive treatment to help reduce the swelling in that leg. Cold-water therapy is helpful, whether it’s one of the fancy boots that recirculates cold water, or just cold water from a hose. Cold saltwater therapy in the form of an equine saltwater spa can be extremely benefcial in quickly reducing the limb swelling and improving venous and lymphatic fuid return from the limb.” Aggressive, prompt treatment is important to prevent laminitis, reduce the risk of deep-tissue necrosis, and reduce the risk of developing permanent damage to the circulatory system in that leg. “Te longer the leg stays swollen, the more risk for complications,” said Fogle. “Horses can develop laminitis as a secondary complication of cellulitis. It’s usually a support-limb laminitis (from too much weight on the normal leg), but it can also be laminitis in the afected leg.” Getting the horse comfortable quickly on the limb with cellulitis is crucial, through medication and supportive therapy to reduce the pain and swelling. “Horses can have further problems if the bacterial infection does not stay confned to that limb and goes throughout the body,” said Fogle. “Te horse can become very sick from systemic infection (sepsis or bacteremia). Horses can also develop superfcial and/or deep necrosis of the tissues anywhere within the afected limb. Often this is in the fetlock or pastern area, where massive amounts of tissue slough away. Tis problem may also accompany bone infection or tendon/ligament infection or joint infection. Tese are all risks with severe cellulitis, but are more likely in cases with a delay in the start of therapy.” Treatment of acute cellulitis can be frustrating for both owners and veterinarians, particularly when the symptoms are not resolving as quickly as everyone might like. “It can be hard to choose an antibiotic before we have a culture, but we don’t wait for the culture results to come back because we need to start treating quick-

“Classically, we think of lymphangitis as something that has a breed predisposition, commonly afecting draft horses or cold-blood breeds,” said Fogle. “It can afect horses of other breeds. Lymphangitis and cellulitis can both afect lymphatic drainage to the distal limb, particularly in chronic or recurrent cases. Lymphangitis is more likely to be bilateral, however, affecting both front legs or both hind legs or even all four limbs. Usually, the hind limbs are worse, but we do also see cases in which the forelimbs are worse. “Te swelling is generally in the distal limbs. It can look a little like stocking up because the swelling is most dramatic in the lowest part of the limb and is not an acute process, like we fnd in cellulitis. With cellulitis, you suddenly fnd the horse with a huge leg, but with lymphangitis it’s more insidious and gradual and is slowly progressive. “Te legs may have some scabs or scratches (pastern dermatitis) on the back of the fetlocks and pasterns, as well as frm, fbrous nodules. Tose crusts, ulcerations, and nodules may be a sign that the lymphatic drainage is not efective. Like a horse with chronic cellulitis, a horse with lymphangitis is also unable to fght infection or mount a good response against invading bacteria in the distal limbs. “Tese horses tend to have low-grade infections in the skin in areas where the lymphangitis is afecting the distal limbs. Te swelling doesn’t go completely away with exercise, like it would in a horse that is simply stocked up (distal limb edema). “Horses may stock up, especially in the hind limbs, if they are accustomed to being out moving around and are then confned overnight in a stall or small pen.

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through Sept. 26, 2021.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
