question that we all ask ourselves is, “How do we get new owners into Toroughbred racing?” It’s a topic that has been at the forefront during my decade in the business, and it’s a question for which there has not, to my mind, been a satisfactory answer. Like many of you, I was introduced to racing at a young age, 10 years old, when my dad had an extra ticket to the Big Fresno Fair (which wasn’t so big then). I fell in love immediately and can’t comprehend why everyone doesn’t love it. We can’t all be so lucky. I recently got an inkling that the ownership problem is diferent than I had realized. An acquaintance called and wanted to take his family to Del Mar. He is a successful, intelligent, and sophisticated businessman, but, as he had never been to the races, he found the whole idea of taking his family too daunting on his own. I helped them get a shaded table at Del Mar and gave them detailed instruction on what to

do—down to the last Delmargarita. I handicapped the card and emailed my picks, which included six winners. (Tat never happens went I’m betting my own money.) Monday morning my phone rang with my excited acquaintance now referring to himself as “friend.” (Funny what a few winners will do.) He told me that even before they started winning, they were having a great time and couldn’t wait to go back. More on point, he started asking me about our stable, how I got started, what are the costs, and ended by saying, “My wife and I really want to buy a horse to race.” So in a week or two we will be visiting Tom Clark at Rancho San Miguel to look over our horses. Knowing Tom, we’ll also look over some stallions and may “accidentally” see a yearling or two. Ten we will lunch while I help them create a plan to get started. I am strongly suggesting they start by claiming. Who knows where they will go from there? Tere is an obvious point, but I

suspect most members encourage their non-racing friends and acquaintances to try a day at the track. What I hadn’t grasped is how overwhelming it might be for someone who watches the Kentucky Derby once a year to make the jump to attending races. If I hadn’t walked this family through every step of the process, they would have gone to the beach. Instead, they did not feel they were walking into a completely unknown world, and as a result we have new fans and might have future CTBA members. Our racing facilities do a good job of shepherding the potential converts once they get in the gate. Te question is, how to get them in the gate? How do we remove the “daunt” for the maiden racing fan? I suppose the grassroots campaign I inadvertently waged might be a good start because today I received a call from a mutual acquaintance asking for the same treatment: Six winners and all.

Te California Toroughbred Breeders Association will participate in the National Toroughbred Racing Association Legislative Action Campaign’s ¼% Check-of Program, which supports the NTRA’s federal lobbying eforts. Te CTBA’s participation began at its Aug. 10 Northern California sale and will continue at its January mixed sale. Under the program, buyers and consignors/sellers at CTBA sales may elect to have .25% of the sale price of each horse donated to the Legislative Action Campaign. Tis percentage equals $2.50 for every $1,000 in sale price. Te CTBA joins Keeneland, Fasig-Tipton, Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. and the Washington Toroughbred Breeders and Owners Association as Toroughbred sales companies that participate in the campaign’s fundraising eforts. “Te CTBA recognizes the importance of having the NTRA’s skilled and consistent presence in Washington, D.C., on federal legislative matters,” said Doug Burge, president of the CTBA. “We are glad to be able to help support the NTRA by ofering our buyers and sellers the opportunity to contribute to the voluntary ¼% Check-of Program.”

Ferraro Receives Pincay Award

Dr. Gregory Ferraro, the chairman of the California Horse Racing Board and a veterinarian for more than half a century, received the Laft Pincay Jr. Award at Del Mar Aug. 21. Te award, for those who have served the sport with integrity, extraordinary dedication, determination, and distinction, is named for the retired Hall of Fame jockey, who annually presents the award. Ferraro, 75, a native of San Francisco and a graduate of the University of California, Davis and the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, worked as a veterinarian and a surgeon on Ferraro Southern California racetracks for 27 years. He later served as director of the Center for Equine Health at UC Davis for 17 years, promoting research and education in equine medicine. Te list of accomplishments during Ferraro’s career includes designing and developing the horse ambulances that are used on North American tracks and, in partnership, developing a splint that can be applied to stabilize lower leg injuries in horses. Ferraro was among the frst to adapt human arthroscopic surgical techniques to horses. He cofounded the Southern California Equine Foundation and served for many years as a trustee for the California Toroughbred Foundation. “I can think of few people who ft the requirements for this award better than Dr. Ferraro,” said Pincay. “He has been a champion for horses and horse people throughout his life, and his mark on our game will go on and on. He most certainly deserves this award.”

SANTA ANITA PURSES TO INCREASE Santa Anita and the Thoroughbred Owners of California announced that purses at the Santa Anita autumn meeting, which opens Oct. 1, will increase 10% for all overnight races. It will be the third consecutive race meeting at the track to see a purse increase. “This is a very signifcant development, and we want to thank everyone at TOC for helping to make this happen,” said Chris Merz, Santa Anita’s director of racing and racing secretary. “To be able to offer a purse increase for the third meet in a row clearly demonstrates we are trending in the right direction, and that’s important when owners and horsemen are making plans, not only for racing but breeding as well.” The “Ship & Win” program will also continue at the fall meeting. It provides a $3,000 bonus and a 35% increase in purse earnings for any horse that has not run in California for one year. Additionally, any new out-of-state horses coming to Santa Anita that meet requirements or have made their frst start in the Del Mar Ship & Win program remain eligible for the same benefts in their frst start at Santa Anita.

COHEN TO TOBA BOARD California owner/breeder Tim Cohen was among those elected to the board of trustees of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. He joins Barbara Banke and Carrie Brogden as new trustees serving three-year terms. Brant Laue was re-elected chairman, and re-elected to three-year terms were current trustees Greg Bensel, Robert Edwards Jr., Tanya Gunther, and Walker Hancock. Tim Cohen Cohen is a principal in his family’s Red Baron’s Barn, founded by his father, Jed, and Rancho Temescal, the family’s California farm based in Piru. The stable has raced numerous graded stakes winners, many purchased in Europe. Rancho Temescal stood Suances in the state, and the Cohens have bred such good California-breds as Camino Del Paraiso (a son of Suances) and Edwards Going Left.

Centenarian Shear Retires

John Shear, the 100-year-old longtime paddock captain at Santa Anita, announced his retirement on social media July 26. Employed at Santa Anita since 1961, Shear became a beloved fgure there. Track ofcials and horsemen praised him for jumping in front of a loose horse running toward a young girl just outside the Santa Anita paddock in 2011. He fell, sufering multiple fractures to his pelvis, hip, back, and cheekbone, and experienced internal bleeding. Remarkably, he was back at work in less than a year. Shear Orphaned as a young boy in London and wounded by German artillery in World War II, the diminutive Shear became an exercise rider, groom, and assistant trainer after initially aspiring to be a jockey.

Ruler of Dubai in Graduation Stakes and the I’m Smokin Stakes

10 YEARS AGO California-bred RULER OF DUBAI won his two stakes in back-toback fashion at Del Mar in 2011. First the 2-year-old gelding captured the $100,000 Graduation Stakes Aug 3, and then he returned to add the $100,000 I’m Smokin Stakes Sept. 5. Following a head victory in the 51⁄2-furlong Graduation under jockey Garrett Gomez, Ruler of Dubai led almost from the start of the six-furlong I’m Smokin, with Mike Smith in the irons. Ruler of Dubai dueled early with Inquisitive Son, and though odds-on favorite Champions Gate rallied from last, he couldn’t stop Ruler of Dubai, who scored by 31⁄4 lengths in 1:09.42. Rousing Sermon was a head back of Champions Gate in third. George Papaprodromou trained Ruler of Dubai for owner Harout Keshishian. Trainer Julio Canani bred the son of Tribal Rule—O K Topless, by Old Topper.

Pontiff, a winning son of multiple leading sire Giant’s Causeway and a half brother to major sire Pulpit, has moved to California to stand at Daehling Ranch for the 2022 breeding season. Formerly at stud in Washington, Pontiff will stand for $2,500. Bred in Kentucky by Claiborne Farm and sold for $310,000 as a Keeneland yearling in 2011, Pontiff was rated highly enough by original trainer Dale Romans and former owner Donegal Racing to contest Gulfstream Park’s Pontiff $1 million Florida Derby (G1) in his third lifetime start as a 3-year-old maiden in 2013. Following an unplaced fnish, Pontiff won on dirt in Oklahoma and on turf in Minnesota and Texas. He retired from racing in 2017 with three wins and 17 placings from 35 career starts and total earnings of $126,481. Pontiff is out of Preach, a grade 1-winning daughter of Mr. Prospector. Preach is also the dam of successful sire Pulpit, whose sons at stud include multiple leading sire Tapit. Warlock Stables owner Tim Floyd manages the 11-yearold stallion for a partnership that now includes Daehling Ranch owners Justin and Julia (Daehling) Oldfeld and California Chrome’s former co-owner Perry Martin.

YEARLY TOUR was one of many good California-breds produced by John and Betty Mabee’s Golden Eagle Farm. She won seven stakes throughout her career, her fnal one and frst graded win coming in the $125,000 Palomar Handicap (G2T) at Del Mar Sept. 7, 1996. The third choice in the feld of eight, Yearly Tour broke out of the starting gate on top under jockey Chris McCarron and led throughout the 11⁄16 miles on turf. She defeated Slewvera by a half-length in 1:42.56, with Real Connection third. Dave Hofmans trained the 5-year-old mare for the Mabees. The daughter of Half a Year—Victorian Village, by L’Emigrant, started one more time for a record of 10 wins, six seconds, and fve thirds in 24 starts and earnings of $573,848. Yearly Tour placed in seven other graded events.

California-breds took both divisions of the Del Mar Futurity Sept. 15, 1971, when the race attracted so many that it had to be split. MACARTHUR PARK won the frst division, while D. B. CARM proved victorious in the second. D. B. Carm was lucky he didn’t have to face MacArthur Park, having lost to that colt already in the CTBA Sales Stakes and De Anza Stakes during the Del Mar meeting. Bill Shoemaker rode MacArthur Park, and they completed the 71⁄2 furlongs on the turf in 1:29. Tommy Doyle trained MacArthur Park for Mark Three Stable. Old English Rancho bred the son of First Balcony—Betty’s Fortune, by Conjure. D. B. Carm and jockey Fernando Toro turned in the same time of 1:29 for their division. John Canty trained D. B. Carm (Top Gallant II— Radio’s Sue, by Radiotherapy) for owner/breeders Mr. and Mrs. S.N. Simmons.

■ Mr. Big Moves to Legacy Ranch Mr. Big, whose offspring include California-bred champion Big Fish, is moving to Pete and Evelyn Parrella’s Legacy Ranch in Clements. A 2022 stud fee has not yet been announced. George Krikorian raced Mr. Big, a winning son of Dynaformer—Fashion Delight, by Fappiano, and initially stood him in Kentucky. Mr. Big is a half brother to graded stakes winner Magnifcience. Since Krikorian moved Mr. Big to California, the stallion has produced several good Cal-breds. Big Fish earned his championship last year, when he captured the Del Mar Juvenile Turf Stakes, and this year he added the California Cup Derby. Mr. Big’s other Calbred stakes winners include Big Sweep, Big Returns, and Big City Lights.

Memoriam

B. Wayne Hughes B. Wayne Hughes, who raced such champions as Authentic and Beholder, many based in Southern California, died Aug. 18 at his Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky. A major philanthropist, Hughes, 87, was also a generous supporter of his alma mater, the University of Southern California, as well as the founder of Public Storage. Hughes and his family moved to Southern California when he was a child, and he frst attended Santa Anita with his father at age 11. Hughes grew up in El Monte, and he won a scholarship to USC. Later he pioneered the development of the storage business by creating Public Storage, opening the frst one in El Cajon, Calif. Those early days at Santa Anita remained with Hughes, who eventually became a racehorse owner. He celebrated his 50th year in the business last year, fttingly by winning the Kentucky Derby with Authentic. A son of Spendthrift stallion Into Mischief and trained by Bob Baffert, Authentic was owned by a partnership that included MyRacehorse Stable, which offers microshares in horses. Spendthrift has encouraged many people to become interested in racehorse ownership by partnering with MyRacehorse on several horses. Hughes purchased runners at California sales during his early years in racing. He moved to Kentucky after purchasing the historic Spendthrift Farm in 2004. One of the frst stallions Hughes stood at Spendthrift was Malibu Moon, a Hughes homebred trained by Mel Stute. A successful sire, Malibu Moon died this past May at age 24. Into Mischief is another Hughes runner who has developed into a leading sire. Under the tutelage of Richard Mandella, Into Mischief won the 2007 CashCall Futurity (G1) at Hollywood Park and the 2008 Damascus Stakes at Oak Tree. Mandella also trained champion Action This Day for Hughes. But the best-known collaboration between Hughes as owner and Mandella as trainer is Beholder. An earner of more than $6 million, Beholder won four Eclipse Awards, two editions of the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1), and the 2015 $1 Million TVG Pacifc Classic Stakes (G1) against males. Hughes received numerous honors, including the 2020 Galbreath Award from the University of Louisville. The Los Angeles Times reported that Hughes donated more than $400 million to USC, almost all of it anonymously. After Hughes’ youngest son, Parker, died in 1998 at age 8 from leukemia, Hughes worked tirelessly to help fund research for a cure for childhood leukemia. Hughes’ survivors include his wife, Patricia; his son, Wayne Jr.; his daughter, Tamara Gustavson; and four grandchildren.

Anna Dahlgren, who received the California Toroughbred Foundation’s Louis R. Rowan Fellowship in 2017, is about to complete her Ph.D. at the University of California, Davis. Te training Dahlgren has received will support her long-standing interest in improving the health of Toroughbred racehorses and contributing to the industry that Louis Rowan cared about so passionately. Working with UC Davis professors Drs. Fern Tablin and Carrie Finno, Dahlgren investigated the underlying genetic cause for atypical equine thrombasthenia (AET), a heritable platelet dysfunction that causes prolonged bleeding following injury. Te potential role for this disorder in delaying wound healing could have a signifcant impact on the Toroughbred industry. Dahlgren graduated with her B.S. degree in biochemistry/molecular biology from Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn., prior to pursuing her Ph.D. at UC Davis. Troughout her Ph.D. training, she has not only researched the genetic basis of AET, but also investigated the efects of micro-dosing of erythropoietin in racing Toroughbreds to identify a biomarker for drug testing. “Anna has done a tremendous amount of work during her Ph.D. to discover inherited and induced hematologic disturbances in Toroughbred horses,” said Dr. Finno, her primary mentor. “We are so proud of all she has accomplished and her dedication to improving the health of the Toroughbred breed.” Upon completion of her Ph.D., Dahlgren will be pursuing post doctorate training at a laboratory that uses a zebrafsh model to study the efects of various genetic mutations on bleeding disorders. She hopes to extend her investigations of AET using this well-described animal model and then work in academia long-term, contributing to the feld of animal genetics.

Te California-bred daughter of Lucky Pulpit—Lady Railrider, by Ride the Rails, has seven lifetime victories, four of them having come at Del Mar. She broke her maiden there in 2017, then added an allowance optional claiming race in 2018. Pulpit Rider ran second by a neck in the 2019 Solana Beach Stakes, but was ultimately disqualifed and placed sixth to give her Del Mar record its lone blemish. As if to avenge herself, Pulpit Rider has won the last two editions of the Solana Beach. After scoring in the 2020 edition by a nose as an 11-1 shot, she returned Aug. 15 to defend her title with yet another nose victory. Pulpit Rider took the $150,000 turf race over Nardini, with favored Warren’s Showtime third, much as favored Mucho Unusual had fnished in 2020. Tis time around, Flavien Prat was aboard Pulpit Rider for trainer Mike Puype and guided her back to last in a feld of six before starting her late rally. Pulpit Rider got up for the win in the fnal strides, stopping the clock in 1:34.21 for the one-mile distance on the turf. Her 2020 efort, which had come under jockey Juan Hernandez, clocked in slightly slower at 1:34.46. “She gives a good account of herself every time,” said Puype. “Te record speaks for itself. She’s healthy; she’s sound and not showing she’s nearing retirement.” Pulpit Rider, a second-generation homebred for Larry and Marianne Williams, hails from a family of top-class Cal-breds. Dam Lady Railrider, who earned $603,041 and is a half sister to $451,081-earner Unusually Green, was a fve-time stakes winner and nine times stakes-placed, although never at Del Mar. Te mare’s second foal, the Unusual Heat flly Fiery Lady, was placed in stakes at both Golden Gate Fields and Santa Anita. Pulpit Rider came next, followed by

Going back further, Pulpit Rider’s third dam, Cal-bred Glorious Day, was stakesplaced in 1995 while Glorious Day’s full sister Starolamo was a multiple stakes winner, including at Del Mar in 1994. One of Glorious Day’s half-siblings, stakes-placed Casa Key, produced English and German stakes winner Celestial Key as well as multiple stakes-placed Bounding Boldly. Pulpit Rider had a lot of family history to live up to when she frst hit the track, but the bay flly blossomed quickly. At 3, she won the $196,000 California Cup Oaks at Santa Anita and the $100,000 Campani-

le Stakes at Golden Gate Fields. She was stakes-placed as a 4-year-old at Santa Anita in 2019, and now sports a record of seven wins, a second, and fve thirds in 29 starts for earnings of $563,177. Although both Unusual Heat and Lucky Pulpit have died, Lady Railrider has had other options. She produced a Rousing Sermon flly in 2019. Now named Lady’s Sermon, that flly debuted with a victory sprinting at Golden Gate May 6. Lady Railrider produced a Tamarando flly earlier this year and was sent to Kentucky to be bred for the 2022 season.

Case in point: Te $94,000 Graduation Stakes for 2-year-old California-breds and California-sired runners Aug. 8 drew six horses, four by Stay Tirsty. After two scratches, three Stay Tirstys remained in and took the top three spots: Rock N Rye, Trip to Spain, and Mr. T’s Tirsty. Terry Lovingier, who brought Stay Tirsty to California to stand at his Lovacres Ranch, bred Rock N Rye and Mr. T’s Tirsty and owns both in partnership. Lovingier spread around his Stay Tirsty 2-year-olds in early August. He ran Finneus and Tirsty Always in the six-furlong Best Pal Stakes (G2) Aug. 7. Finneus fnished second to Pappacap, with Tirsty Always fourth. “Finneus is a long, big-jumping horse,” said Lovingier, who thinks that colt will

Rock N Rye is also out of a Lovingier homebred mare, Discreet Dee, a daughter of Discreet Cat. Lovingier purchased Cricket Wicket, who was carrying Discreet Dee, for $25,000 at the 2009 Keeneland November sale. Discreet Dee had started just three times, with one third. Discreet Dee’s frst two starters, Dee Way to Go and Empire Wicket, won multiple races. Both are Cal-breds by Empire Way bred by Lovingier. Rock N Rye is Discreet Dee’s frst foal by Stay Tirsty. With just four in the 51⁄2-furlong Graduation, straight wagering was limited to win and place. Rock N Rye was sent away as the 7-10 favorite. Te quartet raced close together out of the gate and down the backstretch. Trip to Spain led initially, but then Mr. T’s Tirsty on the rail took the lead. Rock N Rye raced in third, with Northvale Road alongside of him. Trip to Spain poked his head in front in the turn. wner/breeder Nick Alexander and trainer Steve Miyadi decided to promote Lieutenant Dan to graded company for the $101,500 Green Flash Handicap (G3T). Te California-bred gelding never finched as he made the transition with ease at Del Mar Aug. 22.

Lieutenant Dan won his comeback race, a fve-furlong allowance/optional claiming event July 23. He scored by 11⁄2 lengths as the 3-1 favorite with Geovanni Franco aboard. Miyadi admitted that he worried Lieutenant Dan might bounce, coming back in the fve-furlong Green Flash a month later. “I didn’t train him particularly hard for (the July 23 race) because I was thinking about this race, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well he ran,” said Miyadi. Regular rider Franco returned for the Green Flash. Bettors sent Lieutenant Dan of as the 2-1 favorite against seven rivals that included two-time stakes winner Gregorian Chant and Collusion Illusion, the

Lieutenant Dan has always come through. Te 5-year-old consistently earns a paycheck, with a record of seven wins, three seconds, and four thirds in 15 starts and now with earnings of $543,740. When the gelding needed a break last year, Alexander and Miyadi gave him a year of, from mid-2020 until this year’s summer Del Mar session. “Dan had front-end issues that Steve gave lots of time,” said Alexander. “Credit Steve with an awesome job bringing him back slowly.” 28

Collusion Illusion fnished seventh. “Since he’s come back from his layof, he’s more pufed up,” said Franco. “He’s doing good now. When I made the lead in the straight, I wasn’t worried about the others behind me coming to get us. But I wasn’t going to wait for them either.” Lieutenant Dan’s previous stakes victories have come in Golden State Series races. He won the 2019 Echo Eddie Stakes and Real Good Deal Stakes on dirt and the 2020 Sensational Star Stakes on turf. He also won on Golden Gate’s Tapeta surface. By Alexander’s successful California sire Grazen, Lieutenant Dan is out of the Indian Charlie mare Excusabull, a minor stakes winner in Arizona. All eight of the mare’s starters have won, with Cal-breds Hunger and Joe Jackson earning six fgures. Excusabull has a 2021 colt by Grazen and is back in foal to that stallion. Alexander says that this may be the last foal for 19-year-old Excusabull. “She’s really a sweet old mare,” he said. Camino’s Comeback DEVOTED OWNER SPARES NO EXPENSE TO RETURN VENERABLE WARRIOR TO RACING

n a chilly day in early January, O.J. Jauregui had just pulled onto the I-80 freeway a halfmile from his Golden Gate Fields stable when he received the sort of call on his mobile phone that no horse trainer ever wants to get. Stable star Camino Del Paraiso had injured his left eye in an accident, and it looked bad.

Scheduled for shoeing early that Jan. 3 afternoon, the 8-year-old bay freaked out after being led to the farrier’s shed row. He plowed into a couple of barn walls attempting to fee and lost his footing. “He had hurt everything; he fipped over and it was so quick,” 30

Jauregui said. “He went right over and when he did, his eye caught on something and that’s how it all happened.” Arriving a few minutes later, Jauregui said, “I knew this wasn’t good. I couldn’t see his eye at all. It looked to me like it had been turned inside out.” Assessing the horse’s condition, Dr. Kim Kuhlmann, Jauregui’s veterinarian, advised that if they wanted to save the injured eye, they needed to get him to the University of California, Davis large animal hospital as soon as possible. Teir concern was understandable. Camino Del Paraiso, owned by Herb Moniz’ Paradise Road Ranch, is certainly one of the greatest success stories in the history of the California Toroughbred

He’s the most successful horse that Moniz and Jauregui, who has been training since 2005, have had. A standout on turf, the big gelding realized his full ability in 2020, winning consecutive black-type stakes at Golden Gate and placing in three grade 3 events—the San Francisco Mile at Golden Gate and the San Luis Rey and Tunder Road Stakes at Santa Anita Park. Bred in California by Red Baron’s Barn, the son of Suances out of the Successful Appeal mare Loni’s Appeal is not only one of the most popular horses on the track’s backstretch, he’s also known as the coolest one in Jauregui’s 25-horse stable. “Nothing bothers him; he’s calm and collected,” said Moniz. “You walk up to his stall and he’ll put his head on your shoulder. Always. He’s just a joy to be around.” But his easy-going nature dissolves when he’s being shod. “He’s always been nervous about the shoeing; he doesn’t have the best feet in the world, that’s why,” Jauregui said. Two years ago they started tranquilizing Camino Del Paraiso to relax him during his farrier visits. Tat had worked—but not this time. On that January morning, Jauregui phoned Moniz with the bad news. Moniz recalled: “O.J. told me, ‘He’s really hurt. He might lose his eye. Te vet says the only thing to do is ship him to Davis, but it’s going to be expensive.’ And I said, ‘Are you kidding me? Let’s go right now.’ So we took him up that day, and they operated later that day.” Te 45-minute drive by horse van to Davis was well worth it, as the eye was saved. Dr. Bridget Nottle, the UC Davis resident veterinarian who headed the team that performed the surgery, called the result “quite spectacular.” “Te eye’s orbital was smashed, basically obliterated,” she said, adding that the eyeball itself had sunk into the socket as a result of the blunt trauma the horse experienced in the fall. Te intricate surgical procedure involved relocating the eye to its proper alignment, repairing multiple orbital fractures, and separating and repositioning the muscles around the eye.

Nottle noted that although eye injuries in farm horses are quite common, surgeries like this one are unusual because in most instances, the easier option is to remove the eye and suture it closed. “In this case we had a willing owner who really wanted to save the horse’s eye,” she said. “It all went pretty good, better than we anticipated. “Within three to four days, he could follow motion, and it just got progressively better. We kept him here for about a week.” Te vision in Camino Del Paraiso’s eye might not be back to the level it was before the accident, “but it will work well for the rest of his life,” Nottle added. Te fractured orbital needed time to heal and for the pain to subside. However, Camino Del Paraiso, wearing goggles to protect his bandaged eye, was also sufering from neck and back injuries. Moniz, who lives in San Ramon in Contra Costa County, moved his star horse to nearby Rancho San Nicolas, a farm and Toroughbred layup facility in the Northern California town of Brentwood. Former jockey Bobby Gonzalez operates the ranch, and he oversaw Camino Del Paraiso’s recovery for the next fve weeks. “When he came to me, he was bad body sore,” said Gonzalez. “He had a bad back, and when you tried to touch him there, he would shy away. He had such a bad trauma, you couldn’t even walk by him because he would spook. He thought you were going to do something to him.” A massage therapist eventually was able to overcome that, Gonzalez said. As the soreness slowly subsided, Camino Del Paraiso was introduced to a 24’ x 24’ pen to move about in. He was soon rolling around, a sure sign he was rebounding. “After that, he became a diferent horse,” said Gonzalez. “His appetite improved, and he put on a couple of hundred pounds while he was here.” Happy and healthy again back at the track, Camino Del Paraiso was nearing a return to competition at press time. Since June 6, he had recorded published workouts for nine consecutive weeks, usually in robust style. He drilled six furlongs in 1:133⁄5 Aug. 1 over the Tapeta surface at Golden Gate. Jauregui said his horse galloped out in 1:25 and change and fnished well,

pronouncing him ready for a start. A prep race over Tapeta in August was expected, followed by a run in the Rolling Green Stakes at 11⁄16 miles on the grass on Labor Day, Sept. 6. Camino Del Paraiso scored his frst career black-type win in last year’s Rolling Green, stalking the pace throughout before kicking home gamely to win by one length. His career record stands at 7-12-4 in 41 lifetime starts. Asked about his plans for an abbreviated season, Jauregui said, “He’s an 8-yearold now, so health is a big key. He’s just gotten better (throughout his career), so I wouldn’t be surprised if he did really great this year, too. But after what he went through, I have to be more cautious, maybe not put too much on him. Tat’s why I told Herb, ‘Let’s try to stick with Golden Gate. Let’s not worry too much about Del Mar (or Santa Anita).’ Te plan here is just to get him back.” Troughout his career, Camino Del Paraiso has been something of a hardluck horse—as evidenced by all his second-place fnishes. At nearly 1,200 pounds, he’s a solid individual, which led his connections to geld their feisty charge early in his training. ago. He named Camino Del Paraiso after his former breeding ranch, Paradise Road, which was located south of Stockton near Lathrop, because he felt this horse was special. Te facility closed in 2018 to make way for a housing development, but its namesake just keeps on going. “Your whole life, you just wish for a Saturday horse, and he’s been that,” Moniz said. “Winning two stakes races in a row, how many horses do that? He’s been our shining light.” If the comeback doesn’t work out, Moniz

added he won’t be disappointed. “Te postscript to this story is I have a walnut ranch up in Vina (of Highway 99 south of Red Bluf), and when he retires he’s going to go up there and chase cows,” said Moniz. “He’s going to get to be a horse. We won’t run him for a claiming tag. If he can’t run at the stakes level where he’s at, I’ll take him up there and turn him loose. It’s an old dairy farm, 120 acres. Te paddock is about four acres, and it has cows and stuf and that’ll be his job, to terrorize the cows.”

uyers looking for competitive California-breds can fnd plenty of prospects in the catalog for the Fasig-Tipton California fall yearling sale, which this year has added an all-ages segment. Many of the state’s leading sires are well represented, and full and half siblings to many recent Cal-bred stakes winners are also on ofer. “We are very pleased with how this catalog has come together, especially from a pedigree point of view,” said Mike Machowsky, Fasig-Tipton’s California representative. “Sire power represented among the yearlings is very strong—an exciting mix of leading sires both locally and nationally, and strong representation from promising frst- and second-crop yearling sires.” Stay Tirsty and Mr. Big are two California sires whose ofspring have made headlines at California tracks. Stay Tirsty has 23 yearlings and Mr. Big has 14 cataloged in the Fasig-Tipton sale. Stay Tirsty’s frst Cal-breds are 2-yearolds this year, and they sold well at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton sale. Finneus, by Stay Tirsty out of Cal-bred champion My Fiona, topped the sale at $200,000, and he is already a graded stakesplaced winner, having fnished second in the Best Pal Stakes (G2). Terry Lovingier’s Lovacres Ranch has consigned a full brother to Finneus (hip #21). Not only has My Fiona produced Finneus, she is also the dam of Fi Fi Pharoah, a Cal-bred daughter of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and winner of this year’s Melair Stakes. Other Stay Tirsty yearlings in the Lovacres consignment include hip #246, Bus Buzz, a colt out of Cal-bred champion Lost Bus, and hip #106, Tapatio Leo, a half brother to Cal-bred champion Cholula Lips. Lovacres has also cataloged the only ofspring of American Pharoah in the sale. Hip #196 is a daughter of the champion out of the unraced A.P. Indy mare EZ Indy, a half sister to champion Banshee Breeze. Several consignors are bringing sons and daughters of Mr. Big. Kim McCarthy’s McCarthy Bloodstock has two out of mares who have already produced good runners by the stallion. Hip #13, Big Celebration, is a flly out of the City Zip mare Misszippityslewda, making her a full sister to multiple stakes winner Big Sweep. Hip #32, Big Tech, is a full brother to graded stakes-placed Big Book, being out of the Holy Bull mare Novel Twist.

Te mare has already produced Cal-bred champion California Diamond, a son of Harbor the Gold. Andy Havens’ Havens Bloodstock Agency has Big Way, hip #48, a son of Mr. Big—Quick Chick, by Orientate. Stanford is currently the leading California frst-crop sire, and he has eight in the catalog. Tey include hip #19, a Cal-bred colt out of the stakes-winning Jump Start mare Mrs. Began. Adrian Gonzalez has consigned him through his Checkmate Toroughbreds, which is also ofering yearlings by such California stallions as Danzing Candy and I’ll Have Another as well as a weanling from Sir Prancealot’s frst California crop. John Harris’ Harris Farms has also consigned yearlings by major California stallions, including Smiling Tiger and Danzing Candy. Harris has the only yearling by champion Acclamation. Hip #11 is a Cal-bred colt by that sire out of the unraced Rhythm mare Miss Rhythmic, the dam of stakes winner Blues Blaster. Square Eddie was pensioned last year, so those cataloged in the Fasig-Tipton sale are some of the last of his ofspring that will be available. Eight Square Eddie yearlings are in the catalog, including hip #30, consigned by Tom Bachman’s Fairview. Te Cal-bred colt is out of the stakes-winning Jump Start mare North Freeway. She is the dam of Cal-bred champion Take the One O One (by Acclamation) and stakes-winning Square Deal, a son of Square Eddie and thus a full brother to hip #30. Fairview topped the inaugural Fasig-Tipton yearling sale in 2019. Tis year’s Fairview consignment includes Cal-breds by City of Light, Lookin At Lucky, and Smiling Tiger.

hen owners were allowed on the Del Mar backstretch this summer after the COVID restrictions of 2020, Jerry Weseloh breathed a sigh of relief. He could fnally again visit California-bred Brandothebartender at trainer Craig Dollase’s barn. “I’m going to be the biggest barn groupie this year,” Weseloh told Dollase. Weseloh would have camped out at the Dollase barn even if 8-year-old Brandothebartender weren’t having the best season of his career. But now the San Diego native, who owns the gelding with four friends, has even more reason to visit. And since he and his family had recently sold their automotive dealerships, he has more time for his role as chief barn groupie. Dollase has trained several good runners for Weseloh and his partners in Flawless Racing. It’s an enthusiastic group that enjoys claiming horses and has had much success with just a few runners.

Weseloh attributes almost all of it to Brandothebartender, a $40,000 claim at Del Mar in 2018 who subsequently has won four stakes and banked a career total of $772,864. Flawless Racing began in 2015 with Weseloh, Joe Letizia, Tim Aldrich, and Brian Flanagan. Weseloh and Letizia have been friends since childhood, Aldrich is Weseloh’s brother-in-law and a former business partner, and Flanagan is a business vendor who had become a friend. “We had no clue what we wanted to call ourselves,” said Weseloh. “I started playing around with letters of our frst names and last names, and the only word I could come up with was F for Flanagan, L for Letizia, A for Aldrich, and W for Weseloh. I didn’t want to call it Flawed Racing, so we called it Flawless.” All four being from San Diego, the partners were also Chargers football fans. Aldrich chose the Chargers’ royal blue and gold for their silks. Flanagan eventually branched out on his own, but continued to own horses with

the other three. Once they chose Dollase as their trainer, Mike Jarvis, a longtime client with Craig and, before that, Dollase’s late father, Wally, joined them on all of their horses. Jarvis came up with the idea of adding a Celtic trinity knot, which often symbolizes infnity, to their silks. Weseloh’s desire to own racehorses dated back to when as a young boy he accompanied his father, Ben, to Del Mar. “I have four older brothers and one older sister,” said Weseloh. “My dad liked horse racing, and none of my siblings really ever took to that. I guess he fgured he had one last shot, so he used to take me down quite a bit when I was little.” Weseloh, now 53, remembers as a teenager seeing Calbred Best Pal win the inaugural Pacifc Classic at Del Mar in 1993. It gave him a thrill 28 years later to have Cupid’s Claws compete in what is now the TVG Pacifc Classic (G1). Te partners along with Joe Masino’s Masino Racing Stable claimed Cupid’s Claws for $50,000, and the gelding won the 2020 Tokyo City Cup (G3) in his frst start for them. In the Pacifc Classic, Cupid’s Claws fnished unplaced. “He was just in over his head,” said Weseloh. “Tat was too much to ask of him. It wasn’t his fault—he tried as hard as he could. But that was so much fun. Never in any of our wildest dreams a year ago did we think we’d be running in that race.” Other memorable horses Weseloh saw include Cigar, Winning Colors, and Alysheba. He has a special fondness for Davie’s Lamb, whose stakes victories include the

1987 San Clemente Stakes at Del Mar. His father had an opportunity to buy into the flly, but his mother, Pat, was “not excited” Jerry remembers, and Ben passed on the opportunity. Te partners celebrated vociferously, and Weseloh ordered a large win photo that he says will never leave his wall. Ten came Brandothebartender, a then 5-year-old son of Tribal Rule—Frysland, by Stravinsky. Te gelding appealed to others as well, resulting in a six-way shake. “Right below our box is where they have the shake,” said Weseloh. “All the trainers were there. Tey pulled the pill, and Craig had no reaction. I saw a couple of trainers drop their head and start walking. thebartender, he won the California Flag Handicap at Santa Anita. “Tat time we were completely over the moon,” said Weseloh, who told his wife, Mary, that he wanted to display large photos of the race as well as the trophy. Little did he know that eventually Brandothebartender would start winning at a clip that would strain their available space. Tis year Brandothebartender has added trophies in the Sensational Star Stakes, Crystal Water Stakes, and California Dreamin’ Stakes. He almost always fnishes in the top three, and his dramatic comefrom-behind style has earned him a legion of fans. Weseloh credits not only the gelding but also Dollase and the trainer’s entire operation, including groom Angel Estrada. “He’s Craig’s #2, though Craig’s barn isn’t the size where he needs an assistant trainer,” Weseloh said. “Everybody does everything.” Tat included Estrada’s accompanying Code Duello, a new claim, to Golden Gate Fields. Te 3-year-old colt fnished second in the Aug. 14 Robert Dupret Derby in his frst start for them. Meanwhile, Weseloh continues his pilgrimages to Dollase’s barn, bringing carrots for the horses and donuts or other treats for the employees. And when Brandothebartender indicates that he’s done racing—something he has shown no signs of yet—Weseloh has already made arrangements to send him to Old Friends in Kentucky. “I want him to just do nothing—just go be a horse and have fun the rest of his life,” said Weseloh. “If we can do that for him, we’ll feel like we did it the right way.”

DEALING WITH CRIBBERS MAKING THE MOST OF A BAD HABIT BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS

he sound of a cribbing horse is unmistakable—and annoying—and many horsemen have been frustrated trying to halt a cribber. Horses kept in unnatural environments, such as confnement in a stall, and subjected to the stress of performance careers seem to be the ones that most often resort to stereotypic, repetitive behaviors such as cribbing, weaving, or stall walking. Te cribber grabs a horizontal surface (fence, manger, stall divider, water trough—whatever is handy) with the upper incisors, arches his neck to more easily open the throat, and swallows air with a grunting sound and a backward pull of the head.

A horse that’s been cribbing for several years tends to wear down the upper incisors and to develop thicker muscles under the neck. Some cribbers lose weight because they’d rather crib than eat. Many horses that crib will keep the habit even when turned out to pasture. People try various ways to halt this activity, such as covering stall surfaces with rounded metal edges that are harder to grab or using cribbing straps or collars. Te strap is fastened around the throatlatch and adjusted to just enough tightness to cause discomfort when the horse cribs—making it painful for the horse to tense the muscles that retract the larynx. Some straps are ftted with a piece of metal or stif leather under the throatlatch. When the horse arches his neck to suck

in air, the strap tightens and the point of the metal or stif leather jabs him, the pain making him put his head forward. Tese straps are temporary solutions. Horses resume cribbing whenever the straps or collars are removed. Te cribbing strap/collar can wear hair of the throatlatch, often to the point of creating sores if it is not frequently checked and adjusted. A strap can also pose risk if it catches on something. Surgery to remove portions of muscles on the underside of the neck that are used in cribbing is sometimes done to keep a horse from retracting the larynx to suck air, along with a neurectomy to remove a small portion of the nerves on both sides that innervate the largest of these muscles. But these “fxes” could be temporary if the muscles or nerves regenerate. With the difculty in halting cribbing activity, many equine behaviorists are looking at this “bad habit” in a different light. Most people just try to give these horses other outlets for their energy and frustrations so they don’t have to crib all the time.” Being outdoors at pasture can help. However, with some horses’ careers and life style, it can be hard to change their management enough to make a big diference.

What we feed can make a diference in whether a horse starts cribbing or whether a cribber is stimulated to crib. “Many horses that crib have ulcers, even if they aren’t showing signs of ulcers,” said Munsterman. “Keeping them on feeds that help reduce or prevent ulcers is recommended.” A feed that works well is alfalfa hay because it is high in calcium and protein and has a bufering efect on stomach acid. Forage also takes longer to eat than a concentrate meal and gives the horse more to do. Forage is always better for the horse than concentrates unless you have an elderly horse with poor teeth that has a hard time eating forage or horses that must have more calories than forage can provide. For horses that get bored, using a slow feeder that slows down hay consumption gives them more to do throughout the day. “Tis is another way for the horse to express his oral fxation, by continually nibbling hay,” Munsterman said.

Having a buddy or companion is often the best change in management for a horse that’s been confned by himself. Social interaction is a natural way of life for horses, and they are happiest and content when they have other horses around. “We are pretty sure the cribber isn’t going to teach the others to crib, so putting him with other horses can be very helpful,” Munsterman said. Horses that roamed freely probably never cribbed. Te risk came with domestication, confnement, and the artifcial conditions in which we keep horses, as well as the work they do and the stress they experience. “I have one horse that never lived in a stall but still cribbed,” said Munsterman. “Te best thing to do is try to keep them busy, fnding ways to try to distract them from cribbing,” Munsterman added. “If they are out at pasture and doing jobs and a moderate amount of work, there is less time for them to crib.” If they are a little tired from work, they might just want to rest and relax instead of engaging in cribbing activity or other stereotypic behavior. “If a horse does crib, my advice is to not try to stop them, because thwarting this behavior (with cribbing collars, shock collars, etc.) may be cruel,” said Munsterman. “We need to learn more about cribbing because it may be better for the horse to be able to continue this stress-relieving activity and (for us to) just fgure out a way for him to do it safely.”

One way to distract the horse from cribbing and give him an alternative way to express oral behavior is to provide toys. “Tere are some gigantic plastic treat balls they can kick around,” said Munsterman. “Tese look like giant spools, and you can put horse treats inside. Te horse rolls it around with his nose, and every now and then it drops out a treat if the horse rolls it the right way. Tere are new ones now too that allow you to fll them with hay and have lots of holes for the horse to try to pull hay through to eat.” Tis gives the horse something to do that is inter-

“Cribbers seem to be more prone to colic than the average horse,” said Munsterman. “So the question is this: Are (cribbers) more prone to colic because they have other GI issues going on and they crib in an attempt to resolve that discomfort, or does the cribbing cause the GI tract issues. “In one study we looked at pressure in the abdomen, and it changes when they crib. Cribbers have higher pressure when they crib, which is not good. We were not able to actually link this with specifc diseases that it might cause, but there might be a correlation.
