BIGGER CAL-BRED OPPORTUNITIES AT DEL MAR

RON MESAROS

W

ith the Del Mar meet beginning this month, we are pleased that all Golden State Series stakes races will be carded as in the past and also purses in certain stakes have increased signifcantly over last year. In particular, the purses in the straight 3-year-old, and 3 & up races will be $150,000-$175,000 each. It is the goal of CTBA to continue to preserve and add as many black-type opportunities for owners and breeders as possible. As in the past, each of the Golden State stakes, however, will have a purse of at least $100,000. Once again we would like to thank and acknowledge Del Mar Toroughbred Club and the Toroughbred Owners of California for their support of all California-bred races. As Cal-breds continue to make up more than half of the felds both north and south, the emphasis on providing these restricted opportunities help reward those investing in breeding and racing in the state. Without the Cal-bred inventory, racing would be in big trouble. Please see below for a list of the stakes, dates, and conditions ofered at Del Mar.

Denise Martin, who with her husband, Perry, was an integral part of the California Chrome team, died June 14 at age 61. In addition to being an active Thoroughbred owner, Martin was an accomplished chemist, business leader, and mother of two. Perry Martin bred superstar California-bred California Chrome in partnership with Steve Coburn. Perry and his wife founded Martin Racing in 2016, and Denise managed all communications and behindthe-scenes business needs for the small, family-owned organization. California Chrome became a fan favorite when he won the 2014 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1). He is the all-time leading Cal-bred earner, with $14,752,650, and he earned two Eclipse Award titles as North America’s Horse of the Year as well as two Cal-bred Horse of the Year titles. California Chrome also won the 2016 Dubai World Cup (G1) and eight additional graded stakes races. California Chrome’s success enabled Martin Racing to expand internationally. The Martins supported their frst homebred via stallion syndicate participation, originally in Kentucky and now in Japan. They also stand Thoroughbred stallions in California, Louisiana, and Wyoming and the Hambletonian-winning Standardbred sire Trixton in Canada.

Denise Martin

Memoriam

“Denise greatly enjoyed interacting with racing fans, whether she communicated with them in person or through California Chrome’s offcial social media channels,” said Perry. “She also was solely responsible for all of Martin Racing’s charitable giving endeavors.” A trained chemist and California State University graduate, Denise was CEO of Martin Testing Labs in Sacramento from its creation in 2000 to its sale in June 2020. She previously worked for the United States Air Force as a civilian employee at McClellan Air Force Base. In semi-retirement, the Chicago native served her adopted Wyoming community on the North Alpine Water District Board of Directors. In addition to her husband of 35 years, Martin is survived by daughter Kelly, son Perry Jr., and brothers Andrew Brudniak and Richard Brudniak.

Old Topper The California breeding industry lost one of its senior leading sires June 8 when Old Topper had to be euthanized due to arthritic issues related to old age. The multiple graded stakes-winning stallion stood his entire stud career at Tom and Debi Stull’s Tommy Town Thoroughbreds in Santa Ynez and had been pensioned in 2019. He was 26. Noble Threewitt trained Old Topper, a son of Gilded Time—Shy Trick, by Phone Trick. Frances Jelks bred the colt in Kentucky, and Barbara Hunter raced him. Old Topper competed from 2 to 5, earning $655,861. He won such stakes as the 1997 Best Pal Stakes (G3) and 1998 Pat O’Brien Handicap (G3), and his stakes-placings include the 1997 Del Mar Fu-

turity (G2), 1998 Affrmed Handicap (G3), and 2000 Potrero Grande Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2). Old Topper was one of the frst stallions the Stulls stood at Tommy Town after they acquired the farm. He quickly became a success as California’s leading freshman sire of 2004 and was among the top 10 freshman sires of North America by number of stakes horses that year. He went on to be California’s leading second-crop sire the next year and the leading third-crop sire in 2006. “He was a big horse for us that brought in a lot of mares,” Mike Allen, Tommy Town’s farm manager, told BloodHorse. “The runners he sired were sound and lasted a long time, and they tried hard every time.” Old Topper sired 27 stakes winners and another 34 stakes-placed performers. Queen Bee to You and Top Kisser were both grade 3 winners and won multiple stakes. Top Kisser was voted champion California-bred older female of 2014. The stallion’s multiple stakes winner Sierra Sweetie was voted champion Cal-bred 2-yearold female of 2005. Old Topper’s leading earner was four-time stakes winner Ain’t No Other, who earned $715,280. Old Topper’s fnal runners include undefeated 3-year-old flly Becca Taylor, a Nick Alexander homebred who won the April 3 Evening Jewel Stakes at Santa Anita.

A Storied Career Te Foundation’s keenest mission is fostering health of the horse and helping support the future veterinarians who will oversee their well-being. Tese students go through intense, lengthy, and expensive training that requires drive and commitment. We award scholarships and fellowships at the University of California, College of Veterinary Medicine, Davis, and Western University of Health Sciences, Veterinary Medicine in Pomona. Our trustees work with Gregory Ferraro DVM and trustee Jef Blea DVM to meet, interview, and select scholarship recipients. Te candidates leave us inspired, hopeful, and flled with admiration for these extraordinary young people who look forward to a career of service to horses. Dr. Carrie Fino, to whom we awarded the Louis R. Rowan Fellowship at UC Davis in 2009, joined the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine faculty in 2014. In 2017 she became the Gregory L. Ferraro Endowed Director of the Dr. Carrie Fino UC Davis Center for Equine Health. Dr. Fino’s background and training include completing her DVM and an internship in large animal medicine and surgery at the University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, and a residency in large animal internal medicine at UC Davis. Board certifed in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, she completed a PhD in comparative pathology at UC Davis and post-doctoral training in comparative genomics at the University of Minnesota. Del Mar Summer Meeting

Welcome Back OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND WHERE THE TURF MEETS THE SURF

D

But with vaccinations in California doing well and the state reopened, Del Mar is set for a hugely popular summer meet, which begins July 16 and runs through Sept. 6. Trevor Denman will return as Del Mar’s longtime announcer, after taking a break during the pandemic. Stakes purses have increased over last year’s COVID-restricted levels, and California-breds have a full complement of rich stakes opportunities. “Tis is one of the strongest stakes schedules in Del Mar’s history,” said David Jerkens, a Del Mar vice president and the racing secretary. “We have increased purses virtually across the board, and it will be exciting to see the level of quality we attract, especially as we are the home to the Breeders’ Cup this year.” Del Mar hosted the Breeders’ Cup for the frst time in 2017. It was such a rousing success that Breeders’ Cup is returning to the track for 2021. Te rich series will be held Nov. 5-6 at the beginning of the track’s fall meeting. Cal-breds, of course, make up a large part of the felds at Del Mar, and California owners and breeders are looking forward to being able to bring friends and relatives with them this summer. Several of the Golden State stakes will have increased purses. (For details, see page 3.) Tanks to a partnership arrangement

el Mar will be welcoming fans back to the facility this summer after a year without them due to the pandemic. For a racetrack that revels in boisterous fans packing the grandstand, 2020 was eerily quiet.

with the Toroughbred Owners of California, FanDuel Group’s TVG, and Te Stronach Group’s 1/ST Racing, Del Mar will be part of a purse enhancement program that is expected to inject up to $15 million into California Toroughbred purses and programs over the next two years. Further, Del Mar’s successful wagering numbers at its 2020 meet, despite the pandemic restrictions, added to the infux of monies going toward the upcoming racing stand. Del Mar has announced a 30% increase to its average daily overnight purses. Also, there will be an overall raise of 33% in its stakes schedule. Del Mar management believes the track will ofer more than $700,000 a day in purses over the course of the summer. Additionally, its popular “Ship and Win” program will double its oferings to horses brought in from out of state. “We’ve got all optimistic signs at Del

Mar for our horsemen this year,” said Tom Robbins, executive vice president for racing. “We went through a rough stretch last year because of the virus and the restrictions it required. But we nonetheless managed to do unbelievably well despite it, and now—with help from our racing partners—we’re on track to have one of the most lucrative seasons in Del Mar history.” While the track has announced plans to open at 100% seating capacity, fans wishing to attend must obtain a seating package in advance of their arrival. Admission tickets and parking passes will be included in the package. Tickets can be found at www.dmtc.com/tickets. “We are delighted to be able to welcome our fans back to Del Mar,” said Josh Rubinstein, president and COO of Del Mar. “We appreciate their patience as we have all adapted to the changing circumstances over the last 15 months.”

t’s a cool spring morning following several days of rain, and Soi Phet and Hogy look like twins as they stand at their paddock fence, a pair of bay geldings dappled with the fun remains of the mud in which they’ve recently rolled. Tey are on high alert as Michael Blowen, the proprietor of the Old Friends Toroughbred Retirement Farm, tools up in a golf cart and proceeds to grab a handful of carrots out of a sack. Te two grizzled racetrack veterans are soon munching contentedly, a pair of relaxed retirees letting go of the stress of their professional careers.

Soi Phet, who raced through eight seasons and ran as an 11-year-old, certainly earned his way to these cushy environs for his golden years, having run 64 times and earning better than a million dollars. He, along with champion Amazombie, are the two California-breds who currently reside at Old Friends, just north of Lexington, Ky., in the heart of Bluegrass country. But among the 126 horses at the facility are several others with close ties to California. Dual classic winner Silver Charm, the farm’s most famous resident, and three-time Santa Anita Handicap (G1) winner Game On Dude, both trained out of California by Bob Bafert, are here. Trainer David Hofmans is represented by Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Touch Gold and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) victor Alphabet Soup. Jerry Moss’ Ruhlmann spent his retirement here. California horsemen have in no small part made Old Friends what it is today—a must-see attraction for tourists looking for a great equine experience in the horse capi-

tal of the United States. Here, horses can get away from the confnes of racetrack life. Some have not been able to run around a paddock since they were yearlings. Tey can also daily greet their fans and bathe in attention while enjoying treats. Blowen, along with his wife, Diane, both writers for the Boston Globe, left the newspaper world to start a retirement haven for racehorses in the wake of Ferdinand’s death in Japan, which led to the current aftercare movement gaining traction in the U.S. Teir equine boarders are quite grateful.

Amazombie at age 15, still looks good enough to sprint six furlongs in stakes company. He shares an Old Friends’ paddock with another 15-year-old, Rapid Redux, who won 22 races in a row in the Mid-Atlantic region. However, when they race around their paddock, it is no contest. After all, Amazombie was named champion sprinter in North America in 2011, when he won the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), Ancient Title Stakes (G1), and Potrero Grande Stakes (G2). He returned the following season to take the Bing Cros-

Powell determined to fnd Soi Phet, who acquired a legion of “Phet Phans” during his popular race career, a retirement home with plenty of grass that he could enjoy. “I received a call from Leonard Powell, and I got so excited because I loved watching the horse run,” said Blowen. “He’s such a cool, nice, gentle horse that I think it was hard for Leonard to part with him. He wanted to be around the horse all the time. In the fnal analysis he did what was best for the horse and sent him where his fans could come see him and where he can run around. “Leonard sent us a whole list of what the horse likes. ‘Give him this, give that, sometimes you may need a little this. . .’ It was unbelievably detailed.” “It was an easy decision because Old Friends has a great reputation and he was already 11 years old, so I wasn’t going to keep him going,” said Powell. “He had a great campaign at 10 that we tried to replicate, but he had lost a step. He is the oldest stakes winner in Santa Anita history. First time a 10-year-old won a stakes. John Henry and Kona Gold did it at 9. He is such a classy horse.” Soi Phet and Hogy arrived at Old Friends within months of one another, and their careers are almost mirror imag-

He is a nine-time stakes winner who took a trio of grade 3 events: the 2013 Hanshin Cup Stakes at Arlington Park, the 2017 Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint Stakes, and the 2018 Canadian Turf Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Te Ofee Wild gelding was claimed in 2017 for $80,000 by Michael Hui, who raced him into the gelding’s 10-year-old season before retiring him to Old Friends.

If everyone were as generous and as careful with their horses as the people in California, I’d never have to ask anybody for anything. Tey appreciate what these horses have done for them and how they’ve changed their lives.” — Michael Blowen

“I thought it would be so cool if they got along, because of their parallel careers,” Blowen said. “Hogy is the East Coast version of Soi Phet. And they look similar to one another. Sure enough, we put them together and now they eat together, drink together, and run together. It’s like me and my shadow.” Some horses make the adjustment from racetrack to retirement faster than others.

Blowen pointed out that Arson Squad, after calling California home, arrived to fnd snow on the ground at Old Friends and was “a little skeptical.” Rail Trip, on the other hand, “took 20 seconds. ‘Tere’s the grass, there’s the run-in shed, there’s the bald guy (Blowen) who’s going to give me carrots.’ No muss, no fuss. Let’s go.” Blowen expressed great gratitude for the California horsemen who have helped get Old Friends up and going and have helped sustain its growth and ability to care for an ever-increasing number of horses. He cited Moss sending Ruhlmann, whom Blowen called “one of our frst important horses.” Frankel left a large sum to the farm. Dottie Ingordo, Madeline Auerbach, and Peter Miller (who sent champion and two-time Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, G1T, winner Stormy Liberal to Old Friends) have been supporters. Blowen relates that on a “miserable winter morning,” he looked out the window of his home “and there was Bob Baffert talking to Silver Charm. I thought I was hallucinating. He and (wife) Jill come all the time. “If everyone were as generous and as careful with their horses as the people in California, I’d never have to ask anybody for anything. Tey appreciate what these horses have done for them and how they’ve changed their lives.” As they run their paddocks, eat carrots, and bask in the admiration of fans, Soi Phet and Amazombie, too, after having given so much to their connections, have had their lives changed for the better with their retirement to this horse haven.

JIMMY BLUE JEANS SHIPPER SETS SAIL IN SNOW CHIEF AT SANTA ANITA BY EMILY SHIELDS

Bred by Perry Bruno and John Gezon, and now campaigned by that pair and partner Robert Jones, Jimmy Blue Jeans always showed talent. He did not debut until January of this year, when he fnished ffth while sprinting on Golden Gate’s synthetic track. Going two turns for the frst time, Jimmy Blue Jeans won Feb. 5 for his breeders and trainer Andy Mathis. He was third in allowance optional claiming company before his poor run in the $77,250 Silky Sullivan Stakes. Te winner that day? None Above the Law. Switched to the turf for the frst time, Jimmy Blue Jeans responded by winning an allowance optional claiming race by 13⁄4 lengths. Tat efort was enough to send him to the Snow Chief Stakes, a nine-furlong contest on the grass, but his inconsistency left him as the sixth choice in a feld of nine. Under jockey Kent Desormeaux, Jimmy Blue Jeans sat just behind pacesetter Found My Ball before swooping to the lead. None Above the Law, the even-money favorite, rallied hard from seventh position but ended up short by a neck, with Ferrariano a nose back in third. Jimmy Blue Jeans, a gray gelding,

California-bred My Fiona, by Ghostzapper—A Vision in Gray, by Two Punch, was a multiple stakes winner who earned $478,743. Now her frst foal, Fi Fi Pharoah, has carried on the tradition by winning the $151,000 Melair Stakes at Santa Anita June 19. My Fiona won six times, including the $100,500 California Toroughbred Breeders’ Association Stakes at Del Mar, $200,000 Golden State Juvenile Fillies Stakes at Santa Anita, and $200,250 So-

viet Problem Stakes at Los Alamitos, all in 2014. Her exploits earned her the title as California’s champion 2-year-old female. Sent to the breeding shed in 2017, My Fiona visited 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, making Fi Fi Pharoah a very rare Cal-bred by that sire. Fi Fi Pharoah was so highly regarded as a youngster that trainer Walther Solis entered her in the $152,000 Evening Jewel Stakes as a maiden, and Fi Fi Pharoah fnished second. Te chestnut sophomore flly means a lot to breeder and co-owner Terry Lovingier of Lovacres Ranch. He campaigned My Fiona with Tom Beckerle and Amanda Navarro and now races her daughter with them. “You can’t have a more special day,” Lovingier said after the race. “To breed them and then foal them out at the farm, to watch the birth, I mean she stood up in 15 minutes. ably about 165 pounds right away. I have video of her nuzzling me from the moment she stood up.” In the Melair, Fi Fi Pharoah raced last early under jockey Umberto Rispoli. Tey tracked the feld during the early stages of the 11⁄16-mile contest, with 21-1 shot Mucha Woman setting the pace. Fi Fi Pharoah was still last passing the half-mile marker, but she made a furious rally to draw even with leader Eddie’s New Dream at the head of the stretch. Te two fllies dueled to the wire until Fi FI Pharoah gained the advantage right before the line. She scored by a halflength, with Eddie’s New Dream second and I’m So Anna third. Te $90,000 winner’s share of the purse put Fi Fi Pharoah’s earnings at $178,560 with two wins, a second, and a third in fve starts. Having broken her maiden over the same course May 15, Fi Fi Pharoah has now won two in a row. Trainer Solis said of the Melair efort, “I didn’t think we would get beat this time. She just ran from the three-eighths; she knows when she has to speed up. She’s a classy flly.” My Fiona has had a big month. Her second foal, Finneus, broke his maiden June 13. He is the frst of three consecutive Stay Tirsty ofspring for the mare. She has a yearling colt and a 2-month-old flly by that Lovacres Ranch sire. Te morning after the race, Lovingier was full of admiration for the mare and her flly. “My Fiona has been fantastic,” he said. “She’s a really, really good broodmare, and she’s good to handle at the farm. I wouldn’t mind taking her back to American Pharoah, but judging by the babies coming up, she’s absolutely married to Stay Tirsty. Te flly she just had is phenomenal, and it’s a stone-cold cross.”

Golden State Series—Tor’s Echo Stakes

f Brickyard Ride had to encounter poor racing luck, he chose wisely. Following two stakes wins and a stakes-placing this year, he competed in allowance company and lost all chance with a lousy start. Te California-bred colt more than made up for that by adding another stakes victory, in the $100,500 Tor’s Echo Stakes at Santa Anita June 12.

“I don’t like to make excuses for my horses,” said trainer Craig Lewis. “But he was pretty much eliminated last time. He

hit the gate and then he ducked in real bad. He just lost his best attribute, which is speed.” Lewis knows his horse. Brickyard Ride is one of the fastest sprinters California has produced in recent years. He proved it yet again in the six-furlong Tor’s Echo, named for the California-bred Eclipse Award-winning sprinter of 2006. Six entered the Tor’s Echo, and Brickyard Ride, the 8-5 favorite, had to face other talented sprinters. Fashionably Fast had been voted co-champion Cal-bred sprinter of 2020. Colt Fiction had won that allowance race Brickyard Ride lost, and Loud Mouth had fnished second in it. Jamming Eddy and Whooping Jay are stakes-placed sons of now-pensioned Square Eddie. Juan Hernandez rode Brickyard Ride for the frst time in a race for the Tor’s Echo, though he had worked the colt in a

bullet :58 for fve furlongs June 4. “When I worked him, he just took of,” said Hernandez. “When the pony let me go, he just took of, and I didn’t know if I could hold him.” Lewis told Hernandez that Brickyard Ride would be fne in the race and instructed the jockey to be sure they got away from the gate cleanly. Hernandez followed instructions, and Brickyard Ride broke perfectly, fastest of the feld. “I never bothered him—he felt comfortable the whole way,” said Hernandez. Brickyard Ride was indeed comfortable and dictated the entire race. He sped along with a frst quarter-mile in :22.62 and a half-mile in :45.16. But he had plenty left for the stretch run, when he pulled away from the feld easily. At the wire Brickyard Ride stopped the timer in 1:09.34, defeating Colt Fiction by 43⁄4 lengths. Fashionably Fast fnished third. “I just felt like he trained well, and we know he’s a brilliant horse when he’s right,” said Lewis. “Juan knew he had a lot of horse under him.” Lewis trains Brickyard Ride for Alfred “Sonny” Pais, who bred and owns the 4-year-old son of Clubhouse Ride— Brickyard Helen, by Southern Image. Lewis trained Clubhouse Ride, a millionaire and now a top California sire. Pais and Lewis currently own the mare, who has two other winners and was bred back to Clubhouse Ride this year. Her 6-yearold, Big Barrel, a Cal-bred son of Surf Cat, has continued to win this year at Turf Paradise. Pais enjoyed another victory by his homebred star. “He goes fast easily,” said the owner. “But today there was nobody pushing him. It’s good to have Juan. He’s an experienced rider, and he makes good decisions.” Brickyard Ride raised his lifetime earnings to $464,477 and has a bright future. Lewis said he might point for the July 31 Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) at Del Mar.

“Acclimate has trained as good as he ever has,” said D’Amato. “I’m just going to see whether or not he still has that spark to be a graded stakes horse. He sure trains like it in the mornings.” Te old guy defnitely still has the spark, which he ably demonstrated in the $100,500 San Juan Capistrano Stakes (G3T). Acclimate already had one Capistrano trophy in his collection, from 2019, and he made it two for two at Santa Anita June 19. Acclimate likes to set the pace even though he excels in marathon turf events. Te Capistrano uses the entire Santa Anita turf course, starting at the top of the hill and touring the main turf course. Acclimate took the lead a few strides out of the gate, and he was able to dictate the pace with

Ricardo Gonzalez aboard. “Just get him in front—nice and comfortable is where he likes to be,” said Gonzalez about his tactics. No one bothered Acclimate on the lead through a half-mile in :48.19 and six furlongs in 1:11.56. Astronaut challenged briefy in the fnal turn, but Acclimate had plenty in reserve to repel that attempt and then draw away in the stretch. At the wire, he fnished 33⁄4 lengths ahead of Astronaut in 2:49.74. Red King, the 2020 Capistrano winner, fnished third. Te Johnston family of Old English Rancho had everything to do with Acclimate, from his conception to the present. Te family bred and raced his sire, Eclipse Award winner Acclamation, who stood at Old English before moving to John Harris’ Harris Farms in the joint venture between the two iconic California farms. Old English bred Acclimate with Sal and Patsy Berumen from their unraced homebred Boundary mare Knows No Bounds. Te Ellwood Johnston Trust owns Acclimate with Timmy Time Racing and Ken Tevelde. Te third generation of the Johnston family now operates Old English following the death of Ellwood W. (Buddy) Johnston in 2015. Buddy’s wife, Judy, who has also been an integral part of Old English, attended the Capistrano. “He still has it,” said Judy of Acclimate. “He took a little time of at the ranch. He liked his vacation, but he likes to run better.” D’Amato, the leading trainer at the Santa Anita meeting, said he was elated by Acclimate’s performance, especially since the Capistrano was the trainer’s favorite race while growing up. “Tis horse has been through the highs and the lows, and he’s bounced back,” said D’Amato. “He’s just an old warrior, and he gave it his all today. It’s just a beautiful thing to watch.” D’Amato also complimented Gonzalez’ ride. “Ricky did a masterful job of maintaining the distance and setting those comfortable fractions to have enough horse left,” the trainer said. “Ricky rode like a seasoned veteran at this distance.” Champion Cal-bred older male and turf horse of 2019, Acclimate also captured the 2019 Del Mar Handicap (G2T), a race D’Amato said he might target again this summer. Acclimate has placed in fve other stakes, and he has earned $557,872.

Afrmed Stakes

Cal-bred The Chosen Vron scores in Santa Anita’s Affrmed Stakes, his frst two-turn start

BIG HEART

THE CHOSEN VRON WINS THIRD STAKES IN THREE MONTHS BY TRACY GANTZ

S

ince April, California-bred Te Chosen Vron has been collecting stakes victories once a month. He made it three in a row in the $100,000 Afrmed Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita June 13.

Te Afrmed also ofered Te Chosen Vron the opportunity to demonstrate whether he could go two turns. He proved it in the gamest fashion, running down a horse with a seemingly impossible lead. Named for the 1978 Triple Crown winner based in California, the Afrmed is uniquely positioned on the calendar. Scheduled after all of the Triple Crown events, it gives later-developing 3-year30

olds a chance to shine. At 11⁄16 miles on the dirt, the stakes follows the 61⁄2 -furlong Lazaro Barrera Stakes (G3), named for Afrmed’s Hall of Fame trainer. And the Afrmed sits at the end of the Santa Anita meeting and before Del Mar begins, where many of the graded 3-year-old stakes are on the turf. Te Chosen Vron, of course, has even more options because as a Cal-bred he can also compete in Golden State Stakes races. Eric Kruljac, who trains Te Chosen Vron for himself and co-owners Robert Fetkin, John Sondereker, and Richard Tornburgh, is keeping that in mind. “It looks like we’ll run for $175,000 in the Real Good Deal going seven furlongs next time at Del Mar (July 30),” said Kruljac. “I decided to go here today to experiment with the distance because we have almost 40 days to the race at Del Mar.” Five lined up for the Afrmed. choice behind 7-5 Classier, a Bob Baffert-trained son of Empire Maker who cost $775,000 and broke his maiden by four lengths last fall. Classier stumbled slightly when the gate opened, and it was the “other Bafert” who posed the biggest threat. Defunded, the third choice, had fnished fourth in the Runhappy Santa Anita Derby (G1) for Bafert, and he battled with Jimmy Irish on the front end early in the Affrmed. Umberto Rispoli on Te Chosen Vron settled his mount into last. “When the gates crashed his intent was to go—obviously he’s coming from a six-furlong race,” said Rispoli. “But it’s so far he understood that when we didn’t go anywhere, he just switched of his mind and on the frst turn he was just completely relaxed.” Early on Te Chosen Vron raced about fve lengths behind fourth-place Mr. Impossible. Down the backstretch Te Chosen Vron began inching up on the rail, passing Mr. Impossible. Jimmy Irish tired on the second turn, and Rispoli angled out Te Chosen Vron to challenge the two Bafert trainees. Te Chosen Vron was able to catch and pass Classier fairly easily, but Defunded had an ominous four-length lead in the stretch. Te Chosen Vron responded to Rispoli’s urging to poke his head in front at the sixteenth pole, drawing away to score by 11⁄4 lengths in 1:44.01. Classier fnished third. “He’s a small horse, but he’s got a big heart,” said Rispoli. Te four owners bred Te Chosen Vron in the name of Tiz Molly partners. Tiz Molly, by Tiz Wonderful, is the dam of Te Chosen Vron, who is by Vronsky. Te Chosen Vron added the Afrmed to wins in the Barrera and Echo Eddie Stakes. He also fnished third in the San Vicente Stakes (G2), his only loss in fve starts.

fter a year’s interruption due to the pandemic, Fasig-Tipton conducted its second California 2-year-old sale at Santa Anita June 23. Te demand outstripped supply by a considerable amount.” Much of the catalog came from Florida and Louisiana consignors, and Browning said he had hoped for more Cal-breds in the catalog. “I think the California industry has to make a decision whether it wants to have a viable sales marketplace or not,” he said. “We had very little support from the signifcant California breeders this year. And ultimately the strength of any sale is based upon the quality of product that you’re able to attract.” Fasig-Tipton will return to conduct its yearling sale, which is scheduled for Sept. 28 in Pomona. “We’re going to try to have a great yearling sale in September,” said Browning. “We’re going to do everything that we can to put the best group of horses on the grounds at Fairplex in Pomona.”

ix horses based in California have won the Preakness Stakes (G1) since 2010. On May 15, Rombauer raised that number to seven when the son of Twirling Candy took the 2021 edition of the Preakness at Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore, Md. It was the frst Triple Crown race win for John and Diane Fradkin, who have been successfully breeding and racing in California for years. Rombauer has vaulted to the top of the list of horses campaigned by the couple, but before him came a parade of classy runners, many of them California-breds. John Fradkin was working one of his frst real jobs out of college as a small-time institutional bond salesman when he was introduced to racing. A co-worker, Robert Allen,

grew up near Santa Anita and knew how to handicap. “We were young guys keeping Wall Street hours while working on the West Coast,” said Fradkin, “which meant that by 2 p.m. we were looking for trouble. He said we should go to the races and that I might be good at it.” Fradkin did have vague memories of an earlier racing experience, going with family friends to Delaware Park as a kid. “It left an impression,” Fradkin recalled. He had no idea that one day he would be entrenched in all things racing. At frst, his new trips to Santa Anita led to entering handicapping contests in Las Vegas. “I fnished second in the ‘wimpy division’ four times in a row and made a few bucks,” he said. “It’s really the consistency division; you bet favorites and try to pick

winners, no matter the odds. Eventually, I thought that if I claimed a horse, I might learn the game from the inside and improve my handicapping skills.” Te Fradkins met with trainer Ron Ellis, who helped them drop in four claims. But they were outshook every time. Tey fnally claimed Kentucky-bred Ruf Hombre for $25,000 in their ffth attempt; the gelding fnished last of 11. “It was not good,” Fradkin said. “Ron said after the race that the horse had an ankle, and we weren’t sure if he would make it back. But two months later at Del Mar he won with Laffit Pincay Jr. aboard. I thought, ‘Gee, this is easy!’ Tat’s how the racing gods sucked me in, I suppose.” Diane was quick to point out the John was never in it alone. “Tis was something we embarked on together,” she said, noting that they got married on Breeders’ Cup day in 1993. “We don’t have children, so the horses are substitute kids, in a sense. We started doing this together and have grown it together. Now here we are.” Te Fradkins took the money they had made in the Del Mar race to the Keeneland September yearling sale that year. “We didn’t know what we were doing, but we hired a guy to be our bloodstock agent, Larry Richardson,” said John. Te former general manager of Nelson Bunker Hunt’s Bluegrass Farm, Richardson was “looking for something

at Del Mar. But the time was inexplicably slow and no ofers came. Te Michael McCarthy trainee fnished second in the American Pharoah Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita in September, proving he could excel on either surface. “We started turning down ofers then,” John said. Fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), Rombauer won the 2021 El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields by a neck. After the colt had run third in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2), the Fradkins had a choice regarding the Kentucky Derby (G1)—every owner’s dream—or heading straight for the Preakness. “It was us, not Michael, who decided that,” Diane explained. “We felt that if he was going to run the race of his life, we’d rather it be while winning than fnishing ffth, which is what we thought might happen in Kentucky. We ran against tired horses in the Preakness, but we were tickled with his efort. John always said we could breed a better horse than we could buy, and that has been proven true time and time again with this female family.” Te Fradkins typically have two broodmares in their band, and they have only bred around 40 foals in their entire career. “We’ve got just one mare in Kentucky and that’s Cashmere,” said John. “She appears to be another magic mare, like Ultrafeet.” Rombauer fnished third in the June 5 Belmont Stakes (G1), pushing his earnings past $1 million. Teir only other horse currently on the track is Cono, a stakes-placed, Kentucky-bred son of the late California stallion Lucky Pulpit. In addition to Cashmere, the Fradkins own California broodmare Letthepartybegin, a daughter of Bertrando. She is boarded at Old English Rancho and has thrown two winners from three starters. to do,” according to John, “and took us around the sale when we were nobodies. He showed us conformation on diferent horses and showed us an example of a little flly where the bones lined up well on the front end. We ended up buying her; that was Ultrafeet.” “I remember going to Keeneland and walking around the sale for the frst time to fnd Ultrafeet,” Diane said. “We thought it would be fun to bid and went to $10,500.” Te daughter of Afeet never even hit the board for the Fradkins, and they were stoutly advised not to try to make the diminutive flly a broodmare. But previously they had a good experience with Keith Card and his Hi Card Ranch, so they sent Ultrafeet there and “were treated like family,” according to John. “Ultrafeet started producing some nice-looking foals that sold well as 2-year-olds,” he added. In 2002, along came Cambiocorsa. Te California-bred daughter of Avenue of Flags—Ultrafeet went for $90,000 at the Barretts May 2-year-old sale in 2004, then went on to win nine of 18 starts and earn $522,055. Cambiocorsa was a star down the hill at Santa Anita, and among her victories were two grade 3 wins over that course. Cambiocorsa has since gone on to be a powerhouse broodmare for Ran Jan Racing, with grade 2 winners Schiaparelli and Moulin de Mougin, as well as stakes winner Alexis Tangier and stakesplaced Vionnet to her credit. Vionnet went on to produce Cartier Horse of the Year Roaring Lion. Fradkin repaid Keith Card’s kindness by allowing him to breed a full brother to Cambiocorsa in 2004. Tat colt, California Flag, went on to win the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint and earned $1,288,825. Card died midway through California Flag’s career, but the gelding continued running for his wife, Barbara; the Fradkins; and other partners. California Flag tied with Dancing

in Silks for the 2009 Cal-bred Horse of the Year. Te Fradkins’ success with Ultrafeet didn’t stop there. She produced the Cowboy Cal mare Cashmere in 2011, and Cashmere, in turn, foaled Preakness winner Rombauer. “It was the pandemic that caused us to own him,” John said. “Te OBS (Ocala Breeders’ Sales) April sale was delayed last year, and we had no confdence that the sale would actually happen. Eddie Woods recommended we run him, win early, and then sell him at the track.” Rombauer did win early, breaking his maiden on the turf in July 2020

BATTLING BOTS

Adult botfies lay their eggs on the areas where the host horse is most likely able to lick, thus hatching the eggs and starting the botfy larvae on their cyclical journey

MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES TO HAMPER THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE BOTFLY

M

BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS

ost internal parasites of horses are worms, but bots are the larvae (maggots) of a fy that uses a horse to complete its life cycle. Te larvae spend most of their life fastened to the inside of the host animal’s stomach, spending the winter robbing nutrients from the blood of the host horse’s stomach lining and causing irritation to that lining. Bot larvae occasionally perforate the stomach wall, which might lead to fatal complications. If a horse has only a few bots in its stomach, those bots might not cause serious problems. But in large numbers they can create a lot of damage, and sometimes cause colic. Te adult bot fies are a serious

In northern climates the botfy season might be short, with fies hatching in late August and into September—until the frst hard frosts. In the southern U.S. the adult fies might keep appearing year round. Erika Machtinger, PhD, an assistant professor of veterinary entomology at Pennsylvania State University, says actually several diferent kinds of botfies parasitize other animals besides horses. “Tere are human bots, and some that live in squirrels and other mammals,” she said. Tese fies apparently produce an unpleasant sensation and startle the horses when hovering and laying eggs because horses try to get away from them. “Te female fy seeks horses to lay her eggs, and some species can lay up to 1,000 eggs—usually on several diferent horses,” said Machtinger. “In a group of horses the fy will go from horse to horse and attach her eggs. Te eggs may be laid in diferent areas of the horse’s body, depending on the species of botfy. the eggs on legs and fanks. Once attached to the hair, eggs incubate for four to six days before hatching and need no external stimulation. Tese larvae simply migrate along the jaw, crawl into the mouth, and burrow into the gum tissue. After about a month, they follow the same cycle as G. intestinalis. Tey emerge from the gums, pass down into the stomach, and fnd a place to attach and grow. G. haemorrhoidalis is a species that lays black eggs on the hairs near the horse’s lips. Tese eggs hatch by themselves in two to four days, then penetrate the inner lip in front of the incisors. Ten they follow the same path as their relatives, after fve to six weeks in the mouth. Bot larvae cause stomach infammation at the site of attachment. A heavy load of bots could cause indigestion, mild colic, unthriftiness, and lack of appetite. Large numbers in the gums can create pus pockets and irritation in the horse’s mouth. CONTROL OF BOTS

Te frst line of defense and least invasive strategy is simply to remove the bot eggs from the horse’s hair coat, and does not involve use of chemicals. You can use clippers or specially designed tools that scrape of the eggs. You can also pluck eggs of with your fngers. Yellow eggs on the hair coat are easy to see, especially on a dark-colored horse. Te main thing is to keep track of those eggs or clipped-of hairs and destroy them or have the horse in an area where if they drop onto the ground they will never get into a horse’s feed or be consumed with grass. Removing the eggs is a very efective way to control bots if you are handling the horses every day. Eggs should be removed as soon as they are observed. Eggs on legs, shoulders, and fanks are easily seen and picked of with your fngers, trimmed of with scissors or a safety razor, or scraped of with sandpaper. Washing will not remove them. Eggs under the jaw are harder to see and remove because they are deep in the hair. Smearing petroleum jelly along the bottom of the jaw tends to kill those eggs by sealing of their air supply and sufocating the developing larvae. When a botfy is bothering the horses 42

you can sometimes just grab it. “Tey are slow fiers, compared with most fies,” said Machtinger. “I am not a veterinarian—I am a veterinary entomologist. But most veterinarians recommend chemical control in the form of a dewormer. Tough these larvae are not worms, they can be killed by a deworming drug when they are inside the horse.”

Horse health...may best be protected by dosing the whole herd with ivermectin or moxidectin after the frst hard frost, which ends egg laying but before the little bots have worked their way...to the stomach and reached damaging sizes.” — Dr. Roger Moon, entomologist

Some dewormers such as ivermectin can kill frst-stage larvae while they are still in the mouth tissues, before they migrate down into the GI tract. But you defnitely want to kill these parasites before they settle in for the winter in the horse’s stomach. “Te usual recommendation is to treat

twice a year,” said Machtinger, “once after the frst killing frosts (when there will be no more adult fies laying eggs on the horse and you are killing any bots that have gotten into the horse) and once in the spring.” A deworming in the spring will kill anything that might have gotten missed before they pass out in the manure to start the cycle all over again. “Te dewormings targeting bots can usually be scheduled at the same time you’d be doing treatments for the other internal parasites—nematodes (worms) that commonly live in the GI tract,” said Machtinger. “Te treatment for bots is pretty easy and straightforward and mainly depends on what part of the country you are in.” Ivermectin paralyzes bots wherever they are in the body, not just in the stomach. Unable to move, they cannot eat and soon die. Te usual recommendation for treatment, especially if you are unable to pick the eggs of the hairs as they are laid, is to treat with ivermectin about one month after the frst eggs are laid, and at twomonth intervals throughout the fy season. In northern climates with a short season, bots can be efectively controlled with just one treatment after killing frosts in the fall. The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through June 27, 2021.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
