CTBA Stakes a Claim for State Owners & Breeders

T

he CTBA has worked diligently the past several decades to provide ample stakes opportunities to California owners and breeders. Te growth and protection of black-type races remain of utmost importance to incentivize and reward those breeding in the state as the value of the stakes performer, their sire/dam and entire family are positively afected. While we oversee the registration and allocation of races for the lucrative Golden State Series program ofered statewide,

we also encourage the ofering of as many listed and overnight stakes opportunities as possible through the purse account. With the support of the TOC, through legislation enacted in the mid-1990s, Calbreds are eligible for a 30% purse bonus in these open overnight stakes. Tis can add $15,000-$22,500 to the total purse available to a California-bred. Trough the frst 51∕2 months of the year (Jan. 1-May 15), there have already been a 20 stakes wins by California-breds. Fifteen of the victories came in Cal-bred restricted

stakes, three in graded stakes, and two in non-graded open stakes. While many black-type opportunities are on ofer throughout the state over the next six months (see list of Golden State races on page 35), we would like to recognize below the horses and connections of the stakes winners thus far in 2021. For the most part, the Golden State stakes races have been popular and have flled well. Let’s hope this trend continues through the summer and fall. Best of luck to all!

Californian Wins Ryan Award California turf writer Mark Shrager won the 2020 Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award for his book Diane Crump, A Horse-Racing Pioneer’s Life in the Saddle. Te award, which was presented by Castleton Lyons, was announced May 10 via Zoom conference. Crump was the frst woman to ride in a sanctioned North American pari-mutuel race, Feb. 7, 1969. She was also the frst woman to compete in the Kentucky Derby and frst to win a stakes. She blazed the trail during the late 1960s, and Shrager’s book chronicles that journey, which included Crump having to defy threats, jeers, and boycotts to become a professional jockey. “Te author chronicles Diane’s historic frsts,” noted judge Kay Coyte, “including her 1970 Kentucky Derby ride, with a wonderful chapter on her brother listening to the radio broadcast from Vietnam. Shrager also mines biographical gold in the all-but-unknown aspects of Diane’s life: her mother’s special ‘gift,’ her daughter’s unique perspective and service to others, particularly with therapy dogs, during her post-racing career. It’s a beautiful telling of a remarkable life.” Shrager, a Southern California native, caught the racing bug in his teens at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, and Del Mar. Te UCLA graduate went on to a long career in education fnance with the Los Angeles Unifed School District. For nearly 50 years Shrager has written freelance for various trade publications, including Turf and Sport Digest and American Turf Monthly. He was previously a Ryan fnalist for Te Great Sweepstakes of 1877.

Len Ragozin Len Ragozin, who created The Ragozin Sheets, died May 13 in White River Junction, Vt. He was 92. The Sheets today still provide Thoroughbred performance records, with many owners, trainers, and handicappers using them. Ragozin explained his work in the pre-computer era of working out the algorithms that became The Ragozin Sheets and his handicapping techniques in the book The Odds Must Be Crazy. Ultimately, Ragozin sold the now-computerized company that produces The Sheets. He donated most of the proceeds to fund the Len Ragozin Foundation, which provides support to groups and individuals working on innovative ways to put progressive ideas into practice. Vronsky California sire Vronsky died of an apparent heart attack April 29 at Harris Farms after successfully covering a mare, according to Jonny Hilvers, general manager at Harris Farms. “For being a 22-year-old, he looked amazing and could not have been doing any better,” said Hilvers. “He has been such a nice horse to be around all these years, and he will be sorely missed.” From 13 crops to race, Vronsky is the sire of 151 winners and progeny earnings of $15.9 million. His 15 stakes winners include grade 1 winner What a View, grade 2 winner Norvsky, and grade 3 victor Poshsky. His son The Chosen Vron won this year’s Lazaro Barrera Stakes (G3) and Echo Eddie Stakes. Arthur B. Hancock III and Stonerside bred Vronsky, a son of Danzig—Words of War, by Lord At War. Sold for $1 million at the 2000 Keeneland September yearling sale, Vronsky was a three-time winner of $135,247 while racing for owner Steve Taub. Vronsky entered stud in 2005 at E.W. “Buddy” Johnston’s Old English Rancho in Sanger, Calif.

Heaven Shines wins a Golden Gate maiden to become frst winner from frst crop of freshman sire Stanford Long Branch Stakes at Monmouth as a 3-year-old, the Charles Town Classic Stakes (G2) and Harlan’s Holiday Stakes (G3) as a 4-year-old, and the Challenger Stakes as a 5-year-old. Stanford’s career earnings total $1,385,510.

CALIFORNIA PREAKNESS CONNECTION When Rombauer won the May 15 Preakness Stakes (G1), he spotlighted California as an excellent location from which to prep for Triple Crown events. But the Kentucky-bred’s pedigree also has deep California roots. Michael McCarthy prepared Rombauer for the Preakness almost completely in California. The John and Diane Fradkin homebred began his career at Del Mar, started once at Santa Anita, and won the 2021 El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields. Several of the colt’s relatives have also done their racing in California, including 2009 California-bred Horse of the Year California Flag. Rombauer is by Twirling Candy out of the Cowboy Cal mare Cashmere. The second dam is Ultrafeet, whose line has produced a host of stakes winners, many through her daughter Cambiocorsa. The Fradkins bred Cambiocorsa in California by crossing Ultrafeet with California sire Avenue of Flags. Cambiocorsa turned into a hillside turf course specialist at Santa Anita. Doug O’Neill trained Cambiocorsa frst for Leatherman Racing and later for Leatherman and Ran Jan Racing Inc. In 2006 Cambiocorsa won fve stakes, most of them about 61⁄2 furlongs down the hill, including the Las Cienegas Handicap (G3T) and Senator Ken Maddy Handicap (G3T). Cambiocorsa has gone on to be an excellent broodmare, producing the likes of graded winners Moulin

SKIP DICKSTEIN/TIM LANAHAN

IN

Drawing from his California heritage, Rombauer takes the 146 Preakness Stakes de Mougin and Schiaparelli, as well as stakes winners Bronson and Alexis Tangier. Ultrafeet also foaled California Flag, a full brother to Cambiocorsa. Keith and Barbara Card’s Hi Card Ranch bred California Flag, who raced frst for Hi Card and, after Keith Card’s death in 2011, for Barbara Card, John Fradkin, E-Racing. com, and Kevin Jacobsen. California Flag earned $1,288,825 and won the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, also down the hill. Like his sister, he racked up several graded wins on the unique Santa Anita course, including three editions of the Morvich (G3T), twice as a handicap and once as a stakes. In addition to being named Horse of the Year along with Dancing in Silks, California Flag was voted the 2009 champion Cal-bred turf horse.

10 YEARS AGO En route to being named the 2011 Eclipse Award-winning champion older male, California-bred ACCLAMATION captured the $250,000 Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap (G1T) at Hollywood Park June 11. With Joe Talamo aboard, Acclamation led throughout the 11⁄4-mile turf event to score by 31⁄2 lengths in 2:00.18 as the 7-10 favorite. Don Warren trained the 5-year-old son of Unusual Heat—Winning in Style, by Silveyville for E. W. (Buddy) and Judy Johnston

and their daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Peter Hilvers. The Johnston family’s Old English Rancho bred Acclamation, who would never lose again in fve subsequent starts, including that year’s TVG Pacifc Classic Stakes (G1) and the Whittingham again in 2012. Acclamation now stands at John Harris’ Harris Farms in Coalinga.

25 YEARS AGO California-bred LETTHEBIGHOSSROLL won the frst of three consecutive 1996 stakes in the $189,100 Triple Bend Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G3) June 30 at Hollywood Park. Owned by Mike Pegram, trained by Bob Baffert, and ridden by Chris McCarron, Letthebighossroll hit the wire three-quarters of a length in front of Score Quick in the seven-furlong event. He added the Answer Do Stakes a month later at Hollywood and the Crazy Kid Handicap at Del Mar in September and was named that season’s champion Cal-bred sprinter. Cardiff Stud Farm bred the 8-year-old son of Flying Paster—Moonlight Jig, by Jig Time.

Letthebighossroll concluded his racing career the following season with a record of 18 wins in 60 starts for total earnings of $1,014,377.

50 YEARS AGO CLASS A sported not only an all-California pedigree, but also an all-Old English Rancho one. He was by Old English’s good California-bred Real Good Deal, who still has a stakes named for him at Del Mar, and out of Social Rating, a daughter of Fleet Nasrullah, an Old English stallion for many years. Class A won the $20,000 Pacifca Stakes at the Tanforan meeting at Golden Gate Fields June 12, 1971. Merlin Volzke rode Class A for trainer Earl Bryant. Ellwood B. and Betty Johnston of Old English raced the 3-year-old colt, who went off as a 25-1 longshot and completed the one mile in 1:36 after leading throughout. Old English was winning its second consecutive Pacifca with a homebred, following Fleet Sands the year before.

ANNE M. EBERHARDT

Having begun his career as an apprentice in Maryland (where he won 547 races in 1974), McCarron spent the balance of his professional years based in Southern California, part of an erstwhile jockey colony that included other standouts such as Laft Pincay Jr., Gary Stevens, Eddie Delahoussaye, and Patrick Valenzuela. As such, McCarron had ample occasion to ride top California-breds, and made the most of such Chris McCarron reminisces opportunities. For at least part of their racing lives, Cal-bred Horses of the Year Silveyville, Soviet Problem, Jaklin Klugman, Bertrando, Cavonnier, King Glorious, Best Pal, Free House, Flying Paster, and Tiznow were steered to victory by McCarron. He partnered with

iven his Hall of Fame riding career and the nearly 30 years he spent professionally in the saddle, Chris McCarron naturally sat aboard a bevy of superstar racehorses. Te immortal John Henry, along with the dual-classic winner Alysheba, tops the list. Among the jockey’s 7,141 victories and 993 stakes wins are two Kentucky Derbys and fve Breeders’ Cup Classics. But McCarron also made a name for himself riding horses bred in California.

an additional 12 Cal-bred champions for part or all of their careers. Te 1980s and 1990s were a time when Cal-breds regularly stared down the best from the rest of the country and the world and excelled in open company. McCarron, who became an executive at Santa Anita Park following his 2002 retirement and who today lives in Kentucky, readily agreed to travel back in time and share memories of some of the Cal-breds he rode so successfully across his years as their pilot. Although McCarron didn’t get the mount on Jaklin Klugman until after the Orbit Ruler colt, under Darrel McHargue, fnished third to the flly Genuine Risk in the 1980 Kentucky Derby (G1), he achieved success in a couple of felds because of the horse. McCarron was on his back when Jaklin Klugman, then under the care of trainer LeRoy Jolley, defeated Fappiano by a neck in the Jerome Handicap (G2). Te colt got his name because he was owned by actor Jack Klugman, who was at the time starring in the hit TV show “Quincy, M.E.” playing a Los Angeles medical examiner who aided the police department in investigations. Te show, which

ran from 1976-83, featured one episode that introduced a young actor named Chris McCarron. Stretching his talents in his new career, McCarron played a—wait for it—jockey named Tommy Canfeld. “We shot the scenes at Fairplex at Pomona, and that was a lot of fun,” said McCarron. “Te story centered around an insurance fraud scheme, with the owner/trainer drugging his horses for the insurance money. It wasn’t a very heartwarming plot. Dr. Quincy did the necropsy. Jack was a great guy.” And McCarron got to act before fellow jockey Gary Stevens, who appeared in the flm “Seabiscuit” and the TV show “Luck.” Unlike McCarron, who received no award nominations for his acting, Jaklin Klugman was a Cal-bred Horse of the Year who won 10 of 19 starts and earned $478,878. Another Cal-bred Horse of the Year McCarron rode later in the horse’s career was Flying Paster, whom McCarron calls “probably the best horse I rode who got the least amount of credit.” Tat lack of respect came from the fact that the Gummo colt was born in the wrong year—1976. Tat meant he had to compete on a steady basis against dual-classic winner Spectacular Bid.

Under jockey Don Pierce, Flying Paster fnished second to Spectacular Bid in the Malibu Stakes (G2), San Fernando Stakes (G2), Strub Stakes (G1), and Santa Anita Handicap (G1). McCarron got the mount on Flying Paster later in the horse’s 4-year-old season, and guided him to wins at 5 in the San Pasqual Handicap (G2), San Carlos Handicap (G2), and San Antonio Stakes (G1) for owner/breeder B.J. Ridder and trainer Gordon Campbell. “He was a hard-trying, consistent horse who broke his maiden going fve-eighths and ran well up to a mile and a quarter,” said McCarron. “He was a solid performer who could do a lot of things.” Indeed, Flying Paster won 13 of 27 starts, including 12 stakes, and more than $1.1 million. Another Cal-bred millionaire and champion McCarron partnered with was Mike Pegram’s Letthebighossroll, a hard-knocking, 10-time stakes winner foaled in 1988. Although he didn’t ride too often for trainer Bob Bafert, McCarron perhaps got the mount on Letthebighossroll because the gelding was a son of Flying Paster. But McCarron most remembers this horse because of a hat, not a race. “He was a darn good sprinter,” said McCarron, “and one day I remember I won on him at Santa Anita, and one of Bob’s young sons was wearing one of those big ‘Cat in the Hat’ hats when we came back. So I asked him if I could wear his hat in the winner’s circle, and he gave it to me. So I had that big hat on in the photo.” A match race that wasn’t much of a match is the indelible memory McCarron has of Soviet Problem, a rocket ship of a flly trained by Greg Gilchrist. McCarron called the Moscow Ballet flly “probably the fastest flly I’d ever ridden. She rattled of race after race for Greg and owners John Harris and Don Valpredo. She was brilliant, and only got beat a neck by Cherokee Run in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) at Churchill Downs in 1994.” www.ctba.com ❙ June 2021 ❙ CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED

was a nice colt,” McCarron said. “So I got on a plane at 2 a.m. Dubai time after the World Cup, got into L.A. at about 12:30 Sunday afternoon, went to the track, got a nap in, and won the feature race on Echo of Yesterday. And it was only an allowance race. I don’t know what I was thinking, coming all the way back just to ride him.” McCarron had the privilege of riding the top two leading money-earning Cal-breds in history at the time, since surpassed by only California Chrome. Although Best Pal passed through several trainers and riders in his 47-race career—unusual for such a high-profle and talented runner—he wound up amassing $5,668,245 in earnings while winning a whopping 17 stakes races, including six grade 1 victories. Trained earlier by Ian Jory and Gary Jones, the son of Habitony eventually made his way to the Richard Mandella barn, which is when McCarron partnered with him. “He was a darn nice horse, incredibly consistent, and he lasted a long time,” said McCarron of the three-time Cal-bred Horse of the Year. “Te only thing he lacked in was when he was shipped out of town. He just didn’t bring his typical form with him.” In fact, Best Pal, who raced for John and Betty Mabee’s Golden Eagle Farm, won just once in 10 races outside California, that victory coming in the 1992 Oaklawn Handicap (G1). Tiznow, who became the all-time Cal-bred money-earner during his career in 2000-01, had no such problems playing out of town. McCarron grows reverent when discussing Tiznow, North America’s Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male of 2000 and champion older male a year later. Of course, he was voted Cal-bred Horse of the Year for those two seasons as well. Tiznow, who would go on to be among the leading sires in North America, earned $6,427,830 in his 15-race career, with eight victories. “He was an amazing racehorse,” McCarron said. “What he accomplished at 3 was mind-boggling, considering he didn’t break his maiden until May (May 31).” McCarron was a spectator early on as far as Tiznow was concerned. Alex Solis was aboard the Cee’s Tizzy colt when he broke his maiden, and subsequently had to choose between Tiznow and Dixie Union, choosing the latter. Victor Espinoza was next to pilot the Jay Robbins trainee, who raced for Cee’s Stable. McCarron rode Tiznow once for a workout but was committed elsewhere when the frst opportunity arose to ride him in a race. Espinoza rode Tiznow twice but stayed aboard Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) winner Early Pioneer for the Pacifc Classic (G1), opening up the mount for McCarron, who rode Tiznow to a second-place fnish behind Skimming. Victories in the Super Derby (G1) and Goodwood Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2) followed, and then it was on to the Breeders’ Cup Classic, in which Tiznow defeated Giant’s Causeway by a neck. At 4, Tiznow returned to win the San Fernando Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G2) and Big ‘Cap, then went to the sidelines with various ailments. After returning and running third in both the Woodward Stakes (G1) and Goodwood , McCarron remembered thinking, “Maybe he’s peaked. Maybe he’s done everything he can do.” Tiznow famously balked before putting in his fnal work be-

fore that year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, taking 40 minutes before he would work. “He was always a bit of a quirky horse,” said McCarron. “John Harris told me when they were breaking him, he dropped every rider who had ever been on his back. And he was a big, strong son of a gun. “I told Jay in the paddock before the Classic that I wasn’t going to use the stick unless it was absolutely necessary. He hated the stick. When Sakhee got by us a neck at the sixteenth pole, I thought at least we’d get second. I reached back and tapped him once left-handed, and he responded. It was amazing. I could feel his energy, fght, and determination. When he got to the wire frst, I almost broke down in tears.” Tat victory came in New York less than two months after the 9/11 attacks, and as Tiznow and McCarron were galloping out, the rider could hear track announcer Tom Durkin say, “Tiznow wins for America.” “I still get goosebumps to this day,” said the rider.

Gold Rush Weekend

L

ong overdue storms hit Golden Gate Fields April 25, drenching the fnal day of the annual Gold Rush Weekend—the biggest stakes bonanza of the year at the San Francisco Bay Area track.

With less than half of its normal rainfall this year, the parched region surely needed the precipitation. But the rain had its drawbacks, keeping all but the hardi22

est fans away from the recently reopened grandstand and washing six scheduled races of the slick turf. Golden Gate, with its reliably consistent Tapeta main track, kept its mostly large felds intact. Tere was only one scratch on the program due to the surface switch. Of the turf came a pair of one-mile black-type stakes events for 3-year-old California-bred and California-sired horses, the Campanile for fllies and the Silky Sullivan for colts and geldings. Kevin and Kimberly Nish’s KMN Racing had the strong 6-5 favorite I’m So Anna in the $76,800 Campanile. Te imposing dark bay daughter of Fast Anna defnitely looked the part leading the feld

of nine fllies to the starting gate. Departing from the rail, leading Golden Gate jockey Kyle Frey surprised some when he gunned I’m So Anna to the early lead over expected pacesetter and second choice Squared Shady. I’m So Anna held her position along the inside while maintaining at least a length’s advantage over Squared Shady through solid quarter-mile fractions of :22.84, :46.75, and 1:11.11. Squared Shady mounted a challenge leaving the far turn, but I’m So Anna was up to the task under slight urging from Frey and drew clear for a 2 1⁄2-length triumph, her third in 10 lifetime starts and second stakes victory. She also won the Pike Place Dancer Stakes as a 2-year-old on the Golden Gate turf last Halloween. Amazen Grazen rallied for second in the Campanile, while Squared Shady tired to third. Te fnal time was 1:36.93. “We were really concerned when they reached the stretch considering the (fast) fractions,” said Kevin Nish, who said the couple watched the race on TVG from Florida, where they now make their home. “But when we saw no one coming from behind, we felt better. When your horse wins, you’re always excited.” Te Nishes bred I’m So Anna from the winning Jet West mare So So Fast, a Calbred who is part of a broodmare band they have assembled in Kentucky, Kevin Nish said. Her sire, 10-year-old Fast Anna, stood at Tree Chimneys Farm in Kentucky but died in February as the result of laminitis. I’m So Anna was foaled at Pete and Evelyn Parrella’s Legacy Ranch, located in the San Joaquin Valley near Clements, making her eligible for state-bred races under California breeding rules. Te Nishes are part of a syndicate standing the stallion Straight Fire, runner-up in the 2016 Del Mar Futurity (G1), at Legacy. Te Nishes began their breeding operation about a decade ago after experiencing early success in the racing business in owner partnerships with the 2012-13 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) winner Mizdirection, as well as 2013 Eclipse Award-winning juvenile champion Shared Belief. Golden State Series—Fran’s Valentine Stakes

Jack Sims’ homebred Leggs Galore takes the Fran’s Valentine over favored Warren’s Showtime

A GRAND DAY LEGGS GALORE KICKS AWAY TO WIN FRAN’S VALENTINE BY TRACY GANTZ

W

illiam “Jack” Sims knows his California-bred flly Leggs Galore well because he raised her at his home in Evanston, Wyo. However, due to the pandemic, he never had a chance to see her race in person until the $98,000 Fran’s Valentine Stakes May 9 at Santa Anita. Leggs Galore put on a show, leading throughout to win her third stakes of 2021. “I hadn’t seen her in over a year,” said Sims. “I had a grand day at the races. I appreciated getting to go to the races.” Even though Leggs Galore earlier

this year had captured the $152,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint Stakes Presented by John Deere and the $101,000 Irish O’Brien Stakes, she didn’t go favored. In a feld of four after the scratches of Bella Vita and Lofty, bettors made Warren’s Showtime the 7-10 favorite, with Leggs Galore the second choice at 2-1. “Tat Warren’s Showtime is a very nice horse, so we were really tickled,” said Sims. Leggs Galore had not yet competed in a graded race whereas Warren’s Showtime had won the $101,000 Autumn Miss Stakes (G3T) last October at the same one-mile turf distance at Santa Anita. Warren’s Showtime was also voted champion Cal-bred 3-yearold female of 2020. Lofty often set the pace in her races, and because she was scratched out of the Fran’s Valentine, Leggs Galore was able to forge to the front early. Jockey Ricardo Gonazlez let her post early fractions

of :23 and :46.77. “When I saw the splits, I thought they’re going to have (difculty) catching us,” said Sims. In fact, none of the three could catch Leggs Galore, though Warren’s Showtime valiantly tried to close in the stretch. Leggs Galore held her of to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:34.85. Pulpit Rider fnished third. “Te main thing with her is trying to get her to relax, get a breather down the backside,” said Gonzalez. “I knew that if she got it—that little breather— that she would be just fne because her speed is her main weapon.” Sims praised trainer Phil D’Amato. “Phil’s a genuine good guy,” Sims said. “Phil’s very easy to deal with. He’s a humble person and gives credit for the people who work for him. And they deserve that. Phil’s a hard worker.” Sims had horses in training with the late Mike Mitchell. D’Amato worked as Mitchell’s assistant, which is how Sims initially met D’Amato. D’Amato said that the Fran’s Valentine victory “opens the big door to where we have two options and just kind of pick the right spot that suits her best.” While all three of her stakes victories have come on the turf, this was the frst one around two turns. Sims purchased the Indian Charlie mare Cashing Tickets, the dam of Leggs Galore, for $55,000 in the name of McKenzie Bloodstock at the 2016 Keeneland November sale. Cashing Tickets was in foal to Bayern at the time of the sale, and she foaled Leggs Galore in California the following March. Sims bred the mare back to his stallion Stormberg, who stood at NexStar Farm. Cashing Tickets has a yearling flly by Into Mischief that Sims plans to ofer for sale at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July sale. Te mare produced a flly by Good Magic this year and has been bred back to Instagrand, a son of Into Mischief who won the 2018 Best Pal Stakes (G2) at Del Mar.

at Golden Gate Fields. Acclimate set the pace, as he usually does, with jockey Flavien Prat guiding him to fractions of :23.60, :47.58, and 1:11.39. Desmond Doss raced in second while Brandothebartender, who drew the outside post, tucked into the rail in fourth for Umberto Rispoli. “He’s a nice horse to ride—you can put him wherever you want,” said Rispoli. North County Guy, who sat in a good stalking position in third, made his bid on the second turn. He grabbed the lead from Acclimate in midstretch, but Rispoli swung Brandothebartender wide and they came fying. Brandothebartender forged ahead late to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:35.04. North County Guy fnished second over Acclimate by a length. “He’s versatile,” said Rispoli. “You could put him on the street—he can run on the

street. I don’t think he’s afraid about anything, and he proves that with the years.” Dollase complimented Rispoli on keeping Brandothebartender out of trouble and in the clear. “Tis horse makes my job easy,” said Dollase. “We’re very blessed to have him.” Dollase paid Brandothebartender a high compliment when he said the gelding reminded him of Awesome Gem. Tat gelding, trained by Dollase, earned nearly $3 million and was a multiple graded winner. “He doesn’t owe us anything,” said Dollase. “He’s as honest as the day is long.” John Haagsma and Wesley Ward bred Brandothebartender, a son of Tribal Rule—Frysland, by Stravinsky. Haagsma and Ward also bred Lost Bus, a half sister to Brandothebartender and champion California-bred older female of 2016.

rainer Eric Kruljac and owners Robert Fetkin, John Sondereker, and Richard Tornburgh didn’t set out to breed a graded California-bred runner. But all four men gleefully posed with Te Chosen Vron in the Santa Anita winner’s circle after the $98,000 Lazaro Barrera Stakes (G3) May 15. “He’s a pretty exciting horse,” said Kruljac. “When you breed them yourself, there’s just that extra pride that goes into it.” Te trek to the Barrera began when Class Racing purchased Tiz Molly, a paternal granddaughter of Cal-bred champion Tiznow and now the dam of Te Chosen Vron. Tiz Molly cost $25,000 at the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale and came from the consignment of her breeder, Lantern Hill Farm. “His mother started of like she was going to be a stakes horse,” said Kruljac. “She won her frst two starts in open company, and then she hurt herself on the grass. She hurt her hind end, so we decided to give

28

her a chance and breed her.” Twice they went to perennial leading California sire Unusual Heat. Superhotamolly placed, but Tizhotndusty won three races and earned $130,348. “Tizhotndusty almost broke his open conditions,” said Kruljac. “So it turned out a good idea to breed Tiz Molly.” Once Unusual Heat was pensioned, they bred Tiz Molly to Vronsky, resulting in Te Chosen Vron. Te Barrera was bittersweet for Vronsky’s connections. Te 22-year-old stallion died of an apparent heart attack about two weeks before the race. Te Chosen Vron brought a record of two wins and a third in three starts to the 61⁄2-furlong Barrera. One win came in the Echo Eddie Stakes while the third was to Concert Tour and Freedom Fighter in the San Vicente Stakes (G2).

Te Barrera drew a feld of four, with favoritism going back and forth between Te Chosen Vron and Laurel River, a well-bred maiden winner owned and bred by Juddmonte Farms and trained by Bob Bafert. “Somebody plunged,” said Kruljac. “We were 6-5, 7-5, but we went of at 3-5.” Laurel River ended up as the second choice at 6-5 after being favored earlier in the wagering. Cal-bred I’ll Stand Taller, one of two trained by Doug O’Neill, dueled with Laurel River for the early lead. Laurel River clicked of the frst quarter-mile in :21.32. “Tese short felds can be like match races,” said Kruljac. “I knew my horse could rate, though.” Te early fractions also encouraged Sondereker’s hopes. “When I saw the fractions, I thought we have got a shot,” Sondereker said. Umberto Rispoli was riding Te Chosen Vron for the frst time. He and Te Chosen Vron waited in fourth early. “I could see they were going really fast,” Rispoli said. Te Chosen Vron moved into second on the rail in the turn and angled outside of Laurel River for the stretch run. “He really kicked well in the stretch,” Rispoli said. Tat kick took Te Chosen Vron past Laurel River fairly easily, and he scored by 31⁄2 lengths in 1:16.28. Laurel River fnished 10 lengths ahead of third-place Wipe the Slate. After the race Rispoli came over to Kruljac and threw an arm around him. “Tis man, when I frst came here, he gave me so many winners,” said the jockey. “I’m so glad to fnally win a stakes for him.”

Fasig-Tipton conducted its inaugural 2-year-old sale at Santa Anita in 2019, and it has also held a fall yearling sale in 2019 and 2020 in California at Fairplex Park. A total of 105 2-year-olds have been cataloged for the 2-year-old sale, which boasts strong sire power, from both local and national stallions. In addition, Fasig-Tipton is planning to accept a few select supplemental entries. Santa Anita is offering two $75,000 stakes closing day, June 20, for 2-year-olds at fve furlongs. Te Fasig-Tipton Futurity is for all 2-year-olds while the Fasig-Tipton Debutante is for 2-year-old fllies. “Some of these horses might be eligible for the Ship & Win program,” said Fasig-Tipton’s California representative Mike Machowsky. “Maybe some will come run in the Santa Anita stakes closing weekend and then sell a few days later. We are so thankful for the support from Santa Anita to help us generate this program.” Te 2-year-old sale is an integral part of Fasig-Tipton’s sale strategy in California. It dovetails with the fall yearling sale, giving people a place to buy and sell California-breds. “Te idea is to have a quality 2-year-old sale to come back in after the yearling sale,” said Machowsky. “People who race in California want Cal-breds and want to be able to run in these Cal-bred races. It’s a great program.” Square Eddie, now pensioned but still a leading California sire, has a colt and a flly in the catalog. Kim McCarthy’s McCarthy Bloodstock has consigned both of them, the colt out of the Uncle Mo mare Mo Style and the flly, named Paleo’s Princess, out of the Irish-bred Indian Ridge mare Paleo. Paul and Zillah Reddam’s Reddam Racing, the leading California breeders of 2020, stood Square Eddie and won the 2016 Kentucky Derby (G1) with Nyquist. Developing into a stellar stallion in Kentucky, Nyquist has two in the catalog. dd Henry might have just been a $2,500 claimer, but the Texas-bred flly is the reason John Haagsma got hooked on racing. In partnership with Harold Tillema and his father, John D. Haagsma, the younger Haagsma frst got involved in the sport as an owner via Odd Henry, who broke her maiden at Los Alamitos July 8, 1995. “Tat frst win got me hooked,” Haagsma admitted. Horse racing was not a foreign concept to Haagsma, whose grandfather Dave Haagsma raced Quarter Horses at both Los Alamitos and Fairplex in Pomona. John Sr. took his son to the

races regularly, but nothing matched the thrill of winning as an owner or breeder, a feeling Haagsma started to chase. He was involved in the California Cup-winning broodmare Teresa’s Pleasure, who had captured the inaugural Juvenile Fillies in 1990. When her breeder/owner, Lester Smith, passed away, Teresa’s Pleasure was offered to Tillema and his partners, who bred and/or raced her offspring, including multiple stakes winners Excessive Teresa and Lesters Boy. A third stakes star, Teresa’s Tizzy, was claimed away from them in her fourth start, but went on to earn $660,271 with multiple stakes wins, including a grade 3. Teresa’s Pleasure also has foaled a

fourth stakes winner, Teresa’s Year, whom they raced. Haagsma enjoyed having horses with trainers Rafael Becerra and Brian Koriner before partnering with Wesley Ward, a decision that led to a multitude of success. Ward bred Frysland, a California-bred daughter of Stravinsky—Symphonynumbernine, by Aloha Prospector, and the Haagsma father and son team bought into her. Frysland was out of a full sister to Unfnished Symph, a four-time graded stakes winner of $651,145. “Wesley said he had a really good flly, and asked if we were interested,” Haagsma recalled. “She won a couple of races for us.” Frysland won two of eight starts with fve top three efforts, and was fourth in her lone stakes try at Del Mar. She was retired and for Haagsma and Ward produced the Songandaprayer gelding Hockeythehayman, named after the senior Haagsma, a hay dealer whose longtime nickname was “Hockey.” Hockeythehayman won four of fve career starts and was stakes-placed at Gulfstream Park. Next up came Magoo, a gelding by Bring the Heat out of Frysland. Magoo won eight times and set a track record for four furlongs during the Barretts Race Meet at Fairplex in 2013. In 2012, Lost Bus was born. A full sister to Magoo, Lost Bus ultimately won fve of 16 starts, including the $201,000 Santa Monica Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita in 2016. A clean environment and proper care are necessary for the health and development of foals

DIARRHEA IN YOUNG FOALS LEARNING TO AVOID SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS

I

ntestinal infections can be deadly for young foals, especially in the frst days and weeks of life. A clean environment, good care and monitoring, and being proactive to head of or deal with any problems are very important.

Dr. Ernest H. Martinez II, of the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, who also serves on the board of directors of the Mixed Animal Veterinary Associates North America (MAVANA), has a practice that includes emergency feld medicine, herd health and wellness, neonatal foal care, and mare and

stallion reproduction. He says newborn foals (technically the frst 24 hours through the frst week of life) are most at risk for intestinal infections, so it is crucial to deal with any diarrhea at this age quickly and aggressively, preferably by experienced personnel such as a veterinarian.

CAUSES

“Some of the bacterial pathogens seen in young foals with intestinal infection include E. coli, Salmonella, Clostridium perfringens, and C. difcile,” said Martinez. “Te most common virus we see is rotavirus, and most breeding farms vaccinate pregnant mares for rotavirus in the eighth, ninth, and 10th months of pregnancy to help boost antibodies in their colostrum. “Tose are the main pathogens we see though there are some other random, rare ones we might see when doing a diagnostic fecal panel on a sick neonate. If a farm has a big outbreak, the veterinarian might do tests to try to pinpoint the cause.” Some types of diarrhea are not infectious, such as the loose feces that people refer to as foal heat diarrhea or milk scours. “Research has shown that loose feces at this time is not so much caused by the mare’s being in heat but because the foal’s GI tract is changing and transitioning its natural fora,” said Martinez. “Te diarrhea is usually not from anything diferent in the milk but from changes in the gut. Tis is when you might get by with just some probiotic support and some anti-diarrhea medication to coat and soothe the gut lining.” Tese cases won’t need antibiotics but should be monitored to make sure they don’t get worse.

“Tose foals can get really sick, very fast,” Martinez said. “Tey dehydrate quickly and their electrolytes get out of whack. Te damage that can be done to the GI tract from an infection can cause bacteremia (bacteria in the bloodstream) or septicemia, which can quickly be fatal.” Tese young foals have a naïve immune system, and the infection might end up in the joints, with more complications later. A foal with intestinal infection is dull, lying down more than usual, and of feed. Often the frst clue is that the foal is not nursing; the mare might have a full udder or be streaming milk. “At this young age these foals can go downhill quickly,” said Martinez.

Foals with intestinal infections are dull, lie down more than usual, and are off their feed

If diarrhea is severe or the foal is not nursing at all, fuid therapy is important. In the young foal we have to be proactive and aggressive.” — Dr. Ernest H. Martinez II TREATMENT

Because of the risk for septicemia in infectious diarrhea, it’s crucial to put a sick foal on broad-spectrum antibiotics (against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria) and possibly metronidazole to deal with anaerobic bacteria like Clostridia. “Many of these antibiotics are administered IV, but some may be oral,” said Martinez. “We try to identify the pathogen and do a sensitivity test to make sure we are using the right antibiotics. Te typical IV antibiotics might be a combination of Naxel and amikacin, or ampicillin and amikacin, etc. We try to use antibiotics judiciously and reserve some of them for use in the hospital.

“If it’s a virus, there’s not much we can do to treat it, other than supportive care and broad-spectrum antibiotics to head of secondary invaders and protect against bacterial translocation through the gut wall.” If the virus damages the gut lining, pathogenic bacteria may be able to slip through it into the bloodstream. Fluid therapy is also crucial, to keep the foal from becoming too dehydrated. “If diarrhea is severe or the foal is not nursing at all, fuid therapy is important,” said Martinez. “In the young foal, we have to be proactive and aggressive. If the foal has a fever, we can use anti-infammatory/anti-fever medications like Banamine, Ketofen, dipyrone, or Equioxx. But we must use these carefully in young foals; we don’t want to cause gastric ulcers.” Medication may help reduce fever, and the foal may start feeling better and have more interest in suckling. “Tis can be good and bad—the foal needs the nutrients, but you have to make sure the compromised GI tract has good motility and can handle the milk,” said Martinez. “Sometimes you are better of to muzzle the foal and milk out the mare, and put the foal on IV fuids with a little dextrose for

nutrition, and let the gut lining start to heal. Tis helps everything move out and clear out, rather than having food irritate the damaged gut lining, taking longer to heal. “When you take the muzzle of and let the foal nurse again, you have to make sure he doesn’t get too much at once and gorge himself. You might let him suckle for two minutes every hour to see how he handles it. You don’t want him to become colicky and uncomfortable. A sick foal, with an infamed GI tract, must have supervised, monitored nursing or you may have to deal with colic.” You want a gradual transition. If the foal can’t tolerate milk, he might need to be muzzled again for a while and fed intravenously a little longer while the GI tract heals. Ten slowly milk can be reintroduced again. “Another simple treatment if the foal is not nursing, or has a little diarrhea, is to put him on Lactaid, which you can buy at a grocery store,” said Martinez. “Te lactase in it helps break down the milk sugars and make them easier to digest.” Anti-diarrheal medications are also used, and these include a number of binders or pastes to help slow and frm up the diarrhea. “Tese include Pepto-Bismol, various types of binding clays like Relieve Paste, and other anti-diarrheal compounds that bind toxins and hopefully frm up the feces,” Martinez said.. Te foal should also receive anti-ulcer therapy. “Some of these medications include sucralfate, Gastrogard, ranitidine tablets, and other proton-pump inhibitors or materials that coat the mucosa of the stomach,” said Martinez. “Te main sign of ulcers in foals is grinding of the teeth, which signals discomfort. You need to be proactive if the foal might have ulcers because they could get worse, to the point of perforation.” Sick foals are doubly at risk for ulcers because they are not feeling well and their GI tract might not be functioning normally due to diarrhea. “With very young, newborn foals, there may also be hypoxic insults (lack 40

of oxygen during birth) to the gut,” said Martinez, “and this may be why things are not moving through the GI tract like they should. “Te foal nurses and gorges himself, then doesn’t feel good and is stressed and might have a fever because of the bacteria crossing through the gut lining. It’s a vicious cycle that can set him up for ulcers. Choose anti-infammatory and anti-fever medications wisely, to avoid triggering the start of ulcers. Use products least likely to cause ulcers, and save the stronger NSAIDs for a last resort.” Probiotics are often given to sick foals. “Tis may be as simple as using vanilla yogurt containing lactobacillus, which you can get at the grocery store, or some of the diferent probiotics on the market,” said Martinez.

CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED ❙ June 2021 ❙ www.ctba.com

“If you are treating the foal on your own and he’s not on IV fuids, keep an eye on the acid/base balance with blood work. If electrolytes are out of whack, you can supplement with oral electrolytes in the form of baking soda and lite salt. We usually just mix each one of those by itself in a separate syringe and give those to the foal 10 to 15 minutes apart. If you mix them together, they create a ‘volcano’ efect and make a mess.” If the foal is on IV fuids, he can be given nutrients that way, plus the necessary electrolytes to replace what’s being lost through diarrhea. “You need to monitor white cell counts and electrolytes,” said Martinez. “Tese should be checked daily or at least every other day. If the foal is too sick and not responding within 24 to 48 hours to what you are doing on the farm, you may need a second opinion regarding cause and treatment, or need to get the foal to a hospital for more intensive care. “A lot of this care is twice a day, and with a really sick foal you’ll be administering fuids four times a day, every six hours. Antibiotics will be given once or twice a day. Oral meds like Pepto Bismol or diarrhea paste can be given up to four times a day. Probiotics should be given as often as possible. If you are in and out of your bio-hazard suit (to go into the stall), this takes a lot of time each day.” You also must consider the mare. “She may not be getting enough turnout because the foal is stuck in a stall,” said Martinez. “She may have uterine clearance issues right after foaling, so it can be a lot of work. If the foal isn’t nursing, you’ll have to keep milking her out until you get the foal back on the udder.” With an older foal (7 to 10 days old or older), you can usually care for a sick one on the farm. “Tese foals are usually not as critical as the ones that get sick in the frst 24 to 48 hours,” said Martinez. “Te really young ones may be better of in a hospital environment.” With any kind of diarrhea, infectious or non-infectious, the foal has a wet

tail and messy hindquarters, which can “scald” the skin and lead to hair loss. It’s important to protect the delicate skin. “You can use petroleum jelly, mineral oil, or a product called Shiny-Hiny that can be sprayed on,” said Martinez. “Tese create a coating to keep feces from sticking to the skin, preventing the burning irritation and subsequent bare butt.”

son, you don’t want it to be spread through your barn and foaling stalls,” said Martinez. “So it’s crucial to be strict with biosecurity. Tis should include separate handlers for the sick foal, and separate utensils/equipment for that stall. “You may also want to cordon of that end of the barn so you can isolate that foal or foals. If you have the space, you can move them to a diferent barn. “You may not be able to move the

On most breeding farms the new foal is evaluated by a veterinarian within the frst 24 hours of life. Te vet will pull blood and check IgG, making sure there was good transfer of antibodies from colostrum to the foal. “If not, we can give the foal IV plasma to help boost those antibodies up to more protective levels, to give the foal a good start,” said Martinez. Make sure the foal has an adequate amount of high-quality colostrum within the frst hours of life. “You can test colostrum with a refractometer to make sure it has a high specifc gravity,” said Martinez. “Te old-fashioned test was just to put some on the back of your hand to see how thick it is and how quickly it dries.” Tick and sticky is much better than thin and watery. Tin, white, milky colostrum contains fewer antibodies. “On some farms, all foals are prophylactically given hyper-immune plasma. On farms that can aford that expense, giving plasma to all their newborn foals, we usually see healthier foals and less incidence of diarrhea. It’s not a guarantee; there might still be some outbreaks. But overall those foals tend to be healthier during their frst 30 to 35 days of life. “After that, maternal antibodies start to drop and there may be problems later. But these foals are fairly well protected during the frst few weeks.” BIOSECURITY

If a foal gets sick, it’s important to recognize it quickly and isolate that foal. Biosecurity is imperative to keep an infectious diarrhea from spreading to other young foals on the farm. “If it’s the beginning of foaling sea-

help deliver the next foal.” Foot dips for each stall and in and out of the barn can be helpful to make sure pathogens aren’t tracked from the sick foal’s stall to other areas of the barn by people taking care of the foal. “Tere are disposable biosecurity suits or gowns that can be worn over your clothing,” said Martinez. “Tese can help thwart the spread of pathogens. “Te stricter you can be about keep-

Fluid therapy might be necessary to keep the foal from becoming too dehydrated

sick foal to another barn, but you can skip a stall and not put any other horse right next to that one. You don’t want nose-to-nose contact. If there’s only a half wall between stalls and the rest is bars, you could cover or wall of the bars to minimize direct contact or aerosolized fecal pathogens that are shed from the sick foal. “Also be careful how you handle the muck, manure, and old bedding from a sick horse’s stall. If a foal has diarrhea, many pathogens are shed in feces, and the fecal-oral route is how the next foal gets the infection. It may be from manure of your boots, your gloves, or hands when you handle the next foal or

ing everything isolated to that contaminated stall, the better. Tere are many disinfectants that can be used for cleaning aisles and surfaces, and utensils/ tools like pitchforks and brooms that go from stall to stall. “Each stall with a sick foal should be like an isolation unit with its own kit of thermometers, medicine charts, gloves, disinfectant wipes, etc., and you bio-suit up before you go in. Tis can add a lot of time and efort to your day, caring for that foal. But your goal is to protect the next one down the line.” Before that stall is used for any other horse, it must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through May16, 2021.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
