From the EXECUTIVE CORNER TERRY LOVINGIER CTBA CHAIRPERSON

I’VE HAD THE PLEASURE OF SERVING under Don Valpredo and Pete Parrella on the CTBA. I’ve had the pleasure of serving under Mike Pegram, Nick Alexander, and now Gary Fenton on the TOC. I can’t think of fner individuals to sit with on boards. Both TOC and CTBA have active very good board members. A lot of good things are happening in California horse rac-

ing, and it has everything to do with leadership at the racetracks, TOC, CTBA, trainers, and all those at every level. We have all worked together for the betterment of horse racing. Gary Fenton, a managing partner of Little Red Feather Racing Club, is incredibly intelligent and articulate. His March 17 message to the TOC is very much worth reprinting here:

To Our Members,

which, if passed, would legalize sports wagering at tribal casinos and four racetracks (Golden Gate Fields, Santa Anita, Del Mar, and Los Alamitos). For the past three years TOC has been actively involved in all facets of the sports wagering discussion, most recently playing a pivotal role in the negotiations with gaming tribes to ensure racing was included in the Sports Wagering ballot initiative. While it is still early in the process, TOC is hopeful the net result from the legalization of sports wagering in California and new sports gaming revenue-sharing agreements to be negotiated with the racetracks will add as much as $10 million a year in new purse revenues statewide by 2023.

Last month, longtime and respected TOC chairman Nick Alexander stepped down after fve years of service in that demanding role. I was both humbled and honored when the Board voted to elect me the new TOC chairman. One of my priorities as chairman will be to increase the ongoing communication between TOC and our membership. So starting with this letter, please expect a monthly communication from me that is intended to keep you apprised of major developments and to open up pathways for future dialogs on issues that matter to you. I am a frm believer that owners are the driving force in our sport, and as such it is critical to have as many owners as possible actively involved with TOC. So, let’s get to it. SUPPLEMENTAL PURSE INCREASE

Many of you have heard of the supplemental purse enhancements announced in January. To recap, after lengthy negotiations beginning last September, TOC was successful in securing $6,750,000 in extra purse money for 2021 from TVG/ FanDuel and Xpressbet. A big thank you to FanDuel and Te Stronach Group for recognizing the 2020 ADW windfall and providing California owners with an unprecedented injection into our purse accounts. Today we are excited to announce we fnalized the 2021 track allotments that are based on a variety of factors, including the amount of ADW wagering on each California track over the past few years:

TERRY LOVINGIER PHOTO: © BENOIT PHOTO

Santa Anita Park:.....................................$3,268,687.50 Del Mar Thoroughbred Club:................$2,172,312.50 Golden Gate:....................................................$715,000 Los Alamitos:....................................................$459,000 CARF:.................................................................$135,000

If anyone sees Vice Chairman Bob Liewald at the races, give him his due props for being the guiding light behind much of the ADW negotiations. Tese new purses are already having a positive impact. Santa Anita raised purses 10% for its current meet over 2020 levels with additional mid-meet increases expected in the coming months. Del Mar announced a tremendous summer purse schedule that is approximately 30% higher than 2020. As an example, the purse of maiden special weight races will be $70,000. SPORTS WAGERING

Along with the purse enhancements, many of you have heard about the 2022 California Sports Wagering ballot initiative,

STABLE AND VANNING

Te Stable & Vanning Committee recently gave notice to Southern California trainers that while there will be no noticeable changes to stabling in 2021, the current economics are not sustainable. In 2020 the horse population at our two primary auxiliary facilities in San Luis Rey and Los Alamitos dropped by 50% with costs remaining the same. We are currently taking a deep-dive look into the program in the hopes of outlining a long-term solution. Nothing is of the table, including but not limited to, rebatable stall rent, closing or expanding an auxiliary facility, or putting Del Mar online as a year-round training center. Te Stable & Vanning program is funded equally by the TOC purse account and the racetracks. Every dollar saved is put back into purses. SANTA ANITA PARK APRIL UPDATE

In a sign that we might have fnally reached “the beginning of the end” of the COVID-19 pandemic, Santa Anita Park opened its doors to fans again on Santa Anita Derby weekend. A “capacity crowd” got to witness frsthand a great day of racing that resulted in remarkably strong all-sources wagering handle of more than $25 million! Trough the frst four months of the winter/spring meet, the most important metrics indicate that all TOC tracks show a positive resurgence. Field size is up, handle is up, and catastrophic injuries are down. I want to thank each and every Southern California owner for staying the course with TOC and California racing through the two most difcult years ever for racing at Santa Anita in 2019-20. While horsemen have been bombarded with new rules and regulations over this time, it’s important to note that horseplayers don’t seem to mind the changes as wagering handle continues to grow. If this trend continues, the 2022 winter/spring meet might bring yet another purse bump. Yours truly, Gary Fenton

Ron Parker

Neil French, who trained such stakes winners as California-bred June’s Reward, died of heart failure April 10 at Arcadia Methodist Hospital. He was 68. Despite battling rheumatoid arthritis for a decade, French continued to train a small stable. Among the many stakes winners French trained was Ken Porter’s June’s Reward, a son of Hail Bold King— June Gale, by Run for Nurse. June’s Reward earned $245,940, won the 1992 Wells Fargo Bank California Cup Classic, and fnished third in the 1991 Del Mar Invitational Derby (G2T). During part of their careers, French also conditioned graded stakes-placed Cal-breds Princess V, a Porter homebred daughter of Memo—Fort Silver, by Fort Calgary, and Young Flyer, a John and Betty Mabee homebred daughter of Flying Paster—Youthful Lady, by Youth. During his training career, French won 257 races from 2,080 starters, who earned $6,436,620. His top horses included Pencil Point, a winner of the 1982 Bing Crosby Handicap at Del Mar, as well as Wanstead Gardens, Slew City Citadel, Basic Rate, and Grinding It Out. French’s family was from Wisconsin, and his parents moved to California in 1950 so that his father could become a blacksmith and later a Quarter Horse trainer at Los Alamitos. French initially rode horses for his father and became a licensed trainer in 1971. French’s survivors include his mother, Loretta, and sisters Joy, Joan, and Sundee.

California stallion Gem Heist was represented by his frst winner March 28 when Musical Gem won the fourth race at Santa Anita for maiden 3-year-olds. Another son of Gem Heist, Careless Kitten, fnished second in the six-furlong event, giving the stallion the exacta. Musical Gem is out of the Bertrando mare Musical Recital while Careless Kitten is out of the After Market mare Market Kitten. Bobby Grayson bred both Musical Gem and Careless Kitten. The Bobby and Carol Ann Grayson Living Trust owns both runners, and Val Brinkerhoff trains them.

■ Tough Sunday’s First Foals The frst foals for Nick Alexander’s homebred stallion Tough Sunday have arrived at Alexander’s Horse Haven in Santa Ynez. Alexander is breeding a few of his own mares to Tough Sunday to see what the stallion gets, and if the foals look good Alexander plans to stand him publicly. “These have good bone and are correct,” Alexander said. “I am very happy with all four of these.” One colt and three fllies were foaled within a month of each other. The colt, out of the stakes-placed Afeet Alex mare Shesabronxbomber, arrived March 12. The three fllies followed April 4, April 8, and April 12. The frst flly is out of the winning Bertrando mare Hey Cowboy, a half sister to Alexander’s California-bred champion Enola Gray and the dam of Calbred Althea Gibson, one of Alexander’s current runners. The second one is out of the Bodemeister mare Bodes Well, the mare a half sister to grade 1 winner Wicked Style. And the third is out of the winning Heatseeker mare Share the Sugar, the dam of stakes winner Steph’sfullasugar. Tough Sunday is a 9-year-old multiple graded stakes-placed son of Grazen— Sunday Dress, by General Meeting. For Alexander, he won fve of 22 races, including the 2018 Sensational Star Stakes, and earned $362,228.

Longtime turf writer Ron Parker died March 30 at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, Ky., after a brief battle with cancer. He was 80. Among the many racing publications Parker contributed to during his career was this magazine, having spent the majority of his adult life in the San Francisco Bay Area. His wife, Ellen, also a longtime turf writer, continues to write for this publication. A member of the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters, Ron Parker authored a column for Turf & Sport Digest called “View From the Rail” and also contributed to such racing journals as The Horseman’s Journal and The Thoroughbred Record, often from a humorous point of view. He covered Bay Area racing and did more serious pieces in The Thoroughbred Times. Parker met his wife of 39 years at Golden Gate Fields, where Ellen was working as an assistant in the publicity department and where Ron was covering horse racing. When writing for both this magazine and The Northern California Thoroughbred, Ron frequently featured a wide variety of California-breds, especially his all-time favorite, Native Diver, and Northern California’s own beloved Brown Bess. Since the late 1990s the Parkers collaborated on the publication of their pedigree-focused newsletter “Pedlines,” which covered other Cal-bred favorites such as California Chrome. Born in Tulsa, Okla., Ron was an Army veteran who spent three years in Germany after graduating high school. He then took up his lifelong career of corporate accounting, as well as his professional writing.

Tough Sunday

IN

The Deputy won the Santa Anita Derby (G1) 21 years ago, and his former owners didn’t forget him when he needed them. As can sometimes happen when a horse changes hands many times, The Deputy ended up in a “kill pen,” but former owners Team Valor and Gary Barber and his former trainer, Jenine Sahadi, rescued him. Barry Irwin, CEO of Team Valor and a former editor of this magazine, credited the “Internet monitoring skills” of horse lovers for discovering that The Deputy had gone through a sale in Iowa and was transported to a feedlot in Texas. Irwin, Barber, and Sahadi worked fast to purchase The Deputy, who is now safely housed at Remember Me Rescue, a Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance-accredited operation near Burleson, Texas. Irwin thanked the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and Donna Keen of Remember Me Rescue for playing key roles in quickly securing The Deputy and moving him to the sanctuary. “We decided to have Donna quarantine The Deputy for a while, do some diagnostic

work, including blood (tests) and a fecal (test), and not reveal anything about the rescue until we were certain that he was healthy, as Donna warned us that horses from feedlots can contract diseases quite readily,” Irwin said in a press release. “We want to thank those horse lovers who helped us in our endeavors.” Team Valor and Barber initially bought The Deputy, an Irish-bred son of Petardia—Manfath, by Last Tycoon, after he won a maiden race at England at 2. At Santa Anita the colt won three of four races, including the Santa Anita Derby and the 2000 Santa Catalina Stakes (G2), and he earned $817,270 during his racing career. “I have always had a soft spot in my heart for The Deputy,” said Barber. “He was my frst grade 1 winner.” After his racing career, the stallion stood at stud in Kentucky, Michigan, and Iowa. “He was the easiest horse to be around,” said Sahadi. “All class. He meant a lot to me and my barn.”

UC Davis Scholarships Te California Toroughbred Foundation, in its continuing mission to advance education in equine health, awarded scholarships to Tara Doherty and Briana Hamamoto. Te two well-qualifed candidates study at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Tara plans to extern at Del Mar this summer, as well as with Pioneer Equine Hospital and Littleton Equine Medical Center. She is interested in injury prevention in Tara Doherty equine athletes, both racing and sport horses. With Dr. Sue Stover as her mentor, Tara explored how horseshoe traction characteristics and surface material afect the shear force on the equine limb. She has presented her research at the Veterinary Orthopedic Society Conference and the annual convention of the American Association of Equine Practitioners. She hopes to specialize in large animal surgery or equine sports medicine and rehabilitation, aspiring to work with Toroughbred racehorses and/or show jumpers. Briana is the co-president of the Student Veterinary Emergency Response Team and the Equine MediBriana Hamamoto cine Club. She also serves as the U.C. Davis student representative to the AAEP. She is a graduate student researcher at the Ken L. Maddy Equine Pharmacology Laboratory and works as a volunteer at Willow Oak Equine. As part of her association with the emergency response team, she helped during three recent wildfres in Northern California. Tat experience has led to a desire to become more involved in helping animals and people. As a general equine practitioner, she hopes to focus on pain management.

uring four racing seasons and 33 starts Moscow Burning proved herself to be a quintessential California-bred: tough, game, and fast. Blessed with a tenacious spirit, the daughter of Moscow Ballet–Burning Desire, by Mr. Leader, fought her way to earnings of $1,417,800. She died in 2019 but left an indelible impression on the Golden State.

20

Moscow Burning’s story began long before she was even born, when Offce Queen was named the national champion 3-year-old flly of 1970. Offce Queen that season had won seven stakes, including the Mother Goose Stakes and Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, and she placed in fve other major events. She produced a few winners, but none up to her standards. Ofce Queen’s 1980 daughter by Bold Bidder, Creme Parfait, never raced. Originally sold as a Keeneland September yearling for $275,000, Creme Parfait sold again in 1990 for a mere $13,000. She just happened to be carrying Burning Desire, the dam of Moscow Burn-

Just a month after Burning Desire was born in 1991, the two men defeated star Quarter Horse Griswold with their California-bred Valiant Pete in a famous match race at Santa Anita. While she wasn’t a world-beater, Burning Desire won six of 24 starts, including the $50,000 Black Swan Stakes at Fairplex Park in 1993. She went through several owners on the track via public auction, private sales, and the claim box, including two ownership stints by Pam and Martin Wygod. Her

A Blast From the Past

James Cassidy trained Cal-bred Moscow Burning to win Santa Anita’s Pro or Con Handicap

Mabee Handicap (G1T), third in the $250,000 Del Mar Handicap (G2T) against males, and third again in the $750,000 Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes (G1T) at Belmont Park. In the lastnamed event, Moscow Burning was just a length away from becoming a grade 1 winner and defeated impressive fllies in Film Maker and Wonder Again. Moscow Burning was an 18-1 longshot in the 2004 V05 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) at Lone Star Park. She was facing some of the best mares in the world, including Yesterday, Light Jig, and Megahertz, and still held on for fourth, beaten just 41⁄4 lengths by the great mare Ouija Board. Moscow Burning took home $80,370 of the $1,292,970 purse. Her fnal 2004 start was against males in the $250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup Stakes (G1T). She fnished fourth, beaten less than a length, and although she had won twice on the season, she had earned $627,970. Tat was enough to name her the 2004 Cal-bred champion older female, champion turf female, and Horse of the Year. After a blockbuster season, Moscow Burning ran just four times in 2005. She was of from April until November, returning to win her second California Cup Distance Handicap. She picked up where she left of in 2006, capturing the $500,000 Sunshine Millions Warren’s Toroughbred Filly and Mare Turf Stakes 22

and the $108,700 Pro Or Con Handicap. She didn’t win again, but added two more graded stakes-placings before retirement and was named California’s 2006 champion older female. Moscow Burning went to the breeding shed with 11 wins, eight seconds, and four thirds in 33 starts. She had earned $1,417,800. Just days after running her last race, Moscow Burning was sold at the 2006

Keeneland November sale, bringing a fnal bid of $1 million from Teruya Yoshida’s Shadai Farm in Japan. She was originally bred to Agnes Tachyon but did not get in foal until 2008, when bred to dual grade 1 winner Heart’s Cry. Burning Zeal was Moscow Burning’s frst foal. Te dark bay ran 58 times in four years, and although he just won twice, he fnished in the top three spots 16 times. Moscow Opera, also by Heart’s Cry, came next. She had an even more substantial record, with 20 wins, 13 seconds, and 13 thirds in 71 starts in just four years. An-

other full sibling, Sound Burning, is still in training and has been running since 2014. Sound Burning has started 50 times, with 14 top three eforts, and has earnings of $738,815. A son of fve-time grade 1 winner Daiwa Major, Burning Hero made 38 starts in three seasons. He had six wins, nine seconds, and six thirds, proving himself as consistent and reliable as his siblings. Burning Hero’s full sibling, Gold Paddle, won once in 40 starts. From nine foals born, Moscow Burning had seven to race, with fve winners and progeny earnings of $949,649. She foaled her last colt, another son of Daiwa Major, in 2019, but Moscow Burning died following the birth. “Moscow Burning loved peace and was very gentle to the other mares,” said Shadai Farm representative Miki Ishii. “Just like a nice old lady. However, she did not have any particular friends to be with in the paddock and liked being alone.” Moscow Burning is far from being the only Cal-bred mare that Japanese interests have targeted as potential broodmare prospects. Grade 1 winners Ultra Blend and Dancing Edie were purchased following their racing careers, and Unusual Heat daughters Golden Doc A (a grade 1 winner), Lethal Heat, and Bel Air Sizzle have all called Japan home. Although Moscow Burning has died, her legacy lives on in both California and Japan. She remains the highest-earning California-bred female of all time, edging Fran’s Valentine and Brown Bess for the title. And while she doesn’t have any American-based foals to race, her Japanese daughters are now continuing her legacy with their own ofspring. In 2019, Moscow Opera produced a son of Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2,000 Guineas, G1) winner Isla Bonita. Tat unnamed colt, a juvenile of 2021, brought $42,047 at auction as a yearling last year. After Moscow Burning was given her fourth California champions award in 2006, Van Kempen said that the former Cal-bred claimer became “the most exciting thing you could ever imagine.” Moscow Burning’s toughness and endurance will not be forgotten.

Dr. Mike Harrington fne-tuned his horsemanship from his youth on up through his cowboy days

Staying Young

FROM THE BRONCING YEARS TO THE ROCKING YEARS

BY TRACY GANTZ

“Not many people know that Mike rode as a jockey when he was 11 or 12,” said Patty Harrington, Mike’s wife of more than 40 years. “He rode bush tracks in Oregon. He also did the cowboy thing—steer wrestling and saddle broncs.” Te Harringtons began in the Pacific Northwest, but both have trained for many years in Southern California. California-breds have made up a large part of their stables. Mike trained multiple graded winner Swiss Yodeler, who went on to become a major California sire, and his Cal-bred stakes winners have included homebreds Tilde and Better Bet plus My Honey Bunny and Swiss Wild Cat, 24

orses keep people young. Anyone doubting that truism needs only look to Dr. Mike Harrington. Te longtime owner, breeder, and trainer celebrated his 80th birthday April 5, and he still regularly gets on his pony, Kato, on Southern California backstretches.

all either by Swiss Yodeler or out of Swiss Yodeler mares. Tilde was voted champion Cal-bred 2-year-old flly of 2012. Mike also trained millionaire Creative Cause, a multiple graded winner. Creative Cause fnished third in the 2012 Preakness (G1), won by I’ll Have Another. Mike is a fourth-generation trainer who began with Quarter Horses but quickly segued to Toroughbreds. His eye for a horse led him to select Swiss Yodeler out of the 1995 Keeneland September yearling sale for owner Heinz Steinmann. Trough the years Mike’s clients appreciated his ability as a trainer, as well as his honesty and fairness. Patty notes that her husband is a hard worker who brings a good sense of humor to anything he does. Te Harringtons are continuing to breed, sell, and race Cal-breds. Mike trained graded stakes-placed Empire Way, now standing at the Steinmann family’s farm in Wrightwood, and they have a couple of 2-year-old Cal-breds by the stallion getting ready for the races.

VRON OF A KIND THE CHOSEN VRON SOUNDS OUT IN ECHO EDDIE BY TRACY GANTZ

Te partnership that bred and owns Te Chosen Vron has its roots in Class Racing Stable, where many of them participated. Kruljac trained Tiz Molly, the dam of Te Chosen Vron, for Class Racing, which bought her as a yearling at Keeneland for $25,000. Tiz Molly was a nice allowance winner who earned $74,900. Kruljac put together the Tiz Molly Partners, which bred Te Chosen Vron, a son of California sire Vronsky. Most of the gelding’s owners—Kruljac, Robert Fetkin, John Sondereker, and Richard Tornburgh—are part of Tiz Molly Partners. Te Chosen Vron debuted in the fnal days of his 2-year-old season last year. “After we gelded him, he settled right down and has been very professional ever since,” Kruljac said. Against Cal-bred and Cal-sired company, Te Chosen Vron broke his maiden by an impressive 63∕4 lengths. Tat gave the partnership the confdence to step him up to the $200,000 San Vicente Stakes (G2) Feb. 6, where he fnished third behind Concert Tour and Freedom Fighter. Concert Tour in his next start captured the $1 million Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park. 26

rainer Eric Kruljac is a California-bred, having been born in San Jose and raised in Salinas. Tough he spent much of his early training career in Arizona, where he attended college, he has had plenty of success with Cal-breds, most recently when Te Chosen Vron won the $152,000 Echo Eddie Stakes at Santa Anita April 3.

With Mike Smith in the irons, The Chosen Vron is all alone at the finish of the Echo Eddie Stakes at Santa Anita

In both of his starts before the 61∕2-furlong Echo Eddie, Te Chosen Vron led or was forwardly placed early. But what Kruljac called “a bit of a ruckus” at the start of the Echo Eddie might have led to Te Chosen Vron’s getting away in eighth. Alpine Tunder acted up in the starting gate and had to be scratched. Tat actually allowed Te Chosen Vron to prove to Kruljac that he could take dirt in his face. “He got a ton of it and ran right through it,” said the trainer. Jockey Mike Smith saved ground on the rail with Te Chosen Vron down the backstretch and into the turn. Smith then swung his mount outside of leaders Good With People and Letsgetlucky. Good With People drifted out and made contact with Te Chosen Vron, but Te Chosen Vron continued on well to defeat Good With People by 11∕4 lengths in 1:15.80.

CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED ❙ May 2021 ❙ www.ctba.com

Letsgetlucky fnished third, with Found My Ball fourth. However, the stewards disqualifed Found My Ball to seventh for interfering with None Above the Law, moving Mister Bold into fourth. “It’s nice to know that your horse will run through dirt if need be,” said Kruljac. “And he needed to today. It’s nice to have someone like Mike on your horse because he can go to plan B like that.” Smith praised his mount, saying, “When I asked him, he took dead aim and cruised right past them. Tis horse has a lot of class.” Te Chosen Vron continues Kruljac’s streak with good Cal-breds. Te trainer won the 2005 Test Stakes (G1) at Saratoga with Cal-bred Leave Me Alone and two California Cup races with La Nez. Kruljac also trained multiple stakes-winning Cal-breds Triumphant Flight and Centerofattention.

wner/breeder Nick Alexander is delighted with the new rule at Santa Anita that allows a California-bred to run back at the same condition on the opposite surface.

“We’ve done that now several times,” Alexander said. “It’s a great test to see which they like the best and still run against Cal-breds. I love that rule. It’s been very helpful.” Alexander and trainer Steve Miyadi took advantage of the rule with Alexander’s homebred Becca Taylor. She won on 28

the dirt at Los Alamitos, switched to the turf at Santa Anita, and won again. Becca Taylor added a third victory, back on dirt, prior to capturing the $152,000 Evening Jewel Stakes at 6 1⁄2 furlongs on the dirt April 3. Te Evening Jewel, for 3-year-old fllies, came up especially tough, noted Alexander. “We were running against an American Pharoah (Fi Fi Pharoah),” he said. Nevertheless, Becca Taylor brought the only undefeated record to the race, and bettors backed her accordingly, down to 3-2 favoritism. She also had the services of red-hot jockey Flavien Prat. When the gate opened, second-choice Pray for My Owner went right to the lead while Prat put Becca Taylor into second. “She broke well, and then I wanted to sit right of of the pace,” Prat said. Becca Taylor drew alongside Pray for

My Owner in the turn and took over the lead as she swung into the stretch. Fi Fi Pharoah, who raced wide, made up a good amount of ground after running last early. But she couldn’t catch Becca Taylor, who scored by 21⁄4 lengths in 1:17.15. “She gave a good kick when I asked her to go at the end,” Prat said. “She seems really responsive whether she is coming from behind or already in front, so I wanted to see how she would break and then go from there.” Fi Fi Pharoah, who is out of Cal-bred champion My Fiona, fnished 33⁄4 lengths ahead of third-place I’m So Anna. Alexander named Becca Taylor after his adult niece, who lives in Hawaii. “She hasn’t been able to come out, but she watches her (on TV),” said Alexander of his niece. “We’ve had her involved from the beginning, and she’s very excited. All of her friends are following on social media.” Becca Taylor the flly is a daughter of Old Topper—Lady Sax, by General Meeting. Te late trainer Mike Mitchell claimed Lady Sax for Alexander for $32,000 out of her only start. Lady Sax won that race by two lengths, but she injured herself and never raced again. Lady Sax’s frst foal, Sax, by Benchmark, earned $136,368. Her 2010 foal, stakes winner Hail Mary, by Old Topper, earned $254,188 and placed in the 2013 Railbird Stakes and Evening Jewel Stakes. Several years later bloodstock agent Kathy Berkey recommended that Alexander take the mare back to Old Topper based on how Hail Mary had done. Lady Sax foaled Becca Taylor in 2018. Te flly was the last foal for the mare, who had to be euthanized the following year at age 18. Multiple graded winner Old Topper, who was trained by the late Noble Treewitt, is now 26 and is pensioned at Tommy Town Toroughbreds, where he stood at stud. “Old Topper is a cool horse,” said Alexander. “He was a seven-furlong specialist. He’s produced a lot of runners.”

WHEN DREAMS BECOME REALITIES

eople often have a similar story that explains how they got into the game. Perhaps parents took them to the track as children, or maybe a relative taught them to bet and an early win turned into an obsession. Frederick Larsen’s story is unlike any other, an emotional roller coaster that now has him poised to make a big impact on racing in California. In the late 1990s, Larsen’s parents bought a farm in Phoenix, Ariz., with the idea of getting into the breeding and racing business. Larsen was living in Los Angeles, so they gave him ownership of one foal, who went on to break its maiden at Turf Paradise.

“I fell in love with it,” Larsen recalled. “I was always chasing that next win.” When his mother sufered a massive stroke in 2009, Larsen dropped everything and stepped in to take over the family horse business. “My dad was always out of town working, and my mother was the one talking to the trainers and aware of where all the horses were,” Larsen said. “It was all in her head.” Larsen had a tough job simply tracking down the location of all the horses. He found it too much to handle, so he downsized from nearly 50 horses to just one. “I kept the frst horse that they bred, just one mare,” he said. “She had a Giant’s Causeway colt that we named after my mom before she

passed away in 2012.” Understandably, an electric charge of emotion and high hopes were riding on the colt. He was in training in California when he broke down in his fnal workout before debuting and had to be euthanized. Larsen, rattled from witnessing the incident, walked away from the sport. “Knowing how much connection that horse had with my mom, I couldn’t do it,” he said. “Tat was the last horse she ever saw being born before she died.” Larsen, a single father of two, went about his regular life away from the game until 2019, when he went into the hospital for a suspected kidney stone. “It was a misdiagnosis,” he said. “I coded on the table in the operating room, and the only thing I knew was that two weeks later I woke up on a ventilator. Being kept awake on a ventilator is very scary. You don’t want that feeling, so they kept sedating me.” While under the sedation, Larsen began to have dreams or visions of the horse business. “I felt like my mom was there, showing me a farm, and then showing me horses,” he said. “When I was getting moved out of the ICU, all I could think about was getting back into the horse business.” What should have been an exciting venture for Larsen quickly turned again. He picked up a Noble Mission flly and a Quality Road colt early in 2020, and then the pandemic hit. “I had to take a step back,” he said. “I was analyzing a lot

Owners can receive at least a 20% bonus on the fnisher’s share for fnishing frst through ffth in an open allowance or overnight stake race and up to a 20% bonus for fnishing frst in an open starter allowance above $15,000 and open non-maiden claiming races with a claiming price of $40,000 or greater in Southern California and $20,000 or greater in Northern California. Tese levels are purposely set high to encourage the ownership of high-quality runners and to restrict the number of qualifers so that the awards will function as a major incentive. Owner awards always are paid exclusive of nomination, entry, and starting fees. Tey are listed in the racing program and will be distributed at the same time as the purse by the paymaster. WHAT IS THE MAIDEN BONUS PROGRAM?

A Maiden Bonus award will be paid to the owner of a registered California-bred or registered California-sired foal for winning a maiden special weight race. Te bonus amount is $17,500 in Southern California and $10,000 in Northern California and at all Fair meetings throughout the state. Tese awards are paid directly to the owner approximately 45 racing days after the win. Only races at 4 1/2 furlongs or longer will qualify. WHAT ARE STALLION AWARDS?

In order to stimulate the acquisition in California of nationally prominent stallions, and retain high-caliber California stallions, monetary awards are paid annually to the owners of registered California stallions whose California-conceived or California-bred get have won a qualifying race or have fnished, frst, second, or third in a stakes race in the state or any graded stakes race within the United States during the year. Qualifying races are any non-claiming races, including maiden allowance and starter allowance races, with a purse of at least $15,000, and open non-maiden claiming races with a claiming price 32

of $40,000 or greater in Southern California and $20,000 or greater in Northern California also qualify. Stallion awards are exclusive of nomination, entry, and starting fees. Stallions must be registered by Feb. 15 each year to be eligible for stallion awards. Stallion owners will receive 25% of the remainder of the total incentive award monies after owners awards are paid, with an individual owner of a registered California stallion (as of Dec. 31) receiving a pro-rated share of the stallion fund based on the total qualifying earnings of the get during the year. Te maximum purse considered earned in any qualifying race within this state shall be $330,000 for a win, $120,000 for a second, and $90,000 for a third-place fnish. Te stallion must be continuously present in California from Feb. 1 to July 15, inclusive, of the year 2010 or any subsequent calendar year in which he stood at stud and fathered the participant in the race. If a sire dies in this state in the year 2010 or any subsequent year and stood his last season at stud in this state, or was standing at stud in this state on the date of his death in the year 2010 or any subsequent year, he shall thereafter continue to be considered an eligible Toroughbred stallion regarding a race participant fathered by him in that season. Te California Toroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) will help compile data, but it is the ultimate responsibility of the stallion owner to advise that ofcial registering agency, on or before Feb. 15 of any year, of any and all purses earned during the preceding year that shall be considered in determining the amount of the stallion award to which the owner is entitled. DOES THE PROGRAM INCLUDE RACES OUTSIDE OF CALIFORNIA?

Yes. Te breeder of a California-bred Toroughbred fnishing frst, second, or third in a graded stakes race outside of California, but within the United States, will be paid a pro-rated share of the breeders fund. Te maximum purse considered earned in any race shall be $165,000 for a win, $60,000 for second, and $45,000 for a third-place fnish. CTBA will help compile data, but it is the ultimate responsibility of the breeder to advise the ofcial registering agency (CTBA), on or before Feb. 15 of any year, of any and all purses earned during the preceding year in graded stakes races outside of this state by horses bred by the breeder. Also, the owner of a registered California stallion whose California-conceived or California-bred get fnished frst, second, or third in a graded stakes outside of California, but within the United States, will be paid a pro-rated share of the Stallion fund with the maximum purse considered earned the same as the breeders above. WHEN ARE THE PREMIUMS PAID?

Owners awards are paid at the same time as the purse by the paymaster. Breeders awards are paid twice a year with a conservative advance payment of approximately 6-8% being paid around Sept. 1 and the fnal payment for 2021 being paid by March 31, 2022. Te stallion awards are paid prior to March 31, 2022.

California-Bred Incentive Awards

ARE THERE SPECIAL RACING OPPORTUNITIES FOR CALIFORNIA-BREDS?

Yes. Racetracks in California are required by law to ofer one race per day that is restricted to California-breds. Last year, that amounted to 291 additional racing opportunities and more than $14.8 million in additional purses for California-breds. In addition, the California legislature has declared its intent that at least 10% of the total stakes purses paid at any race meeting in California be paid on stakes races restricted to registered California-breds. Tis amounted to more than $3.5 million in 2020 and will grow signifcantly through the creation of the Golden State Series. Also, in 2022, California Cup XXXII will be held at Santa Anita Park on a date to be announced. Part of the funding for California Cup XXXII will come from the incentive award category, the California-bred Race Fund. 9.5% of the total incentive award monies will be used for this category, with the monies funding the promotion of California-bred races, the supplement of purses for California-bred races, and the creation of new California-bred stakes. WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF A CALIFORNIA-BRED?

Te defnition of a California-bred is as follows: A California-bred Toroughbred is a horse dropped in California after being conceived in California, or any Toroughbred foal dropped by a mare in California if the mare remains in California to be next bred to a Toroughbred stallion standing in the state. If the mare cannot be bred for two successive seasons, but remains in California during that period, her foal will be considered a California-bred.

California by a registered California stallion. A California-sired horse is only eligible for entry in races restricted to California-bred or California-sired horses and is not eligible for any breeder or owner awards, except the maiden bonus awards. HOW DOES ONE REGISTER A CALIFORNIA-BRED OR CALIFORNIA-SIRED HORSE?

Registration applications must be fled with the CTBA. Only those horses that are both registered with Te Jockey Club and fulfll all requirements as outlined in the defnition of a California-bred are eligible. Te fees for registration are as follows: 1) $100.00 for CTBA members, $200.00 for non-members if applied for by Sept. 30 of the foal’s yearling year; 2) $125.00 for CTBA members. $250.00 for non-members if applied for after Sept. 30 of yearling but before Jan. 1 following; and 3) $750.00 if applied for after Jan. 1 of 2-year-old year. If desired, application can be made in advance of receipt of Jockey Club Certifcates to escape penalty for late fling, but no actual registration will be made until certifcates are available. CTBA has representation at California tracks to help facilitate late registrations. HOW CAN I OBTAIN MORE INFORMATION?

Grazers by nature, horses don’t stop eating without a reason

orses go “of feed” for a variety of reasons, so it’s important to fnd out what’s wrong if a horse suddenly stops eating, didn’t clean up his last feeding, or just picks at his food. It might be something simple, such as a bad batch of feed or a dead animal in the hay that the horse can smell, or something serious, such as an ailment or a physical problem that makes it difcult or painful for him to eat.

Dr. Stephen Duren, an equine nutritionist with Performance Horse Nutrition, says that a horse doesn’t stop eating without a reason. “It could be a medical issue; the horse doesn’t feel well,” said Duren. “If he isn’t feeling well, we’d go through a typical medical examination, checking to see if he has a temperature, check heart and respiration rate, and the veterinarian might do some bloodwork to see if there’s an infection of some kind. “Other possible reasons a horse might stop eating could be a change in food quality. Maybe you started feeding a stack of hay that has some weeds

any subtle diference in the feed. “If all the horses stop eating, you can just about be sure it’s the feed. Even if it’s only one horse in the barn or group that suddenly goes of feed, it might be something in that horse’s food. I suggest taking that feed away and opening a diferent bag, or diferent bale of hay, to see if there is something else the horse will eat. “If the horse is not eating his regular feed, will he still eat an apple or a carrot or something else you know he likes, or some green grass? If he doesn’t want to eat that, the problem is something major with the horse himself.

or mold in it. Maybe the grain is old or dried out or insect-infested. Tese can be reasons for a palatability issue and the horse stops eating.” Shannon Pratt Phillips, PhD, a professor of equine nutrition and physiology at North Carolina State University, says that one of the frst things to consider, if the lack of appetite is sudden, would be the feed itself. “Horses are very adept at sensing when something is ‘of’ or diferent,” Phillips said. “It might smell diferent or taste different. Tis acute sense helps them avoid consuming toxic plants; they can detect

Too much work might cause horses in training to lose their appetites for a day or two

“You hear stories of horses’ eating toxic feeds, or a situation where there’s been a formulation error and too much vitamin D or something else in that feed. Tere will always be some horses that eat it anyway and get sick. But there might be some that refuse to eat it.” If you suspect it’s the feed, take a sample and have it checked. You might send it to a lab and see what might be wrong with it, in case it’s a feed manufacturing error. Another possible issue might be the horse’s teeth or mouth—something causing pain or discomfort when eating. Watch the horse eat, and he will give you clues. He might be slow to start eating or take a smell or taste and stop eating. Te horse should be taking feed in, chewing, and not spitting it out or dribbling it out the side of the mouth. If he isn’t eating well, you might look in the mouth, check the tongue and lips (and as much of the inside of the mouth as you can see), and feel around the outside of the jaw. “Tere might be an abscess, and if you press on it while massaging around the jaw, the horse would show a pain response,” said Phillips. “If you think his teeth might be an issue, you might ofer some soaked/ softened feed that would be easier to chew. If the horse seems to eat the softer feed better, suspect a dental problem and have your vet look at the teeth and mouth.” Duren says lack of appetite can also be work-related—too much work and not enough rest. “When a horse is in training or racing,

you may be working him pretty hard,” said Duren. “If you overdo him, he may not feel like eating.” Tis is common in endurance horses because they travel many miles on a regular basis. It might just be one training session that was too hard or long, and the horse is of feed the next day. If you give these horses a day or two of, they often start eating again. “It’s a bigger issue when you’ve been steadily campaigning too hard,” said Duren. “Horses reach peak ftness and then go past that peak and start eating less. Tere’s research in laboratory animals showing that if you increase their exercise, it initially builds appetite. Ten when you get to a certain threshold and get into an overtraining situation, their appetite drops of. Tey start down a path of decreased intake and increased weight loss and decreased performance.” Phillips noted, “Some horses go of feed when stressed. Tis could be transport stress, overwork, or some other kind of stress. Horses doing high-level work or competition may go of feed because of the stress, workload, travel, etc. It may be a combination of stresses. “When horses travel, especially on a fight or hauled a long distance, it may take a day or two for them to recover from that stress and they If every horse in the might be of feed until they get resettled and past barn quits eating, howthe stress.” ever, that’s a diferent You don’t want the situation, and there is horse to be of feed during that time, howevprobably something er, because this would be wrong with the feed.” unhealthy for the diges— Dr. Stephen Duren tive tract. “Do whatever you can during that time to get him to eat,” said Phillips. “Tis might mean ofering soaked hay, soaked hay cubes, perhaps with a little molasses added to the soaked cubes to make them even more palatable. “If it’s a true anorexia, where they won’t eat and you can’t entice them with something else, this would be a medical emergency. You should call your vet to fgure out why. Tere might be discomfort in the digestive tract, a blockage, or something making the horse feel terrible.” Check the pen or stall to see if the horse is passing manure and call your vet. Te veterinarian will take temperature, pulse, and respiration, listen to gut sounds, check mucous membranes, check capillary refll time, and determine if the horse is dehydrated or in shock and fgure out what might be going on. Sometimes the horse is dull and there might be other clues beyond just going of feed that something isn’t right. Phillips said to ask these questions: “Is the horse drinking? Is he drinking but not eating? Is there elevated heart rate (which could be an indication of medical stress)? Assess the horse’s general attitude. When you walk into the stall, is he attentive or dull? “If he’s not sick, but simply stressed or overworked, you might tempt him to eat if you ofer something highly palatable,” Phillips added. “Don’t ofer something so diferent that

he doesn’t want to try it, or something that might be too big a change that could afect the hindgut’s microbial population. If there is already something abnormal going on, this might make it even worse.” Not eating can be the frst sign of many very serious problems, so it’s a good idea to get your veterinarian involved if you can’t immediately fgure out what’s going on with that horse. SOLUTIONS

Horses whose diets contain fresh, palatable ingredients have less trouble with having a lack of appetite

A person can do many things to solve or mitigate lack of appetite in the horse, depending on the problem. A physical/medical problem needs to be addressed. “Te veterinarian will start by asking whether the horse has a fever, a sore mouth, a dental issue, or some disease process and doesn’t feel well,” said Duren. “If the horse was spilling a lot of feed before he quit eating, it could be a dentition issue and he has a sore on the inside of his mouth. “We need to work through a progression of possibilities, which includes medical problems, and if those are ruled out, look at feed quality and then look at what else might have changed, such as the horse’s routine or exercise. “Stabling can be an issue, if the horse’s routine has changed. We’ve seen horses that will eat in a particular stall, yet won’t eat in other stalls. It has to do with the environment, the horses next to them, etc. I work through all of these possible issues before I think about changing a feed, especially if that feed at one point was being readily consumed by that horse. “If every horse in the barn quits eating, however, that’s a diferent situation, and there is probably something wrong with the feed. If it’s just one horse, we need to do some investigating to see what’s wrong with that particular horse. “Tere are a multitude of things that desperate people try to get a horse to eat. Tey start changing everything—feeding a diferent grain, or a diferent hay, or put molasses in the grain, or some other favoring agent. Before I’d try all kinds of new things, if I have a horse that was eating well and suddenly stopped, I’d frst fnd out why he is not eating. I don’t try to add things that mask favors or change things until I know why he quit eating. I try to solve that issue frst. “It’s a little diferent if you have one horse in your barn that has never been a good eater. Te fussy eater might beneft from diet manipulations. But when we feed athletic horses, if we feed them a consistent type of hay and a consistent feed, they eat. When you start adding and subtracting diet ingredients, this in itself encourages a horse to be picky. You are giving him many choices, and he ultimately is going to eat what he likes best and starts being fussy about some of the other things. “We see this a lot with racehorses when people hand mix ingredients of the diet. Tey ultimately have horses that become more picky and fussy about what they eat. Horses do better with a consistent diet that contains fresh, palatable ingredients, and you don’t alter it. Yet some people think a horse would get tired of eating the same thing every day. “Horses are not like people, however, who get bored with the same menu and want to try new things. If a horse’s food is nutritious and palatable, he will keep eating it.”

Not eating can be the frst sign of a serious problem, so if you can’t fgure out the cause, it would be wise to consult your veterinarian

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through April 18, 2021.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
