Breeders’ Cup Winner Honors John Mabee Golden Pal, winner of the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2T) at Keeneland Nov. 6, has a name that should conjure up familiarity for California breeders. Randall Lowe, who bred and races the 2-year-old colt, named him for Golden Eagle Farm and Best Pal. Te late John and Betty Mabee led California breeders for many years and raced in the name of their Golden Eagle Farm in Ramona. Teir fnest runner was the durable and popular Best Pal, three-time California-bred Horse of the Year (from 1990-92), and a member of the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame. Best Pal earned $5,668,245 during the 1990s and is still the third-leading Cal-bred earner of all time, behind California Chrome and Tiznow. Following Golden Pal’s Breeders’ Cup win, Lowe specifcally mentioned how he named the horse. “I named him after my mentor, a gentleman named John C. Mabee, who taught me all about breeding and what to look for, how to do things,” Lowe said. Lowe bred Golden Pal in Florida, but the colt has California roots. He is by Uncle Mo from Lowe’s homebred Midshipman mare Lady Shipman, whose stakes wins include the 2016 Royal North Stakes (G3T). Lady Shipman is out of the Cal-bred mare Sumthingtotalkabt.

Nancy Probert Nancy Probert, who owned and operated Rancho de los Aviadores in Annapolis, Calif., died Nov. 8 at her home. She was 87. Probert’s grandmother introduced her to racing, while her mother was a movie star who was in several westerns and her grandfather was also in the flm industry. Nancy began breeding Thoroughbreds in the early 1960s and became a member of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association in 1963. Probert met her late husband, Dick, co-owner of Catalina Airlines, when she took a ride on his seaplane to Catalina Island. He later hired her as a stewardess on the “Mother Goose,” the company’s four-engine Sikorsky flying boat. They eventually married and blended their love of aviation and her love of horses with their farm. In 1975 the couple purchased 160 acres that included both an airstrip and plenty of room for horses. The Proberts also enjoyed many of what they termed “aviation adventures” together. Through the years the Proberts kept a small band of mares that created the foundation of Nancy’s yearling market program. She supported the sales every year, often with a consignment to the CTBA Northern California yearling sale. Her niece, Colleen Turpin Boyce, helped Nancy develop the farm and the broodmare band. Horses the Proberts bred include multiple stakes winner Bon’s Joy and stakes-placed Cagey Native, both California-breds. In partnership with Robert Cowley, they bred stakes-placed Comic Queen. With Cowley they also bred Workin’ Lady Lee, one of trainer Jeff Bonde’s frst stakes winners. In addition to Boyce, Probert is survived by her sister, Shirley Watkins; another niece, Karen Thyarks; and her nephew, Kevin Ochsner.

well as three grandchildren, brother Jack Dahlberg, sisters Joy Orton and Jana Figueroa, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Paul Haaland Paul Haaland, owner with his family of the California stallion Prospect Park, died Oct. 15 in San Diego at age 48. He had battled glioblastoma brain cancer for 15 months. Paul’s father, David, taught Paul to read the Daily Racing Form at age 6. Paul and his wife, Virginia, named their PVNC Stables for the family’s initials— Paul, Virginia, and daughters Nora and Charlotte. Born in Portland, Ore., but raised in San Diego, Paul studied engineering at Colorado State University, attending on both an academic and golf scholarship and earning a degree in civil engineering. He prepared infrastructure for solar felds in Imperial county and the San Joaquin Valley, and he and Virginia raised their daughters in San Marcos. The family began their foray into racehorse ownership via partnerships, being involved with California-bred multiple stakes-placed Takeo Squared and stakes-placed Kelli’s Smile. They bought Martin and Pam Wygod’s homebred Prospect Park privately in Kentucky as a stallion prospect in 2018. Now 8, the son of Tapit—Quiet Romance, by Bertrando, won the 2015 La Jolla Handicap (G3) and placed in fve other stakes for earnings of $539,770. He stands at Harris Farms in Coalinga, and his frst foals arrived this year. “He was a great horse and was really loved by a lot of people during his career,” said Paul in a member profle in this magazine last year. At the time, Virginia said that standing Prospect Park gave Paul enthusiasm and helped him battle his illness. “The miracle about all this horse stuff,” Virginia said, “is that it would be a much heavier experience for him if he didn’t have this thing to think about, and be excited about.” In addition to his wife and daughters, Haaland is survived by his father, mother Joanne, and two sisters and their families.

Alex Trebek The world knew Alex Trebek as the longtime, popular host of the television game show “Jeopardy.” But in California horse racing circles, he was known for his ownership of Creston Farm in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Trebek died Nov. 8 in Los Angeles at age 80 after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Canada, Trebek was a radio news host and then segued into hosting television game shows. He hosted several, including “High Rollers,” before beginning the relaunch of “Jeopardy” in 1984 that continued through this fall television season. Trebek won daytime Emmy Awards seven times for his work on “Jeopardy” and was one of the most popular game show hosts ever. Trebek owned Creston Farms, previously Cardiff Stud Farm, in Paso Robles. Horses Trebek raced in the Creston name included Reba’s Gold, winner of the 2003 Seabiscuit Handicap (G3) at Bay Meadows and an earner of $717,422. Creston stood several stallions during the time Trebek owned the property. Bloodstock agent and California breeder Adrian Gonzalez worked at Creston as the stallion manager and later leased some of the acreage as part of his Checkmate Thoroughbreds operation.

Favored at 13-10 and ridden by Joel Rosario, Ultra Blend raced in ffth early in the 71⁄2-furlong race and closed three wide to win by 31⁄4 lengths in 1:29.76 over Word Association. She brought $700,000 from Katsumi Yoshida when sold at the 2011 Fasig-Tipton fall mixed sale.

HISTORY

California-bred PIRATE’S REVENGE closed her illustrious racing career with a victory in the $106,900 Bayakoa Handicap (G2). Facing four others, including odds-on Urbane, Pirate’s Revenge raced in fourth early in the 11⁄16-mile race under jockey Chris Antley. She came on strongly to draw off and defeat Urbane by 31⁄2 lengths in 1:414⁄5. Longshot Ashtabula fnished third. Ron Ellis trained Pirate’s Revenge for owner/breeders Martin and Pam Wygod. A 4-year-old daughter of Pirate’s Bounty—Symbolically, by Flying Paster, Pirate’s Revenge was foaled at the Wygods’ River Edge Farm in Buellton. She won nine of 20 races, including that year’s Milady Handicap (G1) and four other stakes, fnished second six times and third once, and earned $521,025.

WINDY TIDE was a well-traveled California-bred, racing throughout his native state, as well as at Agua Caliente in Baja California and even fnishing third in the 1969 Arlington-Washington Futurity in Illinois. He earned his only stakes victory, however, at Bay Meadows in Northern California, capturing the Tropicana Handicap there Dec. 5, 1970, while ridden by Robert Nono. Owned and bred by Mr. and Mrs. Duke Sugich, Windy Tide defeated To Market Jr. by a head in the 11⁄16-mile Tropicana, with Hungry Harry a nose back in third. Jerry Fanning trained the 3-year-old son of leading California sire Windy Sands. Windy Tide was out of the Cal-bred Depth Charge mare Quick Tide. His state-bred roots went deep, as the second dam, stakes-winning Jerry Lee, was also a Cal-bred.

Ferrin Peterson’s Varied Career When the California Toroughbred Foundation awards scholarships to veterinary students, it looks for high-quality candidates who are likely to specialize in equine endeavors. Ferrin Peterson has gone above and beyond anyone’s expectations in that regard. Peterson received a scholarship from the Foundation in 2018, when she was a third-year large animal veterinary student at the University of California at Davis. Tat was also the year she obtained her jockey’s license. Since then, she has graduated from vet school, become a licensed veterinarian, and continued what has become a very successful Ferrin Peterson jockey career. Tis past summer, with Hall of Fame jockey Julie Krone as her agent, 28-year-old Peterson rode at Monmouth Park in New Jersey. She did so well that she ended the meeting as the second-leading rider, with 42 wins, and was featured in a major article in BloodHorse magazine. She moved on to ride regularly at the tough Aqueduct fall meeting in New York. “I think I beneft from having multiple things going on in my life, and they complement each other,” Peterson told Brian Bohl of the New York Racing Association. “Just having that veterinary knowledge and being able to have those conversations with trainers and owners, I think they do appreciate that. Te more you work on horses, on the ground or on their back, the more in-tune you are with them. Tey are just such complex animals. It’s great to be able to understand what they are going through.” Whether as a jockey or as a veterinarian, Peterson will be benefting Toroughbred racehorses. Te Foundation is proud to have had a hand in furthering her career.

hether he was at Keeneland for the Breeders’ Cup or back at Del Mar after the big days, trainer Peter Miller was unstoppable with California-breds from Nov. 6-8. On three consecutive cards, Miller swept all three stakes for Cal-breds or California-sired runners: September Secret in the Nov. 6 Golden State Juvenile Fillies, Good With People in the Nov. 7 Golden State Juvenile, and Mo See Cal in the Nov. 8 Betty Grable Stakes. “Great weekend,” said Miller at Del Mar Nov. 8 in a classic understatement. “Good run at the Breeders’ Cup and then to win all three stakes here. What could be better than that?” Miller fnished second in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) to the popular Whitmore with C Z Rocket, but did even better at his home track. Only Good With People was favored, and all three Cal-breds

Good With People is a homebred for J. Kirk and Judy Robison by the young sire Curlin to Mischief. And Mo See Cal is a $25,000 claim by Rockingham Ranch and a daughter of Kentucky sire Uncle Mo.

September Secret came about through a series of serendipitous events, not the least of which was breeder Jennifer Saavedra working for the Toroughbred Owners of California. She bought Sweetest Secret, a Cal-bred daughter of Sea of Secrets and the dam of September Secret, for $5,700 from agent Sam Hendricks at the 2011 Barretts fall yearling sale. Co-owned by Jennifer and trained by Anthony, Sweetest Secret won three races and earned $90,900. “She won frst time out in maiden special weight, and we got the Cal-bred bonus,” Jennifer said. ANNE M. EBERHARDT

Following the two 2-year-old stakes, the Golden State Series turned to older fllies and mares for the $101,000 Betty Grable Stakes Nov. 8 at seven furlongs on the dirt. Warren’s Showtime, fresh of a victory in the $101,000 Autumn Miss Stakes (G3T) at a mile on the turf, was the second choice to Just Grazed Me, winner of the $100,000 California Distaf Handicap at 51⁄2 furlongs on the turf Oct. 10. Mo See Cal was the 4-1 third choice, despite being of since fnishing third in the 2019 Betty Grable. She had undergone knee surgery for bone chips, and Miller took his time bringing her back. It paid of. “It’s good distance for her, and we fgured it’s a good spot to bring her back,” Miller said a few days before the race. Rozamund Barclay bred the 5-yearold daughter of Uncle Mo—Do Dat Blues, by Lydgate. Do Dat Blues earned $246,219 during her racing career and won the 2010 Princess Stakes and Louisiana Stallion Stakes at Louisiana Downs. Barclay bought her from James Keogh for $35,000 at the 2014 Keeneland November sale. Te mare was carrying Mo See Cal at the time of the sale. Mo See Cal was a $70,000 buy-back at the 2016 Keeneland September yearling sale, and she began her racing career for owner Reddam Racing and trainer Doug O’Neill. Miller claimed her for Gary Hartunian’s Rockingham Ranch for $25,000 when she fnished second at Santa Anita in mid-2018. By the time of the 2020 Betty Grable, Mo See Cal had not won a stakes. Flavien Prat, back from the Breeders’ Cup, piloted Mo See Cal. Miller added blinkers to the flly’s equipment. “We put blinkers on because she’s won with them before and I’m kind of a tinkerer,” said Miller. “She’d also won without them.” Mo See Cal prompted the pace early from third with Miss Megan on the lead, going the frst quarter-mile in :23.34. On the turn Mo See Cal ranged up alongside Miss Megan and took over for a dynamite stretch run. Mo See Cal just kept widening on the feld, eventually scoring by 33⁄4 lengths in 1:25.01 on a track labeled good. Warren’s Showtime got up for second over Just Grazed Me in third. “We were just cruising on the backside,” said Prat. “When we came up to the turn, I decided to see what she could do. She responded well.” Miller praised Prat’s “great ride,” adding, “He knew it was time to go and he went.” Mo See Cal was winning her frst stakes, but sixth race overall, bringing her earnings to $342,664.

The safety of the animals should be the frst concern in building a new farm

Building a Better Farm BY EMILY SHIELDS

T

here are thousands of horse farms all over the world, with their sprawling paddocks and stout barns acting as a siren call to those in the industry. Te properties are built to withstand both elements of weather and the mischievous tendencies of its resident equines. But what exactly makes up the perfect barn, or the best fence? Fencing is virtually always the frst thing visible at a horse farm. But

28

from lavish white panels to utilitarian piping, which fencing makes the most sense? Tere are pros and cons to each kind, with no fencing being a catch-all perfect option. “Wood fencing is standard in Kentucky,” said Kevin Dickson, farm manager of Barton Toroughbreds in Santa Ynez. “You’ve got to have post and board wood; it’s what you see in most farms. Te main thing is that it’s fairly low maintenance and fairly safe because if a horse hits it, then the board breaks, and it is easy to repair.” While wood fencing might look fashy, piping requires less maintenance. Farm owner Tom Clark of

Rancho San Miguel said, “We’ve got iron piping here. It is more durable and cheaper to maintain, which really helps. Tere’s no painting involved. Especially with the economics of the horse business in California, you have to fnd ways to conserve your capital. Te downside is that kind doesn’t give as much as wood, so if a horse hits it there is potentially more injury than with wood fencing. But we honestly have very few incidents of that.” Most California farms seem to agree on a phenomenon that surprised Dickson on arrival in the central coast area. “Te fences here are laced with wire,” he said. “Tat was new to me when I arrived. I wasn’t sure how to take it at frst, but now I think it’s a wonderful thing.” Te wire in question is a metal mesh that runs inside the fencing and wraps around the outside of the top board, which prevents cribbing. It is similar to chicken wire, but distinctly hardier. “It’s very durable, very stout rectangular patterns,” Dickson said. “It goes all the way to the ground. Tey can’t eat the wood away, and you can’t get wavy boards.” But even the mesh has its downside. “We run into issues with maintaining the wire,” he admitted. “It can become a poke hazard, and the big staples that afx the wire to the fencing can pop loose. We check for staples on the ground. But every sort of fencing will have its good and bad sides.” Sue Greene of Woodbridge Farm is the frst to admit she would love to redo her fencing. “To be completely honest, this property was built before World War II,” she said. “It’s four-railing wood covered with V-mesh wire on the perimeter. But if I could do it again, I would go with pipe fencing—at least 51⁄2 or six foot high—and covered with the V-mesh. It’s just the easiest to maintain.” Greene noted that no matter what is installed, horses will fnd a way to exploit it. “Tere is no such thing as a fence that a horse can’t get hurt in,” she said. “If a horse is going to crash a fence, it doesn’t matter what you have up. Tat said, I don’t have many injuries with fencing. I think what I have is very safe.” Katie Fisher had spent a lot of time developing her Kingfsher Farms to be exact-

wash down,” she said. She also used to have a kind of barn she wouldn’t mind having again one day. “I had a farm in Los Angeles briefy where those 2 x 12 wood panels simply slid out so that you could change the stalls from 12 x 12 to 12 x 24. If I built another barn, I would do that again so that you can move the walls around. It’s not truly portable, but it’s great for stall size if you need it.” Clark recommends having good drainage. “In our barn dedicated to foaling out babies, we have a drain in the middle of each stall so that once the foal is born we can easily wash it down and the water drains right out,” he said. “Tat makes it more sanitary.” Once the fencing and the barns are in place, the only other need is maintenance. “We’ve got a team dedicated just to maintenance and landscape support on the farm,” Clark said. “We’ve got the tractors and wagons and mowers. We do bring in experts from time to time to get outside help in the overall maintenance of the felds. But the guys take care of the structures.” “We do it in-house,” Dickson agreed, regarding maintenance. “Te biggest thing to keep an eye on in the stalls is if they build up too much moisture after a few years, such as if you leave shavings against the inside wall and it corrodes the steel or tin coating. We’ve had to replace whole sections of those. But it’s something easy we can do in-house, and then you’re good for a long time. Te life of the stalls is rather lengthy, and they’re made very safely.” While there are relatively few types of fencing to choose from, there is a barn design for every need, and safety need not be compromised in any layout. With the right setup, both horses and humans can be happy, confdent, and ready for success. RON MESAROS

Williamson and Williamson, the name of our partnership.” Many star horses then wore those famous red and yellow silks with two stacked Ws. “We had a great time together and realized how much we enjoyed working together,” Williamson said. “Over the years I assimilated a lot of the responsibilities. People thought the ‘WW’ on the silks was for Warren Williamson, but it was for Williamson and Williamson.” Warren died in March 2018, leaving behind a California legacy that his son plans to uphold. “I had been working on our Kentucky-based operation, making sure the babies were coming along,” he said. “I had some horses with friends coming into racing and was part of other syndicates. After Dad passed away, I decided to take it all on.” Te decision wasn’t as simple as it might seem. “Tere were a lot of moving pieces,” he said. “But the goal is

COURTESY OF HENRY WILLIAMSON

CONTINUING THE FAMILY TRADITION

enry Williamson is the frst to admit that horse racing “sinks into your DNA after a while.” He would know, as a grandmother on one side of the family and a grandfather on the other side held box seats at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park for years. Ten his father, the late Warren Williamson, bred and owned some of the best modern runners in the state. Trough it all, the younger Williamson has been there, relishing every moment. “It’s not that I keep track of stuff like this,” Williamson joked, “but the frst time we saw the winner’s circle in California was on Aug. 3, 1972. I was 10 years old.” Williamson’s father was hooked and began breeding horses locally in California. Warren bred and/or raced the likes of grade 1-winning California-bred millionaire Nashoba’s Key, dual grade 2 winner Foxysox, and the ultra-quick

Cal-bred Tiz Elemental, who won three straight stakes races. “Tere were quite a few moments where we were in disbelief of our success,” Henry Williamson said. “A lot of our good ones were Cal-breds, but they were wonderfully bred. It was really a lot of fun, and it exposed all of his grandchildren—my kids—to the sport as well. Now they are into it and following it as well.” Williamson was quick to give credit to the other players on the team, such as trainer Carla Gaines and the crew at Harris Farms, where many of the family’s best horses were raised. But while horses such as Cal-bred stakes winners Tiz a Blend and Excessive Blend were grabbing the headlines, Williamson himself was mostly working behind the scenes. “A lot of people don’t know this, but I owned horses with my dad in the 1990s,” he said. “We claimed a horse together named Tiny Boots through trainer Bob Marshall in 1996. We designed silks together for

to try to keep the family together. By that I mean the horses are part of our family, so that’s what we’re doing. I want to keep the colors fying and be back in the winner’s circle in Southern California.” Williamson has two horses on the track in California, both with Gaines. American Heights is a daughter of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah who fnished ffth while sprinting in her Nov. 15 debut. Another runner, Lady Crocker, is a Curlin flly out of Foxysox who is named after Williamson’s box seat-holding grandmother. Lady Crocker is in the midst of training for her return. He also has runners around the country, with winners Madame Overserved at Indiana Grand, Kadesh at Churchill Downs, and grade 3-placed stakes winner Visitant running at Keeneland last out. Having runners is nice, but it is the breeding industry that Williamson is tackling next. Two years ago he acquired the old Valley Creek Farm and is debuting it in 2021 as Arroyo Vista Farm. Miguel “Mike” Jimenez, formerly the manager at Ballena Vista, grew up on this property and will return to manage it later this year. “He told me it’s like coming home,” Williamson said. Broodmares will be moving in between Tanksgiving and the New Year. It is a project that is something of a completed dream for Williamson. “Tis is something my dad and I were trying to do many years ago,” he said. “I was glad when this place became available, and I’ve been glad to get it ready for our horses.” Williamson has six broodmares in California and fve in Kentucky although some of those are scheduled to move to the Golden State. Te cornerstone of the farm is Texas Ryano, a royally bred chestnut horse by Curlin out of “the best mare we ever had,” Blending Element. She was a graded stakes winner in her own right who produced Tiz a Blend, Tiz Elemental, Excessive Blend, Holladay Road, and Texas Ryano, who is named for Williamson’s

University of Texas graduate son Ryan Lando Williamson. Texas Ryano earned $455,045 with fve wins, three seconds, and three thirds in 22 starts. He was a grade 2 winner at Del Mar and grade 2-placed at Santa Anita in 2016. He also ran sixth in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1T) behind Highland Reel. “He’s a physical specimen,” Williamson said. “He’s got wonderful scope and balance. I honestly think he looks like he could go back to the racetrack now. He retired sound, and we didn’t know whether we were going to invest and try to build him as a stallion. But being by Curlin and out of arguably our best mare ever, if there was a time to do it, this was it.”

Texas Ryano stood his frst season in 2018, with his frst yearlings selling this fall. “Ever since he was foaled in Kentucky, we thought he was something special,” Williamson said. “We hope that translates into the breeding shed. He’s throwing a lot of the same types of bodies.” With the move to the new farm underway, Williamson has plenty on his plate. “I’ve been getting everything restored to where it needs to be,” he said. “I plan on being there three to four days a week, and Mike Jimenez will be staying in the house on the grounds. And if anyone else wants their mares and foals to grow up there, I’m hoping we might have a few guests, too.”

HOCK INJURIES INJURIES HOCK DEALING WITH A FREQUENTLY OCCURRING PROBLEM

BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS

T

he hock is one of the largest, most complex, and hardest-worked joints in the horse’s body, so it must be strong and sturdy to avoid injury. Te hock is often under great stress because of the activities we ask the horse to do, and it might be injured during high-speed performance. Te hock is similar to the human ankle, with the same seven bones.

38

Dr. Jillian Mills, of Presidio Equine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation in Encinitas, Calif., says hock injuries are interesting because this joint is a combination of high- and low-motion joints. “Tese joints can undergo diferent pathological changes that can lead to clinically relevant disease,” Mills explained. “A lot of times with hocks we will see acute traumatic injuries, DOD (developmental orthopedic disease), or fatigue-related injuries. Acute inju-

ries often involve fractures, which may include the tibia and cannon bones, as well as collateral and intra-articular ligament injuries. “Te upper joint (the high-motion joint) more often has developmental issues such as OCD fragments and subchondral bone cystic lesions. If there is an OCD fragment, the horse may need surgery to have the fragment removed. However, this is not always the case. “We know that the joint environment is not as healthy as it would be if an OCD lesion was not present. On a

Fatigue-related problems might include subchondral bone disease and breakdown of the joint’s cartilage. When that happens, we have to manage these horses for arthritis.” — Dr. Jillian Mills

“In cases of underperformance, we might look at a horse and see that it is a little bit short-strided in both hind limbs and a bit worse on the inside versus the outside of a circle, and positive to fexion. We might have a discussion with the owner about medicating the

joint as a diagnostic therapeutic, which is essentially a treatment trial to see if the horse improves. “Bilateral hind-limb asymmetry is most common in an arthritis type of presentation versus something acute, where you might detect pronounced

pre-purchase exam, it may be difcult to determine whether the osteochondral fragments will need to be removed surgically. For a young horse that hasn’t had the opportunity to prove itself, if we fnd an osteochondral fragment in a joint that carries excess fuid, where the horse trots of lame following fexion testing, there’s a higher probability that it will need surgery to remove that chip. Te presence of the OCD fragment is an indication that the joint is less healthy, and the horse is more prone to developing arthritis.” By contrast, if the horse is 10 years old and has already proved itself at the buyer’s prospective level of competition, the OCD lesion on a pre-purchase exam might not be an issue. “With racehorses, however, we are generally dealing with a signifcantly younger population of horses with a shorter prospective career,” said Mills. “So surgery is often recommended. “Fatigue-related problems might include subchondral bone disease and breakdown of the joint’s cartilage. When that happens, we have to manage these horses for arthritis. We sometimes see arthritis in the upper joint, but this is signifcantly less common than in the lower joints and often results in debilitating lameness. Usually, when we’re talking about fatigue-related injuries in the hock, we are dealing with arthritis in the lower hock joints rather than the upper joint.” If there are changes in the upper joint, these clinical signs generally include a signifcant increase in joint fuid, which can be seen as a pronounced swelling. “If there is an osteochondral fragment in there, there is often joint swelling and the horse may show positive to fexion testing,” said Mills. “However, when a horse reacts positively to hock fexion, this is not a specifc fnding. Pain could be originating from any of the joints. “With the lower joints, sometimes we can palpate thickening of the joint capsule. But you cannot palpably determine an increase in joint fuid. It’s more of a clinical assessment, especially if we are not doing blocks.

Health occur early in training or when they start racing. Te horse has to stop training and have the chip removed surgically. Some of those horses can get back to work and training within 90 days or so and don’t miss very much time.” If the problem is discovered early and taken care of, the outcome is usually good. “More commonly, the hock problems we see in young horses are just a soreness,” said Peters. “As the horse starts

soft-tissue swelling in the joint. In those situations, we often see a unilateral lameness, meaning only one limb is afected. “Between the talus and the calcaneus, within the high-motion tarsocrural joint, there is another articulation called the talocalcaneal joint. Tis is a low-motion articulation that can also develop arthritis. When this occurs, the pain can be quite debilitating and extremely difcult to manage. But this is

also relatively rare.” Dr. Duncan Peters, DVM, of EastWest Equine Sports Medicine in Lexington, Ky., says we often see hock soreness in athletic horses due to strain and stress. “In young horses (weanlings and yearlings), we may see OCD or bone cysts in the hock joints,” Peters said. “Tese defects are usually discovered early on, and many are taken care of surgically. Occasionally, some of those are not evident until the young horse starts training and then gets a small osteochondral fragment (usually in the tibial tarsal joint) and associated swelling and lameness within the joint. “Most of those chips in the joint will 40

working and being asked to do more, the hock joints get sore, just because of the mechanics of that area of the leg. Te hock is unique because the upper joint is a high-motion joint and the lower joints are low-motion but must endure a lot of concussion. Tose lower joints are held together with many small ligaments—holding those two rows of small bones together.” If there is too much strain on the hock, infammation can occur in the ligaments holding those small bones together, as well as infammation within the joint itself—which causes synovitis in the joint. “Depending on what we fnd, it may require a diferent course of treatment,”

CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED ❙ December 2020 ❙ www.ctba.com

said Peters. “Te other thing we might see in some of those young horses coming into racing is some bone soreness related to concussion in the lower joints. Tis may depend on the surfaces they are working on, the level of activity, and the maturity and quality of the bone.” Some of these horses will sufer bone bruising and bone soreness. Synovitis and bone trauma can lead to arthritis in those lower joints. “Tis can progress and become serious if not taken care of early on,” said Peters. “Usually, we will use some injections in those joints (steroids, hyaluronic acid, IRAP, stem cells, platelet rich plasma, amnionic fuid isolates, etc.) in an efort to reduce the infammation and curb the development of arthritis. We’ll also back of on the exercise and training for a while. “If there is bone soreness and trauma—perhaps some micro-fractures associated with the bone bruising—it may take four to six months before the horse can go back to work. Racehorse people don’t like to miss that much time in training/racing. “If the joint has synovitis, many of those horses will respond favorably if we change their routine a little, backing of on the level of work and treating the joints themselves with injections. Tose horses may only lose two to four weeks of work and then get right back to it.” Several of these problems can show up with similar signs, but might need a completely diferent course of treatment and a diferent length of time of, in terms of how they respond. “Another thing that’s interesting about the hock is that there is sometimes some involvement with the proximal suspensory ligament,” said Peters. “Tere may be some pain-causing damage to that ligament where it originates at the back of the hock. Tis may actually be the primary problem that leads to secondary hock problems. We fnd this on MRIs more than with any other type of diagnostic tool. “Tese horses won’t be performing well. Tey will have a soft-tissue problem related to the origin of the suspen-

— Dr. Duncan Peters

“Tere may be collateral ligament injuries,” said Peters. “Tese are interesting because the hock has two sets of collateral ligaments. One set is under tension during fexion, and the other set is under tension during extension of the hock joint. Occasionally, we see some ligament damage in one or the other set, depending on what kind of trauma occurred. Collateral ligament injury can certainly occur, but is not quite as common.” Basically, the things that can happen to the hock joints in a young horse are osteochondral fragments (chips) in the upper tibial tarsal joint, infammation in any of the three joints for a variety of reasons (generally related to exercise), associated soreness of the proximal suspensory apparatus (as part of the functioning unit of the hock), and collateral ligament injuries. Some of these injuries might be due to the horse’s conformation, which can put more stress on certain parts of the joint, or just an occasional bad step. 42

If it’s embedded in the joint capsule and not foating around in the joint, it might not be a problem. “I think the bigger problem is what that chip represents,” said Cassells. “If it’s due to a defect in the cartilage, this may be more of an issue than the Radiograph showing a chip in a horse’s hock chip itself. The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through Nov. 15, 2020.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
