SPORTS WAGERING AMID THE PANDEMIC

T

he coronavirus pandemic has had a devastating impact on our country, with too many lives lost, people sufering, the economy, and even our mental health. It also put a sudden stop to the collection of signatures for the tribal initiative to authorize sports wagering supported by California horse racing. Te tribes had hoped to have it on the November 2020 ballot, but that was not possible in the wake of COVID-19. A very wise woman, the immortal Dolly Parton, is fond of saying, “Te way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” Personally, I’m a big fan of rain, but the point is there are brighter days ahead. Te tribes fled a lawsuit with the Superior Court of California seeking their full allotment of time to gather signatures. Teir eforts

were successful, and they now have until Dec. 14 to obtain the required number of signatures to qualify for the 2022 ballot. Te tribes had spent approximately $7 million by mid-March before the stay-at-home orders went out from the governor. Te tribes tell me they will reach the million and a half signatures they need in order to meet the almost one million verifed signatures before December. Te tribal initiative would authorize tribal casinos and designated racetracks to ofer legalized sports wagering in their brickand-mortar facilities and would allow additional games for tribes. Te proposal does not allow card rooms to participate or allow for mobile or online wagering. At CTBA we have worked hard to build a strong relationship with our tribal friends and fnd ways to work together, as

opposed to letting past disagreements prevent us from moving forward to grow and enhance our opportunities. We will continue to seek common ground. We also expect to see an efort in the legislature next year to put something directly on the ballot. Rumors persist that Draft Kings and FanDuel want a piece of the legal sports wagering pie, along with card rooms and professional sports teams. Teir model is founded in mobile and online, currently exclusive to pari-mutuel wagering. Some tribes will fght this with all their worth, and some might actually work with the legislature to delay the implementation date and negotiate the details, such as protecting Class III gaming. If the legislature does pass something next year, this would set up competing ballot initiatives on the November 2022 ballot.

He earned $81,086. “Faversham overcame several obstacles, including a torn tendon, to win races in California and Kentucky for us,” said Perry Martin. “He always tried his best and managed to carve his own identity from the immense shadow cast by his big brother, who was the rarest of all Thoroughbreds—the horse of a lifetime.” The Martins plan to support Faversham with several mares previously bred to California Chrome, who is now standing in Japan. Texas Ryano, a graded stakes-winning son of Curlin, has moved to Arroyo Vista in Valley Center for the 2021 breeding season. The stallion’s frst foals are yearlings of 2020, and he previously stood at Ballena Vista Farm. Bred by Williamson Racing and campaigned by Warren Williamson, Texas Ryano won the 2016 Hollywood Turf Cup (G2T) and 2015 King Pellinore Stakes and placed in two other graded events. Carla Gaines trained him to earnings of $455,045. Texas Ryano Texas Ryano is by two-time Horse of the Year Curlin out of the graded stakes-winning Great Commotion mare Blending Element. The mare has produced graded stakes winner Tiz Elemental and three other stakes winners. At the recent Fasig-Tipton California yearling sale, Texas Ryano had several yearlings sell. Gaines bought the top-priced one, a daughter of the Lonhro mare Lauren’s Export, for $47,000.

California-bred Tiznow, twice winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) and national Horse of the Year in 2000, has been pensioned from stud duty at age 23. WinStar Farm in Kentucky made the announcement as part of its unveiling of 2021 stud fees. WinStar called it “a changing of the guard” and paid tribute to Tiznow’s many accomplishments. He remains the only two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, and he earned $6,427,830 on the racetrack. That puts him second only to California Chrome among all-time leading Calbred earners. Tiznow was twice named Cal-bred Horse of the Year, in 2000 and 2001. As a sire, Tiznow was known as the “big-horse sire,” according to WinStar. He sired 15 grade 1 winners, including Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Well Armed, Santa Anita Derby (G1) and Travers Stakes (G1) winner Colonel John, and Breeders’ Cup winners Folklore and Tourist. Cecilia Straub Rubens bred Tiznow, a son of Cee’s Tizzy—Cee’s Song, by Seattle Song, and Tiznow was foaled at John Harris’ Harris Farms in Coalinga. Our Mission Carries On Under Difcult Conditions Te pandemic has caused large and small changes in many aspects of the horse world. In spite of the downturns, the California Toroughbred Foundation made some adjustments and continues to fund veterinary medicine scholarships, our primary mission. Te students training to provide for the health and safety of the horse still need our support. Across the country, tracks have curtailed or canceled their meetings. Racing has continued in California, but without spectators and with limited access for owners. Sales have gone on but only with precautions such as social distancing and access by video. One thing that has not changed is the needs of horses, including their health care. Our Foundation is vitally involved in promoting this area by awarding scholarships at U. C. Davis and Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona to veterinary medicine students, carefully selected because of their interest in horses and intention of working with them upon graduation. Several of our recipients have joined the veterinary safety teams at Santa Anita and Del Mar. Additionally, we created the Louis R. Rowan Fellowship in Equine Research at Davis. Helping develop veterinarians and funding research are unquestionably essential. However, we cannot do it without your support. Please help us with a gift today. Your help is invaluable if you care about the welfare of horses.

Donations We are a 501(c)(3) non-proft organization. Please make checks payable to California Toroughbred Foundation and send to 201 Colorado Place, Arcadia, CA 91007. For credit cards, PayPal, and other forms of donation, please call (626) 445-7800 ext. 221 or visit our website page at www.ctba.com and click on California Toroughbred Foundation.

Sweet Catomine is by Storm Cat out of the mare Sweet Life who was named 2009 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year. The family’s history runs deep, Sweet Life is a half sister to grade 1 winner and California Champion Pirate’s Revenge and two additional stakes winners. Rumpus Cat was able to win going 1 1/16 miles on turf in his seventh start, but it wasn’t for lack of trying. Among those he faced in maiden special weight company early in his 3-year old season at Santa Anita was eventual grade 1 winner Mongolian Groom. NEXT GENERATION SEEKS TO TAKE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED FARM INTO THE FUTURE BY JUSTIN OLDFIELD

griculture has a storied and celebrated tradition in this country— passing on the family farm to the next generation. At Daehling Ranch in Elk Grove, this happened with the passing of my father-in-law, longtime California Toroughbred Breeders Association member, breeder and farm owner Joe Daehling, on Tanksgiving Day 2019. With the help and support of Joe’s loving wife, June, and my wife, Julia (Joe’s daughter), we have eagerly taken on the responsibility of following Joe’s almost 40-year legacy. We are proud to continue to ofer our valued clients, and prospective clients, a full-service breeding and Toroughbred training facility in Northern California. Joe and June’s hard work set a frm foundation for Daehling Ranch that Julia and I remain committed to ofering our clients—a professional and service-oriented facility at a reasonable cost. Without a doubt, 2020 ushered in signifcant social and fnancial challenges for us all. As we hope for the current situation with COVID-19 to end and for conditions on the racetrack to return to normal, Daehling Ranch has not faltered in its support for California’s Toroughbred racing and breeding industry, even amidst a transition at home. Given that our clients trust their horses to our care, I believe it’s important to take some time to introduce ourselves and share some details about our lives. Julia and I have well-rounded

agricultural business experience that we believe serves our clients well. In addition to our Toroughbred and farming operations, I am also the executive director of the California Cattle Council and spent 12 years serving as the lead advocate for the California Cattlemen’s Association in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. Needless to say, agriculture runs in our blood. Upon us both returning home from college and getting married in 2005, Julia and I made the farm our home and began actively participating in the hard work that is required to run a successful agricultural business in California. Our passion for the farm and seeing it successful is coupled with the signifcant experience of our dedicated employees, many of whom have been with us for decades. Our passion is now being shared with our young children, who have already developed an interest in becoming the third generation of

owning and operating Daehling Ranch. Our knowledge and passion for horses also goes beyond the Toroughbred industry. Julia has been riding horses for her entire life. At age 16, she began her own breeding program and actively trained of-track Toroughbreds to provide them the opportunity of a second career. Julia rode and trained competitively in dressage for many years and was a founding member of the collegiate team at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo during her time in college. When Julia and I frst began dating, Joe made it clear to Julia that any prospective husband needed to hold his own around horses. I, in turn, had a passion for history and wedded this passion with riding. Prior to starting a family, my horse Sophie and I participated in historic Civil War battle reenactments as a member of the calvary and as a mounted ofcer. It was both a fun and challenging experience.

In addition to ofering a full suite of breeding services, along with a number of proven stallions, we also have one of Northern California’s only large breaking-and-training facilities. Along with longtime farm manager Francisco Gomez, we are excited to announce the addition of Mariah Coles as our lead trainer. Mariah and her assistant trainer and exercise rider, Luis Pena, have signifcant experience breaking and training young horses. Among other amenities, the training facility features a three-furlong racetrack with proper footing, a large indoor round pen, and a Eurociser. Mariah came to Daehling Ranch 28

highly recommended and has a strong training record with several Northern California trainers. She is eager to grow our breaking-and-training business and will bring her professional knowledge and passion for horses to every horse in the training barn. Mariah has been training horses for more than 10 years. Her passion for the Toroughbred industry began when she frst started training of-track Toroughbreds for successful second careers. As her experience and passion for the Toroughbred industry grew, she began starting and breaking Toroughbreds for the racetrack. Since that time, she has suc-

cessfully broken, trained, and sent numerous horses to the track, including several winners. In every case, owners, trainers, and exercise riders have been very happy with her work. Mariah takes pride in starting a well-minded, willing, and confdent horse. Our clients routinely recognize the strong riding abilities of Luis, which spans more than 10 years. Together as a team, Mariah and Luis ofer Toroughbred owners throughout California the ability to have their horses broken and ready for the racetrack at a reasonable rate. Tey do this by applying the right techniques to ensure the horses in their care are well taken care of, riders are safe, and ultimately horses are properly prepared for their life ahead. We also pride ourselves on the philosophy of care we apply to all horses boarded at Daehling Ranch. Simply stated, we allow horses to be horses. Te ranch ofers more than 200 acres of lush irrigated pasture that are easily accessible to visitors. Pastures are irrigated every seven to 10 days, and horses are rotated to provide fresh feed and to maintain the health of the grass. In addition, all horses are fed a supplemental grain ration daily that is formulated by an equine nutritionist. As racehorse owners ourselves, we also share a strong desire to see our sport carry on far into the future. We will always seek to do what is best for our customers while their horses are in our care. However, we also recognize it is critical to collectively partner with our clients in an efort to keep the sport we love, the industry behind it, and the valued contributions of all those that work to support Toroughbred racing and breeding in this state vibrant for generations to come. If you are currently a client of Daehling Ranch, we thank you. If you are a previous client, we welcome you back. If you are a prospective client looking for additional information about our services, we encourage you to contact us directly to schedule a visit to the ranch. Please visit our website at www.daehlingranch.com for more information regarding our operation, training facility, and the stallions standing at Daehling Ranch.

Spiced Perfection

John Brocklebank and Luis Mendez develop talent that lasts! We offer a training program with an understanding of what it takes during the early stages of a young horse that get results whether you want them to be prepared (1) to race, (2) to point for an auction to sell, or (3) to race and sell at the racetrack. We broke and prepared such top California-breds to race or sell as graded stakes winners SPICED PERFECTION (G1), BROTHER DEREK (G1), RIVERS PRAYER (G1), COVER GAL (G2), GERVINHO (G2), SOLID WAGER (G3) and SHADOW OF ILLINOIS (G3), as well as recent California two-year-old champions CALIFORNIA DIAMOND and CRUEL INTENTION. Â In 2020 alone, our program has produced at least 8 two-yearold stakes horses. Two-year-olds we prepared won the four out of first five races at Santa Anita. We then continued to do extremely well at Del Mar winning the Graduation Stakes with POSITIVITY, after winning the same race in 2019 with BIG RETURNS, and the Del Mar Futurity (G1) with DR SCHIVEL. Since Luis Mendez started training at racetracks in California two years ago, he has trained until the end of summer and then

Wait a minute—how’s that? Well, Lovingier claimed Lost Bus for $32,000 in 2015 because he remembered how well she had run against My Fiona. Lost Bus went on to win the 2016 Santa Monica Stakes (G2) and was named that season’s Cal-bred champion older female. Following the retirement from racing of My Fiona and Lost Bus, Lovingier bred them both to Stay Tirsty. My Fiona’s yearling colt topped the 2020 sale at $200,000, while Lost Bus’ yearling colt brought the third-highest price of $110,000. It was only one of the many Cal-bred angles to the Oct. 19 sale, which had to switch from Pomona to Los Alamitos because of COVID-19 restrictions. Paul Jones, the all-time champion trainer of Quarter Horse racehorses, is based at Los Alamitos, and he bought a Cal-bred. Te entire catalog was predominantly 32

Regional Sales Mandella purchased If Id Told You for $70,000 from Andy Havens’ Havens Bloodstock Agency at the 2018 Barretts select yearling sale. “So we decided to go back in and try, and we were happy to get this one,” Mandella said. “I liked her as an individual—I thought she was very athletic.” After Barretts stopped its sales, Fasig-Tipton returned to California in 2019, conducting both 2-year-old and yearling sales. COVID-19 restrictions in Los Angeles county forced the cancellation of the 2-year-old sale at Santa Anita and the move of the yearling sale from Pomona to Los Alamitos in Orange county, which has less restrictive COVID rules. Buyers came from a wide variety of places, and Los Alamitos as a venue certainly helped with the sale to Quarter Horse training superstar Jones. Treetime winner of Quarter Horse racing’s biggest event, the All-American Futurity (G1), Jones bought a Cal-bred son of Creative Cause for $22,000 with Robyn Gordon. Havens Bloodstock Agency consigned the colt, who is out of the Roman Ruler mare Feature Attraction. Boyd Browning Jr., Fasig-Tipton’s president and chief executive ofcer, praised Dr. Ed Allred, owner of Los Alamitos, for stepping up and allowing Fasig-Tipton to conduct the sale there. It occurred just two weeks after Los Alamitos held its annual Quarter Horse sale. Fasig-Tipton put its auction stand in the winner’s circle/walking ring and sold there, allowing buyers to bid from the apron as well as upstairs in the Vessels Club. “I have to begin by thanking Doc Allred and the team and the staf at Los Alamitos,” said Browning, “because without their cooperation and efort and willingness to pitch in and help out the Toroughbred industry, this sale would not have taken place.” Browning discussed the importance of California sales and that Fasig-Tipton is committed to conducting sales in the state to help the industry. While it is difcult to plan with the current COVID-19 situation, he said the company expects to conduct a 2-year-old sale and yearling sale in California in 2021.

G

alilean, the 3-2 favorite in the $100,000 California Flag Handicap, not only had to run gamely to score by a nose, but he had to sweat out a lengthy inquiry as well. Te stewards ultimately decided there would be no change in the 51⁄2-furlong turf contest, leaving California-bred Galilean as the victor.

36

Bred by Bar C Racing Stables and owned by the partnership of West Point Toroughbreds, Denise Barker, William Sandbrook, John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, and Derrick Smith, Galilean has proved to be a shrewd purchase. A $600,000 juvenile buy for West Point Toroughbreds, the son of Uncle Mo— Fresia, by El Prado, was foaled at John Harris’ Harris Farms in Coalinga and his dam was bred back to Unusual Heat. Since his initial purchase, Galilean has gathered a record of six wins in 12 starts, with a second and three thirds, for total earnings of $577,098. He debuted with a victory in the $100,000 Barretts Juvenile Stakes in 2018, then added the $100,000 King Glorious Stakes before the year was out. At 3, the strapping bay won the $188,000 California Cup Derby before fnding himself on the Triple Crown trail,

fnishing third in the Rebel Stakes (G2) and ffth in the Arkansas Derby (G1). Away from the races from April 13 until Feb. 20 of this year, Galilean took three tries to get his groove back but did so in style, reeling of wins in the $101,500 Soi Phet Stakes at Los Alamitos and $127,500 California Dreamin’ Stakes at Del Mar. He completed a Southern California stakes trifecta with his win in the Oct. 11 California Flag Handicap at Santa Anita. Under jockey Umberto Rispoli, Galilean tracked pacesetting speedster Mikes Tiznow in second before pouncing in the stretch. As Galilean took the lead, Ultimate Bango slipped through on the rail. Te two dueled and Galilean drifted in a bit, before they reached the line with just a head separating them. Galilean had fnished frst in 1:02.13, with Rookie Mistake back in third. After an inquiry, the stewards ruled that Galilean’s drifting in caused Mikes Tiznow to check but did not cost him a placing and so made no change. “What a cool horse,” said West Point Toroughbreds CEO Terry Finley of Galilean. “He has done just about everything now, sprint or route on the dirt, sprint or route on the turf. He’s always been an incredible specimen. Six stakes wins, almost $600,000 in earnings, and still a lot to look forward to from him.” Winning trainer John Sadler, who took over from Jerry Hollendorfer this year, said after the race, “He’s a really good horse. Tis is the third stakes we’ve won with him, and he’s won six overall now. He’s got so much class.” Fresia was a Sam-Son Farm-bred, Canadian-based racehorse who raced there before being sold at the 2015 Keeneland November sale while carrying Galilean for just $35,000. Since then she has had just one live foal, a Harbor the Gold juvenile named Harbored Memories who is in training on the Southern California circuit. Fresia was bred to Goldencents for 2021. With options on dirt or turf and against Cal-breds or open company, Galilean will have no shortage of available opportunities.

Te popular 5-year-old California-bred mare by Grazen—Fairway Road, by Cuvee, added a fourth stakes win to her tally in the turf sprint at Santa Anita Park. She now has seven wins and 12 top-three eforts in 14 starts for earnings of $494,332, prompting Alexander to say, “She comes from modest beginnings but she’s made of iron and never lets me down.” Just Grazed Me’s dam was a stakes winner at Fairplex Park as a juvenile, but fnished her career at the $12,500 level before Alexander bought her privately. Her frst foal, Nellie Fox, by Grazen, won three times, but Fairway Road had trouble keeping her foals and didn’t produce another until 2015. Tat was Just Grazed Me, followed by the winning Lucky Pulpit flly Fairly Lucky and the winning Grazen daughter Patsy Cline. All four ofspring to race are winners. While her pedigree might be modest, Just Grazed Me has been anything but on the racetrack. She debuted with a 61⁄4-length win at Santa Anita in 2018, romping on the dirt, and then added the $150,345 Fleet Treat Stakes next out. She had trouble staying healthy and was of from December 2018 to July 2019, but has continued to fourish under the care of trainer Phil D’Amato. In 2019 Just Grazed Me fnished third in the $99,164 Daisycutter Handicap and won an allowance optional claimer on the grass at Del Mar before taking both the California Distaf Handicap and the $101,404 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes (G3T). She then ran fourth

fter Just Grazed Me won the $100,000 California Distaf Handicap Oct. 10, owner/ breeder Nick Alexander noted that he “wouldn’t mind having a barn full of horses like her.”

against males in the $102,500 Sensational Star Stakes and ffth in grade 2 company against fllies and mares. Her class has never wavered, but her weight has. “Te main issue has been trying to keep weight on her,” Alexander said. “Tat’s why we turned her out at the end of this spring.” Just Grazed Me returned from her summer vacation by successfully defending her title in the California Distaf Handicap, having gamely held of the stakes-winning mare Gypsy Blu to score by three-quarters of a length under Umberto Rispoli. Just Grazed Me stopped the clock in 1:02.99 for the 51⁄2-furlong distance. “Tat was a nice flly of Mark Glatt’s that she beat,” Alexander said.

Te win was gratifying to Alexander, who said, “It’s been a lean year for us compared to last year, but Just Grazed Me put a smile on my face for sure. You never know when they haven’t been out for a while, but she really showed her class. She carried way too much weight (126 pounds, eight more than anyone else in the feld), but that didn’t seem to bother her. I couldn’t be happier.” Alexander sold Fairway Road to Norman Tavares for $5,000 at the 2018 Barretts January mixed sale. Te mare has an unraced juvenile flly named Grazen Road, who is a full sister to Just Grazed Me and is working steadily at Golden Gate Fields. Fairway Road’s Smiling Tiger yearling died this year, but she has a weanling Danzing Candy flly and is in foal to Rumpus Cat for 2021.

verything aligned perfectly in the $101,000 Autumn Miss Stakes for Warren’s Showtime. Te gutsy California-bred flly scored in her frst graded stakes for owners Ben and Sally Warren Oct. 17 at Santa Anita while giving her trainer, Craig Lewis, his 1,000th career victory. Lewis couldn’t have hit the milestone with a more appropriate horse. He picked out her sire, Clubhouse Ride, and her dam, Warren’s Veneda, as good prospects and won multiple graded races with both. Clubhouse Ride earned more than $1

million and now stands in California at Pete and Evelyn Parrella’s Legacy Ranch. Warren’s Veneda is a Warren homebred, earned $932,112, and was the Cal-bred champion older female in 2015. “Te best thing was that Craig got his 1,000th win and it happened to be for us,” said Sally Warren. Sally Warren has been friends with Lewis and his family for decades. She recalls talking him into going to the 2010 Barretts January sale when he had a bad cold. Reluctantly, Lewis agreed, and that was where he selected Clubhouse Ride as a young 2-year-old. For Six-S Racing Stable and Nikolas Petralia, Clubhouse Ride won back-to-back Californian Stakes (G2) and is siring winners, many trained by Lewis. After Sally and Ben were married nine

years ago, Lewis visited Ben’s farm in Hemet. Ben told him to pick out a horse or two to train from his feld of yearlings, and Sally says that Lewis selected Warren’s Veneda. Under Lewis’ tutelage, the flly won the 2015 Santa Margarita Stakes (G1) and four other stakes. Ben Warren bred Warren’s Veneda to Clubhouse Ride, and Lewis is doing just as well with Warren’s Showtime. At 2 last year the flly won the Surfer Girl Stakes, and this year she won the California Cup Oaks, China Doll Stakes, and Melair Stakes and placed in two graded events prior to the Autumn Miss at a mile on the turf. Sent away as the 7-10 favorite under Flavien Prat, Warren’s Showtime raced in ffth early. She moved up on the outside in the second turn but still had some work to do in the stretch. Flying late, Warren’s Showtime put her neck in front right at the wire, defeating Going to Vegas in 1:33.77. Te Warrens traveled from their home in Las Vegas to see the race. “It was so exciting,” said Sally. “I didn’t think she was going to get up in time. Te jockey even said he didn’t know if he’d get up in time, but when he asked her to go, she went.” Lewis admitted that he wasn’t sure Warren’s Showtime would make up all that ground either. “But as usual she did not disappoint,” the trainer said. “She’s really a genuine flly—gives it every time.” Tough the Warrens try to travel to all of Warren’s Showtime’s races, they have also watched her on TVG. “Tey’ve been so kind to us about her,” said Sally. “I think that people like her name, and we’ve got a real good following with her. We appreciate all of their enthusiasm with her.” Ben noted that Warren’s Veneda is back in foal to Clubhouse Ride, adding “that’s really something to look forward to.” Lewis thanked the Warrens and other owners who have helped him reach 1,000 victories. “A trainer’s life is not all pie and ice cream,” Lewis said. “But when things like this happen, it makes it all worthwhile.”

continues to fuel their obvious passion for the sport. Te California Chrome story quickly became racing lore, beginning with Love the Chase, a broodmare who earned just $7,020 on the track and cost Martin and his business partner, Steve Coburn, $8,000. Tey bred her to $2,500 stallion Lucky Pulpit and got $14,752,650-earner California Chrome, who won four Eclipse Awards including two Horse of the Year titles. His grade 1 wins include the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, Dubai World Cup, and Pacifc Classic. But it’s what happened next

hen California Chrome was just an unassuming, leggy chestnut foal, Perry and Denise Martin could never have guessed that their frst-ever homebred would take them on such a wild ride. Nine years and numerous stakes wins later, California Chrome’s legacy is at the heart of everything the Martins are doing in the racing industry. As they expand their reach both domestically, with breeding operations in Wyoming and Louisiana, as well as internationally, with horses in Japan and England, it is California Chrome who

that propelled the Martins further into the game. Tey frst met in Chicago, going on dates at tracks such as Maywood Park, Sportsman’s Park, and Hawthorne. Once their children were grown, Perry Martin noted that “we started to dabble in horse partnerships with Blinkers On. Te story from there is fairly well known. We partnered to purchase Love the Chase, bred her to Lucky Pulpit, and experienced the ride of a lifetime as the frst horse we ever bred won the 2014 Kentucky Derby!” Although California-bred California Chrome became a wildly popular runner, it wasn’t the dazzling victories that the Martins remember best. “With Chrome, we have had a lot of thrills and a few heartbreaks,” Martin said. “But what we really enjoyed the most was our Harris Farms visits when Chrome was a youngster. Being able to bond with him and witness frsthand how he was growing up to become a special athlete is probably the main reason we have stayed with Chrome and supported him so heavily in the breeding shed.” California Chrome retired to stud in Kentucky in 2017, but before his frst crop took to the track earlier this year, he was sold to Japan’s JS Company. Te move simply made sense: Japanese interests have done a superb job with American exports, such as Sunday Silence. Just because he moved, however, doesn’t mean the Martins let him slip away entirely. “We received fve lifetime breeding rights so that we

NUTRITION

FOR PREGNANT MARES O 46

THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON FOALS

ver the past three decades we’ve learned more about fne-tuning the nutrition for pregnant mares. Dr. Kathleen Crandell, an equine nutritionist with Kentucky Equine Research, says the nutrient requirements at the time of breeding for individual broodmares can be diferent, depending on whether they are lactating, barren, or maiden mares.

BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS

“Research indicates that mares gaining weight have better conception rates, and that mares losing weight have poorer conception,” Crandell said. “With a lactating mare, there’s a chance she will be losing weight, as she puts so much of her nutrition into producing milk. Tis may have an efect on her ability to conceive or maintain a pregnancy.

We don’t want those mares defcient or losing weight, and we also don’t want them too fat. We want them in a body condition score between 5 and 6 on the Henneke body condition scoring scale. If they are easy keepers on pasture (or pasture and hay), they may just need a vitamin-mineral supplement of some sort. “Often those needs can be met with a mineralized salt when mares are out on pasture, but you have no idea about their actual intake— particularly in a group of mares. If they can be fed individually, using a ration-balancer pellet, this is a good way to supply them with Equine nutritionist Dr. Kathleen Crandell the vitamins and minerals as well as supplemental protein since they don’t need the extra calories of a typical “Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation concentrate. in the forms of EPA and DHA (eicos“If a mare is a hard-keeper, needing apentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic more calories, a concentrate can be fed. acid) have shown promising help for At this early stage of pregnancy, it doesn’t broodmares at breeding time,” said Crannecessarily need to be one that’s formulat- dell. “In a recent study, mares suppleed specifcally for broodmares. Tis is no longer considered reproductive success. Tis was seen in a ideal. Even though these mares might

get enough protein and calories from the pasture, they might be missing some of the other essential nutrients, particularly some of the trace minerals. “During the frst and second trimester, they may need some supplementation to supply the missing nutrients. Tis can be done by feeding a concentrate designed for pregnant mares, or just a ration-balancer if you are trying to keep a mare from gaining too much weight. Practically every feed company today has a product designed for broodmares.” It gets more complicated during the last trimester, since the growth of the fetus is exponential, increasing most rapidly in the later stages of pregnancy. “Tere is hardly any weight gain from the fetus in early pregnancy; it’s mostly an increase in placental tissues until about the seventh month of gestation—and then the fetus grows swiftly,” said Crandell. “Some of the nutrients, like calcium and phosphorus, are important for fetal bone development, along with zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, etc., which need to be supplemented in adequate amounts. If the mare doesn’t have enough in her diet, she will rob these essential nutrients from her own body to supply the needs of the fetus. Te last thing you want is for her to become defcient at this time, shortly before lactation.” In the last trimester, the fetus is accumulating stores of trace minerals in its liver. “Tis gives the foal an adequate supply for a while after it is born, since these minerals are not transferred very well from the mare in the milk,” said Crandell. “Tus, it is important for the pregnant mare to have adequate supply of these minerals in her diet so she won’t deplete her own body while the fetus is developing and storing minerals in its liver.” In late gestation some mares experience weight loss. Often this can be addressed by an increase in the amount of concentrate. “A study looking at maintaining late gestational mares on a forage-only diet of either timothy or alfalfa hay found the mares were unable to maintain their

Proper forage is an important part of the nutritional requirements of pregnant mares

weight on timothy hay alone,” said Crandell. “Timothy hay was not energy-dense enough to support fetal growth/weight gain and the maintenance needs of the mare. “Providing a more calorie-dense forage such as alfalfa helps. In the last month of gestation, a mare may not be able to eat more volume of hay because the bulk of the fetus/placenta in the abdomen will take up more space and constrict the capacity of the digestive tract. Te mare can’t take in as much feed, so to keep her from losing weight, a more calorie-dense feed may be needed. “Providing additional fat (such as vegetable oil) can signifcantly boost calories without adding bulk. However, don’t forget the importance of forage in the diet. You can increase calories by providing a more energy-dense forage like alfalfa or a high-quality alfalfa-grass mix instead of a bulkier, lower-calorie hay like timothy. “If the mare has been maintaining well on grass hay during early pregnancy and mid-pregnancy, you can add some alfalfa during the last trimester to boost calories and nutrients without having to feed so much concentrate.” If you have a mare that typically loses a lot of weight when lactating, you could feed her up to a little heavier weight before she foals, just to be ahead of the curve. “As the calorie count in the diet increas48

es, there is always a concern about whether it will have an efect on the mare’s ability to handle increases in insulin without being detrimental to the mare or her foal,” said Crandell. “While all mares become a little bit insulin-resistant during pregnancy as a natural way to boost glucose delivery to the fetus, there was a study done in Toroughbreds looking at the development of insulin resistance during pregnancy—to measure how much of an

infuence it had on insulin resistance in the foal. In this study there was no detriment (on insulin handling) in newborn foals, but if there is a genetic factor that makes an individual more prone to insulin resistance (outside of pregnancy), that foal may have problems as it matures.” Issues can arise with mares that have insulin resistance problems. “Some of these mares fail to enter seasonal anestrus or may have prolonged periods between heat cycles, and a decline in

age-related fertility,” said Crandell. “It is important to maintain mares with questionable insulin-handling issues at an appropriate body weight and not let them become obese. A recent study looking at the efects of obesity in mares on insulin handling in their foals found that while these mares had heavier foals than non-obese mares, there was no correlation with hyperinsulinemia in the foals. Te foals were found to have more difculty nursing because of the fat deposits around the teats, and the mares had decreased milk production.” In another study, IgG concentrations in colostrum were lower in obese mares. Obesity in the mare can afect the fetus by predisposing the foal to developmental orthopedic disease after birth. “Furthermore, the heavier foals require vigilant monitoring because of the adverse efects on weight-bearing bone development,” said Crandell. Due to improvements in health of older horses, more mares are continuing to be bred at a later age. “Age is another factor that can afect reproductive ability of the mare,” said Crandell. “Vitamin E has been found to support improved fertility in older mares that have trouble conceiving. Older mares can produce healthy, sound foals, but caution should be taken when breeding the mare that has Cushing’s (aka pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction or PPID) because of the adverse efects of the pergolide treatments on milk production. “PPID horses and those diagnosed with insulin resistance before pregnancy will beneft from feeding a diet based on fber as the major energy source, avoiding starch and adding fat to the diet if there is a problem with maintaining weight (such as in late gestation and lactation).” Protein is always needed to build body tissues. “Te mare needs adequate protein in her diet to supply the building blocks for fetal growth and development of the placenta and amniotic tissues; otherwise, she will break down her own muscle tissue to give protein to that foal. To a certain extent, the foal will always have enough, even if the mare robs from her own body. Tis is why mildly protein-defcient mares don’t give birth to smaller foals, but you put those mares at a big disadvantage for

lactation and recovery from the pregnancy (before she can be rebred). Tere is no need for excessive protein, but we have to make sure the mare has adequate protein.” Any excess protein will simply be broken down and excreted in urine. “Horses on pasture usually have adequate protein, especially if you are adding a balancer or a concentrate. If the mare is on a hay diet, however, more attention needs to be paid to the protein content of the hay. Some grass hays are fairly low in protein, so you could add some alfalfa hay and/or a concentrate and ration balancer to boost the protein.” Te lactating mare needs double the amount of protein than does the early gestational mare to produce milk. “If dietary protein is restricted, it will result in a decrease in milk production and decrease in foal growth,” said Crandell. Studies have also been conducted to see whether the quality of diet could infuence the quality of colostrum. “Tose studies looked at nutrients like vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, and bioactive proteins (in serum). Tere was some indication that if a mare is receiving a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids (in the form of DHA), it will improve the IgG concentration in the colostrum. “Bioactive protein supplementation also resulted in higher IgG levels in the mares. Late gestation mares need adequate nutrients and the proper amount of protein in order to create high-quality colostrum that contains adequate antibodies.” Some of the individual nutrients also seem to be very important for the growing fetus. “Research at Cornell University showed that mares receiving inadequate selenium in their diets were much more prone to reproductive problems than mares with adequate selenium,” said Crandell. “Another study, comparing higher versus lower levels of selenium supplementation in late gestational and lactating mares, found higher serum IgG in the foals from mares with the higher level of supplementation up through eight weeks of age.” A study looking at copper supplementation done in New Zealand, where the forages are notorious for being low in copper, found that mares that were supplemented 50

f mares are on pasture or being fed grass hay, fescue can be a concern when they are pregnant— especially during the later stages of gestation. The fescue itself is not a problem, but the endophyte fungus that is often in fescue produces a toxin that can cause agalactia (no milk) in the mare and an over-large fetus that goes beyond due date (prolonged gestation). This may cause dystocia if the foal is too large, and sometimes a thickened placenta. “It’s a very hardy grass and very common in horse pastures,” said Dr. Kathleen Crandell, of Kentucky Equine Research. “It stays green longer into the fall and winter than many other grasses, especially if it is endophyte-infected because that’s what makes it more hardy. It

with copper had foals with lower incidence of physitis and osteochondris dessicans (OCD) at six months of age than mares not receiving supplemental copper, regardless of whether the foals received supplemental copper themselves or not. “It didn’t matter what the foals were fed,” said Crandell. “Te efects were due to what the mares were fed during gestation.” In another study, serum copper levels in supplemented mares were positively correlated with copper in the colostrum and serum copper levels in the foals. “To me, this is an indication of how

may be still green in January and it tastes better (sweeter) after it’s been frozen, so the horses like it in the winter better than they do during the summer months. “Getting pregnant mares off fescue pasture or hay at least 90 days before foaling date is important. You don’t want to take any chances. Fescue may also be lurking in a mixed hay, and you may not realize it contains fescue. So it’s important to check. Make sure you are feeding something like orchardgrass, timothy, or mixed hay that does not contain fescue. Fescue has a wide blade when it is green and growing, but when it dries as hay, the leaf blades ball up and look more wiry. Once you know what it looks like, it is easy to recognize.”

important it is to feed the mare properly during pregnancy,” said Crandell. “You can infuence the health of the foal beyond birth by making sure the mare has proper nutrients in her diet.” Feed manufacturers have made this easy, with feeds designed for broodmares. Tese ensure there is the proper balance of nutrients, such as enough copper, as long as the concentrates are fed within the recommended feeding rates in the diet. “Also make sure that broodmares have salt and plenty of fresh water,” said Crandell. “Tese are important aspects of diet and nutrition as well.”

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through Oct. 25, 2020.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
