Mel Stute

S

Stute trained a list of good runners that would stack up against those of the best trainers in the sport. In Mel’s case, many had one other thing in common—they were bred in California. Stute’s talent with California-breds such as Snow Chief, Telly’s Pop, and Double Discount made him a legend in the California breeding and racing industry and earned his owners both accolades and cash. Te cash didn’t always come just from the purses. Perhaps no one enjoyed placing a wager as much as Stute. Even as his health declined, he continued to patronize the windows. His son, trainer Gary Stute, said that not long before his father died Aug. 12 at age 93, Mel made a fnal wager on a Saratoga Pick 6. It came in. One of Stute’s clients, the late Tom Mankiewicz, was a high-powered screenwriter, director, and producer. Mankiewicz also enjoyed backing his horses at the windows, and he often asked Stute about his horses’ chances. “He had only two forecasts for a race,” Mankiewicz said in 2008. “I’d say, ‘Mel, how do we look?’ One of his answers was, ‘Confdence is high.’ And ‘confdence is high’ meant you were going to fnish fourth or ffth. Or I’d call him and

now Chief began racing 35 years ago. Telly’s Pop and Double Discount go back to the mid-1970s. But if you wandered past a certain table at Santa Anita’s Clockers’ Corner almost any morning and threw out one of those three names, Mel Stute would break into a wide smile. Of he’d go, entertaining anyone who would listen with tales of his long training career.

say, ‘How we going to do tomorrow? I’m coming out.’ And he’d say, ‘Bring money.’ ‘Bring money’ meant we really had a shot. ‘Confdence is high’ meant nothing.” Mankiewicz wasn’t the only Hollywood type who had horses with Stute. Kenneth Dodd and Stute bred Telly’s Pop, and director Howard W. Koch and television star Telly Savalas owned him. Almost every time the multiple graded stakes-winning colt ran, Savalas would bring out a host of friends. If they won, Savalas would pull out a Tootsie Pop and shout, “Who loves ya, baby?” the signature catchphrase from his popular TV series “Kojak.” “People used to come up to me and tell me what a great colt I had in Telly’s Pop,” Stute recalled a few years ago. “Sure, I’d agree, but my answer always was that I had a better one in the barn—and I meant it too.” Tat “better one” was Double Discount, bred and owned by the Schifer

family of Ken and Bay Schifer. Double Discount set a world record of 1:572⁄5 for 11⁄4 miles in the 1977 Carleton F. Burke Handicap (G2T) during the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita. Ten came Snow Chief. Carl Grinstead bred Snow Chief in the name of Blue Diamond Ranch, and he campaigned the colt with Ben Rochelle. At 2 in 1985, Snow Chief’s victories included the Norfolk Stakes (G1) and Hollywood Futurity (G1), and he was voted Cal-bred Horse of the Year for the frst of three consecutive years. Snow Chief’s 1986 record earned him an Eclipse Award as the champion 3-yearold male. He captured six stakes, including the Preakness Stakes (G1), Santa Anita Derby (G1), and Florida Derby (G1). Snow Chief ultimately retired with earnings of $3,383,210, at the time a record for a Cal-bred. Stute excelled with modestly priced horses. He won the 1987 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) with Very Subtle, a flly who cost only $30,000. Stute also trained Eclipse Award winner Brave Raj, winner of the 1986 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). Born in 1927 in Fort Wayne, Ind., Stute grew up with his older brother, Warren, who died in 2007 after his own outstanding training career. Mel’s other top runners include Cal-bred grade 1 winners Right Con and Kool Arrival. Inducted into the California Toroughbred Breeders Association Hall of Fame in 2008, Stute trained through 2011. He is survived by his wife, Annabelle; son Gary; daughters Jana DiGrande and Gail Pinkner; and six grandchildren. Te family requests that donations be made to the California Toroughbred Horsemen’s Foundation. –Tracy Gantz

When Santa Anita opens its fall meeting Sept. 19, one of the stakes opening day will be named for the late Sherwood Chillingworth, who died last October at age 93. Chillingworth was the longtime executive vice president of the Oak Tree Racing Association, which for years operated a fall meeting at Santa Anita. Te $100,000 L. A. Woman Stakes (G3) for older fllies and mares at 61⁄2 furlongs has been renamed the Chillingworth Stakes. “Chilly was one of the sport’s true gentleChillingsworth men,” said Aidan Butler, executive director of California racing operations for Te Stronach Group, which owns Santa Anita. “He was fully of life and loved racing. He actually lived here at Santa Anita and was such a part of this place that it is only appropriate for us to honor him with the Chillingworth Stakes.” Before it was the L. A. Woman, the race had been named the Louis R. Rowan, named for the breeder of California-bred Quicken Tree, a former president of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association, and a founder of Oak Tree and the California Toroughbred Foundation. Several Cal-breds have won the race, including in recent years Skye Diamonds in 2018, Top Kisser in 2014, and Teddy’s Promise in 2013.

California Connections at Keeneland Sale Eight yearlings foaled in California have been cataloged for this year’s Keeneland September yearling sale. Te four colts and four fllies are by Square Eddie, Tiznow, Air Force Blue, Creative Cause, Frosted, Lemon Drop Kid, Practical Joke, and Shaman Ghost. Kingswood Farm as agent has the Square Eddie flly, a daughter of the French Deputy mare Truly Blessed. Te yearling, who is registered for California-bred owners’ premiums, is a half sister to Cal-bred Notional, winner of the 2007 San Rafael Stakes (G2) and Risen Star Stakes (G3). Notional earned $733,240. Columbiana Farm as agent has consigned the Tiznow colt, a son of the winning Gotham City mare Democratic Sweep and also registered for Cal-bred owners’ premiums. Te second dam is multiple stakes winner Jetinwith Kennedy, a California Broodmare of the Year. Jetinwith Kennedy produced Cal-bred stakes winners Jet West, Jetinto Houston, Jetin Excess, and Triumphant Flight.

Memoriam

Patricia Pope Patricia (Patsy) Pope, who with her late husband, George, owned the famed California farm El Peco Ranch in Madera, died on Aug. 4 at age 93. The Popes bred and raced top California-breds for many years, including champions Decidedly, winner of the 1962 Kentucky Derby, and Hill Rise. They also raced champion sprinter J. O. Tobin and multiple English classic winner Mysterious. Decidedly was a 1959 homebred son of Determine—Gloire Fille, by War Glory. He became the third Cal-bred to win the Kentucky Derby, following Morvich in 1922 and Swaps in 1955. No Cal-bred would win the race again until California Chrome in 2014. Decidedly also won the 1963 Dominion Day Handicap, Ben Ali Handicap, and Monmouth Handicap and was named that year’s champion older horse in Canada. Hill Rise was a 1961 homebred son of Hillary—Red Curtain, by Russia II. He earned $653,177 and won such races as the 1964 Santa Anita Derby, 1965 Santa Anita Handicap, and the 1966 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, the latter at Ascot in England. Hill Rise was named champion miler in England. Patsy Pope was born in Reno, Nev., and as a cattleman’s daughter grew up riding horses. She attended the University of Oregon and married George Pope in 1959. A patron of the arts and sciences, she loved to garden and planted hundreds of rose bushes, often bringing bouquets of fowers to friends and family. John Harris of Harris Farms knew her for many years and noted that she had a “vibrant and charming personality.” She is survived by her children, Robert Page Coleman, William Tell Coleman, Adreianna Pope Sullivan, and Patricia Moffat Pope Jr., and a sister, Adrienne Moffat Provo. She had four stepchildren with George Pope and a total of 22 grandchildren.

EQUINE MEDIRECORD BEING IMPLEMENTED A California Horse Racing Board rule that requires trainers to maintain medication treatment records for horses in their care has prompted the implementation of Equine MediRecord (EMR) in California. The Thoroughbred Owners of California board has unanimously agreed to support the EMR system, which is scheduled to be operational in the next few weeks. The EMR system, which is currently available in Europe and Kentucky, tracks horses’ medical records in an online database. It complies with all CHRB requirements. The TOC has negotiated special TOC member discounts for the EMR system. TOC members will have access to the system for their horses for free until the end of 2020, at a 50% discount in 2021, and at a 10% discount in 2022 and beyond. The record-keeping system provides a paper trail that protects the trainer, their horses, and owners. Information can be entered on any Internet device, and the system automatically calculates such things as when the next required vaccination is due and sends a series of reminders to customers.

NewsBits TURF PARADISE CANCELS MEET Management at Turf Paradise in Arizona announced that the track’s 2020-21 entire meeting would be canceled due to challenges related to COVID-19. The track had earlier been scheduled to run a shortened season. Turf Paradise usually races from the fall through early May. Purse money for the 2020-21 meet will be moved to the next meet, Vincent Francia, Turf Paradise’s general manager, told the Arizona Racing Commission in withdrawing the track’s request for dates. The track ended its 2019-20 meet early, in mid-March. Some local horsemen disputed the reason for the closure, citing a dispute between the track and horsemen over simulcasting and the running of Arizona Downs. Arizona stables may relocate to other circuits, which could include those in California.

Santa Anita Park is adding a new turf course chute, which will allow for a wider array of turf sprints than has been available. The new chute will run parallel to the seven-furlong main track chute, cross the dirt oval, and join up with the turf oval at approximately the fve-furlong pole. Track consultant Dennis Moore is directing construction of the chute, which is scheduled to be available for use beginning opening day of Santa Anita’s traditional winter-spring meeting Dec. 26. The turf chute will be 80 feet wide and approximately 800 feet long. It will accommodate sprint races at distances of fve, 51⁄2, six, and 61⁄2 furlongs while Santa Anita’s traditional downhill turf course will continue to be available to horses running distances of 11⁄4 miles and up. “Turf racing has always been popular, and it’s even more so now,” said Santa Anita’s Aidan Butler, who serves as executive director of California racing operations for The Stronach Group. “This new turf chute gives our racing offce a great deal more programmability. By that I mean that we’ll have signifcantly more options and the turf will now be more available to horses of various classifcations. “Safety is, of course, our absolute top priority, and that’s one of the most exciting aspects of this project. We’re confdent this is going to be well received by everyone, including our fans, who’ve grown to love the spectacle of watching horses run over the Santa Anita turf. There’s nothing like it in North American racing.” It is expected that these new turf sprints will provide players with consistently large felds and enticing gambling opportunities while enabling Moore’s maintenance crews to maintain the condition of the turf better. “With a longer, truer run into the far turn, horses tend to sort themselves out, and you don’t have so much wear and tear on the course as you do with a shorter run,” said Moore. “We got to work on this project on Aug. 17, and it’s going very well. We’re going to have a very smooth transition for horses running six and 61⁄2 furlongs when they cross the main track. First of all, it’s early in the race and they’ll be running in a straight line. We’re in the process of bringing in enough fll (dirt) to elevate the chute and get it pretty much on the same level as the main-track crossing.”

THIS MONTH IN

HISTORY 10 YEARS AGO California-bred UNZIP ME had an outstanding 2010 that resulted in a year-end title as champion California-bred older female. At Santa Anita that Sept. 30, she turned in a sparkling performance to win the $100,000 Senator Ken Maddy Handicap (G3T). Sent away the 7-10 favorite under jockey Rafael Bejarano, Unzip Me led at every call in the six-furlong turf event. Waveline moved up to try to challenge, but Unzip Me thwarted that effort and won by 11⁄2 lengths in 1:08.50. Marty Jones trained Unzip Me for her breeders, John Harris’ Harris Farms Inc. and Donald Valpredo, and Per Antonsen. The trainer also had a small interest in her. Harris and Valpredo bred the daughter of City Zip from a family they have nurtured for decades. Unzip Me’s dam, the Arazi mare Escape With Me, descends from Soviet Problem, Harris and Valpredo’s homebred Cal-bred Horse of the Year of 1994.

25 YEARS AGO In the span of six weeks in 1995, California-bred ONCEINABLUEMAMOON became a double graded stakes winner. The 4-year-old flly began the feat at Bay Meadows by capturing the $100,000 Hillsborough Handicap (G3T) Sept. 2 and completed it at Santa Anita in the $132,650 Las Palmas Handicap (G2T) Oct. 15. Russell Baze piloted her in the Hillsborough at 11⁄16 miles on the turf. She sat in second early and scored by 11⁄2 lengths in 1:42.14. Brice Blanc took over for the Las Palmas. This time she raced in third for most of the 11⁄8 miles on turf, winning by three lengths in 1:50.34. Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg trained Onceinabluemamoon for owner Louis Roussel III. Dale and Morley Engelson and Robert Frankel bred the daughter of Al Mamoon—Little Password, by Verbatim.

50 YEARS AGO Each summer Del Mar runs the Generous Portion Stakes as part of the Golden State Stakes series. The race is named for a California-bred flly who raced 50 years ago. GENEROUS PORTION won her frst stakes at Del Mar, triumphing in the Del Mar Debutante Sept. 5, 1970. Jockey Denis Tierney piloted her for trainer Frank Miquelez. She raced for Mr. and Mrs. Ellwood B. Johnston, who bred the 2-year-old daughter of California Kid—Piece of Pie, by The Pie King, in the name of their Old English Rancho. The Johnstons also bred two others in the feld, Balcony’s Babe and June Darling. Unhurried early in the six-furlong Debutante, Generous Portion rallied on the rail in the turn to gain a clear advantage at the eighth pole. June Darling came on but couldn’t catch Generous Portion, who scored by 21⁄2 lengths in 1:09 3⁄5.

■ California Chrome’s First North American Winner A month after getting his frst winner, in Russia, California-bred superstar California Chrome was represented by his frst winner in North America. Louisiana-bred Cilla, making her second start, won a six-furlong maiden special weight event at Delaware Park Aug. 13 by 71⁄4 lengths on a sloppy, sealed track. P. Dale Ladner and Brett Brinkman bred Cilla from the graded stakes-placed Into Mischief mare Sittin At the Bar. Brinkman trains the 2-year-old flly for Ladner. The two men raced the mare, a $30,000 purchase by Ladner at the 2011 Breeders Sales Company of Louisiana yearling sale from the Pauls Mill Bloodstock consignment. California Chrome, bred by Perry Martin and Steve Coburn, is a son of Lucky Pulpit—Love the Chase, by Not For Love. He won 16 of 27 races, including the frst two-thirds of the Triple Crown and the 2016 Dubai World Cup (G1), for earnings of $14,752,650. California Chrome, whose frst foals are 2-year-olds, retired to Taylor Made Stallions in Kentucky for the 2017 season. He has shuttled to Chile and now stands in Japan.

Northern Yearling and Horses of Racing Age Sale

THIRSTY FOR YEARLINGS CTBA NORCAL SALE FIGS SEE ACROSSTHE-BOARD RISE

S

Tose numbers, bolstered by strength in the rest of the top 10, nine of them by California sires, helped send sale fgures soaring. Te yearling average rose by 41.8%, to $8,142, over last year, and 2019’s fgure was a 24% increase from the year before. A total of 69 yearlings grossed $561,800. Te median of $3,000 represented an increase of 11.1%. A total of 74 horses sold for $575,600, with 27 not sold for a buy-back rate of 26.7%. Last year’s buy-back rate was 34%. Te fgures were especially gratifying considering the challenges of this year’s COVID-19 pandemic. “We were extremely pleased with the overall results of the sale,” said Doug Burge, president of the CTBA. “We didn’t know what to expect, especially under the circumstances, but there was signifcant interest and support from owners and trainers. Te emphasis on added Cal-bred opportunities in Northern California has created a newfound demand that we can continue to build on.” John Harris, whose Harris Farms is annually a major consignor to the Northern California sale, was also “pleasantly surprised” with the sale’s results. “Te yearlings I saw all looked well prepared and prospects that can go on 16

tay Tirsty’s frst California-bred foals attracted quite a bit of attention at the California Toroughbred Breeders Association Northern California sale of yearlings and horses of racing age, held Aug. 11 in Pleasanton. Tree by the stallion brought the top three prices, headed by a $50,000 colt.

to make money for their buyers,” Harris said. “Te average was up and buy-backs were down. It’s an important venue for California breeders, and it’s nice to see a good outcome.” Terry Lovingier’s Lovacres Ranch sold all three of the Stay Tirsty yearling colts that brought the top three prices, and Lovingier bred them. Lovingier serves as chairperson of the CTBA. He agreed with Harris that two of the most important indications of the sale’s strengths were the increase in average and the decrease in buy-back. “It went really smoothly, and the people who turned out were buyers,” said Lovingier. “I do think that because Golden Gate is doing such a good job, the people were willing to buy horses and run them here.

“Te really encouraging news is that most of those horses are staying in California. We need the horses here, and I think that’s the biggest takeaway.” For his own sale Lovingier was pleased with the reception for yearlings by Stay Tirsty. Winner of the 2011 Travers Stakes (G1) and an earner of $1,936,000, Stay Tirsty moved to Lovacres for the 2018 breeding season after standing several seasons in Kentucky. His foals already include grade 1 winner Mind Control. “Stay Tirsty throws a really nice-looking horse,” said Lovingier. “He’s doing well all over the nation. His foals have a big engine in their hind end. Tey’ve got nice gaskin muscles, big shoulders. Tey’re long-bodied horses, and they stay healthy. Tey continue running.”

Te sale-topper, cataloged as hip #25, sold for $50,000 to Craig Warren. Te son of Stay Tirsty is out of the unraced Forest Wildcat mare Clawpuccino. It is the family of multiple grade 1 winner and $4,563,500-earner Behrens. “Tat colt is an absolutely gorgeous colt,” said Lovingier. “Every baby out of that mare runs.” Clawpuccino has had four winners in four starters. Warren has participated in that family before, and her ability to throw runners as well as Stay Tirsty as the sire made the colt very attractive. Robert Jones purchased a son of Stay Tirsty for $47,000, the second-highest price of the sale. Te colt, hip #94, is out of the winning Speightstown mare Reign, a half sister to Cal-bred Love a Honeybadger, winner of the 2018 California Distaf Handicap. Lovingier purchased the mare for $24,000 at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky February mixed sale. “He’s a chestnut and is fashy,” said Lovingier. “He’s got that faxen mane on him. He looks like something Randolph Scott would ride in on in a Western. He comes from a very good family.” Linda Templeton, whose homebred Governor Goteven won the Aug. 1 California Toroughbred Breeders’ Association Stakes at Del Mar, bought a son of Stay Tirsty for $40,000 in the name of her Templeton Horses. Te colt, hip #82, is out of Pebble Beach Baby, a daughter of Rock Hard Ten who won seven races and earned $218,166. She loved him.” Tamarando, whose frst foals are 2-year-olds, sired a $37,000 yearling colt, hip #12. Champion Cal-bred 2-yearold male of 2013, Tamarando stands at Harris Farms. Te yearling sold out

of the Harris consignment. Trainer Jef Bonde bought the Tamarando colt, who is out of the stakes-winning Talkin Man mare Aspen Gal. Te mare has produced Club Aspen, winner of the 2019 King Glorious Stakes and twice stakes-placed this year. Club Aspen is by Clubhouse Ride, the sire of another Harris yearling in the top 10 at the sale. Steve Moger purchased hip #71 for $20,000. Te colt is out of the stakes-placed Desert Code mare Moving Desert. “I liked all the horses I sold,” said Harris. “But to sustain a large foal crop like Harris Farms raises each year, it’s good to sell some and hope we are further rewarded down the line via the California breeders award program. Governor Goteven takes the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Stakes at Del Mar

inda Templeton once owned the acreage that is now Terry Lovingier’s Lovacres Farm in Warner Springs. So she fnds it especially gratifying that she bred Governor Goteven by supporting Lovacres stallions. Tat flly has developed into a major California-bred 2-year-old flly by capturing the $98,000 California Tor-

oughbred Breeders’ Association Stakes Aug. 1 and $100,000 Generous Portion Stakes Aug. 30, both at Del Mar. “Tere’s a connection with all of us,” Templeton said. Tat connection includes Walther Solis, whose long training career included many seasons as Lovingier’s conditioner. Solis trained Governor Goteven’s frst two dams, Time Linda Goteven and Linda’s Bluf. “I bought her grandmother in Ken-

tucky,” said Templeton. “She ran okay the frst little bit. Ten she got hurt and we bred her.” Linda’s Bluf, a daughter of Pollard’s Vision—Pine Forest, by Pine Bluf, cost just $1,700 at the 2008 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale. Te flly started twice without winning before the injury. In breeding Linda’s Bluf, Templeton logically chose a stallion standing at Lovacres. Time to Get Even, when bred to Linda’s Bluf, sired Time Linda Goteven. Tat flly also had an abbreviated racing career, but she is making up for that as a broodmare. Governor Goteven, by Lovacres stallion Govenor Charlie, is undefeated in three starts for Templeton and trainer Lisa Bernard. Like many other owners, though, Templeton was initially unable to watch Governor Goteven compete because of COVID-19 restrictions. Te flly debuted

at Santa Anita May 29, winning a maiden California-bred race by a neck at 18-1. Fortunately, owners were frst allowed at Del Mar to watch their horses compete the weekend of the CTBA Stakes. “I’m so thankful,” said Templeton. “It just feels so funny without people.” Under the protocols established by Del Mar and the local county health department, the day of the CTBA Stakes, two licensed owners per horse could attend and sit in the box seats. Fans were still not al-

by 31⁄2 lengths in 1:05.55. Bernard had never before trained a horse to compete at Del Mar. “I feel fantastic; it’s very wonderful,” Bernard said. “She has been a really fun 2-year-old to deal with, and I knew she was training really well.” While Templeton now splits her time between Southern California and Arizona, she lived near Del Mar for many years. Her late husband, Robert, was a grading contractor and worked on the houses on

lowed, however, and only about 100 people occupied the cavernous grandstand. Winner’s circle ceremonies were still banned, so Templeton had to celebrate in the box. She sat with Solis, and Lovingier immediately came up and congratulated her. Governor Goteven faced four other fllies in the 51⁄2-furlong CTBA. Big Andy, technically still a maiden because of a disqualifcation from frst in her frst start followed by a second-place fnish, went of as the 6-5 favorite. Governor Goteven was the 3-1 second choice. When the gate opened, Governor Goteven, ridden by Tiago Pereira, battled with Reign of Fire for the lead. “My flly was game, though, and she was willing to go with her,” said Pereira. “We put the other flly away and just went on with it.” Governor Goteven began pulling away at the eighth pole. Big Andy closed ground and passed Reign of Fire, but she couldn’t catch Governor Goteven, who triumphed

the hill opposite Del Mar racetrack. “We used to sit up on that hill when they were building those houses and watch the Fourth of July freworks up there,” she said. GENEROUS PORTION STAKES

Only second-place Big Andy returned from the CTBA Stakes to challenge Governor Goteven in the Generous Portion, slated at six furlongs, an eighth of a mile farther than the CTBA. Four other fllies joined those two: Los Alamitos maiden winner I’m So Anna, Golden Gate Fields maiden winners Emma’s Dance and Do You Hear Tat, and Del Mar maiden winner Mucha Woman. I’m So Anna had defeated a feld of 10, scoring by four lengths. Terefore, bettors sent her of as the 11-10 favorite in the Generous Portion over Governor Goteven at 2-1. Bernard gave Governor Goteven two works at Del Mar between the CTBA and the Generous Portion, and the young flly

thrived on the training regimen. “She knows her job, knows what she needs to do,” Bernard said a few days before the race. “It has clicked in for her, and you can tell she knows she won and she’s proud of herself. Fillies are like that; they take things to heart.” Another change during the interim was that Templeton went from a one-horse stable to two. She has been partners with Lovingier on many horses through the years, but was down to just Governor Goteven. She looked at Lovingier’s yearlings at the farm and selected a son of Stay Tirsty—Pebble Beach Baby, by Rock Hard Ten, buying him for $40,000 at the Aug. 11 California Toroughbred Breeders Association Stakes Northern California yearling sale. Governor Goteven paid for the new acquisition in the Generous Portion, earning $57,000 for the victory. With Pereira again aboard, she vied with Emma’s Dance early, but had plenty left to keep I’m So Anna from closing past second. Governor Goteven defeated I’m So Anna by 41⁄2 lengths in 1:12.21. Big Andy fnished another halflength back in third. “I’ve always felt she needs to go longer,” Bernard said. “She’s a big flly who needs to get her feet under her and get in her best stride.” Bernard has ridden since she was 10, and she also retrains retirees for second careers. She trains fve at San Luis Rey Downs and was thrilled to be two stakes for two starts at Del Mar. “It defnitely is a dream come true,” said the trainer. “Tere are no words to describe it.”

On May 17, Love Wins won an open maiden special weight by 3 3⁄4 lengths at Santa Anita. On May 22, Positivity broke his maiden there by 31⁄4 lengths. Reign of Fire got it done June 13 at 11-1, then ran third in the $98,000 California Toroughbred Breeders’ Association Stakes at Del Mar Aug. 1. Te next day Positivity stepped up to the plate by taking the $100,500 Graduation Stakes by a half-length. Te Cal-bred son of Paynter won the 51⁄2-furlong sprint under Drayden Van Dyke for trainer Luis Mendez, despite being bumped twice and having fve lengths to make up in the lane. Te 5-1 shot ultimately fought of rivals, outlasting Good With People and Scooby to the wire. Te fnal time was 1:05.49 on the Del Mar dirt track. “We’ve had a pretty good year,” Calvert said, citing a trip to Saudi Arabia with Legends of War in February as the kick-of point to a big season. “We won three of the frst four maiden races (for juveniles) this year. I love Paynter, and if I can get a Cal-bred Paynter? Tat’s pretty nice.” Agent John Brocklebank bought Positivity for Calvert for $20,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Santa Anita fall yearling sale in 2019. Te bay colt was bred by Allen Farm out of the City Zip mare Sam’s Sunny City, who has three winners from her frst three starters. Positivity is her frst stakes winner. Second dam Sam’s Sunny Halo, by Prospector’s Halo, won 16 of 81 starts and earned $407,204. Golden State Series—Solana Beach Stakes

LOVING DEL MAR TURF’S UP FOR PULPIT RIDER IN DEL MAR’S SOLANA

I

t’s not surprising that California-bred Pulpit Rider loves Del Mar. Te seaside track ofers plenty of opportunity over the turf course, and Pulpit Rider, winner of the $122,500 Solana Beach Stakes Aug. 15, gets her afnity for that surface from both sides of her pedigree. Larry and Marianne Williams have shepherded multiple generations of Pulpit Rider’s bloodlines. Tey not only bred and race the 5-year-old mare but also bred and raced her sire, Lucky Pulpit, and her dam, Lady Railrider. Lucky Pulpit placed in numerous stakes, and his sole stakes victory came on the turf at Arlington Park in the 2005 Smile Stakes. He became one of California’s leading sires, and while he will always be known as the sire of California Chrome, he still ranks high on the list of leading California turf sires three years after his death. Lady Railrider won four stakes on all-weather tracks, often an indication of turf ability, and her nine stakes-placings included turf performances. She ultimately earned $603,041. Mike Puype has trained Pulpit Rider throughout her career. She has now won stakes at Santa Anita, Golden Gate Fields, and Del Mar.

Larry and Marianne Williams’ homebred Pulpit Rider, blinkers, hangs loose to win the Solana Beach Stakes by a nose at Del Mar

“She always runs her best here at Del Mar,” said Puype. Bettors apparently didn’t agree because they made Pulpit Rider the longest shot in the fve-horse Solana Beach feld at 111. She faced 1-2 favorite Mucho Unusual, winner of Del Mar’s San Clemente Stakes (G2T) in 2019; Cordiality, the 2018 Solana Beach winner; stakes winner Kitty Boom Boom; and stakes-placed Sedamar. Pulpit Rider came away from the gate in last for the one-mile Solana Beach, but jockey Juan Hernandez did not panic. “She broke a little slow, so I didn’t rush with her,” he said. “She was nice and relaxed, so I felt OK.” Kitty Boom Boom opened up a threelength lead, with the other three in between. “I waited until the quarter pole, and then I asked her,” said Hernandez. “She gave me a good kick.” Into the stretch the other four raced together as a team, but Pulpit Rider geared up to pass them all. It took her until the fnal moments, yet she prevailed by a nose over Sedamar, with Mucho Unusual

third. Pulpit Rider completed the mile in 1:34.46. “Close, but we got it,” said Hernandez. Puype praised Hernandez’s ride. “She kind of likes to ease out and get in the middle of the track in her races,” the trainer said. “Hats of to her for digging for it, and hats of to Juan for a great ride.” Puype was winning his second edition of the Solana Beach. He earlier saddled Chati’s On Top to win in 2015. Pulpit Rider isn’t the frst foal by Pulpit and from Lady Railrider to do well. Te mare’s frst foal, Halo Darlin, by Pulpit, earned $186,545. In between those two, Lady Railrider produced stakes-placed Fiery Lady, a daughter of Unusual Heat and an earner of $218,602. Sacred Rider, from Lucky Pulpit’s last full crop and out of Lady Railrider, is a 3-year-old gelding. He has already placed in three stakes, most recently fnishing second in the Robert Dupret Derby at Golden Gate on the turf. Lady Railrider has a yearling flly by Rousing Sermon and has been bred this year to Tamarando.

Golden State Series—Real Good Deal Stakes

LUCK TURNS AROUND A

BY TRACY GANTZ

fter a championship 2-yearold season last year, California-bred El Tigre Terrible had a run of bad luck in 2020. He turned it around in his second start of the season at Del Mar, however, with an impressive performance in the $125,500 Real Good Deal Stakes July 31. Te win in the Real Good Deal on the dirt gave El Tigre Terrible stakes victories on both dirt and turf. Peter Miller trains him for Nick Cosato’s Slam Dunk Racing and Michael Nentwig. “Te luxury of having him is I think he’ll run on either surface,” said Cosato. “And I don’t know if he’s even limited just to sprinting.” In 2019 El Tigre Terrible won three of fve races, including the $101,755 Speakeasy Stakes against open company on the turf at Santa Anita. He tied with Phantom Boss in the voting for Cal-bred champion 2-year-old male. Te gelding had a small setback, and so his connections gave him time of after the Speakeasy. He returned June 6 at Santa Anita in the $85,875 Desert Code Stakes, the frst of two races in which he encountered considerable trafc. “It was very frustrating,” said Miller. “He’s had two very bad trips.”

El Tigre Terrible, with Flavien Prat aboard, after winning the Real Good Deal Stakes by 43⁄4 lengths over Del Mar’s main track

In the Desert Code on the turf, El Tigre Terrible found himself stuck behind horses. He didn’t get clear until deep in the stretch, and then he came fying to fnish second to She’s So Special, with Phantom Boss in the beaten feld. Tings got even worse in the $103,500 Runhappy Oceanside Stakes on turf against open company at Del Mar July 10. Bumped right after the start, El Tigre Terrible was in close quarters throughout most of the onemile race. A hole closed on him in the stretch, and he and jockey Flavien Prat fnished unplaced. “He had nowhere to run in the Oceanside, and Flavien just kind of sat on him,” said Cosato. “It was kind of a blessing in disguise because in the Oceanside, had he had room to run and really exerted himself, we in all likelihood wouldn’t have wheeled him back in the Real Good Deal.” For the seven-furlong Real Good Deal, El Tigre Terrible faced six rivals. With Prat again aboard, he went of as the 11-10 favorite. El Tigre Terrible broke ffth, and Miller became concerned when trafc trouble

again appeared to loom on the turn. “He had a horse to his outside, and it looked like he was running up on heels again,” said Miller. “But Flavien knew what he was doing, and he was the best horse.” Once El Tigre Terrible got clear, he stormed to the front and drew of to score by 43⁄4 lengths in 1:24.28. Rookie Mistake fnished second, with Lightning Fast third and Phantom Boss fourth. “I was a little bit worried,” said Cosato. “We were all kind of saying, ‘not again,’ but then Flavien tipped him out and he was able to outrun his opponents.” Martin Bach bred El Tigre Terrible, a son of Smiling Tiger—King City Kitty, by Gotham City. Slam Dunk purchased him as a yearling for $18,000 from the Woodbridge Farm consignment at the 2018 Barretts fall sale. “We got three pretty good horses at that sale,” said Cosato, who also purchased Cal-bred winners Utalknboutpractice for $57,000 and Drippin Sauce for $3,700. With the Real Good Deal, El Tigre Terrible brought his record to four wins, one second, and one third in eight starts for earnings of $210,510.

p until the $101,500 Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G3) at Del Mar Aug. 21, California-bred Sneaking Out hadn’t won twice at a racetrack. Don’t hold that against her, however, because all fve of her previous victories have come at different tracks, from up and down California to as far away as Arkansas.

Sneaking Out’s versatility has allowed her to break her maiden at Del Mar, add an allowance optional claiming win at Golden Gate Fields, and become a stakes winner in the 2019 Evening Jewel Stakes at Santa Anita. Earlier this year she won an allowance race at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas and then completed her collection of major California tracks

at Los Alamitos, stepping up to a graded win in the Great Lady M. Stakes (G2). And when she wasn’t doubling up at a track, Sneaking Out was often fnishing second. Going into the Rancho Bernardo, she had fve wins and four seconds in 11 starts, racing for her breeders, Kevin and Kim Nish’s KMN Racing. Sneaking Out actually fnished frst once more, in the 2019 Angels Flight Stakes, but she was disqualifed and placed second. Kim Nish ascribes that to her determination. “She made a beeline for that other horse and bumped her hard,” Kim said. For most of Sneaking Out’s career, Jerry Hollendorfer has trained her. It is a partnership with the Nishes that has included Eclipse Award champion Shared Belief, trained by Hollendorfer and owned by the partnership of Jim and Janet Rome’s

Jungle Racing, the Nishes, Hollendorfer, Jason Litt, Alex Solis II, and George Todaro. Jockey Umberto Rispoli joined the Sneaking Out team for the Rancho Bernardo. “Tis is my frst time on her,” Rispoli said. “We can’t work horses here, so we have to watch a lot of videos. I like what I saw.” Eight older fllies and mares lined up for the 61⁄2-furlong Rancho Bernardo. One of the few graded handicaps, the Rancho Bernardo required Sneaking Out to carry top weight of 123 pounds, conceding from three to fve pounds to her rivals. Tat was four more than the 119 she had carried in the Great Lady M. Despite the pickup in weight, Sneaking Out went of as the 9-5 favorite. She broke out of the gate on top, but Artistic Diva and Mother of Dragons took over and vied for the lead. Amuse ranged up, and the four of them battled into the turn. Artistic Diva and Mother of Dragons left the fght to Sneaking Out and Amuse around the turn. By the stretch, however, Sneaking Out asserted her superiority, eventually drawing out to win by 33⁄4 lengths in 1:15.57 over Amuse. Gingham closed from last to fnish third. “I think she was even better today, and my rider told me he was very impressed with her,” said Hollendorfer. “She’s getting good right now. She wins a grade 2 and then puts weight on and still wins.” Sneaking Out, a 4-year-old daughter of Indian Evening—Maddie’s Odyssey, by Kitten’s Joy, was foaled at Ellen Jackson’s Victory Rose Toroughbreds near Vacaville. Te Nishes, with the help of Solis and Litt, purchased Maddie’s Odyssey in foal to Drosselmeyer for $14,500 at the 2012 Keeneland November sale. Maddie’s Odyssey has also produced multiple stakes winners Grecian Fire (by Unusual Heat) and Been Studying Her (by Fast Anna). Her 2-year-old full sister to Sneaking Out is named Starlight Stroll and by mid-August was breezing three furlongs at Los Alamitos. Te mare has a 2019 colt by Straight Fire and a 2020 flly by Tapit. She has been bred back to Constitution.

bet against that baby eventually doing something special as well. “It’s such a great story,” said Frank Taylor, one of the principals in Taylor Made Farm. “Here’s a Cal-bred mare that was unwanted as a yearling, and Jim keeps her and she wins a million and a grade 1. Most people would bail out and sell her and take the money all at once, but he stuck with her and kept breeding her, and she’s been a great broodmare. It’s unbelievable how she’s produced. She has good foals; they’re smart, they’re correct. She’s one of my favorite all-time mares. She’s something special.” Coincidentally, Taylor Made is home to another Cal-bred mare who has distinguished herself as a broodmare. Unraced Mo Chuisle, by Free House, is the dam of Points Ofthebench, who took the 2013 Bing Crosby Stakes and Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes (both G1), as well as his full brother (both by Benchmark) Bench Points, 28

winner of the 2011 Lazaro Barrera Memorial Stakes (G3). Points Ofthebench was the national champion sprinter of 2013 and that season’s Cal-bred Horse of the Year. “I’ve got two Cal-bred gray mares here on the farm, both grade 1 producers,” said Taylor. “What are the chances of that?” Asked if he’s thought about keeping a daughter out of Dream of Summer, Weigel answered in the afrmative. But having a foal-sharing partner makes that a complicated proposition, particularly when the yearlings are selling so well. Weigel and his partners have sold more several million dollars worth of yearlings out of the mare. “If I get a flly that doesn’t look like she’s going to bring a whole helluva a lot, I’d like to keep her,” Weigel said. “But so far, that hasn’t happened.” Weigel still keeps a few mares at Here Tis Ranch, which is now run by Marianne Millard’s nephew, Steve Gale.

One is Marry By Summer, a full sister to Dream of Summer who has gotten four winners from fve starters. Another is the Tribal Rule mare Tribal Gem, who has two winners from three starters. Both are currently in foal to Tom’s Tribute. But there is only one Dream of Summer, who tends to stamp her foals, eight of 13 also gray. Weigel has had the thrill of watching Creative Cause and Destin compete in the Kentucky Derby and Vexatious try the Kentucky Oaks (G1). (“I thought she was going to win the

Tere is an emotional attachment I have to her. For years I’ve gone out to Kentucky twice a year to give her a kiss on the nose and rub her neck and hug her. You can’t put a price tag on that. “For a guy like me, a little owner/ breeder, this is something you can try an entire lifetime for and never get—a grade 1 winner who’s gotten two grade 1 winners and a grade 2 winner. It’s a tough, tough business, but when you get one like Dream of Summer, it can be life-changing. Tis mare changed Jim’s life both fnancially and with all the excitement. She’s 21 and carrying a foal, and I told Jim I’d have to get her a beer now because she’s legal to drink.

While others in his party were feeding her carrots, Weigel tried to kiss and hug her as he does her mother. “She wasn’t too impressed with me,” said Weigel. “She was more interested in the carrots.” Tey can’t all be Dream of Summer.

Aislinn Finn BY EMILY SHIELDS

She was teaching lessons and working as an assistant trainer at an eventing show barn. Te daily grind was losing its appeal until Finn decided to go in a completely diferent direction. “I started breaking babies for Faith Taylor at her ranch,” Finn said. “And I really wanted to get on them at the track.” Finn followed the youngsters to the races, hot-walking to learn the routine. “When I started getting on them, I knew this was the best job in the world,” she said. Te frst time Finn breezed a horse, she felt adrenaline, passion, and excitement all at once. “Even when I was eventing, my favorite parts were the gallop stretches,” she said. “Te frst time I worked a horse at Golden Gate Fields, I came back to the barn and said, ‘I didn’t know horses could go that fast!’ At that point I was hooked. It doesn’t matter how bad a day you are having; it is still the best feeling in the world. It never gets old.” Finn jokes that up-and-coming trainer Quinn Howey “poached” her from Taylor’s operation in 2019, but the move has been a blessing for Finn. Te 25-year-old spent the summer caring for Howey’s string at Del Mar, getting on each horse and managing the grooms. Tis has given her the chance to grow close to Howey’s stakes-winning California-bred Indian Peak. Te 3-year-old son of Comic Strip—Ms. Booty, by Roar, fnished third in the $102,700 El Camino Real Derby in February, and then won the $151,000 Snow Chief Stakes at Santa Anita in June. “I’ve known him since he very frst came in as a 2-year-old,” Finn said. “He was always this big, gangly, goofy horse that took a very long time to mentally and physically grow into himself. But he became more talented and more confdent, and he has that classy attitude. He stands quietly on a loose rein like a pony, but when he goes to gallop, his stride is enormous. You just have to fall in love with him.”

It’s a little crazy to think that exercise rider and aspiring jockey Aislinn Finn was once burned-out on horses. But that’s what happened in 2017.

Mixing business with pleasure, Aislinn Finn puts Indian Peak through his morning paces before spending some quality time together

Howey has also helped Finn achieve her goal of becoming a jockey. Finn has ridden fve races at Grants Pass Downs, fnishing fourth in her debut on North Fork on June 23. “I was so nervous, my hands were shaking in the room,” Finn recalled. “But then I went out there and did it, and when I was coming back, I already could not wait to do it again.” Finn says her long-term goal is to be a jockey and “go as far as I can with it.” She is starting slowly, eyeing the upcoming Fresno fair meeting, where the competition isn’t as intense, and she already knows the trainers. One day she would love to ride at Del Mar, but knows that dream is still far of. She has already battled through fear; in October 2019, a horse she was on fipped in the gate and Finn broke her ankle in two places. “I was out for three months,” Finn said. “It took a while for me to be okay in the gates again, but it was worth working through.” Howey has been pleased with Finn’s tremendous progress over the last year and a half. “She was a good hand, just green when she started,” the trainer said. “But she accepts any challenge and does the best she can, which is what I really appreciate about her. She’s awesome.”

It pays to monitor broodmares to make sure they are actually still pregnant and that everything is going smoothly. It’s difcult to evaluate the pregnancy with ultrasound until about 10 to 14 days, and 14 days is considered a preferred time to do the frst evaluation. Doing an early pregnancy diagnosis is not just about fnding the embryo to know whether the mare is pregnant. It is important to pay attention to the health of that embryo and whether

it is of appropriate size for that day of pregnancy, and also to know whether there are twins. Dr. Maria Schnobrich a boarded theriogenologist at the LeBlanc Center for Reproduction at Rood & Riddle in Lexington, Ky., says the most critical ultrasounds are one or two early evaluations. “I always recommend checking the mare once and preferably twice before 17 days, to see if there are twins,” she said. “Toroughbreds as a breed have a much higher incidence of producing twins than other breeds like Quarter Horses, in some cases having an incidence of double ovulations up to 20%.” As most twins in the horse come from double ovulations (which results in two

diferent eggs released), it is important to perform these checks to prevent the unwanted outcomes associated with twin pregnancies being missed. “Additionally, because we often use drugs to make the mares ovulate, this also increases the chances of double ovulation that may result in twins,” said Schnobrich. “Te reason it’s good to do this ultrasound check at about 14 to 15 days is that if twins are identifed, it is easiest to eliminate one of them at that point in time. Tis procedure, in the hands of someone experienced with it, should be safe for the remaining embryo and will result in no more loss than if it were a singleton pregnancy.” Te next check needs to be done before 35 days of gestation.

To ensure the best possible chances for a healthy foal, a pregnant mare should have regular checkups

“Tis check is to ensure that the pregnancy is still present and that it is growing appropriately,” said Schnobrich. “After 35 days, the endometrial cups form in the uterus. Tese are structures that come from the placenta and embed into the uterine wall. “Te endometrial cups cause the mare to form CL structures that produce progesterone. If the mare loses the pregnancy at 45 days or so, those CL structures are already there, and in about 99% of cases they will keep the mare from returning to estrus and ovulating normally until about 120 days after ovulation.” In this situation, your breeding season may be lost for that mare; she will not return to normal estrus in time to breed her again that year. Tose cups do not naturally go away until about 120 days of gestation. Te mare does not ovulate again during that time, and you might assume she is still pregnant unless you do an ultrasound check. She often acts as if she is pregnant and may not tease, and there is no change in the way she looks. “Another reason to do the ultrasound at about 33 days is to see if the pregnancy is developmentally normal,” said Schnobrich. “Te mare may be pregnant, but if the structures present don’t look healthy and you can catch it before the endometrial cups form, you can eliminate the unhealthy pregnancy and start over. Tis is a little pointy structure that will be either behind the umbilicus or under the tail head. Tus we can actually tell the sex of the fetus, and about half of my clients like to know the gender. “Minimum requirement after that 60-day check would be doing one check in the fall to make sure the mare is still pregnant, and deciding if she needs to be put under lights or not.” If she is still pregnant, it’s wise to do another check in January just to make sure the pregnancy is healthy and progressing normally. “Some of my client farms have me check their mares every month during late pregnancy, starting at 150 to 200 days,” said Schnobrich. “We start measuring and evaluating the placenta for any changes. Recently, that has been very important. Tis past year we saw an increased incidence of what’s called nocardioform placentitis. Tis is generally an uncommon cause of abortion, but last year the incidence was very high in Kentucky.” Te most common cause of lateterm abortion in mares is placentitis, which is an infammation and infection of the placenta. Te most common type of placentitis is due to bacteria from the environment that ascend though the vagina and cervix and into the uterus. Signs of this ascending placentitis include early mammary development and lactation and a discharge from the vulva. Bacteria from an ascending placentitis enter the fetal fuids, infecting the foal and often causing abortion if not identifed early. Nocardioform placentitis is less common. It is caused by certain types of bacteria called actinomycetes and afects usually only the interface between the placenta and the uterine lining. Often the thick mucous lesions on the placenta are seen (with ultrasound) on the fetal membranes in the uterine body and base of the uterine horns. Te outcomes from this disease range from abortion to healthy foals, and often are related to how much of the placenta was afected. Because the infection interferes with nutritional support from the placenta, the foal is either aborted or is born undersized and underdeveloped.

sound—which is anywhere from $75 to $200—it is well worth it. You’ve come that far with the pregnancy, so you don’t want to risk losing it. In my experience, on farms where I have looked at the pregnancies every month, many of the detrimental changes do happen in the last 30 days before foaling.” If breeders have had a year in which they have noticed that a lot of the placentas are not normal, it may be worth screening the broodmare herd with ultrasound or hormone evaluations. It also pays to have someone checking/watching those mares who is astute at noticing subtle changes. Tere may be some external signs and clues that something isn’t quite right—such as a mare starting to develop an udder too soon or having a discharge from the vulva. “For the mares that do develop an udder too soon, it is a good idea to ultrasound them rather than just putting them on treatments,” said Schnobrich. “Te ultrasound may be able to tell you what is going on, and this might change the drugs that you decide to use. Sometimes the fetus is actually dead already, and by putting the mare on all these treatments without checking to make sure the foal is alive, you could put the mare at risk for laminitis or death. You need to know the health and status of the fetus. “Some breeders or veterinarians have a minimal ultrasound schedule that only includes a 16-day scan, a 42-day scan, and maybe one more. I feel that we really should be checking at the 14-day window to check for twins. Some of the additional scans are more optional, given the time of year, etc., but an ultrasound can really help you know how the pregnancy is doing. Even if the pregnancy is compromised, you’d be able to know why, and possibly administer treatment earlier another time—to make a diferent outcome the next time the mare is pregnant. “You are not going to know if you don’t look. Knowledge is power. When I give a talk to veterinarians or breeders, I outline what is normal for each stage of gestation on the ultrasound, and show images of what these look like.” COURTESY OF CLAIRE FREEMAN

COURTESY OF MARIA SCHNOBRICH

“We have seen a higher incidence of this problem recently (in late 2019-early 2020), and started evaluating some of these mares with transabdominal ultrasound to diferentiate between these two types of infection,” said Schnobrich. “Te standard of care for some equine pregnancies, just as it is in humans, is to do at least one look at the placenta in late gestation with ultrasound. We can often identify a mare that is starting to have these issues. We can see a thickening of the placenta or changes, including the fact that the fetal fuids are becoming cloudy.” Treatment at that point can be started even before signs like udder development, giving a better chance of salvaging the pregnancy and saving the foal. “Te transabdominal evaluation is important because there may be lesions you’d see in that location that are not in the area you can view transrectally,” said Schnobrich. “Nocardioform placentitis is an example of a disease that usually can only be diagnosed with a transabdominal ultrasound. I think that by catching these cases earlier, we are more likely to get a live foal where we would not have otherwise, and in some cases prevent some of the damage that would have happened. “We can’t save all of these foals. But if it is a valuable pregnancy, I encourage owners to think about implementing one more pregnancy scan in late gestation.” Afected mares can be treated with antibiotics, anti-infammatory medications, and a high dose of a progestin-like hormone. Early treatment reduces the number of abortions and may improve foal survival. In an average foaling season, a few cases of nocardioform placentitis are usually seen, but occasionally there is an upswing in cases. “A late-gestation ultrasound can identify a possible problem, and also helps as you prepare to foal the mare, to identify anything you need to be aware of,” said Schnobrich. “Is the placenta very thick, or are there other signs that this is a compromised pregnancy? You may need to send the mare to a hospital so she can be mon-

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through Aug. 30, 2020.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
