SPANNING THE GENERATIONS

T

here is nothing like breeding a winning Toroughbred. It’s at least three years in the making. You spend hours agonizing over fnding just the right mating, then sacrifce to the racing gods, hoping for a miraculous roll of the genetic dice. If you are lucky enough not to come up snake eyes, you then spend months hoping they grow well and end up in the right hands. Finally, you spend less than two minutes holding your breath while simultaneously screaming for your boy to “get up” or “hold on.” If you screamed loud enough that your horse crosses the wire frst, you have 10 minutes of feeling the genius until worrying starts again over the current crop and next year’s breeding. Despite or because of all that, I count those as some of my life’s “best of” moments — and hope my wife isn’t reading this. Breeding, though, is an underrated aspect of the horse industry, especially outside of Kentucky. In California we rely more and more on California-breds to fll cards. Sunday, July 12, at Del Mar, approximately 65% of the horses entered were Cal-breds. Given the state of the world right now — in the short run at least — the reliance on Cal-breds is not likely to decrease. Without a robust state breeding in-

dustry, there simply wouldn’t be racing in California, and the racing world would be the worse for it. A lot is done to promote breeding and owning Cal-breds. Te stallion, breeder, and owner incentive awards (including the maiden special weight bonus), Cal-bred stakes and restricted races, and the added money to open purses all provide solid economic incentive to increase the quality and quantity of breeding stock. Tere are many men and women who have devoted a lot of blood, sweat, and tears (and money) to the California breeding industry, and we all should be thankful to them for where we are today. All that said, there is a bit of an ominous feeling on the California breeding scene. I felt it frst when presenting an award at the CTBA dinner earlier this year. It was a well-attended event, but as I looked out over the audience, I noticed a sea of white hair—or, like me, no hair. It was a great evening, but youth was not served. I think my fellow board members had a similar reaction, and it was agreed that one of us should write a column or two for this magazine, reaching out to younger generations (which, given the demographics of our group, means all generations other

than ours). My hope is to learn what the CTBA can do to help the next generations either develop or continue their interest in breeding. I did pick up the phone and talk to one younger CTBA member. It was enlightening. I tend to feel inside like I’m still 30. Talking to the younger generation, I quickly learned that, while I might have been “groovy” 40 years ago, I really am not in touch with the motivations and interests of the younger generations. (I just mentally heard my three daughters go “Duh!”) So, I’m asking for help from all of you. Tose of you who are younger CTBA members, I’d like your input on how we can further your needs and interests. If you’re part of my generation, ask your younger friends and relatives what might get them interested in Toroughbreds and breeding. Email me at tygreen1823@gmail.com and I’ll try to explore some of those ideas in future columns. To paraphrase the young man I spoke with, we have tons of young people at Del Mar who leave the track with no idea of how to get involved in racing or breeding. Let’s fnd a way to tap their enthusiasm and energy and ensure a healthy breeding program for years to come.

■ California Chrome Gets First Winner

ANNE M. EBERHARDT

California-bred superstar California Chrome had his frst winner as a sire when Sunkar Time won a maiden race at about seven furlongs July 18. But instead of it coming in his native state or even in the U.S., it occurred in Russia. Bruce C. Ryan bred Sunkar Time in Kentucky out of the Left Banker mare Kiosk. Lane’s End consigned the colt to the 2019 Keeneland September yearling sale, where Mikhail Yanakov’s Olympia Star purchased him for $14,000. Perry Martin and Steve Coburn bred California Chrome, a son of Lucky Pulpit—Love the Chase, by Not For Love. The colt famously won the 2014 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1), ultimately winning 16 of 27 races, including the 2016 Dubai World Cup (G1), for earnings of $14,752,650. California Chrome retired to TayCalifornia Chrome lor Made Farm in Kentucky for the 2017 season, and his frst foals are 2-year-olds of 2020. He has shuttled to Chile and now stands in Japan.

HISTORY

10 YEARS AGO Ten years ago Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing lost FRANK “SCOOP” VESSELS III, a past president of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association. Vessels, 58, died Aug. 11, 2010, when his plane that he was piloting crashed in Oregon. Vessels designed, built, and owned Vessels Stallion Farm in Bonsall, Calif., where such major stallions as leading California Thoroughbred sire In Excess and Quarter Horse legend First Down Dash stood. The farm has continued to produce top horses, now called Ocean Breeze Ranch and the home of recently pensioned leading California sire Square Eddie. Vessels also served as president of the American Quarter Horse Association and as a member of The Jockey Club. “His wide range of contributions to the entire horse industry, as well as his great attitude and zeal for excellence, were an inspiration to us all,” said John Harris, another former CTBA president.

25 YEARS AGO California-bred 2-year-old flly BATROYALE captured two graded races at Del Mar during August 1995. She frst scored in the Sorrento Stakes (G2) Aug. 9, and added the Del Mar Debutante Stakes (G2) Aug. 27. Bob Baffert trained the daughter of Batonnier—Royal Merger, by Princely Native, for owners Robert and Barbara Walter. Robert Walter bred the flly. In the $104,200 Sorrento at 61⁄2 furlongs, Batroyale and

jockey Gary Stevens scored by 21⁄4 lengths over favored Cosmic Fire, stopping the timer in 1:15.26. Martin Pedroza piloted Batroyale in the $250,000 Debutante at seven furlongs. Favored at 2-1, Batroyale defeated longshot Proud Dixie by four lengths in 1:22.55. Batroyale was named the year’s champion Cal-bred 2-year-old flly, and she ultimately earned $411,309.

50 YEARS AGO California-bred BARGAIN DAY set a course record at Del Mar when winning the Bing Crosby Handicap Aug. 12, 1970. The 5-year-old horse, ridden by Rudy Rosales, held off multiple stakes winner Pinjara to win by a head in 1:273⁄5 for the turf distance of about 71⁄2 furlongs. Rex Ellsworth bred Bargain Day, a son of Prove It—Special Price, by Toulouse Lautrec, and Bargain Day fnished third in the La Jolla Mile Handicap for him in 1968. E. E. (Buddy) Fogelson then purchased Bargain Day privately and raced him in the name of Forked Lightning Ranch. Charlie Whittingham trained Bargain Day for Fogelson. The following year they collaborated on Horse of the Year Ack Ack. Bargain Day earned a total of $146,575 and stood at stud in California at Van Mar Farm, siring the likes of world-record setter Hoedown’s Day and living to age 37.

Jerry Benowitz Jerry Benowitz, one of the owners of California-bred millionaire Soi Phet, died July 8 at age 75. Retired and living in Las Vegas, Benowitz was an avid horseplayer. His business interests ranged from stockbroker to owning pre-kindergarten centers and running a reminder-service company. He and his wife, Sandra, regularly spent time during the summers at Del Mar, where they had a box and could visit Jeff and Allison, two of their adult children who live in the area. The Benowitzes have a third adult child, Brian, and six grandchildren. While Jerry enjoyed visiting the couple’s horses on the backstretch, he could only do so for a limited time because he was allergic to horses.

Sharon Alesia Sharon Alesia, who participated in a partnership that owned and bred several stakes-winning California-breds, including millionaire Ashleyluvssugar, died June 15 in Carlsbad. She was 83. Peter Eurton trains horses for the Alesia partnership, begun by Sharon’s late husband, Frank. Sharon became friends with Valerie Mellen through an aerobics class in La Costa, Calif., and soon the Alesias were dining out with Valerie and her husband, Mike, becoming good friends. The Alesias and Mike Mellen’s Bran Jam Stable raced horses together, originally with Anthony Cappelli and later with Joe Ciaglia. Ciaglia, Eurton, and bloodstock agent Larry Zap have purchased many of the partnership’s horses. Runners have included Eclipse Award winner Champagne Room, grade 1 winner Weemissfrankie, and a long line of Calbreds out of the mare Ashley’s Folly. A two-time California Broodmare of the Year, Ashley’s Folly has produced Ashleyluvssugar (by Game Plan) and multiple stakes-placed Ashley’s Sassy (by Decarchy). Ashleyluvssugar won six stakes, including two editions of the Charles Whittingham Stakes (G2T), retiring this past March with earnings of $1,488,083. He was voted champion Cal-bred turf horse of 2016 and 2017 and champion Cal-bred older male of 2017. Sharon Alesia was also a partner in Pacifc Heat, champion Cal-bred 2-year-old flly of 2015, and Cal-bred graded stakes winner Cheekaboo. John Harris’ Harris Farms and Donald Valpredo bred Pacifc Heat, a daughter of Unusual Heat—Hotlantic, by Stormy Atlantic. Ciaglia purchased the flly from Harris Farms for $175,000 at the 2014 Barretts October yearling sale. She went on to win three stakes. At that same sale, also from the Harris consignment, Ciaglia paid $55,000 for Cheekaboo. Madeline Auerbach, Richard Rosenberg, and Barry Abrams bred the daughter of Unusual Heat—Sandy Cheeks, by Souvenir Copy. Cheekaboo won the 2016 Honeymoon Stakes (G2T).

“My wife loves the breeding and loves to be at the barn,” he once said. “I enjoy the relationships with the people.” Trainer Leonard Powell claimed Soi Phet for $16,000 in 2013 and brought the Benowitzes into the partnership with Powell’s wife, Mathilde, and Paul Viskovich. Soi Phet (Tizbud—Summer Jersey, by Siberian Summer) went on to earn $1,023,917. He won eight stakes, including two editions of the Bertrando Stakes, renamed the Soi Phet Stakes this year at Los Alamitos. The Benowitz Family Trust was also a partner in Powell-trained Fatale Bere. That French-bred mare was a multiple graded winner and earner of $427,964. She won the 2018 Del Mar Oaks (G1T). The family has asked that any donations be made to Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Farms near Georgetown, Ky., where Soi Phet, now 12, is living out his retirement.

Ralph Vacca Ralph Vacca, who worked in the Thoroughbred racing industry his entire life, primarily with the Washington Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, died July 20. He was 84. Like the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association, the WTBOA (formerly the Washington Horse Breeders Association) promotes the industry on all levels. It serves its membership through such activities as lobbying the state legislature, publishing a magazine and stallion register, and conducting sales. Vacca worked in almost every facet of the organization, primarily as its longtime general manager. Born in Seattle, Vacca developed a love of horses early when he and his brother Richard found a stable where they could ride. His parents enjoyed attending the races at Longacres, and Ralph walked hots on the backstretch while growing up. He later attended Washington State College and was a recipient of a WHBA scholarship. Vacca spent two stints working in Kentucky, and in between he served the WHBA as feld secretary. He returned to Washington again in 1964 to work for the WHBA, frst as advertising manager for The Washington Horse and later as the magazine editor. He was appointed interim general manager for the WHBA in 1973 and to the position outright later that year. Before he retired at the end of 2007, Vacca helped in the creation of Emerald Downs, the Washington track founded by Ron Crockett. Vacca also served on the Washington Horse Racing Commission, and in 2013 he was inducted into the Washington Racing Hall of Fame.

California sire Tizbud, a full brother to California-bred champion Tiznow, was euthanized July 20 because of an overall decline in health. The 21-year-old stallion had stood at John Harris’ Harris Farms in Coalinga until being pensioned at the farm in 2018. Cecilia Straub Rubens bred Tizbud and Tiznow, both sons of Cee’s Tizzy—Cee’s Song, by Seattle Song. Straub Rubens died in late 2000, and Tizbud began racing for Cees Stable the following year. He won the California Cup Classic Handicap and ran third in the 2003 San Fernando Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G2). He earned a total of $230,266 in his career. Pamela Ziebarth, Straub Rubens’ daughter, stood Tizbud at Harris and bred such runners

by the stallion as grade 1 winner Tiz Flirtatious, grade 3 winner Ambitious Brew, and stakes winner Kitty Boom Boom. Tizbud’s other stakes winners include Soi Phet (an earner of $1,023,917), Italian Boy, Catch Lorraine, and Chao Chom. “As different as they were, Tiznow and Tizbud both had that aura of ‘I am tops and I can prove it and don’t test me.’ ” said David McGlothlin, retired farm manager of Harris Farms. “With my daily rounds at the farm, Tizbud was always my frst stop, and as always, he was eager for his carrot snacks.” Tizbud lived out his fnal few months in the same paddock where his famous brother was raised. He will be buried adjacent to his sire, Cee’s Tizzy, near the Harris Farms Stallion complex.

Dear California Toroughbred Foundation, I want to express my gratitude for your generosity Julissa Hoogeveen in regards to the California Toroughbred Foundation scholarship. I grew up in Chino Hills, Calif., in an equestrian community and knew from a young age my career would combine my love for horses and desire to give back to the community. When I was accepted into the DVM program at Western University of Health Sciences, these dreams were realized. I look forward to graduating in 2021 as an equine veterinarian with a focus in rehabilitation and integrative medicine. Tis scholarship will help ofset some of the fnancial burden obtained while I earn my doctorate. I look forward to giving back to the equestrian community, WesternU, and the California Toroughbred Foundation. Tank you for your generosity, Julissa Hoogeveen DVM Class of 2021

Blast from the Past

Cal-bred Best Pal defeats his elders in the inaugural running of the Pacifc Classic Stakes at Del Mar

Best Pal’s Legacy, Thirty Years Later THE GOLDEN STATE’S GOLDEN BOY

B

BY EMILY SHIELDS

y the time he retired, California-bred titan Best Pal had won 18 times and earned $5,668,245. His brilliance on a national level was reminiscent of a Swaps or a Snow Chief, and paved the way for the likes of Tiznow and California Chrome.

But before he ever debuted as a juvenile 30 years ago, Best Pal was nothing more than a bad-tempered colt with suspect breeding. He was a nearly unmarked bay save for a few white hairs, and gave no indication he would go on to be one of the 22

sport’s brightest starts. Best Pal was born Feb. 12, 1988, a son of Habitony. An Irish-bred multiple graded stakes winner of such races as the Santa Anita Derby (G1), Habitony was standing at John and Betty Mabee’s Golden Eagle

Farm in Ramona. Although he would go on to also sire crack sprinter Richter Scale, at stud Habitony had a record that was far from impressive to that point. He entered stud in Pennsylvania before being sent to Japan in 1980. He started standing at Golden Eagle in 1984. Te Mabees were trying to downsize their operation when they brought on manager Gayle Van Leer. She recalls that “Mr. Mabee said to me, ‘Tere are a bunch of horses out there that don’t look like they

can run. We need to clean house. Make it happen.’ “Te whole crop of Habitonys were completely suspect,” Van Leer said. “Nothing had happened for him so far. It was my job to move the horses through the farm.” Van Leer set to work bringing horses in to train, sending them to the track to run, and eventually be claimed away. Best Pal was a weanling when she frst arrived and didn’t look special. “He was a plain brown horse,” Van Leer said. “We never expected him to turn out to be what he turned out to be.” Best Pal’s dam side ofered little hope. His dam, the King Pellinore mare Ubetshedid, started only once and failed to win, and she had produced only one winner from three foals. And then there was also Best Pal’s temperament. “Tat line was tough to handle,” Van Leer said. “When we were breaking them as 2-year-olds, we basically gelded every single one of them. Tat was always a great quote from Mr. Mabee, saying that I was the one who made the decision to geld Best Pal. But he never said we gelded every single one of them!” Best Pal graduated to the racetrack, with John Mabee selecting trainer Ian Jory to take the reins. “Mr. Mabee was always good about helping the young up-and-coming trainers, which is how Ian ended up with the horse,” Van Leer said. “We tagged Best Pal as a horse that would get to the races early and be one of those 2-year-olds that got the ball rolling for the year while the fancier bred ones were coming along. He had shown ability, but he was by Habitony.” Tat’s why Best Pal’s maiden win frst out at Hollywood Park in 1990 came as something of a shock. “From there, your choice is to run in a stakes race,” said Van Leer. “So we just kept throwing him into the next stakes and the next stakes, fguring the bubble would burst. It never did.” Best Pal fnished second in the Ladbroke Futurity at Golden Gate Fields June 23 behind Broadways Top Gun, trained by fedgling Toroughbred trainer Bob Baffert. Te Habitony gelding then shipped down to Del Mar for the summer. “I had heard about him through the

grapevine because he was owned by Mr. Mabee,” recalled Dan Smith, Del Mar’s media coordinator. Mabee was Del Mar’s chairman of the board at the time. “I’d heard he was a runner.” In the $50,000 I’m Smokin Stakes, Best Pal was sent of as a strong favorite under jockey Patrick Valenzuela and blitzed the feld, winning by seven lengths. Te horse who ran second, Just as Swift, had just won the Alameda Futurity 21 days before. “When I saw him coming down the stretch, I knew this horse was indeed a runner,” Smith said. “It was one of those things

Best Pal was coupled with the Mabees’ maiden-breaking Secretariat son Magnifcent Red for the 43rd running of the $200,000 Del Mar Futurity (G2) over a mile. He settled in second behind the speed of the race, Formal Diner, before pouncing and powering home 31⁄2 lengths clear. With the win, Best Pal frmly stamped himself as the best juvenile in the country. He was also one of the toughest. “He could be very mean,” Van Leer said. “He never would have made it as a colt. Te grooms all had to learn how to get along with him over time. But the best

you experience when you realize a horse is for real. He ran with so much determination, and he had a great stride. His pedigree was pretty ordinary, but he was obviously a superior animal. You could tell he was going to be a horse to reckon with.” Best Pal was back in the gate 26 days later for the $75,000 Balboa Stakes (G3). Favoritism went to the precocious D. Wayne Lukas trainee Iroquois Park, a $235,000 purchase by Chief’s Crown. Tat gray colt was coming of a win in Del Mar’s De Anza Stakes and had also broken his maiden in good fashion. Best Pal outran him and fve others, scoring by two lengths. “He was obviously a very nice prospect, and Patrick Valenzuela ft him like a glove,” Smith said. “Patrick had all the confdence in the world in him.”

thing about him is that he would do anything for a carrot. He was a carrot-eating machine.” Van Leer remembered several moments when she needed to keep passing carrots to Best Pal while working with him and even just putting his halter on. She attributed his nature to his intelligence. “I’ve been around a lot of horses, and he still to this day is one of the smartest horses I’ve ever seen,” she said. “I would swear he was human. You just had to learn to deal with that intelligence, and then he would give you everything you wanted.” Best Pal went on to win the Norfolk Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita en route to the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Belmont Park. He fnished sixth behind Fly So Free, who had previously won the

Champagne Stakes (G1) over the Belmont surface. While Fly So Free fnished the year with two grade 1 wins and no other stakes victories, Best Pal added the Hollywood Futurity (G1) and fnished his season with fve stakes wins, two of them grade 1s. He still lost the Eclipse Award for champion 2-year-old male to Fly So Free. California voters were more forgiving of his Breeders’ Cup blip. Best Pal was named the Golden State’s champion 2-year-old male and Horse of the Year, defeating such top runners as Brown Bess, Sensational Star, and Flying Continental for the latter honor. He would go on to be named California-bred Horse of the Year in 1991 and 1992 as well, with eight total California championships before retirement. Despite his prowess as a juvenile and his eventual success as an older horse, Best Pal lost his frst fve races as a sophomore. He fnished second in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) before running second, beaten 13⁄4 lengths, in the 1991 Kentucky Derby (G1) under Gary Stevens. After running ffth in the Preakness Stakes (G1), Best Pal was odds on to win the Silver Screen Handicap (G3) at Hollywood Park but was still outfnished by a neck. Frustrated, the Mabees transferred Best Pal to trainer Gary Jones, who immediately turned him around to win the $205,000 Swaps Stakes (G2). As Del Mar’s chairman of the board, 24

John Mabee created a brand new 11⁄4-mile race for older horses in the summer at Del Mar, a signature event that would draw top runners from around the country. Te inaugural Pacifc Classic could not go ahead without a Mabee runner, and Best Pal ft the bill. Just a sophomore, Best Pal outran 1990 Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled and grade 1 winner Farma Way and future

grade 1 winner Itsallgreektome to win by a length over Twilight Agenda. For the fans, it was a thrill. “He was a draw,” Smith said of the popular gelding. “He had his following for sure. Tey all turned out to see Best Pal run.” Best Pal ran in Del Mar’s big race twice more, fnishing third in 1993 and second in 1994. Trained from mid-1994 to the end of his career by Richard Mandella,

CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED ❙ August 2020 ❙ www.ctba.com

Best Pal continued his career with 10 more stakes wins, including the 1992 Santa Anita Handicap (G1) and 1993 Hollywood Gold Cup (G1). He was also a major player in the early days of the California Cup and won the Wells Fargo Bank California Cup Classic Handicap in 1993 by 31⁄2 lengths with Corey Black in the saddle. “It’s real special to have a horse like this win the Cal Cup,” said John Mabee after the Cal Cup Classic. “It’s super to have a horse of this kind. It’s once in a lifetime you get one of them.” Best Pal was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2010. As a gelding with options for a second career, he was retrained into a pony and worked with the young horses at Golden Eagle. For three years Best Pal led the post parade for the Pacifc Classic, coming alive when he returned to Del Mar. “He was absolutely happy at the track,” Van Leer said. “I do think he was exceptionally good at Del Mar. It was pretty clear that was his happy place.” “He was fun to watch,” Smith said. “He always gave you his best efort and never phoned it in. I admired that.” Best Pal died of a heart attack in November 1998, with both his sire Habitony (who died in 2001) and dam Ubetshedid (2003) outliving him. Part of Best Pal’s enduring legacy is that the Balboa Stakes, which he so brilliantly won 30 years ago, was renamed in his honor. It has since been won by horses such as Preakness Stakes winner Lookin At Lucky and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Kentucky Derby hero Nyquist. “He was a bigger-than-life horse,” said Van Leer, who has for many years been a successful bloodstock agent. “He checked all the boxes that make a successful racehorse. He had the structural ability to create those strides and the heart to run down any horse in front of him. “Trough the whole thing, he was still a plain brown horse that wasn’t going to catch your eye, and you would never say he had a magnifcent stride or anything. Soi Phet and California Dreamin’ Stakes

Cal-bred Galilean captures the Soi Phet Stakes, previously the Bertrando Stakes, at Los Alamitos

GALILEAN WITHIN A MONTH WON THE SOI PHET AT LOS ALAMITOS AND THE CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’ AT DEL MAR BY TRACY GANTZ

or the frst time in the history of what was originally the Bertrando Stakes at Los Alamitos, former claimer and eventual millionaire Soi Phet did not compete. Twice winner of the race in six attempts, the now-retired Soi Phet is today remembered with the race being renamed for him. Te renewal June 27 brought together a talented group of seven California-breds and one Oregon-bred, Grinning Tiger, a son of California sire

Smiling Tiger. Several had multiple stakes credentials, but the standout, according to bettors, was Galilean, sent of as the even-money favorite. Galilean has stood out in a crowd most of his life. K. Neal and Pam Christopherson bought the son of Uncle Mo in utero in the name of their Bar C Racing Stables when they paid $35,000 for his dam, the El Prado mare Fresia, at the 2015 Keeneland November sale. Fresia produced Galilean in 2016 at John Harris’ Harris Ranch in Coalinga, and the colt was a looker from the outset. He sold for $60,000 at the 2017 Barretts select yearling sale and developed into an even more attractive

2-year-old sale prospect. Consigned by Eddie Woods to the 2018 Barretts spring 2-year-old sale, Galilean impressed buyers to such an extent that he topped the sale at $600,000. Terry Finley of West Point Toroughbreds signed the ticket, saying at the time, “I just thought he was a beautiful horse that would have ft in any of the sales.” Under Jerry Hollendorfer’s tutelage at 2 and 3, Galilean won the 2018 Barretts Juvenile Stakes and King Glorious Stakes and the 2019 California Cup Derby. He also fnished third in a division of the 2019 Rebel Stakes (G2). Prior to the 2019 Arkansas Derby (G1), West Point sold an interest in

Galilean to Coolmore Stud. John Sadler now trains the colt for West Point, Denise Barker, William Sandbrook, and Coolmore principals John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith. Coming into the one-mile Soi Phet at Los Alamitos, Galilean had fnished third in two open allowance optional claiming races at Santa Anita, one at 51⁄2 furlongs and the other at 61⁄2 furlongs. “I defnitely think he’s a better twoturn horse, and he likes this track,” said Sadler’s assistant trainer Alex Bisono after the race. Indeed, Galilean demonstrated his affnity for Los Alamitos in the Soi Phet. Cal-bred champion 3-year-old male Take the One O One spurted to the lead, tracked by Grinning Tiger, most recently winner of the Crystal Water Stakes. Jockey Juan Hernandez kept Galilean in third, following Sadler’s instructions to try and sit just outside the speed. Tat meant Galilean had to race four wide on the second turn, but the extra distance did not matter. “Tis horse relaxed perfectly, and I wanted to wait until the stretch to make a move,” said Hernandez. “He exploded when I asked him.” Once Hernandez pressed the button, Galilean swooped to the front and began lengthening what became an impressive lead. He lugged in without incident to score by four lengths in 1:35.49. Soi Phet holds the track record of 1:33.95, set in 2014. “I wish he had run a little bit straighter down the stretch,” said Bisono. “But he didn’t bother anybody because he was clear. He was comfortable the whole way.” Grinning Tiger held on for second, a head in front of Brandothebartender, who stumbled at the start to come away in last and rallied for the show spot. ON TO DEL MAR

Los Alamitos doesn’t have a turf course whereas Del Mar traditionally features a wide range of turf opportunities. So when the circuit moved south, the Golden State Stakes program for older horses also switched surfaces. Tat didn’t deter most of the Soi Phet feld. Six of the eight in the Soi Phet headed for the $127,500 California

Having proved he’s just as good on turf by winning the California Dreamin’ Stakes, Galilean and jockey Flavien Prat return to the Del Mar winner’s circle

Dreamin’ Stakes on the turf at Del Mar July 26. Te distance stretched out from a mile to 11⁄16 miles. Five others joined the Soi Phet bunch. Galilean had never raced on turf, in part because last year he tried the Triple Crown trail. But Uncle Mo can certainly sire California grass runners. His son Mo Town captured the 2017 Hollywood Derby (G1T), and his daughter Mokat won the 2016 San Clemente Handicap (G2T), both at Del Mar. Last year at Santa Anita, Epical won the San Luis Rey Stakes (G2T) and Mo Forza took the Qatar Twilight Derby (G2T). Camino Del Paraiso brought an impressive turf resume to the California Dreamin’ and was made the 5-2 morning-line favorite. However, bettors opted for Galilean’s overall record and sent him away as the 6-5 choice, with Camino Del Paraiso at 4-1. Tat matchup didn’t materialize because Camino Del Paraiso clipped heels in the stretch and lost jockey Drayden Van Dyke. Both horse and rider appeared fne immediately afterward.

Galilean, ridden this time by Flavien Prat, bumped with Camino Del Paraiso to his inside at the start and then settled into fourth. Grinning Tiger and Take the One O One vied with each other for the lead through most of the frst part of the race. Tose tactics took a toll later, as they both tired. Prat credited Galilean, saying, “Tis horse today put me in a good spot. I was able to save ground, and he ran well to fnish.” Galilean got to the lead in the stretch. Longshot Whooping Jay closed from eighth, but he couldn’t catch Galilean, who beat him by a half-length and stopped the timer in 1:40.87. Brandothebartender ran third, the same position he fnished in the Soi Phet. “A beautiful ride by Flavien,” Sadler said after the race. “A ground-saving trip, and he liked the turf just as we thought he would.” With the California Dreamin’ victory, Galilean brought his record to fve wins, one second, and three thirds in 10 starts for earnings of $514,098.

Golden State Series—Fleet Treat Stakes

SWEEPING VICTORY BIG SWEEP CLEANS UP IN FLEET TREAT

BY TRACY GANTZ

“She had a great body, and she looked like the sale didn’t bother her any,” said Cohen in recalling why he purchased Big Sweep. “She’s not huge. She’s just really well built. She’s a proper-looking, strong flly.” George Krikorian bred Big Sweep from the City Zip mare Misszippityslewda. Te mare, who is from the family of Eclipse Award champion sprinter Groovy, won races in Louisiana, New York, and New Jersey, earning $186,955. Krikorian paid $22,000 for her as a 6-year-old at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky February mixed sale. Big Sweep broke her maiden in her racing debut at Santa Anita this past March. Two months later she beat males in the $151,500 Echo Eddie Stakes at six furlongs. She stretched out to 11⁄16 miles for the $150,500 Melair Stakes at Santa Anita June 21 and fnished third behind Warren’s Showtime and Smiling Shirlee. “Te frst time she went two turns it was a small feld, but there was a lot of stuf going on and I just think she got a little confused,” said Cohen. Te owner doesn’t believe distance will be a problem for the 3-year-old flly, and both Glatt and jockey Flavien Prat are eager to try her on the turf. Te Fleet Treat at frst looked like a rematch for Big Sweep, Warren’s Showtime, and Smiling Shirlee, all stakes winners. But Warren’s Showtime scratched in favor of the next day’s San Clemente Stakes (G2T), where she fnished third. Tat left a feld of four for the seven-furlong Fleet Treat, with Big Sweep sent away the 13-10 favorite. Prat has ridden Big Sweep in each of her four starts. “She broke well and traveled well all the way around,” Prat said. “She was relaxed in the early part; then, at the half-mile she began to pick it up.” 28

ell before California sire Mr. Big took up residence at the Cohen family’s Rancho Temescal in Piru, Tim Cohen and trainer Mark Glatt liked the looks of one of his daughters. Tey purchased Big Sweep for $40,000 at the 2018 Barretts October yearling sale, and she has already earned $212,250 and won two stakes, including the $117,500 Fleet Treat Stakes at Del Mar July 24.

Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal’s Big Sweep gives her rivals a dusting in Del Mar’s Fleet Treat Stakes for Cal-breds

Loud Loud Music, the longest shot in the feld, set the early pace, posting fractions of :22.83 and :46.63. Big Sweep tracked her easily in second from the outside, drew even with her on the turn, and moved into the lead in the upper stretch. “I hit her with the whip one time, but that was it,” said Prat. “She gave me a good kick.” Indeed, Big Sweep dominated the stretch run, ultimately defeating Been Studying Her, a two-time stakes winner at 2 last year, by 21⁄4 lengths in 1:24.44. Evening Jewel Stakes winner Smiling Shirlee fnished third, with Loud Loud Music fading to fourth. “Te cutback in distance certainly helped today,” said Glatt. “But this flly will go long. She’ll get a distance. We’re pretty anxious to get her on the grass. Flavien thinks the dirt seems to get away from her a little bit, and with a little more sure footing on the turf, she might be even better.” Big Sweep’s versatility extends to her running style. “She’s run a little diferent every time,” said Cohen. “I think she enjoys the Del Mar dirt better than Santa Anita.” Te 3-year-old flly has only run against her own age group in stakes so far, though she broke her maiden against her elders. Next she could face older distafers in a Cal-bred stakes or tackle the turf.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF DR. WILLIAM T. AND JILL GRAY

THE GRAYS CLIMB THE PEAK OF SUCCESS WITH CAL-BREDS

r. William T. Gray is a self-proclaimed “realist,” saying, “I’ve never aspired to win the Kentucky Derby. I just want some $25,000 to $50,000 claiming horses that will pay the bills, and some hard-knocking mares who win 10 races so that we can breed those and get more of them.” Te strategy has worked beyond expectations. Despite their modest intentions, Dr. Gray and his wife, Jill, have been responsible for horses such as Tornado Betty, Weewinnin, and 2020 stakes

winner Indian Peak. Gray grew up in the New Mexico horse racing business. His father, Wesley, was a trainer of both Quarter Horses and Toroughbreds. At 85, the elder Gray is still involved with raising foals but no longer trains. William remembers partnering with his father on some yearlings in the early 1980s and racing horses until he went to vet school. “I sold them all so I could go to school,” he said. “I didn’t start my own breeding program until 1998 or 1999.” While Gray was just restarting his racing business,

his veterinary outft was booming. He had a large animal practice in Cottonwood, Calif., where he did a lot of equine and cattle veterinary work. “It didn’t take me very long to realize that everyone who has a horse has a dog,” Gray said, “and if they had cows, they could have 10 dogs. So I started doing small animal practice as well.” At the height of his business, Gray had a large animal practice and a small animal practice with seven veterinarians working for him. In 2015 he sold the practices and semi-retired, but still does farm calls. Te Grays have 150 acres of their own in Cottonwood, branded Gray Farms on the sign out front. Tey have a herd of cattle, 15 broodmares, and a pair of stallions: Southern Image and Far From Over. Southern Image was a California-based star. Te son of Halo’s Image—Pleasant Dixie, by Dixieland Band, ran just eight times with six wins, a second, and a third. He earned $1,843,750, with signature victories in the 2003 Malibu Stakes (G1), 2004 Santa Anita Handicap (G1), and 2004 Pimlico Special Handicap (G1). Mike Machowsky trained the leggy dark bay, who was quick enough to bring $300,000 as a juvenile at the 2002 Ocala Breeders’ Sales’ March 2-year-olds auction. Te stallion’s runners include multiple graded stakes winner Calibrachoa and multiple stakes winner Winning Image. Te Grays are excited

about their newest acquisition, Far From Over. Te son of Blame— Alchemist, by A.P. Indy, was a three-time winner in six starts, including the 2015 Withers Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct. He was a candidate for that year’s Triple Crown trail before injury knocked him to the sidelines. “I was looking at stallions at WinStar Farm in Kentucky,” Gray said, “and I stumbled upon this horse boarding there on layup. Te owners had put a price on him, and I said I would take him. I went the next day to pick him up, but they’d changed their minds. So I came home empty-handed.” A week later Gray was asked if he was still interested. “I said I’d already bought him once!” Gray laughed. “I’m kind of excited about him,” Gray admitted. “I’ve been in this long enough that I know getting a stallion proven is the hardest thing there is. It’s easier to get a graded stakes horse to win. But his babies sure look good.” Te Grays have previous stallion experience; they were involved with Comic Strip. Te $965,474-earning son of Red Ransom has sired some of the Grays’ best horses, including stakes winners Tornado Betty, Weewinnin, and Handfull, as well as stakes-placed Light One. Tornado Betty was claimed away from the Grays in her fourth start, then went on to win the Arizona Juvenile Fillies and the Arizona Oaks at Turf Paradise, as well as the Goldfnch Stakes at Prairie Meadows. She earned $230,015 with six wins, 10 seconds, and six thirds in 33 starts. Weewinnin won four of 12 starts and was a three-time stakes winner, taking the $200,000 King Glorious Stakes as a juvenile, the $251,500 California Cup Turf Classic Stakes as a 21-1 shot as a 4-year-old, and the $151,000 California Dreamin’

Stakes as a 5-year-old. He was a stakes winner at Santa Anita, Del Mar, and Betfair Hollywood Park, earning $397,430. Handfull, an earner of $341,400, won the California Governor’s Cup Handicap at the Sacramento fair in 2015 and took the March Madness Starter Handicap at Santa Anita twice. Multiple stakes-placed flly Light One was third in the 2015 Xpressbet California Cup Oaks in just her third lifetime start. More recently Comic Strip is the sire of the Grays’ 2020 star, Indian Peak. Te 3-year-old homebred out of the Roar mare Ms. Booty is in training with Quinn Howey and won the $151,000 Snow Chief Stakes June 20 at Santa Anita. Te dark bay colt has won four of his 10 starts. Gray credits his wife for their success. “Jill has been my wife for 40 years,” he said. “She does all the work. I wouldn’t have them if it wasn’t for her. She likes going to the races, but she really likes just taking care of the farm and the babies.” Having the farm also helps. “It’s real handy for us,” Gray said. “If the 2-year-olds have any problems, we can bring them home and give them three months. A lot of people don’t have the luxury of having a farm they can use.” Outside of their own breeding operation, the biggest thrill that the Grays have had was with Collect Call. Te couple owned a part of the Kentucky-bred daughter of Meadowlake when she ran third in the 2001 Kentucky Oaks (G1). “Our neighbors and friends Rod and Lorraine Rodriguez let us share in the mare’s campaign,” Gray recalled. “It was a great experience.” Between their stallions and mares at the farm and Indian Peak on the track, the Grays are due for more great experiences ahead.

hits the opposite foot. “If the horn-growing cells of the coronary band are damaged, there can be a continual defect in the hoof wall that grows down from that area,” Mills said. In such a case, the coronary band can no longer produce normal, strong hoof horn. Tat foot might require careful shoeing for the rest of the horse’s life to ensure there won’t be any stress on that weak area of the hoof wall that might cause it to crack and separate. An area in the hoof wall could become weaker and more prone to hoof cracks. “If the damage is afecting the quar-

ter, the horse may be prone to quarter cracks,” said Mills. “You have to always account for the heel of the foot growing at a diferent rate than the rest of the hoof wall. Health that as the hoof wall grows out, there may be some changes that have to be done with trimming and shoeing in the future.” TREATING A CORONET WOUND

DR. JULIE BULLOCK

Once the initial frst-aid care is accomplished immediately after the injury—applied pressure to stop the bleeding—it’s important to clean the hoof and get it properly bandaged and dressed to allow that area to heal. “Tis is a difcult area to stitch,” said Cassells, “partly because there is a lot of

fection in there,” said Cassells. “Some people prefer to use a cast, since this simplifes the care and it’s not as involved as a daily bandage change. “Tere are diferent schools of thought on this. Some people like to take the bandage of every day and take a look at it to make sure it’s healing the way they want. Other people want to put a cast on as a low-maintenance treatment option. It all depends on the situation, the horse, the owner, and the veterinarian who is in charge of the case.

An injury on or near the coronary band might be diffcult to treat

movement, but also because that tissue does not hold suture material very well. “If it is right on the coronary band, we can’t suture into the hoof wall. Usually we depend on appropriate bandaging to stabilize the area and let it heal by what we call second intention (as opposed to sutures). Tis means we simply let the wound close over from the inside out. Tis is usually the best way to get these to heal just because they are often difcult to stitch. If the wound comes farther up onto the pastern, we can suture that area.” Sometimes a cast is used to immobilize the tissues until they can heal and grow back together. “If we are going to apply a cast, the area must be adequately cleaned frst because otherwise it will just trap in36

“I have found that sometimes it’s a good idea to take radiographs just to make sure there is no deeper damage, such as to the cofn bone or joint. In most cases these wounds don’t get that deep, so x-rays may or may not be warranted, based on the case. Te times I usually take an x-ray are when the horse is very lame—much more lame than it should be for just a wound—or if there is injury from a foreign object, such as sheet metal, if the horse kicked through the barn wall.” Sometimes a horse may jam a foreign object through the coronary band, such as a splinter of wood down inside the hoof. Tis is like driving a nail under your fngernail, and sometimes the splinter can puncture into the cofn joint. If there is suspicion that part of

CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED ❙ August 2020 ❙ www.ctba.com

that foreign object might still be embedded in the hoof, it’s good to do some imaging like an x-ray or ultrasound. In those cases, the fragments would need to be surgically removed, and this can be a challenge. But sometimes it can simply be pulled out. “Tis can be very rewarding, when we get it out of there, like getting a splinter out from under your fngernail,” said Cassells. “Antibiotics are recommended for these situations (and usually any time there is a deep wound to the coronary band) because the foot is always in an unsanitary environment, whether (the horse is) walking around in the stall, pen, or pasture. Tere’s always some dust and dirt, so antibiotics are a good idea.” Dr. Olivia Rudolphi of Rudolphi Veterinary Services in Noble, Ill., says the coronary band injuries she sees are often lacerations due to a horse getting a foot caught. “Tis may involve a cut clear through the coronary band or a fap that pulls downward and pulls the hoof wall of with it, or fips upward and still has the skin attached,” Rudolphi said. “Sometimes we have to remove the entire portion that is unattached.” Rudolphi recommends antibiotics and making sure the horse’s tetanus vaccinations are up-to-date. “If it’s a wound that can’t be sutured, the veterinarian may also use some biologic or regenerative therapies to help it grow back a little better,” she said. “If there is a lot of hoof wall involved, it is also good to have your farrier on hand to collaborate with the veterinarian.” If the hoof wall is unstable, it’s important to have an appropriate shoe to support it and eliminate any pressure that would tend to spread that area as it heals. Te hoof wall can take up to a year to grow out fully. Even then the hoof might end up with a mild distortion in that area that will have to be managed long-term, with the farrier doing special trimming and shoeing. Dr. Duncan Peters is with East-West Equine Sports Medicine in Lexington, Ky. He says that many coronary band injuries are severe lacerations. “In racehorses these injuries some-

BRUISING

In racehorses these injuries sometimes occur when horses are wearing shoes with toe grabs. If the horse gets a little unbalanced during a race or speed workout, one foot may come up and catch the coronary band of another foot and cause signifcant trauma.” — Dr. Duncan Peters

“If there is joint fuid present in the injury, we will probably need to fush those joints and keep that lower leg area bandaged and very clean,” said Peters. “Te treatment may be quite complicated in order to have a good outcome.”

“Even without a laceration, there may be serious bruising,” said Peters. “Some of the tissues underneath the coronary band may have prolonged soreness. Tere is good blood and nerve supply in that area, and trauma to those underlying tissues can be very painful. Tere is quite a bit of movement there; the coronary band has to fex and move every time the horse puts that foot down. “I’ve seen horses that bang a foot or step on themselves with dramatic bruising on the coronary band. You can often see a red spot on the coronary band at the top of the hoof, especially in a white-footed horse. You can see that red spot in the hoof wall grow down as the hoof grows. Tis means there was probably some bruising and a hematoma under there, and some of those horses will stay sore and a bit lame on that foot for three weeks to a couple of months.”

ANNE M. EBERHARDT

times occur when horses are wearing shoes with toe grabs,” Peters said. “If the horse gets a little unbalanced during a race or speed workout, one foot may come up and catch the coronary band of another foot, and cause signifcant trauma. Tis might be anything from bruising to lacerations.” Some of these injuries need careful evaluation and surgical repair. “Tere are many important structures right around the coronary band, including the cofn joint,” said Peters. “Te bony recesses/pouches of this joint come close to the collateral cartilages that come of the cofn bone. Tese can be damaged if something cuts into them and can potentially cause infections. Te bones themselves—pastern and cofn bone—can be injured, along with their ligament attachments. Tis may include the cofn joint and pastern joints.” Careful evaluation of any damage to the coronary band is imperative in order to see what structures might be involved.

If a hoof wall has been damaged and is still growing out, proper farrier work might be necessary to protect and stabilize the foot

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through July 26, 2020.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
