GREEN LIGHT California attorney general clears tribal sports betting initiative for signatures to meet the deadline for the November ballot.

coalition of Californians has fled language with the attorney general to permit the voters to decide whether to allow legal sports wagering on tribal lands and at four private horse racing tracks in California, beginning in 2020. Te AG issued the title and summary on Jan. 21, clearing the way for signature gathering to qualify for the November 2020 ballot. In an unprecedented show of unity, the proposed initiative is supported by 18 of the state’s most powerful

and infuential tribal governments. Te tribes are committed to putting the question before the voters, and they have hired one of the state’s top frms to run the ballot campaign. Te measure will also allow tribes to operate roulette and dice games. Signature requirements are based on previous voter turnout, and for the 2020 ballot almost one million qualifed signatures will be needed in the weeks ahead to allow the measure to qualify for the ballot. Tat means well beyond one million are necessary in order to assure the required number of valid signatures are collected. Te tribal language allows sports wagering at brick and mortar casinos and racetracks and prohibits wagers at card rooms or on the Internet. Card rooms have vowed to fght the tribal initiative and support eforts in the California legislature to approve a competing measure that would in-

clude card rooms and online wagers. Te California Toroughbred Breeders Association has worked closely with the tribes to assure protections for consumers, underage gamblers, and California jobs, and to provide a safer, regulated environment and beneft the state. Allowing sports wagering to come out of the shadows will beneft Californians. Our eforts to move sports wagering preceded the U.S. Supreme Court decision in 2018, and we have worked closely with the gaming tribes. Lawmakers will have until late June to overcome the diverse gaming interests, including card rooms and major league sports, to qualify for the November ballot. Tis is certainly great news for California racing and could increase purses and increase track attendance. We will do all we can to help the tribal initiative and monitor all legislative eforts.

“Seabiscuit” Helps Children

One of the horses that played Seabiscuit in the 2003 movie has been retired from his duties as Santa Anita’s mascot and moved to the Square Peg Foundation in Half Moon Bay. Te 22-year-old gelding raced under the name of Fighting Furrari and has long had the barn name of Fred. Te Square Peg Foundation provides horses for emotional support for children with autism and other diagnoses. It is a certifed program with the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA) A docile and friendly gelding, Fred did a Fighting Furrari settles lot of close-up work in “Seabiscuit,” often in at the Square Peg ridden by Tobey Maguire, who played Foundation jockey Red Pollard. For years he has sported authentic Seabiscuit attire and visited with fans and children from a round pen in the Santa Anita infeld on weekends. He also often relaxed in the pen by the carriage horse stalls in the grandstand and was on display during the many weekend tours of the grounds. He appeared in several other movies and television shows and also ran with the winners of the Santa Anita Derby Day 5k. During the of season, Candace Coder-Chew, Santa Anita’s director of print and graphics and president of CARMA, cared for Fred at a local facility. Tere he served as a trail horse and participated in horse shows, winning many jumping competitions while ridden by Randi Pomrehn. “It is ftting that Fred will live out his days doing what he does best, taking care of young children,” said Coder-Chew. Fred, who got the role in Seabiscuit because of how much he looks like the famous horse, is a Kentucky-bred son of Momsfurrari—Fit for Fun, by Fighting Fit.

Sassyserb became the frst winner for California stallion Circumference when she won a state-bred maiden special weight event at Santa Anita Jan. 11. She went to the front early and defeated 11 rivals, winning the onemile turf race by 51⁄4 lengths in 1:36.20. Abel Cedillo piloted Sassyserb for trainer Anna Meah. DA Meah Racing and Next Wave Racing own the 3-year-old flly. John and Allegra Ernst bred Sassyserb, a daughter of the Rock Hard Ten mare Incredible Ten. ■ I’ll Have Another Gets First California Foals Champion I’ll Have Another had his frst two North American foals in early January. The frst, a flly, was dropped Jan. 14 at Rancho San Miguel, followed Jan. 15 by a flly born at Ballena Vista Farm. Jacqueline Bousquet and Dr. Jeaneen Metzler bred the frst flly, who is out of the winning mare Year of Light, by Event of the Year. The second, bred by Harold, Pamela, and Richard Tillema, is out of the Tribal Rule mare Jennifer’s Joy. Jennifer’s Joy is from the immediate family of millionaire California-bred Richard’s Boy, bred by Harold and Pamela Tillema. Richard’s Boy is a multiple stakes winner, grade 1-placed, and a

The flly, who is out of the winning Sundarban mare Sundar Creek, was foaled at Linda Madsen’s Milky Way Farm in Temecula. A champion 2-yearold and group 1 winner in France, Passion for Gold was also a stakes winner in England. He stood for fve years in Chile before moving to California. She is the dam of Mo Forza, who has won three consecutive stakes: the 2019 Qatar Twilight Derby (G2T), Hollywood Derby (G1T), and Mathis Brothers Mile Stakes (G2T). Four stakes were downgraded from grade 1 to grade 2 for 2020, three of them at Santa Anita. The Chandelier Stakes for 2-year-old fllies, Santa Anita Oaks for 3-year-old fllies, and Santa Anita Sprint Championship went from grade 1 to grade 2, as did the Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont Park. The Joe Hernandez Stakes at Santa Anita was upgraded from a grade 3 to grade 2 while the San Luis Rey Stakes and Kona Gold Stakes, also at Santa Anita, were downgraded from a grade 2 to grade 3. Golden Gate Fields lost the graded status of its All American Stakes, which was moved from grade 3 to listed status. The Unzip Me Stakes at Santa Anita and the Daisycutter Stakes at Del Mar were moved up to listed status. The American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association determines the graded stakes schedule each year.

Gary Sherlock, a popular trainer who most recently has trained California-bred stakes winners for Terry Lovingier’s Lovacres Ranch, died Dec. 29 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was just three days shy of his 74th birthday, having been born at 1:12 a.m. Jan. 1, 1946, in San Francisco. He was celebrated as the frst baby born that year in San Francisco. Growing up in Pleasanton, Sherlock spent his life in racing. In between stints as a trainer, he also acted as an insurance agent and a bloodstock agent. Sherlock initially trained Quarter Horses and won the 1977 Los Alamitos Super Derby with Azure Three and the 1980 Doc Severinsen Handicap with American Jet. Sherlock won the 2008 Santa Monica Handicap (G1), Humana Distaff Stakes (G1), and Ballerina Stakes (G1) with Kentucky-bred Intangaroo for Tom Grether Farms. He captured the Santa Monica (G2) again in 2016 with Cal-bred Lost Bus for Lovingier. Lost Bus was voted that year’s champion Cal-bred older female. For Lovingier, Tom London, and Eugene Zondlo, Sherlock trained Cal-bred Show It N Moe It to win the 2019 Spring Fever Stakes and 2017 California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Stakes. Show It N Moe It fnished second in the Betty Grable Stakes Nov. 17, 2019, with Sherlock as the trainer. The 4-year-old flly fnished third in the Kalookan Queen Stakes Jan. 12, now trained by Edwin Alvarez. Sometimes a co-owner of his trainees, Sherlock owned a piece of Kentucky-bred Uncle Lino with Tom Mansor and Purple Shamrock Racing. Uncle Lino won the 2016 California Chrome Stakes, fnished second in that year’s Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3) and third in the Santa Anita Derby (G1), and started in the Preakness Stakes (G1). Sherlock also trained Calbred Passing Game to win the 2011 Golden Nugget Stakes for Charles and Carol Bernhardt, Stan Chambers, and William MacNeil. Robert William Garvey Trainer R.W. (Bob) Garvey died Dec. 9 in Prescott Valley, Ariz., at age 91. During his career he trained throughout the country, but his equine exploits spanned many disciplines. Garvey was an excellent saddle bronc rider, placing in the top 15 in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rankings. He also worked in the movies as an actor and stuntman. Garvey left New York as a young man and traveled to Montana and Wyoming before settling in Arizona. He is survived by his life partner of 28 years, Rebecca Sue (Bond) Garvey, and his daughter, Salem Garvey. 10 YEARS AGO CARACORTADO, winner of the Feb. 13, 2010, Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita, was well-known not only for his racing prowess, but because of his name. Trainer Mike Machowsky bred the 3-year-old son of Cat Dreams—Mons Venus, by Maria’s Mon, in California and wanted to name him Scarface because he had a large cut on his face when he frst arrived at the track. The Jockey Club didn’t approve it, however, and so Machowsky went with Caracortado, a nearenough Spanish translation. Machowsky raced Caracortado with Blahut Racing, Donkey Island Racing, and Kagele Brothers. With Paul Atkinson up in the 11⁄16-mile Lewis, Caracortado sat in third early, took the lead in upper stretch, and drew off by 13⁄4 lengths over Dave in Dixie in 1:41.75.

25 YEARS AGO Husband and wife Gary and Diane Garber collaborated on California-bred DIANES HALO, who captured the La Canada Stakes (G2) Feb. 4, 1995, at Santa Anita. Gary bred the 4-year-old daughter of Sunny’s Halo—Olay Monique, by Drouilly, and the flly raced in Diane’s name. David Cross, who had trained Sunny’s Halo to win the 1983 Kentucky Derby (G1), also trained Dianes Halo. Ridden by Corey Nakatani, Dianes Halo trailed the feld early in the 11⁄8-mile La Canada, closing late to nip favored Twice the Vice by a head for the victory.

Dianes Halo stopped the timer in 1:49.35. Dianes Halo had previously scored in the 1994 CTBA Marian Stakes, and she earned a career total of $337,210.

Colorado King Jr.

50 YEARS AGO Trainer Charlie Whittingham and jockey Bill Shoemaker were always a powerful combination, and in the Santa Catalina Stakes Feb. 10, 1970, at Santa Anita they scored with California-bred COLORADO KING JR. E. E. (Buddy) Fogelson and his wife, actress Greer Garson, had both 3-year-old Colorado King Jr. and 4-year-old Ack Ack in Whittingham’s barn. Ack Ack would go on to a stellar Horse of the Year campaign in 1971. Colorado King Jr., over a sloppy track, rallied as the 23-10 favorite in the Santa Catalina to beat Ripple Mark by a nose in 1:25 for seven furlongs. Fogelson had purchased Colorado King Jr. for $30,000 at the 1968 California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Del Mar yearling sale. Rancho Jonata bred Colorado King Jr., a son of Colorado King—Love Factor, by Atavistic.

Mare and Foal Will Be a Draw on Ag Day

A mare and foal will again be the highlight of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association booth during California Agricultural Day (Ag Day) at the California Capitol. Te event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18, and the CTBA is making arrangements with a California breeder in the area to provide a mare and foal for the day. Te CTBA will represent breeders during Ag Day, ofering information to legislators on the vital role that the Toroughbred industry plays in the state’s agricultural economy. CTBA event coordinator Christy Chapman will be in attendance at the CTBA booth, along with several CTBA Board Members, to promote the sport and educate visitors on general horse facts and Toroughbred racing and breeding in California. Te day is held in conjunction with National Agricultural Day (March 24) and Week (March 22-28) as a way to recognize and celebrate the abundance provided by agriculture.

CAL-BRED CHAMPIONS TO BE CELEBRATED The California-bred champions of 2019 will be honored at the CTBA Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner. The activities will be held Feb. 25 at the Sheraton in San Gabriel. In addition, Sherwood Chillingworth and Lucky Pulpit will be inducted into the CTBA’s Hall of Fame. The business meeting will begin at 4 p.m., followed by a cocktail reception at 5 p.m. and the awards dinner at 6 p.m. The dinner will include the awards for California’s leading sires and Breeder of the Year, the 2019 Trainer of the Year, Broodmare of the Year, and Horse of the Year. CTFoundation A Visit to the National Sporting Library and Museum

Located 46 miles east of Washington, D.C., in the heart of Virginia’s hunt country, the National Sporting Library and Museum is a world-class research library and fne art museum, with impressive collections highlighting such country pursuits as the equestrian sports of polo, foxhunting, steeplechasing, and Toroughbred racing. It was my pleasure to meet with their curators and librarians to introduce the California Toroughbred Foundation and the Carleton F. Burke Memorial Library. Claudia P. Pfeifer, the George L. Ohrstrom Jr. head curator, went step-by-step through “Leading the Field,” stunning oil portraits of famous masters of foxhounds up and down the East Coast. Te backstories between the artist, Ellen Emmet Rand, and her subjects in the 1930s was riveting. Michelle Guzman, the George L. Ohrstrom Jr. head librarian, opened up the environmentally controlled stacks for us to see books of equestrian knowledge dating back to 1523. Te An image of William Cavendish, the frst Duke of Newcastle, in Methode et Invention Nouvelle de Dresser les Chevaux 400-year-old images of teeth, hooves, musculature, and lungs reveal the forward-thinking scientifc research of the horse centuries before modern imaging. I instantly recognized a rare book that CTF also owns: Methode et Invention Nouvelle de Dresser les Chevaux, by the Duke of Newcastle, William Cavendish. It was published in 1658 in Antwerp, where the Duke went into self-exile during the English Civil War. Tad Cofn, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in 1976, joined us and recounted his frst-hand knowledge and experience behind the personal diaries and essays of the famous riding coach Vladimir Littauer. It was an honor to be on the sacred ground of such a library and museum. I shared with them the volumes, trophies, and history of our Carleton F. Burke Library. turned at 4 as a gelding. In six 2019 starts, he won twice, ran second twice, and ran third once, all at the allowance optional claiming level. Wound Tight made his stakes debut and his frst 2020 start in the 11∕8-mile Turf Classic. He faced seven rivals, going of at 3-1, with Ward ’n Jerry the 12-10 favorite. A homebred for Larry and Marianne Williams, 7-year-old Ward ’n Jerry had run third in the 2017 Turf Classic to Ashleyluvssugar, who also was competing in this year’s edition. Most recently, Ward ’n Jerry had fnished third in the Hollywood Turf Cup (G2T). Abel Cedillo, riding Wound Tight for just the second time, let the gelding set the early pace. Tey toured the frst quarter-mile in :23.39 and a half-mile in :48.62. “Tis horse is very strong on the lead,” said Cedillo. “He never got tired.” Cono challenged Wound Tight on the backstretch without success. Ward ’n Jerry closed in the stretch, but Wound Tight had plenty left. He won by 31∕2 lengths in 1:48.24 over Ward ’n Jerry, with Cono third and Ashleyluvssugar fourth. “I thought it was going to be a little bit closer than that,” admitted Nelson, who grinned happily while accepting the trophy with his father also in the winner’s circle. “It’s a long process, and a win makes it all worthwhile.”

he path to Matt Nelson’s Wound Tight’s victory in the $200,000 Unusual Heat Turf Classic Stakes Presented by City National Bank Jan. 18 at Santa Anita began in the Del Mar winner’s circle.

Nelson knew Jorge Alvarez with trainer Bob Bafert’s barn. When Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) winner Coil won a race at Del Mar in 2012, Alvarez invited Nelson to get in the winner’s circle photo. “It was the frst time I’d been in the winner’s circle in probably 20 years,” Nelson said. Nelson had grown up near Santa Anita, attending Arcadia High School. After school, he would go to Santa Anita, able to get into the track free to catch the fnal race on the card. His father, Bob, owned the occasional horse and one day recom-

mended that Matt buy a mare, stakes-winning Cal-bred Bellsblade. “So I bought the mare and started the process,” Matt said. Nelson bred a couple of claimers out of Bellsblade, and then his father told him that Coil had gone to stud in California. “It was meant to be,” Matt said. Bellsblade foaled a colt by Coil March 20, 2015. Named Wound Tight, he began racing for Nelson at 3 in 2018, trained by Bob Hess Jr. Wound Tight won one of three races that year, breaking his maiden against state-bred competition, and re-

“Well,” Harris mused, “they do say to keep yourself in the best company and your horses in the worst. But he was in awfully good company today.” A 5-year-old gelding, Fashionably Fast (Lucky Pulpit—Fall Fashion, by Forestry) was in tremendous company for the six-furlong sprint. Among his competitors were four-time stakes winner and actual race favorite Baja Sur, dual stakes winner Lieutenant Dan, and stakes winners Brandothebartender and Oliver. Te race-day scratch of 2018 California Cup Derby winner Heck Yeah did little to dim the race’s considerable luster. 26

Te only horse ever to defeat the popular California-sired, Washington-bred Baja Sur was Fashionably Fast, who outran him in October at the Fresno fair in the $100,000 Harris Farms Stakes. Fashionably Fast proved that race was no fuke when he took the six-furlong Cal Cup Sprint by a neck, holding on over a fast-closing Lieutenant Dan. Jockey Tiago Pereira was aboard for the win, guiding Fashionably Fast home in 1:09.60.

“At about the eighth pole, I thought maybe we were in deep water,” Harris said. “But he kept going. You worry about what happens if someone gets to you when you’re on the lead, whether or not you’ll keep going. But he kept going.” It was the sixth win in 15 starts for Fashionably Fast, who also has three seconds and two thirds and earnings of $389,745. Te chestnut gelding won for the frst time in May 2018, then was stakes-placed before going to the sidelines from that December until June 2019. Troat surgery corrected any lingering issues for the fashy, blaze-faced runner, who returned to run ffth and second in allowance optional claiming events before beginning his fve-race winning streak. He took his owner’s namesake Harris Farms Stakes before adding the $98,000 Cary Grant Stakes at Del Mar in November. “Tis horse has done so much for us; how can you be disappointed in anything he does?” asked trainer Dean Pederson, who conditions Fashionably Fast for Harris and partners Per Antonsen and John Nicoletti. “We are just very thankful to be in this position and for the opportunity to have this horse. You can’t train for better owners.” Te dam, the graded stakes-placed Fall Fashion, still resides at Harris Farms and has four winners from six to race. She produced a leggy Clubhouse Ride flly last February and was bred to Smiling Tiger for 2020. Trainer Mike Puype claimed Stealthediamonds from Madden Racing and Michael Nentwig for $80,000 Oct. 27 on behalf of owners James and Ywachetta Driver. Te flly returned to win a Nov. 24 allowance optional claimer at Del Mar before the Turf Sprint. “I liked her because I knew these Cal-bred races would be here,” said Puype. “She made $90,000 today and she made $40,000 the other day. she’s free and clear, and a stakes winner to boot.” Te Drivers, who live in Irving, Texas, and Solana Beach, were unable to attend the race because they were en route to Arkansas. Tey have raced horses at Oaklawn Park for 40 years and spend the winter there. “We were very excited—she’s a really nice horse,” said Ywachetta by telephone the next day. “She’s the only horse Mike has for us right now. Tis was a nice claim. Mike is very thorough and very good. He’s real careful about picking out horses.” Kevin and Kim Nish bred Stealthediamonds in California in the name of their KMN Racing and campaigned her early in her career. Te 4-year-old flly is by Unusual Heat out of the Pure Prize mare No Better Terms. Te Nishes purchased No Better Terms for $52,000 at the 2012 Keeneland September yearling sale. She won one of fve starts, with two seconds. Te mare immediately proved a good producer: Her frst foal, Kimberlea K, by Indian Evening, won the 2017 Everett Nevin Stakes. Stealthediamonds is her second foal. No Better Terms has 2-yearold and 3-year-old fllies by Indian Evening and a yearling flly by Straight Fire. She was bred back to Straight Fire. Two distafers in the Turf Sprint came from the Nishes’ breeding program. Tey still own Apache Princess, winner of the 2019 Sweet Life Stakes (G3). Nick Alexander’s homebred Just Grazed Me, coming of back-to-back stakes victories, went of as the 1-2 favorite in the 51∕2-furlong race. Tey struck gold almost immediately with California-bred Queen Bee to You, whose most recent stakes victory came in the Jan. 11 La Canada Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita. St. Hilaire admits that he got lucky when he claimed Queen Bee to You from breeder Tommy Town Toroughbreds for $50,000 in late 2016. “To be honest, I didn’t know enough at the time—I was new to horse racing,” St. Hilaire said. “But I watched her frst race. She got stuck in behind horses, and she fnally got out with about a furlong to go and gave it everything she had. She just did not want to be behind other horses.”

Queen Bee to You is Vali’s only runner. “We did this on a lark just as buddies,” Vali said. “We said let’s throw in a couple grand and see wherever this goes.” It has gone to the winner’s circle eight times so far, encompassing all three major Southern California racetracks. With the La Canada, Queen Bee to You was winning her fourth stakes, following the

2019 Bayakoa Stakes (G3) and Bertrando Stakes at Los Alamitos and the Betty Grable Stakes at Del Mar. She has earned a total of $658,770, all but about $14,000 of that after the claim. Lerner took over the training of Queen Bee to You last June for Vali and St. Hilaire. Te latter now races in the stable name of An Equal Amount of Blueberries after a line in one of St. Hilaire’s favorite movies, “Casino.” “She’s just one of those gritty mares that want to win,” Lerner said. “She’s just all heart, and you gotta love horses like that.” Queen Bee to You faced fve rivals in the 11⁄16-mile La Canada. East Coast graded stakes winner Horologist went of as the 3-2 favorite, with Queen Bee to You the 2-1 second choice. Der Lu set the early fractions of :24.00 and :48.06. Queen Bee to You, ridden by Ruben Fuentes, raced close to the pace, forging to the lead in the fnal turn. Der Lu battled back, retaking the lead in the stretch. Queen Bee to You refused to accept defeat, re-rallying to score by a nose in 1:44.36. “I thought my horse was getting rank, but the pace was a little slow and that’s why she was pulling,” said Fuentes. “Once she made the lead, she relaxed real nice.” Tom and Debi Stull’s Tommy Town bred Queen Bee to You and initially raced her. Queen Bee to You is by Old Topper, who is pensioned at the Tommy Town acreage in Santa Ynez, out of the Touch Gold mare Silk Queen. A $27,000 purchase by Tommy Town at the 2009 Keeneland November sale, Silk Queen has had six foals to race, all winners.

hen he got the news in mid-December that he’d been selected Trainer of the Year for 2019 by the California Toroughbred Breeders Association, longtime Golden Gate Fields regular Bill Delia said he couldn’t have been happier. Now 73 and approaching 55 years on the racetrack, the popular Northern California conditioner is still going strong, confdent that it’s never too late to be your best. But the CTBA’s recognition

was something he never expected. “I couldn’t believe it; I was stunned,” he said of his selection when contacted recently at his Golden Gate Fields barn. “I’ve been in this game for a long time and never had anything like this before, so it is quite a thrill.” Delia gave a raspy-throated chuckle in response to the suggestion that it might have been a lifetime achievement award, then conceded that it was probably so. Not that he’s done, though, nor even close to it. “I love what I’m doing,” he said. “I’ll be doing it until the day I die.” Known afectionately as “Wild Bill”

around the Golden Gate backstretch, the New Jersey native is coming of another strong campaign in which he was once again among the leading trainers at the Bay Area oval. According to Equibase, Delia won 56 races on the year, with 100 second- or third-place fnishes from 328 starts, recording a 17% strike rate and a 48% in-the-money clip. His horses brought in just under $1 million in purse earnings at $953,734. Te fall stand at Golden Gate was particularly strong for Delia. He fnished second overall in victories with 17 from 62 starts, a 27% win rate, and $320,000 in purse earnings.

“We’ve had a tremendous year, and I’m doing well,” Delia said. “I’ve got some great horses, tremendous owners.” Delia began training in 1985 following a 20-year career in the saddle, but he’s hit his stride over the past four years. Since 2016, the Danville resident averaged 59 wins from 380 starters and purses of more than $975,000. In addition to acquiring some new owners, a big part of that recent success, he noted, has been keeping his strong training staf together. Delia, who estimates he won about 800 races as a jockey, is now closing in on 1,000 career training wins with 926, while nearing $16 million in lifetime earnings. Of course, good young horses keep trainers young. And in 2019, Delia unveiled an up-and-coming juvenile of the sort that keeps a horseman dreaming. Delia’s star horse is the speedy Bettor Trip Nick, a California-bred gelding he purchased privately in partnership with a pair of his longtime owners, Gary Oetman and Ray Pagano. Bettor Trip Nick, a son of Boat Trip out of the In Excess mare Bettor Knot, won four of fve starts in 2019, including the $63,800 Golden Nugget Stakes at six furlongs on Golden Gate’s Tapeta track Nov. 9. He won in gate-to-wire fashion in 1:09.35 at odds of 15-1. He was in command for jockey Catalino Martinez while clipping of exceptionally quick quarter-mile fractions of :21.53 and :44.30. Tey opened up by 31⁄2 lengths in the stretch and held of the Southern California invader Doc Tommy by a half-length. “I don’t know if any 2-year-old ran that fast in the whole country,” said an enthused Delia of the opening half-mile. “And he did it on the Tapeta.” Bettor Trip Nick then came back to win the $75,000 Gold Rush Stakes, stretching out to a mile Dec. 7, once again on the front end throughout with Martinez aboard. He held on doggedly to win by 11⁄4 lengths at odds of 4-5 after setting an even pace and pulling clear by 21⁄2 lengths in the lane. Delia and his partners purchased Bettor Trip Nick and two other 2-year-olds who have yet to start after scouting them at Randy Leighton’s Running Horse Equine Training Center near Gustine, Calif. Delia said his partners were enthusiastic about Bettor Trip Nick after watching him leading around the other horses in his group while galloping in the pasture. “We picked out the three we liked and came to a price, though I’m not going to say how much,” Delia said. “Te other two will be running soon, so we’re looking forward to that. I do a lot of business with Randy Leighton. He does a real good job training young horses, and I trust him.

We got a pretty good deal.” Delia maintains a barn of about 50 head, many that he owns in partnerships, and he notes that “nowadays, most of my horses are Cal-breds.” One of his best was a Cal-bred champion, Bai and Bai, the state’s 2006 3-yearold champion female. “I’m a bargain shopper,” said Delia. “I like the Northern California sale in Pleasanton. I got Bai and Bai out of that sale for $3,200.” A daughter of Falstaf—Bai Shun, by Fappiano, Bai and Bai was purchased for owner Harry Wilson. “I fgured there must have been something wrong with her,” said Delia. “But I remember getting her back to the barn and checking her out, couldn’t fnd anything wrong with her. She was little, but she was perfect. I told Harry, ‘I think we got a good one.’ ” Bai and Bai earned about $300,000 for Wilson and co-owner George V. Vinson before they sold the multiple stakes-winning and three-time graded stakesplaced flly to the Beverly Lewis Trust for $500,000. She went on to earn $724,983. Cal-breds top Delia’s list of all-time best horses. Delia’s biggest purse earner was multiple stakes winner Central Heat, a Calbred mare by Unusual Heat co-owned by Delia and Dana Rocheford. Tey purchased her privately for $12,000, and she raced for eight seasons through early 2018, winning 18 of 44 starts and earning $458,602. She was later sold as privately as a broodmare. At least two buyers purchased mares specifcally to breed to the stallion, though 2-year-olds were the strongest part of the sale. Craig Lewis trained Clubhouse Ride during a racing career that racked up $1,341,132 in earnings and back-to-back victories in the Californian Stakes (G2). Te stallion is already doing well at stud, being represented by the likes of stakes winners Warren’s Showtime and Club Aspen. THOROUGHBREDS BRING FAMILY TIES BY EMILY SHIELDS

he business partnership between Joy Seifert and Linda Madsen has a personal thread. Tey met when their children were showing dairy cattle more than 20 years ago and became fast friends, traveling up and down the state hauling both children and cows. Madsen’s oldest son later married Seifert’s youngest daughter, cementing the storybook friendship forever. “We became in-laws, then grandparents-in-law,” Seifert said. Almost a decade ago bloodstock agent and consultant Gayle Van Leer

mentioned to the friends that they should get involved with Toroughbreds. Madsen had plenty of equine experience in the Arabian industry. Seifert had some experience in racing, as her husband once had a racehorse-turned-broodmare, but “nothing that ever amounted to more than just a horse.” Seifert was dubious about getting into the industry; she and her family already own and operate a dairy farm in the Central Valley between Stockton and Sacramento with 2,500 cows. “It’s a lot of mouths to feed and keeps us pretty busy,” Seifert said. Van Leer found them a mare in Kentucky, and Madsen and Seifert were hooked.

“We got our mare and decided to breed her,” said Seifert. “Linda would go to Keeneland in January, and I would go in November— January is too cold for a California girl like me. We tried to buy one or two mares at each sale if we could fnd something that ft our program for almost 10 years.” Tey soon decided to expand their adventure by adding stallion ownership at Madsen’s Milky Way Farm in Temecula. Sundarban, by A.P. Indy out of the Storm Cat mare Desert Tigress, came frst. He has sired 42% winners, including nine-time winner Howdy, who earned $274,583, and 12-time winner Sheswildnfree. Te partners then imported a pair of stallions from Chile, Passion for Gold and Dosifcado. Passion for Gold is royally bred, being by Medaglia d’Oro and out of the New York graded stakes-winning Tunder Gulch mare C’Est L’ Amour, who was also grade 1-placed. Te mare’s stakes-winning half sister Passion Flower went on to produce Del Mar grade 2 winner Madeo. Passion for Gold was the champion 2-year-old and a group 1 winner in France, as well as a stakes winner in England, before his retirement with three wins in seven starts. Year Daja, was a grade 3 winner in Chile in 2015. His full sister, Dacita, a two-time champion in Chile, earned a total of $1,598,369 and a pair of grade 1 wins in the United States. Scat Daddy is well-known as the sire of unbeaten Triple Crown winner Justify. When Madsen traveled to Kentucky in the winter of 2019, she had the opportunity to see the grade 1-winning Unbridled’s Song stallion Graydar at Taylor Made Farm. Overseas parties had shown some interest in exporting him, but management of the Nicholasville, Ky., farm was keen on keeping him in the United States. Madsen thought the chance to bring him to California was too good to pass up, and brought him to California last summer. “We were so lucky to get Graydar here,” Seifert said. “We’re very fortunate. Linda has a fabulous contact base—she knows everybody.” Te immensely talented Graydar won fve of six starts and earned $841,560. He scored frst out in a Gulfstream Park maiden race at 3, then won the Donn Handicap (G1) in just his fourth start over the likes of Take Charge Indy and Flat Out. He went on a tear in 2013, frst with the Donn and then the $396,000 New Orleans Handicap (G2) at the Fair Grounds, defeating seven rivals as the favorite. He rolled to win the onemile, $400,000 Kelso Handicap (G2) in his fnal career start at Belmont Park. Te horse who was third that day, Hymn Book, was also a Donn winner. To date, Graydar has sired 116 winners from 184 starters, including grade 2-placed stakes winners Gray Magician, Gray Attempt, Wondrshegotthundr, and grade 3 winner Lombo. His total progeny earnings are more than $7.3 million, with his frst crop just turning 4 in January. His daughter

Dream Marie has won three straight races, including a January allowance optional claimer at Gulfstream Park. Seifert genuinely loves the sport and loves her horses, and she is quick to point out that her involvement wouldn’t have been as successful without Madsen, Van Leer, and Milky Way Farm’s manager Johnny Alvira. “Linda showed Arabians as a girl growing up,” Seifert said. “She comes from a horse background. And Gayle has been fabulous. She always goes to the sales with us, takes us to see the studs, and introduces us to everyone. She’s a truly great asset. Linda’s farm manager, Johnny, does a wonderful job with the horses and keeping everybody organized with the foaling and the breeding.” And they appreciate her, too. “Joy is the greatest person in the whole world,” Madsen said. “She’s doing this because she absolutely loves it. And we’re here in California for the long haul. We are totally dedicated to California racing and the CTBA. It’s been a difcult time, but we are seeing so many positive things happening now.” “It’s been delightful working with Joy and Linda,” Van Leer said. “Teir enthusiasm is contagious. It’s so much fun to have them around the sales.” Seifert is a partner in nearly 40 broodmares, though because of the work at the dairy farm, she can’t get down to Milky Way often. “But we talk about everything before we make any decisions,” she said. “Linda keeps me updated and sends everything to me.” And the family connection keeps growing. Seifert’s eldest daughter ultimately married a man who went to school with Linda’s youngest son. “And if it wasn’t for going to the fairs,” Seifert said, “we never would have met.”

hipping fever is just a general term to describe respiratory disease in horses after they have been transported—usually a sequel to stress and the resulting impact on the immune system that makes the horse more vulnerable to disease. Dr. Amy Johnson, with the large ani-

mal internal medicine department of the New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania, says that when we talk about shipping fever, we usually are referring to pleuropneumonia, which means infection of the horse’s lower airways and pleural cavity. “Tis is the space around the lungs, in the chest,” Johnson said. “Tis infection almost always causes the horse to have a fever and most frequently occurs after long-distance travel, hence the term shipping fever. “Tis disease is often due to a combination of factors, which include the stress of transport plus increased oppor-

tunity to aspirate particles (such as hay and dust) and bacteria into the airway as horses are going down the road in a van or trailer with the wind blowing and their noses in a hay bag.” In a traditional two-horse trailer, horses can also inhale dust particles while tied with their head over a manger as they eat hay. It is always important to monitor horses closely after a trip, taking temperature and looking for any signs of illness. “Early signs might include coughing or nasal discharge, decreased appetite or not wanting to eat anything, increased respiratory rate or efort, fever, etc.,” said Johnson. “If the horse is dull, unusually quiet, or eating less than normal, the owner should start checking temperature at least twice a day.” DIAGNOSIS

Usually, a veterinarian would suspect shipping fever just from clinical signs and examination of the horse. “Often we can hear some abnormal lung sounds with a stethoscope,” said Johnson. “Some veterinarians can also detect the presence of a fuid line—where fuid within the pleural cavity mutes the lung sounds. Tey might not be able to hear any of the lung sounds at the bottom of the chest but can hear them at the top of the chest and thus become suspicious that there might be fuid in the pleural cavity. “Te most accurate way to detect this would be to do an ultrasound. Ultrasound can be helpful and is often the best imaging modality. After listening to the lungs, the veterinarian might want to do an ultrasound scan, which would usually show any disease within the 50

However, if there is a lot of fuid accumulation in the chest, it will just look like a big whiteout on the radiograph. “If a horse comes into our hospital with lots of fuid buildup, we’ll start by doing the ultrasound and draining the chest. Once the fuid accumulation is gone, this is the point at which we might consider doing x-rays of the chest. Te types of portable x-ray machines that most veterinarians take out to the farm are not powerful enough, however, so the horse may have to go to a referral center for chest x-rays, if these images are considered necessary. “Te veterinarian might send a horse to a referral center if it was not responding as expected to antibiotic treatment, or if the treatment resolved the disease in the pleural cavity and the horse still seems sicker than you’d expect, or if the blood work didn’t improve back to normal. In these situations, you might get suspicious that there is something you
