Earlier that season, Gundaghia had won the Aprisa Handicap and Governor’s Cup Handicap at Fairplex Park. Robert Kieckhefer and John Goodman bred and owned Gundaghia, and Bob Baffert trained him for the Underwood. The gelding eventually won 19 races from 65 starts and earned $805,605.

Don B. scored a stakes double in December 1967 at Bay Meadows, both times ridden by Don Pierce. The California-bred frst won the San Mateo Stakes Dec. 2 and returned two weeks later to add the Bay Meadows Juvenile Championship. In the one-mile San Mateo, Don B. scored by 51⁄2 lengths over Prince Hemp. The 11⁄16-mile Juvenile Championship was similarly easy, with Don B.’s margin six lengths, this time over Royal Fols, who had fnished third in the San Mateo. Lester Holt trained the son of Fleet Nasrullah—Early Frames, by Prince John, for owner Donald B. Wood, who had bought the colt for $15,000 at the previous year’s California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Del Mar yearling sale. Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Taylor bred Don B. and consigned him to the sale. BLOODHORSE LIBRARY

Johnny Eves, a California-bred named for co-owner Sharon Hilliard’s father, captured the $250,000 Malibu Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Dec. 26, 2007. Ridden by David Flores, the gelding won by a length in 1:21.08 for seven furlongs. Hilliard and her husband, Carl Hilliard Jr., bred and owned Johnny Eves in the name of their Mooncoin. The Hilliards and their daughter, Debbie, watched the race from Hong Kong, where they were spending the holidays that year. “We had to explain to the people who heard us that we had just seen our horse win a big race in California,” said Carl. The late Warren Stute had initially trained Johnny Eves, a 3-year-old son of Skimming—Capote’s Halo, by Capote, and Jay Robbins trained him for the Malibu. Johnny Eves went on to earn a total of $581,120, with seven wins in 20 starts.

AWESOME DAZE DAZE OF YORE

BY TRACY GANTZ

A

Awesome Daze died in September at age 25, Jill Fischer noting that “he was buried at the ranch where he was born.” Te Fischers claimed Awesome Daze for $10,000 at Santa Anita Oct. 11, 2001. Te hard-knocking gelding was 9 years old, and he was making his 62nd start following a career that included several stakes wins and stakes placings. Robert Monroy, a graduate of the Ellsworth jockey school and a longtime exercise rider, bred Awesome Daze. He had purchased the Princely Native mare Lil Bit Awesome for $6,000 from Madera Toroughbreds at a 1988 2-year-old sale. Lil Bit Awesome won a couple of races, and Monroy turned down some big ofers for the flly. After she fnished racing, Monroy bred her to Lil Tyler, a son of Halo who stood his entire career at Madera. Like his son, Lil Tyler lived a long and full life at Madera. He was 31 when he died in 2014. Awesome Daze was foaled at Madera Jan. 29, 1992. Monroy flled several roles in getting his horse to the races—exercise rider, assistant trainer, and owner—though Fred Wilson was listed as the trainer when Awesome Daze made his frst start, at 2 in 1994. In the gelding’s third start, a maiden race at Del Mar Sept. 10, 1994, Awesome Daze won for Monroy with Laft Pincay Jr. in the saddle. Monroy ultimately lost his horse three years later for a $50,000 claim16

wesome Daze had plenty of awesome days as a retiree. Cal and Jill Fischer made sure of that. Te California-bred champion was foaled at their Madera Toroughbreds in Madera, and they claimed him in his fnal start so that he could live out his life where it began.

ing tag, but prior to that Awesome Daze earned about $230,000 for the owner/ breeder and won the 1996 Blaze O’Brien Stakes. Midway through 1997, trainer Darrell Vienna claimed Awesome Daze for owner David Milch. “Awesome Daze’s form looked good,” said Vienna. “Ten I looked at him, and he’s just such an attractive horse. And I’m kind of a sucker for horses that look good.” Vienna made a terrifc claim. Te gelding went on to win that season’s Phil D. Shepherd Stakes at Fairplex Park, Wells Fargo Bank California Cup Classic Handicap at Santa Anita, and the On Trust Handicap at Hollywood Park. At the end of the year, California Toroughbred Breeders Association members

voted Awesome Daze the 1997 champion older male. In 1998 Awesome Daze added the Valiant Pete Handicap at Santa Anita and fnished the year with a third in the Answer Do Stakes at Hollywood. After a lengthy layof, he returned in mid-2000 to the claiming ranks and performed admirably at that level for two more seasons while going through several ownership changes. Te day that Madera claimed Awesome Daze, he fnished a respectable third. With the exception of one start at Bay Meadows, Awesome Daze spent his entire career in Southern California. He compiled a record of 12 wins, eight seconds, and 10 thirds and career earnings of $652,435.

Editor’s Note: Emily Shields, a regular contributor to this magazine, is not only a photographer and journalist working in the racing industry for the last 15 years, but a lifelong, avid fan. She is a big believer in second careers for Toroughbreds, to the point where she now owns 4-year-old California-bred Slickrock, a gelded son of Torn Song who settled efortlessly into his new life and was giving rides to Shields’ 3-year-old twins just 21 days of the racetrack. Inspired by such a willing partner, Shields embraced the project of locating several other retired Cal-breds in their new careers.

I wasn’t even in the market for a horse, but I could tell he was special.” Elam and Cranky Jack reside in San Diego, where they train as hunter/ jumpers. “He has such an incredible work ethic and focus, which I’ve found to be pretty consistent for all the of-track Toroughbreds I’ve ridden,” Elam said. “He loves to jump. Te son of Te Pamplemousse hails from the female family of all-time great Cal-bred Tiznow. Te trailer tipped dangerously, the tongue going down behind the truck. “Luckily, we had two chains attached, so we pulled him all the way across the road and made it most of the way into the parking lot, just enough out of the road. I was freaking out because we were dragging a horse trailer on its tongue across the highway, it was 102 degrees, and the whole time ‘Moose’ just stood there. I didn’t even have to calm him down.” Dahl believes that frst traumatic experience cemented a bond with her new Toroughbred. “He does everything,” she said. “I put him in Western tack and ride on the trail, or we just go bareback. injured enough that they cannot go on to a second career. Helen Meredith’s United Pegasus Foundation takes in many of these horses, relying on, “grants, fundraising, and miracles” to keep its doors open. One of the 75 retirees living out their days on the San Jacinto ranch is Bench Light, a graded stakes-placed earner of $327,161. Te son of Benchmark is a half-brother to Cal-bred stakes winner, Crack Up. “Bench Light is such a character—he certainly is,” said Meredith. “We have these big water tanks, and he was digging a hole by it because he wanted to play in the water. He would sure make a mess. We fnally had to dig him a hole and grade it so that the water runs down into it. Now he is always muddy —always.” While Meredith, who has been in the racing industry her whole life and founded the organization in 1994, would love to have 200 horses under her care, it isn’t possible with the current state of donations. She also takes horses back even after their second careers end. “It’s not just after racing because what’s the point of rescuing if you are going to close the door on them?” she explained. “Once they can’t jump or compete anymore, sometimes the owners can’t aford two horses and bring them back to us. Te day before Bolt d’Oro fnished third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile as the 7-10 favorite, Ruis saddled One Fast Broad to win the $200,345 Golden State Juvenile Fillies.

Te seven-furlong dirt race drew three 2-year-old fllies who had already won stakes—favored Spiced Perfection, Show It N Moe It, and Ismelucky. One Fast Broad had broken her maiden on the dirt in her frst outing, at Del Mar, and then tried two open stakes races on the turf. She fnished second in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf and fourth in the Surfer Girl Stakes. “We knew she could run on the dirt,” said Ruis. “She has a full brother that won nearly a half-million dollars on the turf. So obviously you’re going to try her on the turf.” Tat full brother, Awesome Return, won the 2014 Snow Chief Stakes, Silky Sullivan Stakes, and Let It Ride Stakes, all on the turf, and his placings included a third in the 2014 Mathis Brothers Mile Stakes (G2T) on turf. Ruis said he bought One Fast Broad, Awesome Broad, and two full brothers privately. When the gate opened in the Juvenile Fillies, One Fast Broad, who had drawn the rail and had regular rider Corey Nakatani aboard, hopped at the start, resulting in her trailing the feld in ninth. “We were spotting six lengths going into that start,” said Ruis. “Corey never panicked and just stayed to task.” One Fast Broad had to make up ground by racing wide. Tat’s where they started Majestic Heat in 2015, and she has done so well on the surface that they never saw a need to switch her to dirt. Richard Mandella, who took over for Abrams with Majestic Heat, kept her on the grass until the $100,690 Betty Grable Stakes at Del Mar Nov. 12. “I’ve always been interested to run her on the dirt,” said Mandella. “She’s always worked well on it.” Te switch in surfaces didn’t faze Majestic Heat in the least. With Flavien Prat aboard, she prompted the pace while four wide down the backstretch.

Majestic Heat takes to the dirt with aplomb, wins the Betty Grable Stakes in frst main-track attempt

Two pairs of distafers battled through the early going. Bad Ju Ju and Late ’n Left were on the lead, while Majestic Heat kept pace with How About Zero. Majestic Heat tackled the leaders on the turn, sweeping by and then increasing her advantage throughout the stretch. Barbara Beatrice, winner of the California Distaf Handicap in her previous start, rallied to fnish second, but Majestic Heat defeated her by 31⁄4 lengths in 1:22.56 for seven furlongs. Late ’n Left held for third. Majestic Heat had returned from a long layof to win her second consecutive Solana Beach Stakes at Del Mar in August. Since then she had fnished sixth in the Rodeo Drive Stakes (G1T) and Goldikova Stakes (G2T), the latter only eight days before the Betty Grable. “Te last race, she kind of ran fat and

looked like she mailed it in,” said Mandella. “She came out of it and looked so good, I thought I’d always wanted to try her on the dirt and this was a good distance for her.” Prat called Majestic Heat “special,” adding, “You saw how she won here this summer after a year of on the turf. And now here she is running this well on the dirt. She’s just a good horse and a treat to ride.” Auerbach and Abrams bred Majestic Heat in California from the Ole’ mare Chi Chi Nette, who to the cover of Unusual Heat has also produced multiple stakes winner Mensa Heat and stakesplaced Real Heat. Auerbach owns 5-year-old Majestic Heat with Abrams’ Bardy Farm and Ron McCauley. Te mare has won six of 15 races and earned $410,329.

“You worry that they are going to lose their competitive spirits,” the conditioner said. “But he was working well and doing well.” Returned to his home state, California-bred B Squared got back on the winning track, taking the $100,690 California Flag Handicap over multiple stakes winner Richard’s Boy and favored Tribalist. Mario Gutierrez was up for O’Neill and Paul and Zillah Reddam’s Reddam Racing LLC. Paul Reddam bred and raced B Squared’s dam, Silar Rules. Te well-regarded Silar Rules, by Ten Most Wanted out of the graded stakes-winning mare Morning Meadow, never won, but she did run in two stakes races as a juvenile. She has gone on to be an extraordinarily successful broodmare, having produced four winners from four to race. Her third foal, Ralis, won the $350,000 Hopeful Stakes (G1) as a 2-year-old, and went on to run in 10 graded stakes. B Squared is her fourth foal, and she has yearling and weanling fllies as well.

Paul and Zillah Reddam, third and fourth right, are quite familiar with the Santa Anita winner’s circle

All of Silar Rules’ ofspring are by Reddam’s stallion Square Eddie. Coming a year after Ralis, B Squared had big shoes to fll. He rose to the challenge well, breaking his maiden frst out at Santa Anita and winning the $100,450 Silky Sullivan Stakes on the turf at Golden Gate Fields in his third start. He was graded stakesplaced shortly thereafter, running second in the $98,000 Afrmed Stakes (G3) and third in the $200,690 Los Alamitos Derby (G2). Tose eforts prompted the road trip. Te California Flag, named for the Cal-bred millionaire and Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner who was particularly fond of Santa Anita’s hillside turf course, was B Squared’s frst race in the Golden State since July. He made the most of it, stalking the pace between horses down the hill, then turning three-wide into the lane before getting up and stopping the clock in 1:11.38 for the about 61⁄2-furlong distance down the hill. Gold Rush Dancer, the Longacres Mile Handicap (G3) winner, fnished ffth while California Diamond, champion Cal-bred 2-year-old male of 2016, ran seventh. “I thought Mario rode (B Squared) great,” Reddam said after the race. “He put him in a great spot, was tracking the speed. He let him fnd his footing in the lane and then let him go. He had a good turn of foot.” But Reddam wasn’t sure whether the return to grass or the backing up in distance to one turn made the diference. “So now the question is, is it the shortening or the surface, since we did the double switch? We’ll fnd out I guess. We’ll sprint on the dirt and see if routing was what was making him not as efective as he could be.” Versatile B Squared has run well on turf and dirt, sprinting and going two turns. “I’m so proud of him,” O’Neill said. “He ran dynamite to come back as he did.”

Cal-bred Miss Sunset betters Cal-based Chalon in Keeneland’s grade 2 Lexus Raven Run Stakes

W

hile the Golden State Series gave California-bred Miss Sunset a great opportunity at her home track of Santa Anita, her connections decided to take a shot at a graded race at Keeneland. Te gamble paid of as Miss Sunset defeated nine tough challengers in the $250,000 Lexus Raven Run Stakes (G2) Oct. 21. “We had to send her back on Monday, but we didn’t know who would be in the race until Wednesday,” said co-owner Phil Lebherz. “You’re racing the big girls. It

50

cost $20,000 to send her, so you’re basically making a $20,000 bet.” Lebherz, in the name of Premier Toroughbreds, owns Miss Sunset and her dam, the Trippi mare Tuscan Sunset, with Alan Klein. Te partners raced millionaire Smiling Tiger, who is having success as a frst-crop California sire. Tuscan Sunset now has a yearling and a weanling by Smiling Tiger. “We decided since we own the mare and have two babies on the ground that it was worth it for the value of the rest of the family,” said Lebherz. Mersad Metanovic bought Tuscan Sunset at the 2013 Keeneland November mixed sale for $36,000 for Lebherz and Klein. She was carrying Miss Sunset, a daughter of Into Mischief, at the time. Trainer Jef Bonde entered Miss Sunset in the $100,000 California Distaf Handicap at Santa Anita Oct. 14. Te 3-year-

old flly has demonstrated talent on both dirt and turf. She won the $91,935 Sweet Life Stakes over the same hillside turf course sprint distance as the California Distaf, as well as the $100,225 Campanile Stakes at a mile on turf at Golden Gate Fields and two dirt stakes at Del Mar. Te Raven Run pitted 3-year-old fllies on the dirt at seven furlongs. Julien Leparoux, Keeneland’s leading rider, took over from Mike Smith, who had commitments in California. Lebherz said that Smith kindly telephoned Leparoux to give him some pointers, and their collaboration paid of. Another California invader, Chalon, set the early pace, while Leparoux kept Miss Sunset in second. He sat chilly when a couple of other rivals snuck up the inside, and then he asked her on the turn. Miss Sunset responded immediately, challenging Chalon and collaring her deep in the stretch to post a half-length victory in 1:22.21. “As she came down the stretch, she showed a lot of heart, and that’s what you want to see,” said Lebherz, who was in New York on business and had to urge his flly on from a television screen. “She always has that extra that you need at the end.” Lebherz said that they plan to breed Tuscan Sunset to Mastery in Kentucky next year and then bring her back to California to produce a Cal-bred before returning to Smiling Tiger. Miss Sunset might next try grade 1 black type in the La Brea Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita.

Kathryn Hegadus’ work ethic and knowledge set the standard at Sue Greene’s Woodbridge Farm

Although Hegadus was born hearing impaired, she has “never used that as a tool for getting ahead in life,” Greene said. Hegadus works on her family’s Modesto ranch, farming almonds and peaches. She put herself through school at Fresno State by working at Woodbridge and various veterinary clinics with an eye toward becoming a veterinarian. “I met her as a vet tech,” Greene said. “She is now currently full-time daytime employed at Pioneer Equine Hospital, working Monday through Friday in the breeding barns. She also rotated through as the on-call tech for colic surgeries; there were days when I know she hadn’t been to bed.” When Green and Hegadus met, Hegadus was doing some foaling shifts at Harris Farms in the evenings. Greene started her on the Woodbridge sales team, but Hegadus enjoyed the foaling aspect too much and Greene wasn’t about to say no. “I don’t like staying up all night,” Greene said. “So any time someone ofers to help with the foaling, I say, ‘Yes.’ ” Last season 53 mares foaled out at the farm, and the upcoming season looks to have more than 60. During the 2017 season Hegadus helped at Woodbridge exclusively. Te local Modesto Junior College equine veterinary class sends students to spend a few nights a week at Woodbridge, where Hegadus has proved herself invaluable yet again. “She’s a wonderful, amazing teacher,” Greene said. “She has

patience; she is knowledgeable. She’s the best foaling help I’ve ever had.” Hegadus showed horses and raced barrels growing up, and she is now getting together her very own broodmare band. “She acquired a mare two years ago that didn’t sell and brought her home,” Greene said. “Kathryn sold her frst colt, a yearling by Cyclotron, in October at the Barretts sale. To celebrate, we got her an ice cream cake that read, ‘Congratulations on selling your frst horse!’ ” Hegadus’ broodmare band has grown to four. She has weanlings by, or mares in foal to, Mr. Big, Smiling Tiger, Haynesfeld, and Desert Code. “She’s so enthusiastic,” Greene added. “We were watching the Keeneland sale and drooling. Maybe someday.” Greene is grateful to have someone as multi-faceted as Hegadus on the team. “I can’t say enough wonderful things about how I admire her work ethic and what she has brought to the table for us,” Greene said. “I’ve never had a problem with her. I have some quirky things we do when we are foaling that other people may or may not do, and she never questioned that. She’s just been an outstanding student as far as learning and stepping up to the plate and being available to help.”

Kathryn Hegadus’s job as the lead nighttime foaling person at Woodbridge Farm is just one of the many ways she flls her time. Farm owner Sue Greene said, “She is probably one of the most hard-working young people I know.” With all that Hegadus has taken on, it’s a wonder that she even has time to sleep.

RUIS RACING STABLES BOLTS TOWARD THE FUTURE

M

ickey “Mick” Ruis doesn’t want to be “just another horseman” in California. He has his sights set on playing at the same level as Hall of Famer Bob Bafert, with the twist that Ruis owns and trains all his own horses. With grade 1 winners Union Strike and Bolt d’Oro in the barn, Ruis is already on his way. With two new stallions and 25 broodmares in California, he looks to add even more to his Golden State footprint. Ruis sports a classic “pulled up by his own bootstraps” story. He left high school just before graduating to work at a construction company, quickly rising through the ranks despite his age.

He sold his frst company for $2.5 million with a fve-year non-compete clause, and thought that would be enough money to get into horse racing. “Te most expensive horse I had at the time was $10,000,” Ruis said. “Tat’s just the kind of stock we had.” After the fve years Ruis was $1 million in debt. He had some minor success, such as when homebred California-bred Wendy’s On to Me defeated Bafert’s heavy favorite Del Mar Miss in the $70,000 Warren’s Toroughbreds Stakes at 35-1 in 2005. But Ruis wanted to be better, and knew he could do better. “I thought, ‘Wow, if only I had some more ammunition,’ ” Ruis recalled. He went back into construction, namely, the

Ruis’ Racing’s four-leaf clover is more a symbol for skill meeting opportunity than for luck

scafolding industry. When American Scafolding sold for $78 million, Ruis felt he would be able to invest to his satisfaction. He spent just over $3 million in two years to purchase bloodstock, including a $375,000 Union Rags flly and a $630,000 Medaglia d’Oro colt. Te flly, Union Strike, broke her maiden in the $300,690 Del Mar Debutante Stakes (gr. I), defeating American Pharoah’s full sister, American Cleopatra, and subsequent Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) winner Champagne Room. At the time, Ruis’ daughter Shelbe was training the stable’s runners because Ruis himself was being stubborn about re-taking the required trainer’s test.

I’m buying mares in Kentucky, but I’m going to be foaling and breeding back in California.” — Mick Ruis

“I had a trainer’s license before, 10 years ago,” Ruis explained. “I didn’t see why I had to take it again. Eventually, they made me and I passed with a 98.” To kick of the 2017 season, Union Strike won the $79,290 Santa Paula Stakes. “Tat was a fantastic race,” Ruis said. “We shipped her over to Churchill Downs for the Eight Belles on Derby day, and that was tough. A bad start, then she was fying but she lost by a nose in a photo fnish. Ten there was an inquiry.” Te seasonal goal for Union Strike was the one-mile, $687,000 Acorn Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park. She stumbled badly “to her face” and lost both right shoes. “She grabbed her quarter and still fnished ffth while trying 56

hard,” said Ruis. “We tried to get her ready for the Test (G1), but she had a little injury that just needed nature to heal it.” Since returning to San Luis Rey Downs, Union Strike has been swimming and relaxing, and she is scheduled to return in the La Brea Stakes (gr. I) at Santa Anita. She has earned $322,160 in seven starts. When Union Strike left the barn to recover, the juvenile Medaglia d’Oro colt was just gearing up. Bolt d’Oro, out of the A.P. Indy mare Globe Trot, broke his maiden frst out on Aug. 5 at Del Mar. He then reeled of consecutive grade 1 wins in the Del Mar Futurity and the FrontRunner Stakes, both worth $301,380. Te latter came by 73⁄4 lengths, stamping Bolt d’Oro as the favorite for the $1,840,000 Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I) at Del Mar. Bolt d’Oro bobbled at the break of the Juvenile, ending up third last in a feld of 12, and ran fve or six wide on both turns to fnish third, with Corey Nakatani riding. “It was very disappointing,” Ruis said, “but that’s horse racing. He ate up his dinner like he didn’t run, and the next morning you wouldn’t have known he raced. I wouldn’t trade horses with anyone going into the 3-year-old campaign. He breathes a diferent air than the other horses.” While Bolt d’Oro may have come up short in the Breeders’ Cup, another Ruis runner eased the sting with a stakes victory of her own. One Fast Broad, a Cal-bred daughter of Decarchy—Awesome Broad, by Mr. Broad Blade, won the $200,345 Golden State Juvenile Fillies by a length. She had previously broken her maiden one day before Bolt d’Oro did and ran second in the $103,105 Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf at 46-1 odds. Ruis is looking forward to running all three of his stakes stars in California next year. “Tis is my state, my hometown,” he said. “Santa Anita gives me stalls, so I support them. I’ve found it’s best to help those that help you.” Among his ranch in Montana, mares in Kentucky, and a host of racehorses and yearlings, Ruis has 78 horses in his stead. He will be standing two horses at Tommy Town Toroughbreds in 2018, where he is moving 25 mares to bolster his California breeding operation. One new stud is $494,781-earner War Envoy, a son of War Front out of the winning Elusive Quality mare La Conseillante. Te other is Saburo, who raced only twice by but is a son of Medaglia d’Oro out of the stakes-placed Lemon Drop Kid mare Kid Majic. “I’m buying mares in Kentucky,” Ruis said, “but I’m going to be foaling and breeding back in California.” Family remains most important to Ruis. Te stable’s runners are often named after his wife, Wendy, while Shelbe has been working in the barn since she turned 14. “She ran the barn for me for a week while I was in New York,” Ruis said. “It has worked out really well.” With a horse to start on the Triple Crown trail and so much to look forward to in the Golden State, more could go Ruis’ way soon.

n most horses a bruised sole occurs from the foot hitting a sharp, hard surface—such as stepping on a sharp rock or trotting in rocky terrain. With racehorses, however, track surfaces are more forgiving footing, and these horses are not likely to encounter sharp rocks.

Conformation can also play a role as horses with too much heel and no toe tend to bruise more in the toe area

“When racehorse trainers talk about bruised soles, they are referring to horses that sufer too much concussion on the track while running,” said Dr. Amy Rucker, a veterinarian with a special interest in hoof health and care. Toroughbreds can have problems with low heels and thin soles. “Tey get more bruising just because they don’t have enough sole mass,” said Rucker. “Te repeated concussion from racing on some tracks can sometimes be enough to bruise a thin sole.”

Te feet can change as well. “When these horses are young and still on the farm, their foot and frog may be quite healthy,” said Rucker. “Ten after they enter a racing career, the foot may become quite diferent due to all the concussion and pressure on those feet. I don’t see very many racehorses in my practice, but I see quite a few retired racehorses in their second career.”

“Bone bruising, in the coffn bone, may also occur occasionally,” said Norman. “Tis takes longer to heal. A mild sole bruise doesn’t cause much lameness and goes away on its own. A deeper bruise will cause lameness. I have seen a lot of red spots in certain areas when I trim away the outer, dead part of the sole, and these are signs of an earlier bruise. When you start trimming and suddenly see some redness, you know it was a bruise. “If it’s been 30 to 35 days since the foot was trimmed, you don’t really see anything on that dead, outer surface of the sole until you trim it again. enough that it doesn’t really cause pain, but you know it’s there—and on down the line it could cause a problem.” On a horse with toed-in conformation, the tendency would be for the horse to sufer bruising on the opposite side of the foot, on the outside. Bruising will occur wherever there’s the most strain and stress/concussion on that foot. “I see this pretty commonly, and I’ve also seen redness at the point of the frog,” said Norman. “Tat’s where the point of the cofn bone is located, directly above it. Sometimes there will be a rim of redness on that part of the sole that emulates the cofn bone.” A mild bruise doesn’t make a horse lame, but some of the tiny blood vessels were broken by the concussion or trauma. “Tis doesn’t create enough of a hematoma—and doesn’t abscess to create pressure from a pus pocket—to make the foot very sore,” said Norman. “It might be enough, however, to afect a horse’s performance. “Te horse might not show lameness walking or trotting, but the rider may feel that the horse is a little of. Te horse is not striding out like he did earlier. “To try to fgure out why that horse isn’t running as well as he should, we start at the foot and work up. Tis will take hoof testers to try to pinpoint the problem, checking for any tenderness over various areas of the foot. Most of the time it will be at the inside quarter. “It might even be close to the nail holes, which could mean the nail placement was too close to the sensitive inner part of the foot. Tis can create some pressure and bruising, as well.” Occasionally, a more severe bruise might occur if the horse stepped on something hard, like a rock or gravel when walking back and forth from the barn to the track. Bruises can also happen when a horse loses a shoe. If the foot is sore and tender, a heel bruise makes the horse put more weight on the toe, favoring the sore heel. When

standing, he might try to bear weight on the toe, resting the foot with the knee forward to decrease heel pressure. A horse with a bruise in the toe area will land on the heel and try to get the weight of the foot as soon as possible to have less pressure on the toe area.

“Te location of the bruise gives us an idea whether the bruise was due to trauma (from something the horse stepped on),” said Norman, “or due to concussion because of the horse’s conformation and the continual impact resulting from that conformation. We try to determine how it happened and why it happened. “Shoes that are not placed correctly on the foot can also create sole pressure and result in a bruise. Incorrect shoeing, poor conformation, terrain, speed, environment, etc. can all play a role. “A wet foot bruises easier than a dry one. Even a good foot, when it is waterlogged and soft, will be at risk.”

Our goal is to kill and prevent the spread of these health hazards in horses and Equine farms throughout the US and Canada. Ef1 is a full service facility geared towards individual care for each and every equine guest. We have a 5/8 mile “state of the art training track,” banked turns, an uphill gallop, and custom staring gate.

Speed and repeated concussion are two of the main reasons for sole bruising in Thoroughbred race horses

66

Broken blood vessels from a bruise are manifested by a tell-tale red spot

PHOTOS COURTESY OF STEVE NORMAN

To keep from making a bruise worse, that part of the foot needs to be protected, so that area won’t continue to be traumatized. “We can often do that with proper shoeing,” said Norman. A severe bruise is more serious and needs more attention. “Depending on how lame the horse is and how tender the area we pinpoint as a bruise, we may soak the foot if we think there might be an abscess forming,” said Norman. “Tis can help bring the abscess to a head so we can open and drain it. A lot of bruises don’t become an abscess, but if they do, we need to deal with the abscess. “Ten we have to protect it while the area heals with some type of shoe that will keep it from sufering more trauma. American Pharoah ran in special shoes—an aluminum plate that covered half of his foot. Tis helped keep his feet from bruising. “If you have a horse that bruised, covering that area eliminates the concussion from ground forces and allows the sole time to heal. Whether it’s in the toe or in the quarter or the frog, we’ll have to support that part of the foot so the concussion won’t afect that area—no impact on that tender spot.”

Covering a bruise with special shoes will eliminate the concussion and help in healing

CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED ❙ December 2017 ❙ www.ctba.com

If the horse is still lame, training and racing will have to stop for a while, halting all concussion. Tat horse will need time of from work, along with a hoof pad to provide some cushion. “You want the horse to be comfortable while standing and moving around during that time of rest, to help heal the foot as quickly as possible,” said Norman. Bone bruising will take the longest to heal. “It seems like there’s an increasing number of horses that sufer deeper bruises, in the cofn bone or even farther up in the pastern or the lower end of the cannon bone,” said Norman. “Te horse shows lameness, but the farrier and veterinarian can’t fnd it until they do a bone scan and see those areas of infammation. On the bone scan, those places light up like fre. Tat’s a hidden bruise, and we often wonder how it happens. But it probably starts with concussion and conformation—and too much speed at a young age. “Running on uneven ground, traveling on rocky terrain, etc. isn’t usually a factor for racehorses. But there is still a concussion factor because the track surfaces are made as smooth as possible for speed. Speed puts more stress on everything.”

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through November 12, 2017.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
