Welcome to the December Burbage News! Burbage News Editors We always find December to be a month of reflection on what the Burbage News has achieved during the year and what can be done to improve it for you. All residents receiving the Burbage News are invited to e-mail or telephone the editors with any suggestions they may have for future issues

For the third year running we are hosting the Burbage News Festive Celebration on Sunday 9th December at 7:00 pm with the Phoenix Brass Band and the Signing Choir once again giving us an enjoyable evening of music, plus the mulled wine and Mince pies. And to a friend who likes Amaretto in his mulled wine - maybe a surprise.

During the past year the Burbage News was delighted to be able to team up with BRATS and put on two excellent musical evenings. Due to the success of these we are already planning the next event which will take place in April 2013, so look out for the adverts early next year.

Although you will always see us trying to get new volunteers to assist with the magazine, the biggest thanks need to go out to the volunteer distributors who do a great job delivering the Burbage News to all households in the Burbage parish in ALL weathers for you the readers.

This time of year, especially towards the end of the month, we often see a change for the worse in the weather. So our appeal now is to ask that everyone keeps an eye on their neighbours making sure that any residents of senior years or those who are fragile in their health are well and looked after. So all that is left for Gavin & me to do is to wish everyone in Burbage a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. See you in 2013

Poppy Appeal

Thank you Susan Goalby

Dear Burbage News Editors Eggs thrown The Poppy Appeal in Burbage, Easton Royal, Cadley and Wootton Rivers has this year raised £3597.72, an excellent result. Thank you very much to all those who so generously gave their time and money to this Appeal Many thanks Richard Lovell Poppy Appeal Organiser Quiz night I'd just like to say a big "thank you" for your support on 22nd October in making the quiz night such a great success. I was thrilled with the turnout and am really grateful that you made the effort.

Dear Editors Thank you for your e-mails (Burbage Online) which are very informative and helpful. One item that may be of interest to your readers, I am a resident in Seymour Court and would like to report an incident we believe happened on Halloween or the recent Firework celebrations. Eggs being thrown at windows of elderly people, fortunately the resident there did not notice or hear the commotion until family visited and saw the damage. I do feel parents should be aware of what the children are up to, as this could have more serious outcomes if allowed to continue. Many thanks Details withheld

As a result, we raised a shade over £530!!!! - a terrific result and monies that will be put to serious use in Sudan. I hope you enjoyed the evening and look forward to seeing you again in the near future. Thanks once again. Allan

Keeping you in the dark A plea…. For the good residents of Burbage to wear something reflective, or highly visible, or carry a torch when they are out walking, running or cycling the village streets at dawn, dusk, or at night time.

5 Please could walkers and runners run into (towards) the traffic, again, so that they can be easily seen! On more than one occasion, I have had to swerve quickly to avoid someone or a group of people dressed in dark clothing, with nothing to identify their presence until it’s almost too late. It would be awful for this village to experience an injury or worse for lack of some visible clothing, or a torch. www.gov.uk/rules-pedestrians Details withheld The annual spring daffodils

Dear Editor Spring will not be so colourful for Burbage next year. Thinking back over the last 20 years and how Burbage residents enjoyed helping to plant the daffodils on the bank at the north end of the village to mark the occasion when the bypass was finished, why has the present Parish Council felt it not their duty to have the grass cut on the bank twice during the growing season, as it has been in the past? Whilst it is appreciated that the bank belongs to Wiltshire Council – I know the Parish Council only own the recreation ground and part of Seymour Pond, I have written to the Parish Council asking if the bank could be cut and the only answer (verbal) has been that it will be the opening line. Burbage Neighbourhood Watch Winter nights are drawing in and this brings with it associated problems for equine owners. As a police force we are receiving more complaints from horse riders and car drivers alike, regarding horses on the roads. For most horse owners this is a must and just a way of life that we and our animals have had to get used to, negotiating traffic, road workers and obstructions that pop up when we least expect. As a horse owner, I cannot stress the importance of making yourself and your horse seen while on the roads be it riding or leading. At all times of day it is important to be seen from dawn to dusk. You should be lighting yourself and your horse up to be visible from a way off to other road users. Hi-viz gear is reasonably priced and easily available. Think outside the box and look at hi-viz work wear or cycling equipment that is readily available as sometimes this can be adapted for equine use at a cheaper price. Equine suppliers now offer tabards with 'please pass wide and slow' or 'think horse' which will give motorists an idea of what you are asking before the need to give hand signals. Hi-viz leg wraps, quarter sheets and tail guard lights should be worn by your horse. When riding on the highway please remember to ride single file and when riding and leading ensure the horse on lead is wearing a bridle and is on the inside of you and your mount. Wiltshire police are here to help and advise. If we can assist please let us know. Pewsey NPT wish you a happy and safe winter. Burbage Signing Choir Jean Bierschenk We have started this season well and are practising hard. We performed at Hungerford Mothers Union in October and were very warmly received, with a generous donation to our charity. Our next event is Coffee N Browse on 30th November at the Church Hall. Please try and come and see us We will then be at the Christmas Fair at the Village Hall on 9th December. This should be fun and I’m sure will be well worth attending, just to see our efforts. We are going to do something i saw The Liverpool Signing Choir do at the Olympic closing ceremony. If they can do it so can Burbage!!! Anymore information can be obtained from Jean 810451 or Cynthia 810026.

Sam the Christmas Horse (& Elf!) Ginette Stewart Hi Folks This is Sam the Christmas Horse Here! Some of you may have seen the article last month from my Rider explaining what we are doing for charity this year! After having spent a few happy years plodding round the village and becoming more festive each year we have decided to bring something extra to Burbage. I love seeing the children when I'm all dressed up, and hearing the wonderful and flattering comments from the adults too! So this year we are going all out and I am going to be fully kitted out in bells and all sorts whilst my Rider, Ginette, is dressing as an elf Together we are going to be doing a Christmas Card Delivery Service in the village to raise money for charity! As this is our first year doing this we have picked a very local charity, the Burbage DeFib Fund The card delivery service will take place over the weekend of the 15th/16th December. The village will be split into sections with deliveries happening in certain areas at certain times; they will be hand delivered to your door! The map of delivery times will be available at the Christmas Tree Fair at Burbage Church on Saturday 8th December, and a copy will be in the White Hart. If you wish to have a card delivered by us we ask for a starting donation of £1. You can drop a card off at the White Hart in the drop box or at the Burbage Christmas Tree Sale, or alternatively contact my rider (See details below!) You can also choose to have a card with my wonderful picture on the front delivered instead; this is a starting donation of £1.50 Over the next few weeks I am going to be going round the village, adding a Christmas item to my outfit each week until the Christmas Tree Sale weekend. To find out what I am up to or to contact us, please find me on: Twitter: @Samahani1 Facebook: Sam The-Burbage Christmas-Horse (Samahani Stewart) Phone: 01672 812008

& Toddler Group .

Our community coffee morning was a great success and we would like to thank everybody who came along to support us, and those who baked some gorgeous cakes, which were enjoyed by all. It was a pleasure to see some new faces in the group and of course to catch up with our regulars! Our last session for this year will be on the 18th of December. We will be having some festive snacks and making Christmas tree decorations. Hopefully we shall have a special guest dressed in red who will be delivering presents to the children. Do come and join us and get into the Christmas spirit!! Our sessions are held every Tuesday during term time from 9.30am to 10.30am at Burbage Village Hall. It is for babies and pre-school children aged 0-5 and their parents or carers. Each session loosely follows a similar pattern with crafts and free play time, followed by a snack then more `Mat time` involving singing, music and sometimes puppets. We have a wide variety of toys ranging from dressing up, wooden kitchen and soft play to a small climbing frame. It is a friendly group which is a fun place for children .For the grown ups there is fresh coffee, tea, cakes, a chance to meet other carers with young children and chat (and even the possibility of a sit down !) Dog poop - The hazards Katie & Kelly The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified pet waste as a dangerous pollutant in the same category as toxic chemicals and oil Dog poop can spread parasites including hookworms, ringworms, tapeworms and Salmonella. When infected dog poop comes into contact with your lawn, the poop will eventually "disappear", but the parasite eggs can linger for years! When a human or animal comes into contact with that soil through everyday activities like walking barefoot, gardening or playing, they risk infection from those eggs ... even years after the poop is gone! Dog Poop is teeming with E. Coli and other harmful bacteria including faecal coliform bacteria, which causes serious kidney disorders, intestinal illness, cramps and diarrhoea in humans. (There are 23 million faecal coliform bacteria in a single gram of Dog Poop!) Dog poop often contains roundworm larvae, which cause blindness. If a human ingests a roundworm larva, it can migrate through the body causing disease to the brain, lungs, kidneys, liver, heart or eyes. So when people (especially children) touch soil, dog toys or anything that has been in contact with dog poop and then touch their mouths, they can become infected These are just a few very disturbing facts about just how dirty Dog Poop actually is. I would like to think that the majority of us wouldn’t dream of not washing our hands after going to the toilet or disposing of our children’s nappies in a hygienic manner, because we are brought up knowing that poop IS dirty. So it just amazes me that people think it is acceptable to leave their dogs’ poop all over our pavements, for villagers and our children (and in fact other people’s dogs) to walk through and spread all the above germs around. How long will it be before our village sees serious consequences of this irresponsible behaviour?! We are hoping to get some posters showing some of these health risks up around the village very soon.

www.savernaketeam.org.uk Savernake Team Letter December 2012

Michael McHugh, Team Rector 01672 870779 mtmch@hotmail.com

Having been the Team Rector for what seems an eternity now, it is time to begin to share the load with my fellows. This is what I would like to focus on as we approach Christmas. I gambled on Saturday. I know I shouldn’t and it is a bad example for clergy. It shows a lack of trust in God’s ability to provide. But, what the heck, I am human! Cynicism about humanity’s ability to provide might be more justifiable. The trigger was a conversation in the Village Shop about Christmas. Many people are finding the idea of the expense daunting. Gone is the expectation of the days of my childhood when the Christmas stocking had an orange, a small chocolate bar, a few nuts and possibly one or two ‘Woolies’ cheap gifts. Under the tree was often a single present. Of course by buying a Lottery Ticket I am putting the Lord to the test by expecting him to give me a winning ticket against the odds. I have not lapsed now for about five years! Given that others will be finding finances tight this Christmas, I have been trying to find ways to cheer people up. I was inspired in prayer recently to do something and I have not followed it through. This is very serious as school children have missed out because I have not done a simple charitable act. However, I need help to put this in place. So.....

Wanted A Gazebo [or two] with sides. Ring Michael to donate on 01672 870779 Having been inspired to improve other people’s lives, I urge you to seek inspiration to do so yourself as this winter promises to be particularly fierce. It does mean doing things yourself, not badgering others to do things. The command to ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ does not have to lie within Christian confines. Happy Christmas,

Michael

21 A fund raising project to improve food security for poor and vulnerable families in South Sudan reached its target last week when children at Burbage School handed over a cheque for £250 after collecting silver coins in a sweeties tube. The Building Bridges Sudan initiative, based at All Saints Church, has so far raised almost £30,000 for the world’s newest state. This has been supported by the village in a series of money raising events over the past three years. The Bishop of Sherborne, Graham Kings, will lead a Sudan Sunday service at All Saints on December 2 when a certificate from Tearfund, the charity administering the Building Bridges project, will be presented in recognition of the £10,000 raised for the food security programme. At the same time, a new project for an £11,000 health centre in Kiri will be launched for a country with some of the worst health and development indicators in the world. To get this new fund off the ground, several events are planned including a quiz night, a sales stall at the Christmas tree sale, a supper and talk with Olympic medallist David Hemery and a folk concert, both in February. Later in March Bishop Hilary from Yei, where most of the Building Bridges projects are based, will visit All Saints to talk about the difference this fund raising has made to the lives of southern Sudanese communities.

Missions supported by All Saints December - Mission Aviation Fellowship. This organisation, whose strap line is "Flying for Life", is a worldwide interdenominational Christian organisation, based in Folkestone in Kent. It operates over 135 light aircraft, in more than 30 countries, transporting patients, relief teams, medical supplies and Christian workers in around 280 daily flights, in the world's remotest regions and places of deepest human need - places where flying is not a luxury, but a lifeline. MAF is a registered charity in the UK, supported to a large extent by giving of people concerned that others should have a better life physically and spiritually. A heavily subsidised donation can also be made by those transported, where appropriate. An up to date magazine is usually to be found at the back of the church, but further information can be obtained from Castle Hill Avenue, Folkestone, CT20 2TN, telephone 0845 850 95505, web site http://www.maf.uk.org/, e-mail supporter.relations@maf-uik.org. 22 We are in our 18th year. The event started when the forestry commission stopped their Christmas tree sales in Savernake Forest which coincided with the Burbage church being in a sorry state and needing all fund raising ideas to save the building. The Forestry Commission allowed us to harvest the growing left over trees in the forest and the sale started. First one in 1995. Once all the Savernake trees were used we continued with the sale, using local tree suppliers. We were selling 400 trees a year and raising funds. In the past 3 years we have grown the sale to 600 trees and we are hoping for a new record in 2012. We made historically £3-£4k p.a, then record sums £6k in 2007, £7k - 08, £10k -09, £11.5k 2011. Nearly 2000 visitors last year, 50 volunteers run the weekend. 500 sausages and unknown glasses of mulled wine are distributed! We introduced tree recycling 3 years ago and now recycle trees to garden mulch on the second Saturday in January and more and more people are taking part in this, recycling nearly 200 trees. Trees are grown for us locally in Hampshire. Spruces are cut the night before the sale 9 miles away so they are exceptionally fresh. Other fir trees are grown in Hampshire and Somerset. We have a full range of trees for sale, both traditional Spruces and non needle drop Fir trees. All are excellent quality and freshly cut with no non-British imported trees. Sizes range from 3ft to 15ft with a tree for everyone, even some in pots! Prices start from below £20 and are very competitive compared with other Christmas tree outlets. We keep the biggest tree every year for the church! We are happy to deliver trees if customers cannot collect and will take an order over the phone or email! New for this year is the cake stall courtesy of the cake baking volunteers of Burbage; the Scouts stall serving hot soup; live music on Saturday as a band will be playing to accompany the sale! We will have the biggest ever number of Christmas market stalls for all your Christmas shopping! Father Christmas will be in attendance, last year he gave out 9 tins of quality street! Free hot chestnuts cooking, free tea and coffee, Burbage sausages and hot

The Reverend Linda Dytham clocks up 15 years with Haine & Smith Linda Dytham, has been a resident in Burbage for 24 years. In that time, she has made many friends and has been involved in many groups and activities in the village, having brought up her family of three children here. She is perhaps most well-known as being an Ordained Minister and our Associate Priest in the Savernake Team for the past seven years. However, Linda has ‘many strings to her bow’ and has worked for Haine & Smith Opticians for the past 15 years, becoming an invaluable member of the Head Office team in Pewsey. Senior Partner Barry Smith said, “Linda is an excellent employee. She is a joy to work with and has an incredible capacity to deal with a very large workload.” “I have very much enjoyed my 15 years with Haine & Smith,” commented Linda. “We are like one big family, and being at Head Office I come into contact with everyone, even though we are 160+ staff across three counties. Barry and the Partners have been so supportive of me, especially during my three years of training to become an ordained priest, and since, as I attempt to incorporate my faith and ministry into the church, community and workplace.”

Sat & Sun December 8th & 9th The Christmas Tree Fayre is an important event for many reasons, but before it can take place we need volunteers. Yep! That’s what this is - an appeal for Help. We will have the flower and table decorations again this year and I hope to have the continued support of our regulars. But we need additional help, not only to make them but also to sell them over the actual weekend. Several new people came on the Thursday last year and discovered the art of putting the table decorations together, but maybe more importantly the fun of working together. I look forward to your new and different ideas. We have the church centre for Thursday & Friday (6th & 7th December) , with a variety of greenery, ribbons and accessories. Please come along and join in the fun of making them together (refreshments always available!) or just collect the “ingredients” and return with the finished article – whichever suits you best. Over the weekend we need your help for an hour or two (5 or 6 if you like!) to ‘man’ the stalls. So, this is an appeal to both males and females. Some of our most talented arrangers are men. Maybe you enjoy another craft; share that with us too. In the past we have had handmade candles, tree decorations, needlecrafts and much more. Please donate your time and/or talents. Don’t wait to be asked but step forward with a smile – we really do have a good time and no talent goes to waste! Why not come along and see for yourself. A rota / timetable will be on the board at the back of the church. Please add your name as many times as you would like.

Meet Your Community - Ken & Heather Moore On dull days like today here in Burbage I expect some of us remember nice sunny places we have visited while we were on holiday and wish we were there again! I suspect for Ken Moore this feeling must kick in big time, because he was born in Tobago and spent his childhood years in Barbados and in The West Indies. It must have been a childhood paradise, with the sea, sand and sunshine. I don’t think it was quite the luxury vision of the West Indies we see on the holiday adverts. Ken and the family weren’t living there in luxury. His father was working there as a missionary. Unfortunately the family returned to this country when he was 15 years old to suffer the English weather like the rest of us! He told me that his return visit to The West Indies last year brought back many happy memories. The Moore family then returned to this country and settled in Bristol. He continued his education at Bristol Grammar School until 1961 when he left school he decided to go into the banking profession for the National Provincial Bank, as it was called then. Ken worked in a number of branches of the bank including Winchester, before he was posted to the Marlborough Branch, which brought

him, Heather and the family to Burbage to live. He continued working there until he took early retirement in 1993 because of ill health. Ken and Heather first met while Ken was working at Oxford. They were married at James Street Church in 1970. They now have three boys, all of whom have now ‘flown the nest’ and are married. Their oldest son Trevor, with his wife Mary now lives near Reading and they have three children; Hannah, Leam and Eloise. Geoffrey, their second son, is married, to Jess and has four children; Abi, Alex, Adam and Ashley now living in Swindon. Their youngest son Graham’s wife is Usha and they now live at Chiseldon with their daughter, Esther. I think Ken and Heather are typical doting grandparents! Heather went to Chayney Girls School, Oxford and then trained as a primary school teacher at the Lady SpencerChurchill Teacher Training College. Her first teaching job was at Thayne Primary School. She then worked at the Burbage playgroup while the boys were younger. As they grew up she returned to school teaching at Covingham Primary School in Swindon. Now she, like Ken, has joined the happy band of the retired.

38 They are both regularly attending our local church, being very involved in their life and activities. For many years they led the young people’s group along with Teresa Williams, who many folk will remember. I remember visiting their house on a Saturday evening and found it had been taken over with what seemed like hundreds of teenagers! Heather was also a teacher in the Sunday School for part of this time as well. They have also been members of the choir at various special events such as the annual carol service. Heather plays the piano or organ from time to time and they regularly read or lead prayers at the services. Ken has also been a member of The Parochial Church Council for quite a few years. He is also prayer coordinator and lets other church members know if people would like some prayers if somebody is ill or bereaved. They are also involved in local community activities. Ken has used his accounting skills helping various groups locally, such as the British Legion, and groups elsewhere with their accounting and other financial responsibilities. He is also a regular taxi driver for old folks going to Seymour Court as well as a member of the Pewsey Male Voice Choir. One of Ken’s other interesting hobbies is stamp collecting and he will often show his friends his collection. As well as this he collects used stamps which are sorted and sold to raise money for the Church’s Sudan Project. Heather uses her musical skills also playing the organ for a number of other churches in the area at their services. She is also

a member of The Vale of Pewsey Consort, a recorder group based in Pewsey which takes part in concerts in the area from time to time. Long may Ken and Heather continue to be part of our local church and community. Meet Your Community article by John Guy

Good Companions Bernard Patterson On a very wet Wednesday afternoon an exceptionally large audience of members, guests and several new members assembled in the Village Hall at 2pm 21st November to hear Colin Younger. Colin, a local archivist and historian, visiting The Club for the third time, gave a very informative address on “A Journey through Burbage – Part 2” His talk, illustrated with many old photographs, and enlightened many newer residents about the reason for unusual configuration of the road through Wolf Hall Farm. Local Highway authorities on either side of the farm could not agree who was responsible for surfacing the section through the farm yard. At one time road users had to open four gates, pass through an arch and negotiate cattle in the yard on an un-adopted road. The dispute was resolved after many years in 1952. East Sands and the growth of the village was fully explained while teas were served. Next meeting: The Annual Christmas Luncheon 12.30 for 1pm in the Village Hall Wednesday 12th December. Burbage Parish Council www.burbage-pc.org.uk From the Chairman’s desk “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE” Sunday 11th November was a crisp, cold, blue sky morning. The Clerk and I had the honour of laying a wreath at All Saints’ Church on behalf of the Parish Council as part of the Remembrance Day service. Although the 141 people who attended the service would have family & friends to remember, we gathered to pay tribute to those men from Burbage who gave their lives in the two world wars, 17 in the 1st World War and 12 in the 2nd World War. Best Kept Village competition 2012 Mr Alan Cannon of the Campaign for Rural England presented the Council with Certificates for achieving 1st place in the Kennet round of the Best Kept Village competition and 3rd place in the Wiltshire County round. Mr Cannon also presented the Council with a cheque for £25, the 3rd place prize. It was emphasised by Mr Cannon that its not a competition for the prettiest village but best kept. The state of the village footpaths were highlighted for praise and a big thank you has to be given to the Village Maintenance team for that. Well the level of achievement has now been laid down, so the Parish Council will try to surpass this award next year. Village Maintenance: The Village Maintenance sub-committee is working on a variety of matters as highlighted in last months’ article and will at the December monthly Parish Council meeting put forward its current project list of works to be carried out in the parish. Neighbourhood Plan:

The working party have had their first meeting and more will take place over the coming months. When there is any appropriate information, the Parish Council will ensure that the residents are informed. Precept 2013 – 2014: The Finance sub committee reported to the full Parish Council meeting and due to time constraints it was agreed to arrange an extraordinary meeting of the full Council just to debate the draft 2013 – 2014 Parish precept. (At the time of submitting this article the meeting had not taken place). The Precept has to be submitted to Wiltshire Council no later than 21st January 2013. If any of the public are interested in the debate on the Precept, the extra-ordinary meeting and the December 2012 and January 2013 monthly Parish Council meetings are open to the public. Do you have any issues within the Parish that you would like to be actioned? Contact myself or the Clerk with any issues, good or bad by e-mail chairman@burbage-pc.org.uk or clerk@burbage-pc.org.uk On behalf of Burbage Parish Council I would like to wish all the residents of the Parish a very Merry Christmas and New Year, and to my fellow councillors the same warm greeting and a big thank you for what we have achieved as a team during 2012. Hopefully 2013 will see more parish improvements that we can all be proud of. Keith Amiss Chairman Burbage Parish Council.

Footpaths

A Greeting from Stuart

Geoff Hill

Councillor Stuart Wheeler

I am pleased to be able to report that following an approach by the Parish Council Network Rail has agreed to install boarding over the track where the footpath from Ram Alley to the canal tow path crosses the railway line. This will allow a much safer passage across the line, particularly for large groups. The bad news is that they haven’t said when they will do it but we will leave it a few months and then chase.

I am very happy to take this opportunity of wishing you all a very Happy Christmas, and hopefully, a prosperous New Year.

Unfortunately Wiltshire Council footpath s ec tion m is s ed the windo w of opportunity this autumn to install the bridge over the stream on the footpath from Ram Alley to Wharf Bridge. It is unlikely now that they will be able to do the work it until next spring at the earliest as the ground needs to be reasonably dry to allow delivery of the bridge itself. I would like to thank three farmers, namely Mrs Curnick of South Grove farm, Mr Lemon of Suddene Park farm, Mr Rowland of Bowden farm, and Mr and Mrs Witheford of Witheford Stables for allowing (and indeed in some instances carrying out) footpath clearance, signage improvement and improvement to stiles on the land that they manage. Their cooperation is greatly appreciated and has allowed the footpath network to be improved. I think on the whole the footpath network is now in a pretty good state (apart from the mud about which we have little control!) but if anybody comes across a problem please let me know.

I thought village celebrations for the Golden Jubilee, master minded by Mike Vardy, were absolutely splendid. Burbage got its picture in Country Life! I was pleased that the Pewsey Area Board of which I am a member, was able to give a small amount of financial help. We also helped the Scout and Guide Group which has gone from strength to strength this year with a couple of grants to buy much needed equipment. I managed to arrange with Highways officers that while the A 338 was being resurfaced some loads of scalpings were delivered to improve the parking in front of the Scout Hut. I am very pleased that as the responsible Cabinet member on the Council we have kept all our libraries and leisure centres open and continued the mobile library service. I am very excited that at the end of October the Council approved proposals that will allow the redevelopment of the Leisure Centre in Pewsey to a full service campus with modernized and improved facilities. If you have any problems or questions please contact me on 01672 810285 or at stuart.wheeler@wiltshire.gov.uk

The Village Hall Management Committee would like to wish all Villagers a very Merry Christmas.

On October 18th Julia Russett treated us to a demonstration of how to make a Christmas wreath and, by a few cunning changes, to turn it into a table decoration. Everyone was riveted- the room was silent! Julia made it all look so easy and has certainly inspired lots of us to have a go at making our own. She also wowed us with a glimpse of some of the goodies one can buy to add to decorations; there’s quite an Aladdin’s cave out there! If there is an explosion of door wreaths in Burbage at Christmas, this will be the reason! I’m sure some ladies may well want to go along to her flower club – I certainly shall.

Replacement for the wall in front of the Village Hall – Work is scheduled to be completed in November so hopefully when you are reading this the new birdsmouth fence is already in place. Next job will be to tidy up the tarmac around the fence area to make the area look much neater. Request, especially from the Chairman – Help!! I would love to hear from anyone who would consider helping me with writing up the minutes. Any amount of assistance in this area would be gratefully received. Please make contact if you would like to know what this would entail. Post name is Minute Secretary. Moveable Goal posts on Barn meadow- We are trying to find out who bought or who owns the goal posts on Barn Meadow. We wish to make sure that these are safe to remain on Barn Meadow for use by children, and if we do not hear from anyone may feel it is necessary to remove them for safety reasons. These are the smaller goal posts and not the ones permanently fixed into the ground and used by the adult league teams. I hope that you have enjoyed the Market and Meets in 2012. To all those who have helped to make these a success I wish to say a special Thank you. The Markets will continue in 2013, with the hall booked, for every second Saturday, except January. We will continue with our regular stallholders and will encourage new ones to join. All Burbage and surrounding villages’ ventures are particularly welcome. We have many new ideas for special events for 2013 to add more interest and to involve all age groups. If you have any suggestions then I would love to hear from you.

Raffle prizes were won by Di Acheson, June Vallis and Anne Beesley. The November meeting was the annual skittles evening at the British Legion, expertly, as always, organised by Elaine Dutton. Adam Patterson and Charlie Palmer provided a seamlessly efficient service of setting up the skittles and returning balls, and joined in, too. Months of preparation were put to the test! In the first half players bowled 3 balls each in turn, the joint winners receiving a chocolate bar. At half time savoury finger food was served, prepared by the committee, and the evening concluded with the sudden death play off, won by reigning champion June Eales, with Adam the gallant runner-up. Raffle prizes were also won, by Pat Nicholls and Ethel Simpson. December 20th at 7.30 in the Church Centre sees the Christmas candlelight supper for members. Full report in the New Year!
