Welcome to the June edition

In this issue

.

www.burbage-village.org.uk

Since I have a little bit more space available to me than last month, I’d better not waste it! So much is happening in June all I can say is - you’ll read all about it inside! To help, we’ve included an index. Due to the amount of page juggling that goes on from first draft to final print, an index has thus far not been a good idea - purely from an editors point of view! Well this is another full issue and I have received a last-minute request for a oneliner to be added, so it’s in below and that has finished this bit for another month. Take care - see you next time! G Party in the Palace. Although we have a licensed bar, please refrain from bringing alcohol to the event

PICNIC AT THE PALACE We will be serving afternoon tea and cakes as part of the Jubilee Celebrations and we need your help

Invitation to all 12-19yrs in Burbage. Come to a meeting of the Burbage Youth Council on Friday 1st June at 6:30pm to be held at the Burbage & Easton Royal British Legion club. Over the coming months the Burbage Youth Council want to start reviewing projects that will benefit all 12-19yr olds in Burbage. Therefore if you have any suggestions that you would like to be considered, be it a skate park, a BMX track, a youth club, or whatever, come and have your say. Let’s make this happen not only now but for the future.

Please bake, decorate and deliver your cupcakes to the Church Centre between 10 and 11.30 am Saturday, 2nd June where they will be judged at midday. We would then like to serve the cakes for afternoon tea. If you would like to bake but don’t want to compete we would love to have your cakes to serve as well. I’m also looking for volunteers to help serve tea. We had a fantastic response for the Royal Wedding celebrations last year. If you can help this year, either baking or serving, please let me know ( 810949 or email helen.colling@btinternet.com Thank you so much. Helen Colling

Healthy Diet Rules #5 Petra Gericke Rule – Use plenty of healthy fats “Healthy fats”: Omega 3 & 6 oil in a 2:1 ratio Why: The body needs ESSENTIAL fatty acids (EFAs) to “drive”. Every cell, tissue, gland and organ is dependent upon the presence of EFAs. The body can’t produce them; they must come from an outside source. Omega 3/6/9 oil, made with health in mind, provides the body with all EFAs. Do not heat it (the least damaging fat for frying is butter). Use plenty as it is a foundation and not a supplement. Health benefits: Reduces inflammation and joint pain, increases bone strength, has positive influences on HDL, LDL, total cholesterol, blood pressure … Toxic: In a ‘profit and long shelf life’ driven industry, fats such as regular oils are subject to high heat (e.g. 245C for 1 hour) and aren’t protected from light and air. Heat, light and oxygen changes fat molecules from natural and healthy, to unnatural and toxic. The body can’t break them down for usage and has to store them instead. Don't let worry kill you off - let the Church help.

BURBAGE PRIMARY SCHOOL’S VERY OWN ‘PUSS IN BOOTS’ On 2nd May Burbage Primary School’s Years 3 and 4 put on a fine production of ‘Puss In Boots’. The children’s teachers, Mrs McIntosh and Mr Patterson, are to be congratulated, as the cast learnt all their lines and song lyrics within 2 weeks of rehearsing. Georgina was a brilliant Puss In Boots with Shahla, playing Puss’ master, both super actors. They were joined by narrators, a Royal family, Courtiers, animals, harvesters and a scary ogre. It was apparent just how much all of the children really enjoyed being involved with this play and were absolutely fabulous on stage. Mrs Cardy, Head Teacher, congratulated all the children and staff involved for such a brilliant production - Well done.

www.savernaketeam.org.uk Savernake Team Letter June 2012 Dear Everybody It is the year of Jubilee!! A fabulous celebration of certain anniversaries is how a Jubilee is defined. In modern times, along with length of marriage, we celebrate events such as birthdays, attaining voting age, graduating, baptism and confirmation, and this year we celebrate 60 years of our Queen’s reign. These turning points are important to our lives, but if you look back into the Old Testament book of Leviticus, chapter 25, we see that our God set into motion His Jubilee. The origin of royal jubilees goes back thousands of years, with the first historical records of a Royal Jubilee taking place 3000 years before Christ in Egypt. The early Pharaohs of Egypt held national celebrations every 30 years of rulership. Jubilee is also a constant theme throughout the Bible. The word ‘jubilee’ stems from the Hebrew word ‘Yobel’, which refers to the ram or ram’s horn with which jubilee years were proclaimed. In Leviticus it states that such a horn or trumpet is to be blown on the tenth day of the seventh month after the lapse of ‘seven Sabbaths of years’ (49 years) as a proclamation of liberty throughout the land of the tribes of Israel. The year of jubilee was a consecrated year of ‘Sabbath-rest’ and liberty. During this year all debts were cancelled, lands were restored to their original owners and family members were restored to one another- (food for thought!) The year of jubilee was also central to the ministry of Jesus. In the Gospel of Luke Jesus makes the claim to the fulfilment of Isaiah’s prophecy in Isaiah 61:1–2. Jesus states that he has come to ‘proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour’ This is the year of jubilee. And so this year 2012 is also the year of Jubilee!! Have times changed this last 60 years? The Queen has seen changes in technology, populations, family life and

22 culture to name but a few. But God is still God. God is still our Ruler. Kingdoms rise and fall, empires come and go but our God goes on forever and ever. I would like to thank all of you who have put so much effort and enthusiasm into the celebrations here and I hope and pray that whatever celebrations you will be involved in it will certainly be a great time of celebration and thanksgiving! With every blessing Linda Dytham

Burbage Church Mid Week Meeting On the first Wednesday of each month we meet as a church family to worship God and hear a talk. This week we were introduced to Rev Philip Bromiley, a young vicar who came to share his work with a Christian organisation called Fresh Expressions. Philip is married to Anna, and they have 4 children. He is the Team Rector for the Oldbury Benefice and is living in Cherhill. He shared his passion for mission and evangelism in this area; he was really energetic and full of enthusiasm and encouraged us to be likewise. Philip shared with us verses from Matthew’s Gospel, chapter 14, v 22 to 35, with a particular emphasis on verses 27 through to 30. This was given as a challenge and encouragement for us to get out of our ‘boat’, the church, and get involved in our communities much more. Interestingly, these same passages were given to us as a church body at the Renewal Day with Lord Carey. To consolidate his wonderful teaching, he brought a friend from his parish who shared a remarkable story of how God had changed her life. We listened raptly to Naomi Handford-Jones as she unfolded an amazing journey of healing. Her story seemed almost too good to be true – except it was! It brought home to us, on a cold, blowy May night that God is alive and working. Val Nelson-Piercy May 2012 Philip’s talk can be heard via: www.savernaketeam.org.uk and go to the listen again pages, 2nd May, Mid Week Meeting. Re-thinking Christianity – A ‘spring cleaning’ day with Lord George Carey Spring Cleaning – not dusting and polishing literally, but Lord Carey, with years of experience as a vicar in Durham and later Bishop and Archbishop, encouraged us when he spent the day in Burbage on 5th May to ‘spring clean’ – to let the light in on areas of our church life which need refreshing (including those visiting from churches elsewhere) - by looking at ourselves, at our communities and at Jesus. There is only space here to mention some of the points Lord Carey made; you can hear the whole of his talks on the church website. It’s very easy listening! Taking the Bible story of the storm on the lake (Matthew ch.14 v. 22-33), we saw how Jesus went off to pray alone at the end of a busy day – an example for us. But in the storm, it was actually the disciples who felt ‘alone’ until Jesus rejoined them. In the same way Christians are counter-cultural and a minority, something which can either make us tougher or leave us feeling inadequate. Lord Carey also pointed out that the disciples were together in the boat - the Bible was written to communities - and explored what this can mean in a twenty first century setting. He described the church as a gathering of people who love Jesus, who want to spend time in his presence and to be used in his service – priorities which can be lost for so many reasons. The church should be Godly, purposeful and integrated in the community, aware of the needs of different groupings in it and also that many people have a ‘subliminal spirituality’ and are supportive though they may not identify themselves as church members. We explored ways of sharing our experience of God with friends and neighbours who feel like this, both as we interact individually with them and where our corporate worship is concerned, being sensitive to what will best help everyone to come near to God. Rounding off his theme, Lord Carey reminded us that, when, like today, society wandered away from God’s good news in the time of John Wesley, he saw possibilities, not problems, he was willing to face the cost of witnessing, he knew that prayer had to undergird his work and that people needed to be taught the faith. Finally, Lord Carey commented on All Saints saying we were in good shape, a healthy church with a strongly committed core and open to new ideas. The 80 or so people who attended the day went home with a great deal to think about. Joy Guy May 2012

Wildlife Watching Andrew Dawes, BBC NHU Radio researcher/producer It’s been a strange spring so far in terms of weather. The hot sunshine in late March replaced by the wettest April for decades, it was cold too. But did you notice something else which was strange this April? If you did, you were not alone. Many birdwatchers reported that the skies over the United Kingdom were empty of summer bird migrants; they just hadn’t arrived and were late. So what had happened? The timing of bird migration is linked with optimum breeding success. It is still something of a mystery how they do this, how they know when to arrive; how to synchronise breeding to an abundant food supply when the young hatch. In normal years there is a steady passage of birds through Europe from mid-March. However this year low pressure weather systems developed throughout April producing cold northerly airflows which persisted for days. Migrant birds were trapped by this airflow in Europe, as well as unseasonal torrential rain in. A brief respite came around April 14th when a weak high pressure system allowed an influx of migrants; I heard my first nightingale of the year in Kent on the 15th. But then it went quiet again and by the end of April torrential rain and high winds affected much of Britain. A huge influx of birds arrived on UK shores around May 1st as southerly winds finally returned allowing migrants to cross the Channel I witnessed one of these influx movements on May 4th when I visited Catcott Nature Reserve in Somerset. Many thousands of hirundines (swallows and martins) had arrived in the South West that day. I arrived on a cold grey evening, but I was greeted by the heart-warming sight of literally thousands of swallows. So many it was impossible to count them accurately

but I guess there were between 4-6,000 swallows, plus another few thousand martins and swifts. They were everywhere, like huge flying ants. Seeing swallows in such numbers in the UK is more usual in the autumn as they gather to migrate south. It is very unusual in spring. It is also unusual to see them perching on a tree in such numbers that it looked like black confetti.

As I sat in the hide looking through the binoculars it was like observing one of those speeded up street scenes in films when everyone is rushing about. Many birds however were drinking, which they do on the wing, a sign they were possibly dehydrated. For over an hour I became mesmerised by all this activity. All the time more swallows were arriving, until at 7.55pm, as if a switch had been flicked, they flew off en mass and headed north. After 2 hours listening to thousands of chattering swallows I was left with just the memory of an astonishing sight. The silence was deafening. So spare a thought for the swallows visiting your barns this summer, they’ve come a long way, and it’s been a struggle to get here. You can read more on Andrew’s Blog: http://wessexreiver.blogspot.com Keep up with Andrew’s fascinating day by getting his regular Tweets on Twitter: www.twitter.com@Wessex_Reiver

Meet Your Community – Tony and Marion Parmenter 'I could tell you lots of stories that you couldn’t print,' Tony told me soon after I arrived. This sounds promising I thought! Unfortunately he didn’t tell me any. So I will try to stick to the stories he and Marion told me. I discovered that their memories of Burbage go back further than most people I have talked to in the village so far. Tony was born in the village, in houses where The Withies are now. These houses were demolished when George Cady extended the family garage across the road just after The War. As a child his family

moved about quite a lot in the village including time living in Ram Alley, Station Road (now Savernake Road) and Long Drove. After he and Marion were married they lived for three years in a flat above The Bullfinch public house in The High Street. Then they were given a bungalow in Lavington Close. Then after this they moved just round the comer to Webbs Way, where they lived for 43 years. Then just a few weeks ago, surprise, surprise, they are now back living in Lavington Close, just across the road from where they started out! Talk about ever decreasing circles!

At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be 'What Is Hell?' ...

39 As I discovered when I talked to Tony, he seems to have worked everywhere and done everything! Slight exaggeration really! He first went to the old Burbage School in Eastcourt. Then he spent a year at Easton Royal School before eventually going to Pewsey Vale. Then he started work at Blanchard's Farm, followed by a year at Lackham College. After this he signed on for the Army for three years so he could see the World. After six months in Germany a certain President Nasser fell out with Britain's Anthony Eden and Tony was shipped, with hundreds of others, to Libya. He remembers spending days in the Libyan Desert playing cards while Eden made up his mind what to do next. The result was Tony spending a year longer in the army than the three years he signed up for originally. On his return to Burbage he had a number of jobs, including farm work and road building. This was brought to an abrupt end when he damaged his neck and was forced to do lighter work. After this he worked as a gardener at 'Clive House' in Tidworth until he retired in 1993. Tony said he really enjoyed the gardening work and after his retirement he continued to do this kind of work casually around the area until last year when he was forced to retire completely. Much to my surprise I discovered that Marion wasn't born in this part of the World; she was actually born way up in Carlisle, Cumbria, where she lived until she was four. She and the rest of the family then moved down to Collingbourne Ducis and later to Collingbourne Kingston, where she went to school. As she got older she attended the school now called Wellington Academy near Ludgershall. The first job she had was at the dry cleaners in Station Road in Tidworth, followed by a year at Marlborough College. After her boys were born she returned to work in 1976 as ...Come early and listen to our choir practice.

housekeeper for Lord and Lady Cardigan, where she stayed for about fifteen years. In 1991 she then became house keeper for Jane Cornelius who many of us will remember, at the Old Vicarage, until 1999. After this she was house help and child minder to many people around the village, including the Leigh-Hunt family, until she had to have a back operation in 2007. These two first met as a result of a blind date. Tony and a friend were playing in a football match and then Marion made up a foursome to go later to the Mop Fair in Marlborough. Romance blossomed and they were eventually married at St.Mary's Church, Collingbourne Kingston, in July 1960. They have lived the whole of their married life in Burbage as I have already said. They had four sons who still live in the area: Their eldest son is Mark who works as a gardener, John who most of us know as the local postman, Andrew who is a care nurse at Marlborough Lodge and Nicholas who works for Acorn Builders. Marion proudly told me that they now have seven grandchildren. Didn't they do well! Although they have now both officially retired they still continue to be active members of the local community life. Tony was a member of The British Legion and often helped serve behind the bar there. He continues to serve as a member of The Parish Council, which he has done since the early 1990’s. They are also both members of the Good Companions Club. Most people in the village also know that Tony is a gifted artist and have seen his brilliant pictures of flowers, birds and dogs. Marion still continues busy too; she would with seven grandchildren! Long may they continue to be active in the life of Burbage and it would be poorer without them.

First Aid. The committee is looking at setting up an introductory course to first aid. We are doing this in conjunction with the ladies running the defibrillator machines. Although it is in its early stages we would appreciate any expressions of interest from patients which can be made via our email patientliaison@hotmail.co.uk

To use Farm Africa’s own words, it’s great to raise money so we can help “Africa’s farmers feed Africa’s people.” Thank you. Burbage & Easton Royal British Legion Club The May Newsletter For members old and new, or not yet joined - this is the Official Club Newsletter By Gavin Ketchen, Chairman.

Dear members and readers It’s definitely a struggle keeping the Club going! After a very quiet start to the year (5 months!) we are hoping some extra entertainment will help I am pleased to say our variation to the licence has been approved and the most notable effect of this means the Film Club can resume! So, to remind you, every second and fourth Wednesday is Film Club Night in the ‘Skittle Alley Cinema’. The terms of the Film Board Licence means they cannot publicly advertise films so either phone Steve or Sandy on 810854 or keep an eye out for posters in the Club. We have had an enquiry from someone who would like to know if there is any interest in holding a regular Bridge and/or Whist night? Please email me if you would like more information (berbl@burbage-village.co.uk) The committee is looking for a new secretary - our current secretary has commitments elsewhere and at present is unable to remain in the post, although she is staying on the committee. Are you interested? Please get in touch

“ This is nothing ! Before the By-pass, I’d slow right down and get 70 or 80 behind me up the High Street ! ”

47 Demolition Party on Saturday 9th June, at 12.00 noon? It’s the same day as the Saturday Market next door in the Village Hall so we will probably get a free cuppa and maybe even a slice of cake! Both the Legion Club (with consent from the RBL - our landlord) and the Village Hall Management Committee have agreed to take down the wall at the front of the premises. Whether or not it is replaced with another has yet to be determined, but the current wall is no longer fit for purpose So we are working together and need a few volunteers with wheelbarrows and muscles to help for an hour or so, to take the wall down and remove the rubble. Usually we’d have a skip, but on this occasion we have saved that expense and have a cunning plan… Gloves and hi-vis waistcoats will be provided and I recommend protective footwear and suitable clothing that you don’t mind getting a bit grubby. If you can bring a wheelbarrow, that would be a great help All we need to do between now and then, is arrange for the ground to be levelled. That’s a subtle hint for anyone to get in touch if they can help For all this, and more, email me at: berbl@burbage-village.co.uk or you can phone me on 07879 444345. We’re happy for you to simply turn up on the 9th, but it would be great if you could let me know beforehand And now for the entertainment list...

What’s happening at the Club? Every Sunday night is Bingo night, but on the 3rd we are having a special Jubilee Bingo Night - which promises to be a prize-packed evening! Wednesday 20th June is another of our popular ‘Super Bingo Nights’ with the Flyer Full House prize of £100! £10 includes entry and a full set of books (6 main, 1 reverse and the Flyer) On Friday 29th June we are hosting the Big Quiz Night! More details will be online soon and available in the Club Saturday 30th June: - A Live Band will entertain you once more. Always a great night and remember - admission is free to members! Looking ahead to July: Saturday 14th: ‘Juke Box’ are a Duo Act performing live Saturday 28th is Disco Night! Come and dance to the beat, let your hair down and have a great night to some great music from one of our regular great DJ’s We’ve even planned August! Saturday 4th - Live band (details TBC) playing Saturday 25th is the always-fun ‘Karaoke Night’! Can you sing? No? Well don’t let that stop you! I know I can’t and I promise not to take the mike so long as someone else does...

Footpaths Geoff Hill In May a team from the Community Payback Scheme were hard at work in appalling weather conditions clearing years of accumulated soil and leaf debris from the footpath that runs from the top of the school playing field past the White Hart to the High Street. Their work has exposed the original tarmac surface. They have also installed edging boards to reduce the amount of soil that will flow back in. Now this footpath is cleared it will be swept clean several times a year as part of the contract the Council has with Wiltshire Council. The surface is not in great condition in places and we will be looking to see whether it can be repaired. I hope the work will make the path easier and less muddy to use. Peter Duke, who is a member of the footpath maintenance team, has produced descriptions of seven walks of different lengths around Burbage and these with an accompanying map kindly produced by David Butler will be uploaded onto the website. I would like to thank my fellow councillors who asked me to be Chairman for the coming year and for Colin Brown to Vice Chairman. Both Colin and I accepted and look forward to the challenges that will confront us over the next 12 months. At the end of this term all councillors will have to register again for the local elections that will take place on Thursday 2nd May 2013. Free Dog Poo bags: The Parish Council has agreed to supply FREE OF CHARGE Dog Poo bags for residents that walk their dogs in the village. The bags which come in packs of 50, can be collected from the Post Office on the High Street. Burbage Youth Council: A meeting for all teenagers in Burbage will be held at the British Legion on Friday 1st June starting at 6:30pm. Now is the time to get the Youth Council moving so the more teenagers that attend the better and see what projects can be started.

Defibrillator update: Fund raising for the third defibrillator is going very well and when the required amount has been raised, the Parish Council will again match fund the fourth defibrillator at which point it is hoped the village will be covered. Wellbeing and maintenance of the Parish: Recently the Parish has once again made use of the Community Payback Scheme. The project this time was to remove the earth from the footpath that is beside the White Hart pub and goes to the edge of the school playing field. The pathway has been edged so that in future there should not be so much earth washed onto the footpath when it rains. The tarmac surface is being inspected and if it requires maintenance Wiltshire Council will be involved in laying a new surface. The damaged railings on the footpath by the Post Office which were a safety issue have now been mended. Do you have any issues within the Parish that you would to be actioned: Please remember that all the Parish Councillors are volunteers and receive no financial reward for the work that they put into the wellbeing of the parish and its residents. Whilst endeavouring to do their best for the Parish, it would be extremely helpful if residents would contact myself or the Clerk with any issues, good or bad, that they would like to see actioned. If you wish to use e-mail to contact the Parish Council, our e-mail addresses are: chairman@burbage-pc.org.uk or clerk@burbage-pc.org.uk Until next month, Keith Amiss Chairman, Burbage Parish Council
