Welcome to the January 2013 Burbage News Burbage News Editors I expect by now many of us have made New Year resolutions and some will be broken quite quickly and others will stand the test of time. Our resolve is to keep on improving the magazine, taking into account any appropriate suggestions from you, the reader. Please let us know what you would like to see added and any existing items changed or removed so that you get the community magazine that you want. On Sunday 9th December the Burbage News Festive Celebration with the Phoenix Brass Band and the Signing Choir took place at the Village Hall. A great time was had by all with great fun supplied by volunteers who joined in with the Signing Choir on the Twelve Days of Christmas. As it gives so much enjoyment & pleasure to the 100 or so people that attended I think that we now have another regular annual event! As we try to support BRATS in their aim of bringing good high class entertainment to the village, they are pleased to announce the next great event has been booked for Friday 12th April when the Croutons will be performing in the Village Hall. (See advert in this magazine and mark your diaries). At the time of writing this the trees are a beautiful view with the hard frost on the branches, but please keep an eye on friends and neighbours making sure that any residents of senior years or those that are fragile in their health are well and looked after. So we start a new year at the Burbage News full of enthusiasm and hope that you continue to enjoy the magazine as it continues to evolve.

Your Letters to the Burbage News Burbage Surgery I have been a patient at Burbage surgery for just over a year now. I had heard good things said of The Sprays and when I learnt that my much appreciated doctor had moved from Hungerford to Burbage I had the audacity to seek to follow her there. I am very grateful to the surgery management who sanctioned this. It follows from the above that I hold Doctor Clarke in high esteem and value the personal and professional service she has given me. However, I wanted to write an appreciation of the service I feel I receive throughout my contact with the surgery. Firstly, the telephone is not only answered promptly but by a living person not a pre-programmed electronic system. Secondly, when one arrives at the surgery one is not expected to clock in by using a computer touch screen but is greeted by a human being and made to feel welcome. Excellent! The making of appointments is carried out courteously and easily, sometimes even directly by the doctor. To be informed of test results directly by one’s own doctor is a privilege I have not previously experienced. It is a delight to have contact with all the support staff, whether one is making a routine enquiry or receiving a specialist service.

Some may say that Burbage surgery is small and thus easily able to provide a good personal service. This does not follow as there is a welter of vested interests that would seek to dehumanise the various processes involved in medicine. The potential hassle in driving the round trip from Hungerford to Burbage pales into insignificance when balanced against the friendly reception as well as the excellent service I have received during this last year. I am certainly a very happy and well satisfied patient at the Sprays. Robin Kellow. 6 Neighbourhood Watch has been awarded the prestigious Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Volunteering Award in recognition of their work as one of the largest voluntary movements across England and Wales. Neighbourhood Watch is one of best known crime preventative initiatives across the UK with studies showing a 79% decrease in crime where the initiative is in place. With approximately 170,000 co-ordinators covering 3.9 million households, volunteer community advocates are critical in the fight against crime. Mrs Grant, a member of the Stanley Hill Avenue, Amersham Neighbourhood Watch noticed that the curtains of her neighbour's house opposite were drawn despite it being about 11 o’clock in the morning. She knew that there was normally no one at home during the day and having seen three young men in the vicinity a little earlier put two and two together and dialled 999. The men were apprehended. Helping to enable and support coordinators across England and Wales, the Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network (NHWN) is delighted to accept the award on behalf of the whole movement. Jim Maddan, Chairman of NHWN said: ‘Volunteers by their very definition are the people who develop community cohesion in their own time and it is this which brings people together to tackle crime issues and anti-social behaviour. It is the grassroots membership who deserves this award for their enthusiasm, hard work and commitment to preventing and reducing crime’. More information can be found at www.ourwatch.org.uk.

Picking up at 9am and returning them at 3:30, we spread the load so that probably only one journey a day is needed, and with plenty of cars, not every week. Meet Your Community - Introducing Paul & Daile Wilshire In these articles I usually introduce people who have lived many years, sometimes their whole lives, here in Burbage. This time I am introducing a couple who have just moved here because Daile becomes our new team vicar at the beginning of the New Year. She moves here with her husband Paul an d t wo t e e n a g e daughters; Rachel and R e b e c c a . Although Daile and Paul will be living here at Burbage, Daile will also be team vicar of the Collingbournes and Chute. I hope she enjoys driving round country lanes! Daile and Paul’s move to this area will be quite a wrench for them as they have lived for most of their lives in the area around Weymouth, in Dorset. I expect most of us think of it as a place to go with our bucket and spade, by the sea. They also went to the same secondary school; Westham Comprehensive School, though not at the same time. Paul was there first. They first met each other at a beach service and were eventually married at Emmanuel Church, in 1990. Daile pointed out, that at only being nineteen years old, she was a child bride, well almost! Most of Paul’s working life has been

in the flooring trade. He explained that he was experienced at fitting all kinds of floors from hard floors, to vinyls, to carpets. The firm he was working for closed down and so three years ago he became self employed as a supplier and fitter of carpets and flooring. This gave him the opportunity to combine working with supporting Daile with home and family when she started her curacy. He plans to continue this kind of work in this area and would be only too glad to be invited to carry out work. Daile’s career direction has been influenced by her decision at fourteen years old to become a Christian while at a youth mission. She explained that was really quite a sudden decision, as she hadn’t been brought up to attend church regularly. After leaving school, she continued her studies at Weymouth College, before starting her first job at the DHSS as an administrative assistant until 1988. Then she started her training as a nurse at the Dorset School of Nursing at Dorchester. Her first job, in 1991, was in the Trauma Unit and the intensive care Unit at Weymouth Hospital. This was followed by a year working as a community nurse in Swanage, which was what she was

9 aiming to do. In 1994 the Joseph Weld Hospice was opened and Daile was one of the first nurses to work there. While there, she was a key person in helping to set up a day care centre for patients requiring palliative and respite day care. She then continued her nursing career by moving back to community nursing, based at a local medical practice for a while. Daile then took a break from nursing for a while which gave her the opportunity to think about the way forward. During this time she became a youth worker based at a local Methodist Church for a year. Her role was to implement a project which focused on raising self esteem among teenagers with the overarching aim of reducing the teenage pregnancy rate. She worked as a detached youth worker, but also with the local secondary school, providing pastoral care to the young people. It was interesting how her role combined the secular and the spiritual. It was during this time, after leaving nursing and while being a youth worker, that Daile finally decided to begin training for the ministry in the church, which she had been thinking and praying about for quite a while. She began her training as a minister by doing the STETS Course, for three years, at Sarum College, Salisbury. This was followed by three years as a Curate based at St. Andrew’s Church, which is part of the Preston Team, in the Weymouth area. In October she was invited to come and join us here as a Team Vicar, living in Burbage, which she accepted. She said that she was looking forward to moving into a more rural area than she has been

used to, with new challenges. We are looking forward to getting to know Daile, Paul, Rachel and Rebecca better. Daile and Paul tried to convince me that they were into keeping fit and all that! Daile explained to me that she was into something called ‘Boxercise’ and she wears boxing gloves for it. It sounds a bit dangerous to me. We’d better make sure we don’t upset her! Paul is into weight training as well, which he says he plans to set up in their garage. Back in October, Daile entered her first race, the 5km Great South Run, and she is hoping to take part in another 5km race called ‘Rock Solid’ which combines a race with an assault course in Exeter. She is hoping to encourage others to join her team, or at least sponsor the team as she would like to use this opportunity to raise money for our sister diocese in the Church of South Sudan. If you’re interested in joining the team, do get in touch with Daile. I know that they are looking forward to getting to know us here in this part of the world. They moved here in mid December. They are hoping that as many of us as possible will be in the church to welcome them here on Tuesday, 8th January, at 7.30pm. The Licensing will be carried out by the new Bishop of Ramsbury, the Rt. Rev. Edward Condry. Paul and Daile would also like to invite you to an Open House to meet them informally on Saturday 12th January, 11- 4pm at the Vicarage. I'll see you there! Happy New Year! Burbage Baby We hope you had a good Christmas and we look forward to seeing you all in the new term, which starts on the 8th January. We had a good 2012; there were a lot of changes with new committee members. Despite the changes and some hard acts to follow, we have continued the group with good attendance and support. Do pop along and enjoy a morning of fun with your little one!! Our sessions are held every Tuesday during term time from 9.30am to 10.30am at Burbage Village Hall. It is for babies and pre-school children aged 0-5 and their parents or carers. What a great day! The Preschool Toy Fair was a success and thanks go to all those who helped and contributed. Rehearsals were well under way for our Nativity Play with the children busy practising their songs! The children were also looking forward to our end of term Christmas party, making Christmas gifts and planting seasonal bulbs. Burbage Pre-school is open for children from 2½ - 5 years during term times. Morning sessions are Monday –

Each session loosely follows a similar pattern & Toddler Group . with crafts and free play time, followed by a snack then more `Mat time` involving singing, music and sometimes puppets. We have a wide variety of toys ranging from dressing up, wooden kitchen and soft play to a small climbing frame. It is a friendly group which is a fun place for children .For the grown ups there is fresh coffee, tea, cakes, a chance to meet other carers with young children and chat (and even the possibility of a sit down !) The first Coffee ‘n Browse of 2013 will take place on Friday January 4th 9. 30am – 12.30 (our School holiday time) at Burbage’s Church Centre. We’ve got some great stalls of quality goodies, a lot of them hand crafted. Thank you to everyone who helped to raise £56 for Farm Africa at the last Coffee N Browse, at the end of November. A BIG thank you to Burbage’s own fantastic Signing Choir for the Deaf, who were able to raise money for their own charity. They performed ‘Rudolf the red nosed reindeer’ in antlers, and other numbers too including ‘Feed the World’, such a meaningful song when Coffee N Browse raises money for Farm Africa. Congratulations go to Kay Pitt, for correctly guessing the height of a camel in the free competition, and winning the lovely Advent Calendar kindly donated by Diana Smith. On 1st February we will be holding another Silent Auction, when we can all bid for donated items, raising money for Farm Africa. So in the new year we’ll be collecting donated new non-electrical items; please give them to Sarah Scott of 5, Taskers Lane – many thanks. The start of this New Year heralds a dramatic change for me. As a self-supporting minister in full time employment I’m used to burning the candle at both ends. But last December I had a bit of a break as I was between jobs - not that I was any the less busy! At the beginning of January I start a new job– a new location, a new routine, a new challenge and almost certainly a change in culture. I know from past experience that it will take time to adjust. But as I write this I’m wondering how I’ll find time to fit work in again! And alongside me Daile Wilshere also takes up her new position as Team Vicar when she is licensed on 8 January at All Saints’ Church in Burbage. I know Daile well as we studied together and were ordained together at Salisbury and I’m looking forward eagerly to working alongside her. So with changes in both my secular and ministerial life I’m grateful for the stability that only God can provide, but which I need frequent reminders of! As I start on my journey into 2013 I, for one, am grateful that God is always alongside us….and I’m sure I speak for Daile too! To remind them, at the start of the New Year, Methodists make a resolution through a Covenant Service usually on the first Sunday of the New Year. In this they joyfully accept God’s gracious offer that “I will be their God and they shall be my people”. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, saw the idea of covenant as basic to Christian discipleship. He saw it much like a marriage with us on the one side and God in Christ on the other. He emphasised the need for people to grow in relationship with God as his grace and love constantly seeks to transform us. To help people understand this, he devised a regular ceremony – the Covenant Service – so people could bear witness to this, ideally after a time of prayer and reflection.

But whilst a reminder, it’s not something that we have to do to be in relationship with God. Rather it’s only a means to acknowledge his grace in our lives and to remind us that he came to live among us as Jesus, whose birth we celebrated at Christmas. Yet it also serves as a challenge because if God is committed to us, are we prepared to commit ourselves to God? And if so, how can we manage to live out that commitment? So as Daile and I set out on a new direction, I am reminded of the words from Revelation 21:6 – some of the last words in The Bible – from the one who sits on the throne – “And now I make all things new!” With every blessing for the New Year… Rob

The Sudan Project All Saints’ Church and the Community of Burbage, in partnership with Tearfund, have raised £10,021 over recent months to provide seeds and tools for the people of southern Sudan, aiding self-sufficiency.

The Right Revd Dr Graham Kings, Bishop of Sherborne, presented a certificate from Tearfund to Jane Bowyer and Liz Smith of the Burbage Building Bridges committee at the recent Sudan Sunday service.

Missions supported by All Saints JANUARY – BARNABAS FUND The international headquarters of the Barnabas Fund is based in The Old Rectory, River Street, Pewsey. Their mission statement reads: “The mission of the Barnabas Fund is to support Christians where they are in a minority and suffer discrimination, oppression and persecution as a consequence of their faith” . Financial, material and spiritual support is given to such people so that they can start to rebuild their lives again. In addition, prayer information, requests and resources are supplied to those interested, together with educational material about current situations, so that they can take their part in supporting their fellow Christians. In some cases, public petitions and letter-writing campaigns are organised . Ladies Breakfast 24th November

On a cold and foggy November morning 30+ Ladies came along to the church centre to hear Deborah and Rachel of the Mustard Seed, the Christian Book and Coffee shop in Marlborough share something of their story with us. We heard how both ladies came to faith, both in very different ways, how their journeys had brought them both together, in the context of playing squash to start and how together, as their friendship developed and grew, so did their faith and out of that came the vision for the Mustard Seed. The Mustard Seed has been in business now for over 20 years. Starting very small, with a spot at the closed church at the bottom end of Marlborough High Street, they moved after 7 years, to the premises they now have, after much negotiation and discussion. Initially, all run by 4 volunteers, over time, all of this has changed and Deborah and Rachel have needed to become more commercially aware and astute and also change the way they conduct the business. It was fascinating to hear how they have had to adapt and how they are continuing to adapt as the market for books, CD’s, cards, gifts and drinking coffee changes rapidly. When they first started they were one of only 2 or 3 coffee shops in Marlborough. Throughout this, they have kept their vision, and their friendship, no mean feat in today’s world. They have found that continued prayer, support of each other and talking through issues has been critical to them. They need continued support from all of us and all the local churches in the area too. Please support them when buying your Christian books, CD’s and materials and when popping in for a coffee! The team charged with setting it all up on Friday 7th started in the morning unloading trees and nearly passed out as dusk came and darkness fell and we struggled to finish putting up the two marquees. Whilst hard work, at the end it all looked fantastic with carpeted marquees for the Christmas market stalls. Preparations continued into the evening and eventually it was all done with lights finished at one am! The night watchmen did their stuff and ensured all was safe and ready for kick off. On Saturday morning the sun shone and we had fantastic weather for the whole weekend. The selling crew were in good form and our customers came in record numbers, Saturday morning was incredibly busy. We had a band and live music for the first time and it was also great to have the support of the Savernake Forest Cubs and Scouts from the village who served well received hot soup over the weekend. Our local MP, Clare Perry worked as part of the team of volunteers selling trees from 1pm until 2pm which helped get the press along to generate extra publicity for next year. Building on the efforts of those who pioneered the 18 year old venture we promote our brand with the above logo and put our laminated brand tag on every tree to remind people that their money goes to Burbage Church funds. Please display your treeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brand tag and encourage your visitors to get their tree from Burbage in future years! Free tree recycling takes place on Saturday 12th of January, 10am until 2pm, when your tree can be chipped into garden mulch free of charge courtesy of village resident Simon Last. The weather in 2012 made this a year to forget but Christmas trees were one crop that enjoyed the uninterrupted water supply this year. Tree quality was excellent, and all of the 650 trees we sourced were sold, improving our 2011 tally of 600 trees sold. Visitors were kind enough to comment that they were impressed by Burbage and its community effort.

24 All buyers received a free prize draw ticket with their tree and an invitation to purchase further tickets. Many thanks for the prizes donated by Burbage Garage, Burbage Mace and the star prize of the 32 inch Panasonic flat screen TV donated by Haine and Smith opticians. The draw boosted takings by over £1,400 so thanks to everyone for buying extra tickets. The event was kindly sponsored by Equilibrium Wealth Management of Marlborough who contributed £2,000 towards our running costs as sponsors to our village event. Another first for 2012 was the addition of a cake stall; this was a great success with @100 cakes donated by the bakers of Burbage raising £441. Further funds were raised by the efforts of the teams in the kitchen and on our wreath and foliage stall plus stallholder rents making a total combined net profit of just over £15,000 smashing our previous records of £11,500 in 2011, £10,000 in 2010 and £7,000 in 2009. A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who bought trees to support the event and to all the volunteers who worked so hard. It was great to have the full range of ages in our community participating, from the Cubs to those in their eighties. Any comments or suggestions for next year? We have a drinks party for all the helpers on the evening after the sale and it is a great way to start the festive season! Burbage Parish Council www.burbage-pc.org.uk Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the start of a New Year and the councillors have a lot to achieve before we have the Council elections in early May. This year all councillors will stand down and either seek reelection or leave the Council for good. If anyone wishes to put themselves forward to be a councillor, then look out for details of how you can put yourself into the election and what being a councillor entails in future editions of the Burbage News and the Burbage Parish Council website. After the election has taken place there will be much in the remaining eight months of 2013 that the new elected council will have to do to keep the village in good repair for all to enjoy. Village Maintenance: At the meeting last month it was agreed that action would be taken in late January to get the earth footpath behind the Crosbyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s upgraded from Taskers Lane to Burroughs Drove and the footpath where it joins the tarmac path down by the school playing fields. A grant has been secured to pay for half of the cost. Traffic calming will be started with the installation of village gates at the main four entrances to the village as has recently been done at Great Bedwyn.

Neighbourhood Plan: The working party continues to work on the Neighbourhood Plan, taking advice from advisors in this field of work, and slowly a framework of how to achieve the final plan will come together. This is going to be a massive task with regard to time and effort throughout 2013. When there is any appropriate information, the Parish Council will ensure that the residents are informed. Precept 2013 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 2014: An extra-ordinary meeting of the council was held on 3rd December 2012 and although advertised on the village notice boards, the Burbage News magazine and the Council website, it was a real shame that no residents of the parish attended the meeting. The precept was agreed by a majority of the councillors and it will be put forward to Wiltshire Council in early January.

Before March, major work will take place at Seymour Pond on the advice of Wiltshire Council and conservation experts with regard to reed and weed removal. At a later date the railings on the High Street pavement by Seymour Pond will be replaced.

BPC Village Maintenance Team Three projects on which the village maintenance team has been working over the past few months were approved at the Council meeting in December. These were the installation of village gates, the improvement of the footpath from Taskers Lane to Burroughs Drove, and the renovation and painting of the phone boxes. It is intended to install village gates at the bottom of the High Street near the garage, on the Marlborough Road as you come into the village from the North, on the Savernake Road at Stibb Green and lastly on Eastcourt Road near Saddlers Way. For those who have seen them the gates will be of an identical design to those installed on the entrance to Great Bedwyn. Following further discussions with the footpath officer of Wiltshire Council the specification for the upgrading of the footpath from Taskers Lane to Burroughs Drove has been agreed. It is now possible to appoint the contractor which will be done in the next couple of weeks with the intention of getting the work completed after Christmas.

A lot of research has been carried out into what needs to be done to restore Seymour pond and more details can be found on the following page. Also during the month, a survey of the status of all the streetlights was completed and the information passed to Wiltshire Highways for action. This includes an observation that two streetlights, one on Eastcourt Road and the other at the roundabout, are on during the day. The Wiltshire Council maintenance contract now includes leaf clearance during the autumn and winter. The Council has cleared the leaves from key footpaths on three occasions and it is hoped that the improvement in the usability of the footpaths has been noticed. The contract will be renegotiated in the first quarter of next year and if there are any paths that need attention, but were omitted from this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contract, please let the Council clerk know. Next year a programme of maintenance and improvement will be carried out on the childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s playground. The exact scope of the work is still being planned and will depend on the outcome of the annual safety inspection and the availability of funds. The work will be planned so that it avoids school holidays when the use of the playground is the highest. More information will be given in future reports.

One of these is already in use as an information point, the second will be home for defibrillator and the use for the third one is still being considered. All of them, however, are in a poor state of repair and need extensive redecoration to bring them back to their former glory. BPC VMT - Seymour Pond

Prospect Hospice

Seymour pond is currently badly silted up and covered with extensive areas of sedge. A number of people have enquired what steps the Parish Council is taking to renovate and maintain the pond where major work has not taken place since 2008.

Prospect Box Scheme Making the most of your small change

Unfortunately, the response is not a simple one of dredging the pond and clearing out the sedge. The pond has been colonised by highly invasive non-native New Zealand Pygmy weed which must be treated before any major work can take place on the pond to avoid spreading the weed over an even greater area. This treatment can only be done in the spring once the plant starts growing again. Furthermore it may involve the use of a specific herbicide which can only be used under licence from the Environment Agency. The council is still taking advice on what work, if any, can be carried out before this weed has been treated. An added complication is that half the pond is owned by the developer Persimmon Homes and it will be necessary to obtain its agreement to any work. Once the Pygmy weed is under control the intention would be to dredge the pond and take out much of the reed. This will probably be undertaken in stages over the course of two years so as to cause as little disruption to wildlife in the pond as possible. Small areas will be left including one in front of the inlet to the pond to act as a silt filter. The open water would then be seeded with native aquatic plants. Once the pond is back in a good state an ongoing maintenance programme will be instituted. In developing this programme the Council is taking advice from a number of bodies including the Wiltshire Council biodiversity team, Wiltshire Wildlife, and the Pond Conservation Trust.

Prospect Hospice is urging people with just a small amount of free time to support its box collection scheme. The scheme, supported by almost 10,000 households and businesses, has been in place for almost as long as the charity has provided dedicated end-of-life care to the people of Swindon and beyond. Its success is largely dependent on the involvement of box collectors who twice yearly call at the homes of friends and neighbours to collect the money from their boxes. “It’s a very simple scheme, but one that has enormous value to Prospect Hospice,” says Gifty Tawiah, Prospect’s boxes fundraiser. “The great thing is that it means people can contribute towards the work of their local hospice over time, just by putting their loose change in their own box. It makes a huge difference to the care we deliver locally. Last year, boxes contributed over £90,000 towards the care of patients and their families in our community.” Integral to the success of the scheme are people who bring in the boxes each spring and autumn, and Gifty is looking for more of these box collectors to support the scheme in new neighbourhoods and to cover rounds no longer supported by a collector. December was one of those months where being a member of the BERBL Club really pays off for our members. They enjoyed free entry to all our functions, cheaper drinks (when compared to normal pub prices), a friendly atmosphere and great entertainment, as well as all the benefits of belonging to the Royal British Legion! Barbara launched her children’s book ‘The Savernake Big Belly Oak at the market. The children kept busy with plenty of logs and crayons, to produce great bark rubbing pictures of the Big Belly Oak. “It was extremely hard to choose winners as all the children had put great effort into producing masterpieces. I finally selected the pictures that made me smile the most. I was extremely impressed with the amount of detail some of the children added to their drawings.” The three winners each received a book token to use at the White Horse Book Shop in Marlborough. We have had a successful season so far. We went down well at Coffee N Browse with a generous donation and our contribution to the Village Hall - Burbage News Festive Celebration was well received. We also received a generous donation for that, so our funds for our charity "Hearing Dogs for Deaf People"are going well.

On a day white with frost some eighty members and guests enjoyed a sumptuous Christmas Luncheon in The Village Hall on Wednesday 12 December. An amusing grace by Rodney Stone gave the meal a good start everyone appreciating the generosity of Tim and Sue Curnick of Southgrove Farm who supplied and cooked the majority of the meal. Thank you both for supporting this happy event.

We were at the Good Companions Christmas dinner on 12th and then Marlborough Lodge on 13th.That should be all our performances for this year, then we will have to start practising ready for next year. If any one who has seen us would like to join in please contact: Jean on 810451 or Cynthia on 810026 We would be pleased to see anyone and it's all for fun and a good cause.

Suitably refreshed members were entertained by children from Burbage Primary School singing carols and then signing with The Signing Choir. Thanks to Chairman Mary Powell, supported by a team of helpers and waiters, the event all too soon came to a close with Joan Dobsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bumper raffle. Dennis Vallis. Dennisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; friends and neighbours will be sorry that he has had to move to a nursing home in Marlborough after having a number of falls, followed by hospital stays.
