Kenneth Branagh directs and leads a stellar cast (including Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench and Willem Dafoe) in this thrilling new adaption of Agatha Christie’s classic detective novel. When a passenger is murdered on board, a lavish train ride through Europe unfolds into a stylish and suspenseful mystery in this tale of thirteen stranded strangers - and Detective Hercule Poirot’s race to solve the riddle before the killer strikes again.

When Tom Stocks, a young man from Bolton has to turn down a chance to study at the East 15 drama school because he cannot afford the fees, he sets up a campaign to highlight socio-economic exclusion in the arts. Christopher Eccleston, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Maxine Peake and Samuel West are among those who feature in this film talking about the barriers to success.

Annette Bening and Jamie Bell star in this captivating adaptation of the memoir by British actor Peter Turner, recounting his stranger-than-fiction romance with the legendary Hollywood star Gloria Grahame during the last years of her life. What starts as a vibrant affair between a legendary femme fatale and her young lover quickly grows into a deeper relationship, but their passion and lust for life is tested to the limits by tragic events beyond their control.

After a botched bank robbery lands his younger brother in prison, Constantine “Connie” Nikas embarks on a twisted odyssey through New York City’s underworld in an increasingly desperate and dangerous attempt to get his brother out.

In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women’s movement, the 1973 tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King and ex-men’s champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs came as a turning point in sports’ politics and resonated far beyond the tennis court. Little Miss Sunshine’s Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton reunite behind the camera for this fun yet politically acute film that’s still relevant today.

Matt Damon and Julianne Moore star in this complex tale of very flawed people making very bad choices in a seemingly idyllic 1950s community, scripted by Joel and Ethan Coen. A brilliant balancing act of antics and mayhem, which offers creeping suspense, jet-black humour, and sly social commentary. TIFF

Dir: Kenneth Branagh UK 2017 rt tbc

Dir: Yorgos Lanthimos UK/Ireland 2017 121m

Dir: Sean Baker US 2017 115m

Starring: Kenneth Branagh, Michelle Pfeiffer

Starring: Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman

Starring: Willem Dafoe, Brooklynn Prince

Kenneth Branagh directs and leads a stellar cast (including Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench and Willem Dafoe) in this thrilling new adaption of Agatha Christie’s classic detective novel. When a passenger is murdered on board, a lavish train ride through Europe unfolds into a stylish and suspenseful mystery in this tale of thirteen stranded strangers - and Detective Hercule Poirot’s race to solve the riddle before the killer strikes again.

International purveyor of the bizarre, Yorgos Lanthimos, brings Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman together in this darkly comic modern rendering of an ancient Greek morality play. Steven is a highly regarded cardiologist, living in a suburban paradise with his beautiful wife Anna and two loving children. But his world is upended when his strangely intense friendship with a teenage boy takes a sinister turn, and the doctor is forced to confront an unthinkable sacrifice. Melbourne International Film Festival

Precocious six-year-old Moonee is spending her summer with a ragtag group of friends outside the candy-floss coloured motel where she lives with her young mother, Halley. But whilst Moonee makes the most of her childhood, Halley, only just an adult herself, attempts to make ends meet and keep a roof above their heads.

MON 13, 8.15PM This screening will have Captioned Subtitles for the hard of hearing.

“The Florida Project is sublime: a blast of life, of celebratory highs and lamentable lows, on the outer economic edges of the Sunshine State.” AV Club

“The Greek-born filmmaker’s latest and possibly craziest work.” Los Angeles Times

TIFF

TIFF

A film that is as masterfully directed and emotionally poignant as Son of Saul, 1945 is an instant classic. Jewish father and son return to the village from which they were deported, and where indifferent bystanders seized their home and possessions. Their arrival is a moment of crisis for the small community, whose members struggle to cope with feelings of guilt and fear of revenge. Shot in expressive black and white, 1945 is a quiet yet striking study of the aftershocks of war.

THE CONVERSATION (12A)

Dir: Ida Lupino US 1953 71m

Dir: Francis Ford Coppola US 1974 113m

Starring: Edmund O’Brien, Frank Lovejoy

Starring: Gene Hackman, John Cazale

Starring: Yafit Asulin, Avraham Aviv Alush

Ray and Gilbert’s fishing trip takes a terrifying turn when the hitch-hiker they pick up turns out to be a sadistic murderer, fleeing a killing spree. Ida Lupino’s gritty noir deserves to become a classic of the thriller genre. A favourite of Martin Scorsese, this true crime story will leave you unsettled.

Coppola’s classic thriller in which Hackman plays a surveillance expert tasked with recording a couple by an unknown client. But what he captures raises unsettling questions. Featuring an incredible cast of supporting actors, especially Harrison Ford, Robert Duvall and John Cazale, this is a haunting film about technology, alienation and guilt.

The building site of a new synagogue located at the heart of a close-knit community in Jerusalem turns into a battleground between husbands and wives, when a new charismatic rabbi decrees that it will not feature the women’s balcony - thus barring them altogether from religious services. A joyous, riotous and thought-provoking portrayal of a community striving for equality, which has deservedly become a global hit. [Advised cert 12A]

Dir: Byun Sung-hyun South Korea 2017 120m

With English Subtitles

Starring: Sul Kyung-gu, Yim Si-wan

Dir: Lee Dong-eun South Korea 2016 115m

Opening with a conversation about food followed by sudden, murderous violence, and fracturing its chronology into separate timelines, this latest feature from Byun Sung-hyun owes a certain debt to Quentin Tarantino, but is also a moody neo-noir, all existential musings, rain-swept treachery and savagery just out of shot. Whether inside prison or out, ruthless gangster Jae-ho and his new protégé Hyun-su struggle to trust each other in a world of endless double-dealing and betrayal.

Starring: Bae Jong-ok, Lee Won-gun, Ji Yun-ho

A woman separated from her husband is bringing up her high-school-pupil son Soo-hyun alone. She thinks she knows and understands him, but she’s wrong: Soo-hyun is gay, and it’s only when he’s seriously injured in a car accident that she finds out who he really is. Brought to vivid emotional life by an excellent cast, the film confronts Korean homophobia and depicts a mother-son relationship with searing clarity.

Tawai is the word the nomadic hunter-gatherers of Borneo use to describe their inner feeling of connection to nature. In this dreamy, philosophical and sociological look at life, explorer Bruce Parry travels the world to learn from people living lives very differently to our own. From the jungles of Malaysia to the tributaries of the Amazon, Tawai is a quest for reconnection, providing a powerful voice from the heart of the forest itself.

17-year-old Ying Ling is a trainee mortician in one of China’s largest funeral homes. She delicately treats the corpses, terrified of the spirits that might be lurking in the long corridors. This documentary is a portrait of a vibrant young woman approaching adulthood in a place filled with final farewells, in a time when new philosophies are fast overtaking age-old traditions.

THE FARTHEST (PG) Dir: Emer Reynolds Ireland 2017 121m

More than 12 billion miles away a tiny spaceship is leaving our Solar System and entering deep space. Launched in 1977, Voyager continues to beam revolutionary information across unimaginable distances with less computing power than a modern hearing aid. It’s estimated that Voyager’s nuclear generator will last another decade before the lights finally go out. But this little craft will travel on, carrying a Golden Record bearing recordings and images of life on Earth. It could very well outlive humanity and our creations and be the only evidence that we ever existed.

Dir: Francis Ford Coppola US 1974 113m

“The tale of this incredible achievement is detailed in a magnificent documentary that is nothing less than memorable.” Edinburgh International Film Festival
