Will Shakespeare’s life is going badly; his love life is a shambles, he is short of money and he has writer’s block. But then he meets the aristocratic Viola de Lesseps and their clandestine, taboo-breaking affair inspires him to write one of the greatest love stories ever told… Michael’s 90th Birthday

Year: 2021 Duration: 175m (with short interval)

Co-produced by Nottingham-based Aegis Trust. Released to coincide with the 75th Anniversary of the end of the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. Almost 1 million people in 22 countries carried out the unprovoked murder of 11 million innocent men, women and children in WW2. 99% of those responsible were never prosecuted; most were never even questioned. The Allies unanimously agreed to prosecute those responsible when they drew up The London Agreement in August 1945. But, after the late 1940s, these very same Allies did almost nothing. Why? Director David Wilkinson attempts to find out precisely why so many were actively permitted to get away with their crime(s) – the crime of mass murder on an industrial scale.

On board a plane flying to Mexico City, a mixed bag of passengers and crew find themselves facing a lifethreatening situation. Candid confessions – as well as musical interludes – help them ward off fears of imminent death. A camp and kitsch comedy from Pedro Almodóvar. Happy belated 50th Birthday Jon – we got to celebrate it eventually

Brian De Palma’s masterful adaptation of Stephen King’s best-selling debut novel is one of the cinema’s greatest supernatural chillers. A wildly stylish and intensely emotional throat-grabber, Carrie stars a brilliant Spacek as a mercilessly teased—and telekinetic—high schooler who exacts outsized revenge on her peers at the prom. De Palma’s extraordinary filmmaking skills are on full display throughout, and especially at the tour de force climax. Rooftopfilms.com

At the centre of the story is Passepartout, a well-studied little marmoset monkey who dreams of visiting and exploring all the places in his books, but his overprotective mother is intent on keeping him safe at home. However, when Passepartout crosses paths with the intelligent conartist Phileas Frog, he finds himself caught up in a wager worth millions; to travel around the world in a recordsetting 80 days. Based on the popular adventure novel by Jules Verne.

When their biggest rival, Humdinger, starts wreaking havoc as the mayor of Adventure City, Ryder and everyone’s favourite heroic pups kick into high gear to face the challenge. Armed with exciting new gadgets and gear, the PAW Patrol joins forces with a savvy dachshund to save the citizens of Adventure City.

Everyone’s favourite spooky family is back in the animated comedy sequel, The Addams Family 2 . In this all-new movie we find Morticia and Gomez distraught that their children are growing up, skipping family dinners, and totally consumed with “scream time.” To reclaim their bond they decide to cram Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester and the crew into their haunted camper and hit the road for one last miserable family vacation.

Following an accident, little mouse Whizzy and the fox Whitebelly meet up in animal paradise. In this new world, they must relinquish their old animal instincts and follow a path to a new life. Having lost their natural instincts, they subsequently become best friends and overcome what would normally be hailed impossible. The film for young children and stop-motion animation lovers is about hope and courage. The film includes over 100 puppet characters and 11 sets. Edinburgh Film Festival

Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old CIA friend Felix Leiter turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology. Daniel Craig returns for his last outing as 007 with an all-star cast including Ralph Fiennes, Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux and Rami Malek.

This riveting first-hand account tells the story behind the legendary band that helped inspire the alternative rock sound of the 90s. Philipp Reichenheim’s explosive documentary traces Dinosaur Jr.’s turbulent story back to where it all began. Armed with a treasure trove of archival footage, including of concerts and music videos, and new interviews with band members alongside a cavalcade of rock luminaries – from Thurston Moore and Frank Black to Kim Gordon and Henry Rollins – Freakscene testifies to the greatness of a true rock ’n’ roll original. Melbourne International Film Festival

“Don’t let’s ask for the moon. We have the stars.” Bette Davis gave one of her most celebrated performances as Charlotte Vale, a troubled young woman who has been subjected to years of emotional abuse at the hands of her domineering mother. The film’s depiction of mental health issues and the treatment available is remarkably enlightened for its time, and with Max Steiner’s glorious Oscar®-winning score and great performances all round, Now, Voyager remains one of the standouts of Hollywood’s golden age. Lisa, once a brilliant playwright, no longer writes. She lives with her family in Switzerland, but her heart remains in Berlin, beating in time with that of her twin brother Sven, the famous theatre actor. Since Sven has been suffering from an aggressive type of leukaemia, the relationship between them has become even closer. Sven reflects her deepest longings and awakens in her the desire to be creative, to feel alive again. My Little Sister is a beautifully shot, psychologically astute family story. Haifa Film Festival

Directors: Michael Dweck & Gregory Kershaw Country: Italy/Greece/US

Director: Ben Sharrock Country: UK Year: 2020

Year: 2020 Duration: 84m With English Subtitles

Duration: 104m Starring: Amir El-Masry, Sidse Babett Knudsen

In a very secretive community in Northern Italy live a few elderly men and their trusty, highly trained dogs. They are the sole keepers of the prized Alba truffle, which can only be found in the depths of the mysterious local forests. But greed and outside influences are starting to impact the community, and as the elders grow older, the traditions are under threat. With unprecedented access, this delightful documentary journeys into an elusive, eccentric world.

Ben Sharrock’s deadpan comedy-drama brings a completely fresh perspective to the life of a migrant. Musician Omar has fled conflict in Syria and now finds himself at a desolate refugee centre on a remote Scottish island. Separated from home and family, he waits in limbo for others to decide his future. A beautiful, achingly poignant tale that will break your heart on the way to warming your soul.

A harmonious life in the Tibetan grasslands is disrupted by two rambunctious young boys when they repurpose their father’s sole remaining condom as a balloon. This innocent theft leads to an unwanted pregnancy and community friction, further complicated from the collision of strict population control laws and Buddhist ideals of reincarnation. Equally comedic and tragic, Balloon is a visually sumptuous meditation on modernity, spirituality, and the preservation of family.

Francis Ford Coppola’s classic 1983 coming-of-age drama The Outsiders is given a new 4K restoration re-titled The Outsiders: The Complete Novel . It’s the story of young men growing up where they have little going for them, with two opposing groups, the Greasers and the Socs, continually fight against each other. This sharply observed coming-of-age comedy stars Jo Hartley (This is England) and newcomers Nell Barlow & Ella-Rae Smith. Socially awkward AJ is on holiday with her overbearing family in a caravan park in Dorset. She dresses for concealment and is determined not to have fun, until she meets and unexpectedly falls for the free-spirited lifeguard Isla, who might just be the girl of her dreams. Timothée Chalamet leads a remarkable cast in one of the most anticipated films of the year. He plays Paul Atreides, heir to the throne that governs the most important planet in the known universe, Arrakis. His father rules Arrakis, but the desert planet’s chief natural resource, a drug that gives its users superhuman powers, makes it the target of violent battles and political treachery. Adapting Frank Herbert’s legendary novel, Denis Villeneuve confirms his status as that rarest of artists, a visionary maker of blockbusters. Dune delivers a complete immersion into new, spectacular worlds. TIFF

The winner of the Un Certain Regard award at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and Brazil’s submission for that year’s Oscars, Invisible Life is a tropical melodrama by Karim Aïnouz (Madame Satã). Living in Rio de Janeiro in the 1940s, inseparable sisters Guida and Euridice Gusmão are, like all women of their generation, raised to be essentially invisible in the eyes of Brazilian society. Each of the girls has her own special dream, however, and neither can imagine life without the other. Yet one day they’ll have to go their separate ways. Aïnouz’s acclaimed film is based on the novel by Martha Batalha. Filmlink.org

In his darkly comic directorial debut, Daniel (Good Bye Lenin! ) plays a version of himself to skewer celebrity, privilege and the movies. When Daniel, a famous actor, encounters Bruno in a local bar, his neighbour reveals a far more intimate knowledge of Daniel’s life than he is comfortable with… Written for the screen by best-selling acombines verbal sparring with ‘Schadenfreude’ for a wryly entertaining comedy of wits and secrets that will have you going home and making sure you know who lives next door.

An aspiring fashion designer is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters a dazzling wannabe singer. But the glamour is not all it appears to be and the dreams of the past start to crack and splinter into something darker. Bristling with boundless imagination, Edgar Wright’s time-travelling psychological thriller is both a joyous celebration of cinema and a heartfelt love letter to the city of London. Without doubt one of this year’s most purely enjoyable films. London Film Festival
