Two policemen are sent into the snowcovered mountains to arrest a writer. Their boss’s hidden agenda: to clean out witnesses to an earlier purge of dissidents. Based on a true story, this modern thriller tells the story of a failed effort by the Iranian government to murder almost two dozen journalists in 1995. Secretly shot on location in Iran and defying the director’s 20-year ban from filmmaking, Manuscripts Don’t Burn is an incendiary critique of the Iranian regime.

When a wormhole (which theoretically can connect widely-separated regions of space-time) is discovered, explorers and scientists unite to embark on a voyage through it, transcending the limits of human space travel. Christopher Nolan directs an all-star cast lead by Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway in this interdimensional sci-fi epic based on the theories of physicist Kip Thorne.

From the director of The Help comes this stirring, thrillingly sound-tracked biopic of soul and funk superstar James Brown. Taylor’s portrait of the ambitious young singer shows us a figure who fights past a childhood of extreme poverty, abuse and abandonment in rural Georgia and a short spell behind bars to become the ‘Godfather of Soul’ and one of the 20th century’s most influential musical figures. Brown is candidly portrayed; the film doesn’t diminish his flaws, but explores them alongside his supreme talent, and is all the more satisfying for it. ICO

Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes, the new film from Turkish auteur Nuri Bilge Ceylan is compelling, hypnotic, and absolutely deadly in its aim.

A harried New Yorker trying to sell the Parisian apartment he’s inherited runs up against its current occupants - a spirited elderly woman and her acidtongued daughter - in this warm and witty comedy-drama from the great American playwright Israel Horovitz. Benedict Cumberbatch stars as the brilliant mathematician, cryptanalyst and pioneering computer scientist Alan Turing, who spearheaded the Enigma code-breaking operation during World War II and was later persecuted by the British government for his homosexuality. Merging potent drama with nail-biting suspense, The Imitation Game does cinematic justice to the vision, determination and personal story of Alan Turing.

Violette follows the compelling story of novelist Violette Leduc and her struggle to find her voice as a writer. Scarred by both a childhood trauma and a loveless marriage, Violette finds a complex mentor in Simone de Beauvoir and gains entry to a world of literary giants. A parade of great French writers from Camus to Genet is brought to life by a magnificent ensemble cast. Director Martin Provost vividly and unsentimentally recreates the heady intellectual atmosphere of 1940s Paris.

From producer Guillermo del Toro comes an animated comedy with a unique style.

ICO

Starring: Kevin Kline, Kristin Scott Thomas,

Sandrine Kiberlain

Edward Snowden’s whistleblowing has been one of the news stories of the decade. On top of his earth-shaking revelations about internet privacy, there was the added intrigue of the subsequent manhunt. Secret locations, encrypted correspondences and attempts to evade capture… it had the makings of a gripping, real-life spy thriller. And here it is. The Guardian

Matthew McConaughey

Dir: Steve James United States 2014 120m

In 2013, we lost Roger Ebert - arguably America’s best-known and most influential movie critic. Based on his memoir of the same name, Life Itself recounts Ebert’s fascinating journey from politicised school newspaperman, to Chicago Sun-Times movie critic, to Pulitzer Prize winner, to television household name, to the miracle of finding love at 50, and finally his “third act” as a major voice on the Internet when he could no longer physically speak.

Dir: Andrey Zvyagintsev Russian Federation 2014 140m Starring: Vladimir Vdovichenkov, Elena Lyadova

Set on the remote Kola Peninsula, near the Russian border with Finland, Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Leviathan tells of the tragic conflict between the individual and a corrupt system of power. Kolya lives with his second wife and his son in a house he built on a rocky shore. The mayor of a local town wants to acquire the property for redevelopment, but with the help of a childhood friend, Kolya attempts to resist the compulsory purchase.

“It’s a film of ferocious political rage, railing against Russia’s corrupt masters, but it’s also mysterious and poetic, eventually opening out to metaphysical perspectives.” The Guardian

A witty and resonant blend of light comedy and heartfelt drama, My Old Lady is, in every sense, a mature work and the product of a master storyteller. TIFF

Set on the remote Kola Peninsula, near the Russian border with Finland, Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Leviathan tells of the tragic conflict between the individual and a corrupt system of power. “It’s a film of ferocious political rage, railing against Russia’s corrupt masters, but it’s also mysterious and poetic, eventually opening out to metaphysical perspectives.” The Guardian

A witty and resonant blend of light comedy and heartfelt drama, My Old Lady is, in every sense, a mature work and the product of a master storyteller. TIFF

ICO

Edward Snowden’s whistleblowing has been one of the news stories of the decade. On top of his earth-shaking revelations about internet privacy, there was the added intrigue of the subsequent manhunt. “It’s a film of ferocious political rage, railing against Russia’s corrupt masters, but it’s also mysterious and poetic, eventually opening out to metaphysical perspectives.” The Guardian

A witty and resonant blend of light comedy and heartfelt drama, My Old Lady is, in every sense, a mature work and the product of a master storyteller. TIFF

ICO

More than 40 years have passed since Britain fought a secret war in Oman. Major Nicholas Ofield has returned for the first time since his involvement in the conflict to retread his battlegrounds and reflect on what the conflict meant personally, and in the wider socio-political context. Supported with archive footage and interviews from Colonel Mike Ball and Major Mike Austin, who also fought in the conflict, Operation Oman is the gripping true story of one of the most successful counter insurgency campaigns ever fought.

MAGIC MEN + INTRODUCTION (15)

Dir: Alexandre Arcady France 2014 110m

Dirs: Guy Nattiv & Erez Tadmor Israel 2013

Sticking dangerously close to the reallife incident that inspired it, 24 Days (24 Jours: La Verite sur l’affaire Ilan Halimi) offers up a white-knuckle dramatisation of the nearly monthlong kidnapping and torture of 23year-old Ilan Halimi, whose traumatic ordeal at the hands of the “Gang of Barbarians” prompted a massive police manhunt and, eventually, a national outcry against anti-Semitism in France. A powerful and timely film by one of France’s most celebrated filmmakers.

The memory of the Holocaust, a journey in search of family origins, a religious conversion, Greece and its beautiful scenery, rap music, magic, a bit of Zorba, a Greek prostitute - all of these meet in Magic Men and blend into a work whose every scene will fill us with emotion. Profound and, at times, comic, this is a father and son drama that fuses Hassidic rap, magic tricks and sexual favours - on a road trip from Israel to Greece. Leora Hadas, an Israeli PhD student in Film & TV Studies at the University of Nottingham, will introduce this screening.

Leora Hadas, an Israeli PhD student in Film & TV Studies at the University of Nottingham, will introduce this screening.

and learn how to

More than 40 years have passed since Britain fought a secret war in Oman. Major Nicholas Ofield has returned for the first time since his involvement in the conflict to retread his battlegrounds and reflect on what the conflict meant personally, and in the wider socio-political context. Supported with archive footage and interviews from Colonel Mike Ball and Major Mike Austin, who also fought in the conflict, Operation Oman is the gripping true story of one of the most successful counter insurgency campaigns ever fought.

The Vatican Museums 3D brings you inside the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel for the first time, to show masterpieces from the likes of Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Van Gogh and da Vinci to name but a few.

100m With English Subtitles

The memory of the Holocaust, a journey in search of family origins, a religious conversion, Greece and its beautiful scenery, rap music, magic, a bit of Zorba, a Greek prostitute - all of these meet in Magic Men and blend into a work whose every scene will fill us with emotion. Profound and, at times, comic, this is a father and son drama that fuses Hassidic rap, magic tricks and sexual favours - on a road trip from Israel to Greece. Leora Hadas, an Israeli PhD student in Film & TV Studies at the University of Nottingham, will introduce this screening.
