At the peak of her international career, Maria Enders agrees to take part in a revival of the play that once made her famous. Back then she played the role of the alluring young girl who disarms her boss Helena, but now she is being asked to step into the other role, that of the older Helena. When her co-star, a young and wild Hollywood starlet, arrives on the scene, Maria comes face-to-face with an uncomfortable reflection of herself.

A bent London cop who works underground gets involved with some seriously dangerous people in this stunning new drama from young British director Gerard Johnson.

In this glorious, animated tale, The Moomin family decide to leave peaceful Moominvalley for a holiday on the Riviera and a taste of the high society. Snork Maiden and Moominpappa are enchanted but rest of the family, less so! [In English]

Sixteen-year-old Marieme lives in a low-income suburb on the outskirts of Paris. Overburdened by her family circumstances, failures at school and the male dominance in the neighbourhood, her life takes a new direction after meeting a trio of charismatic girls who have swagger to burn. She quickly joins their gang and begins to feel empowered - for better or worse - and finds a sense of freedom through her newfound style, attitude, and friends.

A film about one perfect, glorious evening in the lives of two real-life princesses. They are Elizabeth and Margaret Windsor and the night is 8 May 1945, V-E Night. The whole of London is on the streets to celebrate the official end of World War II in Europe. It is known the young princesses, aged 19 and 14, slipped out of the palace to join the communal euphoria and went dancing at the Ritz. Directed by acclaimed director Julian Jarrold (Becoming Jane, Brideshead Revisited), A Royal Night Out is an affectionate ‘what-if’ story about the adventures Elizabeth and Margaret might have had on the joyous night that brought the whole of London together.

Starring: Kristen Stewart, Juliette Binoche

Starring: Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts

Heaven Adores You is an intimate, meditative inquiry into the life and music of Elliott Smith. By threading his music through the dense, yet often isolating landscapes of the three major cities he lived in - Portland, New York City, Los Angeles - Heaven Adores You presents a visual journey and an earnest review of the singer’s prolific songwriting and the impact it continues to have on fans, friends, and fellow musicians.

“Girlhood is a mesmerising exercise in the enlightenment that can happen when a filmmaker shifts the male cinematic gaze ever so slightly and uncovers what looks like a whole new world.” Washington Post

A privileged glimpse into the initiation of artistic director Raf Simons as he produced his first haute couture collection for the House of Dior, Frederic Tcheng’s film is a sweeping love letter to the legendary design house.

An absurdist, surrealistic and shocking pitch-black comedy from Swedish master Roy Andersson.

Ingrid has recently lost her sight. Increasingly confined to her apartment, she relies on a laptop as her sole creative outlet. Ingrid has a boundless imagination and her world is soon populated with a variety of characters, from a voyeuristic singleton addicted to internet porn (shown in all its explicit glory), to a clueless husband who practically stumbles into an affair. However, the lines quickly blur between fact and fiction in this inventive, challenging and powerful debut from Eskil Vogt. DIOR AND I

A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT (15) With English Subtitles Dir: Ana Lily Amirpour United States 2014 101m Starring: Sheila Vand, Arash Marandi

In the fictitious Iranian ghost town of Bad City, a lonely, hijab-wearing female vampire stalks the streets by night in search of prey. Handsome Arash would leave town if it wasn’t for his dying junkie father and the debt he owes. When Arash meets this enigmatic lost soul, it is the beginning of a beautiful love story. Ana Lily Amirpour’s stunning debut carries the influence of Jim Jarmusch and David Lynch as she brings a fatalistic, feminist perspective to this sly, stylish exercise in genre subversion. Glasgow Film Festival

Not far from Timbuktu, now ruled by the religious fundamentalists, Kidane lives peacefully in the dunes with his family. In town, the people suffer, powerless, from the regime of terror imposed by the Jihadists determined to control their faith. But when Kidane accidentally kills Amadou, the fisherman who slaughtered his beloved cow, he must face the new absurd laws of the foreign occupants.

Featuring a superb cast of young deaf performers, The Tribe is set in a boarding school for young deaf people, where new arrival Sergey is drawn into an institutional system of organised crime, involving robbery and prostitution. The Tribe contains no spoken dialogue, but only sign language and no subtitles and incorporates intense sexuality and violence, subverting the pieties that often attend cinema’s depiction of deaf people. Dazzlingly executed and shot in long complex takes, it is one of the outstanding discoveries of 2014.

BIKES VS CARS (CERT TBC) + INTRODUCTION

With English Subtitles

Dir: Fredrik Gertten Sweden 2014 82m

Dir: Phie Ambo Denmark 2014 98m

Climate change and never-ending gridlocks frustrate people more than ever. From bike activists in Sao Paulo and Los Angeles, fighting for safe bike lanes, to the City of Copenhagen, where forty percent commute by bike daily, Bikes vs Cars looks at both the struggle for bicyclists in a society dominated by cars, and the revolutionary changes that could take place if more cities moved away from carcentric models. John Long, Development Director at Blueprint, a company that specialises in the development of sustainable homes and workspaces and a founder of the UK Green Film Festival, will introduce this screening.

Eighty-year-old scientist and farmer Niels is always seeking the most efficient ways to adhere to natural biological processes on his biodynamic farm. He supplies the country’s most prestigious restaurants, including NOMA and Restaurant Julian. But what Niels considers the only humane approach to farming is not very popular with Danish officials. Director Phie Ambo highlights the importance of the kinship of people and animals, which in today’s industrialised farming is completely lost, opening a broader debate about methods of farming and breeding.

THE LAST MOOSE OF AOLUGUYA (CERT TBC) + DIRECTOR’S Q&A

Dir: Ray Pascoe United Kingdom 2014 76m

“I want to put the record where blokes can’t get at it’” - this was the personal mission statement of Alf Engers, the rider known in cycling time-trialling circles as ‘The King’. Engers was determined to achieve something unique, and spent ten years of his life chasing the dream of the 30mph timetrial, a dream that became reality in 1978. Advised cert 15. We are pleased to welcome Alf Engers to Broadway. He will discuss his career with Ray Pascoe after the screening.

With English Subtitles Dir: Tao Gu China 2013 99m

The award-winning filmmaker Tao Gu has spent the last several years exploring life among the Ewenkis, an ethnic minority in north-eastern China, whose fate suddenly changed when the government in 2003 introduced a ban on hunting and forcefully displaced the group to a reservation. Since then, most Ewenkis have turned to the bottle. This is also true for the protagonist of this both heartbreaking and absurdly funny film, Weijia. CPH.DOX We are pleased to welcome director Tao Gu to Broadway to take part in a post-screening Q&A.

SUMMER FILM COURSES DON’T PANIC! IT’S JUST A MOVIE

SCREENWRITING: INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

1970S HOLLYWOOD + THE NEW WAVE

Duration: 90m A beginner’s guide to film and the politics of film, examining the media and moral panic, referencing cinematic controversies such as A Clockwork Orange, The Exorcist and more modern examples such as The Interview. We will also explore the direct effects debate, hegemony and Marxist theory in relation to Hollywood and film industry ideology in a world where more and more media outlets are owned by fewer and fewer people. Tutor: Andrew Graves Duration: 6 Weeks Tuesday evenings commencing Tuesday 5th May, 7-8.30PM £40 / £30 concs & membs

Duration: 150m The time has come to dust off that film story and turn it into a script. If you already have a grasp of basic screenwriting skills then this course is your next step. Over an 8 week period of workshops and tutoring you will be guided through the processes of developing your story idea into a 5 page feature treatment or a first draft screenplay for your short. Between times you will need time to write if you are to get the most from this course. You will already have an idea in synopsis form, and will understand what is meant by Character, Story, Film Structure and Plot. Tutor: Graham Lester George Duration: 8 weeks Wednesday evenings commencing 6th May, 6.30-9PM £130 / £100 concs & membs

Duration: 90m Beginning in the late 1960s - when the bloated Hollywood studio system was on its last legs - this six-week course will explore the directors + films of the 1970s ‘Hollywood New Wave’ including Robert Altman, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and Hal Ashby. American films of the 1970s ranged from hippie road movies to paranoid political thrillers; along the way they rethought Westerns, musicals, and gangster films in a quickly changing social landscape. The course will also look at the influence of the American war in Vietnam, the Nixon presidency, and the counter-culture movement on Hollywood movies of the period. Tutor: Christina Newland Duration: 6 weeks Monday evenings commencing 1st June 2015, 7-8.30PM £40 / £30 concs & membs

AND THE WINNER IS... There will be laughter and there will be tears. There will also be tea and biscuits.

There will be laughter and there will be tears. There will also be tea and biscuits. UK GREEN FILM FESTIVAL

(CERT TBC)

UK GREEN FILM FESTIVAL

(CERT TBC)
