Ravishing and deeply felt, Sunset Song is the latest film from British screenwriter and director Terence Davies. Adapted from Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s classic novel, it’s set in coastal Aberdeenshire on the eve of World War I. Agyness Deyn gives an excellent performance as Chris Guthrie, the teenage daughter in a farming family ruled by an oppressive, violent father; and when tragedy strikes, she finds a curious liberty in the dissolution of their family. Beautifully filmed, it has plenty of Davies’ usual nostalgia and impressionistic grace, but also depicts the grim realities of life in this rural world; making this a uniquely powerful picture. ICO

Gerry is an addicted gambler, a man who can’t keep away from the poker table despite the mountains of debt he’s accumulated. He meets the charismatic Curtis, who agrees to stake him on a trip to a legendary Mississippi poker game, where they dream of the fortune that awaits them.

Peggy Guggenheim – Art Addict offers a rare look into Guggenheim’s world: blending the abstract, the colourful, the surreal and the salacious, to portray a life that was as complex and unpredictable as the artwork Peggy revered and the artists she pushed forward.

Starring: Harrison Ford, John Boyega

The unprecedented victories of Lance Armstrong were shockingly undermined when, in 2012, it was revealed that he had spent his career undergoing the most sophisticated doping program in the history of cycling. This docu-drama from director Stephen Frears and writer John Hodge (Trainspotting) stars Ben Foster as the seven-time Tour de France champion, and Chris O’Dowd as David Walsh, the journalist who struggled for years to bring Armstrong’s transgressions to light.

Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend. While travelling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of. Family matinee prices apply.

In 1975 Brian Clough had gone from being football’s most exciting young manager to being seen as impossible to work with. His only offer of work came from a run-down, second division club, Nottingham Forest whose brief glory days in the 1950s were seen as well behind them. With interviews from every player of that remarkable time, I Believe in Miracles tells how Clough pulled off the greatest team story ever told.

“A bittersweet, beautifully textured road movie that plays like a conscious throwback to the lost souls and open highways of 1970s American cinema.” Variety

BRINGING UP BABY!

SUN 27 – THU 31

MISSISSIPPI GRIND (15)

This funny and poignant mothergranddaughter story stars Lily Tomlin as Elle, a recently widowed - and somewhat cynical - academic. When her teenage granddaughter, Sage, comes to her for help, the two set out on a daylong road trip that forces them to face Elle’s past and Sage’s future head-on. Anchored by Tomlin’s tour-de-force performance, Grandma is the story of two women, from different generations, finding common ground and is an honest look at female relationships of all kinds.

When her deepening friendship with fellow worker and activist Violet fuels her sense of injustice, she commits to the suffrage cause.

Hollywood has often been a place of refuge for directors on the run from oppressive regimes but in turn, some had to flee Hollywood during the Communist witch-hunts. Our latest Wednesday afternoon course will focus on ten directors who have left their native countries for various reasons, political or economic, and look at the ways in which they adapted and how their homelands continued to enrich and influence their work. From: Wednesday 13th January 10 weeks Time: 2pm-4pm Tutor: Alan Seaman £70 full /£50 members + concs

Love watching and talking about films? This course involves exactly that. Omar takes over his uncle’s dilapidated launderette and employs his school friend Johnny, a hard-case with a neoNazi past. As ‘Powders’ gets close to launch, the chemistry between them, and the social tensions at play, start to boil over. Hanif Kureishi’s fearless screenplay broke new ground and stoked controversy around issues of sexuality, race, class and generational conflict and provided Daniel Day-Lewis with his breakthrough role.

Joan Fontaine gives the greatest performance of her career as the tragic heroine in this masterpiece set in turn of the century Vienna.

With English Subtitles

Panto! is a hilarious, heartfelt and heartbreaking documentary portrait of the longest running and lowest budget pantomime – filmed right here in Hockley at the Nottingham Arts Theatre. Advised certificate: 12A

Dir: Alexei German Russia 2013 177m

With exclusive access to his extraordinary unseen and unheard personal archive including hundreds of hours of audio recorded over the course of his life, this is the definitive Marlon Brando cinema documentary. Charting his exceptional career as an actor and his extraordinary life away from the stage and screen with Brando himself as your guide, the film will fully explore the complexities of the man by telling the story uniquely from Marlon’s perspective, entirely in his own voice.

Starring: Tilda Swinton, Francesca Faridany

From the National Gallery, London. Francisco Goya is Spain’s most celebrated artist and considered the father of modern art. His genius is reappraised in a landmark exhibition at The National Gallery, London. Through a great collection of unique works and Goya’s letters, we reflect upon the man himself and the world he painted. Goya is an artist whose powerful vision and technical prowess makes him one of the most admired icons of the artistic world.

SUN 27, 1PM

Starring: Leonid Yarmolnik, Yuriy Tsurilo

The final project of Russian filmmaker Aleksei Yuryevich German, Hard To Be A God is a philosophical science-fiction epic inspired by the 1964 cult novel written by brothers Boris and Arkady Strugatsky. Set on a planet stuck in the Dark Ages, it depicts a black and white world filled with violence, filth and crudeness, standing in as a metaphor for our own times. Nearly finished at the time of his death in 2013, the Russian director’s magnum opus was completed with the assistance of his son and wife.

CASABLANCA (U) Dir: Michael Curtiz USA 1942 98m Starring: Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman

Half the world can repeat half the dialogue of Curtiz’s great wartime romance, and half of Hollywood’s scriptwriters worked on it. The film still works beautifully and cinema’s greatest ‘accidental masterpiece.’

This screening marks the 200th anniversary of Ada Byron Lovelace’s birth. In this award-winning film (which was the first to use “virtual sets”), Tilda Swinton embodies Lady Ada Lovelace, daughter of Romantic poet Lord Byron and the mathematics genius who developed what became the world’s first computer language one hundred years before computers were invented. Advised Cert 15.

Laurel & Hardy return to the big screen with this double bill seeing them try their luck in the fish business, and in the western town of Brushwood Gulch.

A wonderful, spellbinding film about two angels moving invisibly in the world of mortals, listening to their thoughts and fears and offering heavenly solace.

Dir: Jeanie Finlay UK 2014 85m

Dir: Stephen Frears UK 1985 97m

Dir: Wim Wenders Germany 1987 122m

Starring: Saeed Jaffrey, Daniel Day-Lewis

A wonderful, spellbinding film about two angels moving invisibly in the world of mortals, listening to their thoughts and fears and offering heavenly solace.

HARD TO BE A GOD (18)

Dir: Jeanie Finlay UK 2014 85m
