Director Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood) reunites with Daniel Day-Lewis for what is reportedly the actor’s final film. In glamorous 1950s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock and his sister Cyril are at the centre of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars and members of high society. As a confirmed bachelor, women drift in and out of Reynolds’ life until he encounters a young, strong-willed woman, Alma, who quickly becomes his muse and lover. An illuminating portrait of a fastidious artist on a creative journey and the intoxicating nature of love.

In a new adaptation of R.C. Sherriff’s celebrated play, a group of British officers, led by the mentally disintegrating young officer Stanhope, variously await their fate in a dugout in Aisne on the tense eve of the 1918 Spring Offensive.

Colin Firth stars in the extraordinary true story of amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst and his attempt to win the first non-stop single-handed round-the-world yacht race in 1968. The story of Crowhurst’s dangerous solo voyage and the struggles he confronted on the epic journey while his wife Claire and children waited for his return at home is one of the most enduring mysteries of recent times.

From master storyteller Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) comes a truly magical and thrilling fairytale set in 1960s Baltimore at the height of the Cold War. Whilst working as a caretaker at a government research facility, the mute and isolated Elisa finds her life changed forever when she discovers the lab’s classified secret experiment – a mysterious, scaled creature from South America living in a water tank. A B-movie flavoured fantasy with imagination and enormous heart.

Set at the dawn of time, when prehistoric creatures roamed the earth, the latest big screen adventure from Aardman Animations (Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep) tells the story of courageous caveman hero Dug and his best friend Hognob as they unite his tribe against a mighty enemy, Lord Nooth and his Bronze Age City, to save their home. Featuring the voices of Eddie Redmayne and Tom Hiddleston. [Family Matinee Prices Apply]

Despite his family’s ban on music, Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colourful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events, and with the help of charming trickster Hector, sets off on a journey to unlock the real story behind his family’s history. [Family Matinee Prices Apply]

Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson navigates the pressures and constraints of Catholic school, life in Sacramento and her critical mother, in Greta Gerwig’s solo directorial debut. Incredibly personal and immensely relatable, Lady Bird is sure to be one of the defining coming-of-age films of its generation. TIFF

In 1994, the figure-skating world was rocked by a brutal attack on US medal hopeful Nancy Kerrigan. The more shocking news was that the attack was allegedly conceived and executed by those close to - and perhaps including rival figure skater Tonya Harding. Margot Robbie stars as the controversial Tonya Harding in this alternately tragic, hilarious and absurd look at one of the biggest scandals in US sports history.

Screened to complement March’s Nottingham Puppet Festival, this 1926 German film is considered by many to be the first animated feature. The silhouette animation, primitive and utterly sophisticated at the same time, involves Aladdin and his lamp, a magical horse, a sorcerer and an ogress - in mesmerising fashion.

In the midst of a difficult separation, Boris and Zhenya are so entirely consumed by their mutual dislike and their eagerness to start anew, that they literally lose sight of their 12-year-old son, Alyosha. As the couple realises their son has gone missing, they must find a way to work together and put aside their personal aspirations to find him.

THU 1, 10.15AM & 1.30PM

Screened to complement March’s Nottingham Puppet Festival, this 1926 German film is considered by many to be the first animated feature. The silhouette animation, primitive and utterly sophisticated at the same time, involves Aladdin and his lamp, a magical horse, a sorcerer and an ogress - in mesmerising fashion.

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME (15)

Starring: Nakhane Touré, Bongile Mantsai

Starring: Harris Dickinson, Madeline Weinstein

Dir: Luca Guadagnino Italy/France 2017 132m

Xolani, a lonely factory worker, joins the men of his community at a camp in the mountains of South Africa’s Eastern Cape to initiate a group of teenage boys into manhood with an annual Xhosa ritual. When a defiant young initiate from the city casts suspicion on Xolani’s sexuality, his entire existence begins to unravel. A dark, stirring and visually breathtaking variation on the coming-of age narrative. The Wound will be released in the UK in April 2018.

Frankie, a bored teenager living in Brooklyn, regularly haunts the Coney Island boardwalk with his friends, hanging around the beach and showing off to girls. But he spends his nights cruising for sex, connecting with older men he meets online and exploring desires he doesn’t yet fully understand. Sensuously lensed on 16mm by cinematographer Hélène Louvart, Beach Rats presents a colourful and textured world roiling with secret appetites and youthful self-discovery.

It’s 1983 and 17-year-old Elio is spending the summer at his family’s villa in hot, sun-kissed northern Italy. But his days of swimming, playing with friends and soaking up the sun are disrupted by the arrival of his father’s research assistant, 20-something Oliver. Though initially irritated by Oliver’s presence, Elio soon becomes hopelessly and giddily smitten.

This special programme features a selection of the very best films from the 2017 festival held in November. Tickets: £12/£10 memb+conc

In the wake of the most momentous event in modern British political history, director Timothy George Kelly travelled the length of the UK, speaking to people on both sides of the Brexit divide. This special programme features a selection of the very best films from the 2017 festival held in November. Tickets: £12/£10 memb+conc

In the wake of the most momentous event in modern British political history, director Timothy George Kelly travelled the length of the UK, speaking to people on both sides of the Brexit divide. What emerges is a powerful, insightful, often emotive portrait of a divided nation, still uncertain about what the future holds. Making a conscious effort to hear from people holding wildly opposing views, Kelly’s film subtly mines issues of class, environment, landscape and opportunity, in a potent and timely snapshot of Brexit Britain.

BREXITANNIA (12A) + Q&A

Every autumn, Kendal, on the edge of the Lake District, hosts the most prestigious Mountain Film Festival in the UK, attracting film premieres from around the world.
