In the latter years of Hollywood’s Golden Age, studio fixer Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) races to collect ransom money to rescue his kidnapped superstar actor (George Clooney). With an all-star cast this promises to be the Coens’ most visually ambitious film to date.

Starring: Brigitte Bardot, Michel Piccoli

Dir: Ken Jones France/USA 2015 RT TBC

Starring: David Thewlis, Jennifer Jason Leigh

Starring: Roberto Farías, Antonia Zegers

In 1962 Hitchcock and Truffaut locked themselves away in Hollywood for a week to discuss the secrets behind the miseen-scène in cinema. Based on the original recordings of this meeting used to produce the mythical book ‘Hitchcock/Truffaut’ - this film illustrates the greatest cinema lesson of all time and pulls us into the world of the creator of Psycho, The Birds, and Vertigo.

Janis Joplin, one of the most revered and iconic rock & roll singers of all time, blazed new creative trails before her death in 1971 at age 27. Director Amy Berg examines Joplin’s story in depth for the first time on film, presenting an intimate and insightful portrait of a complicated, driven, often beleaguered artist.

Starring: Catherine Frot, André Marcon

A sumptuously stylish study of a rocky marriage, Godard’s unusually straightforward adaptation of a novel by Moravia is also his most hauntingly beautiful film. BFI

A twisted, high energy tale centred on rumour, infidelity, prostitution and bar fights, Tangerine is so much more than just a film shot on an iPhone.

In this pitch-perfect comedy of manners, a shameless chanteuse with a surplus of money and a shortage of talent buys her way into the spotlight, exposing the hypocrisy of her social circle in the process. Inspired by screechy American soprano Florence Foster Jenkins, this splendid satire strikes just the right note.

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival, this unsettling drama from director Pablo Larraín (No) centres on a group of disgraced Catholic priests sequestered in a beach house. The tranquillity of their anonymous daily routine is disturbed when a young man materialises with charges of abuse. The priests’ reaction to this unwanted interloper carries echoes of their institution’s shocking past.

Company commander Claus Michael Pedersen and his men are stationed in an Afghan province. Meanwhile, back in Denmark, Claus’ wife Maria is trying to hold life together with a husband at war and three children missing their father. During a routine mission, the soldiers are caught in heavy crossfire and in order to save his men, Claus makes a decision that has grave consequences for him and his family back home.

Dir: Hsiao-hsien Hou Taiwan 2015 106m

A beautiful assassin is sent to kill the powerful lord who was once her betrothed, in this sumptuous martial-arts epic.

We all are self-obsessed, but customer service guru David Stone is especially so. As he settles in his hotel room and orders room service, it becomes clear that there’s something wrong with the world around him. Using stop-motion puppetry, Charlie Kaufman teams up with animator Duke Johnson to tell a unique but relatable tale of isolation, connection and interior life. With a remarkable script and killer voice performances from Jennifer Jason Leigh and David Thewlis Anomalisa is as unique and idiosyncratic as its title suggests. AFI FEST

From the freedom songs of the ’60s and hits like “I’ll Take You There” in the ’70s, to funked-up collaborations with Prince and her recent albums with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, Mavis has stayed true to her roots and inspired millions along the way.

“The Witch is one of the most genuinely unnerving horror films in recent memory because Eggers has the guts to earn your fear.” Time Out New York

A savage and utterly brilliant satire of both 1960s social idealism and the Thatcherite values that undermined it, High Rise opens with a dishevelled man eating barbecued dog on the balcony of his trashed apartment, some 25 floors up. Director Ben Wheatley (Sightseers) tears into JG Ballard’s classic source novel with brutal gusto. BFI

See page 10 for details.

With English Subtitles Dir: Tobias Lindholm Denmark 2015 113m Starring: Pilou Asbæk, Tuva Novotny

AFI FEST

Mavis! is the first documentary on gospel/soul music legend and civil rights icon Mavis Staples and her family group, The Staple Singers.

BFI

A beautiful assassin is sent to kill the powerful lord who was once her betrothed, in this sumptuous martial-arts epic.

We all are self-obsessed, but customer service guru David Stone is especially so.

AFI FEST

Mavis! is the first documentary on gospel/soul music legend and civil rights icon Mavis Staples and her family group, The Staple Singers.

BFI

AFI FEST

Mavis! is the first documentary on gospel/soul music legend and civil rights icon Mavis Staples and her family group, The Staple Singers.

BFI

AFI FEST

MAVIS! (PG) Dir: Jessica Edwards USA 2015 81m

Mavis! is the first documentary on gospel/soul music legend and civil rights icon Mavis Staples and her family group, The Staple Singers.

BFI

AFI FEST

Mavis! is the first documentary on gospel/soul music legend and civil rights icon Mavis Staples and her family group, The Staple Singers.

BFI

HIGH RISE PREVIEW + Q&A WITH DIRECTOR BEN WHEATLEY

Eburi is a lowly salaryman who drunkenly promises two magazine editors that he will write them a masterpiece. Once sober, Eburi commits himself to his promise and decides to write a novella using himself and his middle class life as the theme. Featuring animation and audacious editing, this idiosyncratic and inventive film is a timeless treatment of life in postwar Japan. Advised Cert 12A

A young girl had her voice magically taken away so that she would never hurt people with it, but her outlook changes when she encounters music and friendship. A charming and original animated film which was a huge hit in Japan, touching many hearts across the country. Advised Cert PG

This heartfelt human drama about a woman’s journey to independence features home cuisine created by food stylist Nami Iijima whose simple but appetising creations have also appeared in films such as Kamome Diner and Chef of the South Pole. It is guaranteed to whet your appetite! Advised Cert PG

When shop owner Hikaru learns that a group of local high school students have no place to practice music, he decides to build a studio beneath his store allowing them to play there. This film depicts the incredible true story of Hikaru Nakasone, a man who devoted the last days of his life to helping youngsters who felt as if they had nowhere to go. Advised Cert PG

Directed by Keisuke Kinoshita, considered to be one of the most important directors of Japanese cinema in the 1950s, this film is a bleak portrait of post war Japan. Through masterfully interspersing his film with verité-styled flashbacks and newsreel footage, Kinoshita creates an insightful account of the personal toll of war and the slow, painful process of recovery. Advised Cert 15

In 2010, or maybe 2011, it’s hard to be certain about these things, I wrote and performed a show called It’s Always Right Now, Until It’s Later. I originally performed it in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival at the Traverse Theatre every morning at 10.30 before restaging it at St Anns Warehouse in New York, The National Theatre in London and The Royal Exchange in Manchester. This film was made on one single night towards the end of the Manchester run and is the entire show, in real time. Daniel Kitson - January 17th 2016 Tickets: £10 full / £8 conc

Drawing on social issues in Japan surrounding its ageing population, this sweet and heart-warming story focuses on the touching relationship between a son and his elderly mother, played by the then 89-year-old Harue Akagi. Directed by Azuma Morisaki, a master of socially conscious films and Japan’s oldest active filmmaker working today, the story topped both ‘best of’ lists for Japan’s two most famous film magazines in 2013, Eiga Geijutsu and Kinema Junpo.

I originally performed it in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival at the Traverse Theatre every morning at 10.30 before restaging it at St Anns Warehouse in New York, The National Theatre in London and The Royal Exchange in Manchester.
