For a glowing marry-me look, go for rosy hues with a touch of sparkle. Start by blending (1) Benefit Hello Happy Flawless Brightening Foundation onto skin to brighten your complexion. Sweep the tops of your cheekbones with ( 2 ) BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter for a hint of glitter and a sun-kissed sheen.

For the perfect bridal flush, brush (3) Tarte Double Duty Beauty Busy Gal Blush onto your cheeks. Apply directly below cheekbones to achieve a natural-looking flush. To finish, get kiss-ready by swiping (4 ) Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Fia onto your lips. The long-lasting formula ensures the rosy color won’t smudge for the big moment.

Q&A

ANSWERS

wedding

Straight talk, smart solutions by Diane Forden, Editor in Chief

Q

Two of my bridesmaids live out-of-state. Should I pay for their flights to and from my wedding?

A

Oakland, California

your relationship and answer any questions he might have. Creating and writing a good toast takes effort, forethought and practice so invite him to collect funny, sweet or meaningful stories about you and your fiancé from your families and friends. That said, as long as his speech is heartfelt and includes a little humor and sentimentality you needn’t worry.

You’re not required to pick up your attendants’ travel expenses, nor are you expected to pay for any of their accommodations. You should, however, be mindful of how easily expenses can add up. After all, they are expected to contribute to the cost of the bridal shower, give both shower and wedding gifts and purchase a dress and accessories. They will probably also chip in on a bachelorette party for you. With that in mind, you might want to make arrangements for your two attendants to stay with you, with another member of the wedding party or with a friend or relative who may offer to have them stay in their homes. Discuss travel costs with your bridesmaids now so there are no misunderstandings about who’s going to pay later on. If the costs prove to be too much of a burden for them you can always contribute to their expenses as a gift for being in the wedding party.

The maid of honor’s role takes precedence so she signs the marriage certificate along with the best man. The lineup for the processional is as follows: Bridesmaids and groomsmen (optional) enter first followed by the matron of honor and then the maid of honor. The flower girl then walks down the aisle right before the bride and her dad enter. It’s also acceptable to have the maid of honor and matron of honor walk side-by-side rather than separately.

TOAST TIPS

BOTTLED UP

My fiancé’s best man is a great guy but a bit unpredictable. I’m a little worried about the type of toast he may give. Any advice?

My fiancé and I are providing the alcohol for our wedding. For 75 guests, how many bottles of red and white wine and champagne should we purchase? Sarasota, Florida

Q

A

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Be open and honest about your expectations right from the start. You and your fiancé should make time to get together with the best man to discuss his speech and your vision for the wedding. Make it clear that you’d like his toast to highlight the positive qualities of

MAIDS OF HONOR

Q

I’m having both a maid of honor and a matron of honor. What is their order in the processional and who signs the marriage certificate? Newark, Delaware

A

Q

A

Good question. Most couples don’t have any idea how many drinks per guest are needed. Here’s a guideline: One bottle of wine or champagne provides about five to six glasses and most guests will probably drink no more than two glasses per hour. So, depending on the

time of day (guests are apt to drink more at an evening wedding) and your crowd (are they party people or a more subdued bunch?), you can figure on about 25 bottles each of champagne, red wine and white wine for 75 quests. You’ll also want to have plenty of soft drinks and water on hand (a liter for every three or four guests) and lots of ice. And ask your reception site manager if there’s a corkage fee— some places charge up to $10 per bottle just for opening and serving beverages that you provide. Finally, request that both opened and unopened bottles are returned to you after the wedding. FOOD ALERT

Q

We plan on serving beer, wine, sandwiches, salads and wedding cake at our afternoon reception. How should we let our guests know not to expect a full Cedar Rapids, Iowa sit-down meal?

A

It’s considerate to inform your guests about the type of meal they’ll be served so they can plan accordingly. On your wedding invitation, below the reception location information, state Light refreshments will be served. You and your fiancé can also spread the word to family and friends beforehand. ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. And send your planning questions to us at mail@bridalguide.com.

MIA RILEY Off-the-shoulder bell sleeve, sequined lace midriff top, about $375 and floral lace skirt, about $599.

DESERT DREAM Gorgeous lace accents, soft fabrications and easy silhouettes ’s stunning encompass Scott Lu’s new collection for Mia Riley.

What was the inspiration for the collection? Most of the inspiration is based on the beauty of the Southern California area. I wanted the new collection to draw its energy from the natural surroundings of the place I call home; from the ocean breeze through the wildflowers of the summer to the sunset celebrations on the shore, I wanted the dresses to reflect that energy.

Crepe halter neckline gown with open back and chapel train, about $800.

Tell us more about the local and global organizations that Mia Riley sales proceeds support? What motivated this initiative?

By donating a portion of our sales we are working to ensure that all women are lifted and empowered in society. We have partnered with charities in such a way that the bride controls where she wants her donation to go. We also work with a homeless women’s shelter by donating necessities to women living there.

HEAT WAVE TOP LEFT: Fit and flare three-quarter sleeve lace and chiffon gown, about $900. ABOVE: Scalloped lace jacket, about $220.

What are some of the biggest trends you are seeing now in bridal fashion? The longer I am in

this industry the more I am realizing that trends no longer dictate bridal fashion as much as they used to. It’s one of the few spaces where I feel like the focus is on the couple celebrating their love and not what’s in style or on the runway. That being said, I do see more of a trend revolving around comfort. Soft fabrics, breathable linings, comfortable silhouettes and textured lace are becoming much more of a focus.

Relaxed fit and flare satin gown, about $700 and scalloped lace jacket, about $220.

How do you create affordable gowns without sacrificing quality? The Mia Riley team has over 20

years of experience under their collective belt. Through our relationships with dressmakers, fabric and lace creators, and a collaborative design team, we’re able to ensure SHEER that we can provide a luxurious gown without having ELEGANCE to make a sacrifice to the celebration budget. What’s the best thing about being a bridal designer? I’m lucky to be able to do something

I love. I have developed such a passion for it. It’s an immense honor to be a part of creating something that celebrates love, and watching the journey of a dress is spectacular. From sketch, to samples, to changes, it’s very exciting to be part of that journey.—Anna Smutny

TIPS

RUN PRACTICE Make the most of your pre-wedding beauty trials with these tried-and-tested expert tips. by Anna Smutny

1

CHOOSE YOUR PROS WISELY

There is no one-size-fits all beauty stylist. Make a list of the ones you are interested in and check out their social media to see if the past looks they’ve done are ones you would like on yourself. If you want a more subdued look but the artist sticks to bold, colorful styles, they might not be the one for you.

be specific about why you like it. Taking inspiration from social media is always helpful and creating a Pinterest board never hurts. Pulling from the big screen works as well. “I like to recommend watching older movies or period pieces,” says hair and makeup stylist Amanda Shackleton. “It’s a great way to get inspiration from generations past that we can modernize and bring into the current year.”

3. SPEAK UP During the trial, specifying what you don’t like is just as important as pointing out what you do like. “If you do not like any color on the lips, be open about it,” says makeup artist Sally Duvall. “A trial should include input from the bride as well as the artist.”

4

5. COME PREPARED

Be ready with pictures of your dress to ensure the look works with it. Don’t forget to bring any accessories that may be worn for the big day. A halfup half-down hairstyle might look stunning during the trial, but wearing a veil on the big day may completely alter the look.

6

8. PLAN AHEAD

After getting engaged, setting a date for a beauty trial may be the last thing on your mind, but don’t put it off. Most stylists recommend setting a trial date right away to ensure they aren’t booked on the same day and to have the trial around three months before the big day.

9. DISCUSS PRICE

Beauty trials can range anywhere from $100 to $400 depending on the stylist. Take into account the cost of a trial if you plan on having different ones or need to have another if the first one isn’t great. Keep in mind the day-of service will cost more than the trial.

SNAP PICS “I always take tons of photos of each look so

the bride can see how it photographs,” says makeup artist David Maderich. “I do three versions of the look, each with more makeup, and photograph the style—because at the end of the day, all that remains are the photos.” It’s a good idea to write down the product names and shades.

GO CLEAN WASH YOUR FACE AND HAIR BEFOREHAND TO ENSURE THAT THE STYLIST CAN DO THEIR JOB SMOOTHLY AND GET THE LOOK RIGHT SO YOU ARE BOTH SATISFIED.

7

BUDDY UP “The trial is for getting to know each other and is about communication as much as it is about the skills of the stylist,” says bridal hair stylist Lauren Decosimo. “This is a collaborative effort. Once I get to know my bride’s personality and we talk about what she likes, I can make suggestions.”

10

DO YOU Your

wedding day is not the time to experiment. Opt for a hair and makeup look that feels the most you and have the stylist give it a little glam. “I always take the approach of less is more,” says lead makeup artist for Elcie Cosmetics, Angie Mikaelian. “If a bride desires more drama, I can always add, which is much easier than removing, for a more natural look.”

Q&A

DEAR DAVID The star of Lifetime’s “My Great Big Live Wedding with David Tutera” answers your pressing reception questions.

What’s the best way to incorporate children from a previous marriage into a wedding?

Some ideas: Have your children escort you down the aisle (as long as they’re not too little) or, of course, be your best man or maid of honor. Another great tradition that I have begun to see in my clients’ weddings is a vow exchange between husband and wife followed by exchange of vows with the children, to bring everyone together into a single family unit. Another idea is to create a family first dance: After the couple has their first dance together, the children join them, forming a circle for the next dance.

Q

I’m planning my daughter’s wedding and want to know what you’d say are the numberone reception dos and don’ts.

A

The number one do is making sure your guests are dancing and having fun! And the number one don’t is making sure that no one is sitting down for too long eating, with lulls of time in between dancing and dinner—that’s very, very important.

Q A

Can you really have a beautiful wedding on a small budget?

Absolutely! An abundance of flickering candles is an easy and inexpensive way to replace more costly flowers. And a fun, fabulous cocktail party instead of a sit-down dinner party is another great way to have a festive celebration without straining the catering budget. Finally, lowering your guest count

will always help you achieve more dream wedding-like results on a limited budget.

Q

A

What are four quick ways to make your event special?

One: Tell the story of who you are as a bride and groom throughout your party—via music, cuisine, color and other details—to make your wedding more special and personalized. Two: Create an environment. You don’t have to have a theme to have a great wedding. You have to have a style, which means color and essence. So think sense of style—Tuscan, French—rather than full-on theme. Three: Make sure something different is happening every 30 minutes. It may mean the food might change, the music might change or the entertainment might change. Which brings me to Four, making sure that people feel as if they are moving, i.e., going from ceremony to cocktails to dinner and to an after-party vs. sitting down in one location for too much time. This will help keep the energy level high and the event going strong—as well as make your wedding feel bigger and even more fun.

Q

When having a wedding what are some ways to remember loved ones who are no longer with us?

A

A celebratory dance or a memorial note on your wedding program are nice ways to remember those who are no longer with us. (For example, on the

TUTERA TIP: Keep it moving. That’s my number one rule for success. Once your first dance is done, get your guests out on the floor! program, you could say “We lovingly remember family members who are with us today in spirit.”) A few things I wouldn’t suggest are a moment of silence—and certainly not an area where there is an open seat. You want to convey positive feelings and not bring any of your guests’ or your own emotions or energy down.

Q

Any tips for jazzing up a smaller wedding to achieve a higher-end illusion and maybe save some money?

A

The three key things for any successful event are, first, making sure you provide comfort for your guests: that means ample food and drink. Second, making sure that you have great entertainment. This need not mean an orchestra or band. Hire a fabulous DJ or go more DIY and put together a great music playlist on Spotify for your guests to enjoy. Third is the visual aspect: This doesn’t have to mean masses of pricey floral arrangements; it could be a colorful, stylish overall look to your tabletops and buffets. These simple tips are universal, whether you’re on a small, medium or large budget. 

his wedding’s pairing of periwinkle blue with peach and blush pink was a tribute to the wedding locale. “The bride was just really inspired by Charleston itself,” says wedding planner and designer Samantha Anderson of Samantha Anderson Events in Charleston, South Carolina. “A lot of our architecture here, especially downtown, is colorful, like the homes on Rainbow Row. 3 It’s so beautiful.” For the intimate gathering at Gadsden House, a historic home turned event space, most guests traveled from Georgia, and hospitality was top of mind. Guests were invited to the spring nuptials with monogrammed stationery and were also given a watercolor map of the destination. The bride and groom exchanged vows in front of a gate covered with boxwoods and cascades of roses, peonies, amaryllis and other blooms—a stunning backdrop. Throughout the decor, tones of blue and pink created a striking contrast, and a variety of other decor selections made a juxtaposing statement. “We got to incorporate a lot of new, modern ideas but keep the feel of a traditional southern wedding,” says Anderson. “It made the event super fun and lighthearted.” For example, at reception tables, antique-style blue water goblets looked classic, while gold flatware lent table settings a contemporary edge. Colorful Amalfi-style plates made a bold statement without being overly fussy. The cake was given an unexpected update by switching up the bottom tier to a hexagon and decorating the fondant with a blue marble effect with edible gold flecks. “The bride and groom said, ‘Let’s do something different,’ ” says Anderson. “It was a breath of fresh air.” ➺

his Utah bride’s oatmeal-hued gown hid a colorful secret: A petticoat of tulle in varying shades of purple. So of course, that became the jumping off point for the wedding’s color scheme. The couple married in the fall, so purple, plum and lavender were made autumnal by adding peach and gold. This earthy mix, in turn, complimented the mountain-view setting, High Star Ranch. “It poured rain that day,” says Michelle Leo Cousins, owner and lead designer of Michelle Leo Events. “Between the color scheme and the weather, it was a really romantic, subdued kind of a setting. It was actually perfect.” The rustic space was dressed up with traditional and garden roses, purple artichokes, coleus, smoke bush and amaranthus. “The bride wanted a lot of texture and layering throughout,” says Cousins. Flower arrangements in antique-style gold, footed vases and tall taper candles in varying heights added drama to tables. Guests dined on a hearty autumn-inspired feast made with local flavors. The wedding cake was decorated in light purple with a gold floral pattern and topped with fresh flowers. “I find a number of couples believe they have to pick two ‘wedding colors,’ but I tell them ‘Let’s pick color families,’ ” says Cousins. “For example, if you really love purple, let’s explore different shades of that color, so there’s tone and depth. I love infusing metallics with any color palette because I feel it provides a really great balance and then the metallic almost becomes the neutral.” ➺ 7

ress inspiration created a very glamorous result for this luxe winter wedding, held at the Four Seasons Hotel Seattle. “The bride told me she loves emerald green and she’d already found ribbon for a sash that she wanted to make for the dress,” says Aleah Valley of Valley & Company Events. The couple’s love of travel, books and a bygone era also contributed to the nostalgic look of the wedding. Green was paired with gold to glam up the ballroom, and give a nod to the Roaring ’20s. As the sun set, the couple exchanged vows under an arch decorated with unique hanging sphere lights and a swath of white and pale pink roses and greenery. Those same blooms were later reused to decorate the band’s stage at the reception. “We brought in velvet linens that felt very rich, but it wasn’t overly glitzy or forced,” says Valley. Gold chameleon-style chairs offered a modern look that felt retro and fresh at the same time. Long tables were set in a U shape, so guests could all see each other. “It made everyone feel very connected, especially because it was a smaller group of guests,” says Valley. The bonus of the seating arrangement was that no one was facing away from the musicians as they played swing music and then worked their way up to contemporary tunes as the evening unfolded. A speakeasy-style lounge was set in the middle of the room for guests to sit and sip cocktails when they weren’t dancing the night away. Between the timeless tunes and luxurious green and white details, guests were treated to a fete with the feel of the Great Gatsby era. Valley says, “Color played a big role in the way that guests experienced the day.” 

should set aside 10 to 15 percent of her overall budget for her dress. However, that should be adjusted based upon the importance of the dress to the bride. One bride’s attitude may be, “I’m only going to wear it for five hours, so I don’t want to spend a lot,” while another will say, “I want everyone to remember how fabulous I looked, so it’s of utmost importance.” You have to know how you feel in order to set your price point.

BG: What is the worst dress-shopping mistake a bride can make? MU: Not having a budget when you start is a huge mistake—and the most common one. Another big problem is not realizing that the dress isn’t the only thing you have to pay for. Headpieces and veils and jewelry are part of the equation. And don’t forget the extra fee for alterations. Your dress size will also affect the price of your gown; some designers offer up to size

16 without extra cost, but otherwise it can cost 10 to 20 percent more.

BG: If a bride comes to Kleinfeld with a photo of a dress that she can’t afford, what will the sales consultant do? MU: Our consultants try never to go over a bride’s budget, and 90 percent of brides respect that. But there are always one or two who insist on trying on that $20,000 gown. Then it becomes very difficult for her to consider anything else! It’s as if you tour a two-million-dollar house and then you look at one for one-third that much—trying on a dress you can’t afford is unrealistic and disrespectful of whoever may be planning to pay for it.

BG: What’s your advice on customizing a gown? MU: Almost every bride wants something done—more beads, a longer train, a sweetheart neckline, straps, a bolero jacket—because she wants to “make it her own.” It’s natural to want to be unique, but do be sure to figure customized work into your budget.

BG: Beading and other details will

up the cost, so it makes sense to go for a simpler dress. But what if a bride dreams of bling? MU: Compromise. Consider a belt— that’s the simplest way—or get a headpiece with bling or some dazzling jewelry. A dress doesn’t have to be the most expensive one to be beautiful.

BG: How can friends and family help—or hinder—your attempts to stay on the financial track? MU: I’ve seen a bride’s friends or family members pull dresses that are not right for her style or her budget. Only bring people with you who truly understand your budget and lifestyle.

BG: What is your best piece of advice for brides? MU: There is nothing worse than when wedding guests look at the bride and ask each other, “Who is that?” When this happens, it usually means the bride is wearing too much makeup or the wrong hairstyle or she’s chosen the wrong dress. My advice is to be yourself—the best, most beautiful version that you can possibly be for your big day. ¢

THE

GOLDEN RULES IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING THAT WEDDING PLANNING IS STRESSFUL. BUT IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THAT WAY. HERE, 10 KEY RULES TO FOLLOW.

S

ure, you want to have a fabulous big day, and with good wedding planning, you, your new husband and all your

guests are going to end up having the time of your lives. Unfortunately, there are pitfalls along the way. So take a look at these all-too-common “please don’ts.” (Psst! They’re all avoidable.) Remember: Forewarned is forearmed!

1

Don’t be superbride.

2

Don’t have a cash bar.

Forcing guests to reach into their sequinned clutches every time they want to enjoy a celebratory champagne or a refreshing gin and tonic is just plain rude. Think of it like this: You invite people to a party—your wedding, for heaven’s sake!—and then you ask them to shell out for part of the fun. It’s a recipe for bad feelings. Keep in mind that you don’t have to have a top-shelf bar; in fact, there are plenty of other ways to serve and save. You could offer wine and beer only or create a signature cocktail. You might have an open

bar during the cocktail hour only and serve wine at dinner. Ask your caterer to suggest lower-cost options.

3

Don’t include registry info on invites.

Registering is a good thing for everyone. When gift buyers are steered to the things you actually want and need, it saves them time—and saves you from having to contend with a pile of cut-crystal candy bowls. Registry info, however, does not belong on your wedding invitation. Why? Giving wedding gifts is never mandatory, though the vast majority of attendees will naturally want to do just that. The best way to get the message across is by word

of mouth on the part of your mom or your bridesmaids or on shower invites.

4

Don’t be bossy with your bridesmaids.

In the most traditional sense, your bridesmaids, in particular your maid of honor, are there to stand up for you as you take your vows, to act as witnesses to this solemn event. Somewhere along the line, bridesmaids have become essential helping hands, relied upon to do more than simply show up on the big day. These are your sisters, cousins, best friends, future in-laws, and there’s something sort of sweet about the way they gather around you, wearing finery you picked out, help-

PHOTOGRAPHY: PHOTOBYBETSY.COM

You’re smart, you’re focused, you’re energetic. But you’re still one woman. Superbrides—those engaged gals who devote every waking hour to wedding planning, brushing aside all offers of help— eventually run out of steam and end up near the big day with favors unassembled, invitations unstamped, shoes undyed, heads uncounted. How to avoid this fate? Call in your trusty sidekicks before you’re really scrambling. Here’s a little secret: People want to help. So do yourself a huge favor and accept their kind offers. Then, once you’ve got a cadre of pals stuffing your envelopes, sit back and have your toenails polished. You deserve it.

ing you pin up your bustle, holding your flowers. But some brides ask (or worse, demand) far more: They expect their bridesmaids to shell out for needlessly expensive outfits, to run endless errands, to wear their hair just so, to attend (and buy gifts for) countless all-for-you parties. Don’t let this happen. Gifts to your pals are always welcome, of course, but a little kindness and care go a lot further than any pashmina shawl or monogrammed trinket.

5

Keep to a tight weddingday timeline.

We know a bride who was set on having her wedding in a quaint wooden church in a rural area. Beautiful. But when her guests checked their invites, they saw that the reception was scheduled for much later in the day, at a location that was a good 45-minute drive from the ceremony venue. Sometimes it can be hard to plan a seamless schedule if your heart is set on sites that are wildly inconvenient to one another. but if you really must wed at, say, your childhood church, confine your search for reception locales to local spots. If that’s truly impossible or if you can’t avoid a time gap, provide transportation and/or a comfy spot for guests to hang out while they wait.

6

Don’t plan a difficult destination wedding.

Ah, the lure of the exotic faraway wedding—you can just picture it, can’t you? Exchanging vows on top of a volcano in Hawaii, or how about in a ski gondola or on a majestic slope in the Austrian Alps? Hmmm, nice idea, but will Grandma Gert be up to the trip? Will your college pals drain their bank accounts to get there? No, and no. Destination weddings can be terrific, but as with any wedding, it’s not only about you, it’s also about your guests. While some friends and families welcome (and can afford) an Alpine adventure, others will end up resenting the cost and hassle or simply decline the invitation. Make it easy for all by choosing a well-traveled locale, planning well in advance and providing information and help (securing group rates, for example). Bon voyage!

7

Don’t go DIY crazy.

You know that clever bride who sewed her own dress and made her own invitations? Or the one who baked her own cake? Everyone’s in awe of the girls who can do these things, and we say good for them—if they did it because they really wanted to, and if they managed not to get stressed out. The point of these projects is to use your craft/sewing/baking skills to save money and to put a one-ofa-kind stamp on some aspect of the wedding. But if you are really not the hands-on type, don’t drive yourself crazy hot-gluing tulle and folding fiddly favors until 3 a.m. Do only what you can, and beg, borrow or buy the rest.

8

Don’t let parents steamroll your invite list.

Back in the days when parents footed the bill and brides were barely out of high school, the guest list was more mom and dad’s idea of a good party than the couple’s. Times have changed, but that doesn’t stop some pushy parents from insisting on having the whole book club, golf club or garden club at the wedding. Brush up on your negotiating skills and start early. Once you have a budget in mind, you can rough out the number of guests it’s feasible to invite. Then ask both sets of parents for invite lists, in order of preference, so you can cut from the bottom if necessary. Stay in charge!

9

Don’t forget about your fiancé.

It may not seem like something you’d do, but plenty of women surprise themselves. We’ve got our heads stuck in a glossary of floral terms (stephanotis? anemone?) when all our men know is that there will be flowers at the wedding. We’re neglecting our regular TV and pizza night in favor of dress fittings. Hey, listen up: You’re not just having a wedding, you’re getting married—to that guy over there, sitting on the couch, munching a cold slice of pizza. Put aside the to-do lists and give him a hug, would you? This is not just partyplanning time, it’s major life transition time. So talk to each other. Talk about your life together. Talk about what color you want to paint the bedroom, what you want to name the puppy you’ll adopt. Anything but flowers and crab-cake appetizers, please.

10

Don’t bow to bridal peer pressure.

It’s insidious. You just got back from a friend’s wedding and you’re battling the green monster: She had an 8-piece band, you booked a DJ. She had Dom Perignon, you’re having sparkling wine. Well, stop right there. If you scramble your plans to best hers, you’ll go over budget and hate yourself for it. Worse, you’ll veer off the course you set for your own dream day. She made her wedding hers. You’re making your wedding yours. And that’s an “I do!”¢

And now for the good news Here, some things you must do: • PRACTICE SELF-CARE. Do whatever it takes to help you unwind. That could mean a solo hike or a night out with friends. A day off at the movies or a too-expensive-but-whocares massage. • BE ORGANIZED. It doesn’t matter whether you use a paper grocery bag or the fanciest new software. Stay organized, and sleep better at night. • STICK TO YOUR BUDGET. Early on, sit down with your fiancé and work out how much you can afford to spend and where to allot your money. Build in some room for surprises and extras that inevitably pop up. • NEGOTIATE WITH VENDORS. You don’t have to accept a quoted price. Ask if there

can be substitutions that may bring the fee down. • GET HIM INVOLVED. What are his interests? Perhaps music—give him the band or DJ assignment. If it’s food, he can research caterers. After all, the wedding belongs to the two of you! • BE GRATEFUL. You’ll get lots of good wishes, gifts and offers of help. Say thank you to each and every one. You’re feeling good right now, so share all that beautiful love. • DREAM BIG. Not just about your wedding, but about your life. This is the next, greatest chapter in the story of you. Imagine how wonderful married life can be—and you’re almost there.

WHERE DOES THE

MONEY GO? NO MATTER WHERE YOU HOLD YOUR WEDDING, YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE TO TOE THE BOTTOM LINE. HERE, PLANNERS SHARE REGIONAL BUDGET BREAKDOWNS ALONG WITH SAVINGS TIPS THAT CAN BE USED ANYWHERE.

PHOTOGRAPHY: PHOTOGRAPHYBYPAULINA.COM

BY DANIEL P. SMITH

NORTHEAST BUDGET BREAKDOWN

VENUE: 16% When deciding on the right locale, Brooklyn-based wedding planner and designer Jove Meyer calls “getting clarity on costs” the first order of business. “Some venues have no rental fee, just a food and beverage minimum, whereas others don’t do food and only make money on venue rentals.” A full-service venue that includes food, beverage, staff and space often helps the budget, Meyer says.

Average wedding cost NYC metro • $38,721*

FOOD AND BEVERAGE: 31% Outside of reducing the guest count, Meyer suggests exploring other creative cost-saving measures. For instance, forego appetizer stations in favor of passed appetizers during the cocktail hour or downsize from a fully stocked open bar to a limited bar featuring select beers and wines. PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO: 16% Meyer suggests couples book an eight-hour minimum for photo and video coverage. “But 10 hours if you want full coverage of getting ready through dancing,” he notes. Booking one company that shoots both photo and video rather than two separate teams can spur savings. ENTERTAINMENT: 5% Entertainment costs will shift dramatically if couples select a live band over a DJ. For those dead set on a band, which can cost about five times more than a DJ, Meyer recommends sticking with the core band members and being mindful of their time.

For the ceremony and cocktail hour, for example, couples might pipe in a playlist through the venue’s speakers instead of having live music. RENTALS: 16% Rentals like tables, chairs and linens can be both functional and decorative. For the budget conscious, Meyer suggests chairs that work for both the ceremony and dinner, favoring on-site rentals. And, for those really seeking savings, consider disposable dinnerware for buffets or beach weddings—chic options abound, from sustainable bamboo to glossy acrylic. “Just keep the glassware,” Meyer says. FLOWERS: 16% A living product requiring staff, storage and transportation, flower costs frequently surprise couples. Meyer offers these tips: Instead of full bouquets, have your ’maids hold a single bloom, a fan or other pretty prop, and avoid any floral arrangements that require on-site construction.

BUDGET BREAKDOWN

Average wedding cost Charlottesville VA metro • $25,808 *

VENUE: 25% Charlottesville, VA-based wedding planner Alana Futcher of Chancey Charm Weddings urges couples to take advantage of the region’s many venues capable of accommodating the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception. “You can give your guests different experiences at one location and often capture some savings, too,” she says. FOOD AND BEVERAGE: 35% Futcher recommends couples carefully review the caterer’s proposal to see if there are any menu items that require special equipment for prep or extra staff for serving—both of which add extra costs. PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO: 15% While couples might initially balk at allday coverage, Futcher often finds it’s the better way to go. “Couples often need more time and booking extra hours on the day-of instead of beforehand can be costly.” *Source: TheWeddingReport.com

ENTERTAINMENT: 7.5% Favor entertainment that performs double duty, Futcher says, such as those who can play music and serve as the evening’s emcee. Booking a band? Then, inquire about additional music options for the ceremony and cocktail hour, which will often be more affordable than bringing in a separate entertainment provider. And don’t forget to ask about the inclusion of sound systems. “You don’t want to have to rent a sound system at the last minute,” Futcher says. RENTALS: 10% As with catering, the guest count can intensify rental costs—more chairs, more linens and so on. A venue with chairs, tables and the like included in the price frequently spurs savings compared to renting such items. “See what equipment rentals are already included in your venue and, most importantly, clarify what needs to be

brought in,” Futcher says. FLOWERS: 7.5% It’s a universal, often-overlooked floralbudget truth: “The more bridesmaids and groomsmen you have, the more bouquets and boutonnieres you need,” says Futcher. “And the more guests you have, the more table centerpieces you need.” Ask the florist for ideas on what pieces from the ceremony can be repurposed for the reception—just be sure to monitor the fees for moving flowers between locations. ➺

MIDWEST BUDGET BREAKDOWN

Average wedding cost Chicago metro • $28,655*

VENUE: 15% When comparing venues, Kate Lerman, owner of Chicago Vintage Weddings, urges couples to consider the overall value, not simply the final tally. A venue with tables and chairs, a stage and a quality sound system on hand might cost more than raw space, but ultimately prove more cost effective since those items won’t need to be rented. Still, Lerman encourages budgetary vigilance. Some venues, she says, have “hidden costs” like strict vendor lists or in-house services that might not be “as flexible or affordable as couples would like.” FOOD AND BEVERAGE: 50% With food and beverage service greatly impacting the overall guest experience, couples are right to invest in it. Still, Lerman suggests couples ask caterers about their most affordable meal format. In some cases, plated meals might be more economical because fewer rentals

are needed compared to a buffet or family-style meal. PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO: 14% If couples love an established professional whose fee is simply too high, Lerman suggests asking that pro about more economical associates, perhaps someone the pro trained. Also, review the contract regarding digital rights. “This will allow you to make your own prints and albums instead of having to order them through your photographer,” Lerman says. ENTERTAINMENT: 8% Whether a couple chooses a DJ or a band, Lerman recommends asking the music pros if they will work with the venue’s sound system. “Just because it’s available doesn’t mean they’ll want to use it, and that will drive up costs,” she says, noting that many music pros prefer the reliability of their own equipment.

RENTALS: 8% Though optional, Lerman says fun extras like vintage lounge furniture and photo booths add to a reception’s vibe without breaking the budget. In some cases, these goodies can be available from existing vendors. “So, ask,” Lerman says. FLOWERS: 8% Lerman advises selective extravagance. “You don’t need giant centerpieces on every table,” she says. “Instead, have some showpieces and keep the rest more modest. This will save a lot of money and provide a pleasing texture and variety to your wedding style.”

SOUTHWEST

VENUE: 15% Houston-based wedding planner Skylar Caitlin of Chancey Charm Weddings says many notable venues in the Southwest offer more than raw space. That’s a plus, as it means many items are conveniently and affordably factored into the venue costs. FOOD AND BEVERAGE: 50% Given catering’s hefty costs, Caitlin urges couples to prioritize. If premium liquor is paramount, then consider a buffet dinner to offset costs. If a grandiose display cake

Average wedding cost Houston metro • $28,988*

isn’t important, then consider a dessert table or a cost-effective sheet cake paired with a more modest three-tier display cake. And rather than trying to slash catering costs to the bones, investigate trades such as swapping the salad course with additional cocktail-hour hors d’oeuvres. PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO: 10% Avoid selecting the photographer’s lowest option package, which often fails to provide enough hours of coverage and excludes extras you may end up wanting. “You can chat with them about removing items like prints or albums, but remember that adding these on later will typically cost more when they are not a part of the package,” Caitlin says. ENTERTAINMENT: 9% DJ’s, Caitlin reminds couples, will almost always be more cost-effective than bands, where costs can escalate if lighting or a stage is needed. For those dreaming of live

music, however, Caitlin proposes bypassing full-fledged bands in favor of string quartets or small acoustic groups who can play during the ceremony or cocktail hour. RENTALS: 6% According to Caitlin, minimizing the rental budget starts with selecting a venue that doesn’t need a lot of “dressing up.” “Draping, false walls and replacing unsightly banquet chairs can add up fast,” she says. She suggests pushing the rental budget toward high-impact places, such as a backdrop for the band or higherquality linens. FLOWERS: 10% Provide a color palette, your likes and dislikes and then give way to the professionals, Caitlin says. But do tell the florist you want to reduce and recycle. Bridesmaids’ bouquets can double as flowers at the reception bar while the ceremony’s floral wall can later serve as a photo backdrop.

BUDGET BREAKDOWN

WEST

PHOTOGRAPHY: KATY GRAY PHOTOGRAPHY

BUDGET BREAKDOWN

Average wedding cost LA metro • $34,698*

VENUE: 20% The Western U.S. offers an array of desirable, picturesque venues, though those with ocean views carry a premium price, reports Jen Bergmark, owner of First Pick Planning in Manhattan Beach, CA. Yet many venues do not include rentals, which means every element of the wedding needs to be brought in—which can add up. While a full-service venue can lower costs, so, too, can a weekday wedding. For those less traditional couples, a non-weekend wedding can provide substantial cost savings, even at some of the most sought-after venues, Bergmark says. FOOD AND BEVERAGE: 30% Bergmark isn’t one to support food and beverage service as a money-saving area. After all, cutting corners and veering away from a professional caterer with reliable, qualified staff can affect a wedding’s vibe

and hamper the guest experience. Still, Bergmark says, “Your caterer can suggest cost-cutting suggestions without compromising quality of service or food.” PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO: 12% Reminding that pictures and videos are long-term testaments to the wedding day, Bergmark cautions couples against choosing inexperienced, inexpensive photographers. “While a lower rate might look appealing at first, in the end you’ll want your wedding photos to reflect the technical skills only an experienced photographer has to capture those special moments accurately and beautifully,” she says. ENTERTAINMENT: 6% Though a live band will almost always cost more than a DJ, Bergmark doesn’t think that should preclude live musicloving couples from booking musicians. “It doesn’t have to be all or nothing,” she

says. Couples can mix and match. Perhaps a live band kicks off the night with one set before giving way to a DJ to close the evening. RENTALS: 20% When it comes to rentals, particularly at a venue that requires various extras, Bergmark suggests creating a priority list. “Know your deal-breaker items, but also have realistic expectations of items you would be okay not having in order to adhere to the budget,” she says. FLOWERS: 12% Given the prevalence of outdoor weddings on the West Coast, Bergmark says couples can utilize their surroundings to stretch the budget. “Less is sometimes more,” she says. To save, Bergmark recommends providing the florist creative freedom to make alternative suggestions, as many pros can share thoughts on cost-effective alternatives or ways to repurpose flowers throughout the wedding day. Garlands, for example, can easily transition from the ceremony to reception decor. 

YOUR MONEY

MONEY

TALKS

Get the two of you on firm financial footing with tips from finance expert Holly Kylen.

• TAKE FINANCIAL INVENTORY Now is the time to have a heart-to-heart with your future spouse about his financial past, present and future. Talk about retirement and other savings, whether you have wills that need to be updated and work benefits such as retirement accounts, health and life insurance and disability benefits. Explore whether you can save money by going on each other’s health insurance after marriage and consider whether you may need disability insurance to protect your paycheck if one of you becomes disabled and can’t work. Also ensure you are both contributing enough to your workplace retirement plans to take advantage of the employer match. • PLAY DETECTIVE Take notice of whether your future spouse spends money frivolously, frugally or somewhere in between. Dinners out, expensive vacations and buying the latest “it” item can reveal a careless approach to money. On the other hand, your partner might be frugal, ordering the cheapest item on the menu or splitting the bills down to the penny. Turn the microscope on yourself as well to identify your money personality. Tuning into these

TIP: If neither one of

clues can help you set realistic expectations for both yourself and your partner. • CREATE A SUPPORT NETWORK Your financial inventory should also include financial professionals who can support you as a couple in working toward achieving your financial and retirement goals. If you already work with an accountant, attorney and/or financial advisor, make sure your partner also establishes a relationship with them—and vice versa. If neither you nor your spouse has ever consulted with a financial advisor, now is the perfect time to find one together. • LOOK AHEAD TO THE RETIREMENT HORIZON Growing old might seem like it is light years away, but planning for retirement doesn’t happen overnight. If you and your fiancé are already saving for retirement through an employersponsored retirement plan or individual retirement account (IRA), you are off to a great start. If not, you may want to consider getting started saving for retirement and set up automatic deductions from your checking account or paycheck directly into a retirement account. This is also an opportunity to talk about your collective budget and make sure retirement savings is a shared priority. • THINK ABOUT ’TIL DEATH DO US PART It may be in the marriage vows, but “death” is not something any bride wants to consider before marriage. That said, marriage is a major event that entails join-

you has ever consulted with an accountant, attorney or financial advisor, now is the time to find one together. ing you for life with someone else. Protect each other through life insurance and update your beneficiary information on financial and retirement accounts. • ESTABLISH YOUR ROLES You don’t have to figure this out right away, but start to talk about how the two of you are going to divide household finances. Perhaps you pay the monthly bills and day-to-day expenses, while your spouse handles the insurance and retirement savings, or vice versa. Figure out each other’s strengths and natural abilities and play to those in how you divide up the financial responsibilities. • BE EACH OTHER’S BIGGEST CHEERLEADER Make sure you are each other’s biggest support when it comes to making financial decisions. Confide in each other and offer constructive advice. If the financial inventory uncovers debts or other financial challenges, figure out how to tackle the issues together as a team. Don’t forget to celebrate your successes, too. Promotions, raises and reaching financial and retirement goals are milestones that deserve recognition.

• DON’T DODGE THE DEBT TALK Make sure all the financial skeletons come out of the closet before the big day—discuss school loans, credit card debts and other prior obligations (child support or private loans). As uncomfortable as this topic might seem, you don’t want any unexpected surprises when it comes to debt obligations. Your debt— and your partner’s—impacts not just your collective bottom line, but also your ability to jointly make financial commitments, like buying a first home.

Robin and Cole said “I do” with a nature-themed fete in the peaceful Alaskan mountains. PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHIANA JOY PHOTOGRAPHY AND MARY WEBB PHOTOGRAPHY

Wishing to emphasize the beauty of the surrounding Alaskan forest, the couple looked to decor featuring natural elements like wood and florals. 3. The ceremony took place in the backyard of Mike and Kathleen Kondus, close friends of Robin and Cole. 4. The wedding was officiated with a backdrop of towering pine trees by family friend Father John Worthley.

fter a forested hike that ended at the shores of New York’s Long Island Sound, Cole turned to Robin and asked her to be his wife, to which she gave a resounding “Yes!” Having met during their orientation training for the Peace Corps in Peru, the couple became fast friends who bonded over discussions of life and work. Following a twoyear engagement, a year of which was spent backpacking through Southeast Asia, the couple knew that they wanted nature to play a big part in their wedding day and selected a friend’s backyard in Fairbanks, Alaska for their nuptials. “We wanted nature to tell its own story and show off its own beauty that day—it felt more pure and more natural, more our style,” said the bride. The awe-inspiring forest backdrop offered the perfect inspiration for the celebration’s decor. To that end, the ceremony and reception sites were covered in earthy elements: floral arrangements bursting with color, an arch constructed from pine trunks with a macramé drape and bamboo and ivy table decor. Dinner further mirrored the relaxed, celebratory vibe the couple was aiming for, with family-style seating and a menu featuring charcuterie loaded with meats and cheeses and a buffet barbecue, followed by s’mores made around a campfire. The 60 guests came from nearly every continent in the world to celebrate Robin and Cole’s love. Looking back at the big day the bride said, “It was the best party of the year!” —Anna Smutny

1. The couple had a two-tiered cake topped with florals, and also served cupcakes in a variety of flavors. 2. A “Mr.” and “Mrs.” sign marked the seating for the happy couple. 3. Following their vows, the newlyweds strolled hand-in-hand through a nearby meadow for photos. 4. The bridesmaids made hundreds of colorful paper origami swans and strung them up inside the dance tent. 5. To thank her bridesmaids for being a part of the special day, Robin created custom hangers. 6. The floral arrangements scattered throughout the ceremony location were bursting with color: peonies, sunflowers, roses, eucalyptus and lush greenery.

Personal Touches • Wanting the day to have a personal vibe, the couple focused on incorporating numerous DIY touches: custom bouquets and flower crowns, handmade centerpieces and handcrafted ceiling decorations. • The couple’s wedding bands are very sentimental; having both previously belonged to the bride’s parents, Shirley and Bob. Both bands were a perfect fit without needing to be resized. • The guest’s goodie bags were loaded with a homemade chocolate spread, jerky, Peru keychains and mini bottles of champagne with commemorative labels.

Love Island Noran and Jay headed to the tropical paradise of Bora Bora for beachside celebrations with stunning ocean views. PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARC GERARD

The dining tables were covered in greenery and tropical florals.

The newlyweds stroll hand-in-hand alongside the shore beneath a stunning Bora Bora sunset.

uring a surprise birthday party surrounded by family and friends, Jay popped the question and asked Noran to be his bride. With a delighted “Yes!” Noran solidified their future together as husband and wife. During their yearlong engagement, the couple hunted for the perfect venue to celebrate their love story. Knowing they wanted an intimate wedding, the pair selected the Four Seasons Resort in Bora Bora, aiming for a tropical oasis-themed fete. “We chose a destination wedding so we could have something special,” says the bride. “We wanted to make sure that our wedding was memorable for us and our guests.” The 30 guests were treated to a private beach reception with food, drinks and music that mirrored the paradise around them. With a theme of the surrounding island oasis in mind, giant palm leaves, lush floral arrangements, hand-selected sea shells, Polynesian detailing such as leis and flower crowns, and table settings bursting with greenery, the couple strived for decor that truly encompassed the beauty of the island. Amidst all of the celebrations, however, the couple’s favorite memory was watching the romantic sunset as newlyweds. “We loved so many parts of our wedding,” says the bride. “But viewing the sunset over Mount Otemanu and Pahia was just magical; it was a memory we never could have purchased.” —Anna Smutny

Personal Touches • The couple wanted a Western ceremony with details related to their Polynesian ancestry: floral crowns and leis, receiving a Polynesian wedding name, a blanket wrap and hand washing. • The couple gifted their guests with snorkeling and a private beach party filled with food, drinks, music and other experiences unique to Bora Bora.

1. The intimate beachside ceremony featured a panoramic ocean backdrop, palm leaves and flowers. 2. The two-tiered cake was embellished with yellow flowers, symbolic of the bride’s name, which translates to “yellow” in her ancestral language. 3. The bride’s bouquet reflected her chosen color palette of green, white and yellow that enhanced the beauty of the surroundings. 4. Following the ceremony, the couple posed for their wedding photos against an ocean sunset backdrop. 5. Bunches of flowers and a palm leaf adorned the ceremony seating. 6. The guests were able to refresh themselves by sipping from giant coconuts. 7. The table settings maintained the tropical theme with the menu design and greenery serving as nametags. ARENAS DEL MAR BEACHFRONT & RAINFOREST RESORT In Costa Rica, where sustainable travel is a national tenet, this posh resort—a collection of just 38 suites positioned between the rainforest and the Pacific Ocean— is a green standout. Not only are the accommodations crafted from local materials, water is heated The pool at Arenas del Mar. by solar, all cleaning products are organic and water is recycled for the gardens. The resort’s food program showcases hyper-local ingredients and property-grown produce. But the hotel’s commitment to sustainable seafood sourcing is especially notable. The property partners with smallscale fisheries and seafood co-ops to provide guests with the freshest seasonal offerings (room rates start at $550 a night; arenasdelmar.com).

Andaz London Liverpool Street

Inside the exclusive suite.

Hip and haute are synonymous with the boutique Andaz brand, and this outpost in London with its poppy design complemented by street art decor touches is the embodiment of the hotel chain’s ethos. A partnership with (RED), the international powerhouse AIDS-prevention and education foundation founded by Bono and Bobby Shriver, further highlights the hotel’s street cred and community-minded outreach. Stays in the Andaz Red suite, a cool apartment-like space with a vibrant living room, oversize bedroom and pampering bath, directly benefit the organization (room rates start at $733 a night; andaz.hyatt.com).

Farm Sanctuary’s tiny houses.

FARM SANCTUARY This assortment of tiny houses set on 275 acres of farmland in New York’s bucolic Finger Lakes region is exactly what its name indicates—a rescue shelter for farmed animals. More than 800 cows, pigs, turkeys and chickens that have been rescued from factory or other unsafe farms inhabit the land. They are nursed to health and then sometimes adopted by smaller, more humane ranches or estates. Programming includes school and sponsorship initiatives. Book into one of the tiny houses and you’ll play farmer and animal healer for your stay (room rates start at $275 a night; farmsanctuary.org).

Feel-Good Stays

In the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean on Mexico’s Costa Alegre sits this chic enclave of private villas, stylish apartments and eateries, endless pools and an equal amount of coastline. While the amenities are uber luxe—polo, anyone?—and attract tastemakers, the beach resort is decidedly focused on giving back via its multipronged eponymous foundation. The conservation program highlights turtle preservation. Another designation sends educators to local schools. Similarly, the sports workshops involve community outreach, as does the artist resident program. International artists spend time working on their own projects and meet with locals to teach and guide their process (room rates start at $350 a night; careyes.com).

EDITOR’S TIPS

CARRY ON Simple steps to making the most out of your vacation wardrobe.

T

by Jenna Mahoney

raveling. You lug around overstuffed bags filled with too many Insta-ready looks, shoes you won’t wear, a pile of beauty products you’ll never use and endless “just-in-case” items. With baggage loss at an all-time high and fees for checked luggage a permanent extra cost, it pays to pack light.

THE BAGS

THE BASICS Organization experts suggest laying out your clothing options a few weeks before your trip, adding and subtracting as needed. But I’m usually so overscheduled before departure that I’m lucky I make it to the gate on time. Instead, I keep an arsenal of comfy travel clothes that look good on the go and manage to be appropriate for nearly any venue. Most are mid-weight dresses in lengths just-above-to-just-below the knee. I also have some cardigans, a pair of dark rinse jeans and a bunch of tanks, which work for layering, exercising and sleeping. On the plane, I always wear leggings and a blazer—an instant outfit amp-up move. I tend to pack more shoes than necessary, but a single pair of heels, flip-flops and a sneaker-like shoe are really all you need. I love Toms shoes; the rubber-soled slip-ons are easy to get off and on for security, have enough support for trekking—I climbed Machu Picchu and Table Mountain in mine—and look cool for city touring.

ACCESSORIES “The only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize.” Olympia Dukakis said that in Steel Magnolias, and I agree. Scarves add interest to an outfit. Belts cinched at the waist transform day dresses into night, while a wrap looks chic no matter the setting. And don’t forget your favorite pair of sunglasses! Not only do you need them during the day, they’re an ace way to hold your hair back in a pinch.

BEAUTY PRODUCTS You want to look your best on your honeymoon, but take into consideration the extra security hassle your favorite products can cause. I keep a tin of lip-hydrating Rosebud Salve (it also works as an eyebrow tamer) and a solid perfume in my bag, along with a bunch of hairsheets and pony-tail bands to tame my messy head. Sunscreen is a must for beach destinations or places where I’ll do some city strolling and sightseeing. I keep a shimmer stick for legs, arms and décolletage, sometimes for face highlighting as well. For makeup, I limit myself to three items: a mascara, a two-in-one lip-and-cheek stain and a tinted moisturizer with SPF.

EXTRAS Don’t forget to carry on your medications, as well as little helpers like aspirin, Pepto-Bismol, anti-itch cream for those darn mosquito bites and friction-balm to combat blisters from your new vacation sandals. I also stash alchohol or antibacterial wipes for wiping away ick-factors and packs of tissues. Remember to carry about $50 in singles for tipping and small purchases like iced coffees and water on the go. 

PHOTOGRAPHY: SHUTTERSTOCK

Most seasoned travelers refuse to check their luggage—but you need the right stuff: A compact rolling bag with enough depth to ensure no wrinkles and an oversized tote are your best HINT: bets. I use a soft-sided bag by Swiss If you’ve flown Army, which is roomy enough for a ton internationally within of clothing options (I got in two weeks’ the last 24 hours, domestic baggage worth of outfits for my honeymoon in fees are waived Africa). The suitcase has lots of interior by most major and exterior pockets for a laptop, flipairlines. flops and crushable hats. Lately, it seems that the size allocation for rolling bags varies on different carriers, so I keep a bag lock in my documents pouch in case I need to gate check my bag. For carrying books, magazines and toiletries, I like the nylon totes by Longchamp and L.L. Bean. I also put in extra undies, a tank top, a scarf, pumps, a black dress and some yoga pants. So if I’m forced to check and my bag gets lost, I’ve got enough to get me through a day and a night.

In every issue, we scout a spot that’s perfect for tying the knot away from home. by Carrie Bell

M

eghan Markle, Ciara, Kim Kardashian and Chrissy Teigen all headed across the pond to say “I do” in venues fit for a queen—sometimes literally! But these epic locations don’t need to be limited to the rich and famous, storming the castles of Europe with their nearest and dearest in tow. These historic homes with their stately tree-lined drives, manicured grounds, grand ballrooms and plush suites will help you feel like royalty for a—big—day.

Ireland’s Kilkea Castle. Kokkedal Slot in Denmark.

KILKEA CASTLE, IRELAND Built in 1180 by the Earl of Ulster for a Norman knight/baron named Walter de Riddlesford, the 180-acre park-like property in County Kildare, an hour from Dublin, has most of the trappings of a traditional castle down to the toothy battlement ornamentation, imposing turrets and the last vestiges of a moat. Activities on offer—archery, falconry, clay shooting, horseback riding—add an aristocratic touch to wedding weekends. Kilkea Hotel Chateau also has tennis, fishing, river tubing, boat tours and in France. an 18-hole golf course. A recent $30 million renovation gussied up 11 bedrooms inside the castle with modern conveniences, marble bathrooms and bold wallpaper. Host a welcome tea in the drawing room, your ceremony in the rose garden or alongside the river, and a reception with a live band and a menu featuring pesto-infused lamb in the shiny new Baronial Hall. Set on the scenic coast 30 minutes north of Copenhagen and across the sound from Sweden, Kokkedal Slot, a 62-room resort and golf course since 2014, seamlessly blends the high end (luminous crystal chandeliers, champagne toasts, beef tartare and free-standing tubs) and comfort (calming breezes, trees-to-seas views, spa treatments and a refined but cozy banquet hall featuring an abundance of natural light and a wide terrace). Continue the regal theme with polo lessons and outings to nearby palaces including Frederiksborg, Fredensborg (the monarch’s still-functioning country seat) or Kronborg, the fictional Elsinore home of Hamlet (wedding packages start at $125 per person; kokkedalslotcopenhagen.dk).

HOTEL CHATEAU DU GRAND-LUCE, FRANCE Celebrate your love in the Loire Valley at the palatial pied-à-terre where original owner Baron Jacques Pineau de Viennay played host to nobility and Age of Enlightenment heavy hitters like Voltaire, Mozart and Rousseau. Think canopied beds, oak floors, personal valet service à la Downton Abbey’s Carson, stables reimagined as a resplendent ballroom with velvet curtains and crystal sconces, sumptuous damasks, wainscoting and gilded antiques. Bridal Guide: San Miguel de Allende, positioned in Mexico’s central highlands, is known for its artsy vibe and baroque architecture. What do you think makes it such a romantic and evocative destination? Bruce James: The unique combination of colonial charm and contemporary flair makes the city remarkable. There is no other destination in Mexico that so completely captures the allure of the past and combines it with the essential lifestyle elements of today—from sophisticated dining to fashionable boutique shopping. Here, you can enjoy strolling the cobblestone streets of a picturesque colonial city lined with colorful homes and intriguing doors. There’s a surprise waiting behind every one of them. Dream a Little Dream

Kudadoo Maldives Private Island, a luxury boutique resort of only overwater villas, brims with special experiences. Two standouts are the Himalayan salt chamber, known for healing properties, and an in-house marine biologist who leads guests on swimming adventures with local manta rays. The resort is also home to Dream Island, an unspoiled, deserted sandbank that’s a sliver of white surrounded by crystal-clear water. It can be booked for special moments, like a romantic dinner or an entire castaway day (room rates start at $3,140 a night; kudadoo.com).

An excursion with One & Only Reethi Rah.

GLOWING REVIEWS One & Only Reethi Rah is a sexy resort with a roster of celebrity guests that’s a haven for wellness enthusiasts. There’s a rock-climbing wall, tennis courts, endless watersports, a massive indoor/outdoor gym and free bikes to tour the island. Don’t miss the resort’s spa, a lush sanctuary complete with private treatment villas, a reflection pond and charming pavilions. There are also saunas, crystal steam rooms and therapy pools with waterfalls. Expect a property-exclusive treatment menu that includes a coconut exfoliation and cleansing foot rituals (room rates start at about $2,000 a night; oneandonlyresorts.com).

Evening on a personal deck.

The only Maldivian-owned luxury resort in the archipelago, Milaidhoo Island Maldives has four dining venues, including Ba’theli Lounge & Restaurant, an overwater eatery shaped like a boat. The chef elevates local cuisine with a journey showcasing island ingredients (fish and coconuts) flavored with traditional spices—cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric and ginger. The fine-dining restaurant has glam interiors; al fresco dining is available under a starlit sky. Milaidhoo is located within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, so you’re likely to see plenty of marine life, including friendly nurse sharks.

Fewer than one million people travel to the Maldives every year; of that just 10 percent are Americans. Translation: A visit here is a blissfully exclusive trip of a lifetime with endless bragging rights.

Home Away Every luxury resort in the Maldives is utterly unique and located on its own island. Visitors tend to divide their honeymoon booking into various properties (two to three different resorts is common) for the ultimate experience. Soneva Jani is a favorite thanks to the Swinging at Soneva. fact all rooms are overwater, bi-level villas starting at a staggering 4,400 square feet. HAWAII

ALOHA, ART EXPLORE THE RAINBOW STATE IN ITS MANY COLORS AND ART FORMS WITH THESE AMAZING ONLY-IN-HAWAII CULTURAL EXPERIENCES. BY DONNA HEIDERSTADT

T

here are some very obvious reasons to honeymoon in Hawaii: It’s super romantic, undeniably gorgeous and has a mellow aloha vibe. The archipelago also boasts incredible beaches, superb watersports, indulgent spas designed for couples and some pretty amazing adventure activities. The fact that you don’t need a passport and everything is priced in U.S.

dollars earns bonus points, too. And if your honeymoon plans include art tours and cultural excursions, the Hawaiian islands also offer multitudes in that department. While you may not find the beachfront equivalent of the Louvre or the Uffizi, Hawaii’s got culture-lovers covered with local artisans, music and even tattooing traditions. Here are

10 experiences on the four major islands—Maui, Oahu, the Big Island and Kauai— that artistic-minded newlyweds will appreciate. ➺

HAWAII

Take a look at Oahu’s Bishop Museum.

• MAUI ARTS & CULTURAL CENTER Known as MACC, this visual and performing arts venue located on the waterfront in Kahului—Maui’s transportation and commercial center—has been presenting cultural programming since 1994. Here, you can enjoy concerts by local Hawaiian musicians and stateside artists such as country group Old Dominion, music festivals showcasing masters in guitar and ukulele, free art exhibitions and movie screenings (exhibitions are free. Concert and festival prices vary; mauiarts.org). • SLACK KEY SHOW: MASTERS OF HAWAIIAN MUSIC If you’re not from the islands of Hawaii you may not have heard of the slack key guitar, but you’ve probably heard the unforgettable sound it makes—a vibrating yet soothing wave of melodic chords that tells you instantly you’re in the Hawaiian islands. Traditional and contemporary masters of slack-key and ukulele music, including George Kahumoku, Jr. and Led Kaapana, perform on Wednesday nights at the Aloha Pavilion of the Napili Kai Beach Resort in Kapalua (room rates start at $335 a night. Tickets start at $37.99 per person; slackkeyshow.com). • FOUR SEASONS RESORT MAUI ART COLLECTION Not only is the luxurious Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea one of the island’s top places to stay, it also has its own contemporary Hawaiian art museum with a collection of 2,300 pieces. Not all are on public display, but there are plenty of visual delights to appreciate from 1959 (when Hawaii became the 50th State) to the present, including more than 280 pieces of fine art used as decor throughout its public spaces and guest rooms. Even if you choose to stay elsewhere, stop here to take a complimentary podcast tour (room rates start at $599 a night; fourseasons.com).

OAHU

• THE BISHOP MUSEUM There’s no better spot to admire Hawaii’s history, arts and culture than in the signature galleries of this stunning Honolulu museum. The architecture alone is worth a visit—the building was constructed in 1889 to house the collection of royal heirlooms of the late Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last descendent of the ruling Kamehameha family. Equally captivating is contemplating the insane amount of work required to make the ‘ahu ‘ula, a red, yellow and black royal cape worn by King Kalanio’pu’u in the 18th century, that’s constructed from more than a million feathers from 20,000 birds which were then set free (admission is $24.95 or combine it with a tour of Iolani Palace, the royal residence, for $99, including transportation and lunch; bishopmuseum.org). • TRADITIONAL & CONTEMPORARY TATTOOS If you love ink and want a memento of your Hawaiian honeymoon that has deep cultural significance, schedule a session with tattoo practitioner Keone Nunes, who works in the tradi-

In fact, it houses more than 50,000 works spanning 5,000 years—and is a convenient shuttle ride from the hotels in sparkling Waikiki. BIG ISLAND

• ART COLLECTION AT THE MAUNA KEA BEACH HOTEL The arts of Hawaii, Oceania and Asia are part of the DNA of this hotel developed by philanthropist Laurance S. Rockefeller in 1965 and recently refreshed with contemporary Hawaiian decor. Most hallways and public spaces are decorated with museum-quality sculptures, paintings and traditional handicrafts—from a 12th-century pink granite Buddha from India to Maori canoe prows from New Zealand. As a guest of the resort, located on a crescent beach on the Kohala Coast, you’ll be able to wander and admire the works, and there’s a free weekly art tour every Saturday at 10:00 a.m. that’s open to anyone. Greeting the day at Mauna Kea.

There’s also an art podcast (room rates start at $500 a night; maunakeabeachhotel.com). • VOLCANO ARTS CENTER If you love to browse work by local artists, stop by this nonprofit gallery/workshop space that’s been sharing Hawaiian creativity since 1974. Located in the circa-1877 Volcano House Hotel in Kilauea—which is positioned inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park so you can get a look at the Big Island’s artistically swirled lava flows as well—this center is internationally known for promoting local art and cultural programs in conjunction with nature via galleries, performances and workshops (admission is free; volcanoartcenter.org).

KAUAI

• KAUAI MUSEUM Dedicated to preserving Kauai history and culture—with some stunning artifacts and colorful royal portraits on view—this small museum located in an historic lava stone building in Lihue is a spot to visit during the heat of midday to enjoy a docent-led tour focusing on ancient Hawaiian culture (admission is $15, closed Sunday; kauaimuseum.org). • HANAPEPE ART NIGHT Every Friday night since 1997, “Kauai's biggest little town” has held a festive art fair with galleries open late (until 9:00 p.m.) and independent artists, crafters and vendors selling merchandise along its historic Main Street. There’s music and food too. Hanapepe, which is located halfway between Poipu and Waimea on Kauai’s south shore, features plantation-style buildings and the famous Hanapepe Swinging Bridge (admission is free; hanapepe.org). ¢ Posing at the Honolulu Museum of Art.

LOS ANGELES CITY: Though the City of Angels has been gaining recognition for its vibrant food and art scenes of late, it remains timelessly synonymous with its most famous export: the movies. And there are few places to get a better sense of Tinseltown history than The Hollywood Roosevelt—this was the setting for the first-ever Academy Awards, after all. The hotel sits alongside the Hollywood Walk of Fame and rooms in the main tower and retro poolside cabanas have hosted the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin and Clark Gable. NEW YORK CITY CITY: Not just for Wall Street traders anymore, lower Manhattan has found its groove in recent years, with a flurry of new bars and restaurants convincing people to stick around long after the market’s closing bell chimes. The showstopper attraction here is One World Observatory, spanning levels 100 to 102 of the western hemisphere’s tallest building. You should also make time for shopping at Brookfield Place and cocktails at neighboring Dead Rabbit, an old-school spot popular with creative types. Occupying a landmark building dating from the 1880s, The Beekman, A Thompson Hotel boasts some of the area’s most spectacular interiors, with a nine-story, glass-ceiling atrium framed by Victorian wrought-iron railings. MINNEAPOLIS CITY: Often-overlooked Minneapolis is the Midwest’s culture capital, home to a particularly exciting art scene that blends first-rate museums with edgy galleries and eye-catching public art. There’s a top-notch food scene here too; one that equally embraces the area’s Nordic heritage and multi-cultural present. STAR RESORT

Want to honeymoon where the celebs do? In each issue, we take a peek at a star-studded hideaway.

ot one to shy from the spotlight, triple threat and musical theater geek in both real life and on TV, Scream Queens star Lea Michele glowed with glee while 200-plus guests looked on as she swapped vows with fashion exec Zandy Reich. Officiated by director Ryan Murphy under a photogenic chuppah of white flowers and greenery at the bucolic Carneros Resort and Spa, a Preferred Hotel Member, the ceremony was filled with laughter and smiles. After they were pronounced husband and wife, the couple led the way to an Italianinspired, family-style dinner and loads of dancing, surely accompanied by more happy laughter, on the grounds of the picturesque property. With its sweeping vistas and innate charm, a stay at this resort in California’s Napa Valley feels like a cinematic visit to a wine country hideaway. Here, 100 enchanting cottages, suites and ultra-luxe private homes are scattered over 28 pastoral acres. Accommodations, which are grouped in “neighborhoods” denoted by local flora, celebrate the surroundings with rustic-chic interiors, botanical-inspired fabrics and expansive outdoor Inside the spa. spaces. The spa furthers the homage to local agricultural and winemaking traditions. Treatments incorporate the bounty of the property’s gardens—they’re situated on an impressive half-acre expanse. And this being Napa, the birthplace of the farm-to-table food movement, all cuisine is hyper local. Other notable amenities include a hilltop pool with awesome views of the surrounding scenery (room rates start at $550 a night; carnerosresort.com). —Jenna Mahoney
