ADVICE

etiquette

wedding Straight talk, smart solutions by Mary Clarke, Editor in Chief

VENDOR SEARCH

Q

I’m about to start planning my wedding. Any tips on how to nail down the best wedding pros?

PHOTOGRAPHY: RACHEL HAVEL PHTOGRAPHY

A

Finding the right pros does take some digging, but the effort will be well worth it in the long run. Start by doing online research and make sure you check out a vendor’s website and Instagram. Both should be up-to-date and feature their most recent work. We like to see galleries on vendor sites that effectively showcase their diverse talents. Look for positive online reviews as well. Word of mouth is always a plus, and if you liked a vendor’s work from a friend’s or relative’s wedding you attended, by all means seek them out. When you meet with vendors, ask to see complete portfolios of the weddings they planned, decorated or photographed. Keep in mind that good communication is key, and if your emails or phone calls are not answered promptly, consider it a warning that this unresponsiveness could be a potential problem down the road. When you meet with vendors, have a list of questions ready, and make sure you feel comfortable speaking with them. Are you hitting it off? Are they friendly and willing to take the time to answer your questions and address your concerns? Can they work within your budget? Do they make you and your partner feel special? If there is any hesitation or second-guessing, then it’s best to keep looking.

JUNIOR MISS

Q

Is my niece, who is 10, too old to be a flower girl, or should she be

considered a junior bridesmaid? If so, what is her role and should she be paired with a groomsman for the processional and recessional?

A

Your niece is just the right age to be a junior bridesmaid— flower girls are generally between the ages of 4 and 8, and junior bridesmaids are 10 to 14 years old. Your niece won’t have any specific responsibilities other than to participate in your rehearsal and ceremony. And although she can attend the bridal shower she’s not expected to contribute financially. As far as her position in the processional and recessional, she can either walk down the aisle before the other bridesmaids (a partner from the groom’s side is not needed), or after the bridesmaids and just before the maid of honor. The same procedure follows for the recessional. TAKE A SEAT

Q

Guests will be standing at our outdoor ceremony. However, we will have some chairs for our older relatives. How can we make sure the other guests will not take their seats?

A

Your best bet is to place “Reserved” signs on the backs of the chairs so others won’t assume it’s a first-come, first-served arrangement. You should also make sure your ushers know which relatives are to be seated so they can escort them to their seats. And should any of the other guests take the seats by mistake your ushers should politely inform them that the chairs have been reserved.

DIVORCE DILEMMA

Q

My divorced parents are not on good terms, and I’m worried about how they might interact with each other at my wedding. Have you any advice?

A

We assume you have a good relationship with both your mom and dad, so let each one know how you are feeling. It will help a great deal if they realize just how anxious you are about their displaying any animosity or unpleasant behavior on your wedding day. Stress how this will affect not only your enjoyment of the day itself, but also the memories you’ll have of what should be one of the most joy-filled days of your life. Let your parents know that you hope they will not let their emotions rule the day and will be able to let go of any anger or ill will. You want this to be a happy occasion for everyone. They may not realize how concerned you are, so addressing this issue now—openly and honestly—should persuade them to make every effort to be on their best behavior. ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. cover style

Speaking of glowing, we added these gleaming green amethyst drop earrings for an unexpected, and yes, very glamorous pairing. Since (style) rules are meant to be broken, brides are taking advantage of the hottest jewelry trend for weddings - color! Jewelry designer Anne Sisteron shares her thoughts, “Wearing colored gemstones on your wedding day is a fun way to add a pop of color and show your personality. It allows for wearability beyond the big day! These Green Amethyst Luxe Olympia earrings are the perfect earrings for your wedding day, as they have a classic cut with a modern twist of color. They pay homage to the tradition of wearing something blue in a unique way.”

Glamour is as much a state of physical being as it is a state of mind. The word itself conjures up an ideal of sophisticated beauty, polished style, and a heightened sense of awareness with an inherent ability to captivate. Our cover girl for this issue, Mieke Visser is naturally glamorous and dare we say that everything she wears shines brightly in her pretty patina of effortless glam. Wearing a gorgeous Eve of Milady Boutique gown with a stunning beaded bodice and very dramatic sleeves (more of that please!), Visser glows from head to toe.

In Dreams Natalie Good conjures up a California celebration with a French countyside feel for a couple living in Hong Kong. Photography by Garrett Richardson

“It doesn’t even feel like California,” says Natalie Good, owner & creative director of A Good Affair, of Beaulieu Garden. “The bride has a very European aesthetic, and I thought the venue would be perfect.” A good call on Natalie’s part. “The couple didn’t see the venue in person until two days before the wedding. They live in Hong Kong and couldn’t travel due to COVID restrictions.” 1 The invitation suite features an illustration of the venue’s fountain. 2 The cake design was informed by the bride’s dress. 3 Table numbers echo the stationery suite’s watercolor detail. 4 Natalie and her team placed flower petals just so in the garden pond “to make it feel like an intentional part of the design while still feeling organic.” 4

“The bride has a really discerning eye,” Natalie says. “And wanted everything to be impeccable. From the super-manicured garden to the shimmering pond where the ceremony took place, everything felt elegant and elevated while still keeping a slightly playful, whimsical touch. This was very much reflective of the bride’s personality.” 1 “I had the idea to do an open-ended ceremony arch to create a focal point and highlight the garden sculpture.” 2 A classic white bridal bouquet “lets the bride’s dress shine,” Natalie says. 3 “We did a classic escort display with a European touch.” Lush florals “give guests something to stop and admire.” 3

Planners We L ve Take inspiration from these creative forces as we continue our series spotlighting the best in the business. by Carol Straley NANCY PARK & PAEAN WANG,

Paean and Nancy.

So Happi Together, Event Design and Planning

PHOTOGRAPHY: (CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT) SALLY PINERA (2); CAROLINE TRAN (2); SALLY PINERA (2)

Back in 2008, together with her then fiancé (now husband) Nancy Park launched So Happi Together, a blog dedicated to their wedding planning journey. Between working on her PhD in Cultural Studies and lecturing at various universities, Nancy was also organizing events for various nonprofits. Informed by her own event planning experience, Nancy’s blog attracted a loyal readership whose members began clamoring for help in planning their own weddings. Within a year, two dozen weddings were booked! And with that, So Happi Together Event Design and Planning was born. Paean Wang joined the team as

an intern in 2017, becoming an official partner in 2021, having earned degrees in dance and economics along the way. To deliver the high-touch service they are known for, Nancy and Paean keep their calendar to 12-15 couples/weddings at a time. Whether couples want to tie the knot in a glittering ballroom or a rustic barnyard, with a celebration that can be intimate or extravagant, this dynamic duo will pull out all the stops to ensure they are So Happi Together!

A quiet moment.

A summer wedding with a winter wonderland theme.

Our Signature Wedding Style

• “A beautiful combination of classic elegance and contemporary charm.” • “Our couples are not concerned about trends, but rather appreciate the beauty of personalizing You’re invited! traditions and focusing on guest experience over doing something ‘for the gram.’ ” • “Caterers and hotel venues joke that we are the ‘pink-salt planners,’ because we obsess over the tiniest details, like the type of salt that gets set on our tables.”

What Inspires Us

• “Firstly, we are inspired by our couples, their story and the location and season of the wedding. We incorporate personal touches such as family heirlooms, meaningful music, and/or traditional or cultural foods.” • “We also play into the colors of the season and surroundings, which ultimately So Happi! 32 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Sept/Oct 2023

serve as a foundation for the overall design.” • “Our inspiration also comes from traveling to new cities and visiting our favorite high-end resorts.” A happy couple and their fur baby.

Favorite Moments

• “We recently produced a wedding for a bride who was 18 when her cousin (one of our previous brides), got married 10 years ago! A true highlight was seeing our previous bride and groom (and their parents!) with their three children, and helping those kids walk down the aisle as flower girl and ring bearers.”

Making Magic

• “We once built a winter wonderland in the middle of summer at our bride’s family cabin in the mountains of Big Bear. The bride grew up visiting the cabin built by her grandfather and always dreamed of a winter wedding in the backyard. Due to timing issues, she needed to host her wedding ceremony in the summer.” Dinner is served.

Bird’s-eye view.

Happy Endings

“A casual brunch or lounging and drinks by the pool is a perfect way to close out a wedding weekend. But keep it informal! Most guests are living their best lives at our receptions, so casual day-after events, with coffee and carbs, are the way to go.”

Favorite Wedding Tradition

• “Kicking off the reception with a traditional first dance. It’s the moment when couples go from being hosts to being able to enjoy the party like everyone else!”

Safe Celebrations

• “From live action savory stations to multiple sweets stations, something we’ve seen stay (post-pandemic) is having chef and service attendants present. This not only helps to keep stations clean and serviced throughout the evening, but also provides guests with a VIP experience.”

Words of Wisdom

• “Our motto is, whatever happens on the wedding day was meant to happen… Letting things go and letting yourself just be in the moment is when we see our couples at their truest, happiest selves.” ➺ 33

DARCI GREENWOOD & ARDEN GREENWOOD Greenwood Events

For Darci Greenwood and her stepdaughter Arden Greenwood, the wedding planning business is a family affair. Whether creating dream weddings in the majestic Rocky Mountains, at a ranch in the wilds of Montana or a private oceanside residence in California, one detail that always stands out is their exquisite in-house floral design. In fact, the Greenwood Events backstory begins with Darci’s recognition as a top-flight florist, starting with the opening of her own acclaimed boutique-style flower shop in 2003. Along with her love for florals and flair for event design, Darci’s expertise in hospitality and venue management for luxury hotels gave her the formidable skill set and experience needed to plan and design magical wedding weekends for her clients. By 2012 she was ready to launch Greenwood Events as a full-service wedding and event planning, production and design company. Growing up amidst the excitement of all things weddings, Arden had a front row seat to the intricacies that go into putting together sublime celebrations. Well Received PROBLEM: “Both my fiancé’s parents and my parents have divorced and remarried. Who should stand in the receiving line to meet and greet our guests?” SOLUTION: If everyone wants

A

s if wedding etiquette weren’t tricky enough. Bring divorced parents into the mix, and you’ve got sticky situations galore. Here, we discuss some typical problems, and offer a few solutions. Of course, every family is different, so feel free to improvise.

Take Your Seats PROBLEM: “My divorced parents don’t get along at all, and I have no intention of seating them anywhere near each other during the ceremony. What advice can you give me?” SOLUTION: At a typical wedding, the first few rows of seats

are reserved for close family members, with parents in the front row, grandparents and siblings in the second row, and so on. If the relationship between your parents is tense, traditional wedding etiquette states that the parent to whom you happen to feel closest—let’s say it’s your mom—would sit in the front row, while your dad would be seated in the third or fourth row (with your stepmother, if he has remarried).

Here Comes the Bride PROBLEM: “My stepfather feels more like a father to me than my real dad, and I’d like him to walk me down the aisle. Is there a way to do this without hurting my dad?” SOLUTION: This is a tough one. To avoid hurting your dad’s

feelings, consider these other possibilities: If your “fathers” get along well, perhaps they can both walk you down the aisle, one on each arm. If there’s friction between the two, your stepfather 36 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Sept/Oct 2023

Dancing Dos and Don’ts PROBLEM: “My fiancé wants to have a mother/son dance. Am I expected to only have a father/daughter dance? Can I also dance with my mom, who basically raised me?” SOLUTION: You’re under no obligation to have a traditional father/

daughter dance. Instead, you might include both your parents, with separate dances and songs for each of them. Or (our favorite option), choose one tune for a “parent dance.” Start out with Dad, then, halfway through the song, switch to your mom. 

PHOTO PHOBIA DON’T WORRY: You don’t have to round everyone up for that “one big, happy family” photograph if your parents don’t get along or if you’re not particularly fond of a stepparent. But you should meet with your photographer ahead of time to discuss the types of photos you want and which members of your family should be included. A professional photographer is sure to have dealt with divorced family situations and can probably offer some expert advice on how to handle potential problems. AS FOR THAT STICKY QUESTION—“Does my obnoxious stepparent have to be in the photos?”—the answer is yes. Leaving a stepmother you dislike out of your wedding photos, for example, is bound to hurt her—and your dad’s—feelings and affect your relationship with them. So, have some shots taken of you and your groom with your father and stepmother. Your dad will have a keepsake, and both of them will appreciate your generosity.

101BUDGET TIPS HERE’S HOW TO SAVE ON EVERYTHING FROM COCKTAIL HOUR TO CAKE-CUTTING, FLOWERS TO PHOTOS—PLUS LOTS MORE.

1

Create a comparison chart to track what is included in the price for each venue you’re considering. One company may not include linens and the cake, for example, while another company does. Many public spaces like parks or the local village green may be available to rent at a low fee. However, if the space is not equipped to handle events, you’ll have to rent everything from napkins to tables and chairs. Make sure you come out ahead. Choose an unusual venue, such as an aquarium, a zoo, a gallery or a historical site. Site fees are not high and you’ll save on decor because the venue already supplies ambience. But the same caveat

2

3

goes as for public spaces: Figure in what you'll have to spend on rentals. Hold your ceremony and your reception in the same place. You’ll save yourselves multiple site fees as well as transportation from one location to the other. If you belong to a community organization or to the military, you may have access, at low cost, to a venue belonging to them. Depending on your venue, you may not need to decorate extensively. If you marry outdoors at a winery, for example, there’s not much you'll need to add to the gorgeous vineyard backdrop. Rent a vacation home. Even if the owners charge you a week’s worth of rent for the day, it may still be equal to or less than renting a tradi-

tional reception venue. Don’t forget your alma mater—these usually rent for a few hundred dollars. If a family member has a scenic property, find out if you can hold your wedding there. One couple held their wedding on the Wyoming ranch where the groom had grown up. Unique and cost-conscious!

8 9

10

If you’re a city-dweller, leave town for your wedding. One Boston bride saved more than $50 per person by holding her wedding in Burlington, Vermont. For a garden wedding, look into renting a historic mansion; many of these have gardens that are included in the deal. You may find, as

did one couple, that the mansion they rented had no time limit, and the fee was less than half a hall rental. Look for reception packages. Holding your event at a venue that provides catering and food-service items will save on extra rentals. Save on your rehearsal dinner site by throwing a backyard barbecue or a picnic in a local park, both of which can cost considerably less than a dinner in a restaurant. Accept a post-wedding brunch at a relative’s home as a wedding gift. You may find that in lieu of a gift, a friend or relative will be thrilled to host this event in his or her home. Trim the length of your reception. Even doing a three-hour party instead of four or five will save you money. Trust us, everyone will enjoy themselves just as much. Determine early on what you can (and cannot) spend and stick to it. One rule of thumb: Food, beverage and venue should come to half of your budget. Most venues charge more for Saturday night, so go for a reception on a Thursday, Friday or Sunday night instead. Consider the season— you’re likely to get a better price for a venue in January than you would for the same spot in June. Because the guest list will be smaller, consider a destination wedding. It may cost less than a traditional event held in your hometown. Check into bed and breakfast venues in your area and place firm limits on your guest list. When deciding between an indoor or outdoor space, figure in the cost of a tent rental: If it rains, a tent is worth every penny.

DRINK UP

Forget the full bar. Instead, serve beer and wine (both red and white) with one or two signature cocktails that you’ve personalized with a cute name and your wedding colors. If you're holding your event near a vineyard or microbrewery, buy your wines and beers from them. Keeping to local products gives your celebration a special touch (and it’s cheaper). Don’t forget to have some inexpensive (nonalcoholic) drinks on hand. Consider fresh lemonade in tall, sugar-rimmed glasses for a warm-weather wedding or sparkling water with wedges of orange, lemon or lime. If you’re stocking your own bar, do your homework. MUSIC NOTES

32

Want a live band? Hire talented students from a local music school to perform at the ceremony. Ask to hear them play—they may be just as good as professionals, and charge you less. And stay local: If a band has to travel for more than an hour, your costs will increase. If you’re deciding whether to go with a fivepiece band or a DJ, you’ll save at least half by choosing the DJ. Or, why not be your own DJ? Create customized playlists for the ceremony and the reception on your phone or laptop, hook up to rented speakers and enjoy! Negotiate a deal that you like. The closer you are to the wedding date (six months or less), the likelier it is that the band leader will work on your terms. Find out if one or two musicians can perform for the ceremony or cocktail hour as well. If your band offers a singer who also plays an instrument, you’ll save money. And remember: You don’t need more than one of each instrument—one saxophone will do as well as two or three. ➺

The traditional wedding cake is usually covered with fondant, but keep in mind that it’s expensive because it requires extra labor to make. You may want to go with buttercream instead. One caveat: For an outdoor wedding, go with fondant since buttercream or cream cheese will melt in the sun. Consider cupcakes. These save money because they require much less intricate decoration. Have a small cake for the cake-cutting ceremony and supplement it with a sheet cake, served from the kitchen. Go with fresh flowers. The amount of labor that goes into creating flowers out of sugar ups the price of the cake. Consider your humble local grocery store. One bride’s supermarket bakery made her an elegant confection, based on a magazine photo, for less than $200.

FABULOUS FOOD

46

At the cocktail hour save costs by handpassing pricier appetizers like shrimp, scallops or other seafood items. When guests self-serve, they usually consume 40 percent more. Have a lunch or an afternoon tea reception instead of a sit-down dinner. Guests tend to drink less during the day, so you’ll save on liquor costs. If you prefer an evening reception, but still want to stick to a budget, consider a desserts-only reception. Specify on the invitation that you will be serving desserts, so that guests don’t expect a full meal. Offer a delicious array of sweets: pastries, pies, mousses and a dramatic flaming treat like Bananas Foster. To ac-

If you like fruit fillings, think seasonal. Strawberries can cost triple the price out of season so consult with your baker to stay on budget. The baker may calculate the price by averaging the cost of different flavors, so plan carefully. If you have the most expensive flavor on the bottom layer (the biggest), it will cost more. Traditionally, couples save the cake’s top layer to share on their first anniversary. If you and your fiancé don’t think you’ll be ready to dig in, forgo that extra layer and save some dough. Have a dessert buffet featuring pastries and other sweets and save money by having only a small cake for your cake cutting. The cheesecake option can be a boon because it costs less. Arrange the cheesecakes on pedestals of varying heights— they will resemble tiers—and offer sauces, such as chocolate and kiwi.

company, serve champagne or prosecco and specialty coffees and teas. Another increasingly popular choice is the cocktail party reception. And with good reason: You’ll save thousands on food and decorations; after all, you can forgo big floral arrangements for your tables and adorn small cocktail tables with candles and modest bunches of blooms. Hand-pass hors d’oeuvres like mini pigsin-a-blanket, grilled cheese sandwiches and mini quiches. On a multi-tiered table offer finger foods like Italian breads, olives, artichoke hearts and cheeses (at room temperature), finger fruits and salads. Consider a refined winetasting reception. Guests can sample from an array of small dishes at food stations, each matched with a special wine. Printed cards

on small tapas-style plates, guests won’t notice or care if the fare is quite simple. Crudites don’t actually have to be, well, crude just because you’re on a budget. How about an array of artichoke hearts, broccoli florets and radishes cut in shapes—instead of carrot sticks and celery. Comparison shop for cocktail-party offerings. Seafood like mussels or calimari are usually half the price of shrimp cocktail. Your caterer should be able to offer guidance about other lowercost selections. Instead of traditional cocktail-party fare, go for cozy comfort food like macaroni and cheese in martini glasses, mini grilled cheese bites and tiny crab cakes. (Hint: These low-cost goodies are guaranteed to be crowd-pleasers!)

can explain the pairing. Go for a rich look at a low cost: Caterers often suggest putting out lots of lush salads and grilled vegetables in unusual platters, like colorful bowls and big woks, for a great presentation. Also keep in mind that people eat with their eyes first, and if you display food beautifully, as

Theme stations are always popular, and a fajita or Thai station are not budget-busters. Consider pyramids of basmati and jasmine rice, egg noodles and condiments. Other options: a mashed-potato bar where guests can top spuds with bacon and sour cream, or a panini bar that serves grilled sandwiches.

CAKES & DESSERTS

56

How about a pierogi bar? These potatostuffed morsels of dough, served with cheese or spinach and a sauce, are a terrific variation on low-cost comfort food. A perfect (and inexpensive) appetizer option for a cool-weather wedding: Serve miniature cups of soup like clam chowder or acorn squash. In warm weather, consider mini cups of cold soup like gazpacho. Two kinds of stations to skip: first, the raw bar, which will be quite expensive; second: a carving station. Prime rib, ham and pork loin are too heavy—and costly—for cocktail-hour fare. After nibbling on appetizers, your guests will not need a five-course dinner. Three will do—salad, an entrée and dessert. Use a delicious sauce on a simple pasta or chicken dish to up the wow factor. Ask your caterer for lowcost recommendations. A sophisticated salad course—like spring greens—can elegantly offset a less costly entrée. Forgo the filet. Your caterer can show you price options for different cuts of lamb and pork as well as beef. Braised boneless short ribs are a great choice. For savings of up to 20 percent, consider family-style dishes: think big bowls of pasta or platters of sliced meat that guests can pass around the table. Add interest to pasta —a good budget choice—by considering more unusual varieties, like mushroom ravioli or spinach and cheese tortellini. Beware the buffet option. It won’t necessarily cost less than a sit-down

dinner because you have to supply more food than you would for a plated meal. Do a cost comparison before you make a decision. Cut out the bubbly; guests can toast with whatever they’re drinking. Serve a duet plate for every guest. For example, you might serve a plate of beef medallions and grilled shrimp or crab cakes. You’ll save on the amount of food you offer—and on costs. Before deciding on a seafood entrée, find out from the caterer what will be in season at the time of your wedding: A seasonal choice will save you hundreds of dollars. Have your caterer patronize local farms for produce; not only is it fresher and better-tasting but also more cost-effective. Consider a vegetarian entrée option. These are usually less expensive, and becoming ever more popular. For side dishes, consider risotto instead of potatoes for something inexpensive and a bit unusual. A simple meal will seem special when you consider the visuals. Colorfulvegetables on low-cost chicken can make all the difference. Consider a modified DIY approach: One groom’s cousin baked enchiladas, and the couple ordered more food from local Mexican outposts. Hint: Don’t make the wedding meal yourselves—that's too DIY for your own sanity! To feed your photographer and musicians, offer lower-cost food—this may cost 60 percent less per person. If children will be attending, choose a caterer who offers free or half-priced meals for kids.

TRANSPORTATION

76

Instead of renting a limo, go with a less costly option like a party van from a local carrental company. Whether you decide to book a limo or a van or any other sort of transportation, do this at least six months in advance of the wedding in order to get the best deal. Ask about any special wedding packages a car-rental company may have. A typical one may offer three hours of service, a bottle of champagne and a tuxedo-bedecked driver for about $400 (depending on your location). Remember that white limos will always cost you more than black or silver ones. Don’t have the car that brings you to the ceremony wait for you all day—hourly rates will add up quickly. Have a different car pick you up later, after the reception.

INVITATIONS

80

If you, your fiancé or your friends are DIY-ers, consider creating your own invites by hand or high-quality printer. Your crafts store will have invitation and program kits—you can really get some unique effects this way. Don’t pay extra to have your invitations assembled; just get the bridal party together and set up an assembly line. If you have a friend who happens to be a terrific calligrapher, have her address your invitations as her gift to you—rather than paying someone else to do so. Calligraphic fonts that look like the real thing are readily available. Free font sources: searchfreefonts. com, highfonts.com, dafont.com. Choose basic black ink for your invitations and other stationery. Prices go up if you choose colored inks or a deluxe foil-stamp process. Also, colored paper and unconventional shapes tend to be more expensive than white or ecru or the standard square or rectangle. Order your thank-you notes when you order your invitations. Some stationers give bulk discounts. ➺

FLOWERS & DECOR

ding planner with Evantine Design in Philadelphia, points out: “It’s less expensive to buy an apple than an orchid!” Sure, peonies may be your favorite flower, but if you’re tying the knot in winter, these springtime beauties will cost you a pretty penny. A good florist should be able to suggest in-season blooms that get the look and feel of your out-of-season favorites. Be sure to do your research on flowers (go to bridalguide.com/flowersbyseason to learn what blooms will be in season at the time of your wedding). If your wedding day happens to fall on Easter, Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day, you may pay more for your flowers. On the other hand, scheduling a wedding around a holiday can work in your favor: Your reception spot may already be decked out—saving you a small fortune! Less is more. The more elaborate the arrangements, the higher your bill. For simple elegance, consider a few roses, tulips or even orchids submerged in water. A cluster of rose petals floating in water in clear bowls are pleasing to look at, too. Be sure to use all kinds of candles to good advantage: Place flickering votives, pillar candles or tapers between floral arrangements and create a stylish look on a mere shoestring. Keep ceremony flowers simple by only placing arrangements near the spot where you’ll be exchanging vows, not on every aisle seat or pew.

90

91

92

95

Must you place flowers on tables? Of course not. Pick one focal point—perhaps the entrance or the front corners of the room—and place just one gorgeous arrangement there. Adorn plain white tablecloths by layering organza or tulle on top (which costs just a few dollars a yard). Or you may want to forgo the linens entirely and cover your tables with mirrors or frosted glass. The finished look will be artfully glitzy, yet the cost

PICTURE PERFECT

98

If a photographer you love is out of range of your budget, find out if you can wait till after the wedding to order proofs or albums. That way, you can put some of your gift money to good use. Point and shoot videography is the least expensive option (around $1,800). For this fee, you’ll get nutsand-bolts footage of your wedding. Tell the videographer to avoid gimmicky graphics and not to ask guests “to say a few words” to the camera (if you find this tacky). With plain “point and shoot,” the best treatment is simple and classic. The most surefire way of finding a photographer and videographer who are right for you is to get recommendations from friends and family. However, be sure to carefully consider the work of many pros before making a decision about whom to hire—and always keep in mind that the most expensive choice is not necessarily the best. Photography is no place to skimp. Your photos are the tangible mementoes of your wedding day—but if you do know someone who is just getting started, you may get a more affordable deal. A caveat: Make sure the work is top quality. Ask for references from former brides and grooms who have used the pro’s services. 

Have artistic friends pitch in on your wedding. A friend who’s got a penchant for flowers can handle your table arrangements and floral details. Another way to go: Hire a florist to do just one arrangement and then have your friends and family copy it for all the tables. Potted plants make attractive table decor—and cost considerably less than floral arrangements do. Make the most of greenery in other ways; put plenty of it in your centerpieces to save money on flowers. Potted blooms are also a less expensive choice; check at your local nursery. Another option: Incorporate locally grown flowers and grasses into your arrangements. Buy flowers wholesale in a local market or online, and pay a florist to do simple centerpieces. Want to keep things really easy? Do one look in abundance and make an impact. Place tons of branches, like curly willow or dogwood, in urns or tall glass vases from the dollar store; for a bit more flair, hang LED tea lights from them with ribbons in your wedding colors. Try groupings of the same flower in different hues for an affordably stylish look. Cluster vases of different sizes in interesting configurations on tables. Use fruits and vegetables to fill out arrangements; this way, you can create a sense of colorful abundance without excessive cost. As Melissa Paul, a wed-

TRUE COLORS Find your perfect palette with celebration and wedding expert David Tutera.

CHOOSING A COLOR SCHEME ISN’T just about picking a color; it’s about setting a style. Where does color first get infused? It starts out with color in the invitations, the color of the bridesmaid dresses, the embellishments for the groomsmen, the tablecloths, the flowers, the cake and, ultimately, the lighting. What does color do? It sets a tone, a mood and a powerful, palpable energy. I’ve always said you should not go beyond three colors: Any more than that can result in a look that’s a little too juvenile or circuslike. So either pick three different colors or variations of one overall color—if the latter is the case, you can have more than three shades (e.g. five or seven shades of blue).

Here are some of my favorite palettes: Everyone knows my favorite color is blue. It’s the color of my brand, it’s soothing, calming and it of course fits in with the “something blue” aspect, which should definitely be in your wedding. Think about working in multiple iterations of this dreamy color, along with white and silver or pewter (but not both).

A GOOD RULE OF THUMB IS NOT TO OVERDO IT. Go regal with a combination of violets. Plums and burgundy jewel tones are a perfect match when paired with lighter accent shades like creams or lavenders, imparting a royal look, perfect for fall or winter weddings.

PHOTOGRAPHY: © BEN AGUIRRE PHOTOGRAPHY

Considering a classic approach? Classic to me is whites with ivory and a touch of pewter or silver—super refined and very traditional. Black and gold are great when it comes to adding sophisticated glam. The bold combination has a modern vibe, while retaining a classic, opulent look. Don’t limit yourself: Use a few different shades of gold, including both metallic and non-metallic versions. A modern color scheme is pure diamond white across the board—literally just one color. If you wish, sprinkle in some accent colors, which could be metallic (no gold) and one strong color (e.g. purple, red, cobalt blue)—or simply a solid white paired with a metallic.

Stick with a variation of one hue or no more than three different colors. You don’t want to overwhelm yourself or your guests with too much of a good thing—leave some room to breathe—and dream. Now, exhale slowly—and get started.

Whether you’re holding your wedding near the seashore or in a lush garden, mint greens, soft creams and pops of pretty peach tones create the perfect contrast of warm and cool within this fresh color palette. The striking combination of pastels really captures the beauty of a light, airy affair. Don’t be afraid to even add flashes of a metallic (like gold, silver or copper) as an accent. With vibes both casual and elegant at once, coral plays well with a plethora of palettes. Chic, upbeat, yet warm and calming, coral works well no matter the season. Think about coordinating it with ombréed tones of peach, apricot, sand and beige, or let it take the starring role, as we did at a recent celebration, embellished with robin’s egg blue and lilac as well as olive green.  Sept/Oct 2023 BRIDALGUIDE.COM 43

Vive l’Amour Alix Greenberg and Rob Lazar celebrated their union with family and friends on the forever chic island of St. Barth. PHOTOGRAPHY BY DIANE CORIAT @DINGHYLAB

August 2020 found Alix Greenberg (founder and CEO of ArtSugar) in semi-lockdown, texting back and forth with attorney Rob Lazar, the brother in law of a friend who sensed they’d be a good match. Texting led to meeting IRL in December, and an ever-blossoming romance. By early 2022, Rob was ready to propose. Under the pretext of paying a visit to Alix’s parents in her childhood home, the couple strolled to their destination, making a slight detour into leafy Carl Schurz Park on NYC’s Upper East Side, directly across the street from where Alix grew up. Rob got down on one knee. Alix, “shocked and crying,” knelt down to meet him on her knee, after which the couple ambled over to Alix’s parents’ apartment, where both families were waiting to celebrate. “It was an amazing and special day,” Alix says—as was their February 2023 wedding itself!

62 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Sept/August 2023

“Our friend Darren Sukonick officiated the wedding as well as our cantor from Temple Emanu-El, who co-officiated and sang,” Alix tells us. Her bouquet included orange ranunculus, mokara orchids and salmon roses. The chuppah was covered in white orchids. Design: B Floral Events. Choosing the wedding location, Gyp Sea Beach, was a no-brainer. Alix’s family has been visiting St. Barth since 1985 (and her parents honeymooned there!). Plus “Rob and I went there together and he loved it,” Alix says. “We wanted a place that felt like us for our wedding. Any other place just didn’t feel right!”

Alix’s love of blue and orange extended to their island transport.

The prevailing palette, blue and orange, Alix’s favorite colors, were seen in both florals and table linens. All vendors were local, including planner Nelly Roussel at Gold’n Guest Events St. Barth. “Our family has visited St Barth for so many years, it was important for us to give back to the local economy,” Alix says.

“Arty yet elegant bohemian,” was the design ethos, realized in decor that was an unexpected mix of sleek orchids with natural woods and brushy pampas grass. Israel-based artist Danny Azoulay designed the ketubah (above), which was signed by family friends Mona Seltzer (who designed all the paper goods) and Jeffrey Kaplan. Fun fact: “Mona introduced my parents to each other!” Alix tells us.

64 BRIDALGUIDE.COM

The fireworks (a total surprise!) were planned by Charlotte’s dad.

Personal touches abounded. Alix crafted place cards out of teal sea glass and made gold safety pins with charms from her past for her family to wear; Her mother sang a sentimental song in lieu of a speech. “She practiced with her cantor.” Alix says. “I thought I would pass out from nerves walking down the aisle, but it ended up being the easiest thing. It was so meaningful being up there sharing our vows. I loved every minute of it!”

At this fit for the big-screen estate that’s been owned by the same family for generations in the cinematically gorgeous hills of Umbria, a celebrated culinary Italian region known for truffles, wine and chocolate, guests are warmly welcomed to intimate accommodations ranging from personal villas and a private apartment to sumptuous guest rooms. Activities at the 18,000acre expanse include farm tours, olive grove visits, strolling the winery and, of course, savoring all of its bounty. The honey-tasting flight, led by the head gardener, showcases the beehives, after which guests are treated to a series of sweet honeys to sample (room rates start $1,800 for a two-person villa; murlo.com).

The homey Tenuta di Murlo in Italy.

There’s something different about waking up and smelling the morning’s first cup of Joe when you are in one of the world’s most prolific coffee producing countries. At this adults-only hideaway deep in the misted rainforest below the Arenal Volcano—which itself is a postcard-perfect phenomenon that helps create the namesake healing waters of the resort’s private soaking pools—coffee is an art form. Baristas at the property’s dedicated espresso bar, Mi Cafecito, craft coffee flights showcasing beans roasted on-site and featuring different toasts, washes, and growing altitudes (room rates start at $1,140 a night; nayararesorts.com).

Stately Fife Arms in Scotland.

Fife Arms, Scotland History buffs, art lovers and monarchists all repose in regal style at this stately manor near Balmoral Palace, a summer home of the House of Windsor in the Scottish Highlands. Along with 46 individually appointed accommodations designed in homage to famous guests, the hotel boasts more than 112 works of art, including one created by Queen Victoria. Traditional experiences include tartan design (guests work alongside textile designers to craft a bespoke plaid), guided castle tours with local historians and an on-site Whiskey Afternoon Tea. The four-whiskey flight is paired with sweet treats to compliment the spirits’ flavor profiles (room rates start at about $405 a night; thefifearms.com). ¢

FUN FACT: According to Merriam Webster, “the word flight, and the one connected to beverage and food tastings is derived from the sense of ‘a group of similar beings or objects flying.’” 9

REAL DESTINATION WEDDING

BALI

THIS COUPLE QUIETLY CELEBRATED THEIR UNION IN A REMOTE SETTING THAT’S AS SPECTACULAR AND INTIMATE AS THEIR WEDDING. BY JENNA MAHONEY WEDDINGS ARE MAGICAL. THEY CELEBRATE THE ROMANCE OF THE FUTURE grounded in centuries-old customs, and each couple chooses a special spot on earth that reflects their unified magic. For Cypriots Yulia Bogolepova and and Ilya Loshak, that revered selection was the incomparable Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, a stunning hideaway in one of Bali’s spiritual centers: Ubud. “The resort is situated next to the impressive Ayung River and surrounded by lush forests and expansive rice fields,” explains the couple of their happily-ever-after location. “Additionally, the presence of the resort’s own temple adds to the unique experience, making for

Yulia and Ilya raved about the cuisine.

Sealed with a kiss.

Sacred Ceremony

The couple opted for an intimate celebration of just-the-two-of them (their only guests were the on-site coordinators), but that doesn’t mean they avoided rituals. Their union was celebrated on the expansive lawn that fronts the property’s stately Pengiyasan Temple. Fun fact: Mandapa means “temple” in sanskrit, and this structure predates the resort. “The temple has been there for more than 100 years—three generations, can you imagine!” they gush. “The immaculate setup surrounding the temple provided a breathtaking backdrop, which made for truly exceptional video and photo opportunities.” They add their guests “graciously adorned themselves in traditional dress, which added an extra special touch to the celebration.”

Among their stops, Yulia and Ilya enjoyed a water purification ritual at Tirta Empul (a Hindu temple with springs), a tour of the ancient and sprawling Gunung Kawi Temple, and a picnic overlooking the rice fields. “It was an absolutely stunning experience that we will never forget.” ➺

Inner Grace

Wellness and spiritual healing is a mainstay of Balinese culture. The on-site spa celebrates those traditions with inspired treatments that showcase local ingredients and the opportunity to meet with a Balinese healer. In addition to five ultra-luxe treatment rooms, the spa complex also houses a yoga pavilion, a meditation temple, a vitality pool, and more relaxation spaces.

The wedding planners helped with every detail.

legally wed

To get married in Indonesia, couples must wed in a religious ceremony. They each must be of the same religion and a member of the country’s six recognized faiths—Islam, Catholic, Protestant Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism. With the exception of Muslim marriages, civil registration is also required. In addition, all non-Indonesian citizens must complete a certificate of no impediment to marriage at the local embassy prior to arrival. It should be furnished along with a proof of age/passport, the fee of around $50 and, if applicable, a death certificate or divorce decree.

Monkey Business

Among the seemingly endless array of spiritual attractions in Ubud is the sprawling Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. An expanse of just over 30 acres is home to more than 600 monkeys, 186 species of plants, and three stone-carved temples. The Hindu temples each feature a different homage. One is for Shiva, another is dedicated to purification, the third is sometimes used for ceremonial burials.

As travelers, Yulia and Ilya pride themselves on immersing themselves in the offerings of their destination. Of course, that extends to the cuisine. They celebrated their ceremony with “a truly amazing menu from the fine dining restaurant, KUBU” at the hotel. Tables are cocooned in individual bamboo structures overlooking the Ayung River. Here, the ingredients are local and are presented in six- or eight-course tasting menus (a la carte options are available as well).
