Q&A

ANSWERS

wedding

Straight talk, smart solutions by Diane Forden, Editor in Chief SUMMER LOVIN’

RAISE THE BAR

My fiancé and I would like to marry at a beach resort next August. Any tips on colors and flower choices and what we need to consider Summit, New Jersey for our guests?

I’ve heard that you can request different types of bar options from your caterer. How many types are there, is there a price difference and what do they offer? Houston, Texas

A

Summer weddings offer a great opportunity to select gorgeous inseason flowers like roses, peonies, sunflowers, hydrangeas, daisies, dahlias and zinnias to name a few. There are also fantastic colors and fun decor details to choose from. A nautical theme using navy blue and white is a classic for seaside celebrations. Sunny yellow and coral shades brighten up any summer reception. Other popular colors include a mix of vivid tropical hues or shades of blue from aqua and seafoam to turquoise. And all-white weddings with lots of greenery work for any time of year. Most beach resorts have dedicated wedding coordinators that will help you with your decision making. You’ll be able to choose the colors, table decor and flowers that best suit your style via the wedding packages offered by many resorts. As for your guests, always keep them well-informed: Send out save-the-dates once you know the location and date, look into group rates, create a wedding website and prepare welcome bags that include an itinerary of events and any treats indigenous to the location. If you’re marrying outdoors and the weather will be hot and steamy provide guests with cool drinks, bottled water, fans or paper parasols, and always have a plan B—an indoor location—in case of bad weather. And don’t forget to pack your own day-of emergency kit that includes blotting tissues, sunscreen and makeup for touch-ups.

Q

A

The most common bar type is the open bar, which offers a variety of liquor, wine, beer and champagne and is paid for at a flat rate. This would be the most costly. You could save by having a consumption bar: Instead of paying a flat rate you would pay per drink at the end of the festivities. With a soft bar you definitely cut costs since no hard liquor is offered but guests can imbibe on red and white wine, champagne and beer. Another type to consider is the white bar, which features only white beverages such as white wine, rum, gin and vodka. Costs can vary with this type of bar depending on your crowd size and the amount of liquor you’d need to provide. A dry bar is for non-drinkers and consists of sodas, juices, tea, etc—anything non-alcoholic—but I’m guessing your guests will expect some libations. Be sure to cover all the details with your caterer. The service fee/gratuity is usually included in the contract but if not, tip your bartenders 15-20 percent of the final bar bill. TUXEDO TUTORIAL

Q A

I’m confused: What’s the difference between tuxedo, black tie Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and formal?

Good question. Let’s start with “formal,” which dictates a more dressed-up look for both men and women. In other words, men wear tuxedos and women wear a cocktail or longer-length

dress. The traditional “tuxedo” is a singleor double-breasted jacket with satin lapels that’s paired with formal trousers (those with a side satin stripe on the pant legs). You’ll find tuxedos available in a range of colors from white and ivory to navy, grey and black. “Black tie,” used for occasions that start after 6 p.m., dictates that men wear a tuxedo and women a cocktail-style or longer-length dress appropriate for a more formal celebration. SEND THANKS

Q

How much time do we have to send out thank-you notes? My fiancé thinks it’s six months.

A

Mobile, Alabama

Thank-you notes should be sent within three months of the wedding date, so be sure to acknowledge any gifts you receive before then immediately. That way, you won’t be overwhelmed after the wedding. Plus, your guests will appreciate receiving a thank-you in a timely manner and not six months later. So be sure to put pen to paper soon after you return from the honeymoon and share the writing duties with your new husband. You’ll have your thank-you notes completed in no time! ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. And send your planning questions to us at mail@bridalguide.com.

We lined their envelopes with a custom map we created of Cape Cod Bay.

We created a custom monogram, foil-pressed details, and rounded die-cut corners.

The original invitation design “Garden Stroll” that inspired their wedding suite.

We created a portrait of Lauren & Wahid’s dog, Sailor.

We addressed their envelopes with a special touch: their monogram.

The anatomy of a custom invitation, made for Lauren and Wahid. Created by the real designers in our small Bay Area design studio, we customized Lauren and Wahid’s invitation and helped them with all of their printing needs to perfectly suit their unique Cape Cod wedding. GALIA LAHAV

ETHEREAL

ELEGANCE Galia Lahav’s new collections offer shapely silhouettes in French lace and tulle enhanced with subtle, shimmering details.

Gala French lace gown with 3D embellishments, long sleeves, deep V-neckline and open back, about $7,300.

Can you describe the design aesthetic of your collections? The Fancy White Couture Collection features an array of flowy, soft silhouettes. Each layer of the gown tells a story, much like each layer of a woman’s personality tells her story. The Gala collection showcases a spectrum of hypnotic metallics and delicate blushes that mimic the kaleidoscopic scales of stunning sea creatures and the hues of precious underwater flora.

SULTRY STYLE

What was the inspiration for the collections?

Fancy White embroidered organza and tulle A-line gown with plunging neckline and allover tulle petals, about $13,200.

Like light bouncing off of a brilliant diamond, the Fancy White Fall 2020 Couture Collection was inspired by the beauty that is reflected from within. This collection celebrates a woman’s essence and individuality. Diving into our imaginations, the Gala collection was inspired by the mermaids that eternally roam free in spirit beneath the ocean surface. They fearlessly explore and live in harmony with the vibrant underwater life around them.

What types of fabrics do you enjoy working with and why? The main materials we use are

Gala shimmering embroidered net A-line gown with deep V-neckline, crystal bow belt and crystal-accented shoulder straps, about $7,000.

French lace and tulle. We believe these materials reflect freedom, lightness and femininity. For these two new collections, we created unique fabrics by combining gorgeous textures, such as a shimmering gossamer-like netting that brings undulating seaweed to mind.

How would you like a bride to feel wearing one of your designs? We want our brides to feel beautiful in their dress and we want their dress to embrace who they are and who they want to be on their big day.

What would you consider the mission of your brand? We are a brand that strives to empower women through our bold designs and to connect with our brides in the best way possible, thanks to our personalized service and extensive communication.

What’s the best thing about being a bridal designer? I get to work closely with brides. Some

Reasons to Shop at Your Local Bridal Salon

The YES Moment

You,ve probably been dreaming of this day for a long time—with good reason! There is no greater feeling than trying on a wedding gown and seeing yourself as a bride for the very first time. Surrounded by friends and loved ones makes the YES moment that much sweeter! Selection

Make the Dress Your Own

Bridal salons offer the largest selection of reputable designers, styles, and colors.Your consultant will work directly with the designer to ensure everything from the color, to the fabric and the fit, are exactly what you envision.

The dress you try on in the store is just a starting point. Want to add a sleeve? Lower the back? Elongate the train? At a traditional bridal salon, you can work with a seamstress to customize your gown and turn your dream into a reality.

Feel-Good Factor

Special Pricing

When you buy from a trusted, local bridal salon, you not only support your community, but also small businesses mostly owned by women!

No Surprises You get what you pay for. A designer dress may be pricier than similar versions online, but counterfeit gowns can be poorly constructed, ill-fitting, and made out of cheap fabrics, if you receive your gown at all.

If budget is a concern, there are many ways to shop smart at a local salon. Many brick-and-mortar stores offer discounts at designer trunk shows, and host sample sales annually.

So Much More Than Just the Gown Your trained consultant will take precise measurements, assist with alterations, and put you at ease throughout the entire process. The salon will even steam your gown and store it safely until your wedding day!

guess making weddings special is in the family genes,” says David Tutera of his new Atelier gown collection. “My grandfather Joseph owned a flower shop, my grandmother Mary was a seamstress, and her sister, my aunt Ida, owned a bridal boutique where dresses were custom-made, including my Mom’s wedding gown!” Tutera’s foray into weddings started with florals at age 19, and “blossomed,” as he says, “bringing me into fashion.” (We’re guessing Tutera plans to design wedding dresses for his two daughters, Cielo and Gracie, when the time comes.) Each dress in the new collection is created with a luxe mix of fabrics and embellishments, Tutera says, noting that his meticulous process ensures each design is unique. “Brides deserve to stand out,” he insists. “A bride is like a snowflake: No two brides are alike.”

TUTERA TIPS... ALLOW YOURSELF TIME

to enjoy the process. I ask my brides to find and order their gowns six months in advance of the wedding date. It allows for the gown to arrive and alterations to take place along with any tweaks or changes you may want.

BE A SAVVY SHOPPER.

Find a bridal boutique that not only has an assortment of styles and designers but that also employs staff who are well-versed in fashion and style. Do some research before venturing forth: How long have they been in business? What is the shop’s down-payment and payment process? How long will it take to get your gown after you order it? (Four months is standard.) Do they do alterations and if so what is that cost? Be aware these costs are additional to the gown itself.

Designer David Tutera at work in his atelier.

“Mariana” satin A-line with deepV sweetheart neckline, lace and tulle overlay and detachable sleeves.

“Jennifer” fit and flare with double straps, soft tulle skirt and detachable tulle overlay.

“Joslyn” lace and pleated organza full-length veil.

“Kristen” satin, organza and tulle fit and flare with draped sweetheart bodice and matching veil.

“Joslyn” pleated organza and appliquéd chiffon crepe mermaid with sweetheart neckline and peplum.

THE FIT FACTOR. The fit of the1 gown is a result of how it’s designed and constructed. Some designs have no structure, which is an intentional style, but if you want some extra confidence, look for gowns that have an inner corset that can be tied and secured with buttons or a zipper or a corset that is exposed along the back of the bodice. And keep your body type in mind. Your upper carriage may be narrow or long or broad, and that will help you determine if you will want a gown with straps or an off-the-shoulder or sweetheart neckline, etc.

A VEIL may not be for all brides, but to me, a veil makes you a bride. I love the drama of a veil, and I believe all veils should be long. I call my David Tutera Atelier veils “portrait” veils because I view all my brides as one-of-a-kind art, allowing the veil to frame a bride. A picture is worth a thousand words!

FIND THE RIGHT WHITE. A stark white can wash you out if you are very fair complexioned, for example. Ivory or champagne might be better shades to consider. Alternatives to white such as a pale pastel or rose gold can create a dramatic look as well. Another tip: When trying on gowns, make sure you look special. Wear makeup and have your hair pulled back or up or half up/half down to get a truer picture of how your dress will look on the big day. It’s not unusual for brides not to accurately remember how gowns looked from head to toe in the fitting room mirror. So have someone take pictures as you go. Trust me, it helps!

A centerpiece of clear glass lightbulbs nestled among a mix of blooms.

FLOWERS & DESSERT

When choosing your flowers, work with a very specific color scheme.

Why not serve several petite cakes in various designs and flavors? Discuss with your florist if you might be able to repurpose ceremony flowers for your reception.

• The dessert table and cake design are places where couples can add a little more fun into their day. A lush buttercream creation...a sweet mini-cake...a multi-tiered confection—each can assume center stage with ease. • Flowers take a starring role as well. Not only do you walk down the aisle with them, they can inspire the backdrop for the rest of your decorations. Start gathering ideas for your flowers and bouquets early on in the wedding planning process. • Find a flower you can use in your details. Look closely at your dress or lace. Is there a flower design within? Or choose a flower you love and have your baker work a fresh or spun-sugar version of the bloom into your cake.

An almost-naked cake dressed in white frosting and greens is a chic take on a classic four-tiered tower.

PRINTED MATTER

• Save-the-dates and invitations offer hints of what’s to come. A phrase like “black tie,” images of a canoe on a lake or destination wedding information lets your guests prepare for a beautiful day.

Put your message on paper, even if it’s a simple postcard. Email invites can easily go unnoticed.

A striking chiarascuro of black and white photos, escort cards and notecards for well wishes.

• Begin the invitation design process by looking to your wedding location—perhaps you can find a vintage postcard of the locale as a jumping-off point. From florals to stripes, wallpaper can be a great source of inspo. Pull out your parents’ or grandparents’ invites and study them closely. You might fall in love with the font, paper texture or design. • Signage, table numbers & escort cards tell guests such things as where to go, where to sit and what’s on the menu. Online marketplaces like Etsy and Amazon Handmade are great resources for paper goods—both custom-made and stock items. A watercolor motif paired with a mix of stylish fonts.

There’s no limit to how you can use signage!

All signs lead to fun. The materials used in your invitation help convey the vibe of your upcoming day.

TABLESCAPES & DECOR

• You said “I do,” and now it is time to celebrate—and eat and drink! Once you know if you are using round, square, rectangular tables or a mix of shapes, you can focus on the details like which linens you want to have on each table, along with dishes, flatware and centerpieces. • When it comes to dishes and dinnerware, look for vendors who offer a variety of vintage china, modern styles, patterned dishes, even clear glass. Go mismatched or matchy-matchy—it’s all good! • Be sure to factor in barware and glassware Just as we are seeing new trends with dishes, we are seeing them with glassware as well, from stemless champagne glasses to colored glass and copper mugs for specialty libations like mulled cider and Moscow Mules.

WOW VOWS Personalize your words of love with these helpful tips.

N

o doubt you’ve worked hard to stage a wedding reception with tons of individual style, so why should your ceremony be any different? Get personal, and consider writing your own vows. Don’t stress: It’s not as daunting as you might think. Here’s how it’s done.

WRITER’S BLOCK? Need some inspiration? These vows appear in the Complete Book of Wedding Vows, Revised Edition, by Diane Warner:

• I acknowledge my love for you and invite you to share my life as I hope to share yours. I promise to walk by your side, to love, help and encourage you. I vow to take time to share with you, to listen and to care. I will share all your laughter and all your tears as your partner, lover and friend. I promise always to respect you and honor you as an individual and to be conscious of your needs. I shall seek through kindness and compassion to achieve with you the life we have planned together.

• You are a kind and gentle person, and it is with great joy that I take you as my husband/wife. May our love grow deeper every day of our marriage, and as the days grow to weeks, and the weeks to months and the months to years, may we never forget this joyous day and the vows of commitment we are pledging to each other. I will cherish you and be faithful to you for all eternity.

Make a list of your must-have portraits: like you with your groom, of course, and with your wedding party and immediate families, and note how much time should be spent on each. Then discuss the shots with your photographer. “If it seems unrealistic time-wise, you should edit down the number of shots, or shift things around,” says Lefkowitz. “It might be preferable to have formal shots taken

Be sure your wedding-day supply kit includes snacks and drinks (we’re talking water, not champagne).

AVOID CAKE CATASTROPHES • If visions of a fallen wedding cake are dancing in your head, rest assured that an experienced baker will know how to get the cake to your reception site without a slip up (and will likely bring along extra icing to do any necessary touch-ups upon arrival). • If you’re having a summer wedding, however, remember that some cake coverings—like buttercream frosting and fresh whipped cream—

KEEP FLOWERS FRESH The good news about flowers is that you don’t have to take a class in floral design and preservation to make sure they look great all day. The experts say it’s easy, as long as you hire a professional floral designer. “If they’re reputable, they’ll use fresh flowers,” says Blum. “If it is a very hot day or your reception tables are in direct sunlight, it’s a good idea to have the staff wait to place your centerpieces on the tables until right

In that case, opt for fondant, which is sturdier. “Don’t display your cake in direct sunlight,” says Nichols. “Have it in a cool, shaded area if you have to have it outside, and put it out right before guests arrive. Definitely let your baker know if you’re planning an outdoor reception.”

When it comes to toasts, make sure only specific people can take the floor, so there’s no “passing the mic around.”

by the festivities that they forget to eat! Be sure your wedding-day supply kit includes plenty of snacks and drinks (we’re talking mineral water, not champagne). • Oh, and one last rule: “Never separate yourself from your dress,” says Nichols. “One bride recently had her sister-in-law bring her dress to the venue, but the sister-in-law was over an hour late getting there. It wouldn’t have been an issue if the bride had her dress! Ditto for flying. Carry the dress on board.” 

SOME OF THOSE WEDDING MUST-HAVES DON’T HAVE TO BE AS COSTLY AS YOU MIGHT THINK. HERE, STRESS-FREE WAYS TO SAVE.

up groups, says Syd Sexton, general manager at By Design Collective catering in Denver, CO. “If you can invite your office gang, great. But if not, don’t invite only one of them.”

THE DRINKS

5. notes that you don’t need to fill every corner of your venue with flowers for a lovely look. Work with your florist to use the freshest, in-season blooms to their advantage, then fill in the rest with budget-friendly candles or greenery. The look will still be beautiful. If you just adore flowers, check out botanical gardens in your area— you’ll have a bounteous backdrop of blooms at your disposal.

THE DESSERT TABLE

2. THE GUEST LIST

1.

Keeping your guest list trim is of the utmost importance. But don’t worry about offending people by not inviting them. Of course you wouldn’t leave out your nearest and dearest, and just think of all those people who’d probably be flattered to be invited but not bothered if they’re not. Your best bet is to make some rules. That is, first cousins, but not second. Spouses and live-in or serious partners, but not dates. Your boss, but not your whole office. Don’t split

Unless you’re having a dessert reception, don’t go overboard on sweets. Wedding cake is so spectacular that offering a dessert buffet, a crêpes suzette station and mini ice cream cones is just excessive. THE FLOWERS

3.

The first time you gazed upon your reception site, you saw veritable fields of flowers, right? It’s no surprise, though, that piles and piles of blooms can ratchet up your costs quickly. Sexton

Feel free to skip the champagne toast and just use whatever wine you have on the table. Create a bar you can afford, whether that means only beer, wine and soft drinks; a signature cocktail and wine with dinner; or lessexpensive liquors for mixed drinks. Keep it simple: The more varieties of liquor involved in assembling the drink, the more you will pay. THE 5-COURSE MEAL

6.

We know—you’re worried about guests going home hungry. This concern has led many couples to go down the path of offering too much—up to seven courses—

COCKTAIL HOUR

4.

Don’t overload guests with everything from sushi bars to hors d’oeuvres to pasta and carving stations. By keeping it short and sweet, you’ll ensure that you’ll need less food. Hand-pass hors d’oeuvres instead of having stations. This limits

the amount of food you’ll need. Stick with just enough food to keep guests from getting too tipsy too early on, advises Meghan Walls, owner of Meghan Walls Events in New York City. “A pretty display of cheese, fruit and crackers will do just fine.”

and paying too much for it. If you’re looking to cut costs, “eliminate one course, and just serve an appetizer and an entrée,” says Walls. Or instead of offering chicken, steak or salmon entrées, assemble a plate that combines, say, a few grilled shrimp and medallions of beef, plus a creative array vegetables (you may save 40 percent or more).

THE INVITATIONS

9.

Engraved and letterpress invitations are pricey. Choosing an unusual color, paper or design may also raise your costs. If you’re a DIY-er, design and make your own invitations by hand or digitally, using high-quality paper stock. TRANSPORTATION

10.

White limos cost more than black or silver ones, so cross white ones off your list. If you do hire a limousine, don’t have the car that took you to the ceremony wait for you all day—book another to come for you later (you’ll save on hourly rates).

get a big price reduction, you may get some extras thrown in.” And, if you are willing to be flexible with days of the week (a Friday or Sunday, say), times of day or seasons, you can often work out a much better deal. Remember: Vendors want your business as much as you want a nice wedding.

REHEARSAL DINNER

12. THE CAKE

7.

A five-tier tower covered with elaborate sugarpaste flowers, butterflies and bows? The more elaborate the design, the higher the cost. Consider serving a smaller, tiered display cake and supplementing with a sheet cake that is brought out after the official cake cutting. Or do less-pricey cupcakes in your wedding colors (always a big guest favorite!).

THE FAVORS

8.

“Unless the favor is food—like chocolates to eat right then—it’s an expense you can forgo,” says Walls, who also suggests making donations in guests’ names to charities as another option.

THE VENUE

11.

You’ve learned the price per person at your chosen venue, and it’s too high. Don’t worry—negotiate. Some brides are shy or they think this is tacky. “Uh-uh,” says Sexton. “In a tough economic climate, vendors expect it. Be honest about your budget, and ask, ‘What can you do for me with this amount?’ Even if you don’t

You need not make the rehearsal dinner a mini wedding by booking an expensive restaurant. “If you can, have it in the home of someone willing to host,” says Sexton. (Hint: Perhaps someone wants to make this their wedding gift to you!). “Do something casual, like a backyard barbecue or picnic. Or ask your wedding caterer if he or she is willing to cater it in a private home for a lower fee, as part of your wedding package.”

THE LINENS

13.

The standard white or off-white table coverings have kept their classic good looks. Perk up the tables with napkins tied with ribbons or rent stylish napkin rings.

THE FOOTWEAR

14.

Focus your energy and your money on your dress—not your shoes, advises Walls. “Why spend hundreds of dollars on footwear you’ll wear for a single day? Unless you have a short or tea-length dress, no one will see what’s going on below your ankles.” Find inexpensive (but comfortable) shoes that complement your gown, and leave it at that.

THE IMPRESSION

15.

It isn’t your job to dazzle your friends. “Just remember to take care of them,” says Walls. Be sure they have little amenities in their rooms, and that older guests don’t have far to walk. Take care not to have too long a time gap between ceremony and reception. Or consider this sweet finale: Leave milk and cookies for guests at the end of the night to make everyone feel loved. 

PLANNING

AFTER THE WEDDING your tax withholding. The first item $ Check on your post-wedding financial checklist should

be adjusting your tax withholding with your employer. When you are newly married, your income tax liability will change depending on your spouse’s income. It can be higher or lower—and adjusting your withholding will ensure you don’t over or underpay your taxes. TurboTax W-4 calculator helps you determine withholdings through your life change. Choose the best filing status for you and your spouse. Generally, couples who file “married filing jointly” may be able to take advantage of what is known as the “marriage bonus” since tax rates are typically lower for couples filing jointly (vs. separately) and you’re able to claim more tax deductions and credits together. Some married couples who earn higher incomes may see a “marriage penalty” if they have high dual incomes which may bump them up into a higher tax bracket. For example, you may make $100,000 per year and be in the 24 percent tax bracket, but your spouse’s even higher income may bump you up into the 32 percent bracket. To make sure you’re filing the best status for your situation, run the numbers for both joined and separate scenarios with your tax preparer or a program like TurboTax. Consider itemizing deductions. As a married couple, it may make sense for you to claim itemized deductions rather than the standard deduction. Although the standard deduction nearly doubled under the new tax law ($24,000 married filing jointly) you may have new or additional tax deductions like home mortgage interest, property taxes, and charitable contributions that bump you over the standard deduction and allow you to itemize your tax deductions. More tax deductions and credits. Many tax deductions and credits require you to file as married filing jointly instead of married filing separately in order to get them, like the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child and Dependent Care Credit, and educational tax benefits. Think about a Spousal IRA. If your spouse doesn’t work, you can still contribute to a Spousal IRA in your non-working spouse’s name. The requirements include being married and filing with the status of married filing jointly. Next, the total contributions cannot be more than the working spouse’s income. For 2019, couples who file married filing jointly can each contribute up to $6,000 ($7,000 if 50 or older). You may be able to take a deduction for your contributions if the working spouse is not covered by an employer-provided retirement plan like a 401K.

$

JOINT RETURNS BEFORE THE WEDDING your big-day budget. It starts with the numbers. Sit down $ Nandailchat about what your budget is for the big day. Are you paying for

everything yourself or will you have help? Once the two of you know what you have to spend, you can then allocate your budget the way you want. Budgeting tools like Mint’s customized budget feature can help you keep track of every last wedding expense—from big ones like the dress to small ones such as reception napkins. Your dress, flowers and food. No, you won’t get a tax deduction for buying your wedding gown, but you can donate and deduct it as a charitable contribution. Just remember if the value of the items you’ve donated is more than $5,000, you’ll need to get a written appraisal from a qualified appraiser. Qualified appraisers have education and experience guidelines set forth by the IRS and earn their designation from a recognized professional appraiser organization. You can find a qualified appraiser through the American Society of Appraisers. Your wedding venue. Where you get married may mean that your venue fee could be tax deductible. Some possible tax deductible locations to consider include churches, state parks or local museums registered as certified historic land or certified historic structures. Track any and all charitable donations. It doesn’t hurt to do some good during the year and get a tax break. If you make any donations during and after your wedding planning make sure to record them all. If filing receipts and keeping records aren’t your strong suit, consider an app like ItsDeductible to help you stay on track.

REAL COUPLES

color

Katherine Wehde and Jacob Zimmerman toasted their love in a stunning San Diego setting featuring bright, cheerful accents and lots of sunny colors. PHOTOGRAPHY BY OUR LABOR OF LOVE

1

1. For the ceremony, the couple stood in front of a vibrant mandala backdrop symbolizing care, patience and harmony. 2. Staying consistent with the cheerful color scheme of the day, the groom and groomsmen’s suits featured blue, yellow and pink-hued ties and boutonnieres. 3. The bride, who runs her own stationery company, handcrafted the invitations.

O

A The bridesmaids dresses were various shades of blue, complementing the bright color theme.

n the final night of a canoeing adventure in Missouri, Jake excitedly asked Katherine to be his wife, to which she gave a resounding “yes!” The couple spent their following two-year engagement planning for the big day, searching for the perfect place to host their nuptials. “The San Diego Botanic Garden was the perfect spot,” said the bride. “And we got to select each of our vendors, giving us the freedom we were looking for in order to be true to our style.” Wanting their celebration to reflect who they are, they aimed for a sunny vibe with a bright color scheme of yellows, oranges, blues and pinks. Floral arrangements blooming with marigolds peppered the ceremony and reception sites, while handcrafted backdrops and signage added a desired ’70s feel to the venue. Following the cocktail hour, their 140 guests were treated to various hors d’oeuvres and charcuterie, as well as a buffet-style dinner. Guests were gifted goody bags stocked with the couple’s favorite candy and a faux newspaper personalized by the bride and groom. The joyous day was filled with laughter and happiness, completing what Katherine and Jake say was “An eternal, four-dimensional, dreamlike celebration of joy, love and anticipation, bottled up in a softly glowing time capsule.”— Anna Smutny Florist: Native Poppy Catering: Wild Thyme Company Desserts: Sweet Cheeks Baking Co. & Nothing Bundt Cakes Invitations: Weeds & Whimsy by Katherine Wehde Zimmerman 000

1. Copper-hued chairs, strings of marigolds and an eyecatching backdrop brought the ceremony site to life. 2. Colorful signage and funky fonts mirrored the vibe of the couple’s favorite decades: the late ’60s and early ’70s. 3. Guests’ escort cards for the reception were displayed on a large wired board with a seating assignment for each attendee. 4. Floral arrangements bloomed with marigolds, yellow roses, dahlias and hints of fern. 3

1. The bridal party wore matching lounging sets while they had their hair and makeup done. 2.The couple created imaginative “constellations” to help guide guests to their seats. 3. A handpainted wooden table sign featured a constellation. 4. Handcrafted signs included lyrics from the couple’s favorite songs to mark various places throughout the day: the dessert table, the bar and the path from the cocktail hour to the reception. 5. The reception tables were decorated with long strands of marigolds and whimsical floral arrangements. 6. As the celebrations came to a close, the couple drove off in their yellow getaway car, The Thang.

Favorite Moments • During her vows the bride gave everyone a laugh when she cited an early diary entry that noted everything she knew then about her nowhusband in the early stages of their relationship. • The bride is a big “Hamilton” fan, and for her speech, the maid-ofhonor rewrote a song for the groom and bridal party to perform. • During their first dance, the bride’s sleeve got entangled on the groom’s button and the couple was forced to improvise what was previously a choreographed number.

Personal Touches

• All of the signage used throughout the day was handmade. The couple wanted guests to feel sunny and present and set the vibe with signs in bright oranges and yellows featuring cute sayings and lyrics from meaningful songs. • The couple curated a personal Spotify playlist that was included in the invitations to help get guests in a celebratory mood. 3

2 1. The table decor featured colorful flowers, flickering candles and mis-matched glassware in various shades. 2. The velvet blue table linens perfectly set off the orange and pink centerpieces. 3. A masterful mix of cool blues, warm copper, rich amethyst and bright orange provided a striking overall effect, creating a warm and relaxed vibe for the reception site.

1. The two-tiered Italian buttercream cake was covered in edible flowers and a handpainted cake topper. 2. Fun signage accented the dessert and bar tables. 3. The couple created signature cocktails, in addition to offering a variety of beer and wine. 4. As a unique memento, the goody bags included a faux newspaper that the couple created with ads for their signature cocktails, call-outs to guests who had traveled from far away and stories detailing real-life events that had taken place that week.

AMANEMU

Amanemu Inside Amanemu.

Osen is the Japanese word for “hot spring.” The word also encompasses the traditional bathhouses and the experiences based around these healing waters. As a country with much volcanic activity, hot springs are ubiquitous across the Japanese islands. One such hot spot is Isle of Shima National Park where the ultra-pampering Amanemu is positioned looking out on picturesque Ago Bay. The onsite osen is actually a duet of pavilions, with sleek, minimalist decor that mirrors the property’s 24 suites and 4 villas. There’s also an outdoor thermal spring set in a garden that’s dotted with daybeds (room rates start at $1,000 a night; aman.com)

NAYARA SPRINGS Deep in the rainforest of Costa Rica stands the mighty Arenal. The active volcano, which is the storybook image of a lava-spewing mountain, has been continuously erupting since 1968. The immediate surrounding area is a national reserve that houses dense tropical foliage, its corresponding fauna (hola, monkeys and sloths!) and underground thermal waters. Nayara Springs, a luxury retreat ensconced in this rich expanse, highlights the natural mineral hot springs. There are treatments at the open-air spa, private villas with exclusive access to individual pools and the just-launched haute tents with personal plunge pools (room rates start at $1,200 a night; nayarasprings.com).

Iceland’s Blue Lagoon may be the world’s most recognized geothermal pool. It also helps that it is something of a reality star, having appeared in The Amazing Race, Britian’s Next Top Model and Keeping Up with the Kardashians. For generations, visitors who wanted to take the waters did so in a day trip. Last year the launch of the intimate Retreat at the Blue Lagoon changed that. The 62-room hideaway is all natural and understated with organic elements and endless views of the awesome surroundings. Of course there’s a spa, which highlights the healing powers of the thermal baths (room rates start at $1,500 a night; bluelagoon.com).

ucolic, pastoral and picturesque—it’s somewhat shocking that the Hudson Valley is within a two-hour drive from New York City. Stretching from the state capital Albany in the north to Westchester, the suburban sprawl of the city to the south, the region is a series of storybook towns that hug the namesake mighty river. Here, mountains are thick with woodlands and myriad farmlands dot the landscape, as do wineries and historic mansions. It all has a simple-life feel that centers on the graciousness of the valley. Wed here and you’ll enjoy all that plus a sophisticated attention to detail that’s so very Manhattan. Similarly, design elements are the photo-ready marriage of haute and homey. And perhaps the best part—the region is picture-perfect every season of the year. Here’s where to say, “I do” in the Empire State.

MOHONK MOUNTAIN HOUSE Family-owned and operated since its debut in 1869, this all-inclusive adventure resort is all about spending quality time with the ones you love. There’s also tennis and an enormous spa with 16 treatment rooms, multiple pools and indoor fitness programming. Your wedding guests will enjoy it all plus a gorgeous ceremony hosted either on the photogenic porch that looks onto Lake Mohonk or in one of the property’s colorful gardens. (We’re partial to the Mountain View Gardens that are framed with arbors.) Receptions, which can be for 40 to 200, offer the chance to celebrate indoors or out, depending on the ➺

season and desired aesthetic (wedding packages start at $175 per person and include hors d’oeuvres, open bar for an hour, a champagne toast, a two-course meal and cake; mohonk.com).

EASTWIND HOTEL & BAR Technically positioned in the Catskill region (a neighboring mountainous area just 20 minutes from the Valley), this oldschool hunting and fishing lodge is all about going for the throwback ’gram. There’s a handful of guest rooms at this mountainside enclave that was once a bunkhouse for outdoor enthusiasts. A trio of A-frame cabins is set among the pine, fir and oak trees. Called Lushanana, the Scandinavian accommodations are intimate and equipped with saunas and BBQ sets on request. Firepits and a free-standing fireplace in the main house are the central gathering places here where decor touches like old birding guides, vintage Life magazines and antique snow shoes are all photo-ready. Celebrating a wedding here is an extension of that familial old-school vacation home vibe, with abundant wildflowers and artful fire-roasted feasts. Thanks to the hotel’s intimate size, outdoor gatherings are best for 125 guests maximum, while the main house can host a planned elopement-type event with live music (the dining room/bar welcomes acts regularly) and family-style meals complete with local beer, wine and gooey s’mores. Always social-media savvy, the venue managers also suggest food trucks for events (wedding buyouts start at $18,000 and require a two-night minimum stay; eastwindny.com).

TARRYTOWN HOUSE ESTATE A marriage of two affluent families brought the pair of 1880s mansions together into a single estate set 25 miles north of

New York City. Today, the sprawling property boasts awesome Hudson River views, a variety of accommodations, eateries and amenities (that include a few pools) all positioned across hilly grounds that are studded with classic gardens, complete with antique stone accessory buildings and original sculptures. Venue options for weddings are seemingly endless—there’s the Mary Duke Ballroom (for up to 350) and the Winter Palace (for up to 175), a classic ballroom with bespoke antique touches and sweeping property views that evoke the Gilded Age. The newest entrant to the offerings here is Goosefeather, the nascent eatery helmed by Top Chef Dale Talde. Housed in the King Mansion, the intimate restaurant showcases Talde’s innovative interpretations of classic Asian dishes that are packed with local ingredients. The char siu Berkshire pork and dry-aged beef potstickers are particular standouts. The cocktail offerings are just as fresh, with mixologists sourcing from neighboring purveyors (wedding packages start at $145 per person; site fees start at $1,250; tarrytownhouseestate.com). ¢

ZIMBABWE

Barry Rosenbloom, the president of Bridal Guide, couples luxe lodgings with a dizzying array of animal life on an awesome safari adventure.

THE 4Cs: Wilderness Safaris is committed to Commerce, Community, Culture and Conservation with their numerous give-back and eco-programs including Wilderness Wildlife Trust, Children in the Wild and Ruckomechi Cheetah Conservation Project.

CAMP LIFE During our stay, we booked into a trio of allinclusive safari camps run by Wilderness Safaris. All three are smack dab in the middle of wild animal habitats, but also full of the modern amenities one might want while on a honeymoon—posh accommodations, pools and WiFi. Our first stop was Linkwasha in Hwange National Park, the country’s largest game preserve. Open year-round (many safari accommodations are seasonal due to animal migration patterns and weather), this outpost has nine spectacular tents. There’s a multi-level main area with magnificent views, a pool, and a lounge with a library. It was here where our guide Mike gave us the up-close view of that thirsty elephant. Plenty of buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, impala and elephants in addition to the occasional cheetah or giraffe can be seen here. The next stop was Ruckomechi, located in the Zambezi Valley’s Mana Pools National Park. Perched

Southern Cross at night. Along with game drives and walking safaris, you can go canoeing or take a river cruise; both offer opportunities to see hippos and elephants. At Mana Pools we saw lions, crocodiles and hippos. Lions were tough to find in Linkwasha, but in Ruckomechi? No problem: We spied them on the way from the airstrip, the next morning, and then—the coup de grace—later that second day.

herd of impala is grazing a couple of hundred yards from us, when they suddenly look up simultaneously. A hundred yards past the antelopes, I point out an elephant emerging from a grove of trees. Our guide, Mike Nyoni, says he has an idea and we speed off in the eight-seat Land Runner down a dirt road, pulling off and parking on a quiet grassy area near a watering hole. Mike mixes us some gin and tonics and says, “Just wait.” Sure enough, 10 minutes later, the elephant we saw comes meandering past our jeep on the way to getting its own refreshment. And by “past our jeep,” I mean, literally, 10 feet in front of our truck. The smile didn't leave my face for hours. This is what it's like on safari in Zimbabwe. Every day is an up-close view into a world only before seen on television. My wife and I recently visited the east African country that’s home to the storied Zambezi River, the epic Victoria Falls and plains packed with endless wild animals. Here are just a few highlights from this trip of a lifetime.

The first viewing was just a couple of females lying in the sun. Morning brought them back but this time they were watching over their cubs playing with each other (aww!). I guess they got hungry, though, because that night we saw the females feasting on their prey 10 yards from our jeep (eww, but awesome). The newly reopened Chikwenya, a collection of seven tents set on low wooden decks, is set further north on the Zambezi River and was our final camp. A main gathering area with a dining room and a bar, pool deck and fireplace, beckons for kicking back and taking in the view. Activities here include both day and night game drives, walking tours, canoeing, kayaking, sunset cruises and catch-and-release fishing. This camp, like Ruckomechi, is open from April to November. Romance bonus: Linkwasha and Ruckomechi feature honeymoon-perfect beds set outdoors for sleeping under the starry skies (room rates start at $523 per person, per night and are all inclusive; wilderness-safaris.com).

PHOTOGRAPHY: (CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT) WILDERNESS SAFARIS (3); BARRY ROSENBLOOM; WILDERNESS SAFARIS; BARRY ROSENBLOOM

ALL IN A DAY As much as you are here to see the animals, there’s a lot of (excellent) eating each day. A typical safari schedule finds you waking up before the sun, having a breakfast (eggs to order, pancakes, fruit salad and more) then hitting the road for a game drive until lunchtime. Mid-morning, there’s a stop for a coffee break. A hearty lunch waits back at camp—the panfried bream (sea bass) was great. Then it’s time for a siesta or a dip in the pool until it cools off in the late afternoon when you’ll head out again, fresh from high tea, for a few more hours of animal viewing. At some camps, if you don't want to do two drives in one day, you can opt for a walking safari or cruise the river if you're in the Mana Pools area. Usually, you’re back at seven p.m. to get ready for a gourmet dinner: The sweet potato and coconut soup led perfectly into barbecue steak and chicken. The days were busy, but relaxing. I mean, how taxing can it be to look at wild animals all day?

Yup, that emotional reaction to viewing such a magnificent too. Sounds range from peaceful animals grazing to birds sight. A night at the grand Victoria Falls Hotel is a perfect aplenty (the birders in our group spotted over 200 species way to cap off (or launch) a safari vacation. Traditional with on their first day!) to the louder animals talking to each other offerings like high tea, it's within walking distance to the falls (Google “hippos talking.” I’ll wait). Zihuatanejo It’s been 25 years since Andy and Red traded prison for paradise on the Pacific in The Shawshank Redemption. Not that the tranquil, tiny Mexican fishing village has changed all that much. It’s still characterized by saturated sunsets, fresh red snapper feasts and jungle-covered hillsides that slope to greet lagoon-like beaches and challenging surf breaks. More importantly, it’s an easy escape —just a 45-minute flight from Mexico City—without the cruising crowds. — Carrie Bell

The hip Thompson Zihuatanejo.

Laidback Luxury Situated on La Ropa Beach, a long white crescent-shaped strand, the new 56-room Laid back at the Thompson. Thompson Zihuatanejo pairs mid-century vibes (lots of brass and wood) and Mexican moments (adobe-inspired architecture, Oaxacan clay lights) with sleek black accents. Opt for a suite with a plunge pool or sexy outdoor shower and have the spa come to you. When you’re ready to rejoin the outside world, repose at the adults-only infinity pool, paddleboard around the bay and—whatever you do—do not miss the meat-and-seafood spectacular at open-air candlelit Ceniza (room rates start at $240 a night; thompsonhotels.com).

Loot

HIP HANG The gathering place known as Loot is equal parts Zihuatanejo and Venice Beach. Contained within its three levels are a restaurant, surf shop, café, art gallery and barbershop where customers drink mescal-spiked frozen matcha, flip through coffee table books under a poppy mural and listen to DJ sets while getting their beards groomed. Sponsoring an annual surf competition/music festival in nearby La Saladita completes the boho nuevo fantasy.

Spend a morning strolling the stalls of the sprawling Mercado Municipal, which showcases as much people watching as it does produce. Stock up on local treats like dried peppers, sea salt, coffee, painted boxes and huarache sandals. Go on an ingredient run with Chef Miguel Baltazar to use in a cooking class and lunch held in the sand at the Thompson. Request Zihua’s ceviche-like signature dish, tiritas de pescado.
