I plan to take my husband’s last name after we’re married and will notify business clients of the change. What’s the most professional way to do so via email?

It’s best to send a mass mailing to clients stating “For future reference, please note my new email and last name, Marisa (maiden name) Wright.” Keep your old email address for a while and if any of your clients continue to use it, notify them again of your new email and name change. Also, be sure to inform the following organizations of your new last name: Social Security (you’ll need an original marriage license for verification), voter registration, credit-card issuers, banks, insurance companies, frequent-flyer programs, utility companies, investment firms and your doctors. And don’t forget to get a new passport and driver’s license. Plus, it’s a good idea to carry two photo IDs with you for a while, one with your maiden name and the other with your married name in case you ever encounter a problem when dealing with any of the above institutions. My fiancé’s parents think everyone invited to a wedding should be able to bring a guest. What’s the rule?

The rule: You don’t need to extend plus-ones to single friends and family members. In fact, most couples don’t— unless they have an unlimited budget. You should, however, include partners of the following: anyone married, engaged or living with a significant other and anyone who is in a long-term relationship.

FLOWER GIRL FEES?

My daughter is going to be a flower girl in my brother’s wedding, and the maid of honor asked if I would like to help pay for the bridal shower. As much as I’d like to participate, we are on a tight budget. Am I expected to contribute to the cost of the shower?

No, not at all. The bridal shower is the bridesmaids’ responsibility. The mothers of the bride and groom may also offer to chip in. The parents of the flower girl and ring bearer are only required to pay for their children’s attire, shoes and accessories and any travel or lodging expenses. You can politely decline and offer to help with decorating and setup, if you’re able. Let your brother and his fiancé know about her request. Should there be any grumbling, your future sister-in-law can set the record straight with her attendants. SAVE-THE-DATE QUERY

On our save-the-date notices, should we ask our guests to RSVP by text or email?

Your save-the-date notices do not require an RSVP. They’re sent simply to alert guests as to the time and place of the wedding so they’ll have ample opportunity to make their travel arrangements. Reply cards are enclosed with the wedding invitation only. However, if you and your fiancé would like to get a rough estimate now, you can follow through with emails or texts. Keep in mind, though, that it may be too early for some people to confirm, so be sure

to get your invitations out four months before the big day (especially if it’s a destination wedding), and ask to have responses in at least 10 weeks before the wedding. That should give you plenty of time to finalize all of the details with your pros. GIFT QUANDARY

What’s the right amount of money for a wedding gift? I don’t want to appear super-cheap, but I’m desperately trying to pay off my student debt.

There isn’t a golden rule or any set amount that’s considered appropriate for a wedding gift. Basically, you give what you can afford. With student loans to pay off along with other living expenses, it’s perfectly understandable that you might not be able to be as generous as you’d like. If writing a check makes you feel uncomfortable, then select an item from the couple’s registry that suits your budget. HOLIDAY WEDDING DO’S & DON’TS • DO give as much notice as possible to your guests through save-the-date cards. As nimble in hosting intimate microweddings as well as large-scale celebrations with up to 800 guests, Jersey City, NJ based Diwan by Design, is especially renowned for visually spectacular South Asian wedding events, a series of jubilant festivities steeped in the rituals and traditions of the bride and groom’s families’ culture. In riding the roller coaster of the pandemic of 2020, Sneh says, “I have always asked my clients, ‘What are the three things you cannot live without for your wedding?’ Before the pandemic couples might say food, music, decor. Now it has shifted to specific moments, such as father/daughter dance, exchanging vows and having my grandparents attend. Based on their answers, we do whatever we can to make that happen.”

It starts in the morning, with the groom’s side of the family, his friends, groomsmen, DJ and dihol player (drummer) gathered outside the venue, awaiting the groom’s grand entrance. It is a dramatic moment. Some memorable groom processions have also included colorful smoke bombs, creating magical clouds of color, which look great in photos!” • “I also love when the bride and groom see each other for the first time. In Hindu traditions the bride’s hands and feet are decorated with henna designs, mehndi, typically two days before the wedding. Mehndi represents marriage and good luck. It is said that the deeper the hue of the mehndi after it dries, the deeper the love between the couple.”

• “Though it was challenging, couples were more open to new ways to create special intimate moments without losing the glamour and romance you expect to experience in a wedding.” • “For one memorable micro-wedding, we completely transformed the backyard, so that you felt like you were stepping into a magical dream world. We covered the pool with flooring, built out the tent, and lit it with chandeliers and twinkling fairy lights. The couple was married in a small private ceremony with parents and siblings in attendance, and the sister of the groom officiating. • Another resourceful couple made their celebration personally meaningful starting with a beautiful engagement session around NYC, stopping at different locations where they had shared a fond memory. On the following day they celebrated their love and love of the water with a private ceremony on a boat cruise around Manhattan.”

Big Ideas for Small Weddings Elopement expert and photographer Sam Starns tells you how to reimagine your wedding and turn it into an unforgettable adventure.

The guest list. No matter what, you’ll have to trim it. How much depends on your comfort level. Do you want 5-10 of your closest friends and family there or just the two of you? Either way, fewer guests open up more possibilities. You can have a ceremony in places where 100 people would never fit. Want to go crazy and have a ceremony in a hot-air balloon? There are hot-air balloons and wedding packages that can accommodate 12 people. Do you see where we’re going? The possibilities are close to endless. Focus on the adventure, not the wedding. Couples who want to have an intimate adventure wedding or elopement often make a major misstep when dreaming up their day. They think about the wedding first, and the experience second. I strongly advise against this. Because couples often end up thinking “our ‘best day ever’ sort of adventure involves a horseback ride or a helicopter ride—but with the dress and tux? How would we do that logistically? We’ll just stick to a nice park or something.” Think of your “best day ever” sort of adventure first and foremost. Think of a day that

represents the two of you as a couple, no matter what that is. Because why shouldn’t your wedding day HINT: Think about what be a day that is a you love to do. What reflection of your ignites that spark within? Is it something adrenaline relationship? And packed, like parasailing? Dig deep into what represents you. We’ve touched a little on this already, but it bears further delving. This doesn’t just include activities, but we’ll start there. Think about what you love to do, or what you would love to do. What ignites that spark within? Is it something adrenaline packed, like parasailing or a helicopter ride? Does it involve animals, like a horseback ride or a camel trek through Morocco? Or is it more sedate, like a peaceful walk through the redwoods followed by a picnic? Do you like trying new experiences, or would you prefer to have a fantastic day doing

experience on your wedding day? I encourage you to look past the obvious words like carefree, relaxed and happy. Get out your thesaurus and look up more alternatives. And these words don’t have to be typical adjectives like “wild” or “adventurous,” etc. They can describe a visual you see and feel. Some sample words to get you started:

Untamed...Free-spirited... Laughter-filled... Organic...Exhilarating... Quaint...Emotive Rocky...Mountainous... Paradise...New...Luxurious This word exercise will also help reveal what backdrop and

location best fits your vision. With ever-changing travel restrictions, you may not be planning any far-flung travel abroad, but there are a plethora of wedding-perfect locales to be found right here in the U.S., from rocky mountain peaks, to lush tropical forests, to vast red deserts, urban sprawls and everything in between. So, what are you waiting for? Use this time as a reason to go out there and create an adventure. Then use that as your backdrop to commit yourselves to one another. Downsizing your wedding doesn’t have to mean a quick courthouse wedding. It can mean the first amazing adventure of many, with your partner by your side. I want to talk about how to downsize your wedding and instead turn it into an adventure that you’ll look back on 30 years from now and say, “Damn, that was a great experience.” Let’s focus on the three main steps of turning a larger wedding into an adventure.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

GET ORGANIZED Set up a spreadsheet or notebook with sections for each budget category. This way you can input the amount you want to spend on each item and then note your expenditures. As you near your limits, you can start to figure out ways to cut costs.

SET YOUR SITES CEREMONY SPECIFICS. Finding an officiant and a ceremony site can be simple—if, say, you wish to marry in your hometown house of worship. Even if you’re no longer living in the area, you may have family who still are and can help out. Sometimes for the sake of convenience, couples choose a place that’s in between their homes and their parents’. And then there’s the destination wedding: Just make sure that everyone you really want to join you and your groom can afford to travel and is able to make it.

THE RECEPTION VENUE. Think again

about those wedding dreams, and see how they mesh with reality. Perhaps you envision a lush outdoor garden abloom with pink and white flowers. Fine, but what if you can’t find just the right place or the weather is an issue? Maybe there’s a quaint hotel with a pretty courtyard that would suit. Some couples find historic homes in their area to rent. Use local resources to narrow down options: a wedding planner or a recently married friend. Check wedding websites and bridal magazines. Then start scheduling visits.

• MAKE THE ANNOUNCEMENT. Some couples just don’t feel right if anyone knows their big news before their parents and other close family members do. If possible, tell both sets of folks in person. If your parents don’t live nearby, put in a special phone call. • DELVE INTO DREAMS. Sit down with your fiancé and talk ideas. Think about the style you envision, whether it’s a beach bash, a sit-down dinner in a ballroom or a ceremony on a mountaintop. No talk of money. Yet. • ROUGH OUT THE TIMING. While you don’t have to set a firm date now, it’s smart to have an idea of what month or season you want to marry in. Then you’ll know how long you have to get things organized. Because your wedding’s size determines where you’ll hold the party, how much it will cost (prices usually rise per guest) and whether travel will be involved, creating a guest list is one of the most important things to do. So make your list; your fiancé and both families should do the same. You can, and likely will, cut later, but this first number will be your base. • NOW TALK MONEY. It’s rare these days that the bride’s parents pick up the whole bill, so decide on your bottom line. Find out from both sets of parents if or how much they can contribute.

• PHOTOGRAPHER AND VIDEOGRAPHER. The best ones

usually book weddings many months in advance, so get on this one early. Get recommendations from friends, then research what kinds of shots you’d like to see—formal portraits and dancing shots or a candid, journalistic format. Always ask to see other wedding albums the pro has done. • MUSICIANS. Arrange to hear musicians perform before you sign them on. Make sure they agree to stick to the playlist you give them, including any “do not play” tunes. Find out how they will dress and how many breaks they will take. Hiring a DJ is usually less expensive than a live band, but not always. • FLOWERS AND DECOR. Once you have your reception site booked, you can decide on table QUICK TIP arrangements and other decorations. time and energy—and if she can’t, it’s fine for her to decline. • Choose as many or as few bridesmaids as you want. • Give your closest friend or relative the maid of honor position. • Include a female relative of your groom in your bevy of bridesmaids; it’s a diplomatic move that can only strengthen family relations.

ATTIRE ADVICE It’s not strictly necessary to know wedding place and time details before you shop. Whereas fashion guidelines were more rigid in the past (not wearing a glittery sheath for a daytime wedding, for example), the rules are looser now. But check with your house of worship; some require covered shoulders or heads. Start shopping whenever you feel pumped—and don’t forget to have your guy rent formalwear for himself and his groomsmen. ➺

ON THE MONEY offering one signature drink (like a gourmet martini) along with beer, soda and juices. Another idea: Buy cases of a favorite local wine and serve just that. ➍ LIMIT THE LIMOS. It’s nice to pull up to the ceremony location in a sleek limo or classic car, but consider skipping the rides elsewhere to save money. Instead have your brother or a cousin chauffeur you and your new hubby to the reception. ➎ DON’T GO FLOWER MAD. There are plenty of ways to keep your bill from blooming: Buy flowers wholesale and give them to a florist to work with or create centerpieces that use candles and just a few beautiful blooms. A profusion of petals looks lush and lovely, but keep in mind you can get the same effect with fewer flowers than you think. ➏ AVOID IMPULSE BUYING. Got everything on your list? Then stop shopping. If you’ve already bought your bridesmaids lovely shawls, and you see pretty handbags that would match… and sparkly earrings…put them down.

DRESS SHOPPING • ERASE THE EMOTION. If you were the girl who pinned towels in her hair to play bride, you may need extra help with this step. Pulling the emotion out of the event and remaining level-headed as you shop for your dress will help you stay within the bounds of both budget and practicality. If it helps, bring your mom and a down-to-earth pal along with you. • KNOW WHAT KIND OF SHOPPER YOU ARE. Some brides relish the hunt for the ideal dress, and happily book a number of appointments at bridal salons. They like having a salesperson who offers ideas and selects gown styles for them. Others would really love to just slip into a store (a department store, a specialty boutique, a secondhand shop) and find their dress hanging there on the rack. Both ways are possible. Decide which kind of shopper you are, and work accordingly. • DON’T SECOND-GUESS YOURSELF. Think you’ve found The One? Then you probably have. Look no further—and relax.

QUICK TIP It’s likely everyone will be going snap-happy with their camera phones. To avoid ending up with 300 nearly identical shots, give guests a few ideas (print up a card to place on each table). Suggest one photo of each couple at the table, some goofy dance pics and a surprise shot of their choice—all to be shared later.

Wedding budgets have a way of expanding like a balloon. Keep yours from popping (and give yourself some wiggle room for those unexpected expenses or must-haves) by reining in spending. Here, six smart saving tips: ➊ BORROW. Did you totally love the tiara your sister wore? Borrow it for your ensemble! You can borrow jewelry (just like the stars do at Oscar time) and other accessories, honeymoon luggage (no reason to splurge on new suitcases if your parents have good stuff), vases for centerpieces (if you’re doing these yourself) and so on. ➋ USE PEOPLE’S DIY SKILLS. If your aunt is a sewing whiz, she can create a veil or even do alterations on your dress. A skilled artist can create personalized invitations. A crafty pal can come up with a fun favor. An avid scrapbooker can put together an album for you. Just let them know this will be their wedding gift to you. ➌ CREATE A SIGNATURE DRINK. If you’re tempted to save by having a cash bar, stop! TAME THAT GUEST LIST When you pay a caterer by the head, every guest is a ka-ching on the total bill—not just for the food and drink, but also for tips and taxes, which rise accordingly. Here are some ways to keep the list under control: • DON’T INVITE THE WHOLE OFFICE—either

HOW INVITING Your invitations should be sent out six to eight weeks before the big day, so work backward from there to be sure you order in time. The basic invite announces the hosts of the wedding (whether that’s the two of you, your parents or a combination) and the place and time of the ceremony. It may include a card that gives the reception details, a reply card and envelope. Have a sample of the invite in hand before deciding to use it—and proofread! he moment: “We met at Tony’s Restaurant in Houston, where Austin is now executive chef, and where I was an intern,” says Shannon, owner of The Everyday Bakeshop and Heirloom Interactive. They spent only a day working together before Shannon moved away briefly, then the two of them met up again serendipitously when Shannon moved back to Houston. “The timing was meant to be,” she says. “We have not been apart since.” A sweet backyard proposal after two and a half years of dating set the planning wheels in motion. “We picked Jackson Hole for our wedding on a whim. It turns out my grandfather had taken my father there as a young boy. When we heard that, we knew it was the perfect setting.”

1. The scenic ceremony setting. “Our wedding took place just as the leaves were changing and everything was now yellow,” Shannon says. The floral designer attached matchingbranches to the ceremony arch to play up the color. 2. The happy couple. 3. Dinner is served: The menu by Bistro Catering included pan-seared trout, Yukon gold potatos, caper coulis, grilled cauliflower steak, English peas, white corn with romanesco sauce. 4. The couple worked with their florist and planner, Skylar Caitlin for Chancey Charm Weddings to come up with a mix of both round and long tables. 3

Wedding-palette colors included blush, nude, camel, natural greens and “fall foliage yellow,” Shannon tells us. “We went for a mix of wildflowers and fall foliage, and wanted it all to feel naturally aligned with and woven into the surrounding scenery on site.” 2. WHEN BROOKLYN-BASED JETSETTERS (THEY TRAVELED TO 16 COUNTRIES TOGETHER IN TWO YEARS) Melissa and Thomas McGoff got engaged in Egypt, the minute they landed at home they toured the yet-to-be unveiled TWA Hotel, a former terminal at JFK International Airport. Even in hardhats, the vintage aficionados knew the artful “blend of past and present would provide a memorable and unique experience,” says Melissa. And sure enough, their friends and family feted the couple with sake, an array of international food favorites and all donned ’60s-inspired clothing. “The staff of the nostalgic hotel were gracious and made our dream a reality.”

One of the couple’s favorite amenities of the throwback hotel is the rooftop pool. They staged much of their engagement photo shoot there and relaxed with wedding guests following their celebration. “It’s an infinity pool that overlooks the runway, where you have a front-row position watching the planes taking off and landing,” Melissa says.

“In place of fresh flowers, we had old maps fashioned into bouquets and boutonnieres sourced from a seller on Etsy.”

Melissa surprised Thomas with a groom’s cake fashioned to look like Shea Stadium, home of the New York Mets, one of the city’s professional baseball teams that’s based in Queens. Melissa provided a photo of the park to Buttercooky Bakery, one of the hotel’s preferred vendors, and was wowed by the results, which also included confections fashioned into a Mets helmet, baseball and bat.

Melissa walked down the aisle accompanied by her father while the jazz group played “Come Fly With Me.” In a courtyard-like area stands the Connie (a Lockheed Constellation L-1649 Starliner, a record-breaking transcontinental aircraft first commissioned by founder and owner of TWA, Howard Hughes). Now a cocktail lounge, the vintage plane, complete with a restored interior, served as the couple’s ceremony site.

At New York City’s JFK international airport in 1962, Trans World Airways AKA TWA, owned by American business magnate Howard Hughes, debuted its soaring modernist terminal designed by one of the era’s most celebrated architects, Eero Saarinen. Inside, with furnishings by the equally renowned Ray and Charles Eames and Florence Knoll, the photogenic masterpiece celebrated the glamour of air travel in that generation. After being decommissioned in 2001, the space was reimagined as a 512-room hotel debuting in May 2019. And the result is an homage to the golden age of travel while smashing the concept of ‘airport hotel.’ At the centerpoint of the exquisite building is the Sunken Lounge, a bar area with upholstered benches, Tulip chairs and tables and an antique departure board all set against soaring windows looking onto a vintage aircraft. More throwback touches include a heavy-on-the Rat Pack soundtrack, old-school photo booths, and an assortment of terminal-era cars throughout. LOS ANGELES COUPLE JENNA NÉE BYRON AND JOSH AMSTER KNEW THEY wanted a wedding weekend that was inclusive, active and filled with fantastic food in a photogenic setting. Originally from the East Coast, the bride also knew at least half of their guest list would be traveling to toast to their union. Jenna and Josh selected Salamander Resort and Spa in Virginia for its superlative food and wine program, awesome activity menu and accessibility to Dulles International Airport. “Salamander is stunning; it’s the ultimate definition of Zen,” says Jenna. It’s a place where people can truly relax and enjoy the amenities, she adds, noting that their guests remained on-property, celebrating for the entire sun-kissed September weekend.

The ceremony was hosted on the Great Lawn.

“The Salamander has two pools with different energies at each. The resort pool is where we held our Friday wedding pool party with all of our guests. The spa pool, tucked in the corner of the property, is just heavenly.”

Sure, Salamander is superlative in its beauty and cinematic in its scenery, but what really sold the couple on hosting their friends and family here is the dizzying array of activities on the property’s 340 acres. There are art classes, biking, hiking, yoga and meditation, a spectacular spa, a comprehensive—and award-winning—equestrian center, and golf privileges. “We wanted the wedding to be a true weekend destination with several activities and events planned throughout,” explains Jenna. The groomsman played golf and the bridesmaids took a dance class. All guests enjoyed a pool party with a buffet, beer and bespoke cocktails. Then there was the dueling pianos performance, rehearsal in the light-flooded library and farewell brunch hosted in the main lobby.➺

REAL DESTINATION WEDDING IN THE BAG Welcome boxes were put together to showcase the bounty of the region. Goodies included Virginia peanuts, popcorn, local Route 11 chips and Jenna and John’s favorite La Croix flavor. Custom weekend itineraries and bespoke cookies rounded out the selections crafted by Marigold & Grey, an artisan gifting company located just outside of Washington D.C.

THE CHARMING AND TINY (POPULATION IS LESS THAN 700)

town of Middleburg, which itself is on the National Register of Historic Places, is just one bucolic gem in picturesque Loudoun County, a locale dotted with photogenic stone buildings set on pastoral landscapes punctuated by horse farms and wineries. Boxwood Estate Winery sits on 26.5 rolling acres, producing varietals based on French traditions including merlot, cabernet franc and its most celebrated—sauvignon blanc. Neighboring Greenhill Vineyards is considered the region’s most renowned with its selection of 100% Virginia wines. The on-site farm store also sells honey from the property’s apiaries.

Jenna’s something old was a gold wedding band that once belonged to her great grandmother. “The ring I wore for the ceremony is one that all of the brides in my mother’s family wore at their weddings,” she explains.

The state of Virginia requires marriage licenses; blood tests, however, are not necessary. The couple must furnish, under oath, proof of age (driver’s license or passport), and if applicable, a divorce decree or death certificate. Fees vary, yet none may exceed $50. There is no waiting period; a marriage license is valid for 60 days.

“The entrance road into the hotel once you make the turn out of town is simply magical. And it’s all smiles from that point on.”

The couple bookended their wedding weekend with a quiet moment at one of the property’s most scenic spots—the Middleburg Terrace, a stone expanse overlooking the epic grounds. The perch affords unbeatable vistas of the photogenic grand lawn, the equestrian center and culinary garden. “It is a very special place, there is often a guitarist or other musical entertainment, and you can look out and see the vast and beautiful property,” says Jenna, who particularly enjoyed sipping local wine while watching the sunset here.
