Q&A

etiquette

ANSWERS

wedding

Straight talk, smart solutions by Diane Forden, Editor in Chief

Q

A friend of mine told me that inviting our attendants’ parents is proper etiquette. Is this true? Anaheim, California

A

Not at all! I’m sure you already have enough names on your guest list without adding the parents of all your bridesmaids and groomsmen. There’s no need to invite them unless you or your fiancé have an especially close relationship with some of the parents. RECEIVING LINE LAMENT

Q A

Is it necessary to have a receiving line? It seems so outdated. Cold Spring, New York

A traditional receiving line is not necessary, but you and your groom should take time to greet all of your guests. Stop by every table at the reception and thank your friends and family members for helping you celebrate. They’ll appreciate the opportunity for a little one-on-one time with you and your new husband to extend their congratulations and offer you their best wishes.

SITE SEARCH

Q

We haven’t booked a reception venue yet. Can you give us some advice on what we need to consider?

A

Louisville, Kentucky

First, make sure that whatever site you choose suits your wedding style. For example, couples who want a big, formal wedding may opt for a grand, opulent ballroom while others may prefer a low-key celebration and choose a venue that’s cozy and intimate. There are multiple options available, from country farms and garden settings to sophisticated city sites

such as a loft or art gallery. Once you’ve determined your own personal style you’ll then be able to narrow down your choices to find a site that has just the right ambience. There are also many details to be aware of when you visit various sites. The room should be big enough for the number of guests, and the dance floor should be an adequate size and well situated. Is there decent space for a band or DJ? Are there enough electrical outlets to accommodate all their needs? Make sure there is plenty of parking and the air-conditioning or heating are in good working order. Check the restrooms, too, and find out if another wedding is going to be held at the same time on the premises (you may prefer more exclusivity). Ask to see the venue’s insurance and health department certificates to confirm they’re up to date and ask if there’s insurance in place in case someone is injured on the premises. You’ll need to know what the reception package includes, such as gratuities for the maitre d’, wait staff and bartenders, and perhaps the inclusion of a wedding cake and basic decorations. And ask if any extra fees are required for valet parking, coat check and restroom attendants. One last thing, in light of the many weddings that had to be postponed due to Covid-19, make sure you are aware of your site’s postponement or cancellation policies. Discuss the last possible date for a postponement and what the financial repercussions are. Can you apply your current deposit to your postponed wedding date and will your payment schedule in your current contract still apply? Take your

time, prepare a list of questions, get the answers and don’t rush into a decision. Remember, though, popular sites do get booked early on. ON THE MENU

Q

My fiancé and I are trying not to blow the budget, but everywhere we go the catering costs for the reception are high. What can we do to Tampa, Florida save money?

A

There are a number of ways to save. First, start with the guest list and see if you can pare down. The more guests you have, the heftier your catering bill will be. As for specifics, offer a sparkling or white wine in place of champagne for the toast and cut back on the number of courses served. Forgo a four- or five-course meal and offer a salad, an entree and the wedding cake for dessert. And instead of pricey hard liquor, provide beer and wine plus one specialty drink. Ask your caterer for suggestions: He can recommend less expensive menu options for the cocktail hour and reception to help keep you on budget. ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. SERUMS

SMOOTH

OPERATORS

Here’s your facial serum 101 guide—all your questions answered with our expert tips and tricks. by Anna Smutny What is a serum and how does it differ from a moisturizer? “Serum formulas tend to be lighter,” says Yesica Ordonez, aesthetician at Spa Pechanga in Temecula, California. “And serums contain higher concentrations of active ingredients.” Serums are less occlusive than moisturizers, adds Dr. Jennifer Chwalek of Union Square Laser Dermatology in New York City. “This allows the active ingredients to penetrate deeply into the skin. Moisturizers are thicker, formulated to hydrate, protect and restore the skin’s barrier function.”

How do I choose the right serum? It depends on your concern, says Dennis Gross, M.D., of Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare in New York City. “Retinol is the gold standard for treating fine lines as it helps increase cellular turnover, which slows down in your mid-twenties,” he says. “If dark spots have you worried, seek out products with vitamin C, or look for alpha and beta hydroxy acids—also known as

AHAs and BHAs—that gently exfoliate to prevent acne. Lastly, if hydration is a concern, look to hyaluronic acid for its ability to help skin retain moisture.” Aesthetician Vicki Morav, of New York City’s Galerie Aesthetique says, “Different serums address concerns for specific skin conditions based on their ingredients. Benefits vary from resurfacing, purifying, plumping, and protecting skin to much more.”

Where does a serum fall in my skincare regimen? The basic drill is cleanser, serum, then moisturizer. The point is to apply serum to freshly cleansed skin, finishing with moisturizer. Keep in mind the difference between day and night serums as well. “Day serums typically contain ingredients that can help to repair sun and environmental damage, while also being lighter to help with layering products,” says Dr. Naissan Wesley, a dermatologist based in Los Angeles, California. “Night serums tend to be more hydrating to improve moisturization while we sleep.”

What’s the best way to apply a serum? Los Angeles-based aesthetician Alexandra Wagner, owner of Alexandra Wagner Skincare, suggests gently dabbing serum into freshly cleansed skin. “Lightly press two pumps worth into your face, neck and décolletage with fingers,” she says. After applying you can also use skincare tools to stimulate circulation. “My favorite are Biologique Recherche Cryo Sticks,” says Morav. “I keep them in the freezer to use while they’re cold. Their cooling effect helps the serum’s absorption and efficiency.”

How long does it take to see a difference in my skin after starting a new serum? Between eight to 10 weeks, say our experts. “After a few weeks you should see a difference in your skin,” says Wagner. “If you are working on balancing pigmentation or see a lessening of brown spots, this can take a bit longer, just be patient. Consistency assures a successful outcome.”

Reasons to Shop at Your Local Bridal Salon

The YES Moment

You,ve probably been dreaming of this day for a long time—with good reason! There is no greater feeling than trying on a wedding gown and seeing yourself as a bride for the very first time. Surrounded by friends and loved ones makes the YES moment that much sweeter! Selection

Make the Dress Your Own

Bridal salons offer the largest selection of reputable designers, styles, and colors.Your consultant will work directly with the designer to ensure everything from the color, to the fabric and the fit, are exactly what you envision.

The dress you try on in the store is just a starting point. Want to add a sleeve? Lower the back? Elongate the train? At a traditional bridal salon, you can work with a seamstress to customize your gown and turn your dream into a reality.

Feel-Good Factor

Special Pricing

When you buy from a trusted, local bridal salon, you not only support your community, but also small businesses mostly owned by women!

No Surprises You get what you pay for. A designer dress may be pricier than similar versions online, but counterfeit gowns can be poorly constructed, ill-fitting, and made out of cheap fabrics, if you receive your gown at all.

If budget is a concern, there are many ways to shop smart at a local salon. Many brick-and-mortar stores offer discounts at designer trunk shows, and host sample sales annually.

So Much More Than Just the Gown Your trained consultant will take precise measurements, assist with alterations, and put you at ease throughout the entire process. The salon will even steam your gown and store it safely until your wedding day!

ADVICE

It’s no fun figuring out whom you can—and can’t— invite, but these tips will help ease the process. Compiling a guest list seems daunting. Where do I start? First, think about the style of wedding you envision. “Ask yourself: ‘Do I want a 300-person bash, an intimate dinner or a destination wedding?’ ” suggests Christine Paul of Christine Paul Events in New York City. Or, if you’re considering a particular venue, figure out how many guests you can comfortably accommodate. Start your list with close friends and family, then continue to add until you’ve reached the ideal number for the space you’ve booked.

My parents would like to ask some people. Do I have a say over their choices? Sure you do. But first give them a number to aim for. Paul suggests allotting 25% of the guest list to the bride’s parents, 25% to the groom’s parents and 50% to the couple themselves. This keeps parents from taking over—after all, it’s your wedding. You definitely can question some of their choices, too. “Have a heartto-heart conversation with your parents should issues arise,” says Sherri Williams of Williams-Sossen Events, which has locations in Philadelphia and New York City. But if the ’rents are paying for the wedding, try to be as tolerant as possible.

My list is too long! How do I make cuts? “Take a look at the friends you’re

inviting,” says Williams. “How imporand I don’t know what I should tant are they to you?” Another tip: “Try do. If you feel at all uncertain, don’t. Your dividing the list into the people you can’t wedding day should be about you and your imagine not having and those who could fiancé. “It’s only appropriate to invite an ex decline and you wouldn’t mind,” says if you and your fiancé agree it’s okay, and Paul. “We postponed our big wedding celebration to December, but we decided to surprise our family and close friends with a Zoom wedding on our original day: 4/4 at 4:44 p.m. Our three kids were in on the surprise. I had my team from Biggest Loser (Erica is a featured trainer) on Zoom. They thought we were joining together to have a drink, and family members thought the kids were doing a virtual school performance. When everyone was on, Kristi from my Biggest Loser team married us! We had the best time. We blasted our outdoor speakers, changed into sweats, ate our wedding dinner and roasted s’mores in the fire pit. It was an AMAZING DAY!”

and make sure you have a firm understanding of all contracts,” says Michelle Cousins, lead planner at Michelle Leo Events. “Pay specific attention to postponement, cancellation and force majeure clauses and ask for clarification regarding any terms you don’t understand. Budget wisely: Postponements typically mean additional expenses due to unforeseen circumstances.” “We don’t know what future events might look like for our couples. Will buffets and family-style dining be a thing of the past? Will every guest have to wear a face mask? Will couples have to be okay with eliminating the dance floor and practice social distancing at the altar? Will Covid come back and impact 2020 winter weddings or our 2021 summer weddings? These are questions my team and I are asked daily and unfortunately, where things stand right now, we just don’t know what to expect.”

WE CANCELED AND PLANNED A NEW WEDDING Janet Fugarazzo & David Mangum, Denver, CO ORIGINAL WEDDING DATE: September 5, 2020 NEW DATE: November 7, 2020

“We felt September was way too soon, so we ended up canceling (we hope to recover our deposit), putting things on hold, until our wedding planners came up with a plan for a smaller wedding at a different venue that affords more flexibility if we have to move the date again. We notified everyone when we canceled our first wedding and received an outpouring of support. We had to cut the guest list considerably so we can respond to any restrictions that may be in place. We’re hoping everybody understands.”

ADAM & NICOLE Nicole Keller & Adam Terry, Cambridge, MA WEDDING DATE: March 27, 2020

Nicole: “We planned to be married on a California beach, but vendors canceled, guests got nervous and the beaches closed. Instead of postponing, we stayed home and got married in a ‘secret’ Zoom wedding at Adam’s distillery, murr-ma.” Adam: “The day of we alerted pretty much everyone we knew that we were having a new wedding. Fifty-three caller IDs were on Zoom, many with family and friends. We had five times the number of people we planned to have at our original wedding—a triumph of human togetherness and happiness.”

“The ultimate lesson was that the minutiae and details of a wedding do not matter. When you are marrying the human you love the most, it becomes a radiant aura that envelopes everyone in joy and excitement for the future.”—Adam DUSTIN & TAYLOR

IN SEASON

BE IT WINTER, SPRING, SUMMER OR FALL—AN ENCHANTING CELEBRATION CAN BE YOURS ANY TIME OF THE YEAR. BY MARY CLARKE

Florals by Fox Fodder Farm.

Flowers, flowers everywhere, sourced from a local dahlia grower.

FALL

Tall pink candles light up the indooroutdoor space.

PLANNING & DESIGN: Jove Meyer, owner & creative director, Jove Meyer Events, Brooklyn, NY PHOTOGRAPHER: Amber Gress

A colorful wedding ketubah.

With near-perfect weather and stunning natural palettes, it’s no surprise fall is the most-wanted season. The buttercream cake abloom with fresh flowers.

GOOD TO KNOW • “Fall leaves are magical, and they can be incorporated into the decor in so many ways,” Meyers enthuses. “Centerpieces can be filled with colorful leaves to bring the beauty of the season from outside to indoors.” • If you have your heart set on an outdoor celebration, fall is your best bet, especially in terms of guest comfort. Consider a later ceremony time, say, 5 p.m., so you can go straight into dinner and dancing from there. • “Seasonal cuisine can lean in a heartier, soulsatisfying direction come fall. It’s the perfect time for butternut lasagna with wild mushrooms and sage (a vegetarian fave) or cabernet-braised short ribs.” • If you have your heart set on an outdoor celebration, fall is a good bet, especially in terms of guest comfort. • When it comes to fall florals, there’s lots to choose from—including aster, dahlia, zinnia—“But don’t forget berries and local herbs such as rosemary, small touches which can really add to the aroma and texture of the overall design,” Meyers says.

Clusters of small details keep the mood fun and easy.

KEEP IN MIND • This is high wedding season—popular venues book up quickly, and well in advance. • Fall can be a super-busy season. Between the beginning of school and the holiday season, out-of-town guests might find it difficult to squeeze in travel time.

Seating charts allow the venue’s natural beauty to shine through.

A clear tent ensured a garden wedding no matter the weather.

Hot chocolate and cider were served pre-ceremony.

WINTER

The florist selected hardy blooms that love crisp winter air.

PLANNING & DESIGN: Michelle M. Cousins, owner, Michelle Leo Events, Salt Lake City, Utah PHOTOGRAPHER: Alixann Loosle

The color palette included plum, cream, mauve, burgundy and blush.

It may not be the most popular nuptial season, but winter can be the most magical—both indoors and out.

GOOD TO KNOW • “A winter wedding provides a really great setting for a cozy, romantic atmosphere,” says Michelle. Envision a roaring fire, candles everywhere, rich colors and warm, feel-good textures. • A snowy, winter-wonderland backdrop makes for striking wedding photos. Make sure you and your bridal party are layered-up (think faux-fur wraps and funky-glam boots). • “You can have fun with the menu and serve hearty, crowdpleasing fare (like the Ukrainian borscht from a family recipe served at the wedding pictured here), ” Cousins says. • In general, winter is an off-season for weddings (unless you’re booking a ski resort), so pricing from vendors can fall on the lower side. Seasonal decor may already be in place in your venue, which can keep costs down. • You won’t be left out in the cold when it comes to florals: Stylish winter wedding staples include hypericum berries, roses, anemone and camellias.

A handpainted welcome sign.

A whimsical winter wedding cake.

• “The weather can wreak havoc on travel plans and cause arrival delays for guests and vendors,” Cousins warns. • Many people have holiday plans in place, and prefer not to travel for winter weddings due to their already busy schedules. A mini member of

SPRING

PLANNING: Neillie Butler, founder & creative director, Mariée Ami, Birmingham, Alabama PHOTOGRAPHER: Sarah Murray

A floral-bedecked cake by Minette Rushing.

Spring signals a time of positive change and new beginnings—an ideal reason to embrace the season.

GOOD TO KNOW • Nature is in full romantic force. If you’ve always envisioned a wedding held beneath cherry blossoms or dogwood trees, this is your time. • “The temperature in the South can get really hot come summer,” Neillie says. “Spring usually offers manageable temperatures with a nice cool breeze at night.” • A spring wedding offers more travel flexibility, without impeding on guests’ summer plans or major holidays. • Daylight Savings Time begins in early March, so you have a few extra hours of daylight in the late afternoon. This may not seem to be a huge benefit, but when it comes to photography, the longer you can work with natural daylight, the better, Butler says. • Peak flower season is in full swing, with peonies being a forever favorite of brides. More to consider: lilacs, ranunculus, daffodils and sweetpeas.

Signature cocktails Peaches & Bourbon and Palmetto Royale.

KEEP IN MIND • Spring encompasses the widest, wildest weather swings in many areas of the country. • Determining a wedding date can be less complicated with one exception: Spring-break weeks, when hotels can book up in popular vacation areas. ➺

SUMMER PLANNING, DESIGN & FLOWERS: Tyler Speier, Tyler Speier Events, Santa Barbara, California PHOTOGRAPHER: Rad and In Love

The breezy, shaded reception setting.

The laid-back season sparks such joy— no wonder summer weddings are so beloved by couples and guests alike.

Table flowers were placed in brass vessels.

GOOD TO KNOW • “Amazing weather and extended daylight hours make summer a great time to get married,” says Speier. “Your evening will typically be warmer and guests can enjoy the sunset during dinner and dancing into the night.” • “Summertime menus can be bright, fresh and colorful,” Speier continues. “I love the bounty of fresh summer foods, from watermelon feta salad to barbecued meats and grilled farmer’s market vegetables. Ice cream served from a vintage cart or ice cream truck is a super-fun summer dessert.” • “I love working with summer flowers,” says Speier. “The palettes can really set summer weddings apart from other seasons.” There’s a rainbow’s worth of summer blooms, from sun-washed pastels to cheery brights. Fresh picks include asters, hydrangea, zinnias and Queen Anne’s lace. • Summer nights are comfortable, so bring on the after party! Set your dance floor under the stars and don’t forget the midnight snacks.

KEEP IN MIND • A summer wedding outdoors can be hot, so be sure to provide water and other cold drinks and have a shade plan in place (A covered veranda, parasols, a tent). • “Because it’s a popular travel time, some guests may not be able to make it,” says Speier. “Send those save-the-dates out early.” ¢

SMALL MOVES, BIG SAVINGS

TRIMMING THE WEDDING BUDGET DOESN’T HAVE TO AFFECT YOUR BIG-DAY VISION. HERE, EASY AND EFFECTIVE WAYS TO CUT COSTS—WITHOUT SACRIFICING STYLE. BY SHARON NAYLOR

THE DRINKS Beware of stinting too much here. Most people can distinguish a fine wine from a not-so fine one, so take a smarter approach: Schedule a winetasting with your site manager and bar manager, and ask to test well-rated wines. You might decide that the mid-list vintages are the perfect choices for your bar for less money. Ask about any so-called dead stock: for example, a leftover case of New Zealand sauvignon blanc or two cases of a Napa cabernet that they happen to have in stock. You can also save money stylishly by offering

unique microbrew beers over imported brands.

whether it’s by the sea or on a mountaintop, in a garden, a ballroom or on a yacht. Many couples are choosing historic homes with gardens or a friend or relative’s backyard. Go for a nature museum, a Napa Valley winery, a botanical garden or a New England inn. Rates may vary, according to the day of the week and the season, so prepare to negotiate for a good price. Parks can be perfect—and they can be had at low cost. Anything outdoors requires a tent or a backup indoor space. If you have to rent a tent, tables, chairs, a dance floor and other essentials, spend more for better rental items. You don’t want guests sitting on rickety chairs or dining at wobbly tables. Ask the rental agent for a discount for renting more than 50 of each of these items: chairs, tables, china and glasses. You may be able to negotiate for a 10 to 20 percent break on the price.

Remember: The prettier the site–be it gorgeous grounds or a striking interior space– the less you have to spend on decor.

REAL COUPLES

Desert Song Becca Sigal and Justin DePippo took inspiration from the surrounding Palm Springs landscape for their desert-inspired nuptials.

The reception tables and dance floor were set beneath a “tent” of twinkling lights.

Fans were placed on the ceremony seats, each illustrated with a desert-loving thistle.

aving dated for seven years, Becca and Justin were totally in tune with each other’s likes and dislikes, from film to food, music to travel destinations. So, once Justin popped the question (during a romantic horse ride in Montana), the college sweethearts’ wedding planning fell into place with ease. Choosing their venue was a no-brainer. “We love vacationing in the California desert, and the Parker Palm Springs has been a favorite place to stay for years,” the couple say. “We didn’t have to search any further.” Envisioning a theme that mirrored the beauty of the surrounding landscape, the bride and groom went with a palette of warm desert hues layered with romantic and whimsical details. The theme was supplemented with the Parker Palm’s desert-glam decor and stunning grounds. Pops of dusty pinks and cornflower blues brought to mind the feeling of a desert in bloom. The couple implemented a variety of personal touches throughout the day, including surprises for their guests: personalized notes, handmade illustrations, keepsake drawings and yummy goodies such as late-night french fries and s’mores. Following a beautiful day of family, friends and gorgeously warm weather, the couple remarked, “Our wedding day was by far the most magical dream we could’ve ever imagined.”—Anna Smutny

Choosing to forgo traditional bouquets, each bridesmaid carried an individual king protea.

EDITOR’S TIPS

YOUR DREAM DESTINATION

Find Your Trip Style

Quiz! How to discover your best honeymoon destination.

YOUR WEDDING VENUE IS: A. The great outdoors. Be it in a field of flowers or beneath a canopy of old-growth shade trees, it’s a natural fit for you and yours. B. By the shore. You’re swept away by the thought of walking down a sandy aisle and exchanging vows to the rhythmic sound of the surf. C. An urban penthouse. Sleek furniture, classical music and fabulous art are a few of your favorite things. D. Your own (or a friend’s) backyard. DIY is definitely your thing, and you love an eclectic mix of music and cuisine from around the globe.

YOUR BIG-DAY DRESS IS: A. Short and sweet. You want to be able to show off your dance moves at your fantastic celebration. B. Flowing, sheer ’n’ sexy. You eschew any kind of clothing that cramps your free-spirited style. C. Classic and timeless. A sophisticated look is your ideal. D. Hip and funky. You always opt for something different.

YOUR CELEBRITY COUPLE DOPPELGANGERS: A. Jessica and Justin (Biel and Timberlake). Being active—and looking good—in a variety of locales are your favorite pursuits. B. Elisa Petaky and Chris Hemsworth.

Low-key and laid-back in fashion and attitude are your M.O. C. Duchess Kate and Prince William. You exude grace and sophistication no matter the occasion. D. George Clooney and Amal. Traipsing around the world (and saving it) are on your must-do list.

YOUR FAVORITE MEAL IS: A. Eco-friendly. Garden-grown fruits, vegetables and other locally sourced ingredients are the key to delicious meals. B. No fuss, no muss. For you, the best meal is a juicy burger or a take-out pizza from your favorite spot. C. Gourmet all the way. Filet mignon, duck confit and champagne: Only the best will do. D. Spicy and complex. Indian-fusion, tasty Thai, piquant Vietnamese—all satisfy your yearning for adventure.

YOUR IDEAL DAY INCLUDES: A. A long, rambling walk through the woods. Then it’s off to the park for a picnic lunch and bike ride. Dinner is a barbecue. B. Maxin’ and relaxin.’ You love kicking back by the pool and catching up on the latest romance novel. A couple’s massage and dinner under the stars are also on the menu. C. Champagne brunch. After that, you’ll take off for an afternoon of gallery

MOSTLY B’S Did someone say beach bum? You and your guy can happily kick back at any oceanfront resort. Choose one that’s all inclusive (say, one of the Palace Resorts or any of the Zoëtry properties scattered across the Caribbean), so you don’t have to carry your wallet. MOSTLY C’S Classic city destinations—think Rome, Paris and New York—set your heart aflutter. You can take in all the art and architecture and try the hottest restaurants. If you’re looking to stretch a dollar, check out legendary cities with a twist, like Buenos Aires and Lisbon. MOSTLY D’S Off-the-beaten-path is your choice. You crave experiencing different cultures, with all their intriguing sights, sounds and cuisines. Since many of these kinds of destinations are off the tourist radar, they are also wallet-friendly. Countries like Morocco and Guatemala are ripe for exploration.

hopping and perhaps an evening at the ballet or opera. D. Morning yoga. Later, you’ll enjoy a spicy cup of chai tea and the newspaper at a coffee shop. At night you may catch a world-music concert.

YOUR GUY’S FAVES: A. Tevas, a local brew, carabiner. B. Topsiders, an ice-cold Pacifico with lime, a WaveRunner. C. Loafers, Scotch, golf clubs. D. Hiking boots, absinthe, GPS. —Jenna Mahoney

PHOTOGRAPHY: JADE MOUNTAIN

Jade Mountain on St. Lucia.

MOSTLY A’S Action and adventure is the name of your game. You love to hike, bike and kayak. Sure, you can honeymoon at a national park, but check out adventure spas like Red Mountain in Utah and Spring Creek Ranch in Jackson, Wyoming, which offer activities, scenery and a whole lot of relaxation. Also research eco-friendly or certified green resorts; they generally highlight adventure excursions, locally sourced food and spa products.

WEDDINGS AWAY

Chocolate Lovers In every issue, we scout a spot that’s perfect for tying the knot away from home. by Carrie Bell

Chic Hotel Amigo in Brussels.

O

f course, your love is better than chocolate, better than anything else that you’ve tried, just like Sarah McLachlan sang. But for many, the classic confection is a very close second. So why not marry the two by getting hitched at a hotel that’s also crazy for cacao. These wedding packages are as decadent as they are delicious.

JADE MOUNTAIN, ST. LUCIA Add sun, sand, surf and sugar to your celebration at this spectacular resort on St. Lucia. Home to an expansive as-seen-on-The Bachelor terrace with panoramas of the island’s emblematic Piton peaks, the remains of an 18th-century sugar plantation, a lush hillside farm, two beaches, a treehouse and more, the resort is the embodiment of a romantic hideaway. Punctuating the 600-acre property are about 2,000 cacao trees. Like the fruits of the on-site gardens, the cacao beans are harvested and used for bean-to-body spa treatments like the mocha massage and chocolate-oil third-eye drips, as well as in candied cocktails, catering and dessert buffets. The in-house, fulltime chocolate alchemist holds tastings and workshops in his lab. And he’s on hand to sculpt edible centerpieces and cake toppers, and custom candy-bar favors featuring your favorite liquor, nuts or local fruit for your wedding weekend. Tip: Grab some chocolate to savor while stargazing from your private plunge pool. Add an extra layer of saccharine detail by picking a date in August, the island’s official Month of Chocolate (wedding packages start at $1,395 and include ceremony site fees, an officiant, a bouquet, a cake, a champagne toast and more; jademountain.com).

HOTEL AMIGO, BRUSSELS Brussels, the home of Godiva, praline inventor Neuhaus, and Leonidas, is so cuckoo for cocoa that there’s one chocolatier for every 2,000 residents. Positioned next to the awe-inspiring Grand Palace this 174-room hotel has partnered with a chocolatier

for a palate-pleasing package that includes a behind-thescenes tour and a chocolate-making master class at the atelier of maître chocolatier Laurent Gerbaud. Have it made into a private experience for your wedding guests and leave a bevy of bonbons as a welcome treat. Partake in Bar A’s elegant afternoon tea with truffles and serve their renowned barrel-aged negronis at the reception. Smaller soirées are celebrated on the top-floor suite’s expansive terrace with city hall’s gothic spire overhead adding drama. Bonus: Romantic symbolism abounds—this is a heart-shaped city in the geographic heart of Europe (wedding packages start at about $134 per person and include cocktail hour canapés, three-course dinner, dessert, some flowers, the venue site fee and more; roccofortehotels.com).

UXUA CASA HOTEL & SPA, BRAZIL Cacao trees are native to the Amazon, and South American chocolate consumption dates back 4,000 years, so why not revel in its delectable history? This boho-modern eco-conscious resort, a collection of 13 reimagined homes (some are 500 years old) and an organic spa that offers a seed-to-skin facial, sits in a quaint traffic-free town square in a remote Brazilian fishing village. Exchange vows in the town’s simple white church—the country’s second oldest—or in the sand amid

mangroves. Then feast on homey Bahian dishes and vegetarian fare (introduced when hippies relocated to Trancoso in the ‘70s) at the beach bar made out of repurposed boats. Save room for dessert, which should include scoops from the on-site ice cream parlor. The house specialty is chocolate pepper, made from cocoa and peppers grown on site, but brides can invent a custom flavor as well (wedding packages start at $65 per person. Venue site fees start at about $1,302; uxua.com). ¢

Legally Wedded Each of the three locations requires licenses to marry. On St. Lucia couples must present notarized and translated passports, birth certificates and, if applicable, divorce decrees or death certificates. Fees change regularly and are separate for notary, registrar and the marriage certificate. In Brazil, applicants must appear in person with the required fee, proof of age, national ID (passport), proof of residence, a letter of intent to marry and, if applicable, a divorce decree or death certificate. All must be translated into Portuguese. Once the union is complete, it must be registered for an additional fee. Belgium allows foreigners to marry when one partner is a resident. Similar documentation requirements are expected. All must be apostilled and translated.

SAN MIGUEL SNEAK A PEEK AT THIS FESTIVE FIESTA OF A WEDDING WEEKEND IN THIS CLASSIC COLONIAL MEXICAN DESTINATION. BY JENNA MAHONEY

exudes romance. It’s a place where classic Colonial architecture is accented by pretty flora and leafy trees, and cobblestoned streets wander in the shadow of Mexican mountains. This jewel of a destination is San Miguel de Allende, a Mexican national monument and site of the wedding of expat Katharine Hibberts Quero and local José Antonio Quero. The couple, who each work in the travel industry—she’s the owner of Premier San Miguel House Rental & Concierge, a villa rental company; he’s the owner of SMXperience, a transportation and tour outfit— live locally and wanted to share the photogenic destination with their guests. And in addition to celebrating their love, Katharine and José Antonio toasted to local cuisine and traditions.

come marching in One of the most memorable moments of Katharine and José Antonio’s wedding weekend is also one of San Miguel’s most memorable traditions. The callejona is a procession of the wedding couple, guests, a mariachi band and mojigangas (giant puppets and streamers). The couple’s parade featured dancing by the participants and began in the main square, El Jardín.

The bride in a classic car in the classic city.

AS A TRAVEL PRO, Katharine often gives advice on the best bets in town. Some of her favorite San Miguel spots include the pool at Casa Hyder— “it’s so romantic positioned under the Jacaranda tree.” The couple hosted their rehearsal dinner dance party here. She also says the Luna Rooftop Tapas

Bar at the chic Rosewood Resort is the top perch for watching the sunset. “The views of San Miguel are amazing and they have live music,” says Katharine. And “La Parroquia de San Miguel Árcangel— the iconic church that has become the symbol of San Miguel de Allende,” is a must-see for all visitors, she claims.

The houses of San Miguel de Allende are Colonial style, with understated facades and oversized doors that open onto manicured courtyards.

ON THE LIST She may be an expat local, but Katharine still has some must-pack secrets for visitors to her adopted city. First you must have good shoes—“we have cobblestone roads,” and layers, since the mountain desert climate can change quickly. And don’t forget the sunscreen—the city enjoys 280 days of sun during the year.

The couple’s reception went until 3 a.m.!

The signature drinks were berry mojitos, spicy lime/ jalapeno and spicy cucumber margaritas, along with mango and tamarind margaritas.

street vendors are my favorite spots: The best taco cart (for tacos al pastor) is located on San Francisco street,” she explains. “Senor Hamburguesa (that is what I call him, he laughs)–has the best hamburgers; he’s in front of the Banamex bank in the Jardín,” Katharine adds. Her favorite lunch is at Posadita, which excels in traditional dishes and margaritas. “It has one of the best views of Parroquia.” Dinner at Atrio, a rooftop terrace also overlooking the church, is her pick for Asian/Mexican fusion cuisine. Bespoke flags at the welcome party.

The requirements for saying “I do” in Mexico are extensive. All couples must be 18 or older and not currently married. You’ll need to present a valid passport, tourist card (issued upon arrival), birth certificate, blood test results (done in Mexico), completed marriage application forms from local registry and four witnesses. All foreign documents, with the exception of your passport, will need to be translated, apostatized and notarized. The couple, plus their witnesses, must arrive in Mexico four business days before the wedding day for legal ceremonies.

It’s common for visitors to be serenaded by mariachi bands in El Jardín, San Miguel de Allende’s leafy main square. For the most romantic experience, head there at night and gaze upon the Parroquia (San Miguel’s emblematic church) aglow in its evening magnificence, suggests Katharine.

Set in Mexico’s central highlands is San Miguel de Allende, a city that flourished thanks to a silver boom in the 17th century. It has long beckoned expats and explorers in search of a romantic escape that’s equally sundrenched as it is culture-rich. At the centerpoint of this gem of a city, which was named a Mexican national monument in 1926, stands the emblematic la Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, a neo-gothic dual-spired pink cathedral that anchors the central plaza known as El Jardín. San Miguel (or SMA as it is sometimes referred) is a lattice of historic cobblestone streets lined with classic Colonial homes, some painted in vibrant colors. Many of the homes are artist residences, studios and galleries. Among the most celebrated are the Escuela Universitaria de Bellas Artes, one of the city’s original expat art schools that occupies a former convent, and the newer Fabrica La Aurora, a former textile factory that now houses a showcase of local makers, antique dealers and gallerists. San Miguel’s cuisine is also a hallmark and cooking schools and day-long market and culinary instruction excursions are common. For a true taste of “the heart of Mexico” (another SMA nickname), book into a private villa. Casa Hyder, Casa Chorro and Villa Xido all flaunt gorgeous gardens with pools that may be called cinematic—they are that impressive and accommodate up to 22 guests—the perfect amount for an ultra-intimate destination wedding celebration (villa rentals start at $1,500 a night. There is a three-night minimum; premiersanmiguel.com).

MONTANA

UNDER THE BIG SKY. LOS ANGELES COUPLE MARY CLAIRE AND SAMUEL HANSON SWAPPED VOWS, AND CELEBRATED EACH OTHER AND THE RICHES OF THE LANDSCAPE AT HER FAMILY’S PHOTOGENIC RANCH.

PHOTOGRAPHY: BELATHEE PHOTOGRAPHY

BY JENNA MAHONEY

“Your wedding should reflect what is important to you,” says Mary Claire Hanson (nee Manley). Together with her husband, Samuel Hollingsworth Hanson, she hosted an upscalemeets-rustic wedding weekend at her family’s Montana property, The Ranch at Rock Creek. It’s also where the pair got engaged. “We’re both active and adventurous, and we wanted the destination to be a place where you could go out during the day and rough it, but have an accommodation that was luxurious.” The ranch—which houses guests in posh hideaways including private cabins and a historic lodge—is like an adult summer camp, albeit with superlative food and wine and stunning natural views. “The surroundings at the ranch are unbelievable,” says Mary Claire, who also worked at the resort. “It’s nestled in a valley and surrounded by aspen and alpine trees.” And there’s a creek that runs through the property. “It’s more like a river and it holds some of the best fly-fishing water in the world. And with the horses grazing nearby—it’s a perfect Montana scene,” she says. ➺

The couple shares an intimate moment over the property’s namesake creek.

REAL DESTINATION WEDDING

The sprawling property is a whopping 6,600 acres.

WALK THE LINE Mary Claire’s favorite store is the on-property Mercantile. It’s stocked with everything a Montana explorer could want to remind her of an awesome outdoor adventure. Most pieces are designed by local makers. Popular items include cowboy hats and boots, bolo ties, Western jackets and oversize belt buckles.

A stay at the Ranch at Rock Creek includes daily activities and meals.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS Big Sky Country is an apt moniker for Montana. And the landscape here is as vast and unencumbered as the expansive blue sky that looms above it. With that comes the endless sense of possibility for pure adventure. The activities menu at the Ranch at Rock Creek is robust and reflects all that impressive wonderment. Fly-fishing is one of the property’s marquee offerings. The eponymous Rock Creek is “world-famous for both rainbow and cutthroat trout,” notes Mary Claire. Since the property is home to about 70 horses, horseback riding and excursions are popular here. Hiking and mountain-biking paths lattice the property. And those activities along with clay-shooting, archery and ziplining were all on the wedding-weekend itinerary for friends and family.

The reception was hosted at the property’s barn and adjacent tents.

ROMANCE ON THE RANGE “For honeymooners, Trapper Cabin is spectacular,” says Mary Claire. The intimate accommodation is set apart from the more populated areas of the property. The creek-facing hideaway has awesome views of the water, mountains and stars from its hot tub. Another favorite guest room is Sweet Grass, which is positioned on the creek and also boasts its own hot tub. “The most romantic of all is Blue Bird Cabin, which has a king canopy bed and a screened-in porch overlooking the creek,” says Mary Claire.

One of the property’s romantic accommodations.

ON THE ROPES It is said that the modern rodeo was born from the 16th-century Spanish vaqueros (cowboys) who introduced the traditions of bullfighting with the cattle herding of the wild west. Rodeos were a chance to practice and showcase roping and riding skills that eventually opened to spectators. Today’s events feature professional roping and bull riding, bareback bronc riding and horse barrelracing. Rodeo events complete with outdoor barbecues are on offer across Montana, including at the Ranch at Rock Creek during the summer season.

“The view from Top of the World of the Pintler Mountains that stretches out beyond the valley is truly spectacular. Another great sight is watching the horses running in the fields.”

Mary Claire and Sam hosted a rodeo welcome event.

The Ranch is home to 70 horses.

Flowers and food were sourced locally.

DIG IN Hearty meals fuel hearty activities. Add Montana’s earth-friendly sensibility, and cuisine menus here are a delight of fresh-from-the-surroundings veggies and meats crafted in high-brow, down-home dishes. Mary Claire and Sam go to the Blue Canteen for the breakfast burritos and chips and guacamole. The couple also loves the breakfast at Granite Lodge—the pastries and hand-rolled doughnuts are particular standouts—and dinner there is equally delightful. Insider tip: “The off-menu mac and cheese is to die for,” says Mary Claire. “Saturday night dinners in the Buckle Barn can be fun and rowdy when they have live music and line dancing,” Mary Claire notes.

PHOTOGRAPHY: BELATHEE PHOTOGRAPHY

“ I love how different the Ranch is throughout the year—in the winter we can cross-country ski on property. Summer is a magical time with fly-fishing, and horseback riding, but my favorite season is early fall when the Aspens are changing.”

legally wedded

Montana requires a marriage license to wed. Couples must apply in person and present proof of age, and a divorcee decree or death certificate if applicable. The fee of about $55 is payable in cash at the office of the Clerk of the District Court. There is no waiting period. The license is valid for 180 days after issuance. ➺

“The Ranch at Rock Creek gave us the wedding of our dreams–glamorous and rustic, luxurious but outdoorsy.”

travel notes

Expansive and endless, Montana’s vast landscape is punctuated by whitewater rivers, oversized grasslands and towering forested areas that teem with wildlife (we’re talking grizzly and black bears, bighorn sheep, elk, moose, wolves, lynxes and more). Here cows graze and cowboys ride under a sky that is boundless and in every way the embodiment of the state’s moniker Big Sky Country. Montana is a place where outdoor adventure is as ingrained in the quilt of the lifestyle here as the crisp air when the mist lifts each morning. For a piece of that adventure with an ultra-posh attention to service, book into the intimate The Ranch at Rock Creek, a vast property that encompasses just 29 guest accommodations. Stays here include the activities for which the state is so revered. Equine outings include roping lessons and back-country trail riding, as well as stable tours with rodeo hands. The fly-fishing here is equally renowned; Rock Creek itself is known for salmon fly hatch from May through July and the river is home to a variety of trout. Nearby waters include stocked ponds and the Blackfoot River Folks love to gather at of A River Runs Through It and Lewis and Clark this welcoming spot. fame. More laid-back activities on the ranch include photography and art classes with resident artists, old-school stagecoach rides—request one that includes a creek-side brunch—and lounging by the pool. Meal times on the property feel more like family gatherings featuring imaginative preparations of classic comforts and excellent wine pairings. Named for the lucky charms inlaid on the bar, the Silver Dollar Saloon—a game room complete with a bowling alley and the occasional karaoke competition— is a fun spot to end an action-packed day (room rates start at $1,800 per night, per couple and are all inclusive; theranchatrockcreek.com). n

Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards overlooks the Blue Ridge Mountains.

For every couple there’s a checklist for what makes a wedding exclusively and distinctly theirs. For Ronita and Ryan, who swapped vows on a mountain-view lawn at the stunning Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards, those must-haves were superior food and wine served alongside a stunning landscape. “A venue that offered the backdrop, elevated cuisine and wine was a home run for us,” says Ronita. The couple worked with Samantha Crew of Simply Chic Events to craft a wedding weekend brimming with sunshine, flowers and stellar cuisine. ➺

ON HIGH Some of event planner Samantha Crew’s favorite area attractions celebrate the gorgeous surroundings, especially the Blue Ridge Parkway, America’s longest linear park that links the Great Smoky Mountain Park to Shenandoah National Park. For a romantic excursion, go on a sunrise walk at Humpback Roads. The moderate loop showcases views of the Shenandoah and Rockfish Valleys.

Table settings reflected the couple’s garden-inspired aesthetic.

A ceremony under a canopy embellished with local flowers.

Bucolic and serene, the rolling foothills near Charlottesville are studded with wineries, historic manor homes and old-growth trees. The earth here is as photogenic as it is fertile and the fruits of this land are rich. And with a buzzy wine scene— Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and Viognier are among the most common varietials—comes equally excellent food. Farm-fresh and of-the-season are marquees of every menu. The Vintner’s Table experience at Pippin Farm—a tasting menu of three or four courses with pairings—showcases the hallmarks of the region— excellent views, wine and cuisine—exclusively for intimate groups (menus start at $95 per person. It’s remarkable, really, how Virginia’s Charlottesville is at once both a popular destination and one that blissfully remains under the radar in some aspects. The Monticello Wine Trail, a collection of more than 30 wineries all just a short distance from the city, is something of an only-in-the-know type of destination even though it holds the crown of the birthplace of American wine traditions—wine has been cultivated and casked in Virginia since the Colonial days. And it is Thomas Jefferson who is credited for serving as one of the tradition’s greatest patrons. He began production of his own wine in 1807. Jefferson’s home, Monticello, is a marquee site, as is the University of Virginia campus, which the great American thinker also architected. Considered one of the nation’s most notable residences, the hilltop Monticello recently experienced a multi-year renovation.
