Q&A

ANSWERS

wedding

Straight talk, smart solutions by Diane Forden, Editor in Chief

Q

Is it really necessary to have a rehearsal for our ceremony? We’d much rather keep it loose and not plan anything too formal.

A

Columbus, Ohio

No matter how loose or informal you want your ceremony to be it’s still necessary to have a rehearsal sometime before the big day. You and your groom, your officiant, your bridal party and any others involved in the ceremony, such as your musicians, need to have a run-through of who does what when. Otherwise you run the risk of there being a lot of confusion and unnecessary anxiety on the wedding day. A rehearsal needn’t take long, and once the ceremony starts you’ll be relieved that all involved are aware of the protocol.

WEDDINGS AWAY ADVICE

Q

We’re thinking of having a destination wedding. What are some key planning tips to consider?

A

Portland, Maine

Start researching early. Check out sites online and find out what the wedding packages include. Get references from couples that married at any of the places you’re considering to learn about their experiences. If possible, make time to visit the location to meet with the onsite wedding planner and local vendors: You’ll be able to check out locations for your ceremony, cocktail party, reception and day-after brunch and inquire about any group activities. You should, however, be willing to let go of total control: Your on-site planner is an expert and can easily orchestrate all of the details for you and keep you updated via email, FaceTime or Skype.

Once you’ve decided on the location, send out save-thedates (at least six months in advance) and set up a wedding website where you can include a link to the resort, list any nearby attractions and keep guests informed of activities you’re planning. Your guests and the wedding party will be responsible for their own travel arrangements and accommodations so see if you can get a group discount at the resort or on an airline. Finally, make sure you arrive at the resort early, at least a couple of days ahead of your guests’ arrival. You’ll want to meet with your planner and officiant to fine-tune the details, put together the welcome bags and pamper yourselves with some relaxing spa treatments.

name on the envelope. Either way, it wouldn’t hurt to find out. Thank her for the invitation and ask if your fiancé is also invited: “I know the invitation is addressed only to me, but I assume my fiancé is invited as well and just want to confirm this with you.” If she isn’t inviting him she’ll need to explain this etiquette “don’t” but my guess is that he is definitely on the guest list. SIDE BY SIDE

INVITATION ETIQUETTE

Q

I was surprised to receive an invitation to a friend’s wedding that only had my name on it. She knows I’m engaged and has met my fiancé. Shouldn’t his name be on the invitation as well? Duluth, Minnesota

A

The rule of thumb is to invite the partner of anyone who is married, engaged, living with someone or in a relationship of six months or more. Members of the wedding party should also be invited with a guest. If you happen to be living together then his name should have been written beneath yours on the envelope. If your fiancé has his own place, your friend should have asked for his address and sent him an invitation. Perhaps she just assumes that you will both attend or inadvertently omitted his

Q

Can we have the ushers seat people evenly on both sides of the aisle so my fiancé’s side doesn’t Falls Church, Virginia look sparse?

A

Absolutely. There’s nothing wrong with making sure there’s an equal number of guests on each side. Just alert your ushers and tell them that as your side starts to fill up, they should begin seating more guests on your fiancé’s side. They should also let any of your guests know that they are being seated on the groom’s side as per your request to balance the seating. ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. VERA WANG

black tie

All tuxedos and accessories available at Men’s Wearhouse; tuxedo.menswearhouse.com/ vera-wang-tuxedo

Sleek tailoring creates timeless groomswear ensembles in BLACK by Vera Wang, the designer’s first formal menswear collection for Men’s Wearhouse. How do you go about designing menswear versus bridal? I’ve done

ivory tuxedos for women starting as early as 20 years ago. So for me it’s not that far a departure as it’s just part of my vocabulary. In this line for Men’s Wearhouse, these suitings complete the bridal ceremonial moments couples are creating by what they wear. Designing menswear is a very logical completion of what I’ve been doing for decades. For me this has always been my turf.

What are some ways that a groom can add his own personal touch to his wedding day look? One of the most important

elements is the jacket, which requires impeccable tailoring. Men can add a personal touch by dressing it up or down. The possibilities are endless: collars, single button, double button or double breasted. Furthermore, the cut of the pant can be cropped to hit above the ankle or longer with a break on the shoe. Accessories are also truly how a groom differentiates himself: bowties, ties, no tie at all, wearing tails or cummerbunds.

What are some of the biggest trends you are seeing now in menswear?

I see so much creativity and freedom of self-expression in menswear. Print is very popular at the moment: baroque jackets and tuxedos, printed tuxedos, different textured or structured fabrics. Suits are also being fitted differently, whether they are tailored more traditionally or include a more modern element like a cropped pant leg.

What tips do you have for a groom looking for comfort? I care a lot about the fabric for this. Fabric is just as important whether it’s a tuxedo or a suit. There are tuxedos that are soft and more deconstructed that would work well for a warm climate, while there are some that are much more stiff and may be less breathable. Above all, good tailoring is critical; the shirt needs to fit and so does the jacket. As an expert, when designing a tuxedo or suit, I have to think of how and where it will be worn.

What types of styles do you recommend based on body type? A longer line is more elongating. It looks great on a man who is a little taller, as it gives him more coverage. I think a cropped jacket feels younger with a tighter pant and works great for a shorter silhouette.

Is there a recommended timeline a groom should follow for when to start looking for a tux/suit and having it tailored? If you are getting a suit that is

custom made and you get to pick your own fabrics and the style, you need to plan months ahead as it can be extremely time-consuming to create. If you are not doing this, you still have to shop, look around and try things on, which can take equally as long since you have to find what really suits your style and body type.

If you could create a custom tux/suit for any celebrity, who would it be? I would love to have dressed President Barack Obama. Right now, I would really like to dress Hailey and Justin Bieber. I would love to do a couple! —Anna Smutny

To enhance the entrancemaking gowns at Berta’s show, makeup artist Charlie Riddle used Stila Cosmetics to craft a sexy, defined eye offering a subtle touch of glam. GET THE LOOK: Start with medium coverage foundation and lightly apply blush to the apples of the cheek for color. Use a thin tip brush to line lashes, smudging to create a diffused cat eye and then swipe lashes with mascara. Finish by glossing lips to amplify their natural color.

Avoid a caked-on look by applying foundation only to problem areas for a natural looking glow.

To complement the light and airy looks at Mira Zwillinger’s show, makeup artist Samantha Agostino opted for a clean complexion with just a touch of pink on the cheeks and feathered brows to achieve an ethereal, romantic vibe. Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep and Air Control Hair Spray

PRETTY PLAITS

To reflect the romantic and feminine detailing shown in Morilee’s gowns, Spoke & Weal’s lead hairstylist Liz Rhodes created stunning fishtail braids straight from a princess bride’s dream.

Spritz It Give your ’do a final burst of texturizing spray for a more undone, relaxed effect.

GET THE LOOK: Start by loosely curling hair. Part down the middle, twisting smaller upper portions and pinning back. Weave into a traditional fishtail braid while occasionally spritzing with hair spray for maximum hold. Tie off and complete the look by wrapping a small section of hair around the band and tucking the section into the back.

Pro Tip For long-lasting curls, retwist hair while it’s still hot and pin to scalp with a bobby pin.

WAVELENGTHS At the Theia show, hairstylist Linh Nguyen matched the cool ’70s vibe of the sleek dresses and jumpsuits with loose, bouncy curls to complete the groovy theme of the collection. GET THE LOOK: Give unstyled hair a generous dose of strong-hold hair spray. Section off and curl each piece with a 3/4’’ iron. Let set. Flip hair and brush upwards for a bold curl. Spray with salt spray for a bit of texture.

Q&A

JUST ASKING The star of Lifetime’s “My Great Big Live Wedding with David Tutera” answers your pressing reception questions.

Q.

I’m really torn between having a buffet or a plated meal. What are your thoughts? I personally feel buffets are too casual, but it all depends on the type of wedding you’re planning. Buffets are generally perceived to be less pricey than plated service—but beware! They can actually be more expensive due to wasted food. Caterers can’t accurately determine how much food needs to be made, especially since some people may gravitate toward different dishes. With a plated meal, the dish has already been portioned and brought out ready to serve to each table. If you decide on buffet, I would recommend doing as formal a buffet as possible or limiting it to food stations at the cocktail hour.

Q.

We don’t want a night full of speeches at our reception. What can we do to prevent this?

A.

The only people who should be making speeches are the bride’s parents, the groom’s parents, the best man, maid of honor and of course the bride and groom—but not all in a row. If you have other key family members who want to talk, allow them to say a few words at the rehearsal dinner. If you’re worried about people grabbing the spotlight at the reception, designate someone to keep an eye on the microphone (and keep it away from gabby guests).

Q.

I really can’t find it in my budget to have large centerpieces and extensive table decor. Any ideas?

A.

You don’t need to have tall, overthe-top centerpieces to create

TUTERA TIP: When it comes to centerpieces, low and lush can be as stunning as a taller arrangement; Add an abundance of candlelight for a glamourous glow. gorgeous table decor. Low and lush floral arrangements are just as stunning, and adding an abundance of candlelight will make all the difference in the world. Also, no one said you have to have the same centerpiece at every table. If you love the look of a tall arrangement, use it on just a few tables and do something a little simpler at the others.

Q.

I’m worried that an open bar will be expensive and not entirely worth it. Should I have a cash bar?

know that you took the time to think about seating and socializing. It also creates a more comfortable environment so that guests aren’t searching for a seat or wondering whom they will sit with.

Q.

My mom is adamant about providing guest favors, but I feel they’re a waste of money and a little outdated. Am I right?

A.

Though wedding favors are heading toward extinction, there are some that may be worth giving. Favors don’t have to be wildy expensive, they just need to be tastefully presented and coordinated with your wedding style. Think about tying favors in with your colors or wedding location—and keep in mind that practical (or edible) items are always appreciated.

A.

Q.

A.

When you have a wedding, you’re inviting people to a party, and they shouldn’t have to pay for anything. A cash bar is never a good choice. If you have a limited budget, consider having a signature cocktail or just serving beer and wine, which will cut costs significantly.

I’m debating open seating vs. arranged seating for my guests. Is one better than the other?

A.

For a more formal wedding it is a great idea to have place cards for each guest. It may take a lot of time, but it is a special touch that lets your guests

When it comes to the garter toss, I’m leery about having my groom reach up under my dress in front of an audience. Is there another way to do this or should I just skip it entirely? Do away with the toss, no question about it. If it were up to me, I would have never started the garter toss tradition in the first place; it has no place at an elegant party. However, if you feel like your wedding wouldn’t be complete without it, put the garter on low, and have your groom make it quick! 

Unexpected and lively touches can make your wedding an unforgettable experience for guests. by Elena Donovan Mauer

A

THOROUGHLY APPRECIATE THEM. But what if you could go one step further to create an even richer experience for guests, one that they’ll never forget because it was just plain fun? For example, Michelle Leo Cousins of Michelle Leo Events in Salt Lake City recently planned a carnival-themed wedding. The whimsical event was truly out of the ordinary. Instead of a typical wedding reception setup, guests walked between pop-up tents and played carnival games, like balloon darts and a milk jug toss. They also enjoyed classic pinball and other arcade games. To cap off the theme, there were festive entertainers throughout the fete, including a magician, jugglers, pantomimes, face painters, and a caricature artist. “People constantly came up to us saying, ‘This is the most fun wedding we’ve ever been to,’ ” remembers Cousins. “And you know what? I’m sure it was because it wasn’t the traditional recipe for a wedding.”

Spark Creativity

Recipe for Fun

Your wedding doesn’t have to be an all-out carnival to be fun for your guests. In fact, it can be as traditional as you want it to be. By simply paying special consideration to your guests’ experience, you can create a festive vibe. “Guests might not remember what something looked like,” says Kate Turner of Kate & Company in St. Louis. “They’ll remember how something made them feel. Planning elements that make them feel good is going to give them such a lasting memory of their time with you.” Put thought into what sights, sounds, flavors and activities will make guests feel comfortable and get them involved and immersed in the celebration. You might use your creativity to infuse a little wow factor as well.

“When it comes to weddings, personalization really defines a great event,” —Korri McFann, Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings

Put together local goodies in a custom bag (this one by MapTotes).

Local Experience

If you have a lot of out-of-towners attending, they may be interested in enjoying a bit of local culture while they’re in town. In addition to adding local flair in the food, entertainment and decor, you may want to plan some ways guests can explore the area. You may provide a list of things to do or go a step further and plan a few experiences, such as a brewery tour, a day of rides and games at a theme park or a boat ride to see the sites. “Planning fun activities for guests lets them maximize their time while they’re here,” says Cousins. “It’s not just a wedding. It’s an experience.”

There are many amazingly fun wedding ideas out there. The ones that will be the right fit for your unique celebration are those that are meaningful to you as a couple. A few places to start brainstorming: THE DESTINATION: Include a tasting of craft beer, wine or cheese made in the area. Have a local band play jazz or country or whatever genre the destination is known for. FAVORITE PASTIMES: What you and your fiancé like to do together can set the stage for a few unforgettable touches. “One of our couples are really big hockey fans and—it was simple but elegant—when they came into the reception, we had all the guests hold hockey sticks and chant their names,” says McFann. YOUR HERITAGES: Your and your fiancé’s backgrounds can help you plan details like serving your grandmother’s empanadas at the cocktail hour or having traditional dancers perform. YOUR LOVE STORY: Your first date, your first vacation together, how you got engaged, and many more highlights of your relationship can serve as inspiration for the type of fun you serve up at your reception.

Your musical entertainment can certainly liven up the crowd at a wedding. “It’s quite common to create a fun experience through music, and the right band is different for every couple,” says Cousins. “So we spend a lot of time researching musical groups to find the best one.” She’s even flown a band from Chicago to Utah to make sure the couple had the combo of gospel and dance music they wanted. Once you’ve chosen your musical entertainment, making a few requests is fine, but try not to micromanage by dictating all the songs they should play and not play. Instead, trust them. Good entertainers can gauge the crowd, and choose songs based on what guests are responding to or are requesting. Accept that you may hear a couple songs that aren’t on your own personal playlists, but that your guests will likely enjoy.

Budget it In

Adding festive details might sound pricey, but you don’t have to blow your wedding budget to create fun. You do need to factor in the costs realistically, says Turner. Often, it’s a matter of prioritizing. For example, if you want to have food trucks show up at your after party, you might make your table centerpieces a little smaller to make up the cost. You can also look for lowcost ways to infuse whimsy. For example, using playful wording or fonts on your wedding stationery, or creating signature cocktails that are a nod to your own personalities or interests.

A Disney Fairy Tale Wedding at the Magic Kingdom.

A Place for Everything Planning an unforgettable guest experience starts with location, says Korri McFann of Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings & Honeymoons. She should know. Her staff creates weddings overlooking Cinderella’s castle, in European-style villages, on cruise ships and on beaches. “Your setting is the tone, the mood, the ambience, and it’s the reflection of the two of you,” McFann says. For example, if you’re hosting a reception in a barn, you’ll already have a rustic ambience that will help guests feel at ease two-stepping on the dance floor. Or, you can host your reception somewhere that’s more of a blank canvas. For example, a loft can feel like a swanky nightclub or like a charming French bistro, depending on the type of music, food and decorations you choose for it.

Into the Night

Consider an after-party, either at the same venue or a nearby pub or club. Generally anything goes in the wee hours, but since it’s usually the young adult crowd that sticks around, take note and plan details or activities that will appeal to them.

itinerary with plans. Directions to the venue can include an “I spy” game, where guests spot different landmarks as they drive into town. DOUBLE-DUTY FOODS:

At one recent wedding, edible candles made of beef tallow were aglow. Guests dipped their bread

into them for a tasty and wow-worthy touch. UNCONVENTIONAL TIMELINES: McFann says couples are playing with typical schedules, such as holding the reception until the day after the wedding, so guests can enjoy themselves on their own after the cer-

emony, and then join again the next day for the celebratory event. CASUAL GAMING:

Guests are playing fun outdoor games, like cornhole and other lawn games at receptions. These fresh-air novelties encourage mingling and letting loose.

JUST A THOUGHT: YOU MAY ALSO PROVIDE A DAY-AFTER RECOVERY KIT. COUSINS SAYS THIS GOES OVER WELL IN AREAS WHERE THE ALTITUDE CAN AFFECT HOW PEOPLE FEEL AFTER A NIGHT OF FUN.

Delicious & Delightful

Bridal Bliss Event Design’s raw bar.

“Food is so meaningful, and to share a meal is such a fun part of an event,” says McFann. If you want to add flair to the meal you serve at your wedding reception, you can do it with your food choices—for example, chicken wings inspired by your favorite sports bar’s recipe. You can also offer guests a more interactive experience, such as food trucks or action stations, like a raw bar with oysters that are shucked right there for guests to watch. Or perhaps the food will be served in a way that’s a feast for the eyes, like sushi served on a giant block of ice.

Drink and Make Merry

Artist at work.

If you’re planning a super-elegant fete and don’t want to make it feel less formal, zero in on the cocktail hour, where guests like to let loose. For example, they can play lawn games, like bocce ball or oversized Jenga, checkers or chess before settling down to enjoy a seated, more formal meal. “If you want to have a late-night snack as the reception winds down, take the opportunity to think about how the food will be delivered to guests and make that part of the overall experience,” suggests Turner. For example, for one wedding she planned, it wasn’t just stacks of boxed pizza that were delivered at the end of the reception. Instead, guests were encouraged to stroll over to a patio that had been lavishly decorated to look like an Italian pizzeria, complete with red and white checkered tablecloths, custom pizza boxes with pictures of the couple on them, and an accordion player serenading the crowd. Lawn games by Kirkbrides Event Design

So Entertaining To really wow guests, consider going beyond just music by planning some additional entertainment that fits your fete. Turner frequently books live artists to paint or draw scenes from the wedding, like the first dance or the ceremony, as they’re happening. “We once had a graffiti artist doing live graffiti at the reception,” she adds. “Guests could participate too, spraying paint in different colors, and the couple had a piece of artwork they could take home.” Adds McFann, “Active entertainment is probably the best way to describe it. Something that is not passive, that’s touching on all the senses and/or that guests get to participate in is what we’re seeing today more than in the past”. ➺

ISABELLE VON BOCH

DISHES OUT ADVICE

I

sabelle Von Boch, international spokesperson for her family’s tableware company Villeroy & Boch, is an outspoken advocate for using beautiful things in your home every day. Here, Isabelle answers your most sought out registry questions. Why should we register for china? Whether it’s breakfast for two, a casual get together or a holiday occasion, tableware sets the tone and reflects who you are and what you value. It helps create memories and elevates your dining experience. How can I imprint my own sense of style? Mix and match continues to be a huge trend on the table. Many of Villeroy & Boch’s patterns are designed so they are perfectly compatible. Color palettes and designs all intermingle. Compromise your two styles by choosing a floral design salad plate that you love and set it on a solid or striped dinner plate that appeals to your fiancé.

What mistakes should we avoid when choosing our china? First, don’t register for something you won’t use and that will stay in the cupboard. Second, forget about the five-piece place setting. Think about how you live. What foods do you enjoy cooking and eating? For instance, if you like “one bowl” main course meals, choose a generously sized pasta or dinner bowl. Whatever you decide, the pattern should speak to your heart and inspire you! And third, choose durable pieces that are chip-resistant and dishwasher safe. How do we justify registering for tableware that can be costly? Investing in quality is the best investment you can make. An inexpensive set will last only a short time before it chips and must be replaced. Spend $1,000 on quality tableware. Use it every day for 20 or 30 years, and it’s just pennies a day! Final thoughts Make a point to set the table at least once a day. Turn off your cell phone and take time to reconnect over dinner. It’s important to make room for moments of mindfulness in today’s fast-paced world. Visit villeroy-boch.com/shop/ to see the wide range of Villeroy & Boch tableware.

planning notebook

HOROSCOPE choice, with a judge or mayor officiating. Think quality over quantity when it comes to guests, food and flowers. You might be thinking about a “green” wedding, with vegetarian or vegan options or locally sourced cuisine.

LIBRA September 23-October 22

Your innate sense of elegance is sure to imbue anything you create with refined sophistication. Readings for your ceremony could include the Libra themes of love, cooperation and collaboration. A sit-down dinner or lunch suits your style, as do themes like Valentine’s Day, a garden party or a wine tasting.

Astrologer Karen Christino offers wedding-planning perfection by looking to the stars in her new book. Here, some tips.

ARIES March 21-April 19

You’re a casual, lively person and want your big day to reflect that. Rollicking themes like Fourth of July (with fireworks) or rock ’n’ roll hold appeal. You might enjoy a public garden, a ski resort or a hilly area with a view of the countryside. You love to surround yourself with friends, so find a venue large enough to hold them all.

TAURUS April 20-May 20

You prefer a smaller guest list of close family and friends to a larger group. Your love of nature may prompt you to marry in a botanical garden or park. You wouldn’t mind a formal or traditional wedding, but you’ll want to keep it romantic with personal vows or the reading of a favorite poem.

GEMINI May 21-June 20

Geminis are versatile, but no matter what, your wedding must be lively and fun. Invite all your friends and family and have as many attendants as you can. A casual buffet afternoon or a cocktail reception might suit, but you wouldn’t mind if the celebration extended over an entire weekend.

Think about a backyard tent, a park picnic lunch or a country-club tea party.

CANCER June 21-July 22

Your home is the center of your universe, so why not consider a reception there? Cancer is a water sign, so other choices include venues nears lakes, rivers and brooks—or take over a seaside restaurant for a day. Family is important so you may want to involve them in the ceremony.

LEO July 23- August 22

Plan a fabulous processional and take your time in a grand receiving line. As a natural performer you might want to sing a song, and of course you’ll want to feature the best band or DJ you can find. In keeping with your performative bent, you may be thinking about having your ceremony or reception at a concert hall or theater, in a castle or at the edge of a dramatic forest.

Scorpios tend to be quiet by nature, yet very attentive to the outside world. Nothing misses your scrutiny. You’re drawn to wedding settings such as a vineyard or even a natural history museum; your sophisticated side calls for a country club, or boutique hotel setting. Intrigued by the metaphysical, you might like to feature tarot or palm readings at the reception.

SAGITTARIUS November 22-December 21

Sagittarius is the most good-natured of zodiac signs, with an optimistic outlook. You want to shout your love from the rooftops and do things up in a big way—with as many guests as possible. You could be thinking destination wedding, but other Sag settings include a zoo, baseball field or refurbished barn. And many a Sagittarian has had the urge to just elope to Vegas!

CAPRICORN December 22-January 19

August 23-September 22

You love tradition and can embrace it in many ways. Capricorn settings include a rooftop garden, penthouse, estate, mansion or mountain resort. Your theme may be historic: the Victorian era or motifs from the 1920s or 1950s. Consider a horse-drawn carriage to transport you in style. Take a little time to rehearse your first kiss as man and wife. Love for you is serious business!

Many Virgos prefer a no-frills style. No wonder you may be leaning toward low-key and minimal. A civil service might be your

PROS NATURE-MADE DECOR Let’s face it, who needs lavish decorations when an amber sunset, blooming wildflowers or acres of rolling kelly-green hills can serve as your backdrop? “Outdoor and tent weddings are among my favorite,” says Allison Sargent, of Allison Sargent Events in New Jersey, whose own daughter, Carly, was married in a custom-built tent overlooking two fairways on a golf course. “Everyone loves being outdoors on a glorious day,” she says. A BLANK CANVAS “Tented receptions are fantastic because they are blank canvases,” says Julie Pryor, of Pryor Events in Los Angeles. “You can add dramatic lighting, carpeting, and draping. And clear tents bring the outdoors in.”

CONS UNPREDICTABLE WEATHER “I am a big fan of outdoor events, but you need to be flexible and realize you do not have control of the weather, which has a mind of its own,” says Pryor. “I always have a backup for outdoor events, even in Southern California. This may be an indoor space that an event can be moved into or a gorgeous tent.” TENTS ARE COSTLY While the cost of tents can vary widely, based on size, type and structural design, Marcy Blum of Marcy Blum Events and Weddings in New York City says you should “absolutely” expect to pay more for a tented wedding because you’re shelling out for “not only the tent, but also for the tables, chairs, and other peripherals that are rarely included in site fees.” TEMPERATURE CONTROL “When you host your wedding outdoors you are always vulnerable to weather and change in temperature,” says Colin Cowie, of Colin Cowie Events and Celebrations, in New York and Los Angeles. What to do? “Make sure to shield guests from the sun during the day and provide heaters in the evening,” advises Pryor. Handing out paper fans and parasols can go a long way toward making your guests feel as comfortable as possible. ➺

Getting married at a hotel or resort is a popular choice. The number-one draw? Convenience for you and your guests.

PROS

CONS

EXPERIENCED STAFF “Hotels are accustomed to entertaining and hosting large groups of people,” says Cowie. “Here, you have a full infrastructure and team you can rely on.” RENTALS INCLUDED Because hotels typically provide everything you need to host your wedding, you won’t have to worry about bringing in lots of tables, chairs, linens, dishes, silverware, and stemware. BUILT-IN ACCOMMODATIONS You will often be able to reserve a block of rooms for your out-oftown guests at a discounted rate. And many hotels offer wedding packages that include free honeymoon stays.

LACK OF FLEXIBILITY Depending on the hotel, your ability to rearrange the tables to suit your preferences may be limited. “Some banquet managers can be set in their ways and make it difficult to change things up,” says Blum. HIDDEN COSTS It’s important to find out exactly what’s included in your wedding—and what’s not. “For a hotel wedding, inquire about cake-cutting fees, valet costs, and overtime charges before signing a contract,” advises Pryor. OTHER RESTRICTIONS You may have to use the hotel’s vendors, such as the florist and/or lighting designer.

Restaurant

If exceptional food and service is a top priority for your wedding, consider saying your “I dos” at a fine-dining establishment.

PROS GREAT FOOD Jessica M. held her September wedding reception for 95 guests at a high-end restaurant in Chicago. Jessica calls herself an amateur foodie, so good food and drinks were a must for her wedding. “After touring a few banquet hall and hotel ballroom venues, my husband and I realized we either had to book a restaurant that served the type of food we wanted or a raw space that would allow us to bring in our own caterer. But the cost of turning the raw space into something appealing would have blown our budget.” WELL-TRAINED SERVICE STAFF “Restaurants are in the business of making good food and providing good service,” says Jessica. Regardless, Pryor stresses the importance of booking eateries that are

Destination PROS

CHANGE OF SCENERY “Destination weddings are always beautiful and a favorite of many brides,” says Sargent. “Each far-flung location has its own wonderful attributes.” FEWER GUESTS SAVES MONEY The upside to a smaller guest list is that your catering costs go down significantly. “We went on a three-week-long trip of a lifetime, stayed in the best places, ate wonderful food, and had the wedding of our dreams with only our nearest and dearest,” says New Yorker Beata S., of her wedding in Italy. “We didn’t skimp and still wound up spending less than most people in New York City pay for just the flowers or dresses.” Fewer guests also allows you to focus more atten-

experienced in handling large parties. MINIMAL RENTALS REQUIRED Because restaurants already have tables, chairs, linens and other service items on hand, your rental costs will be much lower for a restaurant wedding than for a banquet wedding.

CONS RESTRICTED SPACE If you want to dance the night away on your big day,

a restaurant might not be right for you. “Restaurants are usually not designed with dancing, grand entrances, live bands or bouquet tossing in mind,” admits Jessica. BUYOUT MAY BE NECESSARY “Restaurants can end up being super expensive if you have to do a buyout,” says Blum. “They will charge what they would have made on à la carte seating.”

Getting married away from home is exciting, glamorous, and a bit unexpected. And no doubt many of your guests will be happy to go along for the ride. tion on those who made the trip. Which leads to… QUALITY TIME WITH GUESTS “What I love most about a destination wedding is that you get to take a smaller group of friends and family away and spend 72 or more quality hours with them in a remote and romantic setting rather than have a single bash in your hometown for 250 people that is all over in five hours,” says Cowie.

CONS GUESTS’ EXPENSES GO UP Airfare alone can be a hefty cost for a wedding guest. Then there are accommodations, car rental fees, a wedding gift, and more. YOU’RE IN TOUR-GUIDE MODE Because

you’re taking guests to unfamiliar territory, it’s essential that you make them feel at ease. “As guests respond that they will be attending, let them know that you cannot wait to celebrate with them,” suggests Pryor. “It is also considerate to plan weekend activities for your guests,” she says. LOCAL CUSTOMS AND RESOURCES With a destination wedding, you will often have to put your trust in vendors located many miles away and with whom you may not be very familiar. “You have to rely on local resources or pay big dollars to ship it all in,” says Cowie. “Getting married in a different country is a challenge because each country has its own set of laws when it comes to marriage,” he says. ➺

“Always check the typical weather for your potential date, so you don’t end up in the middle of a rainy season or heat wave.”—Allison Sargent

At Home

Having your wedding at home (or at a friend or family member’s home) is a great way to capture a sense of warmth and privacy on your big day.

offered their home for our wedding,” Dawn recounts. “It’s like a second home to me and it’s always been filled with tons of love and laughter.” ROOM FOR FLEXIBILITY When getting married at home, you have full rein over things like your wedding date, timeline, and more. Dawn’s ceremony took place in a wooded area of the backyard, which complemented her fall garden-party theme. “The chairs were arranged in a horseshoe, so we could be literally surrounded by our family and friends,” she says. REDUCED LIQUOR BUDGET Buying your own wines, beers and spirits (especially at reduced bulk rates) can be a huge cost saver.

CONS

PROS SENTIMENTAL VALUE “The best part about having your wedding at home is that it is so personal. There’s nothing like getting married under the big sugar maple tree you used to climb as a child,” says Cowie. Dawn P., who got married near Austin, Texas, says she always had her heart set on holding her wedding outdoors and in a setting that had special meaning. “A good friend’s parents

PROS CONVENIENCE OF ONE SITE Sticking with a single venue keeps the logistics simple for everyone involved. Arrive at one place, then relax and enjoy. NO TRANSPORTATION WORRIES Hiring a shuttle, traffic that could delay your party, and guests getting lost on the way from the ceremony to the reception are all nonissues when you have one venue. PRICE IS RIGHT In terms of overall cost, one site means one site fee. “I would rate a one-stop venue as inexpensive to moderately expensive because you are only decorating and putting all of your efforts into one venue,” says Sargent. “As with some of

You can have your ceremony and reception in the same place: a catering hall or a church or synagogue that has an event space.

your other choices, catering costs can vary but typically this is one of the most cost-effective options around.”

CONS DECOR BUDGET GOES UP You have the space. Now you need to work some magic to make it look like what you envisioned your wedding to be. As Blum explains, “One-stop venues are not usually the prettiest locations and may require a lot of decor dollars.” BOUND BY THE RULES The house may want you to stick to a particular setup or have limitations on the use of candles or lighting equipment and sound. Also, says Pryor, “Be sure to check on which vendors can be brought

in. You do not want to be locked into the venue’s referrals.” POTENTIAL “WEDDING FACTORY” FEEL With venues that rely on weddings for their bread and butter, you risk feeling like you’re just one in a long line of brides waiting for their turn to use the space. This is especially true if you happen to bump into another bride getting married in an adjoining room. Talk about buzz kill. Furthermore, says Cowie, “The problem with one-stop venues is most weddings tend to look the same unless you are bringing in big decor elements and have the time to set them up.” So the way to ensure that this is your day is to transform the space as best you can to suit your vision. 

One-Stop Venue

RENTAL COSTS GO UP Although you save money on the venue itself, a wedding for a large group can get expensive simply because of all the rentals you’ll need. “Remember that you will have to bring everything in, from tables and chairs to bars, glasses and even cooking equipment,” says Pryor. VALET PARKING Another important task is to assess the parking situation. Consider arranging for valet parking—and let your neighbors know ahead of time. CLEANUP REQUIRED At the end of the wedding, someone has to do the potentially massive job of cleaning up. This can either be an added expense (hiring a cleaner) or a task bestowed on a few very generous volunteers.

“Our Money Mistakes” Brides reveal their biggest wedding-budget blunders and share their do-over strategies. BY DANIEL P. SMITH

Texas newlywed Ava knows what it’s like to be a budget-balancing bride. “Hands down, wedding expenses are the most stressful part of the planning picture,” Ava says. And stress often sparks mistakes, particularly on the financial front: Costs get overlooked or miscalculated and immediacy shoves aside diligence and patience as the swirl of wedding energy tramples logic, leading to purchases that will later be deemed superfluous. Fortunately, experience remains a wise teacher. So we asked recent brides to share some of their key lessons learned. PLANNING “I tried to plan the wedding from start to finish over the course of four months. The more truncated your planning time is, the more money that goes out in a few short months. I did not have much time between a down payment or deposit and the final payments. Over a more extended period of time, our wedding choices would have been much more affordable, alleviated quite a bit of stress and allowed me to manage the budget much more efficiently.” “I didn’t have a proper budget outline, mostly because I initially envisioned my wedding as a ‘simple’ affair. I had a checklist in my head consisting of my major vendors, dress and honeymoon, and I thought I was set. As the planning progressed, I realized I didn’t have a clear vision of all the singular costs. I should have written out a budget for everything, consulting other brides and wedding checklists to ensure I had everything covered. If I did that from the beginning, there would have been no

surprises, no stressful, last-minute budget conversations with my groom and I could have avoided some extra tears.” —Ava, Spring, TX “I spent a lot of time drawing up a budget for big-ticket items, such as flowers and catering, but I forgot to factor in small items like bar napkins and cups, and those things really added up. I also waited until the last minute to purchase those items, so I was caught off guard when I

realized how much I’d have to spend. As a result, the wedding total came out a lot higher than I anticipated. I wish that I had spent more time thinking through the details and trying to anticipate every possible expense because it’s amazing how much of an impact small dollar purchases can have on your overall budget.” —Kelly, Corpus Christi, TX

—Christina, Lexington, KY

THOSE LITTLE DETAILS

“My biggest mistake was selecting a venue that was too expensive. I only visited five locations, and I fell in love with the last one we saw. In looking at the different venues, I noticed that they were either inexpensive, but I hated the location or decor, or they

were really expensive. Since I knew I’d be devoting a lot of the budget to the venue, }I thought why not spend a little more for the place I love. Looking back, I’m certain I could have found a middle ground, getting a more reasonable price point at a venue I liked, if not loved.” —Katy, Montclair, NJ “When budgeting for bridal apparel, I failed to account for everything. Bridal apparel is more than just the dress and alterations; it’s shoes, a bra, Spanx, jewelry, and so on. I saw numerous wedding checklists that listed ‘bridal attire,’ but never saw something that listed everything in that category. My advice: Research everything and you’ll be happy you did. The wedding industry can be a crazy business and you want to make sure you’re aware of all the different costs up front to avoid being nickel and dimed.” —Lindsey, Wheaton, IL “I did not shop around enough for a photographer. I found one and we liked her work, so we booked right away. Our

“Like a lot of women, I’d never had anything tailored before I bought my wedding dress, so it didn’t occur to me to price out alterations. As I bought my dress from a major retailer, it just made sense to have them alter it, and I scheduled my fitting the same day I ordered the dress. Ultimately, I ended up paying 25 percent of the cost of the dress just to have the hem taken up, as well as a ‘designer dress fee’ because of the brand I’d bought. I let the rush of the moment push me into making a spot decision.” —Lori, Frederick, MD

pictures were beautiful, but after seeing other friends’ wedding photos, I realized we could have paid a few thousand less for the same quality.” —Katie, Joliet, IL

PHOTOGRAPHY: (TOP) ELIZABETH MESSINA PHOTOGRAPHY; (BOTTOM) CORBINGURKIN

BIG PICTURE ITEMS “My single biggest budgeting mistake was the florist. Though my flowers were gorgeous, looking back, I see they were overpriced. I wanted calla lilies and found these beautiful purple ones called Picasso lilies. There was a miscommunication somewhere along the line and I thought we’d be getting a floral arrangement in a small basket for my flower girl. Instead, we

“It is so easy to get caught up in all the details and spend a little extra here, and a little extra there, but all that spending adds up in the end. Looking back, we could have scaled back our budget. Though we loved some of those little details, they did not ultimately make or break our wedding.”—Caitlin, Lowell, MA

got a bag of petals, which we couldn’t even use at the church since it didn’t allow petals to be tossed.”—Melissa, Hanson, MA “We decided to make our invitations ourselves because we thought it would be a fun project that would save us money. Plus, we had a very specific idea of what we wanted our invites to look like and the printing services we looked at didn’t really match our style. At the end of it all, we spent hours coming up with a design, trying it out, failing, coming up with a new design and going back and forth to various stores for supplies. Don’t get me wrong, the invites turned out awesome, but considering the time it took to design, print and assemble our handmade invitations, I would have spent a little more time researching stationery companies and comparing the prices of the printed invites versus all of the materials we bought separately.” —Sarah, Chicago, IL

“While we came in at or under budget on many wedding items, we did not budget enough money for gifts. We wanted to give worthwhile and meaningful gifts to our parents and bridal party, and ended up spending way more than we originally wanted to for good-quality gifts. To avoid this, I would say shop early and shop often. Do not wait until the last minute. Take advantage of big sales and Black Friday deals.” —Kathryn, Columbus, OH ➺

“Favors. We had picture frames for the photo booth, but our photo booth didn’t work for a good chunk of the reception and half of our guests left the frames. Favors weren’t a huge cost when you look at the total, but it was probably unnecessary and I don’t think it made a difference to guests’ enjoyment of the night.” —Anita, Chicago, IL “To show appreciation for guests who took time out of their schedules to travel to our wedding, I spent two solid evenings packaging salt-water taffy into little Tiffany-blue paper boxes that I assembled, complete with a Tiffany-blue ribbon. Many guests left them on the table at the end of the reception and I ended up taking 20 of them home!”—Kristine, Milwaukee, WI

“I ordered linens and charger plates and we could have easily gone without both. The only person that really pays attention to the details when throwing a party is the person who is throwing it. I would have gone with the hotel’s linens and skipped the chargers.” —Cindy, Chicago, IL

ACCOUNTING FOR EXTRAS

“We were on a budget, so we really only saved for the known expenses, and that almost proved disastrous. Since I’m not big on traditions, I didn’t realize it’s polite to invite out-of-town guests to the rehearsal dinner. Quickly, our rehearsal dinner went from 15 to 35 people. Fortunately, a generous couple – completely out of the blue! – saved the day and offered to host the rehearsal dinner as their wedding gift to us. It would have been wise to have extra money set aside since some new expense always comes up.” —Ashley, Alexandria, VA

“Our biggest mistake was that once we got to the finish line, we totally blew off our budget and let a flurry of incremental expenses trickle in. We tripled the amount we budgeted for our rehearsal dinner because we wanted to get the celebration off to a great start. We should have anticipated about 1015 percent in overages because there will always be some unexpected costs or financial decisions you’ll make when emotion, not logic, gets the better of you—which it often does.” —Angie, Lawrence, KS

Six Ways Real Brides Kept Their Budgets in Line

1. START EARLY Kelly, a recently married Texan, recommends researching and writing down every possible expense several months before the wedding date. “That way, you can start clipping coupons and bargain hunting well before your big day.”

3. GAIN PERSPECTIVE THROUGH REFLECTION Illinois bride Brittany determined what was most important to her—photos and food— and focused her budget there. When it came time to decide on other matters, she and her fiancé asked a simple question: “Will we remember this in five years?” 4. LEVERAGE INSIDER KNOWLEDGE Rather than going at it alone, Texas newlywed Cali utilized hotel staff and other

local vendors for recommendations. “They typically know what’s good and often what’s more cost-conscious as well,” she says.

5. DON’T BE AFRAID TO NEGOTIATE Kentucky bride Christina requested that fees such as cake cutting or delivery charges be waived. Illinois bride Cindy, who doubles as an employee of a large hotel chain, adds that many venues and vendors are willing to negotiate when brides pick off-season wedding dates or brunch and lunch events. 6. EMPLOY OTHERS’ TALENTS Ohio bride Laura looked to her artistic brother for help: He snapped her engagement photos and designed the save-the-date cards and invitations before securing some favorable printing costs. ¢

2. DETERMINE WHAT’S IMPORTANT Massachusetts bride Candace urges couples to have open conversations about needs and wants before aligning those details with the budget. “It is imperative to ask yourself what the most important part of your day will be,” she says.

DOLLARS Take control of money matters before tying the knot with this expert advice.

&

SENSE

How is marriage going to affect your finances? We checked in with Terry Jorde, senior executive president and chief of staff at Independent Community Bankers of America.

What should couples consider about their finances before tying the knot?

Before you get married, each of you should prepare a statement of what you own and what you owe and share it with your spouse-to-be to ensure you both understand the financial union you are entering into. Talk about what your expectations are for each other in terms of sharing paychecks, paying on car or student loans, merging bank accounts, paying bills, balancing bank statements, etc. Newlyweds have enough adjustments to make so now is the time to talk and tackle any challenges as a couple.

Q.

A.

What tips can you share for merging bank accounts?

Generally it is easier for one of the partners to be in charge of the account and ideally that person should be the “number cruncher” of the couple. The account should be balanced monthly in order to ensure that all checks, ATM withdrawals, debit card transactions, car payments, etc. are entered into the check register. The current account balance should always be known in order to avoid making charges against insufficient funds. Overdraft fees are not only expensive— they can hurt your credit rating.

Q.

What advice do you have for newlyweds who are creating a budget for married life?

A.

Be realistic. You probably know with some certainty how much you will be earning together and what your

joint monthly obligations are for rent, car payments, and utilities. But chances are you are spending more than you think on such things as eating out, movies, lattes, and other entertainment. Be sure to set clear expectations with each other about your spending and saving habits. Also, try to set aside as much as possible into a joint savings account each month.

Q.

A.

How much should couples try to save every pay period?

It’s not as important what percentage of your income you save as much as it is to develop the habit. I always suggest building an emergency fund first. In today’s volatile economy you never know when one of you may be laid off from a job through no fault of your own. I suggest trying to build a savings of at least three months of living expenses—and six months is better. Once you have an emergency fund, develop a retirement savings regimen. Participate in retirement savings plans including 401(k)s and Roth IRAs. If your employer contributes, that’s better yet. Don’t miss that opportunity to save even more.

Q.

With marriage come more credit cards, and more debt. Any tips?

A.

Confront the situation head on by determining how much you owe, who you owe it to, and the terms of these obligations. Pay down the credit card or loan with the highest interest rate first and

Your biggest money advantage: A married couple is a team working toward common financial goals vs. a party of one. They may also have the advantage of dual incomes. work from there. Try to exceed your minimum payment as much as possible and you’ll be surprised by the progress you’ll make. Your goal should be to eliminate credit card debt and only use credit cards in the future if you can afford to pay the balance in full each month.

Q.

What are some of the financial benefits to being married?

A.

There are obviously tax incentives for being a married couple, but beyond that, I would say the biggest advantage is that married couples are a team working toward common financial goals, versus a party of one. They may also have the advantage of bringing home dual incomes. If one spouse were to become unemployed, the second income could serve as a safety net. If one spouse stays at home, that can have benefits as well. For example, if the couple has children, the money saved on child care could offset working costs. As someone who’s been married for over 30 years I can say there are many benefits to having a partner in life, and in many cases, this is a good thing for your bottom line. 

uring a surprise trip to the coast after a serene day of wine tasting, Terrence got down on one knee and asked Ashley to be his wife. Having traveled Europe together during their first summer of dating, when it finally came time to decide where to have their nuptials the couple knew they wanted to return to where their love story began, aiming for celebrations that were both non-traditional and fashion forward. “We really went for a juxtaposition between super fancy and nonconformity,” said the bride. “Between a raw-nature ceremony, lounge areas for seating and even dancing in the pool at the end of the night, we definitely mixed our love of fashion with a warm, comfortable attitude.” This sentiment was mirrored in the intimate details of the day. The 80 guests in attendance were given a dress code of “Runway Attire,” while vintage decor accents like twinkling lights and candelabras gave the evening a Midsummer Night’s Dream atmosphere, which left everyone feeling warm and celebratory. “There will be a moment during the festivities where you just want to have fun and celebrate marrying the love of your life. That moment came to me while dancing in the pool with my new husband,” said Ashley. “Life felt pretty complete.”— Anna Smutny

String lights and scattered lounge areas gave the reception a warm atmosphere. 4. Invitations of black, white and gold accentuated the fancy-meets-nonconformity vibe the couple aimed for. 3

1. Choosing to forgo traditional table arrangements, vintage furniture was placed around the reception site, allowing guests to mingle freely. 2. Heat-resistant florals such as proteas and wax flowers were mixed in with the bride’s favorite wildflowers for exquisite bouquets and centerpieces. 3. Wishing to offer farm-totable cuisine, the caterer went to the local farmer’s market to craft a menu featuring an abundance of fresh fruits, cheeses and grilled vegetable medleys. 4. Favorite Moments • Ending the night on a spontaneous note, the wedding party leapt into the pool and formed a conga line singing the words to “Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting.” • During the rehearsal dinner in Lugano, Switzerland, both the bride and groom gave tribute to each member of their family and bridal party, thanking them for their support. • After the rehearsal dinner, guests boarded a yacht in all-white attire and watched as a thunderstorm lit up the sky.

hat started off as a stroll through their home’s chestnut orchards quickly turned into something much more romantic when Simon got down on one knee in front of handmade signs to propose to his bride-to-be, Natasha. The future Mr. and Mrs. then began the hunt for the ideal venue and stumbled onto Projekt 3488, a stunning refurbished Masonic Hall nestled amongst the mountains of Warburton, Australia. “The gardens took our breath away,” says Natasha. “And the venue was restored in an exquisite way that allowed the building to shine in all its charm.” Wanting to keep things simple and welcoming, the couple let the venue’s rustic ambience speak for itself, allowing the evening’s vibe to be created by the people involved. Enhanced with a jeweltoned color palette of burgundy, navy, eucalyptus green and grey, the ceremony and reception sites were decorated with festive floral arrangements and twinkling lights. Keeping with the relaxed feeling, as the 86 guests mingled they were served a variety of finger foods and eventually sat down at long farm-style tables for the main course. After a day of friends, family and love, Natasha noted that, “It was a declaration of love built on honesty, faithfulness and respect.”—Anna Smutny

Personal Touches • The bride and groom crafted their own wedding bands while taking a jewelry-forging course together, using strands of white gold and silver. • A close friend of the bride hand-sewed her veil using lace, tulle and invisible thread to create a one-of-a-kind piece. 000 BRIDALGUIDE.COM May/June 2018

Reasons to Shop at Your Local Bridal Salon

The YES Moment

You,ve probably been dreaming of this day for a long time—with good reason! There is no greater feeling than trying on a wedding gown and seeing yourself as a bride for the very first time. Surrounded by friends and loved ones makes the YES moment that much sweeter! Selection

Make the Dress Your Own

Bridal salons offer the largest selection of reputable designers, styles, and colors.Your consultant will work directly with the designer to ensure everything from the color, to the fabric and the fit, are exactly what you envision.

The dress you try on in the store is just a starting point. Want to add a sleeve? Lower the back? Elongate the train? At a traditional bridal salon, you can work with a seamstress to customize your gown and turn your dream into a reality.

Feel-Good Factor

Special Pricing

When you buy from a trusted, local bridal salon, you not only support your community, but also small businesses mostly owned by women!

No Surprises You get what you pay for. A designer dress may be pricier than similar versions online, but counterfeit gowns can be poorly constructed, ill-fitting, and made out of cheap fabrics, if you receive your gown at all.

If budget is a concern, there are many ways to shop smart at a local salon. Many brick-and-mortar stores offer discounts at designer trunk shows, and host sample sales annually.

So Much More Than Just the Gown Your trained consultant will take precise measurements, assist with alterations, and put you at ease throughout the entire process. The salon will even steam your gown and store it safely until your wedding day!

ife imitated art when actors and former “Revenge” co-stars Emily VanCamp and Josh Bowman said “I do” in an adorable pink-hued church on the delightfully secluded and equally rosy Harbour Island, an Out Island of the Bahamian chain. The couple, who celebrated a marriage to each other in the series, hosted friends and family on the fantasy island before staying for a few days to enjoy a minimoon. Famous for its pink-sand beaches, this tiny paradise (it’s just 3.5 miles long and a half-mile wide) is An inviting room. home to a handful of classic Bahamian resorts including the picturesque Bahama House. A collection of just 11 guest rooms, all decorated in the soft marquee colors of the island and showcasing original art by locals, is ensconced in an 1800s property composed of a main house, the Annex, and two chic cottages positioned around a pretty pool. Also included are a rum bar, which features house-made spirits, a torch-lit tiki bar and an intimate dining room that serves legendary breakfasts. The hotel is conveniently located in town, and guests have access to golf carts to explore the island. Beach furniture set-ups along with castaway picnics and loads of only-in-the-Caribbean excursion options (think bone fishing and swimming with the pigs off neighboring Eleuthera) fill out the amazing offerings. In Texas Hill Country, where the rolling landscape blossoms with the famed bluebonnet flowers and is punctuated by photogenic wineries and old-school horse farms, this sprawling ranch welcomes visitors with the promise of excellent equine programming, seamless service and stellar cuisine. Much of the food on this 313-acres resort is sourced on-site from the organic gardens and greenhouses. Guest experiences include gardening classes and tours with the house farmer, Steve, who has a Ph.D. in plant breeding. And there are cooking classes that feature harvesting ingredients before preparing them in a sparkling kitchen (room rates start at $490 a night; dosbrisas.com).

On the outskirts of one, sits this 16-room property. The namesake and featured site is an impressive grist mill, believed to more than 500 years old. Take a two-day bread-making course and you’ll utilize the flours of the mill to handcraft goodies. There are also visits to villages and a tasting menu highlighting the best local ingredients (room rates for the two-night package start at about $460 per person and include accommodations, two meals and two excursions; molinodealcuneza.com).

Jet lag, fevers, sunburn make happily-everafter not so fun. Here’s how to stop travel sickness before it begins. by Jenna Mahoney

o one likes being ill—especially on vacation—but feeling under the weather on your honeymoon may as well be a premise for a horror movie. Add a scene in a foreign hospital and, well, you’re pretty much guaranteed night terrors. Here are some ways to stay in good health.

BE PREPARED

resort gyms have endless class menus, where you can try Pilates, kickboxing or a personal training session with your new husband.

SAFETY FIRST I’ve been on a snorkeling trip in Hawaii with someone who didn’t know how to swim and on a trek in the Andes with a fellow with a heart condition. These two ruined it for all. Yes, your honeymoon is an awesome time to have totally new experiences, but always recognize your limits. If you’ve got the cardio capacity of a bulldog, skip the intense jungle mountain biking excursion and opt for a more leisurely canopy walk instead. Also, don’t be afraid to sit things out. Once in Thailand my intense fear of heights prevented me from trekking up a precarious flight of stairs to a mountaintop lake. Was I a bit bummed? Sure. But while I was waiting for my friends, I enjoyed some fresh coconut water and got a tip from a local about a super-secret beach on a neighboring island. After my suggestion we checked out the pristine cove—we were the only people there and the scenery was right out of a screensaver. 

A prep step on the front end of your trip can ensure smooth sailing. Before you even book your honeymoon, research any inoculations or medical information on the CDC website. If you are traveling to a country with confirmed Zika cases, be sure to pack strong mosquito repellent and lightweight long-sleeved shirts and pants. If your resort or hotel doesn’t have air conditioning or has open-air rooms, make sure they provide screens and mosquito netting over the bed. Love is brewing at Hotel Emma.

San Antonio

In every issue, we scout a spot that’s perfect for tying the knot away from home. by Becca Hensley

ith a river scene that runs through it, 300-year old missions, a hip, retrofitted neighborhood built up around an historic brewery, bike paths galore, mariachis, a fete day that peppers the city with colorful paper flowers, and a base culture that blends cowboy rancher swagger with Mexican settler panache, San Antonio’s as rich with flavor as its famous plate of cheesy Tex Mex enchiladas. Couples marrying in the Alamo City find a great state of options for getting hitched.

Beer buffs keen for edgy design can walk down an aisle lined with vintage brewing tanks and ancient bottle-filling machines in the Elephant Cellar Ballroom at this award-winning hotel, set in the Pearl District. Ensconced in the abandoned Pearl Brewery, Hotel Emma emits a sophisticated industrial ambience, thanks to its repurposed design features, from tin ceilings to custom chandeliers to brewery paraphernalia aplenty. Western swank, such as leathers and rich fabrics, hint at heyday elegance. Use the ballroom, which holds 200 guests, for big weddings to exchange vows, then employ the courtyard and Exhibition Kitchen for reception appetizers or dessert stations (site fees start at $6,000. Food minimums are $220 per person; thehotelemma.com).

LA CANTERA RESORT & SPA Combine that Texan love for ranches with some city-slicker chic at La Cantera Resort & Spa, which crowns San Antonio’s highest point. Occupying 500 acres with views of both the cityscape and the adjacent vineyard-peppered Texas Hill Country, the resort takes design influences from the famed King Ranch, located ➺

further south. Fireplaces, limestone arches, vast lawns, villas, spacious suites, multiple restaurants, five swimming pools and the 25,000 square-foot Loma de Vida Spa make this resort perfect for large weddings with lots of out-of-town guests. Offering 14 venues, ranging from lawns to ballrooms to cozy nooks, La Cantera’s wedding packages come with a team of specialists to assist in your Big Day prep (site fees start at $1,000. Food minimums are $110 per person; lacanteraresort.com).

McNAY ART MUSEUM Oil heiress, artist and collector Marion Koogler McNay built her 26-room Spanish Colonial mansion, set on 23 acres, in 1930 to house her massive, eclectic art collection. Bequeathed to a foundation in 1950, the ever-growing trove became Texas’s first modern art museum, just minutes from downtown. Art-centric couples today can marry (and hold receptions) among works by artists as diverse as Hopper, Dufy, Matisse and de Kooning in the Main Collection galleries or beneath the trees in the leafy, nostalgic garden. Up to 300 can gather in the Leeper Auditorium, a 3,400-square-foot space with hardwood floors capped by vaulted ceilings (site fees start at $3,000; mcnayartcom).

Lovers who don’t mind the curious eyes of uninvited bystanders in passing barges can tie the knot in the midst of San Antonio’s number-one tourist attraction—the River Walk. Continue a tradition said to date back to the Mexican Revolution on Marriage Island, a spit of Eden-like peninsula measuring 25 by 15 feet, accessible to shore by a footbridge. Long said to bring good luck to couples, the city-owned venue holds only enough space for 25 guests. However, its location adjacent to the tony Hotel Contessa ensures viewing spots on the hotel’s property for those holding their reception within its patio or ballroom. Local wedding-planning company The Ministry at San Antonio specializes in River Walk weddings and offers packages, including permitting and scheduling, an officiant, musicians, photographers and more (site fees are $200 for 30 minutes. Wedding packages start at $430; marriageisland.com). ¢

Marriage licenses are required in the state of Texas and are available at any County Clerk office. All couples must apply in person with proof of age and identity, birthplace (city, county and state) and social security number. Divorce decrees must be longer than 30 days from the date of marriage. There is a 72-hour waiting period, and licenses are valid for 90 days. Application fees vary per county, but may be waived if the couple participates in a marriage course.

The epic expanse of Patagonia.

Exploring Chile’s part of Patagonia is peak travel for nature nerds and not just because of its famous snaggletooth mountaintops. Whipped by wind, unsullied by development and abundant with animals, it’s a remote and ruggedly romantic land full of lakes, fjords, ice fields and volcanoes. Before you head into the wild, take two days to conquer jet lag and soak up big-city bustle in the capital of Santiago’s urban parks, historic plazas and lively artsy neighborhoods. — by Carrie Bell Insta-perfect at The Singular Patagonia.

Descendants of original settlers to the Fjord of Last Hope took a rundown 1915 cold-storage plant that once processed frozen sheep meat and rejiggered it into the area’s finest and most architecturally significant accommodations with vintage brick walls, picture windows, an indoor-outdoor pool, an attic event space and a funicular that delivers guests to the reception. And vintage pieces abound—Victorian machinery fills public spaces, old photos decorate room walls and tours of the hotel and the town highlight heritage (rooms start at $445 a night; thesingular.com).

NORTH STAR Bursting with bucolic splendor and wildlife, Patagonia’s centerpiece, Torres del Paine National Park, is an outdoorsy traveler’s daydream destination packed with fishing and kayaking, spring super blooms and horseback riding, starry night skies and picnic spots where you can watch condors fly overhead without putting down your sandwich. PINNEY’S BEACH, NEVIS Named “Oualie” or “Land of Beautiful Waters” by the native Caribs, the island of Nevis features gentle waters that melt into some of the most superlative alabaster-colored beaches on the planet. But one particular beach on the island’s western edge defies the bleached landscape seen on the rest of the island. Soft

ribbons of saffron-colored sand give Pinney’s Beach an orangey-peach tint. And at close to four miles, Pinney’s is not only the island’s longest, it’s also one of its most popular with locals and visitors. WHERE TO STAY: The Four Seasons Resort Nevis, set on the famous Pinney’s Beach also has luxury rooms that look onto the island’s lush, tropical hill called Nevis Peak. The resort’s golf

course is a marquee amenity—it features the ruins of an old sugar mill—as are watersports—kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, Hobie sailboats and snorkeling gear are all available. Off-property and guided snorkeling excursions are a fun way to explore the rest of the island. At night, take in the beauty of the beach with a private dinner in the sand (room rates start at $425 a night; fourseasons.com).

waying palms, temperate tropical breezes and an endless array of beaches—this is the Caribbean, a paradise-on-earth region that teems with fantasy islands and is constantly at the top of the romantic travelers’ daydream-destination list. And while all the strands of sands are sun-kissed and photogenic, not all are equal in appearance. For the region is proudly home to a kaleidoscope of beaches—from blush pink and powder white to shimmering gold and volcanic black. Here are some of our favorite spots for enjoying a bit of color therapy while making a big splash on your honeymoon.

Four Seasons Resort Nevis sits on peachy Pinney’s Beach.

BLACK POINT BEACH, ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES Gritty and gorgeous, black sand beaches are a moody backdrop for any tropical getaway. Such rare strands are formed when volcanic rock and lava formations erode over centuries. This archipelago nation in the Southern Caribbean is home to some of these hard-to-discover stunners. On the main island, St. Vincent, you’ll find the quiet Black Point Beach. A visit here is not only a chance to enjoy one of nature’s most splendid creations, it’s also an opportunity to learn about often overlooked portions of Caribbean history. Used as a location for the filming of “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” Black Point Heritage Park is also home to Jasper Rock Tunnel. Constructed by British slaves

around 1815, the tunnel allowed access for slaves to move sugar from the nearby plantations to the wharf for exportation. WHERE TO STAY: The private island Petit St. Vincent is at the southernmost portion of the Grenadines. Surrounded entirely by the whitest of sand beaches, you’re sure to marvel at the stark color contrast of going from this private resort to Black Point Beach (room rates start at $1,260 a night and are all inclusive; petitstvincent.com)

PINK SAND BEACH, BARBUDA Barbuda, the smaller of the two islands that comprise the nation of Antigua and Barbuda, was once home to fewer than 2,000 residents. Following the devastation of 2017’s Hurricane Irma, where nearly the entirety of the island was

destroyed, the bulk of the population relocated to their neighbor island. Today, however, Barbuda is open for business and welcoming visitors who want to appreciate the island’s rich natural offerings and help the locals get back on their feet. The restored restaurants, bars and beaches are at the same time humming and uncrowded. Catch a ferry from Antigua to visit Barbuda’s aptly named and off-the-beaten-path Low Bay. Colloquially called Pink Sand Beach, the isolated eight-mile strand is a delightful salmon hue thanks to a blend of crushed coral and white sand. WHERE TO STAY: Royalton Antigua Resort & Spa showcases Antigua’s only overwater bungalows. The thatched-roof villas feature extra-large master bedrooms, oversize living spaces and enormous decks outfitted with personal ➺

infinity pools, overwater hammocks and uninterrupted views of the sparkling Caribbean Sea. Each of the chic hideaways comes equipped with personalized butler service. Located in Deep Bay, it’s a short taxi ride from the hotel to St. John’s dock where you can hop on the ferry to Barbuda and its Pink Beach (room rates start at $450 a night and are all inclusive; royaltonresorts.com).

SHELL BEACH, ST. BARTHS Officially known as Saint Barthélemy, this cosmopolitan, French-speaking island is about 9.5 square miles. On this tony escape that’s wildly popular with boldfaced names, ivory sands prevail with one exception: Shell Beach is an impressive collection of millions of seashells, mostly in pinks and purples, settled on an intimate cove. Chairs and loungers

are available to rent, and there’s a beach bar that serves up frothy tropical libations that perfectly coordinate with the cotton-candy landscape. WHERE TO STAY: Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa, positioned within the Nature Reserve of St. Barths, is not only pet-friendly, it’s also dedicated to conservation of the island’s resources. And guests can participate in some conservation efforts that help the native fauna (sea turtles, starfish) and landscapes (coral reefs). The pretty property is the definition of beach chic and boasts an

array of perches for lounging. It’s also surrounded by pearly-colored sands, and located about a 15-minute taxi ride to Shell Beach (room rates start at $650 a night and include breakfast; lebarthelemyhotel.com).

ANSE CHASTANET BEACH, ST. LUCIA Grey is considered one of the few hues that is not actually a “color.” It’s a neutral blend of other non-colors, black and white. Yet when grey is seen in color palettes, it represents modern elegance

and sophistication. The island of St. Lucia is known for its iconic green-carpeted twin peaks called the Pitons and the beaches that sit under their watch. With a mix of volcanic black and the Caribbean standard white sand, Anse Chastanet Beach reveals itself as a pale grey. Snorkelers delight in the waters and easy-to-spot tropical fish swimming close by, while sunners (and let’s admit it selfie-takers), enjoy lounging in the silvery sands with a backdrop of the formidable verdant St. Lucian mountains. The sulphur springs are another marquee attraction on the island. The healing waters of the world’s only drive-in volcano is a popular day-trip, so be sure to arrive early to beat the crowds. WHERE TO STAY: St. Lucia’s Anse Chastanet Resort is a truly special ecoresort showcasing 49 individually appointed guest rooms with open-air “walls”

Sail from Los Angeles to Papeete, Tahiti and spend six days relaxing at sea before island-hopping in the Marquesas and Society Islands of French Polynesia (including must-see Bora Bora). Or opt to cruise from Papeete to Auckland, New Zealand and visit five island nations: French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand. While you’ll be seduced by these South Seas ports, the vibe onboard 980-passenger Crystal Serenity is downright indulgent. The ship features world-class dining experiences in the Waterside dining room, Umi Uma & Sushi Bar (with menus by Nobu Matsuhisa), Prego (for modern Italian) and five other restaurants. The Crystal Cove bar specializes in the classic cocktail and all kinds of tasty variations, and atmospheric Avenue Saloon has an impressive Old Fashioned menu (veranda staterooms start $5,399 and $6,349 per person for the 14-day sailing; crystalcruises.com).

Alaskan Adventure on Norwegian Joy Imagine hiking on glaciers and kayaking within sight of orcas and humpback whales or challenging each other behind the wheel on a two-level racetrack surrounded by the sea or teaming up to defeat your fellow cruisers in a futuristic laser-tag labyrinth. All this and much more can be your daydream realized when you set sail on the seven-night Inside Passage sailings

aboard 3,802-passenger Norwegian Joy, which following a $50 million refurbishment recently joined sister ship Norwegian Bliss on round-trip Alaska itineraries from Seattle. Splurge on a balcony stateroom to truly appreciate Alaska’s scenic beauty from the moment you wake up until the summer sun in Alaska sets almost 18 hours later. Book adventure-filled shore excursions—backcountry canoeing or snorkeling in Ketchikan; ziplining, dogsledding or whale watching in Juneau; hikes and river floats in Skagway—and be charmed by the gardens of British Columbia’s capital, Victoria. Onboard, book a table for two at more than a dozen restaurants (from seafood and steak to Peruvian-Asian and southern barbecue), sip your favorite cocktail at 17 bars and lounges (specializing in beer, wine, whiskey and martinis and more), and soak in your favorite hot tub (we like the one on deck 18) before dancing in your seats to the sounds of a Beatles cover band in The Cavern nightclub or the debut of “Footloose” at sea (balcony cabin rates start at $1,349 per person for the seven-night sailing; ncl.com).

Baltic Sampler on Nieuw Statendam The understated cool of Copenhagen, the seaside beauty of Stockholm, the imperial grandeur of St. Petersburg, the medieval charm of Tallinn, and a whole lot more await colder-water explorers and history buffs on the 14-day Jewels of the Baltic itinerary aboard Holland America’s newest ship Nieuw Statendam. This two-week deep dive into Northern Europe (sailing round trip from Amsterdam) will leave you gaga for Danish

Better still, when the sun sets this 2,666-passenger ship turns up the volume with four fun music venues—Billboard Onboard, Lincoln Center Stage, B.B. King’s Blues Club and Rolling Stone Rock Room. Hours of entertainment by talented musicians set this ship apart from its competitors. You’ll enjoy sleek decor (accented by a captivating modern art collection) and delicious dining (Tamarind’s Pan-Asian menu is a delight and a table for two at French bistro Rudi’s Sel de Terre is a romantic must). To appreciate the long hours of daylight at northern latitudes, book a forward or aft balcony stateroom on deck 4—they’re outfitted with extra-large balconies (veranda staterooms start at $3,299 per person for the 14-day sailing; hollandamerica.com).

Caribbean Sun-Seeking on Carnival Horizon Soak up the sunshine in the Caribbean on a dreamy island-heavy itinerary on a six-night round-trip Western Caribbean cruise from Miami aboard the 3,960-passenger Carnival Horizon. Carnival’s newest vessel lives up to the line’s “fun ship” reputation with a lively pool scene and pulsing nightlife, but it also delivers sexy seclusion, especially if you book a Havana Cabana or Havana balcony stateroom; both offer access to the exclusive Havana Pool. The ship’s food scene will also satisfy your hunger for variety. There are burgers and fries at Guy’s Burger Joint from Food Network star Guy Fieri, spicy tacos at Blue Iguana Cantina and a favorite standout, the fresh-from-the sea delights showcased at the open-air Seafood Shack. Carnival Horizon calls on adventure-filled ports incliding Montego Bay, Jamaica, where you can climb cascading Dunn’s River Falls or combine ziplining and river tubing; Georgetown, Grand Cayman, where a popular excursion is snorkeling with the wild but friendly residents of Stingray City; and Cozumel, where the diving is superb. Back onboard, head to the Havana Bar for a pre-dinner mojito and live music, or the main theater for spellbinding Playlist Productions and epic Lip Sync Battles (Havana stateroom rates start at $699 per person for the six-night sailing; carnival.com).

Cruise al fresco with Celebrity.
