Dress Shopping in CONGRATS, YOU’RE ENGAGED! You’ve probably been dreaming of this day for a long time—with good reason! There’s no greater feeling than trying on a wedding gown and seeing yourself as a bride for the very first time. While wedding gown shopping in 2021 may look a little different, the experience can still feel just as special as it would have pre-pandemic. Read on for some tips!

COVID-19 Safety

Expect to see hand sanitizer everywhere, bring fewer people to your appointment, and wear a mask! Masks will be worn by all staff in the bridal salon, and are mandatory for all brides and guests.

You Can Still Include Friends and Family While brides are limited in the number of guests they can bring with them to their appointments, friends and family can still help you choose “the one.” Bridal consultants are often happy to take photos and set up Zoom appointments so loved ones can come along for the fun.

Communicate with Your Consultant Masks quite literally mask your expressions. A bridal consultant

cannot read your mind, so be vocal about your opinions and tell her if you love a dress or not. You’ll be making both of your jobs easier!

Ask About Delivery Dates If possible, leave plenty of time to shop, and be prepared to say “YES!” if you find a gown you love. Don’t forget to ask your consultant about delivery dates. Due to the pandemic, gowns may have longer turnaround times.

Keep an Open Mind With wedding restrictions changing so frequently, brides may find themselves needing a wedding dress ASAP. Many bridal salons have off-the-rack sections where you can select a gorgeous gown and bring it home the same day.

ANSWERS

Q&A

Wedding

Straight talk, smart solutions by Mary Clarke, Editor in Chief

Q

I’m getting married at the end of January and am concerned that with all the holiday activities beforehand our invitations will get lost in the shuffle, and people will neglect to respond. How can I make sure this doesn’t happen?

A

Get your invites out early! No one has ever complained about receiving wedding invitations too soon—in fact, it’s really a courtesy, since it gives guests more time to plan. I’d make sure your invitations are in mailboxes by December 1 and give an R.S.V.P. deadline of just after the first of the year and at least two weeks before your wedding date. This way, if you do have to make follow-up calls and send emails, you’ll have the time to do so. If yours is a destination wedding, send out save-the-date notices six months before the wedding and invitations four months before the big day. WORKPLACE INVITES

Q

We don’t have enough in our budget to include all of my coworkers but I’d like to invite some of them. How can I do this without offending anyone?

A

Where to begin? With your boss. As a courtesy, you should definitely include your immediate supervisor and your assistant if you have one. If you’ve been working (in person or virtually) with a regular crowd and feel close to them then you pretty much have to go the all-or-nothing route to avoid hurt feelings. If you have a groups of people reporting to you (say you’re head of a department), you have two options: Invite all of them, or just the most senior members of the group.

MENU MATTERS

Q

My son’s fiancé is vegan and wants to have an all-vegan menu at their wedding. Is this a good idea?

A

Not everyone is a strict vegan, so a better option would be to offer a varied menu that include vegan dishes—the couple can even have a delectable vegan cake. They should also place an insert in the wedding invitation asking guests if they have any special dietary requirements (gluten-free, kosher) and then ask their caterer to prepare appropriate dishes if need be. THANK-YOU TIP

Q

A friend suggested we send preprinted thank-you notes (along with a wedding photo) to ease the task of responding to all the gifts. Is this appropriate?

A

Only a handwritten personal message from you and your new spouse will do. Send out your thank-you notes within three months of the wedding and be sure to include a reference to the specific gift. If you receive any gifts before the big day send your thankyou notes out immediately to avoid a backlog. And while a photo is a nice memento, it’s not necessary to include one. BRIDAL PARTY TOO BIG?

Q

How many attendants are considered too many? I have tons of friends and can’t make up my mind about who to include.

A

You can have a few as one (maid or matron of honor) or as many as 12.

But just know that a large number of attendants usually means more money spent (thank-you gifts, bouquets) and more planning stress. Coordinating the schedules and attire for a big group is challenging, which is why most wedding parties average four to six bridesmaids. Although it’s hard to narrow down your choices keep in mind that you can also give honored roles to friends that won’t be attendants. Ask them to do a reading, recite a special prayer or blessing and, if they’re musically talented, sing a song or play an instrument during the ceremony. DANCE DILEMMA

Q

At my daughter’s wedding, am I expected to dance with my ex-husband after the father/daughter and mother/son dances? I’ve remarried and would not want my current husband to feel slighted.

A

It’s considerate of you to ask. No, you’re not expected to dance with your ex-husband. When the parents are called to the dance floor, your partner can be your new husband and your ex can dance with his date or wife (if he’s remarried as well). ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. FITNESS & HEALTH

TRAINING DAY Top fitness pro Greg Doyle shares his best aisle-worthy shape-up strategies. “I have so much fun working out with brides,” says Greg Doyle, who's trained clients in New York City, online, and in his book, Fit for a Bride. “Brides-to-be have so much motivation, along with a set deadline, which can actually make the process easier.” Here, he gives us some key highlights from his fitness and nutrition program. • SET A TIMELINE. Give yourself 2 months to lose 10 pounds; 3-4 months to lose 20; and 6 months if your aim is to lose more than 30. These timelines allow you to lose weight in a healthy way. • YOU NEED BOTH EXERCISE AND PROPER NUTRITION. When you eat less and don’t exercise, your metabolism drops after about three days of lower caloric intake. This means you stop losing weight, and now you’re just hungry. Adding exercise to the mix helps to prevent that disastrous metabolic slowdown. • RETHINK YOUR FOOD CHOICES. On the flip side, I’ve had brides tell me they’ve been working out every day and still not losing any weight. I’ll take a look at what they’re eating and it’s just garbage. You can’t outwork a poor diet. Success comes with the combination of eating the right slimming foods, along with full-body, calorie-crushing workouts.

GREG’S KEY WORKOUT RULES • RESISTANCE GETS YOU LEANER, NOT BULKIER. Whether using body weight or actual weights, resistance work will help boost your metabolism and keep you burning calories hours after you leave the gym. • KETTLEBELLS ARE AWESOME. Working with kettlebells not only improves your postural muscles, it strengthens and tones you from head to toe. Make sure to get proper instruction beforehand, since correct kettlebell technique is key to safety and efficacy. • IT'S OK TO DO SHORTER WORKOUTS. If you dread the gym, keep your sessions short—you'll still reap benefits. Set your phone timer for 30-45 minutes, and once it's up, you are finished. This will keep you motivated to get in and out quickly. • KEEP IT SIMPLE. You don’t need a gym membership to get in amazing shape. Working out using an $8 jump rope can burn more calories than running on a $3,000 elliptical machine. • WORK OUT FROM HEAD TO TOE. While hitting target areas is important for a bride-to-be, your main workouts should focus on full-body moves such as squats and overhead presses, kettlebell swings and burpees. These moves engage so many muscles at the same time that you’ll burn many more calories, and actually help to boost your metabolism.

• LOAD UP ON VEGGIES AND LEANday. A 130-pound woman should drink your body responds well to carbs and PROTEIN. Q&A

DEAR DAVID

You asked, he answered! Celebrations expert David Tutera shares his wedding wisdom.

Q.

We’re planning an outdoor reception but also want to take advantage of the gorgeous sky view our venue provides from the inside looking out. What would you suggest we do?—Kristin

A.

If you’re having an outdoor reception, but want to still utilize the inside of your venue, try kicking the evening off indoors for cocktail hour and then bring the party outside for the reception and a night of dancing under the stars. For outdoor events, always have a rain plan. Discuss your options with your venue or have a tent rental on hold just in case.

Q. A.

What is the number-one thing to splurge on for the wedding reception?—Ginny

Entertainment would have to be the number-one splurge in my book. I always say that music is the heartbeat to any celebration or event and really sets the tone from beginning to end.

Q. A.

What color dress should I wear for my second marriage?—Ann

DON’T FEEL PRESSURED TO MATCH YOUR WEDDING COLORS TO A SEASON. PASTELS ARE ALWAYS POPULAR, AND WOULD BEAUTIFULLY COMPLEMENT A FALL WEDDING.

You may wear any color your heart desires, whether it is your first, second or third marriage! There is no rule stating that a bride getting married a second time around can’t wear white, just like a bride getting married for the first time can wear a blush gown. Bridal fashion has become so trend-forward and out-of-the-box in recent years, breaking free of old-fashioned myths and traditions. My advice? Wear whatever color brings out your personality and makes you feel beautiful.

Q.

I’m getting married this fall, but am not a big fan of traditional autumn colors. I love bright, summery hues and pastels and had always envisioned this scheme for my wedding. What are your thoughts?—Liza

PHOTOGRAPHY: MEL BARLOW & CO.

A.

You absolutely do not have to align your wedding colors with the season. Pastel color schemes in particular have become popular all year-round and would beautifully complement a fall wedding. Do however, take note of which flowers are in season and go from there to help save on costs, as blooms that are not in season may be more expensive. When it comes to your bridesmaid gowns, brights or pastels are fine, but do opt for a seasonally appropriate style in a heavier fabric like silk or taffeta as opposed to chiffon or organza.

Q. A.

I know you like mixing tall and low centerpieces. How many variations should you have?—Rosa

Mixing high and low centerpieces brings extra dimension and visual appeal to the event space. I typically stick with two to three designs. If you do a third, consider a centerpiece that blends aspects of the other two designs. You can take the same approach with candles, using varying sizes to create a more

intimate design. If you’re mixing round and long tables, opt for highs and lows on the rounds and a lush runner of florals or votive candles on the longs.

Q. A.

What are your thoughts on whether the bride and groom should be present during cocktail hour vs. remaining behind the scenes in their bridal suite?—Maria There is no right or wrong here, it’s a matter of preference. When choosing what is best for you and your groom, consider how each situation unfolds. If you prefer to be in the action and like the idea of mingling with your guests during t he cocktail hour, keep in mind you may not be able to partake in much food or drink, as you will be kept busy greeting guests and constantly on the move. Taking some quiet time to yourselves in the bridal suite can be a nice way to take a breather, rest your feet and eat something after the first half of the long day. Consider it like a “half-time” before going back out to celebrate and dance the night away with your guests!

Q. A.

Can you recommend some unique thank-you gift ideas for bridesmaids and groomsmen?—Heather

Try gifting your maids with an experience, like a “mani and mimosas” get-together. You can present it to them with a fun nail polish (like Essie’s “Bachelorette Bash” or “Handmade of Honor”) attached to a little thank-you note stating that you’ll be treating them to a fabulous manicure before the big day (don’t forget the champagne!) Consider big-day accessories for your groomsmen—dress socks, pocket squares, cufflinks—stylish items they can use for future festivities. Take it a step further and customize with monograms or meaningful logos. Your friends will appreciate the thought you put into these creative gift ideas. 

Founded in 2010 by event planner Michelle Cousins, Michelle Leo Events is renowned for creating elegant, romantic and timeless looks with a premium on personalization. Says owner Michelle, “Out here in the Rockies, we can design a black-tie event that’s fit for a lodge in the mountains instead of an urban hotel ballroom, and still achieve the design goal of something formal with a classic, timeless flair.” After postponing over 45 weddings from 2020 to 2021, the nimble company has been summoning up its creative energy to fit two years’ worth of events into its jam-packed 2021 schedule.

Why I love weddings

“I used to do corporate event planning, and I really love the way designing and planning weddings has given me a larger creative outlet. There’s more emotion involved,” says Michelle. She also loves “being able to get creative with fun details like paper suites, floral decor, lighting design, lounge furniture and a personalized guest experience.” Along with her stellar team, “We love that no two events are ever the same, and we really enjoy getting to meet and work with people from all around the globe.”

It’s amazing to see a couple truly get to enjoy quality time with every single person in the room.” • “Not only was there an intimacy to these micro events, the planning process was really enjoyable because these couples didn’t spend time or energy sweating the small stuff. It has been refreshing to work with couples who were just so happy to have a wedding.” • “With micro weddings or minimonies, smaller guest counts meant that couples were willing to splurge on more expensive luxury linens and the florals they truly wanted, without having to worry so much about cost.”

Planning in a post-pandemic world

• “We have always had the sort of infrastructure that allows us to do business at any time from any location. Most of our clients are destination couples and we regularly don’t have the option to take advantage of in-person meetings. Even COVID-19 didn’t really impact or change the way we do, and will continue to do, business.”

What counts now

• “Customization and personalization! These themes will always translate and become a true reflection of the couple no matter the size of the event.” • “Focusing on what truly matters will be at the heart of our main approach going forward. The rest is simply details. And while details are fun and matter to some extent, that’s not what the celebration should be about.” • “I see guest lists, selectivity and overall guest experience taking a front seat to things like linens and tabletop rentals. As a designer, that pains me to admit, but at the end of the day we have to be honest about what matters.”

I’m excited about

• “The return to a point in the planning and execution process where everyone can take a breath and not worry about tables being 6 feet apart or whether or not a venue’s space has a max capacity.” • “Guests feeling comfortable being in a room together, laughing, dancing, dining, and making memories.” ➺

MCKENZI TAYLOR, micro-weddings expert + owner, Cactus Collective Weddings

For adventurous couples looking for spectacular outdoor locations off the beaten path, Cactus Collective Weddings has been their go-to wedding planner since launching in 2017. Wide-open spaces, magnificent desert skies and all the glories of nature have been part of its irresistible draw—the call of the wild! As a pioneer in the now-trending micro-wedding, Cactus Collective Weddings was perfectly poised to weather restrictions imposed by COVID-19. “We don’t skimp on tradition, romance or glamour,” says owner McKenzi Taylor. “It’s just done on a more intimate scale.”

Why I love weddings

“What originally got me into weddings was photography,” says McKenzi. “I love posing couples, capturing their emotions and providing them with amazing memories.” Plus, “I have always been intrigued by people’s love stories,” she continues. “Love is one of the few things we get to choose in life: who we love and why.” As well, McKenzi says, “People who know me find it interesting that I am so passionate about weddings because I’m a bit of a tomboy. But I have found a way to incorporate my sense of outdoor adventure into what I do.”

but wanted a more romantic, traditional celebration than a courthouse or chapel wedding was so gratifying,” says McKenzi. • “This past year we hosted over 300 micro-weddings. Many couples sought us out because they decided to cancel their large wedding and move forward with us instead. The best part is that they were pleasantly surprised to find the weddings we produce are not ‘less than.’ They are just as special, romantic and memorable—just different than what they had orginally envisioned pre-pandemic.” • “Challenging times compel us to appreciate the simple joys of life. Many of our couples had been engaged for two or three years, and they were champing at the bit to make it official. Offering them a beautiful, postcard-like location and helping them organize special little touches made all the difference in the world for them.”

• “Since 2020 became the year of the micro-wedding, it really validated us as a company. We did go the extra mile to add a lot more traditional touches to our “new normal” weddings to give couples who came to us after canceling big celebrations all of the traditions and fanfare of a larger wedding. We will continue to carry those more traditional elements into our weddings.” • “We actually grew rapidly as more and more people discovered our niche. I think the best thing I did was to bring on additional people to support the business. With the extra talent and brainpower, we have been able to grow and expand to new cities. I also really love the community of wedding professionals I get to work with. It’s a great, creative group of people.”

Brighter days ahead

• “Now that the world sees micro-weddings in a new light, we are looking forward to being a couple’s first choice, once again, rather than work with a lot of panicked brides who came to us because they had to cancel their original plans.” • “So many couples have told us how it was such a relief and so extraordinary to make their special day all about them with a smaller wedding. I suspect that with this shift in consciousness, more and more couples will be going micro.”  Viva Nevada!

ADVICE

FIVE THINGS

BY CATE DOTY

I LEARNED ABOUT WEDDINGS FROM WRITING FOR

THE NEW YORK TIMES BIG WEDDINGS, SMALL WEDDINGS, WEDDINGS THAT ENDED IN DIVORCE — I’ve seen them all. I started

working in wedding catering as a teenager, and after college, I went to work for The New York Times’ society desk, where I wrote wedding announcements for some of America’s most famous (and infamous) couples. I even wrote a book about it. So you could say I know a bit about weddings: the before, the during, and what happens the day after. After more than 20 years, I’ve learned a few things about weddings and how important it is, after all the fuss and flowers, to focus on what’s in front of you: the person you love. It’s going to be fine. It poured buckets on our wedding day, an outdoor spring affair with dinner under a pavilion. Oh, and my husband disappeared the morning of our wedding. But we had the foresight to buy a bunch of umbrellas, and Michael’s groomsmen eventually found him in the hot tub at his hotel, where he was trying to recover from a hangover. Things will happen on your wedding day that you didn’t plan for; some might be funny, and others might not. But keep your eye on the prize: You’re getting married to the person you love with your whole heart. The things that you’re working so hard on right now are going to be great, and even if your printer messed up the place cards, your guests will still figure out where to sit.

2 Everything you’re feeling is OK.

Planning a wedding, and getting married, will be one of the most emotional experiences you’ll ever have. Every emotion you’re experiencing right now — happy, sad, fearful, loving, angry, frustrated — this is all normal, and all expected. I cried a lot before I got married, and at what felt like the craziest things: trying on my wedding ring, for example, or walking to a yoga class. But a wedding is the ending of something, and the beginning of something else— one of life’s greatest traditions, and also one it its biggest changes. Let yourself feel what you need to feel, and lean on your friends and family. But that said...

for everyone you know is fighta great battle. 3Being kind,

That might sound a little dramatic. But when you’re in the throes of wedding planning, it can be hard to remember that not everyone is as singularly focused as you are on your wedding. Your wedding dress fitter has faced the tantrums of many brides, but she’s still on the floor, pinning your dress to your specifications. Your caterer can’t control the food supply chain — especially now — but they’ll work with you as best they can. Your attendant who lost their job during the pandemic might

not be able to afford the outfit you selected, but they still want to be there for you on your day. A little perspective and kindness, even when you feel like so much is being asked of you, can go a long way to a happier wedding — and help you avoid emotional fallout after you get back from your honeymoon.

4 Drink water.

I’m serious. I had a pounding headache by the end of my wedding, and it was because I hadn’t drunk enough water that evening. We had a spectacular wait staff who cleared dishes and glasses attentively, but that also meant my water glass walked off before I got a chance to drain it. Pair it with alcohol, buy yourself a “bride only” water bottle and put it under your chair. Then, task one of your trusty attendants with the single goal of making sure you have a full glass of water at all times — do whatever you need to do. Drink water. Trust me. Your body will thank you later.

your wedding is going to be day of your life, 5 Iftheyoubestthink

wait until you see what happens next. Because in the end, that’s what it’s all about, right? As much as we want our weddings to be the perfect day for us, we can’t forget what’s on the other side of it: a marriage, with all the joys and complications that life can bring. I’ve been married 11 years, and life has thrown a lot at us: health scares, moves, job changes, funerals, miscarriage—and also some of the greatest happinesses and thrills a person can experience. Throughout everything, with all the Cate Doty’s memoir, joy and chaos that life can bring, we’ve had Mergers and Acquisitions a home in each other’s arms. The vows we (G.P. 1Something will go wrong.

Two Weeks& Counting It’s crunch time, just days before the wedding. Here’s how to cross everything off your to-do list without losing your mind.

T

here’s the bride who spends two years planning her wedding. And the couple who weds mere months after becoming engaged. Most brides fall somewhere in between, yet all three planning scenarios have one crucial thing in common: a two-week pre-wedding countdown time, crammed with unanticipated planning tasks, stress galore and moments of pure panic. When you get engaged, you experience an initial flurry of wedding planning, centering on when and where the event will occur. Once that’s out of the way, however, many brides are left with a quieter period of at least a few months. A number of things happen during this time—choosing vendors, buying wedding attire, sending out the invitations—but, inevitably, many of the most important tasks must wait until the end. Fortunately, there are ways that you can make a hectic time smoother, says Leah Ingram, author of Plan Your Wedding in No Time. “Try to avoid procrastinating throughout the planning process,” she says. “Otherwise, you’ll feel crazed just when you should be wrapping up your wedding plans and looking forward to a wonderful big day.” Getting near the home stretch? Whether you’ve been Miss Organized all along or are just getting started, we can help.

MAKE IT LEGAL It’s too bad you can’t get your marriage license early on in the process, but in most cases it is good only for a short period of time, meaning you have to head to city hall within a few days of your wedding. Be sure to call ahead to find out the fee and to be certain that you have all the documents you need.

FIRST, MAKE A LIST. And check it, well, every day. Be as detailed as you have to be, writing down everything from “call caterer” to “pack nail file.” Says one recent bride, “I’m a naturally disorganized person, and out of anxiety I was constantly writing things on a list. The problem I had toward the end was that my list kept getting longer and more overwhelming!” To avoid this predicament, it’s important to…

PHOTOGRAPHY: THE DAY COLLECTIVE

DELEGATE! Even if you’ve been a one-woman (or, okay, one-couple) planning show until this crunch period, it’s time to share the joy. Bridesmaids, mom, friends, whoever’s been asking to help should be pulled off the bench and pressed into service. They can: make phone calls to confirm times and arrangements with your band or DJ, photographer and transportation company; help write escort cards; make and/or wrap favors and gifts; assemble programs; and lots more. TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS. If you’re changing your name, call your town or city’s courthouse to find out the process (usually there’s a form you can download). Don’t forget: driver’s license, passport, Social Security card, credit cards. Also, change your beneficiaries for investment accounts and insurance plans. If you are moving, put in a change-of-address card at the post office, or do it online, at usps.com/moversguide. GET GUEST-READY. If you are hosting out-of-towners, reconfirm any hotel or transportation arrangements. Assemble gift baskets for hotel rooms (this is a good task to delegate). And, it’s a pain, but it happens to almost every bride and groom: There are always guests who don’t respond by the RSVP date. Someone (again, delegate) has to get in touch with these laggards and be sure to get an answer out of everyone. GIVE YOUR CATERER A FINAL HEAD COUNT. This very important task should be taken care of a week to several days prior to the wedding, so that the caterer can order the right amount of food and accurately tally your final bill. This is also a good time to appoint a reliable bridesmaid in charge of getting crucial personal items—the cake

DON’T FORGET YOURSELF DATE YOUR FIANCÉ. Most couples get so busy with wedding tasks, they forget to spend time together. Even a sneak-away lunch can make you feel romantic again. HIT THE SPA. Along with your prewedding beauty treatments, throw in a relaxing massage or reflexology treatment, and you’ve got a nice just-for-you package. GO TO THE BEACH. OR THE PARK. Or wherever you can connect with nature. You may want to bring along a parent, a sibling or a girlfriend for some calm time together. PICK YOUR NIGHT-BEFORE SLEEPING SPOT CAREFULLY. If spending the night in your childhood bed feels right, do that. But if your family’s going to keep you up, forget it. Get a hotel room alone or with a bridesmaid—or forgo tradition and stay with your fiancé. The point is to find the best place to get your beauty sleep.

knife, toasting glasses—to and from your reception site. Put another bridesmaid in charge of divvying up tips for your vendors into envelopes to distribute on the day of the wedding.

DOUBLE-CHECK ALL THE ATTIRE YOU’LL NEED. When you go for your final dress fitting, don’t forget to bring along the undergarments you’ll actually be wearing on your wedding day, just to be sure that, for example, there aren’t any potentially embarrassing bra or panty lines visible beneath a clingy dress. At home, walk around in your wedding shoes a few times to avoid big-day blisters that can really cramp your style. Also, consider other items of clothing that you and your groom will need. If it helps, write it all down,

even the things you’re absolutely sure you would never forget. (We know of a groom who conscientiously packed all his underwear for his honeymoon and was left without a single clean pair to wear on the wedding day!)

TAKE YOUR SEATS. With your final guest list in hand, start on the seating arrangements. Begin with the easy tables—parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, close friends in natural groupings (work, college and so on). Then, gather up the harder-to-place guests (single pals and relatives) and sprinkle them in empty spots throughout your tables, preferably, of course, with a few other people they already know. GET HONEYMOON-READY. Call to confirm all of your travel arrangements, pack (or, if you’ll have plenty of post-wedding time to do this chore, pull out the necessary clothes you’re taking along for your destination) and be sure all of your important travel documents are in a safe place. Also, be sure that both you and your fiancé know where they are. Two heads are better than one! PUT TOGETHER A BIG-DAY EMERGENCY KIT. The kit may “contain everything from tampons, hairspray, extra pantyhose and combs, to pain relievers, antacid, clear nail polish, breath freshener, a small sewing kit, spare earring backs, safety pins and deodorant,” advises Ingram. “Even if brides never end up needing anything in their kits, having everything on hand always seems to help them relax and enjoy themselves. It’s worth the trouble!” ENVISION THE DAY. Sit down with your fiancé, your parents and the officiant to map out the big-day schedule so you can catch and correct potential glitches. Write down each step, if that seems helpful (many brides find this gives them a sense of control). Make sure that everyone in the bridal party knows exactly what their jobs are and where they need to be at specific times. One bride we know did this before her wedding, and suddenly realized that the chapel had no foyer, leaving no obvious spot for her dad and her to “hide” while guests were being seated. They came up with a plan: to linger for as long as possible at another location within walking distance until they got a signal from a groomsman that the time was right. ¢

WAYS TO CUT CATERING

COSTS

TAKE A BITE OUT OF YOUR FOOD AND DRINK BUDGET WITH THESE CLEVER IDEAS. BY SHARON NAYLOR

COCKTAIL HOUR Hand pass pricier appetizers like shrimp, scallops or other seafood items, rather than setting them out for guests to serve themselves. Caterers tell us that guests consume 40 percent fewer pieces this way. “Put out big bowls of colorful, lush salads with grilled vegetables, which allows you to show generosity without spending a whole lot,” says Shai Tertner, president of Shiraz Events in New York City, Miami and Los Angeles. Tertner suggests adding punch to your presentation by using colorful bowls, giant woks and

2

other unusual platters. Comparison shop for seafood. For example, calamari and mussels are often half the price of shrimp cocktail and scampi. Ask your caterer for a list of less costly seafood appetizers. Skip the big cubedcheese platter. It’s often the least popular item at a wedding cocktail hour, because most guests have had cheese platters at office parties and elsewhere. No one will miss them. Just because you’re on a budget, your crudités don’t have to show it. Instead

of carrot sticks and cucumber rounds, choose artichoke hearts, broccoli flowers, radishes cut in heart shapes or other creative choices, with flavored dipping sauces. Focus on good looks. A lovely way to impress your guests, while being costeffective, is to focus on elegant but easy presentation, say the pros at Feastivities Events in Philadelphia, PA. For example, try using clear glass cylinders and square glass vessels of varying heights to hold fresh baby vegetables. Serve macaroni and cheese in martini glasses,

mini grilled cheese bites made in sandwich presses and tiny crab cakes with tartar sauce. These crowd-pleasers cost much less than the usual fare. Offer theme stations, such as a fajita station or Thai station. “The Asian station, where it’s more about the display, is very popular now,” Tertner says. “We like to set out large woks or serve food in take-out containers that coordinate with the wedding’s theme or colors. We also create pyramids of basmati and jasmine rice, lots of egg noodles and a broad range of condiments. These ingredients are not costly, but they can make it look as though you have invested a lot.” Skip the raw bar—though trendy, a raw bar is among the most exorbitant of stations. Instead, have a hand-passed hors d’oeuvre—tequila-cured salmon served in martini glasses perhaps. Try a pierogi bar. Offer these potato-stuffed dough bites with choices of cheddar cheese, goat cheese or spinach, and a dipping sauce like sour cream or mustard. You don’t need to have a carving station. Prime rib, ham and pork loin can be overly heavy and filling, not to mention quite pricey, for the cocktail hour, say the event and catering team at The Park Savoy in Florham Park, NJ. In cool weather, serve mini cups of clam chowder (again, you are serving seafood at a minimal price), lobster bisque, acorn squash, or any other flavors that are easy on the wallet and appropriate to the season. You won’t need a pasta station if pasta is being served later on. Not only will you save, you’ll ensure guests will have room for dinner!

their minds. Ask your chef which seafoods will be in season at the time of your event—and thus be less expensive by several hundreds of dollars. Some meats are pricier at certain times of the year. Let your caterer know that you would like to consider those that will be available at a good price when your wedding takes place. Serve a delicious vegetarian entrée. With so many people going green nowadays, even nonvegetarians may appreciate this choice, just because it’s different from the usual fare at weddings. Even simple entrées can look gourmet when topped with an artful tower of vegetables. For savings of up to 20 percent, consider family-style dishes like meat or pasta. To feed your photographer and musicians, arrange for dishes in a lower price range—this may cost 60 percent less per person. If you plan to have children at the reception, choose a caterer who offers free or half-priced meals for children up to age 16.

22

14

No one will need a five-course feast after cocktails—three will do just fine. If you offered salads at the cocktail party, eliminate the salad at dinner (double savings!). Or keep the salad and combine it with an appetizer. A salad with two grilled shrimp is a budget success because the chef can buy less for both courses. Use a great sauce on less expensive chicken or pasta dishes. Tertner suggests doing something unusual—an espresso sauce over chicken, for example. Featuring a gourmet salad of spring greens, rather than the usual Caesar salad, will prime guests to be wowed by the entrée options that follow,

15

16 17

even if they are somewhat less expensive. Forget a top-dollar filet! Less costly braised boneless short ribs are a wonderful choice, whether served plated or at food stations. Ask your caterer to show you price options for different cuts of lamb and pork as well as beef. Make pasta more interesting by choosing pumpkin ravioli, or spinach and goat-cheese manicotti. Instead of offering a choice of three entrées, design a platter with beef medallions and either grilled shrimp or crab cakes. That way, you’ll use far less food than if you had to plan for a large quantity of all three entrées to have on hand should guests change

Dressing up your vegetable dishes does a lot to make them look expensive: Fan out mini carrots and use chives to tie together servings of asparagus. Basics like potatoes help fill out a menu, but why not try risotto instead of spuds for something a bit new and different. Not all vegetables are priced alike. Ask for a detailed price list to make

better budget choices. Serve salad creatively. Consider tableside servings of organic mixed greens in beautiful bowls. Guests will enjoy helping themselves. If you design a tasting menu of seven or eight small courses instead of four big ones, you’ll save about 15 percent while giving guests more variety. ➺

AT THE BAR

33

Instead of a full bar, serve beer and wine instead, with one or two signature cocktails that you’ve personalized with a clever name and your wedding colors. When choosing your liquors, go midshelf instead of topshelf: That way you will save up to 30 percent (and most guests won’t be able to tell the difference). Or dress up your signature drinks with fun garnishes. Ask the bar manager to provide curled lemon and lime peels, orange slices or mini fruit kebobs on toothpicks to coordinate with your wedding colors. These garnishes are often free, and because they add to the festive

look, everyone thinks you’ve spent a whole lot more than you really have. Eliminate shots or drinks that use a number of liquors—these all raise the bar tab. If you’re stocking your own bar, research less expensive wine vintages on winespectator.com. If you can’t negotiate the corkage fee out of your contract entirely, at least discuss how you can lower it. At up to $5 per bottle, it’s certainly worth a try. Skip the champagne. Guests can toast you with the drinks they already have in hand. (And most usually prefer that anyway.) Or look

Forgo the Viennese dessert table, which may cost up to $15 a guest. It’s likely most guests won’t miss it at all. Your site’s package may include a wedding cake plus one additional dessert (for example, chocolatecovered berries), and many couples agree that this is a great choice. Stay with regular cake flavors—they are more budgetfriendly than specialty fillings like cannoli cream or other gourmet choices.

energizing late in the evening. Go bite-size with desserts, like tiny chocolate-covered cheesecakes. By controlling portions, you’re saving one-third the price of a full dessert buffet. Dessert drinks are a notorious budget breaker, so consider instead chocolate or coffee floats with fresh whipped cream and chocolate shavings, served in pretty sugar-rimmed glasses instead of a costly (and complex) international coffee bar with a lot of liquor-infused drinks. 

Negotiate either to lower or eliminate the cake-cutting fee from your overall package (this is a charge for servers to cut and plate each slice of cake and can run you $1.50 to $8 per slice). Choose a less labor-intensive wedding cake. Buttercream frosting will cost you less than rolled fondant. Keep to a classic, elegant look for your cake by leaving out elaborate sugarpaste ornamentation, and save hundreds of dollars. A five-tier tower is nice, but a smaller three-tier one is even nicer because it will take a smaller bite out of your budget. Have a sheet cake in the same flavors waiting in the kitchen for the staff to cut and serve. Do you really need a chocolate fountain and flaming bananas? There’s no need to pay extra for “entertainment” desserts (your guests will have plenty of fun anyway). Adding one simple but exotic dessert probably won’t break the bank. icking the perfect venue for a sustainable celebration (to follow their civil ceremony à deux) was a no-brainer for Daniela. “I've always loved nature and the Miami Beach Botanical Garden holds a special place in my heart,” she says. The couple opted for an outdoor ceremony before sunset to cut down on energy use. Friends were at the ready to pitch in, officiating, filming, baking and more. “Most importantly, my mother patiently and beautifully hand-wrote each of the 100 dinner menus,” Daniela says. “Wedding design often involves having ‘more stuff,’ ” she continues, “but I am proud we stayed mindful about sustainability and impact. In the end, our day was just as special as I hoped it would be.”

HONEYMOON & DESTINATION WEDDING GUIDE

Sweetest Dreams

Cities that sparkle, hideaways that shine, beaches that dazzle—welcome to our tour of some of the world’s most romantic—and star-studded—destinations. One couple gave their guests an A-list wedding weekend at a fantastical resort hidden in Mexico’s tropical trees in the foothills of Cabo San Lucas. Another opted for a just-the-two-of-us celebration at a modernist resort in sun-drenched Scottsdale, Arizona. Las Vegas remains a perennial favorite to say “I do,” while Charleston has gone decidedly hip with its newest hotel opening. Plus, we share some of the best resorts that promise to revitalize mind, body and spirit..

RESORT ROUNDUP An open-air treatment area at Palmaïa, The House of Aïa.

DESTINATION BLISS THESE POSH PROPERTIES PROMISE NEXT-LEVEL GUEST CARE WITH A HOLISTIC BENT. BY JENNA MAHONEY

Palmaïa–The House of Aïa Say the words “all-inclusive” and “Riviera Maya” and chances are you’re imagining something other than a sustainable, organic beachfront paradise that’s exclusively geared toward the balancing of mind, body and soul. Yet, that’s exactly what this enclave on Mexico’s Caribbean coast promises. There are sound-healing sessions and guided meditation experiences, yoga instruction and group tai chi classes, along with astrological readings and crystal healing. All accommodations are spacious suites with oversize windows showcasing gorgeous water views—the swim-out options are especially romantic (room rates start at $1,020 a night and are all inclusive; thehouseofaia.com).

Shou Sugi Ban House It may be only two-and-a-half hours from the city that never sleeps, yet this sanctuary of health, wellness and just 13 intimate villa accommodations feels more like two hundred thousand miles away from stress, imbalance and fast-food eateries. The vibe here is as holistic as it is whole being, with a focus on self exploration for mindfulness in body and spirit. The wooded property is serenely latticed with paths that induce private reflection and wind past fountains, reflective pools, Japanese gardens and dune-, scapes. Meals are mostly plant-based (room rates start at $1,235 a night; shousugibanhouse.com).

FUN FACT: Massage was first practiced in India in 3500 BC (or earlier). The sacred healing therapy was then brought to China and Southeast Asia in about 2700 BC and Egypt in 2500 BC.

Dining is tops at Origins Lodge in Costa Rica. Origins Lodge Costa Rica

ORIGINS LODGE High in the mountains, spanning over 111 acres of tropical Costa Rican jungle stands this exclusive estate property with rustic luxe accommodations that promises the very best in cuisine and wellness. The only hotel in the country to have a Michelin-starred chef, the organic cuisine program is a stellar standout. Menus are French-influenced and change daily based on local produce and flowers, among other ingredients available. Activities also reflect the pura vida ethos and are heavy on the holistic, with yoga, equine programming and hiking being among the most popular (room rates start at $910 a night and include breakfast; originslodge.com).

Soothing spa offerings at Miraval Berkshires.

MIRAVAL BERKSHIRES With the tagline “Life in Balance,” it’s no surprise that this all-inclusive spa resort set in the pastoral New England hilly country that’s practically synonymous with the concept of wellness retreats is robust with offerings. There’s yoga and massage, of course, as well as meals sourced from the on-site farm that are as flavorful as they are healthy. The extensive activity menu also includes lectures and interactive classes on sustainability, meditation and “creative expression” (think: photography; journaling). And there’s a seemingly endless array of equine experiences and fitness classes—we love the cardio drumming (room rates start at $629 a night and are all inclusive; miravalresorts.com).

There are just 10 guest rooms, which each feature guided meditations by Deepak Chopra, sulfate-free bath amenities and yoga props, as well as exclusive access to fitness gear such as Peloton bikes, Alo Yoga programming and rowing machines (room rates start at $588 a night; fourseasons.com).

SIX SENSES IBIZA There’s something in the air here—just the act of checking into this beach-facing property tucked into the northern part of the idyllic island of Ibiza promises the ultimate sensation of complete and utter relaxation. Of course, the unparalleled wellness offerings enhance even what one may call the un-improvable—chic, yet comfortable sustainable design, superlative organic cuisine and jaw-dropping natural beauty. Personalized programming is the marquee attraction (sleep, detox, rejuvenation, among others). Spa amenities also include the standards—massages, facials, manicures—albeit with a stunning attention to rejuvenation, as well as an expansive facility with hot and cold pools, numerous couple rooms and a traditional hammam. Our favorite spot, however, may be the sea-facing outdoor yoga platform that feels kissed by temperate Mediterranean breezes (room rates start at $460 a night; sixsenses.com). ¢

WEDDINGS AWAY

Delano Las Vegas.

In every issue, we scout a spot that’s perfect for tying the knot away from home. by Jenna Mahoney

Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas.

W

The Cosmopolitain of Las Vegas.

ith its nonstop neon and its constant ka-ching, Las Vegas is something of a punchline when it comes to all-out, all-night partying, garish gaming and quickie weddings. But behind the sparkling lights, the endless champagne clinks and the Elvis impersonators, the dazzling city in the desert is a romantic oasis promising luck in love. And getting hitched here isn’t gauche, it’s glam and can set the scene for love everlasting—just ask Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas; Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos and Dorothea Hurley and Jon Bon Jovi. Here are some spots that hit the jackpot for hosting romantic weddings.

DELANO LAS VEGAS This non-gaming hotel is chic, cool and with the right amount of Vegas sparkle for an intimate group—and did we mention the cuisine by Alain Ducasse? With access to some of the Strip’s most treasured properties—Mandalay Bay and its cool wave pool; MGM Grand and its exclusive mansion—the hideaway offers the best of all worlds. Celebrations here reflect the feel of the hotel and are intimate

in size and scope. All are executed by the pro team at sister property Mandalay Bay (wedding packages start at $950 and include chapel fee, an officiant, flowers, photography, music and more; delanolasvegas.mgmresorts.com).

THE VENETIAN RESORT LAS VEGAS If you were to say that romance was invented in Italy, there’d be an overwhelming amount of people who would agree. And arriving at this all-suite resort smack dab in the center of the famed Las Vegas Strip is like stepping into the meandering streets of Italy, complete with an adjacent canal. Food is superior here, as is the entertainment. Marry here and you can float around the property on an authentic gondola. Ceremonies can be held in the picturesque gardens or on the pretty terraces or in the Italian-esque chapel (wedding packages start at $1,850 and include ceremony and officiant, some flowers and photography; venetian.com).

THE COSMOPOLITAN OF LAS VEGAS Considering the name, it’s no surprise that this boutique (by Vegas standards) hideaway of 3,027 rooms is one hundred

percent chic. There are elevated eateries and quieter watering holes and the showstopper—an elegant champagne bar enveloped entirely in crystals. It’s also got some of the best high-end shopping in town—the adjacent area houses Tom Ford, Lanvin, Hermès and more. Weddings here are for the most part intimate and hosted in oversized suites, penthouses and bungalows or on private terraces (wedding packages start at $3,500 and include ceremony venue, an officiant, a wedding coordinator and more; cosmopolitanlasvegas.com).

WALDORF ASTORIA LAS VEGAS Size matters when it comes to stellar service at this glittering glass cube that flaunts fewer than 400 rooms. Everything in this quiet hotel is exquisitely detailed from the guest rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows and sumptuous linens to the personalized service and the jaw-dropping, two-floor spa. Like the accommodations, the reception rooms that top out at 480 guests, are #blessed with endless natural light, which is a rarity for Vegas event spaces (elopement packages start at $4,800 and include ceremony, an officiant, a photographer, a welcome bottle of champagne, pool cabana or high tea, a two-night stay and more; waldorfastorialasvegas.com). ¢

Legally Wedded Famously, Nevada has no waiting period or blood-test requirements to swap vows. Marriage licenses, however, are required, as is proof of age. Proper legal identification must be presented along with the $85 fee in person.

LOS ANGELES NATIVES and influencers Samuel Anthony Harwit and Erik Velasquez have fallen in love—not only with each other, but also their adopted hometown Phoenix, a city of 299 days of sunshine and epic landscapes. When it came time to make it official, the couple opted for a just-thetwo-of-them celebration at the Andaz Scottsdale, a property that mirrors their appreciation for design and awesome cuisine as well as the area’s natural beauty (to note: the unbeatable views of Camelback Mountain). “There’s a fabulous blend of manicured landscaping and clean mid-century architecture,” says Samuel. “We knew the staff would take exceptional care of us, but even so, the property blew our minds.”

George Romero at Andaz handled all the details.

“When we decided to get married, what we would be eating was already top of mind,” says Samuel. And the food was certainly a highlight for the couple who chose the Andaz Scottsdale based on the cuisine program. “We had some of the most delicious hors d’oeuvres—cheese-stuffed dates, lamb meatballs and prosciutto and fig crostini,” they say. The couple toasted with Veuve Clicquot and savored fish and steak entrées served after a robust salad featuring smoked nuts and fresh citrus. The chef also prepared their exquisite wedding cake for two: “It was coconut cake served with homemade ice cream and pineapple that was flambéed tableside,” they recall.

Named for its shape— the head and hump of a kneeling camel—the hulking landmark was first designated a protected land in 1910 and later became a city park in the late 1960s. Today, it’s a centerpiece of the region and boasts two advanced hiking trails.

Erik and Samuel love to eat. At the Andaz, they say brunch at Weft & Warp Art Bar + Kitchen is a must. Fresh juices and waffles are among the standouts. “And don’t skip the chilaquiles!” The resort’s position in the heart of the city makes it accessible to some of the couple’s top picks. “You can walk or get a ride from the house car to two of my favorite restaurants: SumoMaya and The Fat Ox,” says Samuel. Each is known for straight-from-the-farm ingredients prepared in Southwest/Asian fusion and modern Italian dishes, respectively. Other spots they love include Crujiente Tacos, Nobu sushi, Toca Madera, a fine Mexican restaurant and Maple & Ash for steaks.

The Golden Isles is undoubtedly one of the best-kept secrets when it comes to planning a wedding. Here, you’ll find dozens of beachfront, historic, romantic and luxurious venues with helpful teams ready to make your special day absolutely perfect. Whether you’re looking to host your wedding in the Golden Isles, or simply have your engagement pictures taken while you’re on vacation, these are our top five favorite and most Instagrammable spots for the perfect photos.

1

DRIFTWOOD BEACH, JEK YLL ISLAND

Easily one of the most popular (and beautiful!) beaches in the Golden Isles, Driftwood Beach is the result of years of erosion, leaving behind gorgeous weathered trees that line this stretch of beach. It’s incredibly dramatic at sunrise and it’s totally worth the early wakeup call!

2

JEK YLL ISLAND HISTORIC DISTRICT

This was once the winter playground for some of America’s most elite families. The “cottages” that adorn this 240-acre historic district were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s and create the perfect timeless backdrop for photos with their perfectly manicured gardens and unique architecture.

LET’S RUN AWAY AND GET MARRIED!

Whether you desire to say “I do” on the beach or surrounded by ancient live oaks, fall for the charms of the Jekyll Island Club Resort and let us be the destination wedding for you.

912-635-5170 JEKYLL ISLAND CLUB RESORT jekyllclub.com/georgia-weddings

3

AVENUE OF THE OAKS, ST. SIMONS ISLAND

This beautiful lane formed by a seemingly endless tunnel of centuries-old live oak trees was once the entrance to Retreat Plantation on St. Simons Island. Avenue of the Oaks’ sprawling branches filled with picturesque Spanish moss create an ultra-romantic scene that looks like it came straight out of The Notebook.

4

5

HISTORIC DOW NTOW N BRUNSWICK

Historic Downtown Brunswick was founded in the late 1700s, and many of the original buildings reflect the unique Victorian architecture of that time period. Whether you’re strolling hand-in-hand in one of the Signature Squares or walking past Old City Hall or the Historic Ritz Theatre on Newcastle Street, your photos will be a timeless classic.

WESLEY MEMORIAL GARDENS, ST. SIMONS ISLAND

The Wesley Memorial Gardens are located on the north end of St. Simons Island, a more secluded spot on the island. They’re tucked away amongst untouched maritime forests, the beloved Christ Church and Fort Frederica National Monument. An 18-foot Celtic cross sits at the middle of the garden and is surrounded by benches practically begging for a photo-op.

IT’S FITTING THAT A WEDDING SO ABUNDANT WITH EXQUISITE, MADE-FOR-THE-’GRAM iam dolupta tiossi details would have been influenced by a social media account. “My husband always wanted a desti- acero quideli nation wedding in Cabo,” says Serina Larez about Frankie, whom she married at an intimate celebration in October 2020. “I followed our photographers, Gina and Ryan for a while and always loved their

photos from Acre,” she explains. After getting engaged, Serina did some more research to discover the 25-acre, adults-only hideaway is located in San José del Cabo. “It felt so meant to be!” she says. The California couple hosted a small group of friends for a days-long celebration that showcased the best of the property and setting. “Cabo and Acre were so perfect,” they say.

“My husband and I and most of our guests are from California, so the quick flight to get to Cabo was a huge factor. Acre’s beauty— the ceremony area is a mango orchard—the excellent food, vendors and weather made it impossible to choose anywhere else.” Acre’s bespoke farm-to-table menu at the reception.

Frankie and Serina said “I do” under the shade of fruit trees.

Buen Provecho

Excellent food and drink is an Acre hallmark. In fact, the foliage-dense, secret gardenesque property, with its treehouses and villa accommodations positioned in the area’s foothills, actually made its debut as a restaurant. Currently, Acre offers the bounty of the region infused with the inventiveness of the California culinary movement in a trio of eateries. All feature memorable meals and equally exquisite cocktails with most ingredients sourced on-site. Similarly, the food at Serina and Frankie’s celebration was a stellar standout. “Acre’s food is truly amazing. Everything was farm to table. And we still crave the cheddar biscuits,” they recall. “We had a mix of fish, meat and veggie options for cocktail hour and our main course,” says Serina, who also praised the paloma cocktails—“they’re the best.” ➺

Fish tacos may not have been invented in the twin towns of Los Cabos, but this is where they were perfected. And every restaurant in the desert-meets-palm-trees corridor showcases the fresh-from-the-sea dish on their menu. In addition to the tacos served at Acre, Serina and Frankie love the tacos at La Lupita Taco & Mezcal, a local watering hole where they first saw their wedding band perform. Yumana Kitchen, the site of the couple’s welcome party, is another favorite local eatery. “Our guests still talk about their lobster tacos.”

Getting married in Mexico requires many steps. All couples must be 18 or older and not currently married. You’ll need to present a valid passport, tourist card (issued upon arrival), birth certificate, blood-test results (done in Mexico), completed marriage application forms from the local registry and four witnesses. All foreign documents, with the exception of your passport, will need to be translated, apostilled and notarized. The couple, plus their witnesses, must arrive in Mexico four business days before the wedding day for legal ceremonies.
