Q&A

ANSWERS

wedding

Straight talk, smart solutions by Diane Forden, Editor in Chief

Q

My friend missed her son’s first dance and cake cutting and is heartbroken. She was out on the terrace with other guests and was not notified. The couple did not have an MC or DJ but they did have a wedding coordinator. Any advice? Chicago, Illinois

A

So sorry to hear this! I can’t stress enough how important it is for couples to think through the details of their day, and even if they plan on having a small, casual celebration it’s important that family members (especially parents!) share in special moments such as the first dance, toast and cake cutting. They needed to communicate clear instructions to their wedding coordinator—but as a professional planner, she should have known to make an announcement that the first dance and cake cutting were about to begin. RSVP PLEASE

Q

Our response cards are due in less than a week and about 25 guests have not yet sent in their RSVPs. Our caterer needs a head count. Should we email a reminder Freeport, Maine or just call?

A

If you have all 25 guests’ emails contact them immediately. I would also call them and ask your fiancé, both sets of parents (especially if any of the non-respondents are their friends and relatives) and attendants to pitch in. A phone call conveys a sense of urgency and you’ll get a quicker response. I’m sure many of these invitees do intend to come—either they had all good intentions of sending in their RSVPs but let it slide or perhaps their response cards are

already in the mail. No matter the reason, you’ll be relieved to get a head count for your caterer. SHOWER PRESSURE

Q

Although my husband and I are paying for my daughter’s wedding the groom’s mom wants me to co-host a shower with her. I told her we cannot afford any more expenses but she’s insistent. What should I do?

A

Delray Beach, Florida

Stand firm. There’s no reason why you should feel pressured to co-host a shower for your daughter (which is traditionally the responsibility of the attendants) especially since you’re already picking up the tab for the big day. If the groom’s mom wants to host (and pay for) a shower she can certainly do so but you should not feel guilty or obligated to pitch in financially. AT-HOME WEDDING TIPS

Q

My fiancé and I would like to have a tented wedding at my parents’ home. They have a huge backyard and we think it will be more cost-effective. What do we need to Columbia, South Carolina consider?

A

There are quite a few things to take into consideration. While an athome wedding can be lovely and unique, there are a number of details that may not prove as cost-effective as you’d like. Rental fees are required for the tent, tables, chairs, linens, silverware and glassware, for example. You will also need to rent a refrigeration truck and a dance floor. Depending on the weather,

you might need heating lamps, fans or an air-conditioning unit. There should be plenty of restrooms available for guests so you may be required to rent trailers that provide them. Make sure there is adequate space for guest parking and that the kitchen is large enough to accommodate the catering team. There should be enough electrical power available to handle kitchen needs, entertainment and lighting so a generator may be necessary. Also, access to the home the week before the wedding is essential as there will be lots of deliveries. And finally, you’ll need to get permission from your local township and acquire any necessary permits. That said, if you research all of these factors and a wedding at your parents’ home still fits into the budget, then by all means go for it and enjoy the festivities! ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. And send your planning questions to us at mail@bridalguide.com.

DESSY

PARTY CHIC

Varying hues and flattering silhouettes make Vivian Diamond’s collections for Dessy a bridesmaid must-have.

LEFT TO RIGHT: Off-theshoulder dress with cuffed detail along neckline. Dress with flutter sleeves. Dress with halter neckline. Prices upon request. All dresses by Studio Design.

How would you describe the design aesthetic of your bridesmaid collections, and what kind of bridesmaids are your designs intended for? The aesthetic is sophisticated and refined with flattering lines that complement all figures. Comfort and inclusivity are key factors in our design process; our dresses are made of soft fabrics, like crepe and sateen twill, and are intended for all bridesmaids—no matter their shape or fashion taste. We offer about 300 styles to suit the needs of any bridal party.

How would you like a bridesmaid to feel when she is wearing one of your designs? It’s the bride’s big day; however, her friends should feel equally beautiful as they walk down the aisle. They represent the close friendships the bride developed before, during or after she met the love of her life, and we want them to feel special too.

SMOOTH MOVES TOP LEFT: Off-theshoulder dress, about $271, ABOVE: Dress with open, crisscross back detail, about $265, Both dresses by Dessy Collection.

What colors, styles and skirt lengths do you think will be most popular in 2019? A few trending colors right now include blue (ranging from light to dark), neutral colors like dusty or desert rose and deeper hues, such as burgundy, cabernet and hunter green. In terms of style, long skirts are still the most popular, though we are seeing more brides request shorter lengths than previous seasons. Overall, clean lines and simple silhouettes are going to be prevalent in 2019.

What are some ways that a bride can add her own personal touch to her bridal party’s style? I would suggest

ACE YOUR BASE When it comes to big-day beauty perfection, it’s all about that base. A flawless face is yours with these tips from the pros. by Kate Watson

LIQUID

THIS FORMULATION OFFERS LONGEVITY AND A RANGE OF COVERAGES & EFFECTS.

Benefit Hello Happy Soft Blur Foundation

Best for: Marc Jacobs Beauty global artistry ambassador, Morgane Martini says, “Liquid is great for all skin types. The key is selecting a formulation based on your skin’s needs. Also consider photographs and how much coverage is really needed.”

Marc Jacobs Beauty Re(marc)able Full Cover Foundation

How to apply: Melissa Baker, makeup artist and education director for Merle Norman, uses an angled foundation brush: “It allows me to control how much product is applied and buffed out for a more believable look.”

Swatch product above your jawline and select the color that “disappears” into skin to find your shade.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

STICK

Pack your makeup bag with these essentials for easy, flawless application.

PORTABLE FOUNDATIONS ARE PERFECT FOR WORRY-FREE TOUCH-UPS. Best for: Celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta says these are “great for covering skin imperfections on the go.” Level of coverage: Medium to full How to apply: Martini explains, “foundation sticks are usually very creamy,

buildable and easy to apply directly to skin or using your fingers.” Since sticks have a concentrated amount of high coverage, it’s important to use a product that best matches your natural skin color and thoroughly blend the formula into skin to avoid streaking.

Burberry Fresh Glow Gel Stick Clinique Chubby in the Nude Foundation Stick

With a fine tip of synthetic fibers, this Japonesque Color Collection Foundation Brush offers accuracy in those delicate areas like undereyes and sides of the nose.

Flesh Foundation Stick

Rivera suggests using dish soap with a small amount of water to blot any foundation stains on your dress.

For a sheer, allover dewy look, apply liquid foundation with a moist Beautyblender. The damper the sponge, the dewier the finish.

IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream Oil-Free Matte with SPF

TREATMENT

EXTRA MEASURES

Be wedding-picture perfect with a little help from these specialized treatments. by Natasha Wolff

HIGH-TECH FACIAL TREATMENTS “My brides don’t want to have to wear much makeup on the big day, they want naturally clear, glowing skin,” says celebrity aesthetician Joanna Vargas. To that end, Vargas takes a multi-pronged approach with her Triple Crown Facial, consisting of a deep cleansing, a peel and a stimulating microcurrent treatment, "which leaves you looking de-puffed with defined cheekbones." Vargas is also a proponent of LED light treatments, which employ blue and red light to clarify, brighten, boost collagen and fight acne. You can reap benefits with at-home LED light devices such as Dr. Dennis Gross SpectraLite FaceWare Pro. Top cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman is another fan of light therapy. “There’s no direct contact with the skin, so the light doesn’t cause any burns or skin damage. It’s painless and can be very relaxing.” Triple Crown Facial: from $250 Dr. Dennis Gross SpectraLite: $435.

LASERS Whether you’re looking to do away with brown spots on your décolletage or remove unwanted leg, bikini or underarm hair (men request it for furry backs, ear and nose hair), there’s a laser to address your concern. For complexion perfection, laser resurfacing via one of the new generation devices like Aerolase Neo combats sun damage, lessens wrinkles, dilated blood vessels, acne and melasma. “Aerolase Neo is a newer laser, with a short pulse, which means no pain, no numbing and no redness or recovery time,” enthuses dermatologist Dr. Patricia Wexler of Wexler Dermatology in NYC. Aesthetician Jeannel Astarita, founder of Just Ageless skin-care and body-contouring studio, recommends a series of Laser Genesis sessions to stimulate collagen, address dark spots and minimize pore size while getting acne under control. Laser: about $425-$600 per treatment session

BODY CONTOURING Innovative body-contouring treatments are another protocol suited to brides and grooms alike. SculpSure and Emsculpt can help diminish stubborn fat pockets on the abdomen, love handles, thighs and butt. With SculpSure, an application device administers light-based energy to heat and damage fat cells, which are then swept away by the body’s lymphatic system. Four to six treatments per area of 25 minutes each are required to see results, but most patients experience no pain and there’s no down time (you can go back to work right after). Emsculpt employs high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy to induce so-called supra-maximal contractions of the muscles (think 20,000 pulses per session) to strengthen, tone and firm abdominal muscles, and lift and firm the buttocks—while at the same time breaking down fat cells. Four treatments are required over a two-week period and each treatment is 30 minutes per area. SculpSure: about $1,650 per treatment Emsculpt: from $750 per treatment

THE “BROTOX” EFFECT Chalk it up to social media, “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” and a more gender fluid approach to personal style: Doctors and aestheticians are treating more men than ever. “A typical situation we see is women bringing their fiancés to the office,” says Dr. Daniel Maman, a board-certified plastic surgeon at 740 Park Plastic Surgery in NYC. “And the men are eager to have procedures done.”

INJECTABLES Botox continues to be a top treatment choice for brides and with good reason. It’s fast and effective, with results evident in one to two weeks. The most common target areas are the forehead, around the eyes and between the brows, aka the “elevens”—those vertical lines between the eyebrows. But Botox has other uses as well. “Botox injections in the underarms are a very common request from brides and their partners to combat sweat on their wedding day,” says Dr. Maman. On the filler front, doctors have a wider arsenal of formulas from which to choose than in years past. Juvéderm Voluma XC, Volbella XC and Vollure XC (all by Allergan) are entering the market with specific uses for cheeks, lips and other areas of the face. “These new fillers are better quality, longer lasting and the prices have remained stable so brides are now getting more for their money,” says Dr. Maman. Dr. Engelman loves these hyaluronic acid-based fillers because “the results are immediate, but even better is the fact that hyaluronic acid fillers also encourage collagen production.” Botox: $300-$1,800, depending on area treated Filler: about $950 per syringe

TIMING IS EVERYTHING! Consult with a dermatologist or aesthetician six to eight months before your wedding. Some treatments take multiple sessions for optimum results or might need to be completed two or more weeks ahead of the big day. ¢

It’s key that your makeup brings out your best without overshadowing (sorry, I couldn’t resist!) your natural beauty. Here are some guidelines.

Reasons to Shop at Your Local Bridal Salon

The YES Moment

You,ve probably been dreaming of this day for a long time—with good reason! There is no greater feeling than trying on a wedding gown and seeing yourself as a bride for the very first time. Surrounded by friends and loved ones makes the YES moment that much sweeter! Selection

Make the Dress Your Own

Bridal salons offer the largest selection of reputable designers, styles, and colors.Your consultant will work directly with the designer to ensure everything from the color, to the fabric and the fit, are exactly what you envision.

The dress you try on in the store is just a starting point. Want to add a sleeve? Lower the back? Elongate the train? At a traditional bridal salon, you can work with a seamstress to customize your gown and turn your dream into a reality.

Feel-Good Factor

Special Pricing

When you buy from a trusted, local bridal salon, you not only support your community, but also small businesses mostly owned by women!

No Surprises You get what you pay for. A designer dress may be pricier than similar versions online, but counterfeit gowns can be poorly constructed, ill-fitting, and made out of cheap fabrics, if you receive your gown at all.

If budget is a concern, there are many ways to shop smart at a local salon. Many brick-and-mortar stores offer discounts at designer trunk shows, and host sample sales annually.

So Much More Than Just the Gown Your trained consultant will take precise measurements, assist with alterations, and put you at ease throughout the entire process. The salon will even steam your gown and store it safely until your wedding day!

Modern Elegance

• To us, modern means a stately look that could take place on a number of stages— quite literally—but also in a studio space, a museum or at a chic restaurant.

• Here, dark ghost chairs and black taper candles add a moody, almost gothic edge, but the setting is kept light with crisp white linens and dinner plates. PHOTOGRAPHY: O’MALLEY PHOTOGRAPHERS

• Think sharp and sleek, like tall acrylic stands to hold flowers at the altar or dramatic black flatware with no detailing.

• For a modern wedding, an open floor plan with room for your party to mingle and flow will always suit a design goal.

• Keep in mind that modern can often start with clean lines and a minimal feel, but from there flourishing details can add texture while still keeping the mood intact. Invitations with a botanical bent.

Black and plum accents add drama. Monogrammed insert cards.

Ribbon-cinched tapers serve as party favors.

Timeless Romance

• Is there anything more classic than a church wedding followed by a ballroom reception? We think not.

• The iconic setting shown here is the many-windowed ballroom of the Rainier Club in Seattle, Washington, which we dressed in white Chiavari chairs and satin linens.

• The decor goal was understated and classic, featuring an overall white palette accented with soft touches and delicate colors.

• In a twist on tradition, we suggested the couple cut into a smaller three-tiered cake for the ceremonial cake cutting. Guests were then treated to 10-inch cakes set on white ceramic pedestals at each dining table.

• The test of timelessness was passed with flying colors, The table set with crystal and white. The happy couple.

MONEY MATTERS

WED FOR LESS Take note of these little-known ways to cut costs and save big. by Catey Hill

$

Put a “15-minute warning” into your contract with the photographer. A lot of photographers and videographers charge bigtime fees if your wedding goes longer than the time you’ve booked them for. To prevent that unexpected bill, put a “15-minute warning” clause into your contract stating that they must give you a 15-minute heads up before they begin charging you overtime, and that if they don’t, you will not have to pay for those overages.

Take a tax deduction— on your wedding. You can get a tax deduction for donating some of your wedding purchases to a qualified charitable organization (note that “qualified” is very important: irs.gov/pub/ irs-pdf/p526.pdf) or even just by having your wedding ceremony at certain venues. • If you think you’ll have leftover food from your reception, contact a local homeless shelter and see if you can donate it. • If you’re not going to reuse your flowers, contact your church to ask if you can do-

Consider “business” hotels for your wedding. Hotels that cater primarily to business travelers are typically packed during the week, but have lots of vacancies on weekends. WE ASKED BRIDES TO REVISIT THEIR WEDDINGS AND SHARE WHAT THEY WOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY. BY DEBRA WITT

Brides are planners. They craft color schemes, decode guest lists, crunch numbers, and plot for weeks to pull off the ceremony and party of a lifetime. And almost universally they succeed. Still, no matter how many times a bride crossed her T’s and dotted her I’s, inevitably, there are details she wishes she’d handled differently: missed photo opportunities, vendor mix-ups, decorating delays. To help you avoid these snafus, recent brides have shared their big-day regrets. We then asked wedding pros to examine what went wrong so you don’t wind up repeating their mistakes.

PHOTOGRAPHY: SHAWNA YARBROUGH & DAMION HAMILTON

IF I COULD PLAN IT AGAIN...

I’d hire a videographer. Having endured too many viewings of hours-long wedding videos, Christine Fennessy didn’t once consider hiring a videographer to capture her lakeside nuptials. But a year later, she confesses, she’d love to be able to hit play and revisit the day she was married on the shores of Owasco Lake in Auburn, NY. “I never thought I would say that, but I know I would cry every time I watched it.” THE TAKEAWAY Christine’s not alone in this regard—it was the most repeated “regret” among brides we interviewed. Michelle Engvall, owner of Married + More, A Wedding Planning Boutique in Seattle, says having a videographer “is money well spent, and it doesn’t have to break the bank.” She suggests looking for a professional who offers a “highlights” video package. “These are typically 5 to 10 minutes long, and tell the story of the day from start to finish in a condensed version.” Expect to pay in the neighborhood of $1,500 for a short, edited video with sound. I’d enlist someone to field my calls the entire day. On the morning of her August wedding

in Annville, PA, Lauren Strafford-Shiner woke up excited and relaxed. That soon changed when her phone started to ring. “At first it was family members calling with good wishes,” she recalls. “But then some of the vendors started calling with minor questions or updates.” Lauren wasn’t fazed until her florist phoned to say she was having trouble getting into the church. “That one did get me flustered.” Then it was Lau-

‘‘

did my homework,” says the New Yorker who planned an intimate wedding in a lush SoHo courtyard. When it came time to choose a non-denominational minister to officiate, she found someone whose sample texts were impressive. “We met in person and really seemed to click,” she says. About two months before the wedding, however, the officiant bristled after receiving an email from Giannosa outlining a few

‘‘

I’d lock in a venue before the other details—like my dress! “You’d think in the city of New York finding a venue would be easy,” says Danielle Fernandez, “But we didn’t nail down the space until September and our wedding was in December. Meantime, I’d found my dress in June, and had moved ahead with many other details. I’m just lucky the dress I picked worked for a wedding in a modern space in a SoHo hotel.” THE TAKEAWAY While brides no longer have to follow strict dress rules (who says a sequined ballgown won’t work for a backyard affair?), finding and securing the right location should be a top priority, says Alison Laesser-Keck, creative director of Alison Bryan Destinations. Because the reception dominates most couples’ budgets, it’s smart to get started pronto. “There’s a domino effect to wedding planning decisions,” explains Laesser-Keck. “Each choice is tied to the next one—and if one decision is off in some way it can throw things out of kilter in a major way.”

My brother and sister-in-law assembled a band and played songs for us at the reception. How I wish I had that on video!

ren’s turn to pick up the phone—to find out why the limo hadn’t arrived to take her to the church. “Someone did finally suggest that I ask one of my bridesmaids to field the calls, but I wish I’d asked someone to do this sooner,” she says. THE TAKEAWAY Engvall says she encourages her brides to keep cell phones out of sight the entire day. For brides who haven’t opted for a wedding coordinator, she suggests giving a family member or member of the wedding party a list of all the vendors, with phone numbers and email addresses, as well as a timeline for the day. Inform all of your vendors whom you’ve designated as your point person for the day, she adds.

I’d get personal recommendations before hiring a vendor. Diann Giannosa took her time before making even one call to prospective vendors. “I read articles and web reviews, and really

details. “He called me in attack mode and I knew I couldn’t have him marry us.” She scrambled and found a replacement, but wishes she’d had personal recommendations from friends. THE TAKEAWAY “Definitely check references,” says Engvall, “but it’s nice to also seek referrals from your friends, your planner or other vendors so you have some firsthand accounts of their reputation and service.” It’s also a good idea to ask everyone their preferred method of communication.

I’d be more assertive. The country club that Emily Dean chose for her reception was perfect. Even better, the club had an on-site event planner. “The planner was one reason we booked that venue,” says Dean, who lives in Philadelphia. “But she quit her job two months before our wedding.” A new planner came on board, but she was “totally ➺

ceremony and once during the reception to do a quick retouch.”

I’d reapply my lipstick. “It’s a little thing that still drives me crazy: I never reapplied lipstick after the ceremony!” says Madeleine Chenot Pennington, who hosted a vintage-Hollywood bash in Waco, TX. “Now, when I look back at pictures, my un-glossed lips are all I see.” THE TAKEAWAY Bare lips, shiny foreheads, smeared mascara—makeup mishaps are all too common, says LaesserKeck. “The day is just going to fly by and it’s natural for brides to forget about this detail.” She suggests handing your maid of honor a small pouch that contains your lipstick and some blotting papers, a stain removing wipe, and a dryer sheet to handle static. “Ask her to remind you after the

‘‘

I’d start my honeymoon two days later. In the interest of saving time, Kilpatrick and her new husband hired a limo to gather them from their reception at 3 a.m. for an early morning flight to Jamaica. “Big mistake,” she says. “It felt like we missed an entire day because we were so exhausted.” THE TAKEAWAY Besides needing some rest, Engvall says it’s worth delaying your travels for a day or two to have some quiet time to unwind and spend more time with parents or other close family members. “Most couples appreciate not having to think about packing for a big vacation while they’re also worrying about everything that needs to get done for the wedding.” 

A FINAL THOUGHT There’s always going to be one thing that’s not completely perfect,” says Alison Bryan’s Laesser-Keck. “But that doesn’t mean that the decision you made was bad. So rather than get stuck on that one thing, just let it go and remember how amazing the day was. You’ll look back and you won’t have any regrets.

PHOTOGRAPHY: DANA GRANT

I’d DIY in advance. Having worked in the catering business, Sarah Kilpatrick had a firm grasp of what’s needed to pull off a smooth reception for 350 guests. She carried this organizational style over to other aspects of her wedding, which took place in Wheeling, WV, working closely with several vendors. Two things she did decide to DIY though, were creating the ceremony programs and crafting ribbon wands. “The final week before our wedding was pretty stress free, thanks to my many check-off lists,” says Kilpatrick. “But knowing that I had to get so many wands made and also put together the programs is something I wish I’d gotten out of the way sooner.” THE TAKEAWAY DIY-ing favors or other decor elements can help save money, says

Laesser-Keck. But adjust your timeline so that everything’s ready to go a couple of weeks in advance. “And definitely enlist the help of close friends and family members. Handmade touches are wonderful, but be realistic about what you can pull off,” she says. “You want those days leading up to your wedding to be easy.”

‘‘

overwhelmed,” as the club had started a big construction project. Dean found herself stepping in to press the management to clean up areas she’d been promised for the reception. “I still get peeved when I see the machines and mess in the background of our photos,” she says. THE TAKEAWAY On-site planners do shoulder a lot of the reception details, streamlining the process for many couples, but keep in mind that you’re signing a contract with the venue and not the planner, says Engvall. To give you more peace of mind, make sure you’re meeting with the person who’ll be on duty the day of your reception, pose a few “what-if ” scenarios (including any future on-site renovations) and make sure you’re comfortable with their answers. And definitely read the fine print in all of your contracts before signing.

I’d give the photographer more direction. A pale pucker isn’t the only thing Chenot Pennington would re-do. She also wishes she’d prepared a shot list for her photographer. “I absolutely loved my photographer, but so many pictures from the ceremony were taken from a balcony when I was hoping for more close-up shots,” THE TAKEAWAY “A photographer doesn’t know what a bride wants unless the bride tells her,” says wedding photographer Laura Yang. That’s where a detailed shot list comes in. Keep in mind that lighting and setting also play a role. “If a bride loves the sun-splashed, airy images she saw on her photographer’s site she can’t plan her own wedding inside a dark hotel ballroom and expect her photographer to produce the same look,” Yang says.

for the day of the wedding. Guests who are stuck at the airport or lost en route to the ceremony site should be able to ask someone for assistance—but that someone should not be you. “Guests don’t want to bother the bride while she’s getting her hair done, but they might not have anyone else’s HINT: number,” says California-based Set aside time alone wedding planner Melody Walker. (or with your fiancé) to decompress with a “Ask your wedding planner or few gentle, basic one of your bridesmaids to field yoga techniques. last-minute texts and calls.” You Namaste... need to stay focused and calm (and so does your hairstylist!). ASK YOUR LOVED ONES to share stories of their wedding disasters. Bride tripped halfway down the aisle? Flower girl brawled with the ring bearer? Everyone has a tale to tell, because something tends to go wrong at nearly every wedding. Listening to these anecdotes helps you keep your sense of humor and reminds you that these little mishaps make the memories you’ll share with your grandchildren someday. AGREE ON A “SAFE WORD” for stay-calm family gatherings. Make a plan with your groom before the guests arrive. Then, if you’re cornered by his crazy Uncle Gus and subjected to a political rant, you can simply turn to your beloved, murmur “licorice,” and wait for his extraction team to come to your rescue. GO BACK THROUGH your emails and texts and re-read the messages you and your fiancé sent to each other when you started dating. Remember why you fell in love and dream about the future. And while you’re at it, send him a little love note to remind him that you’re thrilled to be his bride. DON’T GO NUTS—EAT THEM! “Plan to have some protein available in the bridal party’s dressing room,” suggests Walker. She recommends prepping for your walk down the aisle with light snacks that are healthful, filling and non-staining, such as string cheese and raw almonds or cashews. MAKE ARRANGEMENTS to spend the night before the wedding at a hotel near your venue. This gives you a chance to have some much-needed alone time on the morning before the ceremony. A little bit of solitude will make the upcoming celebration that much sweeter. HOP INTO A BUBBLE BATH with a book. The warm water will soothe the aches after all those hours in high heels, and a novel offers a mental mini-vacation. Read only the first few chapters and save the rest for the plane ride to your honeymoon destination.

SANITY SAVERS

A

mid the whirlwind of those seemingly endless lastminute preparations, take time to relax and reflect on what matters most: friends, family, and of course, fun! Whether it’s a moment of Zen by your lonesome or happy hour with the girls, every bride needs a few strategies to step out of the spotlight and enjoy the moment.

1.

LOAD UP YOUR IPOD with a “Wedding Countdown” playlist to keep you energized and positive. Think of this as your emotional pacifier—it’s basically impossible to be in a bad mood while lip-syncing to “Uptown Funk.” If all else fails, break out the heavy artillery: ABBA and old-school Britney Spears. SET ASIDE FIVE MINUTES every day for some “lite yoga.” Minneapolis-based yoga instructor Catherine Justice recommends the following visualization exercise: Sit cross-legged on the floor with your back against a wall in a cool, quiet room. Send out kind thoughts to someone you love deeply, someone you’re having conflict or emotional difficulty with—and yourself. “Your wedding is exciting, but it’s also stressful,” Catherine says. “While you’re trying to accommodate everyone else’s needs, remember to also take care of yourself.” “WINE DOWN” WITH YOUR BFFS. Hit the local wine shop and stock up on vino with whimsical labels. Suggestions: True Love Riesling, Bliss Chardonnay, or Princess Moscato. (If you’re feeling feisty, try Wit’s End Shiraz!)

1

Create a comparison chart to track what’s included in the price for each venue you’re considering. One company may not include linens and the cake, for example, while another company does. Many public spaces, like parks or the local village green, may be available to rent at a low fee. However, if the space is not equipped to handle events, you’ll have to rent everything from napkins to tables and chairs. Before deciding, make sure you come out ahead. Choose an unusual venue, such as a zoo, a gallery or a historical site. You’ll save on decor because the venue already supplies ambience. But the same caveat goes as for public spaces: Factor in

11

For a garden wedding, explore

renting a historic mansion; many of these have gardens that are included as part of the deal. You may find, as did one couple, that the mansion they rented had no time limit, and the fee was less than half a traditional wedding hall rental.

12

Look for reception packages.

Choosing to hold your event at a venue that provides catering and foodservice items will save you quite a bit of money on rentals.

inexpensive (nonalcoholic) drinks. Consider fresh lemonade in tall, sugarrimmed glasses for a warm-weather wedding or sparkling water with wedges of orange, lemon or lime. Choose mid-shelf liquors for significant savings. Another way to approach this: If the best brands are important to you, indulge guests with just a few choices of these but close the bar early and offer just wine and beer as the party winds down.

26

For an added festive touch,

dress up your signature drinks with colorful, attractive garnishes, like curled lemon and lime peels, orange slices or mini fruit kebabs on toothpicks. Garnishes are usually provided free of charge by the venue or caterer.

music notes

32

Want a live band? Hire tal-

ented students from a local music school to perform at the ceremony. Ask to hear them play—they may be just as good as professionals, and charge you less. Be sure to stay local: If a band has to travel for more than an hour, your costs will increase. If you’re deciding whether to go with a five-piece band or a DJ, you’ll save at least half by choosing the DJ. Or, why not be your own DJ? Download your favorite music and create playlists for the ceremony and the reception

33

on your iPhone. Put a willing techie pal in charge of it, then hook it up to rented speakers and enjoy!

34

Negotiate a deal that you like. The closer you are to the

wedding date (six months or less), the likelier it is that the band leader will work on your terms. Find out if one or two musicians can perform for the ceremony or cocktail hour as well. If your band has a singer who also plays an instrument, you’ll save money. And remember: You don’t need more than one of each instrument. ➺

35

39

Have a small cake for the

cake-cutting ceremony and supplement it with a less costly sheet cake, served from the kitchen. Go with fresh flowers. The labor that goes into creating flowers out of sugar ups the price of the cake. If you like fruit fillings, think seasonal. Strawberries can cost three times as much when served out of season. If your baker charges more for multiple cake or filling flavors, limit yourself to your favorite.

40 41

36

The traditional wedding cake is

covered with fondant; however, it’s expensive because it requires extra labor to make. Consider buttercream instead. One caveat: For an outdoor wedding, go with fondant since buttercream will melt in the sun. Consider cupcakes. These save money because they require less intricate decoration.

37 38

Don't rule out your humble

local grocery store. One bride’s supermarket bakery made her an elegant confection, based on a magazine photo, for less than $200.

42

The baker may instead

calculate the price by averaging the cost of different flavors, so plan carefully. If you have the most expensive flavor on the bottom layer (the biggest), it may likely cost more.

43

Traditionally, couples save

the cake’s top layer to share on their first anniversary. If you and your fiancé aren't interested, forgo the extra layer and save some dough. Have a dessert buffet. Mini pastries and other tiny sweets are crowd-pleasers. Save money by having a small cake for your cake cutting.

Or use fruits and vegetables in arrangements; this way, you can create a sense of colorful abundance without the excessive cost.

65

If you're tying the knot in winter, springtime blooms will cost

you a pretty penny. A florist can suggest in-season blooms that get the look and feel of your out-of-season favorites.

66

If your wedding day happens

to fall on Easter, Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day, you may pay more for your blooms. On the other hand, scheduling a wedding around a holiday can work in your favor: Your reception spot may be decked out—saving you a fortune! Less is more. “I

see our newest line as an evolution,” says Hervé Moreau, artistic director of Pronovias. With headquarters based in Barcelona and designs made exclusively in-house, the company takes pride in upholding traditional dressmaking techniques while continuously innovating on the fabric and design front. Every gown is handcrafted down to the last detail. “The methods we use to create custom patterns are what make our designs unique,” Moreau says. The 2020 collection explores new patterns, textiles and colors. Focusing on movement, the Atelier team opted for textured fabrics that would allow for more comfort and less weight. “We develop materials exclusively for our Atelier Pronovias line,” Moreau tells us— including unexpected sparkle or subtle sheen using metallic yarns. And luxurious new laces—a brand staple—abound. But before the fabrics are made, the process begins with a sketch, notes Moreau. “The silhouette in my mind gets on paper and the details are added one by one so that the stylists and patternmakers understand the vision.” From there, patterns are developed and toiles (a test garment in muslin) are created. The design team reviews each sample and discusses any necessary adjustments. “This is where the piece comes to life,” says Moreau. Once completed, the design and silhouette of each toile is checked against the original sketch. “The craftswomen begin to cut and sew the dress,” Moreau says. The intricacies of placing appliqués (something Hervé has an innate talent for) and hand-beading are the final steps in the construction of a truly breathtaking Pronovias gown.

REAL COUPLES

Lovers Pea Patty and Jason tied the knot with a cozy autumn wedding tucked away in the Colorado mountains. PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISA O’DWYER PHOTOGRAPHY

The newlyweds were all smiles in front of the verdant Colorado landscape.

D

uring a weekend getaway to Park City, Utah, Jason popped the question in front of a hill with large signage “PC” for Park City, or in their case the future “Patty Clark.” The Miami residents spent the next year planning their ideal fall wedding. They chose Beaver Creek, Colorado, as their bigday location since the bride grew up visiting the resort village with her family, making it a sentimental spot to create even more loving memories. Beano’s Cabin, a secluded, luxurious restaurant nestled in the mountains, was the site for the rustic-styled ceremony and reception. “The venue offered a spectacular backdrop, an intimate setting and wonderful food,” Patty says. The picturesque alpine landscape was inspiration for the event’s overall organic decor and earthy greenery in hopes of bringing the outdoors inside. To honor the region’s ancestral history, the newlyweds also included Native American-themed elements in their celebration. For example, their wedding officiant, who has familial ties to the Navajo tribe, incorporated unique traditions, like playing his Native American flute at the beginning of the ceremony. Dinner took place inside Beano’s Cabin while a connected tent enclosed the dance floor. Patty said, “The love and positivity was truly palpable during each and every moment of the celebration, which quite simply made for one of the best days of our lives.” — Kate Watson

Escort cards were displayed on strands of twine mounted on vintage picture frames. 3. A tart seasonal fruit chutney accompanied the fresh-baked baguettes. 4. Family and friends snacked on artisanal goat cheese paired with apple slices and bread crisps. 5. Beverages were served at a dark wooden bar decorated with ivory blooms and a lush garland.

Favorite Moments • Close friends of the newlyweds surprised the pair at the reception with a Miami-Cuban tradition called “Hora Loca,” or Crazy Hour, which consisted of them emerging onto the dance floor with maracas, headpieces and blow-up guitars while dancing to their favorite songs. • A guitarist played the Beatles’ “Hey Jude” during dinner, while the bride’s father led the crowd in song. • The first snowfall of the year threatened Patty and Jason’s special day, but the inclement weather miraculously halted at precisely the right time for the start of the wedding.

Personal Touches

• Upon arriving at Beaver Creek, family and friends received Colorado-themed welcome bags with Boulder Canyon Chips and evergreen candles. “High-altitude kits” of Chapstick, Advil and sunscreen were also included to acclimate guests to the locale. • The cake was served on a log slice engraved with the couple’s initials and wedding date, which they kept as a memento of their special day. 3

White roses and sprouted greens potted in wooden logs made for elegant, nature-inspired centerpieces at each dinner table. 3. Minimalist ivory linens, bouquets of greenery and twinkling candles set a romantic tone throughout the celebratory setting.

Check in to some of the world’s most spectacular suites, experience the tranquility of two very different yet equally untouched islands and sneak a peek at one of the best hotels in Paris. In the Caribbean, get the heart pumping with thrilling adventures, or just kick back and chill. Plus, how to order your most memorable meal and where to wed in the Green Mountain State.

Live the high life in some of the most spectacular hotel rooms in the world. by Jenna Mahoney

Post Ranch Inn The epic landscape of California’s Big Sur is on jaw-dropping display at this ultimate adults-only hideaway built into a mountainous expanse among NoCal’s famous towering trees overlooking the mighty Pacific Ocean. Home to a single private villa and 39 guest rooms crafted from indigenous woods, Post Ranch Inn A romantic treehouse. defined Zen rustic chic before the concept exploded across the globe. While it’s difficult to choose just one standout, the triangular treehouses with their private decks, fireplaces and perfect-for-stargazing skylights may claim the title of most romantic (room rates start at $875 a night and include breakfast and most activities; postranchinn.com).

It would be understandable if upon check-in at this Australian property you thought you’d arrived at another world—one where the sky is so expansive that the impressive natural surroundings somehow seem dwarfed, and where the accommodations are fully transparent round capsules. Here, a trio of distinct structures is positioned on a 1,000-acre working farm overlooking the world’s secondlargest canyon. Each encapsulates one bedroom, an en suite bathroom and an oversize deck complete with telescope. Named for constellations, the accommodations are blissfully set apart from one another to afford the utmost privacy as well as unique views (room rates start at about $263 a night; bubbletentaustralia.com).

LADERA RESORT The twin Pitons of St. Lucia are so emblematic of the Caribbean island that their images are emblazoned on the national flag and local beer. And showcasing the peaks’ majestic beauty is at the heart of this resort, a selection of just 37 rooms spread over a portion of the Rabot Estate, one of the region’s oldest cocoa farms. Each of the retreats at this hideaway boasts an open fourth wall that frames cinematic views of the Pitons and the Caribbean Sea below. All rooms come equipped with private pools and swings built for two (room rates start at $700 a night and include breakfast and roundtrip airport transfers; ladera.com).

Amangiri

Overlooking the Pitons.

Deep in the craggy desert of Utah, at the base of towering red rock plateaus sits this oasis of pampering. An homage to the traditions and customs of the area’s native peoples, the Navajo, the intimate retreat showcases wellness and service in a setting that is nothing short of spectacular. Amangiri is composed of a collection of haute suites and equally luxe, independently owned villas. Check into the eponymous suite for sweeping views of the fantastical surroundings. They are afforded from the guest room’s enormous sun deck fashioned from adobe-like stone, private plunge pool and personal sky terrace AKA roof deck (room rates start at about $1,400 a night; aman.com).

EDITOR’S TIPS

MENU MATTERS Talk like a top chef with these hot-in-the-kitchen food terms. by Jenna Mahoney

F

ood trucks, cooking shows and celebrity chefs are as common to gastronomy-loving travelers these days as burgers and fries. But for those of us who aren’t so hip to the nose-to-tail jargon, ordering at a fancy resort restaurant can be a bit—dare I say— stomach turning. Since I’m more of a comfort-food girl myself (did someone say French fries?), I got a few top chefs to dish on getting the best meal on your honeymoon.

IN THE FAMILY

LOOK AROUND

SKIP IT

If you’re anything like me, you focus on the girl in the cutest outfit at the store and scope out what she’s got in her hands. Then you head straight for the rack that offers her selection. The same approach works at restaurants, says James. Look around the dining room and see what other patrons are savoring. And feel free to ask. I was approached by a fellow diner at Jaleo, a Spanish restaurant helmed by superstar chef José

While I’d never advocate avoiding ramps (a delicious leek-like veggie that’s fresh in the early spring), because you’re unfamiliar with the taste, there are some meal selections that the chefs prefer to skip. “Avoid overcomplicated dishes with too many ingredients,” advises James. “And don’t immediately jump for the most expensive item. It may not be the best-tasting one,” says von Wieser. 

My mother always says: “Don’t order ethnic food in a pub.” She insists that burritos and lasagna do not belong on HINT: the same menu. The chefs I talked to agree: “When Nose-to-tail cuisine often refers to trying a new eatery, I generally order traditional and sustainable practices, familiar dishes from that type of restaurant,” says in which the chef uses Andrés, in Las Vegas. N

ot only does Vermont guarantee a gorgeous backdrop for your wedding, but the Green Mountain State was also among the first to legalize same-sex marriage—back in 2009. And Vermont’s open embrace of love is seasonless: Its tranquil landscapes are soothing in spring and summer, its brilliant mosaic of foliage captivates the eye in autumn, and its cozy fireplaces and covered bridges warm the soul in winter.

Perhaps this grand 250-year-old inn-turned-resort will speak to you—as it did to First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln, who stayed here in 1864. Located in Manchester village, positioned directly in front of Mt. Equinox, the 195-room property is known for its striking white columns and a 14-acre site called Equinox Pond. It’s home to the Pond Pavilion, a venue that’s a favorite summer ceremony site and can accommodate up to 120 people for a reception. The historic retreat’s light-filled and refined indoor venues include the Colonnade Ballroom (for up to 180 guests) and the larger Rockwell Ballroom (up to 200 guests), which features an adjacent patio perfect for cocktail hour in warmer weather. Menus are customizable and highlight local ingredients (weddings start at $3,500 for facility fees. Food minimums start at $100 per person and the bar minimum is $63 per person; equinoxresort.com).

love it so much, I’m not going to write about it.” That’s a phrase that travel editors whisper to themselves when they discover a spot that is so special, so quiet and just so perfect that a simple mention of its existence to others may mar the destination’s unique appeal. For decades, that statement slipped out over cocktails, during transatlantic flights or press gatherings about a spit of sand located off the northern coast of Quintana Roo, the Mexican state that’s home to Cancun and the Riviera Maya. And from those mentions and the occasionally shared photo, Isla Holbox, an island of fewer than 2,000 inhabitants, moved to the top of my travel list. I’m not alone—in the past year the 26-mile-long island that’s just a mile and a half across has hit TRAVEL TIP: the must-see docket of nearly every top travel Transportation on writer. And its pristine beaches have been spied Holbox is limited on Instagram accounts from fashion influencers to bike rentals and to happy honeymooners. Although the secret golf-cart taxis (there is out, the sun-drenched spot has maintained are no cars). Arrange its elusive charm that kept it hidden for so long. Here’s what I did—and more importantly didn’t on-off island transfers do—on a recent visit. prior to arrival, as fer-

ry service doesn’t run 24 hours. Book with STP for roundtrip help from the airport.

My ultimate travel peeve is when I check into a hotel and someone says “welcome home.” It isn’t my house, which is part of the reason why it is so fun to stay there. But checking into Punta Caliza does sort of feel like you’ve arrived at a place so welcoming that it can only be equated with home, a super-chic high-design home, but one nonetheless. The main reason is that the 12room hideaway is helmed by a family of artists and designers. A brother and sister team run the day-to-day operations and much of the staff is family or childhood friends, as is the case with the property’s chef. And it seems as though they all know your name, your preferred way to take EARLY BIRDS coffee and your hometown within minutes of A breakfast spot in town. arrival. All guest rooms, which are constructed of cedar from the family’s farm, have direct access to the pretty pool. Spa services can be arranged in-room or under the palapa on the beach, and experiences like tequila tastings are offered by request, which really means on demand (room rates start at about $270 a night and include breakfast; puntacaliza.com). ➺

TRAVEL INSIDER SUITE DREAMS One of the chic guest rooms.

SUN, SAND, SEA, REPEAT The marquee attraction of Isla Holbox is its lack of offerings. There are no large hotels nor is there a boisterous bar scene, and the island is famous for not having paved roads. The vibe here is barefoot and dressed-down with lazing on the beach, strolling the sandy “streets” or biking to the mangrove preserve being popular activities. Here lunches are long, lingering affairs that most often happen on the sand. Then it’s off to sway in hammocks that hover over the crystalline waters. Those looking for a bit more to do walk to the far end of the island to explore Mosquito Beach. The protected expanse is a mangrove wonder filled with all manner of bird life and yes, plenty of mosquitoes. A handful of tour operators, offering snorkeling and swimming with whale sharks, sit on a street at the base of the town plaza.

SUNDOWNERS

NIGHT LIGHTS Once the sun sets, the entirety of the island (with the exception of the main plaza and its surrounding streets) is enveloped in complete darkness. Offshore, however, is another story. The waters become aglow with the phenomenon called bioluminescence, the emission of light from marine invertebrates. Outfitters lead private kayak tours to discover the aqua fireflies. Note: Although it can be spied all year, some seasons are more impressive than others, and weather can impact sightings. Ask about visibility before booking. 

DEEP DIVE Just another beautiful view.

TRAVEL TIP: Since you’ll be essentially stepping back in time, you’ll need to bring Mexican cash. Not many places accept credit cards and the single ATM in town has been known to run out of money. There is an exchange office on the plaza. CHEERS A typical island snack, lunch or dinner.

PHOTOGRAPHY: (FROM TOP) CÉSAR BÉJAR STUDIO; JENNA MAHONEY (2); CÉSAR BÉJAR STUDIO (2)

As is common in beach destinations, sunset on this tiny island is an event. Folks flock to the Hotel Zone beaches and rooftop bars to take in the evening spectacular and toast the close of a perfect beach day with a chilled mezcal. Los Nubes, set on the edge of the dense mangrove expanse, is hands-down the best perch from which to enjoy the natural show. The restaurant at this palaparoofed property juts over the Caribbean Sea, affording unbeatable vistas of the water and Holbox itself. Stay for dinner and savor fresh seafood in traditional Yucatan presentations.

AHOY The arrival dock.

Fogo Island For romantics with a penchant for the wild, Canada’s Fogo Island delivers an experience no other destination can replicate. With seven self-proclaimed seasons that range from “hopeful spring” and “berry picking” to “emotional autumn,” this remote island, part of Newfoundland, lets nature lead. From harbors to glittery lakes, craggy cliffs and rugged beaches, berry patches and bogs, colorful villages and a centuries-old fishing culture, Fogo is the perfect escape. —Becca Hensley Ice, ice baby.

A seemingly endless warren of wellworn trails spiral around Fogo, which equals Manhattan in size. To immerse in the island’s gravitas, hike as many as possible. Try Brimstone Head, an uphill trek, which leads to a pinnacle that sports bird’s-eye views. Look for saltbox houses, caribou, icebergs and ships at sea in the panorama.

TRAVEL TIP: It’s the destination, not

the journey, in the case of Fogo Island, which requires several flights, a drive and a boat ride, no matter from where you hail. As Newfoundland’s largest offshore island, it lies north of both Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.

ART COLONY

The majestic Dining Room at Fogo Island Inn.

FOOD HALL Few gourmands miss a chance to savor the epic views and cuisine at the Dining Room at the Fogo Island Inn, where executive chef Jonathan Gushue creates a menu according to Fogo’s seven seasons. Meals may feature the region’s famous cold-water, hand-line caught cod, or apples gathered from an island orchard. But when casual mealtime calls, cuddle up in Bangbelly, a cozy nook meant for community. Equally Fogocentric, the locavore cafe turns out stellar salads, sandwiches and pastries—all with a local twist.

Art lovers will find plenty of shopping inspiration on Fogo, where creators come to spur their muse. With a hearty artist-in-residence program and a colony of established craftspeople at work, Fogo offers a slew of galleries to peruse. Purchase quilts at Herring Cove Art Gallery and Studio and hand-carved furniture (plus utensils and woven goods) at Wood Shop of Fogo Island.

Classic Fogo Island.

It looks a bit like the bones of a shipwrecked craft, poised amid megalithic rocks above the sea. On stilts, stylishly stark Fogo Island Inn pairs with Fogo’s expansive horizon line for dramatic effect. Designed by locally born architect Todd Saunders, the all-inclusive hotel manages to feel part of the terrain. Envisioned to exude the spirit of Fogo’s forested quietude, the contemporary lodge with 29 unique rooms has wall-to-wall windows to showcase the views, a cinema, library and an epicurean’s bucket-list restaurant. Included activities range from stargazing and hiking to fishing and berry picking (room rates start at about $1,485 a night and are all inclusive; fogoislandinn.ca).

YOU WANT TO GO ALL-IN, HE WANTS TO DROP OUT. ON THESE AWESOME CARIBBEAN ISLANDS YOU CAN DO AS MUCH OR AS LITTLE AS YOU LIKE. BY CARRIE BELL

W

hether your idea of a perfect post-hitched tropical island holiday includes R&R—rum punch and relaxation—on repeat, or non-stop activities that make the heart race and the adrenaline spike or a combo of both, these tropical hot spots have you covered. Even the hotels can feel like two different honeymoons for the price of one. Are you ready to get your heart pumping or set it aflutter? Here’s where to book.

PHOTOGRAPHY: SUNSET AT THE PALMS

ARUBA Sometimes big things come in small packages. Such is the case with Aruba, a Dutch isle home to pristine miles of stunning beach, 90 nationalities, 300 restaurants and at least seven pink flamingos. The northern coast boasts towering limestone cliffs. And the interior is home to a sprawling desert expanse. The waters are also the final resting place of the Antilla, the Caribbean’s largest shipwreck and a prime dive spot. THRILL: Take the wheel of an all-terrain vehicle, feel the wind in your hair and make everyone eat your dust when you go all fast and furious on a De Palm Tours off-road adventure on the

cactus-filled desert side of Aruba. Stop long enough to plunge into natural pools, scramble over rock formations and visit a historic chapel and mill ruins. CHILL: Lather on the Aruba Aloe, grown and made on island, and ease any discomfort lounging in the Caribbean sun may have caused. Eat a subdued supper while almost horizontal at Screaming Eagle, where booths are actually platform beds and the lobster bisque comes on a TV tray. STAY: Continue with dessert at the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino on Palm Beach. Grab a scoop at Gelato & Co to enjoy in one of the hanging pods in the courtyard or in a cabana at the adults-only pool. Nothing elevates the pulse ➺

CARIBBEAN

Sporting events draw large crowds to the islands. Of course, regattas and fishing tournaments are popular. However, among the British isles seeing cricket games is in demand. The golden sands of Spice Island Beach Resort, Grenada.

like laying your own money on the line. Try your luck at the sparkling Stellaris Casino, which features 500 slot machines and 32 gaming tables (room rates start at $550 a night; arubamarriott).

GRENADA As is common in the Caribbean, Grenada has a mountainous middle that gives way to hilly rainforest reserves peppered with waterfalls and plantations (many still produce cocoa and nutmeg), pristine coastlines dotted with sea grapes and clear waters filled with a wide variety of reefs and boat carnage, all teeming with kaleidoscopic fish. THRILL: Spin, swirl and shoot whitewater rapids on the bumpy Balthazar with Adventure River Tubing, started by a group of 10 local dudes who will instigate a cannonball contest mid-float if the current gets too serene. CHILL: The nutmeg island offers laid-back options by land or sea. Snorkeling in Molinere Bay with Dive Grenada is like combining a day at a museum with an aquarium, as an evermorphing underwater sculpture park with 14 installations by artist Jason deCaires Taylor chronicling the country’s history reside there.

Sweet dreams at Spice Island Beach Resort.

STAY: The new open-air yoga pavilion is one more reason to nama-stay at the postcard-perfect Spice Island Beach Resort. Go with the flow during a private couples session while gazing at the aquamarine water and sugary white sand of Grand Anse Beach. Cool down in your private plunge pool after a rousing round of included golf (room rates start at $1,400 a night and are all inclusive; spiceislandbeachresort.com).

JAMAICA The land of one love is home to tasty jerk chicken, rich Blue Mountain coffee and natural attractions including limestone caves and blue lagoons, all set to a homegrown and ever-present reggae soundtrack. THRILL: Lots of places have cliff-diving locals or shows, but very few encourage visitors to take the extreme plunge. At Rick’s Café in Negril—a seaside institution serving stiff drinks, live bands and citrusy sunsets daily—slip on a swimsuit, set aside your fear of heights and leap from two platforms (one high; the other even higher) into the refreshing cove far below while hundreds of patrons cheer. ery’s shiny new Nassau Valley visitor’s center gives pairs who like to partake a good excuse to day drink—it’s educational. After a welcome sip and before a tasting, the interactive tour walks participants through the brand’s creation in 1749 (and hiring of the first female master blender in the world) and the rummaking process from farming sugarcane to barrel aging. STAY: Answer the call of the wild at Sunset at the Palms Resort by brunching with the resident family of goats. Feed them fresh greens until it’s time for them to go to work as lawnmowers around the treehouse-style bungalows while you indulge in copious servings of the resort’s legendary bacon. Catamaran trips that launch from the beach go from tame to cheeky (literally!) when you round the bend past the clothingoptional neighbor Hedonism (room rates start at $299 a night and are all inclusive; thepalmsjamaica.com).

ST. LUCIA This West Indian wonderland is packed with pretty—imagine waterfalls, stunning panoramas, vibrant flowers, rock formations and luxurious resorts—and pretty exciting, boasting the world’s only drive-in volcano surrounded by bubbling mud baths.

Riding dune buggies across Aruba.

THRILL: With dozens of trails over a variety of elevations, the island is a paradise for hikers. Aim to summit both of the most iconic, Gros Piton and Petit Piton. Most can manage Gros, but take to Petit if you want a true challenge that involves no marked trailheads, primitive fixed ropes and steeper ascents. Despite being the smaller of the two, Petit also rewards with a more spectacular view. Have a need for speed? Zipline down hills and over lush canopies with Rain Forest Sky Ride. CHILL: If that sounds a bit too precarious or strenuous, instead enjoy the Pitons while off your feet through a treatment room window at Hotel Chocolat’s spa, where locally made healing lotions featuring antioxidant-loaded cacao beans and other farm-fresh ingredients are used in facials, wraps and massages. STAY: Marigot Bay Resort & Marina is quite literally the safest port in the storm as it sits in a scenic Hurricane Hole (area for tying off boats in a storm) protected from choppy waves and strong winds. But if you crave a more active aquatic playground, order a change of scenery off the beach menu, basically a passport to other prominent patches of sand. Fire dancers turn up the heat at the barbeque and the dauntless can see how low they can go during the limbo portion (room rates start at $292 a night; marigotbayresort.com). ¢

THE OPEN ROAD ENHANCE YOUR CLASSIC—AND ROMANTIC—ROAD TRIP HONEYMOON WITH THESE UNEXPECTED AMENITIES. BY BECCA HENSLEY

Take to the highway for the most romantic adventure of your life. No rules, just a GPS, and wheels turning in the right direction. Go ahead. Hit the gas. As the adage goes: It’s the journey, not the destination. And on these amazing road trips with a twist—think being limo-ed or hopping on the back of a bike—you’ll enjoy it all.

FUN FACT: THE STORY OF TRAVELING TOWARD SELF DISCOVERY GOES BACK TO CLASSIC GREECE. THE ODYSSEY, THE WESTERN WORLD'S SECOND OLDEST TEXT, IS AN EPIC THAT DEFINES THE OUTWARD VOYAGE IN TANDEM WITH THE INWARD JOURNEY.

CLASSIC CAR: ITALY AND FRANCE Like characters in a Fellini film, in your 1960s convertible, scarves dancing in the wind, you’ll breeze down back roads stopping to admire fields of sunflowers, ocean views, vineyards and tiny villages in southern France and northern Italy. Picnic packed, begin the trek in France at Four Seasons Grand Hotel Cap du Ferrat, a history-filled grande dame on the sea. Stop for a quick dip amid the waves, and lunch beachside. Continue to Tuscany, its golden light a beacon, to make a rest stop at Four Seasons Hotel Firenze, where you can spend a few days seeing top sights—the Duomo, the gaspworthy David at Accademia Gallery and the Botticelli marvels of the Uffizi Gallery. Next, it’s off to Milan. En route, you can stop in Parma to learn how Parmigiano Reggiano cheese is made, take time for lunch at Michelin-starred Osteria Francescana in Modena, the realm of celebrated chef Massimo Bottura and visit a centuries-old balsamic vinegar factory. At last, arrive at Four Seasons Hotel Milano, a restored convent set in the fashionable city’s swankiest district. Offered by Four Seasons, this fully supported, conciergeplanned vintage car ramble showcases Europe the dolce vita way. Start at any of the three approved hotels, and choose your vehicle—1960 Giulietta Spider; 1958 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL Cabrio or a 1956 Porsche 356A Speedster. P.S. MOTORBIKE: PORTUGAL Portugal, a sliver of land wedged between Spain and the Atlantic Ocean, bears a rich history that include the Celts, Romans and Moors as well as centuries of royalty and a maritime past known as the Age of Discovery. Beloved for its melancholic Fado music, colorful ceramics, fresh seafood and vinho verde, ("green" wine) this lesser-traveled European nation has fascinating cities and sleepy corners alike. Expect to discover medieval castles, quaint villages, vineyards, dramatic beaches, old monasteries and contemporary art museums. With a temperate climate, Portugal draws visitors year-round, though summers in the romantic southern Algarve may feel too crowded for honeymooners seeking alone time. Take it all in via motorcycle organized with the help of Hertz Ride. From Monsaraz, a hilltop town, to the Douro Valley winelands, from Nazare’s surfable beaches to dazzling Lisbon, Portugal is a biker’s dream. Roaring down scenery-edged roads, you’ll feel an endorphin-produced Zen meditative state regular riders extol. Roll along riverbanks, through cork and almond forests and bump over cobblestoned, ancient hamlets. Whether you choose a guided-tour Hertz Ride, or a self-directed spin, you’ll find your top-of-the-line BMW motorbike at the airport, where you’ll also receive a map and a detailed itinerary loaded

CAMPER VAN: AMERICAN SOUTHWEST Nothing says privacy like the two of you discovering the great national parks of the American West in a 22-foot-long, fully kitted-out recreational vehicle. A road trip by camper means quality time, an unhurried pace, the option to control your own schedule, and the thrill of the open highway (or meandering hiking path, as the case may be). Plus, you’ll sing together, gossip, tell jokes, roast marshmallows by a blazing fire, spot wildlife— and maybe fight over directions, only to make up afterwards. Camper life means you only unpack once, can cook your own meals and stop to explore whatever, whenever you want. Book with professional RV vacation organizer Tracks & Trails for a full-service planning and itinerary curation. They’ll guide you away from tourist traps, share their tips and connect you with top outfitters wherever you roam. And you’ll get an expertly penned bespoke itinerary, a top-choice vehicle and scheduled campground reservations. On the evocative 11-night tour, Zion, Bryce, Lake Powell and Grand Canyon, which begins and ends in Las Vegas, you’ll experience some of the United States’ most spectacular natural treasures. Full of jaw-dropping wonder, this trip includes romantic activities such as a sunset jeep tour in Zion, a helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon and stargazing on a private telescope tour at the Dark Ranger Observatory near Bryce Canyon (rates for the 11-night itinerary start at $6,500 and include RV rental, campsites, first night hotel in Las Vegas, and service fee; tracks-trails.com).

LIMO: NORTHEASTERN U.S.A. In the 1950s, Relais & Châteaux’s first hotels emerged along the tracks of the legendary Blue Train, a stretch of road that

went from Paris to the Cote d’ Azur. It was known as the Route du Bonheur—the Road of Happiness—because it delivered frenzied city folk to their long-awaited vacations. The hotels, havens defined by their gastronomic presentations, built their reputation on their kitchens. Today, you needn’t fly to France to experience the haute offerings. Relais & Châteaux, a group of primarily independently owned hotels, peppers the globe, and their standards revolve around gourmet offerings, coddling amenities and proximity to one another. This itinerary in the Northeast U.S.A. is classic in its cuisine and settings. Begin in New York’s Adirondacks on Saranac Lake at The Point, formerly a rural family retreat for the Rockefellers. An intimate Gilded Age waterfront hideaway, the extraordinary inn has only 11 guest suites, all adorned with heirloom art and antiques. All inclusive, The Point excels at offering on-demand treats, such as champagne and truffle popcorn. The nightly Gatsby-style black-tie dinner party is another standout. Follow in the tire tread of bygone bluebloods for the rest of your trip, when a chauffeur-driven limousine transports you to three other extraordinary Relais & Châteaux properties to continue your moveable feast. Enjoy Lake Placid Lodge, an Arts and Crafts marvel set amid pines. Then, it’s off to Vermont for a night each at elegant The Pitcher Inn and bucolic, all-inclusive Twin Farms, ensconced in a 1790s farmhouse (rates for a 4-night itinerary start at $6,960 and include accommodations, limousine transportation and some meals; relaischateaux.com). ¢

GWYNETH PALTROW & BRAD FALCHUK

Want to honeymoon where the celebs do? In each issue, we take a peek at a star-studded hideaway.

hough it first appeared in the mid 1950s, it might be plausible to claim that the word “tastemaker” was invented to describe the mega-hyphenate Gwyneth Paltrow. Jade egg jokes aside, the Oscar-winning actress and fashion icon (it is said her pink Academy Awards gown reignited the popularity of the color) embodies the definition of influencer from wellness to eating. Paltrow is also something of a travel expert—her grid-skipping is said to have been a reason she launched Goop—and she was a co-host of a travel show on PBS. So when GP (as she’s known to friends) Insta-stories her honeymoon suite, you know it is a hotel that is as chic as it is pampering. Following her wedding celebration with producer Brad Falchuk, the couple checked into the storied Four Seasons Hotel George V, just steps from the Champs-Elysées, Arc de Triomphe and Eiffel Tower in Paris. First built in 1928, the Art Deco landmark houses 244 accommodations decorated with classic French furnishings, ornate chandeliers and spectacular tapestries from the 17th century. Check into the penthouse suite à la the taste-making couple for exclusive views of the City of Light’s most iconic monuments from a Classic Paris— sprawling balcony. Among the stellar service and the opulent the inner eating establishments, the flowers are a spectacular hallmark courtyard. of the cosmopolitan hideaway. Helmed by floral artist Jeff Leatham, the program welcomes from 9,000 to 15,000 blooms each week on impressive displays throughout the hotel. Arrangements can also be individually crafted for guest rooms upon request. Another must-reserve is a couple’s experience in the recently launched La Spa (room rates start at about $1,305 a night; fourseasons.com) —Jenna Mahoney
