ANSWERS

A

& Q

Wedding

Straight talk, smart solutions by Mary Clarke, Editor in Chief

Q

Do we need to explain to our ushers where to seat guests for the ceremony or can they just seat them at random?

A

Usually the first few rows are reserved for the bride’s and groom’s immediate families so you’ll need to let your ushers know who those people are and to seat them accordingly. Traditionally, the bride’s parents sit in the first row on the left (facing the ceremony site), along with her grandparents and siblings. If the bride’s parents are divorced and prefer to sit separately, the mother and her husband or partner will sit in the first row while the father and his wife (or partner) sit behind them in the second row. Other special relatives may be seated in the second and third rows. The groom’s family is seated in the same manner, but on the right side. BRIDAL PARTY PRESENTS

Q A

When is the best time to give our attendants their gifts?

Most couples give their gifts to the wedding party at the rehearsal dinner. Following the main course, dessert is served and the toasts begin. Just so you know, it is customary for the best man to start off by toasting the couple, followed by the groom’s father (traditionally the groom’s parents are the hosts of the event). Afterward, you can acknowledge your attendants and give them their gifts. How you do so is entirely up to you. You can keep things lighthearted and fun or be a bit more sentimental. You can make a general announcement and dispense the gifts all at once, or you might want to say something

16 BRIDALGUIDE.COM July/August 2022

special about each member of your wedding party before presenting that person with your memento. Do what feels most natural and comfortable. One couple we know chose to have an intimate bridal-party-only barbecue at their home the day before the rehearsal dinner, and distributed their gifts then. We’re sure your friends will appreciate however you choose to honor them. SAVE-THE-DATE DILEMMA

Q A

Do we need to send out a savethe-date notice to everyone on the guest list?

It depends. We recommend that you send all your guests save-the-dates (six to eight months in advance) if you are planning a destination wedding, marrying on a holiday weekend or even if your celebration will take place at a location that gets booked up early, like a beachfront resort or a hotel near a ski resort. However, if you’re marrying locally but inviting anyone who will need to travel, send save-the-dates to the out-oftowners only, so they can make their arrangements for transportation and accommodations well in advance.

BEAUTY BUDGET

Q

Am I supposed to pay for my bridesmaids to have their hair and makeup professionally done? As much as I’d like to it would be quite costly.

A

You definitely aren’t obligated to pay for their hair and makeup; they can

take care of that on their own. There are some brides who are able to absorb the fees as a thank-you to their attendants, but if your budget is limited—and with costs being as high as they are—don’t feel pressured to take on this additional expense. IN-LAW REQUEST

Q

My fiancé’s sister-in-law wants to be in my wedding party and his mom said it’s proper etiquette to include her. Is this true? I don’t know her well, and have other friends I’d prefer to ask.

A

There is no rule stating that a spouse-to-be’s sister-in-law should be in the wedding party. And don’t feel pressured to ask anyone you’re not close with. She probably wants to be included because your fiancé’s brother (her husband) will be either best man or a groomsman. You can still include her in the wedding by asking her to give a special reading at the ceremony. And make sure your fiancé supports your decision—especially with his mom. ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. And send your planning questions to us at mail@bridalguide.com.

For a gorgeous summer palette, opt for a fresh pop of color and sun protection when possible. To start, first apply (1) Cay Skin Isle Glow Face Moisturizer with SPF 45 and Niacinamide for a glowy, antioxidant-packed, and lightweight base—perfect for your day in the sun. Next, layer on (2) Joah Beauty Air Light Soft Powder Blush in Pink Dahlia to the apples of your cheeks for a vibrant flush. The weightless pigment is easy to

blend and diffuses the look of pores. To get sky-high lashes, swipe on a few coats of (3) MAC Cosmetics M·A·CStack Mascara. The clump-resistant formula is endlessly buildable for brides who love lots of volume. Finish your look with (4) Doucce Luscious Lip Stain in Pink Sky. The base color lasts all day without transferring and comes with a topcoat that will take the finish from matte to glossy for a next-level pout.

SERUMS

SMOOTH OPERATORS

HYDRATING Vichy LiftActiv Peptide-C Ampoule Serum

Here’s your facial serum 101 guide—all your questions answered with our expert tips and tricks. What is a serum and how does it differ from a moisturizer? “Serum formulas tend to be lighter,” says Yesica Ordonez, aesthetician at Spa Pechanga in Temecula, California. “And serums contain higher concentrations of active ingredients.” Serums are less occlusive than moisturizers, adds Dr. Jennifer Chwalek of Union Square Laser Dermatology in New York City. “This allows the active ingredients to penetrate deeply into the skin. Moisturizers are thicker, formulated to hydrate, protect and restore the skin’s barrier function.”

How do I choose the right serum? It depends on your concern, says Dennis Gross, M.D., of Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare in New York City. “Retinol is the gold standard for treating fine lines as it helps increase cellular turnover, which slows down in your midtwenties,” he says. “If dark spots have you worried, seek out products with vitamin C, or look for alpha and beta hydroxy acids—also known as AHAs and

ACNE PREVENTING Sunday Riley Good Genes AllIn-One Lactic Acid Treatment

BHAs—that gently exfoliate to prevent acne. Lastly, if hydration is a concern, look to hyaluronic acid for its ability to help skin retain moisture.” Aesthetician Vicki Morav, of New York City’s Galerie Aesthetique says, “Different serums address concerns for specific skin conditions based on their ingredients. Benefits vary from resurfacing, purifying, plumping, and protecting skin to much more.”

Where does a serum fall in my skincare regimen? The basic drill is cleanser, serum, then moisturizer. The point is to apply serum to freshly cleansed skin, finishing with moisturizer. Keep in mind the difference between day and night serums as well. “Day serums typically contain ingredients that can help to repair sun and environmental damage, while also being lighter to help with layering products,” says Dr. Naissan Wesley, a dermatologist based in Los Angeles, California. “Night serums tend to be more hydrating to improve moisturization while we sleep.”

What’s the best way to apply a serum? Los Angeles-based aesthetician Alexandra Wagner, owner of Alexandra Wagner Skincare, suggests gently dabbing serum into freshly cleansed skin. “Lightly press two pumps worth into your face, neck and décolletage with fingers,” she says. After applying you can also use skincare tools to stimulate circulation. “My favorite are Biologique Recherche Cryo Sticks,” says Morav. “I keep them in the freezer to use while they’re cold. Their cooling effect helps the serum’s absorption and efficiency.”

How long does it take to see a difference in my skin after starting a new serum? Between eight to 10 weeks, say our experts. “After a few weeks you should see a difference in your skin,” says Wagner. “If you are working on balancing pigmentation or see a lessening of brown spots, this can take a bit longer, just be patient. Consistency assures a successful outcome.”

Dress Shopping in

PHOTOGRAPHY: SHELBY COOK POWELL PHOTOGRAPHY; BRIDESMAID DRESSES: THE DESSY GROUP

Congrats, you’re engaged! You’ve probably been dreaming of this day for a long time—with good reason! There’s no greater feeling than trying on a wedding gown and seeing yourself as a bride for the very first time. While wedding gown shopping in 2022 may look a little different, the experience can still feel just as special as it would have pre-pandemic. Read on for some tips!

Shop at Your Local Bridal Salon

Bridal salons offer the largest selection of reputable designers, styles, and colors. Your consultant will work directly with the designer to ensure everything from the color, to the fabric and the fit, are exactly what you envision. Not to mention, when you buy from a trusted, local bridal salon, you not only support your community, but also small businesses mostly owned by women!

Communicate With Your Consultant

A bridal consultant cannot read your mind, so be vocal about what you’re looking for, give honest opinions, and

ways to shop smart at a local salon. Many brick-and-mortar stores offer discounts at designer trunk shows, and host sample sales annually.

Make the Dress Your Own

If possible, leave plenty of time to shop, and be prepared to say “YES!” if you find a gown you love. Don’t forget to ask your consultant about delivery dates. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and supply chain issues, your dress may take longer to arrive. Short on time? Many bridal salons have off-the-rack sections where you can select a gorgeous gown and bring it home the same day.

The dress you try on in the store is just a starting point. Want to add a sleeve? Lower the back? Elongate the train? At a traditional bridal salon, you can work directly with the dress designer and an in-house seamstress to customize your gown and turn your dream into a reality.

Q&A

DEAR DAVID Our esteemed guru, wedding and celebrations expert David Tutera, answers your pressing reception questions.

Q

What’s the best way to incorporate children from a previous marriage into a wedding?

A

Some ideas: Have your children escort you down the aisle (as long as they’re not too little) or, of course, be your best man or maid of honor. Another great tradition that I have begun to see in my clients’ weddings is a vow exchange between husband and wife followed by exchange of vows with the children, to bring everyone together into a single family unit. Another idea is to create a family first dance: After the couple has their first dance together, the children join them, forming a circle for the next dance.

Q

I’m planning my daughter’s wedding and want to know what you’d say are the numberone reception dos and don’ts.

A

The number one do is making sure your guests are dancing and having fun! And the number one don’t is making sure that no one is sitting down for too long eating, with lulls of time in between dancing and dinner—that’s very, very important.

Q A

PHOTOGRAPHY: THE VONDYS

Can you really have a beautiful wedding on a small budget?

Absolutely! An abundance of flickering candles is an easy and inexpensive way to replace more costly flowers. And a fun, fabulous cocktail party instead of a sit-down dinner party is another great way to have a festive celebration without straining the catering budget. Finally, lowering your guest count

TUTERA TIP: will always help you achieve more dream wedding-like results on a limited budget.

Q

A

What are four quick ways to make your event special?

ONE: Tell the story of who you are as a bride and groom throughout your party—via music, cuisine, color and other details—to make your wedding more special and personalized. TWO: Create an environment. You don’t have to have a theme to have a great wedding. You have to have a style, which means color and essence. So think sense of style—Tuscan, French— rather than full-on theme. THREE: Make sure something different is happening every 30 minutes. It may mean the food might change, the music might change or the entertainment might change. Which brings me to FOUR, making sure that people feel as if they are moving, i.e., going from ceremony to cocktails to dinner and to an after-party vs. sitting down in one location for too much time. This will help keep the energy level high and the event going strong—as well as make your wedding feel bigger and even more fun.

Q

When having a wedding what are some ways to remember loved ones who are no longer with us?

A

A celebratory dance or a memorial note on your wedding program are nice ways to remember those who are no longer with us. (For example, on the pro-

Keep it moving. That’s my number-one rule for success. Once your first dance is done, get your guests out on the floor! gram, you could say “We lovingly remember family members who are with us today in spirit.”) A few things I wouldn’t suggest are a moment of silence—and certainly not an area where there is an open seat. You want to convey positive feelings and not bring any of your guests’ or your own emotions or energy down.

Q

Any tips for jazzing up a smaller wedding to achieve a higher-end illusion and maybe save some money?

A

The three key things for any successful event are, first, making sure you provide comfort for your guests: that means ample food and drink. Second, making sure that you have great entertainment. This need not mean an orchestra or band. Hire a fabulous DJ or go more DIY and put together a great music playlist on Spotify for your guests to enjoy. Third is the visual aspect: This doesn’t have to mean masses of pricey floral arrangements; it could be a colorful, stylish overall look to your tabletops and buffets. These simple tips are universal, whether you’re on a small, medium or large budget.  July/August 2022 BRIDALGUIDE.COM 27

Planners We L ve Take inspiration from these creative forces as we continue to spotlight the best in the business in our new series. by Carol Straley

TYLER SPEIER

Owner, creative director, Tyler Speier Events

Back in June of 2009, when he was a freshman in college, Tyler Speier had no intention of launching a wedding planning business. Fate took a hand when friends asked Tyler to plan their wedding—and two guests in attendance asked him to plan their celebrations. A star in the wedding planning business—Tyler Speier Events—was born! In the first year alone, Tyler planned 14 weddings, which helped to fund his education. “The business continued as a side-hustle for me throughout college and in my early career in nonprofit management and fundraising,” says Lush floral arches are a hallmark of Tyler’s Tyler. “After several years, I decided to be brave and quit signature style. my full-time job to do this full time, and I couldn’t be happier with that choice!”

My Signature Style

• “…Is where fine art and timeless elegance meet the whimsy and wonder of Nature. We do all of our planning, design, and custom floral production in-house.” • “I especially love transforming spaces in ways that you wouldn’t expect, such as transforming an old bank building into a modern wedding reception or turning a golf cart barn in the middle of nowhere into a lavish dinner party.” • “I love using lots of natural, textured foliage and blooms to make a space feel magical, from vines crawling up a 32 BRIDALGUIDE.COM July/August 2022

Favorite Moments

• “…My favorite moments from pre-and post-pandemic weddings are the same: I love when people come together to make memories and celebrate. I do reminisce about planning ‘without fear’ prior to the pandemic.” • “At one of the very first weddings we did in 2021, during the reception the guests began dancing the Hora. Everyone was singing, laughing, and dancing. It made me tear up.” A merry mix of blooms.

Navigating Challenges

• “A professionally rewarding experience was bringing each postponed wedding to life. It’s much, much harder to postpone and re-plan a celebration than it is to start from scratch.” • “Some of our couples postponed or re-planned their events three times! Some had to switch venues, others moved from indoor to outdoor locations, some reduced their guest counts or rethought their designs—it was a lot.”

Ready To Celebrate

Tyler’s design ethos lies “where fine art and timeless elegance meet the whimsy and wonder of nature,” he says.

• “With all the postponements, we are seeing an increase in weekday weddings (especially Fridays), since so many venues are booked on Saturdays. Personally, I love a weekday wedding— I find them romantic, fun, and they allow your guests to enjoy the weekend after the wedding, and have a more vacationlike experience.” • “We are also seeing lots of couples choosing to host destination weddings, especially throughout the US and Mexico.”

From the “Before Times” to Now

• “In 2020, we only did a handful of elopements. In 2021, we did over 35 weddings (and over 50 events!). We anticipate 20-25 events in 2023, which is typically our preferred number.”

Celebrating Safely

• “…For most of our celebrations, couples are opting for celebrations that are mainly outdoors or more intimate than they would have planned pre-2020. Some of our couples are requiring testing prior to the Big Day, others are asking for proof of vaccination.” • “…Our philosophy is to work with each individual client to plan a celebration that feels safe to them and their loved ones.”

More Excitement Ahead

• “I am excited to continue to build my business and thrive in this creative industry, not making decisions in fear, but with inspiration to bring people together and to create beauty.” • “I’m also excited to inspire other creative professionals through our educational programs. When I started in the industry, I felt so isolated and alone–it can be really lonely being an entrepreneur! I want to give back to creatives who are growing their businesses so they can learn and also thrive. ➺ 33

“Color ensures your wedding won’t look like the same seven weddings you just scrolled by on social media,” Andrew says.

ANDREW ROBY

Founder, Andrew Roby Events

After a decade of planning corporate events, Andrew Roby was ready to step into the more romantic and magical world of wedding planning. Taking on the leading role of “Event Storyteller,” in March of 2016, the month of his birth, Andrew founded his eponymous business to realize his dreams.“I started planning weddings because it offered a different level of experience…,” says Andrew. “I also wanted to see more couples that look like me have beautiful weddings and get featured in blogs and magazines. All of this gave more meaning to what we do since weddings have such a big emotional tie.”

“Classic concepts won’t overwhelm the look of a space, and remakably adapt to every trend.”

My Signature Wedding Style

• “…falls into two areas. Modern and Classic. If I had to give an example of each, I’d use fashion to do so. Modern would be Pharrell Williams. He embodies the idea of experimenting with concepts that are new and possibly not trending at the moment. He’s unafraid of going from vintage Chanel to Japanese streetwear. Classic would be Ralph Lauren. More focused on the aesthetics than trying to create a theme that won’t stand the test of time. Classic concepts won’t overwhelm the overall look of a space, but remarkably adapt to every trend that comes and goes.”

Why I Love Weddings

• “I’ve always wanted to get married. I grew up with a family of women who served as single parents and heads of households so the idea of having a wedding has always lived rent-free in my mind.” • “I find love very fascinating. What better love than two people coming together with their tribe of supporters seeing them grow old and being in love? If I can be the one to facilitate the start of someone’s marriage, I believe that is the most beautiful gift to have in life.”

Our Diversity Efforts

• “In 2020, I felt the desire to support racial justice in a way that impacted what I did as a profession. …I also didn’t want to create something that only supported Black people while leaving behind our Brown creatives.” 34 BRIDALGUIDE.COM July/August 2022

Favorite Moments

• “Micro-weddings and mini-monies will forever be my favorite moments from 2021 and 2022. What makes them so special to us is that couples wanted to get married and made the conscious effort to focus on the things that mattered the most to them. It was fascinating to see how quickly all of the over-the-top concepts we are used to really didn’t stand a chance for a micro-wedding couple.”

Jumping the broom.

When to Wed

• “Because of the heavy demand for weddings and the shortages we are seeing in staffing, flowers, and other hard goods, couples are a bit more willing to compromise. We have a couple that is getting married on a Tuesday. I think what matters most is the ability to simply have a wedding.” Red alert. “I’m not afraid of color,”Andrew says.

Thriving Remotely

• “Working from home has been rather soothing for me as long as I remember when to stop. Giving time back to myself has allowed me to come to each client with my best. It allows me to spend time with family and friends without falling asleep. It allows me to be present with everyone, and that has been the biggest learning.”

I Am Most Excited About

• “…The chance to break into multiple markets and to do more intentional event and wedding planning.” • “I’m excited about the diverse vendors I get to work with and to learn from them as much as they learn from me. I’m excited about my hosting and speaking gigs. I’m excited about getting a Frenchie Bulldog later this year. I can’t pick just one thing, sorry. LOL.”  35

PROS NATURE-MADE DECOR Let’s face it, who needs lavish decorations when an amber sunset, blooming wildflowers or acres of rolling kelly-green hills can serve as your backdrop? “Outdoor and tent weddings are among my favorite,” says Allison Sargent, of Allison Sargent Events in New Jersey, whose own daughter, Carly, was married in a custom-built tent overlooking two fairways on a golf course. “Everyone loves being outdoors on a glorious day,” she says. A BLANK CANVAS “Tented receptions are fantastic because they are blank canvases,” says Julie Pryor, of Pryor Events in Los Angeles. “You can add dramatic lighting, carpeting, and draping. And clear tents bring the outdoors in.”

CONS UNPREDICTABLE WEATHER “I am a big fan of outdoor events, but you need to be flexible and realize you do not have control of the weather, which has a mind of its own,” says Pryor. “I always have a backup for outdoor events, even in Southern California. This may be an indoor space that an event can be moved into or a gorgeous tent.” TENTS ARE COSTLY While the cost of tents can vary widely, based on size, type and structural design, Marcy Blum of Marcy Blum Events and Weddings in New York City says you should “absolutely” expect to pay more for a tented wedding because you’re shelling out for “not only the tent, but also for the tables, chairs, and other peripherals that are rarely included in site fees.” TEMPERATURE CONTROL “When you host your wedding outdoors you are always vulnerable to weather and change in temperature,” says Colin Cowie, of Colin Cowie Events and Celebrations, in New York and Los Angeles. What to do? “Make sure to shield guests from the sun during the day and provide heaters in the evening,” advises Pryor. Handing out paper fans and parasols can go a long way toward making your guests feel as comfortable as possible. ➺ 37

Getting married at a hotel or resort is a popular choice. The number-one draw? Convenience for you and your guests.

EXPERIENCED STAFF “Hotels are accustomed to entertaining and hosting large groups of people,” says Cowie. “Here, you have a full infrastructure and team you can rely on.” RENTALS INCLUDED Because hotels typically provide everything you need to host your wedding, you won’t have to worry about bringing in lots of tables, chairs, linens, dishes, silverware, and stemware. BUILT-IN ACCOMMODATIONS You will often be able to reserve a block of rooms for your out-oftown guests at a discounted rate. And many hotels offer wedding packages that include free honeymoon stays.

LACK OF FLEXIBILITY Depending on the hotel, your ability to rearrange the tables to suit your preferences may be limited. “Some banquet managers can be set in their ways and make it difficult to change things up,” says Blum. HIDDEN COSTS It’s important to find out exactly what’s included in your wedding—and what’s not. “For a hotel wedding, inquire about cake-cutting fees, valet costs, and overtime charges before signing a contract,” advises Pryor. OTHER RESTRICTIONS You may have to use the hotel’s vendors, such as the florist and/ or lighting designer.

Restaurant If exceptional food and service is a top priority for your wedding, consider saying your “I dos” at a fine-dining establishment.

PROS

GREAT FOOD Jessica M. held her September wedding reception for 95 guests at a high-end restaurant in Chicago. Jessica calls herself an amateur foodie, so good food and drinks were a must for her wedding. “After touring a few banquet hall and hotel ballroom venues, my husband and I realized we either had to book a restaurant that served the type of food we wanted or a raw space that would allow us to bring in our own caterer. But the cost of turning the raw space into something appealing would have blown our budget.” WELL-TRAINED SERVICE STAFF “Restaurants are in the business of making good food and providing good service,” says Jessica. Regardless, Pryor stresses the importance of booking eateries that are

Destination PROS

CHANGE OF SCENERY “Destination weddings are always beautiful and a favorite of many brides,” says Sargent. “Each far-flung location has its own wonderful attributes.” FEWER GUESTS SAVES MONEY The upside to a smaller guest list is that your catering costs go down significantly. “We went on a three-week-long trip of a lifetime, stayed in the best places, ate wonderful food, and had the wedding of our dreams with only our nearest and dearest,” says New Yorker Beata S., of her wedding in Italy. “We didn’t skimp and still wound up spending less than most people in New York City pay for just the flowers or dresses.” Fewer guests also allows you to focus

experienced in handling large parties. MINIMAL RENTALS REQUIRED Because restaurants already have tables, chairs, linens and other service items on hand, your rental costs will be much lower for a restaurant wedding than for a banquet wedding.

CONS

RESTRICTED SPACE If you want to dance the night away on your big day,

a restaurant might not be right for you. “Restaurants are usually not designed with dancing, grand entrances, live bands or bouquet tossing in mind,” admits Jessica. BUYOUT MAY BE NECESSARY “Restaurants can end up being super expensive if you have to do a buyout,” says Blum. “They will charge what they would have made on à la carte seating.”

Getting married away from home is exciting, glamorous, and a bit unexpected. And no doubt many of your guests will be happy to go along for the ride. more attention on those who made the trip. Which leads to… QUALITY TIME WITH GUESTS “What I love most about a destination wedding is that you get to take a smaller group of friends and family away and spend 72 or more quality hours with them in a remote and romantic setting rather than have a single bash in your hometown for 250 people that is all over in five hours,” says Cowie.

CONS GUESTS’ EXPENSES GO UP Airfare alone can be a hefty cost for a wedding guest. Then there are accommodations, car rental fees, a wedding gift, and more. YOU’RE IN TOUR-GUIDE MODE Because

you’re taking guests to unfamiliar territory, it’s essential that you make them feel at ease. “As guests respond that they will be attending, let them know that you cannot wait to celebrate with them,” suggests Pryor. “It is also considerate to plan weekend activities for your guests,” she says. LOCAL CUSTOMS AND RESOURCES With a destination wedding, you will often have to put your trust in vendors located many miles away and with whom you may not be very familiar. “You have to rely on local resources or pay big dollars to ship it all in,” says Cowie. “Getting married in a different country is a challenge because each country has its own set of laws when it comes to marriage,” he says.➺

Dawn’s ceremony took place in a wooded area of the backyard, which complemented her fall garden-party theme. “The chairs were arranged in a horseshoe, so we could be literally surrounded by our family and friends,” she says. SENTIMENTAL VALUE “The best part about having your wedding at home is that it is so personal. There’s nothing like getting married under the big sugar maple tree you used to climb as a child,” says Cowie. PROS CONVENIENCE OF ONE SITE Sticking with a single venue keeps the logistics simple for everyone involved. Arrive at one place, then relax and enjoy. NO TRANSPORTATION WORRIES Hiring a shuttle, traffic that could delay your party, and guests getting lost on the way from the ceremony to the reception are all nonissues when you have one venue. PRICE IS RIGHT In terms of overall cost, one site means one site fee. “I would rate a one-stop venue as inexpensive to moderately expensive because you are only decorating and putting all of your efforts into one venue,” says Sargent. “As with some

You can have your ceremony and reception in the same place: a catering hall or a church or synagogue that has an event space.

of your other choices, catering costs can vary but typically this is one of the most cost-effective options around.”

CONS DECOR BUDGET GOES UP You have the space. Now you need to work some magic to make it look like what you envisioned your wedding to be. As Blum explains, “One-stop venues are not usually the prettiest locations and may require a lot of decor dollars.” BOUND BY THE RULES The house may want you to stick to a particular setup or have limitations on the use of candles or lighting equipment and sound. Also, says Pryor, “Be sure to check on which vendors can be brought

in. You do not want to be locked into the venue’s referrals.” POTENTIAL “WEDDING FACTORY” FEEL With venues that rely on weddings for their bread and butter, you risk feeling like you’re just one in a long line of brides waiting for their turn to use the space. This is especially true if you happen to bump into another bride getting married in an adjoining room. Talk about buzz kill. Furthermore, says Cowie, “The problem with one-stop venues is most weddings tend to look the same unless you are bringing in big decor elements and have the time to set them up.” So the way to ensure that this is your day is to transform the space as best you can to suit your vision. 

One-Stop Venue

RENTAL COSTS GO UP Although you save money on the venue itself, a wedding for a large group can get expensive simply because of all the rentals you’ll need. “Remember that you will have to bring everything in, from tables and chairs to bars, glasses and even cooking equipment,” says Pryor. VALET PARKING Another important task is to assess the parking situation. Consider arranging for valet parking—and let your neighbors know ahead of time. CLEANUP REQUIRED At the end of the wedding, someone has to do the potentially massive job of cleaning up. This can either be an added expense (hiring a cleaner) or a task bestowed on a few very generous volunteers.

PRO TIPS

A MASTER PLAN How to tackle your wedding planning without losing your mind. by Paula Rizzo

I

t’s so easy to get overwhelmed and sidetracked (Pinterest anyone?) when you’re planning the biggest day of your life. You may find yourself jam-packing your planning into too many evenings and weekends, but there are ways to make sure that time is optimized. Here’s a checklist to be more efficient and keep planning from consuming your entire life.

BREAK UP YOUR WEDDING TO-DO LIST BY DATE: Having smaller lists will serve you well with such a big undertaking. Get out a calendar and work backwards from your wedding date, filling in deadlines for all your must-do tasks. Then create daily or weekly to-do lists for yourself. This way you have smaller, more manageable lists instead of one big, scary ongoing one. DELEGATE: You know how friends and family always say, “let me know if there’s anything I can do”? Well they actually mean it—so take them up on it. Take a look at This could include making appointments with your to-do list, vendors, comparing prices, finding florists in your break off certain neighborhood, etc. Plus, don’t forget to get your guy involved. Look at your to-do list and break off tasks for your certain tasks for your man. You’ll be surprised just man, and share how interested he is in finding the perfect band or some choice researching your honeymoon.

pieces of the planning pie with your darling hubby-to-be.

with your fiancé about the to-do lists and what needs to get done. Having a regular meeting, once a week or every two weeks, will help to set expectations and make planning run more smoothly.

BUNDLE TASKS: Would you do your laundry one sock at a time? No, you wait until you have enough clothes for a full load. Same goes for your wedding tasks. Bundle them to be more productive with your time. For instance, set a specific time and day to check in with your vendors or pay all your deposit bills at once instead of piecemeal.

ASSIGN A TIME LIMIT: Oh the time you could spend researching color palettes, bouquets, venues, etc. online! To avoid analysis paralysis, assign yourself a limit on how much time per day or week you spend researching each florist, dressmaker and venue. At some point you need to just made a decision and move on—otherwise you’ll feel like you’re drowning in choices.

KEEP NOTES ACCESSIBLE: No doubt you’re holding onto myriad swatches, websites and lists as you plan, but sometimes carrying that enormous paper binder just isn’t doable. I suggest going digital with Evernote. Start on the website and make notebooks for all your vendors and a notebook for ideas and inspiration. Then use the app when you’re out and about to refer to your notes or add information as it pops into your head.

REWARD YOURSELF: One of the keys to getting things done is having a light at the end of the tunnel. Yes, getting married to the love of your life should be that light but I’m talking shortterm goals here. To stay motivated to work through your to-do list give yourself a reward. This could be a half hour on Pinterest, a 20-minute call with your best friend, a mani/pedi or just about anything that will inspire you to get more done in less time—the better to walk down the aisle in stress-free, serene style.

BE REALISTIC: Take a look at your to-do lists. Set yourself up for success by being realistic and understanding that you might need some help crossing them off. Or you might just need to let some of those ideas go and move on to what you are able to do. Also set aside a scheduled time (like Sunday mornings) to chat

TRADE SECRETS STRAIGHT FROM THE SOURCE, TOP WEDDING PROS SHARE CREATIVE COST-CUTTING STRATEGIES. BY SHARON NAYLOR

SITE FEES “Booking on a Friday night or Sunday afternoon or evening can be a big savings over heftier Saturday night costs. Also consider a Thursday night wedding, which can shave approximately 10% to 20% off your budget, and you and your guests get to enjoy a three-day weekend (just make sure to send out save-thedates first!),” says Jenny Orsini, of Jenny Orsini Events in Berkeley Heights, NJ. “Prices are lower during the months of December through March, and can add up to $40 to $50 less per guest,” Orsini says. (Adds Christopher Confero, of Christopher Confero Design in Atlanta, GA: “Renting a venue in January can save you around 25%.”)

“Sunday mornings are also becoming more popular, since you have the option for a terrific brunch with a large spread, at a cost of 30% less than a dinner,” says Andrea Correale, president of Elegant Affairs Off-Premise Catering and Event Design, in Glen Cove, NY.

“When looking for a venue, you should always ask about the special events planned for the space both before and after yours. Many times, you can see what equipment (lighting, staging, draping, etc.) they are using and potentially ‘share’ the cost of the equipment if both events have similar needs,” says Dallas event designer AKA “America’s Sassiest Lifestyle Guru” Steve Kemble.

FLOWERS & DECOR “Put your money where guests spend time and are going to appreciate it. If you aren’t having a sit-down dinner, don’t use your flower budget on expensive table centerpieces. If you’re having a cocktail reception and everyone will be lined up at the bar, have your designer create a ‘wow’ floral piece in that area so guests enjoy it all night! If you concentrate the decor in one area instead of spreading it out around the room, this could easily save you 20% on your decor budget,” says Confero. “Carnations are one of the most cost-effective flowers available. When they’re used in dense monochromatic designs, they have a lot of impact. Although they aren’t as lush as roses or peonies, these hardy little flowers can be used to

create a similar look for half the cost,” says Pennylyn Kaine, owner and floral designer, Blossom and Bee, Oak Ridge, NJ. Ask your floral designer to make blooms look pricier. “For instance, avoid ‘antique hydrangeas’ that have wine-tinted blossoms, since they cost about $24 apiece retail. Your

floral designer can use specialty floral spray to make regular hydrangeas look like the pricier kind, saving you $20 apiece,” says Gaffney. Let your floral pro suggest fabulous fillers. “Bear grass gives a striking architectural look to centerpieces and costs 60 to 70% less than some other fillers and greenery. As for baby’s breath, a bunch may cost a mere $6, but for an impressive look, you’ll need a lot…which could add up to ➺ 43

“ASK YOURSELF: WHAT ARE MY TOP THREE DREAM ELEMENTS? IS THE FOOD MOST IMPORTANT? THE BAND? THE DRESS? CRAFT YOUR BUDGET AROUND WHAT YOU KNOW YOU WANT, TO SPLURGE THERE AND CUT BACK ON SOME THINGS THAT AREN’T AS IMPORTANT,” SAYS CONFERO. $80,” says Gaffney. “Tall centerpieces on average start at approximately $150. You can easily save 50 to 60% by eliminating height, and adding an intimate feel with more candlelight than florals,” Orsini says.

FOOD “Instead of a formal sit-down dinner, chef-attended watchwhile-they-cook ‘action stations’ can add an interactive element to the evening,” says Confero. “Everyone gets fed without the hassle and the wait of table service, and cutting down on the wait staff should easily shave 15% off of your catering bill.”

“The days of gluttony are over,” Correale continues. “It’s now in good taste to tantalize guests during the cocktail hour with just one or two stations as opposed to four or five, and offer handpassed hors d’oeuvres, choosing healthier, lighter foods, which cost a lot less than heavier hot-station foods.”

“Buffet style can usually be more cost-effective than formal, sit-down service, saving approximately 20 to 30%,” says Orsini. “Brunches offer a large spread of food, with many light and healthy dishes that are far less expensive per menu item than the heavier and more indulgent foods found at cocktail

“We all love champagne, but limiting the reception toast to just the bride and groom can save a chunk of cash. With an average guest list of 140, you would save approximately $420 by not having a receptionwide toast,” says Chris Easter, groom-centric wedding and etiquette expert, co-founder of TheManRegistry.com.

party stations and sit-down dinners,” Correale says.

DRINKS “House liquors can save you 15% over the cost of top-shelf liquors,” says Orsini. “You don’t need to do a full open bar,” Orsini continues. “Just provide a few signature drinks, and house wines and beers. Hard liquor is not a necessity at a wedding and can often drive up the cost.” “Plan a cocktail hour where you pass champagne or offer one signature cocktail, but then switch to just beer and wine at your reception. That will easily save a good 30% or more on your bar tab,” Confero says.

CAKE & DESSERTS “My rule of thumb is to only plan on having cake for 75% of your guests,” says Confero. “And do you absolutely need a groom’s cake? Absolutely not.” “Design a cake that has some faux layers for making a

44 BRIDALGUIDE.COM July/August 2022

big visual impression while cutting it, and also have a sheet cake in the kitchen for serving, which can save 15 to 20%,” says Orsini. Go with standard icing flavors like vanilla and lemon, and opt for buttercream over fondant, which can save around $1 per slice,” says Anne Heap, owner and cake designer at Pink Cake Box in Denville, NJ. “Bring in your own candy buffet instead of having a big, expensive Viennese dessert hour. Or, have a plated dessert with two to three desserts of your choice, to serve along with the cake,” suggests Orsini.

Choose crowd-pleasing classic flavors. “For cakes, vanilla, chocolate, lemon and key lime cost a bit less than red velvet and carrot cake,” Heap tells us.

“Instead of a Viennese dessert hour, it’s now an elegant trend to have waiters handpass little dessert options. Since the caterer can control the portions, it often saves $8 per person,” says Correale.

PHOTOGRAPHY Consider going with a smaller photo package upfront with the potential to upgrade after the wedding, such as ordering your flash drive later,” says New York-based photographer Amanda Picone. “Consult with photographers about your planned timeline. I usually recommend coverage

only through to the cake cutting and bouquet toss. After that point, many of your photos will be repetitive dancing shots. If everything is occurring in one location, six hours of coverage might be enough and save you hundreds of dollars over a longer time frame,” says Picone. “You might only need one person taking photos if it’s a small wedding. Cutting a second and third shooter from the list can save at least 20%,” says Confero.

MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT “A DJ is often going to be a lot cheaper than a full band, and would probably save you 60% or so,” Confero tells us. “Check out local bands that haven’t made it big yet. Go out for drinks with the girls and scope out some local talent at the bars you frequent. If you have your heart set on a particular act, talk to them and see if negotiation is possible,” says Confero. 

“Rather than have your DJ work during the cocktail hour, ask the venue if they can stream music from an iPhone. Or, if you have a friend or family member who is a musician, ask them to perform during cocktail hour. It adds a nice personal touch. Cutting out the DJ’s extra time can save approximately 10 to 15%,” says Orsini.

WEDDING PLANNING 101 You’ve got the ring— what comes next? Here, our guide to stress-free, perfect planning.

PHOTOGRAPHY: CORINNE GRAVES PHOTOGRAPHY

FIRST THINGS FIRST • MAKE THE ANNOUNCEMENT. Some couples just don’t feel right if anyone knows their big news before their parents and other close family members do. If possible, tell both sets of folks in person. If your parents don’t live nearby, put in a special phone call. • DELVE INTO DREAMS. Sit down with your fiancé and talk ideas. Think about the style you envision, whether it’s a beach bash, a sit-down dinner in a ballroom or a ceremony on a mountaintop. No talk of money. Yet. • ROUGH OUT THE TIMING. While you don’t have to set a firm date now, it’s smart to have an idea of what month or season you want to marry in. Then you’ll know how long you have to get things organized. Because your wedding’s size determines where you’ll hold the party, how much it will cost (prices usually rise per guest) and whether travel will be involved, creating a guest list is one of the most important things to do. So make your list; your fiancé and both families should do the same. You can, and likely will, cut later, but this first number will be your base. • NOW TALK MONEY. It’s rare these days that the bride’s parents pick up the whole bill, so decide on your bottom line. Find out from both sets of parents if or how much they can contribute.

GET ORGANIZED Set up a spreadsheet or notebook with sections for each budget category. This way you can input the amount you want to spend on each item and then note your expenditures. As you near your limits, you can start to figure out ways to cut costs.

SET YOUR SITES CEREMONY SPECIFICS. Finding an officiant and a ceremony site can be simple—if, say, you wish to marry in your hometown house of worship. Even if you’re no longer living in the area, you may have family who still are and can help out. Sometimes for the sake of convenience, couples choose a place that’s in between their homes and their parents’. And then there’s the destination wedding; just make sure that everyone you really want to join you and your groom can afford to travel and is able to make it.

THE RECEPTION VENUE. Think again

about those wedding dreams, and see how they mesh with reality. Perhaps you envision a lush, outdoor garden abloom with pink and white flowers. Fine, but what if you can’t find just the right place or the weather is an issue? Maybe there’s a quaint hotel with a pretty courtyard that would suit. Some couples find historic homes in their area to rent. Use local resources to narrow down options: a wedding planner or a recently married friend. Check wedding websites and bridal magazines. Then start scheduling visits. July/Aug 2022 BRIDALGUIDE.COM 45

KNOW YOUR PROS Here’s how to hire the best.

• PHOTOGRAPHER AND VIDEOGRAPHER. The best ones

usually book weddings many months in advance, so get on this one early. Get recommendations from friends, then research what kinds of shots you’d like to see—formal portraits and dancing shots or a candid, journalistic format. Always ask to see other wedding albums the pro has done. • MUSICIANS. Arrange to hear musicians perform before you sign them on. Make sure they agree to stick to the playlist you give them, including any “do not play” tunes. Find out how they will dress and how many breaks they will take. Hiring a DJ is usually less expensive than a live band, but not always. • FLOWERS AND DECOR. Once you have your reception site booked, you can decide on table QUICK TIP arrangements and other decorations. A hotel Not sure what kind of ballroom might be a relatively blank slate, album you want? Look for photographers with whereas a museum may need little more than a looser style and many simple centerpieces. If you can buy fresh stems package choices on offer. You don’t have to at a local farm, ask a talented friend to help make up your mind right put together bouquets and centerpieces. Or ask away. After the wedding, you may even want to your florist to incorporate tons of greenery to get creative and make make fewer flowers look like a lot more. your own album. • CATERER. You want to know how dishes will taste and look and how flexible the caterer is with menus and prices. Don’t be afraid to bargain; you can cut costs by limiting the number and kinds of hors d’oeuvres served at cocktail hour.

MAIDEN VOYAGE When choosing your attendants, follow these tips: • Explain to prospective bridesmaids what the role requires, like

planning the shower and paying for their attire. • Tell each ’maid that she’ll need to commit a certain amount of

time and energy—and if she can’t, it’s fine for her to decline. • Choose as many or as few bridesmaids as you want. • Give your closest friend or relative the maid of honor position. • Include a female relative of your groom in your bevy of bridesmaids; it’s a diplomatic move that can only strengthen family relations.

ATTIRE ADVICE It’s not strictly necessary to know wedding place and time details before you shop. Whereas fashion guidelines were more rigid in the past (not wearing a glittery sheath for a daytime wedding, for example), the rules are looser now. But check with your house of worship; some require covered shoulders or heads. Start shopping whenever you feel pumped—and don’t forget to have your guy rent formalwear for himself and his groomsmen. ➺

ON THE MONEY Wedding budgets have a way of expanding like a balloon. Keep yours from popping (and give yourself some wiggle room for those unexpected expenses or must-haves) by reining in spending. Here, six smart saving tips: ➊ BORROW. Did you totally love the tiara your sister wore? Borrow it for your ensemble! You can borrow jewelry (just like the stars do at Oscar time) and other accessories, honeymoon luggage (no reason to splurge on new suitcases if your parents have good stuff), vases for centerpieces (if you’re doing these yourself) and so on. ➋ USE PEOPLE’S DIY SKILLS. If your aunt is a sewing whiz, she can create a veil or even do alterations on your dress. A skilled artist can create personalized invitations. A crafty pal can come up with a fun favor. An avid scrapbooker can put together an album for you. Just let them know this will be their wedding gift to you. ➌ CREATE A SIGNATURE DRINK. If you’re tempted to save by having a cash bar, stop! Instead, cut down on liquor costs by

offering one signature drink (like a gourmet martini) along with beer, soda and juices. Another idea: Buy cases of a favorite local wine and serve just that. ➍ LIMIT THE LIMOS. It’s nice to pull up to the ceremony location in a sleek limo or classic car, but consider skipping the rides elsewhere to save money. Instead have your brother or a cousin chauffeur you and your new hubby to the reception. ➎ DON’T GO FLOWER MAD. There are plenty of ways to keep your bill from blooming: Buy flowers wholesale and give them to a florist to work with or create centerpieces that use candles and just a few beautiful blooms. A profusion of petals looks lush and lovely, but keep in mind you can get the same effect with fewer flowers than you think. ➏ AVOID IMPULSE BUYING. Got everything on your list? Then stop shopping. If you’ve already bought your bridesmaids lovely shawls, and you see pretty handbags that would match… and sparkly earrings…put them down.

DRESS SHOPPING • ERASE THE EMOTION. If you were the girl who pinned towels in her hair to play bride, you may need extra help with this step. Pulling the emotion out of the event and remaining level-headed as you shop for your dress will help you stay within the bounds of both budget and practicality. If it helps, bring your mom and a down-to-earth pal along with you.

PHOTOGRAPHY: CORBIN GURKIN PHOTOGRAPHY

• KNOW WHAT KIND OF SHOPPER YOU ARE. Some brides relish the hunt for the ideal dress, and happily book a number of appointments at bridal salons. They like having a salesperson who offers ideas and selects gown styles for them. Others would really love to just slip into a store (a department store, a specialty boutique, a secondhand shop) and find their dress hanging there on the rack. Both ways are possible. Decide which kind of shopper you are, and work accordingly. • DON’T SECOND-GUESS YOURSELF. Think you’ve found The One? Then you probably have. Look no further—and relax.

QUICK TIP It’s likely everyone will be going snap-happy with their camera phones. To avoid ending up with 300 nearly identical shots, give guests a few ideas (print up a card to place on each table). Suggest one photo of each couple at the table, some goofy dance pics and a surprise shot of their choice—all to be shared later.

TAME THAT GUEST LIST When you pay a caterer by the head, every guest is a ka-ching on the total bill—not just for the food and drink, but also for tips and taxes, which rise accordingly. Here are some ways to keep the list under control: • DON’T INVITE THE WHOLE OFFICE—either

just ask your boss and your closest friends at work or no one at all. • DON’T DIG INTO YOUR OLD ADDRESS BOOK

for blasts from the past; stick to those people you see regularly. • REIN IN PARENTS. They can invite their friends,

but they don’t have to ask the garden club and the tennis buddies and the former neighbors.

HOW INVITING Your invitations should be sent out six to eight weeks before the big day, so work backward from there to be sure you order in time. The basic invite announces the hosts of the wedding (whether that’s the two of you, your parents or a combination) and the place and time of the ceremony. It may include a card that gives the reception details, a reply card and envelope. Have a sample of the invite in hand before deciding to use it—and proofread! Never include registry information with your invitation.

PIECES OF THE PIE No matter what your wedding budget may be, here’s a rough idea of how much is typically spent in each category. Keep in mind that the numbers are not hard and fast. Some couples may, for example, choose to spend more on photography and less on flowers. It’s completely up to you!

• Reception: 40% • Engagement rings and wedding bands: 6% • Photography and videography: 10.5% • Invitations: 2%

• Wedding attire: 7% • Flowers: 5% • Music: 5% • Miscellaneous: 10% • Honeymoon: 14.5%

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SAMPLE OF YOUR INVITE IN HAND BEFORE DECIDING WHETHER OR NOT TO USE IT— AND REMEMBER TO PROOFREAD, PROOFREAD, PROOFREAD!

ALL ABOUT YOU It’s easy to become so caught up in the planning that you forget one simple thing: you! So start now to create and stick to a self-care plan. EXERCISE REGULARLY AND KEEP TO A HEALTHY DIET. Even a 30-minute walk several times a week can be enough to keep you feeling energetic. To prevent fatigue, take a mul-

tivitamin everyday, especially if you’re skipping meals. Bring healthy snacks—almonds, a banana—along with you when you go shopping or to work. GET PLENTY OF SLEEP. Most brides-to-be find themselves having some late nights, but try your best not to skimp on sleep; not getting enough contributes to lowered immu-

nity, and you don’t want to get sick now. Plus, well-rested gals always look their best. MEET WITH A HAIRSTYLIST. If you want to maintain your current cut and/or color, tell your regular hairstylist, and be sure you’re not due for an appointment the week before your big day (you should ideally have your hair cut and colored a couple of

weeks prior). If this stylist will do your hair for the wedding, see her for a practice session or two to try a couple of hairdos. (If you’re wearing a headpiece or tiara, bring it along.) PRACTICE MAKEUP. Most stores will give you free makeovers; tell them you’re getting married and they’ll go all out.

JOHANNA MASON

Trips around the sun hold a special place in this couple’s hearts. He proposed on her birthday, and the couple celebrated their nuptials on his. PHOTOGRAPHED BY LEAH DANIELS PHOTOGRAPHY

MASON BURKS WOOLDRIDGE AND JOHANNA REHILL fell in love over a glass of water. “Mason was in town finishing a contract with the local school districts,” says Johanna, a middle school reading teacher. (The groom is a school safety consultant.) “On his last night, a friend dragged him to a local pizza place, where I was bartending at the time.” They capped off 11 months of dating with a family vacation on Captiva Island over Johanna’s birthday. Says she, “Mason got down on one knee in front of my family and gave me the best present I could ask for, my engagement ring!” The pandemic put a few stops and starts in their planning, but one thing never changed: the wedding date itself: August 20, 2020— Mason’s birthday. The couple exchange vows at The Pump House Weddings and B&B in Bloomsburg, PA.

Chebeague Island Inn

This stately family-owned hideaway stands in one of Maine’s most famous bays—Casco, a source for seafood (did someone say, lobsters?) sailing excursions and only-in-Vacationland rocky shore vistas. Guests here relish in classic New England offerings of the seasonal destination including biking, beaching, tennis and golf. Of course, there’s also kicking back and enjoying the surroundings in Adirondack chairs on the grand lawn, and spending evenings around the fire roasting marshmallows. Meals are garden-fresh and sourced both on-island and locally as are the shellfish and other seafood (room rates start at $199 a night; chebeagueislandinn.com).

GILI LANKANFUSHI MALDIVES The Pacific archipelago the Maldives is one of the world’s most fantastical destinations. It is a place where coral atolls, islets and larger beachfringed land masses are surrounded by crystalline waters. At this sanctuary just 20 minutes from the main island of Male, three-, five-, and sevenday wellness programs parallel the spiritual and local-based philosophy on sustainability. Breezy overwater bungalow accommodations are crafted with local woods and feature furnishings made from sustainably sourced bamboo and teak, among other materials. The holistic spa is the centerpiece of this barefoot-luxe retreat where hammocks swinging over the water are a common sight. Healing rituals are based largely on Ayurveda practices and are customized (room rates start at $1,140 a night and are all inclusive; gili-lankanfushi.com).

FOUR SEASONS RESORT BORA BORA After landing at an airport that inhabits its own island, visitors to this ultra-luxe retreat transfer via private yacht. The ride is nothing short of spectacular thanks to the water’s myriad shades of blue punctuated by verdant islands ringed with powdered sands. The resort itself excels in all the accoutrements of French Polynesia, including overwater bungalow accommodations and spectacular snorkeling along the shoreline of the secluded island. An ultra-pampering spa beckons with traditional healing practices and private yoga sessions looking out onto the painterly surroundings. And excursions, including a sunset cruise, are available on that aforementioned yacht (room rates start at about $1,015 a night; fourseasons.com).

Aptly named Dunton. A peek at The Eddy Taproom.

rom afar, Colorado, with its square shape on the US map, may not look exciting, but the Western destination offers some of the country’s most varied landscapes. There are red rock formations and dense forests, vast grasslands and towering mountains and some of the highest sand dunes in North

America. All of which is dotted with riots of wildflowers, quaint towns, and cosmopolitan cities filled with welcoming hotels and luxury hideaways. And where-to-wed options are as exciting as the action-inviting landscape of the state. Here are three of our favorites.

This former mining town turned luxury resort is the ultimate destination for an intimate wedding. Buyouts mean your guests can exclusively enjoy the property’s moniker spa waters and all manner of outdoor pursuits from fly fishing to hiking plus meals in the saloon—the heart of the hotel—all while staying in one of 12 hand-hewn wood cabins. Just-the-two-of-us packages are wildly popular here. Couples can swap vows anywhere on property, but the open-air chapel is especially charming (wedding packages start at $6,500 for up to 16 people and include ceremony location and set-up, bridal bouquet and boutonniere, a wedding cake, dinner, photography and more; duntondestinations.com).

adventures, this new hotel in the city of Golden is the quintessential rocky-mountain hideaway. Just 49 guest rooms and public spaces artfully blend a rugged commercial ethos (think oversized windows and red brick walls) with local decor touches and cuisin—the onsite food truck is especially popular. As its name suggests, the beer selection here is superior and can be savored rooftop as you toast to your union (elopement packages start at $1,000 and include ceremony and beer toast, plus a night in the honeymoon suite; theeddygolden.com).

THE CURTIS, A DOUBLETREE BY HILTON Quirky city brides say “I do” at this Denver hotel positioned near the Denver Performing Arts Complex. The property leans into its retro-pop vibe with cheeky decor items and fun amenities like old-school games, but it also has a serious side.

LEGALLY WEDDED Licenses are required to marry in the state of Colorado. Both applicants must appear in person with proof of age and the $30 fee. There is no waiting period, nor are blood tests or witnesses required. The license, which is issued by the County Clerk’s office, is valid for 35 days.

The art collection is astounding and each guest room showcases exclusively commissioned pieces. Ceremonies here are often held on the Four Square Terrace, which has amazing Rocky Mountain and city views (wedding packages start at $125 per night, plus $950 ceremony site fee and includes on-site coordination, set-up and more; thecurtis.com). ¢

A South Asian Dream Wedding in a Caribbean Paradise

At Beaches® Resort in Turks & Caicos

I

f you imagine having your South Asian dream destination wedding in a Caribbean paradise, take a cue from newly married couple Dhruva and Rittika. They chose Beaches Resorts for the most special celebration of their lifetime, because Beaches is the world’s only all-inclusive family resorts that lets couples create their dream wedding and personalize every detail. The couple wanted their cultural traditions to play a central role in their wedding celebration, and they knew nobody could do that better than Beaches. After all, with Beaches Customizable Weddings, brides and grooms have the ability to mix and match endless décor options to reflect their personal sense of style for the various ceremonies and receptions—everything from the colors and abundant floral, to Mandap style and venue locations, to place settings, table décor, menus, bars and more. In the months leading up to their luxurious South Asian destination wedding, Dhruva and Rittika worked closely with their personal Beaches Wedding Entourage to bring the vision of their wedding weekend to life. They were able to incorporate all traditional elements and more into their weekend-long celebration, which included a Haldi, where the seated couple were surrounded by bright orange and yellow fabrics and strands of marigolds. Family and friends gathered around to spread turmeric paste onto the faces of the bride and groom to ward off evil spirits and bring them prosperity.

Later that evening, the couple threw a grand Sangeet celebration, where family and friends performed their choreographed dances beneath an arching dome draped in jewel-toned fabric. The next day began with a stunning beach ceremony under a tented Mandap, followed by more celebrations with a sunset cocktail hour, evening dinner reception complete with entertainment and dancing, a latenight S’mores and Sweets bonfire and finally an after party at Club Liquid. Like Dhruva and Rittika, you’ll be able to incorporate your South Asian traditions into your wedding at Beaches by working with a resourceful wedding team who will go above and beyond to make sure every detail is in place, whether that means sourcing special items not ordinarily part of Beaches’ extensive inventory, or adapting items at the resort with décor, like the golf cart that was transformed for Dhruva’s Baraat. Equipped with a genuine Tandoor oven, and onsite executive chefs that can customize your Indian cuisine menus, Beaches 5-Star Global Gourmet™ culinary team are able to whip up authentic, mouthwatering South Asian dishes, like those served for Dhruva and Rittika’s celebration. Of course, one of the best reasons for a destination wedding at Beaches is that, after the vows are exchanged, you can get your honeymoon started while your guests enjoy an amazing vacation where everything is included for adults and kids alike.

“Palm Springs is truly so beautiful everywhere you turn.”

“THERE IS SOMETHING SUPER SPECIAL ABOUT THE DESERT,” say Maddie née Marcus and her husband, Kevin Gross. And the city of Palm Springs, an oasis known for its mid-century architecture, excellent food and direct access to some of the country’s most spectacular desert landscapes, is one of their favorite places to visit. The Los Angeles-based couple hosted friends and family for a weekend celebration that centered around a ceremony in a pretty garden with views of the cactus-studded San Jacinto Mountains at Casa Cody, an intimate modernist-meetsSpanish architecture property in the tony enclave. “The whole weekend felt like camp,” they say. “All of our closest friends and family were on site, so the grounds felt very warm and homey.”

In addition to splashing around pretty pools shaded by towering palm trees, popular area activities include golf and hiking across the cacti-punctuated landscape in nearby Joshua Tree National Park. To enjoy it all, Maddie, who visited the enclave multiple times prior to her big day, suggests packing “sunscreen, golf clubs, a great book and good vibes.”

We are family.

Palm Springs boasts the largest collection of mid-century modern homes in the world. Famed for its attention to indoor/ outdoor living, the local style—known as Desert Modernism—celebrates relaxation and enjoying the natural beauty of the surroundings. Characteristics include flat roofs, carports, breeze-block accents and loads of windows. Among the city’s notable buildings are the Twin Palms Estate, once owned by Frank Sinatra; the Elrod House, which starred in a James Bond movie; and the local art museum that’s housed in a 1961 Santa Fe Savings & Loan building. ➺

“A lot of the guests golfed in groups on Saturday morning before the wedding. There are plenty of golf courses in Palm Springs so you really can’t go wrong with any course.”

Draped in vibrant bougainvillea and surrounded by swaying palms, the circa 1920s whitewashed Casa Cody is the oldest hotel in Palm Springs. (Fun fact: It’s named for its founder Harriet Cody, cousin of Buffalo Bill Cody.) Because it was incorporated as an inn in the 1920s, the property enjoys the distinction of being located within walking distance of the center of town, and guests can easily access all the eateries and other amenities within mere minutes. That is, of course, if they are lured from the picture-perfect hacienda property, where green lawns are dotted with all manner of lounging options like chaises by the pool and umbrella-shaded outdoor eating areas. They all have unbeatable views of the bright desert sky and many look onto the San Jacinto Mountains. Small plates and grab-and-go food options enhance the familiar family atmosphere of the hideaway (room rates start at $249 a night; casacody.com). 

Our favorite treat was the fresh nutmeg ice cream at the resort’s Cafe de Paris. We enjoyed it as a mid-day snack by the pool, a cone before dinner and afterwards for dessert. Sneak a peek at one of the hottest new hotels where romantic amenities are always on offer.

ANTIGUA, GUATEMALA, IS ONE OF THOSE MAGICAL PLACES WHERE the mornings are shrouded with the mist of the surrounding mountains, the afternoons are filled with color-enhancing sunshine and evenings are tranquil thanks to the star-laden sky. It also happens to be one of the largest coffee producers in the world. Visitors here are welcomed with small antique shops and family-owned cafes set along a leafy plaza and photogenic Colonial architecture, including that famous covered yellow bridge that hovers above the cobblestone streets. And days here are spent lingering among it all. Located on the outskirts of the colonial town, the reimagined Villa Bokeh is an intimate hacienda hotel of just seven guest rooms that’s blissfully ensconced in a six-acre tropical garden with unbeatable volcano views. Visitors reposing here in bespoke accommodations with themed decor harkening to the history of Guatemala are treated to the ultimate in pampering LOCAL FAVORITES service.
