Q&A

wedding

Straight talk, smart solutions by Diane Forden, Editor in Chief

Q

My fiancé and I would like to include our dog, Ripley, in our wedding and have him walk down the aisle at our ceremony. Any advice on what we need to do?

A

St. Petersburg, Florida

Beloved pets are definitely playing a major role in weddings today. Just be sure that your location site is amenable to having animals on the property and included in the ceremony (most religious venues will not allow pets). And consider your dog’s personality. Is he comfortable around people? Does he tend to bark loudly and often? Hopefully, he is a calm canine, loves people and listens to commands. You don’t want to risk including a pet that is irritable and snappish—or a frisky pup that would never stay still for very long. Also, check with your venue to see if you might need a security deposit to cover any unforeseen accidents with your pet. It’s a good idea to bring Ripley to the rehearsal to make sure he’s comfortable with his role and to have him practice walking and sitting at the site. On the wedding day, don’t give him too much food or water before the ceremony but do have treats on hand afterward. Speak with your photographer to determine what types of shots you want taken with your pet. I wouldn’t recommend bringing him to the reception, however. Make arrangements to have Ripley picked up after the photo session or if you do decide you’d like him to stay, designate a dog sitter to look after him during the celebration. If Ripley is a small dog he can be carried by a junior bridesmaid or groomsman or toted in a little wagon. Ask your florist to create a

floral dog collar and check online for other festive pet accessories for the big day.

GIFT QUERY

Q

On our engagement party invitations is it appropriate to let guests know where we have registered Darien, Connecticut for gifts?

A

Registry information should never be included on engagement party or wedding invitations. Stores or websites where you’re registered should only be mentioned on bridal shower invites. However, since it’s likely that some guests will want to bring gifts to your celebration, it’s OK to let your friends and family know where you’re registered in case they’re asked. Also, keep in mind that it’s best to open any gifts you receive in private— after the festivities—and don’t forget the thank-you notes!

PROGRAM NOTES

Q

What’s the best way to distribute wedding programs? Should they be displayed on a table in the back of the ceremony site or should ushers hand them to guests San Antonio, Texas as they arrive?

A

There are a number of ways to distribute your programs. But leaving them on a table in back isn’t one of them. At a wedding I attended recently the couple did just that and most guests (myself included) had no idea the programs were available until after the ceremony. Since you will invest time and thought into writing and designing your program you want to make sure your guests appreciate your efforts and have them in hand during

the ceremony. Ask your ushers, a friend or relative to pass them out to guests as they arrive. They can also place a stack of programs at the end of a pew or on each seat. Another sweet idea: As your guests arrive, have your flower girls distribute the programs from handheld baskets.

POP-IN PARTY

Q

I received an invitation to a “pop-in” bridal shower taking place from two to four p.m. and would like to know how long guests are expected to stay?

A

Warwick, Rhode Island

For this type of shower, guests can stay for as long or as short a time as they’d like. “Pop-in” implies that this is a casual affair and invitees can come by anytime within that two-hour duration. There may be some light refreshments offered rather than a full meal, and if it’s at someone’s home there may be limited seating as well. You’re not expected to be there for the entire two hours, so if you’d like to stop in about an hour after it starts and stay for 30 minutes that’s perfectly fine. ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. And send your planning questions to us at mail@bridalguide.com.

Reasons to Shop at Your Local Bridal Salon

The YES Moment

You,ve probably been dreaming of this day for a long time—with good reason! There is no greater feeling than trying on a wedding gown and seeing yourself as a bride for the very first time. Surrounded by friends and loved ones makes the YES moment that much sweeter! Selection

Make the Dress Your Own

Bridal salons offer the largest selection of reputable designers, styles, and colors.Your consultant will work directly with the designer to ensure everything from the color, to the fabric and the fit, are exactly what you envision.

The dress you try on in the store is just a starting point. Want to add a sleeve? Lower the back? Elongate the train? At a traditional bridal salon, you can work with a seamstress to customize your gown and turn your dream into a reality.

Feel-Good Factor

Special Pricing

When you buy from a trusted, local bridal salon, you not only support your community, but also small businesses mostly owned by women!

No Surprises You get what you pay for. A designer dress may be pricier than similar versions online, but counterfeit gowns can be poorly constructed, ill-fitting, and made out of cheap fabrics, if you receive your gown at all.

If budget is a concern, there are many ways to shop smart at a local salon. Many brick-and-mortar stores offer discounts at designer trunk shows, and host sample sales annually.

So Much More Than Just the Gown Your trained consultant will take precise measurements, assist with alterations, and put you at ease throughout the entire process. The salon will even steam your gown and store it safely until your wedding day!

For more wedding day fashion shopping tips, visit bridalguide.com/perfectdress.

THE DESSY GROUP

A NEW

TWIST

The Dessy Group designer Carlos Saavedra redefines the bridesmaid dress with chic, versatile and comfortable silhouettes. How was Dessy founded? The Dessy Group got its start in 1939. Originally known as A & M Rosenthal, the company produced bridal veils and headpieces designed by Margot Rosenthal. In the 1950s, bridal and bridesmaid dresses were added to the company’s lines. With the third generation, the business became known as The Dessy Group.

The Loop Dress in Silverstone, about $150.

In what ways can bridesmaid dresses complement the bride’s look? Bridesmaids

The Loop Dres in Cabernet, about $150. BELOW: The midi-length Loop Dress in Desert Rose, about $140.

are a big part of the whole composition of the wedding and choosing the right color is key. I prefer tones that blend with or complement the color palette of the event and most importantly align with a bride’s personal taste as this carries a very special and sentimental value.

Are you seeing any specific trends in bridesmaid dresses? Individuality is

my favorite trend and one on which I based my Loop Dress collection. This plays very well with bridesmaids: They can choose their own dress styles in matching colors, ensuring a cohesive look.

Are there certain dresses you would recommend for various wedding destinations/themes? My Loop Dress is ideal for

a destination wedding as it is very easy to pack and even comes with its own travel pouch. With a removable looped band, a bridesmaid can wear the dress ten different ways by altering its placement. The fabric was specially developed for us and is made of a non-wrinkle luxe jersey that is very supple and elegant.

How would you describe the design aesthetic of this collection? I would say

that it exudes a modern femininity current with our times—and yet it’s still timeless. With the variety of ways to wear it, a bridesmaid can replicate the most iconic of looks. I wanted to create a dress with an effortless beauty that is comfortable, practical and fits the lifestyle of women today.—Anna Smutny

Your Weekend Wedding Planner

OUR ULTIMATE GUIDE TO PUTTING TOGETHER

AN UNFORGETTABLE MULTI-DAY AFFAIR. BY LYNNE KENDALL LAWSON

TYPICAL WEEKEND TIMELINE FRIDAY Daytime events for early-arriving guests might include a ladies’ lunch and a guys’ outing to a driving range. If you have wedding planning tasks to handle on this day, arrange for a member of your wedding party to host these events. Rehearsal dinner/welcome buffet: Depending on your budget and number of guests, the rehearsal dinner can include just your bridal party, officiant and immediate family members or you can open it up to your out-of-town guests as well. If you hold a more exclusive dinner, be sure to provide your out-of–town guests with a welcome cocktail party/buffet, generally held at the hotel.

SATURDAY Before the wedding: a buffet breakfast for your bridal party. After the wedding: a fun after-party. You might all gather at the hotel lounge, or take your friends out on the town while parents host their own friends elsewhere. (Added bonus: Your hotel might allow you free use of their shuttle to take your group to the destination.)

SUNDAY The morning-after brunch or breakfast. And if some guests don’t need to depart right away, you might plan an early afternoon outing like a local souvenir shopping trip.

PHOTOGRAPHY: HEATHER NAN PHOTOGRAPHY; DESIGN BY SASHA SOUZA EVENTS

Whether held in your hometown or a far-flung locale, wedding weekends give you and your guests more quality time to bond and celebrate than the standard one-day affair. You might not have seen some of your guests for years and other family and friends often, but perhaps not often enough. From the welcome party to farewell brunch, a wedding weekend gives you ample opportunities to entertain all of your loved ones with fun, memory-making, personalized events and details.

WHAT WE ❤ ABOUT WEDDING WEEKENDS ❤ A multiday wedding is more affordable than you might think: Not every meal has to be a formal sit-down, and some events (the rehearsal dinner, for example) may be hosted by parents, which makes them free to you. ❤ Guests get more value out of their travel and lodging expenses when there’s more for them to enjoy. ❤ There are plenty of photo ops with your guests. ❤ You get hours of opportunities to infuse family and cultural traditions into your celebration.

Beyond the beach: locations & themes Vineyard

❤ Of course, a winery-hopping tour is a winning idea that guests love, and most vineyard area hotels will likely have fabulous wine-pairing catering options, plus fabulous views for outdoor celebrations. Activities abound: Wine country towns often host festivals, and there are plenty of quaint shops to visit plus notable chef-owned eateries.

MENU IDEAS

Chef Gustavo Rios, executive chef of Solage Calistoga resort in California, suggests “sweet cherry tomatoes stuffed with fresh ricotta and fino verde basil, petite legumes à la nicoise with marjoram and tempura of baby fava beans with Meyer lemon mayonnaise.” Charcuterie and cheese platters, and locally grown menu items complete the tasty fare. “A party in the vineyard’s tasting room is a great way to get the weekend off to a fun and energetic start,” says Kim Pennel-Conte, director of catering and conference services at CordeValle, A Rosewood Resort in San Martin, California. “At CordeValle, we like to do the welcome party cocktail-style and serve wines from the vineyard with lots of passed hors d’oeuvres that showcase fresh California ingreWELCOME BASKET IDEAS dients. To get people • Bottle stoppers talking to one another, • Wine journal our winemakers mingle • Coasters with the crowd and • Cheese knife and cheese share tasting notes and ID flag sets stories about the wines • Bottles of wine or champagne • Mini summer sausage trios and the winemaking process.”

Surprise guests with a different treat in their hotel room each night, such as fresh-baked oatmeal cookies or chocolate candy.

WEEKEND PLANNING ESSENTIALS • SAVE THE DATES should be sent out 6-8 months before the big day, and can be sent up to a year in advance for destination weddings. This will give guests plenty of time to plan for any necessary travel and assist in securing competitive rates, say the etiquette experts at The Wedding Shop by Shutterfly. Details can be confirmed and shared with guests closer to the event or updated through your wedding website. • MAKE IT CLEAR when guests will be expected to pay for their own expenses. The best way to do this is through your invitation or wedding website wording. For instance: “On Friday evening, we’ll head out to a country bar for drinks and dancing. ❤ Think Cape Cod, Mystic, Newport… those breezy, quaint towns by the shore often hold sweet family memories of sand, salt and sun-filled vacations, sailing and watching sunsets over the ocean. If you’re hosting an intimate wedding, you might consider having guests stay together in a rented beach house or a more traditional bed and breakfast. Beyond the typical water-centric activites such as sailing, water-skiing and paddleboarding, landlubbers can partake in the likes of beach walks, antiquing and museum visits.

MENU IDEAS

Provide transportation for guests who don’t have cars. Enlist volunteer drivers and make full use of your hotel’s free shuttle service.

Serve lobsters, clams (quintessential clambake fare), or raise the gourmet level with Chef Rios’s suggestions of “barbecued oysters, and mini crab rolls with avocado green goddess and salt-andvinegar chips.” Shots of clam chowder or lobster bisque warm up a cool evening, as does sitting around a bonfire on the beach or a fire pit on a restaurant or hotel terrace.

Winter Resort

❤ Spectacular scenery and winter sports add beauty and adventure to your wedding weekend events. Beyond drinks at the lodge, there’s skiing, horseback riding in the snow, hot-tubbing, snowmobiling and the resort’s spa to enjoy.

MENU IDEAS Go full-on gourmet with confit lamb shoulder with caramelized fuji apples, cheesy spaetzle with poached eggs and black truffles, doughnuts with cinnamon-cardamom sugar, and pistachio ice cream affogato (topped with espresso). Add in soup shots and hot spiked toddies for a tasty winter-themed menu. Kristin Polhemus, owner and creative director at Reveriemade in Princeton, New Jersey, says, “For dessert, I love a hot chocolate drinking station. Guests can choose classic hot chocolate, or they can add fun elements like peppermint, cinnamon or chipotle.” TIMING IS EVERYTHING • SPACE OUT ACTIVITIES so your guests don’t feel drained by racing from one event to the next and will have time to get back to the hotel, shower and change into the next event’s appropriate attire. • ALLOW FOR ENOUGH DOWNTIME so that guests can make plans amongst themselves, relax by the hotel pool, explore the area or enjoy some alone time. • PLAN SHORTER EVENTS, not an all-day hike or endless touring excursion.

WELCOME BASKET IDEAS • Snowflake-motif mittens • Fun knit ski hats or headbands • Frosted coasters • SPF lip balm • Hot chocolate mix packets • S’mores package of graham crackers, chocolate bars and marshmallows • Locally brewed bottles of beer

Camping or "Glamping" ❤ Weddings held at breezy rustic sites— some truly camplike, most more luxe interpretations—are becoming popular, whether you or your fiancé were once happy campers or simply love the casual outdoorsy vibe of carefree summer days gone by. “Glamping” adds in glam decor elements like lighting effects, crystals and chandeliers hung from trees, and lush fabric drapings in tents. Guests can join you in kayak races or on nature hikes and horseback trail rides.

MENU IDEAS How about adding homemade gourmet marshmallows to s’mores fixings, and a “hobo” dinner of beef short ribs, yellow finn potatoes, and cipollini onions cooked in the coals. Hotdogs, hamburgers, pulled-pork sandwiches, cornbread, popcorn and classic ice cream sandwiches evoke fun camp memories.

WELCOME BASKET IDEAS • “Care packages” with mini pampering items, packaged snacks and a pair of socks for a take on what parents would send to kids at camp • Mosquito repellent • Citronella travel candle tin • Playing cards • Bandannas • Blackberry jam, paying tribute to berry-picking memories at camp

Dude Ranch

Take your guests’ accessibility needs into consideration. If Grandma uses a walker, or if one of your ’maids will be far along in her pregnancy, a challenging hike might not be the best idea.

❤ Head out to the ranch for westernflair activities like horseback riding, roping lessons, archery, fly fishing and campfire cookouts in breathtaking natural WELCOME BASKET IDEAS scenery.

MENU IDEAS

• Packets of barbecue rub • Ranch logo drink bottles or cozies • Beer bottle openers • “Little bottles of whiskey,” says Fowler • Sheriff badges or toy horses for kids

Chef Rios suggests “bison sliders, empanadas and churros,” and prime rib, southern-fried chicken, roasted pork, sliders and breakfast burritos with slow-cooked beans and cornbread for authentic western flavor. Again, s’mores by the campfire are always a hit with guests. Lottie Fowler, event planner at Fort Worth, Texasbased Grit and Gold Event Co., adds, “For an after-wedding breakfast, we serve southern Texas toast, biscuits with chocolate on top and muffins.” 

WELL

Yes, you can get your guy involved in wedding planning.

GROOMED

o he’s the perfect guy—but a less-thanperfect groom? We chose four common dilemmas brides report when trying to get their guys to lend a hand, and then asked male wedding experts how to deal.

DILEMMA #1: THE NOD-AND-SMILE GROOM

If your guy is always saying, “Whatever you think, honey,” maybe he thinks his opinion has no weight. “Guys get excited when they feel they’re actually being heard,” says Craig Michaels, author of Thirty to Wife: The Tell-All Groom’s Guide to Weddings. Be sure to really take his comments into consideration, so he notices. • Ignite some enthusiasm by coming up with a few out-ofthe-box ideas for the wedding. “Getting married in a beloved pal’s backyard or at one of your favorite restaurants—that sometimes resonates more with guys than the typical wedding venue,” Michaels continues. “If he’s in charge of the transportation, suggest he look at renting a BMW or antique car.”

DILEMMA #2: THE OVERBEARING GROOM

Groomzillas are few and far between, but some guys do go overboard. If you’re trying to convince him that you shouldn’t serve pork so as not to offend your relatives who

keep kosher, don’t pout or get argumentative. Just tell him exactly why this thing is important to you. Expect to talk and to listen. “It’s a cliché, but marriage is a compromise,” adds Michaels. “If you make a really compelling case, hopefully he’ll understand and back down. Of course, keep in mind that might just mean that you will have to agree to HINT enter the reception to Make the process fun: After you’ve both spent the theme song from time with a vendor, plan to ‘Rocky.’ ” go for lunch or dinner at a

THE LAZY GROOM

If your guy refuses to budge from the couch to do anything wedding-related, “make sure there’s some balance between his wedding duties and free time,” says Michaels, “If you must have him taste appetizers he can barely pronounce,

network as allies. “He may think you’re being unreasonable,” says Fowler. “But if his mom or his brother says the same thing to him, he could see things differently.” “Keep emphasizing that your wedding is a once-in-a-

lifetime event, so he should enjoy the ride,” says Michaels.

• Resist the urge to nag.

DILEMMA #4:

“Be encouraging,” says Shandon Fowler, author of The Groom’s Instruction Manual. Positive reinforcement, like saying, “You’re such a great fiancé—thank you for coming along,” can work wonders, Fowler says. • Enlist people in his support

THE TOO TRADITIONAL GROOM

Grooms are pretty likely to get involved with wedding planning nowadays. But if he wants to stick with tradition, booking the band, honeymoon and nothing else, there are steps you can take. • Make a detailed list of all the

• Also, try to be a bit forgiving. Maybe he’s been working

quietly in the background, corralling groomsmen’s tux measurements, booking the limo and writing vows. “But if he’s not, and it still bothers you, go back to your list and say, ‘Here’s the 75 percent of the things I’m doing, and here’s the 25 percent of the things you’re doing,’ ” says Fowler. “Always use logic.” ¢

101BUDGET TIPS

HERE’S HOW TO SAVE ON EVERYTHING FROM COCKTAIL HOUR TO CAKE-CUTTING, FLOWERS TO PHOTOS—PLUS LOTS MORE.

1

Create a comparison chart to track what is included in the price for each venue you’re considering. One company may not include linens and the cake, for example, while another company does. Many public spaces like parks or the local village green may be available to rent at a low fee. However, if the space is not equipped to handle events, you’ll have to rent everything from napkins to tables and chairs. Make sure you come out ahead. Choose an unusual venue, such as an aquarium, a zoo, a gallery or a historical site. Site fees are not high and you’ll save on decor because the venue already supplies ambience. But the same ca-

2

3

veat goes as for public spaces: Figure in what you'll have to spend on rentals. Hold your ceremony and your reception in the same place. You’ll save yourselves multiple site fees as well as transportation from one location to the other. If you belong to a community organization or to the military, you may have access, at low cost, to a venue belonging to them. Depending on your venue, you may not need to decorate extensively. If you marry outdoors at a winery, for example, there’s not much you'll need to add to the gorgeous vineyard backdrop. Rent a vacation home. Even if the owners charge you a week’s worth of rent for the day, it may still be equal to or less than renting a tradi-

4 5

6 7

tional reception venue. Don’t forget your alma mater—these usually rent for a few hundred dollars. If a family member has a scenic property, find out if you can hold your wedding there. One couple held their wedding on the Wyoming ranch where the groom had grown up. Unique and cost-conscious!

8 9

10

If you’re a city-dweller, leave town for your wedding. One Boston bride saved more than $50 per person by holding her wedding in Burlington, Vermont. For a garden wedding, look into renting a historic mansion; many of these have gardens that are included in the deal. You may find, as

SET YOUR SITES

did one couple, that the mansion they rented had no time limit, and the fee was less than half a hall rental. Look for reception packages. Holding your event at a venue that provides catering and food-service items will save on extra rentals. Save on your rehearsal dinner site by throwing a backyard barbecue or a picnic in a local park, both of which can cost considerably less than a dinner in a restaurant. Accept a post-wedding brunch at a relative’s home as a wedding gift. You may find that in lieu of a gift, a friend or relative will be thrilled to host this event in his or her home. Trim the length of your reception. Even doing a three-hour party instead of four or five will save you money. Trust us, everyone will enjoy themselves just as much. Determine early on what you can (and cannot) spend and stick to it. One rule of thumb: Food, beverage and venue should come to half of your budget. Most venues charge more for Saturday night, so go for a reception on a Thursday, Friday or Sunday night instead. Consider the season— you’re likely to get a better price for a venue in January than you would for the same spot in June. Because the guest list will be smaller, consider a destination wedding. It may cost less than a traditional event held in your hometown. Check into bed and breakfast venues in your area and place firm limits on your guest list. When deciding between an indoor or outdoor space, figure in the cost of a tent rental: If it rains, a tent is worth every penny.

DRINK UP

22

Forget the full bar. Instead, serve beer and wine (both red and white) with one or two signature cocktails that you’ve personalized with a cute name and your wedding colors. If you're holding your event near a vineyard or microbrewery, buy your wines and beers from them. Keeping to local products gives your celebration a special touch (and it’s cheaper). Don’t forget to have some inexpensive (nonalcoholic) drinks on hand. Consider fresh lemonade in tall, sugar-rimmed glasses for a warm-weather wedding or sparkling water with wedges of orange, lemon or lime. Top shelf isn’t a high priority. Choose mid-shelf liquors for significant savings (guests usually can’t tell the difference). Another way to approach this: If the best brands are important to you, indulge your guests with just a few choices of these but close the bar early and offer just wine and beer as the party winds down. For an added festive touch, dress up your signature drinks with garnishes, like orange slices or mini fruit kebabs on toothpicks. Garnishes are usually provided free of charge by the venue or caterer, but give the appearance that you’ve spent more. Eliminate shots or any drinks that make use of a number of liquors— these all raise your bar tab and aren’t necessary for guests to have fun.

23 24 25 26 27

28

If you’re stocking your own bar, do your homework. Check winespectator.com for less-expensive wine vintages. Corkage fees (a charge for opening bottles of wine or liquor) may be up to $10 a bottle or even more. Try to negotiate these out of your contract. Close the open bar an hour early and offer coffee. You’ll save hundreds of dollars; even better, guests will have a chance to sober up before they head out to the road. Make sure the waitstaff knows absolutely not to pre-open bottles or clear away glasses from tables that aren’t empty. Speaking of coffee, forgo a coffee bar offering expensive liqueurs with java and instead treat guests to a rich brew with flavored syrups. Or serve espresso before sending everyone home.

29 30 31

MUSIC NOTES

32

Want a live band? Hire talented students from a local music school to perform at the ceremony. Ask to hear them play—they may be just as good as professionals, and charge you less. And stay local: If a band has to travel for more than an hour, your costs will increase. If you’re deciding whether to go with a fivepiece band or a DJ, you’ll save at least half by choosing the DJ. Or, why not be your own DJ? Create customized playlists for the ceremony and the reception on your phone or laptop, hook up to rented speakers and enjoy! Negotiate a deal that you like. The closer you are to the wedding date (six months or less), the likelier it is that the band leader will work on your terms. Find out if one or two musicians can perform for the ceremony or cocktail hour as well. If your band offers a singer who also plays an instrument, you’ll save money. And remember: You don’t need more than one of each instrument—one saxophone will do as well as two or three. ➺

33

34 35

36

The traditional wedding cake is usually covered with fondant, but keep in mind that it’s expensive because it requires extra labor to make. You may want to go with buttercream instead. One caveat: For an outdoor wedding, go with fondant since buttercream or cream cheese will melt in the sun. Consider cupcakes. These save money because they require much less intricate decoration. Have a small cake for the cake-cutting ceremony and supplement it with a sheet cake, served from the kitchen. Go with fresh flowers. The amount of labor that goes into creating flowers out of sugar ups the price of the cake. Consider your humble local grocery store. One bride’s supermarket bakery made her an elegant confection, based on a magazine photo, for less than $200.

37 38 39 40

FABULOUS FOOD

46

At the cocktail hour save costs by handpassing pricier appetizers like shrimp, scallops or other seafood items. When guests self-serve, they usually consume 40 percent more. Have a lunch or an afternoon tea reception instead of a sit-down dinner. Guests tend to drink less during the day, so you’ll save on liquor costs. If you prefer an evening reception, but still want to stick to a budget, consider a desserts-only reception. Specify on the invitation that you will be serving desserts, so that guests don’t expect a full meal. Offer a delicious array of sweets: pastries, pies, mousses and a dramatic flaming treat like Bananas Foster. To ac-

47 48

41

If you like fruit fillings, think seasonal. Strawberries can cost triple the price out of season so consult with your baker to stay on budget. The baker may calculate the price by averaging the cost of different flavors, so plan carefully. If you have the most expensive flavor on the bottom layer (the biggest), it will cost more. Traditionally, couples save the cake’s top layer to share on their first anniversary. If you and your fiancé don’t think you’ll be ready to dig in, forgo that extra layer and save some dough. Have a dessert buffet featuring pastries and other sweets and save money by having only a small cake for your cake cutting. The cheesecake option can be a boon because it costs less. Arrange the cheesecakes on pedestals of varying heights—they will resemble tiers—and offer sauces, such as chocolate and kiwi.

42

company, serve champagne or prosecco and specialty coffees and teas. Another increasingly popular choice is the cocktail party reception. And with good reason: You’ll save thousands on food and decorations; after all, you can forgo big floral arrangements for your tables and adorn small cocktail tables with candles and modest bunches of blooms. Hand-pass hors d’oeuvres like mini pigsin-a-blanket, grilled cheese sandwiches and mini quiches. On a multi-tiered table offer finger foods like Italian breads, olives, artichoke hearts and cheeses (at room temperature), finger fruits and salads. Consider a refined winetasting reception. Guests can sample from an array of small dishes at food stations, each matched with a special wine. Printed cards can

on small tapas-style plates, guests won’t notice or care if the fare is quite simple. Crudites don’t actually have to be, well, crude just because you’re on a budget. How about an array of artichoke hearts, broccoli florets and radishes cut in shapes—instead of carrot sticks and celery. Comparison shop for cocktail-party offerings. Seafood like mussels or calimari are usually half the price of shrimp cocktail. Your caterer should be able to offer guidance about other lowercost selections. Instead of traditional cocktail-party fare, go for cozy comfort food like macaroni and cheese in martini glasses, mini grilled cheese bites and tiny crab cakes. (Hint: These low-cost goodies are guaranteed to be crowd-pleasers!)

explain the pairing. Go for a rich look at a low cost: Caterers often suggest putting out lots of lush salads and grilled vegetables in unusual platters, like colorful bowls and big woks, for a great presentation. Also keep in mind that people eat with their eyes first, and if you display food beautifully, as

51

55

Theme stations are always popular, and a fajita or Thai station are not budget-busters. Consider pyramids of basmati and jasmine rice, egg noodles and condiments. Other options: a mashed-potato bar where guests can top spuds with bacon and sour cream, or a panini bar that serves grilled sandwiches.

CAKES & DESSERTS

56

How about a pierogi bar? These potatostuffed morsels of dough, served with cheese or spinach and a sauce, are a terrific variation on low-cost comfort food. A perfect (and inexpensive) appetizer option for a cool-weather wedding: Serve miniature cups of soup like clam chowder or acorn squash. In warm weather, consider mini cups of cold soup like gazpacho. Two kinds of stations to skip: first, the raw bar, which will be quite expensive; second: a carving station. Prime rib, ham and pork loin are too heavy—and costly—for cocktail-hour fare. After nibbling on appetizers, your guests will not need a five-course dinner. Three will do—salad, an entrée and dessert. Use a delicious sauce on a simple pasta or chicken dish to up the wow factor. Ask your caterer for lowcost recommendations. A sophisticated salad course—like spring greens—can elegantly offset a less costly entrée. Forgo the filet. Your caterer can show you price options for different cuts of lamb and pork as well as beef. Braised boneless short ribs are a great choice. For savings of up to 20 percent, consider family-style dishes: think big bowls of pasta or platters of sliced meat that guests can pass around the table. Add interest to pasta —a good budget choice—by considering more unusual varieties, like mushroom ravioli or spinach and cheese tortellini. Beware the buffet option. It won’t necessarily cost less than a sit-down

dinner because you have to supply more food than you would for a plated meal. Do a cost comparison before you make a decision. Cut out the bubbly; guests can toast with whatever they’re drinking. Serve a duet plate for every guest. For example, you might serve a plate of beef medallions and grilled shrimp or crab cakes. You’ll save on the amount of food you offer—and on costs. Before deciding on a seafood entrée, find out from the caterer what will be in season at the time of your wedding: A seasonal choice will save you hundreds of dollars. Have your caterer patronize local farms for produce; not only is it fresher and better-tasting but also more cost-effective. Consider a vegetarian entrée option. These are usually less expensive, and becoming ever more popular. For side dishes, consider risotto instead of potatoes for something inexpensive and a bit unusual. A simple meal will seem special when you consider the visuals. Colorfulvegetables on low-cost chicken can make all the difference. Consider a modified DIY approach: One groom’s cousin baked enchiladas, and the couple ordered more food from local Mexican outposts. Hint: Don’t make the wedding meal yourselves—that's too DIY for your own sanity! To feed your photographer and musicians, offer lower-cost food—this may cost 60 percent less per person. If children will be attending, choose a caterer who offers free or half-priced meals for kids.

TRANSPORTATION

76

Instead of renting a limo, go with a less costly option like a party van from a local carrental company. Whether you decide to book a limo or a van or any other sort of transportation, do this at least six months in advance of the wedding in order to get the best deal. Ask about any special wedding packages a car-rental company may have. A typical one may offer three hours of service, a bottle of champagne and a tuxedo-bedecked driver for about $300 (depending on your location). Remember that white limos will always cost you more than black or silver ones. Don’t have the car that brings you to the ceremony wait for you all day—hourly rates will add up quickly. Have a different car pick you up later, after the reception.

77

78 79

Vegan and/or vegetable-forward cuisine options can be considerably less expensive than meats and seafood, and will be appreciated by many of your guests

INVITATIONS

80

If you, your fiancé or your friends are DIY-ers, consider creating your own invites by hand or high-quality printer. Your crafts store will have invitation and program kits—you can really get some unique effects this way. Don’t pay extra to have your invitations assembled; just get the bridal party together and set up an assembly line. If you have a friend who happens to be a terrific calligrapher, have her address your invitations as her gift to you—rather than paying someone else to do so. Calligraphic fonts that look like the real thing are readily available. Free font sources: searchfreefonts. com, highfonts.com, dafont.com. Choose basic black ink for your invitations and other stationery. Prices go up if you choose colored inks or a deluxe foil-stamp process. Also, colored paper and unconventional shapes tend to be more expensive than white or ecru or the standard square or rectangle. Order your thank-you notes when you order your invitations. Some stationers give bulk discounts. ➺

FLOWERS & DECOR

cost. As Melissa Paul, a wedding planner with Evantine Design in Philadelphia, points out: “It’s less expensive to buy an apple than an orchid!” Sure, peonies may be your favorite flower, but if you’re tying the knot in winter, these springtime beauties will cost you a pretty penny. A good florist should be able to suggest in-season blooms that get the look and feel of your out-of-season favorites. Be sure to do your research on flowers (go to bridalguide.com/flowersbyseason to learn what blooms will be in season at the time of your wedding). If your wedding day happens to fall on Easter, Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day, you may pay more for your flowers. On the other hand, scheduling a wedding around a holiday can work in your favor: Your reception spot may already be decked out— saving you a small fortune! Less is more. The more elaborate the arrangements, the higher your bill. For simple elegance, consider a few roses, tulips or even orchids submerged in water. A cluster of rose petals floating in water in clear bowls are pleasing to look at, too. Be sure to use all kinds of candles to good advantage: Place flickering votives, pillar candles or tapers between floral arrangements and create a stylish look on a mere shoestring. Keep ceremony flowers simple by only placing arrangements near the spot where you’ll be exchanging vows, not on every aisle

90

91

92

seat or pew. Must you place flowers on tables? Of course not. Pick one focal point—perhaps the entrance or the front corners of the room—and place just one gorgeous arrangement there. Adorn plain white tablecloths by layering organza or tulle on top (which costs just a few dollars a yard). Or you may want to forgo the linens entirely and cover your tables with mirrors or frosted glass. The finished look will be

95 96

artfully glitzy, yet the cost of this dazzling display is surprisingly modest. Rent colored or textured chargers (choose bamboo or rattan) to add a simple but distinctive detail to each place setting. Forgo expensive silver vases in favor of clear glass. Or shop local flea markets for vintage containers of different but complementary designs for your table—you’ll achieve a unique and stylish look at small cost.

97

PICTURE PERFECT

98

If a photographer you love is out of range of your budget, find out if you can wait till after the wedding to order proofs or albums. That way, you can put some of your gift money to good use. Point and shoot videography is the least expensive option (around $1,700). For this fee, you’ll get nutsand-bolts footage of your wedding. Tell the videographer to avoid gimmicky graphics and not to ask guests “to say a few words” to the camera (if you find this tacky). With plain “point and shoot,” the best treatment is simple and classic. The most surefire way of finding a photographer and videographer who are right for you is to get recommendations from friends and family. However, be sure to carefully consider the work of many pros before making a decision about whom to hire—and always keep in mind that the most expensive choice is not necessarily the best. Photography is no place to skimp. Your photos are the tangible mementoes of your wedding day—but if you do know someone who is just getting started, you may get a more affordable deal. A caveat: Make sure the work is top quality. Ask for references from former brides and grooms who have used the pro’s services. ¢

Have artistic friends pitch in on your wedding. A friend who’s got a penchant for flowers can handle your table arrangements and floral details. Another way to go: Hire a florist to do just one arrangement and then have your friends and family copy it for all the tables. Potted plants make attractive table decor—and cost considerably less than floral arrangements do. Make the most of greenery in other ways; put plenty of it in your centerpieces to save money on flowers. Potted blooms are also a less expensive choice; check at your local nursery. Another option: Incorporate locally grown flowers and grasses into your arrangements. Buy flowers wholesale in a local market or online, and pay a florist to do simple centerpieces. Want to keep things really easy? Do one look in abundance and make an impact. Place tons of branches, like curly willow or dogwood, in urns or tall glass vases from the dollar store; for a bit more flair, hang LED tea lights from them with ribbons in your wedding colors. Try groupings of the same flower in different hues for an affordably stylish look. Cluster vases of different sizes in interesting configurations on tables. Use fruits and vegetables to fill out arrangements; this way, you can create a sense of colorful abundance without excessive

Your wedding is a month away. Here, beauty experts chime in on how to look and feel your best on the big day.

*

Have more than one makeup trial. 2 WEEKS TO GO

•CLEAN UP YOUR BROWS: It’s best to get those brows in shape two weeks prior and then touch up a couple days before the ceremony to ensure less irritation, says Melanie Coba, European Wax Center’s national brand ambassador. •CUT OUT DAIRY AND PROCESSED FOODS: These can cause bloating and digestive issues, while refined sugars accelerate aging, free-radical damage and stiffening of collagen, Snyder says. •TRADE IN BEER FOR WINE: Cut back on dehydrating and vitamin-depleting alcohol, Snyder suggests. If celebrating, stick to red wine. Reds tend to be high in antioxidants, not as hard on the liver as other alcohols and don't induce bloating.

3 WEEKS TO GO

•MEET WITH YOUR MAKEUP ARTIST: She was booked 6-8 months ago but it’s time to get better acquainted so you feel really comfortable with her, says Ashlee Glazer, director of makeup artistry for Pucker. Having more than one trial is important—make sure you factor this into the original agreement. “Bridal showers and rehearsal dinners are great opportunities to test your wedding look.”

•SWEAT IT OUT: Be sure to stick to your routine in the weeks before the wedding. “Daily exercise is important: It not only tones your body and boosts your confidence, but it also helps flush toxins, improve circulation and relieve stress,” says Kimberly Snyder, nutritionist and New York Times best-selling author of the Beauty Detox series and Radical Beauty.

•REJUVENATE YOUR SKIN: To ensure your skin is looking its best Dr. Bradley S. Bloom, New York board-certified dermatologist, suggests two PICO Genesis laser treatments at four and two weeks before the wedding. PICO Genesis is about a 15-minute treatment with minimal downtime that removes uneven sun pigmentation and damage for a brighter complexion.

•HAVE YOUR LAST FACIAL: "Stay away from 'trending' facials," says Alicia Yoon, licensed esthetician, CEO and founder of Peach & Lily. "Consult with your esthetician in advance so she can determine a treatment specifically tailored to your needs. Stick to super-hydrating and soothing spa facials from a professional salon or use athome products like the K-Beauty Bridal Radiance Regimen to avoid irritation.” •BOOK AN EXFOLIATING FACE AND BODY SCRUB: Sloughing off dead skin will not only aid in getting an even spray tan and smoother wax results, but also allows for better makeup application. •WHITEN YOUR TEETH: For a brighter smile, Dr. Bijan Gohari, DMD prosthodontist, suggests using Supersmile 6 Minutes To A Whiter Smile Kit twice a day.

1 DAY TO GO

•SCHEDULE YOUR EYEBROW AND BIKINI WAX: If opting to remove any unwanted hair on your face or body, go two to three days before so any post-treatment redness disappears, Coba suggests.

•GET YOUR FINAL MANICURE AND PEDICURE: Glazer suggests a gel polish, which will last through the honeymoon. Try one of LeChat’s Perfect Match sets, which includes a gel polish and perfectly matched lacquer for touch ups, and has a range of over 200 shades to choose from.

•GET GLOWING: Spray tans offer a healthy glow without compromising your skin's well-being. Go two days before to ensure your faux glow has time to develop. •RINSE OFF: Wait eight to ten hours before showering post appointment.

3 pm Spray tan

•TEST OUT THE TAN: “Before your big day you should do a trial run for every service (hair, makeup and skincare),” says Marlena Orlowska, makeup artist at Paul Labrecque Salon and Spa. If you want the look of a tan, that also includes your bronzing treatment. Consult with your artist about how tan you want to be and the timing of your wedding. Do a trial and see if the application is too light or dark.

1 WEEK TO GO

2 DAYS TO GO

•GET GLOSSY: “For optimal color get a gloss treatment as close to the big day as you can,” says Bb.colorist Robert Mefford, “It’s the best way to have your hair color looking picture-perfect.”

PHOTOGRAPHY: TERRY DOYLE

4 WEEKS TO GO

•DON’T STRESS: Last minute breakout? Yoon suggests Peach Slices Acne Spot Dots, which can help reduce blemishes within hours and can be worn under makeup, as they are transparent. •KEEP CALM: “Drink lots of water to keep inflammation at bay,” says Yoon. “Before snoozing, use a sheet mask like Peach Slices Original Glow Sheet Mask." Take the time to Zen out before bed and turn down your big-day nerves. Be sure to get quality beauty sleep by heading to bed extra early.

* Sheet masks

lock in moisture for soft, hydrated skin. DAY OF

•START SMART WITH A LIGHT, HEALTHY BREAKFAST: To begin the day, Snyder suggests drinking hot water with lemon and her signature Glowing Green Smoothie, which includes spinach, apples and bananas. Eat lighter foods, such as fruits, first and then follow with heavier proteins and starches—“following this principle will reduce bloating on the big day.” •ALLOW FOR AT LEAST 3 HOURS TO GET READY: Avoid being stressed and pressed for time—you’ll want to enjoy every moment. Wear a robe or buttondown shirt that can be easily removed after your hair and makeup are done. •ENJOY!

hristian and Samantha dated for seven years and as he planned his proposal he wanted it to be wow-worthy for his future wife. Samantha came home to a trail of rose petals and flickering candles that led her outside where she discovered a stunning archway covered in even more roses and twinkling lights. It was there that Christian asked her to marry him and through joyful tears, she said “Yes!” Initially aiming for a destination wedding, the couple ultimately selected to host their nuptials at Samantha’s family home in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. “We wanted a formal backyard wedding that felt romantic and chic,” said the bride. With no specific theme in mind, the couple opted for decor that transported guests into a warm, fairy tale-like environment. Selecting a color scheme of green, white and blush, the couple played up an amorous vibe with a reception site decked out in florals, sparkling lights and glimmering candles. Table decor was inspired by the bride’s dress and showcased gorgeous elements of lace and blush tones. Despite being thrown a weather-related curveball just days before the wedding that left the grounds flooded with rainwater, luck was on the couple’s side and the site was up and running in time for the blissful day. “Our summer wedding was filled with magical surprises,” said the couple. “A day dressed with romance, family, love, laughter, and despite a little bit of rain, a whole lot of sunshine from all around.”—Anna Smutny

After three years of dating, Manny decided it was time to finally pop the question. The soon-to-be groom asked his sister (a professional photographer) to stage a photoshoot for him and his future wife with a secret plan to propose. While photos were being taken, he got down on one knee and asked Cessie to marry him, and of course she said “Yes!” The globetrotting couple originally considered a destination wedding, but ultimately decided on their hometown in Florida. “Both my fiancé and I are passionate about travel but chose to move the wedding to Miami,” said the bride. To play up the travel theme, the seating chart was set against a world map, with tables named for various cities and countries. Guests were treated to travel-inspired gifts and the wedding cake was embellished with airplanes and a map. “Our life has always been an adventure and I wanted our wedding to reflect that,” the bride said. The couple upped the glam factor with golden candelabras, sparkling table covers and raised floral centerpieces. Guests mingled happily during a cocktail hour, after which everyone sat down to a delicious menu of a mixed-green salad, filet mignon and eggplant lasagna as well as a sweet midnight snack of churros and Cuban fritas. “We were surrounded by friends and family to help celebrate our love and our wedding day was exactly as we envisioned it,” said the couple. “A beautiful, emotional, glamorous, full-oflove, rollercoaster that was complete with incredible food, nonstop dancing and fun.” —Anna Smutny

A South Asian Dream Wedding in a Caribbean Paradise

At Beaches® Resort in Turks & Caicos

I

f you imagine having your South Asian dream destination wedding in a Caribbean paradise, take a cue from newly married couple Dhruva and Rittika. They chose Beaches Resorts for the most special celebration of their lifetime, because Beaches is the world’s only all-inclusive family resorts that lets couples create their dream wedding and personalize every detail. The couple wanted their cultural traditions to play a central role in their wedding celebration, and they knew nobody could do that better than Beaches. After all, with Beaches Customizable Weddings, brides and grooms have the ability to mix and match endless décor options to reflect their personal sense of style for the various ceremonies and receptions—everything from the colors and abundant floral, to Mandap style and venue locations, to place settings, table décor, menus, bars and more. In the months leading up to their luxurious South Asian destination wedding, Dhruva and Rittika worked closely with their personal Beaches Wedding Entourage to bring the vision of their wedding weekend to life. They were able to incorporate all traditional elements and more into their weekend-long celebration, which included a Haldi, where the seated couple were surrounded by bright orange and yellow fabrics and strands of marigolds. Family and friends gathered around to spread turmeric paste onto the faces of the bride and groom to ward off evil spirits and bring them prosperity.

Later that evening, the couple threw a grand Sangeet celebration, where family and friends performed their choreographed dances beneath an arching dome draped in jewel-toned fabric. The next day began with a stunning beach ceremony under a tented Mandap, followed by more celebrations with a sunset cocktail hour, evening dinner reception complete with entertainment and dancing, a latenight S’mores and Sweets bonfire and finally an after party at Club Liquid. Like Dhruva and Rittika, you’ll be able to incorporate your South Asian traditions into your wedding at Beaches by working with a resourceful wedding team who will go above and beyond to make sure every detail is in place, whether that means sourcing special items not ordinarily part of Beaches’ extensive inventory, or adapting items at the resort with décor, like the golf cart that was transformed for Dhruva’s Baraat. Equipped with a genuine Tandoor oven, and onsite executive chefs that can customize your Indian cuisine menus, Beaches 5-Star Global Gourmet™ culinary team are able to whip up authentic, mouthwatering South Asian dishes, like those served for Dhruva and Rittika’s celebration. Of course, one of the best reasons for a destination wedding at Beaches is that, after the vows are exchanged, you can get your honeymoon started while your guests enjoy an amazing vacation where everything is included for adults and kids alike.

REAL DESTINATION WEDDING

GUATEMALA A MIAMI COUPLE SHARED THE AMOR AT THIS CHARMING CENTRAL AMERICAN VILLAGE HIDEAWAY.

PHOTOGRAPHY: DAVID CIFUENTES OF FOTOH!

BY JENNA MAHONEY

“I FELL IN LOVE WITH Guatemala when I first visited in 2013, says Luisana née Suegart Cruz. “The remoteness of it, the colors, the charm, the culture—it’s unforgettable.” Add the fact that her first weekend getaway with her now husband Jeremy Cruz was to a wedding in the Colonial Guatemalan town of Antigua, hosting their own celebration in the Central American country was destined. “Guatemala became our spot,” Luisana explains. The Miami couple got engaged in photogenic Antigua and celebrated months later at Casa Palopó, an intimate hideaway perched above Lake Atitlan. ➺

Luisana and Jeremy seal it with a beso in front of the church.

REAL DESTINATION WEDDING

The couple took a local tuk-tuk to the church.

TAKE HOME

Overlooking Lake Atitlan.

PICTURE PERFECT “Lake Atitlan can and will take anyone’s breath away,” says Luisana. “The location is absolutely photogenic. And it’s a hidden gem that is transformative and intimate,” she explains. The crystalline body of water, framed by a trio of volcanoes and verdant hills topped by tiny villages, is actually a caldera—a volcano that collapsed into itself after a massive explosion. Boating (an activity the couple hosted for guests) is a hallmark activity. Hiking is, too—the Indian Nose Trail is especially spectacular at sunrise. The day-long trek up the San Pedro volcano promises unbeatable views.

Each of the 12 villages on the rim of Lake Atitlan is known for a particular tradition. Not only does that translate into up-close tours of familyrun producers, but it also means excellent shopping. Luisana’s picks include textiles (San Juan La Laguna is home to weaving cooperatives), handmade jewelry (Santiago has beading), coffee and champurradas (crisp, buttery sugar cookies).

The church ceremony.

“The outdoor fireplace that’s poolside at Casa Palopó’s villa is the perfect, romantic perch to enjoy the sunset with a glass of wine. It’s pure magic.” MANY BLESSINGS Shamanism—the spiritual practice of reaching altered states of consciousness to achieve transcendence—is widely practiced in the villages of Lake Atitlan. Visitors can receive blessings from the traditional local healers. The rituals often feature chanting, drumming, the burning of incense, and strategic placement of candles. At Casa Palopó, guests can request a private blessing, which often takes place on the highest point of the property at sundown.

Evening at Casa Palopó.

PAINT THE TOWN One of the charming pueblos is Santa Catarina Palopó, home to an equally quaint—and uber Instagrammable— church. A religious ceremony was important to the couple, who worked with their local parish to make sure they had the Catholic church’s blessing. As a bonus, the town was undergoing transformation via the “Pintando Santa Catarina Palopó” initiative, a project in which homes are painted with murals depicting Mayan heritage.

Cheers! to the couple.

Coffee was a welcome-bag treat.

LOCAL FLAVOR Guatemala may be best known for its coffee—Starbucks sources much of its java from the Central American country—but its cuisine is equally outstanding. “Our welcome dinner was 100% Guatemalan,” says Luisana. They served mini enchiladas, tostadas with guacamole and black beans, and mini quesadillas. There were Gallo beers (the national brew) and a rum bar featuring local spirits. The main attractions: A local woman, who handmade tortillas on a comal (smooth, flat griddle made of clay), and weavers, who demonstrated traditional Mayan textile techniques.

travel notes

Lake Atitlan is one of Guatemala’s most recognized sites. Its name—a Mayan word that means “the place where the rainbow gets its colors”—is as magical as the setting. Check into Casa Palopó and observe the natural kaleidoscope from one of its expansive, sun-drenched stone patios. Thanks to its intimate setting (there are just 15 guest rooms) and excellent personalized service, a stay at this decadent property positioned on the rim of the cobalt lake feels like being welcomed to an aunt’s grand home. ASPEN

Audrey and Neil Thompson pose on the roof of the Aspen Art Musuem.

CELEBRATING IN THIS MAGICAL MOUNTAIN SETTING, NEW YORKERS AUDREY AND NEIL SWAPPED VOWS IN PICTURE-PERFECT COLORADO.

CAPTION HERE VILLANI PHOTOGRAPHY PHOTOGRAPHY:

BY JENNA MAHONEY

“ASPEN IS OUR LOVE SPOT,” says Audrey Thompson neé Neidenbach, about the four-season Rocky Mountain destination where she and husband Neil hosted friends and family for a wedding weekend. “I grew up skiing in Aspen,” explains Audrey. And when Neil proposed on top of Snowmass Mountain (one of the main attractions of the photogenic city), the couple, who had spent “every anniversary for the last 10 years” at the stunning city, just knew they’d get hitched there too.

Aspen is magical all year.

rocky mountain high Sure, “Aspen holds a magical place in our hearts,” but the couple also chose the stunning locale for its photo-ready setting—it’s especially photogenic in September when the leaves are golden—and awesome offerings. Guests are able to explore the great outdoors—hiking (the picturesque Maroon Bells trek is a must), biking, horseback riding—and enjoy sophisticated amenities à go-go including fine dining, high-end shopping (hello, Prada), art galleries and cultural institutions (like the Aspen Art Museum, site of the couple’s reception). The museum hosts rotating singular contemporary exhibits with free admission. The views from the museum, which is positioned at the center of town, are unparalleled, especially from the expansive roof deck. Designed by a Pritzker Award winning architect, the building itself is an eco-cube enveloped in a woven woodlike material made of paper and resin.

hot plates Fantastic food is as much an Aspen marquee experience as spying celebs on the slopes. Every summer, the shimmering city hosts the Food & Wine Classic, a three-day celebration featuring celebrity chefs, innovative cooking demos, and a whole lot of sampling. Throughout the year, Audrey and Neil’s favorite spots include Steak House No. 316. “It has the best bar menu in town. You can get a fillet and frites for $23—that’s a steal in Aspen.” At the White House Tavern, the crispy chicken and macho salad are the best bets. And Pine Creek is the most romantic restaurant. “Take a horse-drawn sleigh under the stars to the restaurant tucked into the mountain scenery,” advises Audrey. ➺

There’s a free bus from Aspen to Snowmass yearround, so you don’t need to rent a car to ski or explore both mountains.

REAL DESTINATION WEDDING

CARRY ON As a regular visitor to Aspen (she goes three to five times a year), Audrey has a list of must-packs for everyone. Her key items include sunscreen, layers of activewear and athleisure, mountain-chic accessories (boots and hats) and a bathing suit. Yes—even in winter taking a dip in view of the mountains is a popular activity.

The Aspen Art Museum’s facade is made of paper and resin.

Audrey’s cousin conducted the ceremony.

ONE OF ASPEN’S MOST ICONIC AND ROMANTIC PLACES, the picturesque John Denver Sanctuary, is a four-acre garden robust with perennials, Aspen firs and rocky outcroppings with inscriptions by the eponymous—and prolific—singer/ songwriter. The meditative spot, complete with loads of seating for reflective moments, is also where Audrey’s cousin, along with their family priest, presided over the ceremony surrounded by the foliage’s golden hues of September.

aspen classic Hickory House, a finger-lickin’-good rib joint set just outside of town and site of the couple’s welcome dinner, is a local favorite thanks to its vintage (some may say “dive-y”) mountain decor complete with old-school snowshoes, black-and-white photos and, of course, loads of wood. The food is so remarkable that many regulars have it shipped to their non-Aspen homes throughout the year.

travel notes

The only ski-in/ski-out property on Aspen Mountain, the charming The Little Nell is a pampering enclave of 92 guest accommodations positioned at the base of the storied mountain. The bespoke rooms are as chic as the setting with plush decor touches, and soothing palettes of whites, greys and blues. All have fireplaces and oversize marble bathrooms with heated floors; most flaunt balconies. Original artwork is found throughout the pet-friendly resort. The pool and hot tub, both of which offer excellent views, are open all year. Spa treatments can be enjoyed in the expansive health center or in the comfort of your room. Other property standouts include the Sundeck—a gathering place positioned on the apex of the mountain and accessed only via gondola—and another peak amenity, the Aspen Mountain Club, which serves breakfast and lunch. The award-winning Element 47 restaurant with its expansive wine cellar and unparalleled contemporary presentations of local favorites is a culinary stalwart (room rates start at $1,200 a night; thelittlenell.com).

f there’s a paradise on earth, Guana, a private island resort that’s home to just 20 guest cottages and villas, seven beaches and seemingly endless activity amenities in the idyllic British Virgin Islands, may be it. The intimate resort is the sole inhabitant of an 850-acre, tropical foliage-dense mountainous island that’s latticed with hiking trails and framed by sugared sands. Alabama newlyweds Brandi and Gene Gill Jr. recently experienced the heaven-on-earth feeling of booking into this hideaway to celebrate their union (and her birthday). They shared some of their honeymoon highlights with us. Bridal Guide: Why did you choose Guana? Brandi Gill: The number-one reason we chose Guana was seclusion. We wanted a very private, remote place that offered activities and great food. Guana is everything you could want on a honeymoon. You can lay on a secluded beach while having lunch and cocktails served to you. Paddleboarding, hiking and snorkeling are all included in the package. And the staff is more than willing to help you set up your day. We’d never visited the island before, but when we both came home with the same place in mind after researching separately while at work, we knew it was the one. Bridal Guide: What was your favorite aspect of the island hideaway? Brandi: The surrounding nature is truly spectacular. The beaches, hiking trails and other secluded spots are beautiful. All the beaches are private and gorgeous. And the water temperature is perfect. Everything you need to snorkel, paddleboard or just sunbathe is always right there at your fingertips, as is someone to make you a fabulous drink. Bridal Guide: How did you spend your days? Brandi: We went hiking a few times; we went snorkeling. And we swam out to a sun deck in the middle of the cove and watched a big sea turtle. We also got a

One day, we hiked to a special place on the island where we discovered a gorgeous, secret snorkeling spot. Bridal Guide: Did you have any memorable meals? Brandi: The food is unbelievable! Every single meal was cooked to perfection. Everything is islandsourced. There’s always fish, fruit and delectable desserts. In the late afternoons, while swimming at the infinity pool, my husband and I had fresh ginger tea made by the chef. We’ve been trying to find a match for this tea since we got back—there’s nothing as fresh as that! On my birthday we had a candlelit dinner at a special location called The Garden of Eden. It was truly magical—surrounded by gorgeous tropical foliage and with amazing mountain and water views (room rates start at $720 a night and are all inclusive; guana.com). ¢
