PHOTOGRAPHY: SHELBY COOK POWELL PHOTOGRAPHY; BRIDESMAID DRESSES: THE DESSY GROUP

Congrats, you’re engaged! You’ve probably been dreaming of this day for a long time—with good reason! There’s no greater feeling than trying on a wedding gown and seeing yourself as a bride for the very first time. While wedding gown shopping in 2022 may look a little different, the experience can still feel just as special as it would have pre-pandemic. Read on for some tips!

Shop at Your Local Bridal Salon

Bridal salons offer the largest selection of reputable designers, styles, and colors. Your consultant will work directly with the designer to ensure everything from the color, to the fabric and the fit, are exactly what you envision. Not to mention, when you buy from a trusted, local bridal salon, you not only support your community, but also small businesses mostly owned by women!

Communicate With Your Consultant

A bridal consultant cannot read your mind, so be vocal about what you’re looking for, give honest opinions, and

tell her if you love a dress or not. You’ll be making both of your jobs easier. Not sure? Bring trusted family and friends—your “YES” moment will be that much sweeter!

ways to shop smart at a local salon. Many brick-and-mortar stores offer discounts at designer trunk shows, and host sample sales annually.

Make the Dress Your Own

If possible, leave plenty of time to shop, and be prepared to say “YES!” if you find a gown you love. Don’t forget to ask your consultant about delivery dates. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and supply chain issues, your dress may take longer to arrive. Short on time? Many bridal salons have off-the-rack sections where you can select a gorgeous gown and bring it home the same day.

The dress you try on in the store is just a starting point. Want to add a sleeve? Lower the back? Elongate the train? At a traditional bridal salon, you can work directly with the dress designer and an in-house seamstress to customize your gown and turn your dream into a reality.

ANSWERS

A

& Q

Wedding

Straight talk, smart solutions by Mary Clarke, Editor in Chief

Q

My partner and I would like to marry at a beach resort next summer. Any tips on colors and flower choices, as well as what we need to consider for our guests?

A

Summer weddings offer a great opportunity to select gorgeous in-season flowers like roses, sunflowers, hydrangeas, daisies, dahlias and zinnias to name a few. There are also fantastic colors and fun decor details to choose from. A nautical theme using navy blue and white is a classic for seaside celebrations, while sunny yellow and coral shades will brighten up any summer reception. Other popular colors include a mix of vivid tropical hues or shades of blue from aqua and sea-foam to turquoise. And all-white weddings with heaps of greenery work any time of the year. Most beach resorts have dedicated wedding coordinators who will help you with your decision making. You’ll be able to choose the colors, table decor and flowers that best suit your style via the wedding packages offered by many resorts. As for your guests, always keep them well-informed. Send out save-the-dates once you know the location and date, look into group rates, create a wedding website and prepare welcome bags that include an itinerary of events and any treats indigenous to the location. If you’re marrying outdoors and the weather will be hot and steamy, provide guests with cool drinks, bottled water, fans or paper parasols, and always, always have a Plan B—an indoor location— in case there’s bad weather. And don’t forget to pack your own day-of emergency kit that includes blotting tissues, sunscreen and makeup for touch-ups. 18 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Sept/Oct 2022

TUXEDO TUTORIAL

Q A

I’m confused. What’s the difference between tuxedo, black tie and formal?

Good question. Let’s start with “formal,” which dictates a more dressed-up look for both men and women. In other words, men wear tuxedos and women wear a cocktail or longer-length dress. The traditional “tuxedo” is a single- or double-breasted jacket with satin lapels that’s paired with formal trousers (those with a satin side stripe on the pant legs). You’ll find tuxedos available in a range of colors from white and ivory to navy, grey and black. “Black tie,” used for occasions that start after 6 p.m., dictates that men wear a tuxedo and women a cocktail-style or longer-length dress appropriate for a more formal celebration. RAISE THE BAR

Q

We’ve heard you can request different types of bar options from your caterer. How many types are there, is there a price difference and what do they offer?

A

The most common bar type is the open bar, which offers a variety of liquor, wine, beer and champagne and is paid for at a flat rate. This would be the most costly. You could save by having a consumption bar: Instead of paying a flat rate you would pay per drink at the end of the festivities. With a soft bar you definitely cut costs since no hard liquor is offered but guests can imbibe on red and white wine, champagne and beer. Another type to consider is the white bar, which features only pale beverages such as white wine, rum, gin and vodka. Costs can

Pink Shell Resort, Fort Myers, Florida.

vary with this type of bar, depending on your crowd size and the amount of liquor you’d need to provide. A dry bar is for non-drinkers and consists of sodas, juices, tea, etc.— anything non-alcoholic—but I’m guessing your guests will expect some libations. Be sure to cover all the details with your caterer. The service fee/gratuity is usually included in the contract but if not, tip your bartenders 15-20 percent of the final bar bill. SEND THANKS

Q

How much time do we have to

send out thank-you notes? My fiancé thinks it’s six months.

A

Thank-you notes should be sent within three months of the wedding date, so be sure to acknowledge any gifts you receive before then immediately. That way, you won’t be overwhelmed after the wedding. Plus, your guests will appreciate receiving a thank-you in a timely manner and not six months later. So be sure to put pen to paper soon after you return from the honeymoon and share the writing duties with your partner. You’ll have the task completed in no time! ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. And send your planning questions to us at mail@bridalguide.com.

founder and owner, Ang Weddings & Events

My Signature Style

• “I want my couples to look back on their weddings decades later and still love how they look and felt. They should be timeless in that way.”

“To see the smiles on my couples’ faces is priceless,” Tzo Ai says.

Inclusivity Matters

“My weddings are classic, with an understated elegance.”

• “I like supporting businesses owned by women and people of color. It is great fun to curate a team of the best wedding professionals to suit each of my clients.”

My Favorite Part of Planning

• “I really love the wedding day itself and the adrenaline and excitement it brings. We plan for many months, and sometimes years, for this one day, considering every small detail and putting together the best possible vendor team to make magic.”

Memorable Moment

• “We had a wedding in October where the father of the bride talked about me in his speech. It was so touching!” 36 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Sept/Oct 2022

A singular gift for building trust and managing relationships has been one of Tzo Ai Ang’s secrets to success. First, as vice president of a global investment bank, serving clients around the world. And since 2011, as founder and owner of Ang Weddings and Events, a boutique event planning company renowned for exquisite weddings, both intimate and grand, in and around NYC. Why weddings? “I was drawn to the meaningful nature of these celebrations,” says Tzo Ai, “the logistics, the planning and the creativity.” Whether the knot is tied at a storied NYC venue, such as The New York Public Library, Cipriani or Mandarin Oriental, or amidst the beauties of nature, such as historic Wave Hill with its breathtaking views of the Hudson River, Tzo Ai’s belief that “love is love” is on full display at every celebration.

Words of Wisdom

• “One thing I would love my couples to understand is that it doesn’t matter what everyone else does—you do you! Especially with how Covid has changed the landscape, I see more and more couples focus on what is important to them and worry less about what is traditionally done. This is a day celebrating the love of two people and the wedding should focus on that.”

Hope for the Future

• “I’m hopeful we’re getting one step closer to normal. Most of my weddings in 2022 are going to be over 200 guests, whereas in 2021 and 2020 I had smaller weddings ranging from 12 to 80 guests. I also have some Friday weddings coming up. Given the great demand for venues, I see lots of weekday weddings going forward.” An ethereal floral moment.

Numbers Are Up

• “I limit the number of weddings I plan a year to around 8, as I focus on full planning and dedicating lot of time and attention to each couple. I had 3 weddings in 2020, 7 weddings in 2021 and will have 8 weddings in 2022. I am currently booking for 2023.”

Safe Celebrations

• “Many of my couples have required all guests to be fully vaccinated to attend the wedding. I hope this will continue throughout 2022 to help keep everyone safe.” • “I still recommend doing plated dinners over self-service buffets. Reducing the touchpoints at a wedding is still a good idea. When there is an option to host the event outdoors or keep windows and doors open, that also helps with keeping everyone safe.”

Lessons Learned

• “It’s important to make sure that venue and vendor contracts are very clear about Covid reschedules and cancellations, along with safety measures like vaccinations. Going through this process, I’ve seen a very wide range in views on Covid risk.” • “You even get differing views within the host family! It is always good to talk through these things upfront and make sure that everyone is on the same page.”

Excitement Ahead “I’m still seeing a preference for outdoor celebrations,” Tzo Ai says.

• “I am really, really excited about getting back to big weddings and gathering my couples’ friends and family together. People are so ready to celebrate!” ➺ 37

Shannon’s designs “lean timeless and colorful.”

Father of the Bride. “I just remember being mesmerized by how they transformed a simple backyard into something magical.” Today Shannon has been working her own magic with her bespoke wedding planning business, launching Shannon Rose Events in 2015. Tapping into skills honed during her stint in architectural design, Shannon is renowned for creating unique, multi-event wedding weekends on private estates and ranches under wide-open skies throughout Texas and beyond.

SHANNON DUCKER, founder and owner, Shannon Rose Events

A fascination with transforming—and personalizing—spaces has always been part of Shannon Ducker’s DNA. Recalling her earliest design efforts, Texas-born Shannon says, “I remember creating floor plans for my friends in school, based on their interests. I would even create interior design boards by cutting out photos from magazines.” The loss of her mother during her senior year of college brought home the importance of embracing life and all its possibilities. Shannon was determined to go for it, to chase her dreams, “no matter how crazy they seemed,” starting with a 5+-year career in the field of architecture. But the world of weddings always beckoned. Like her passion for architecture, Shannon’s obsession with weddings began in childhood, sparked by watching the comedy classic 38 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Sept/Oct 2022

Favorite Moments

• “I had a wedding this fall in 2021 that I will never forget. The wedding was at the bride’s family ranch, where the bride’s father had built a barn on their property in hopes that one day his daughter would get married in the space.” • “While the barn skews rustic, the bride knew she wanted the celebration to be elegant and classic. Throughout the process I plotted ways of weaving the two styles together, and the moment the bride and her mom walked in the space they both started crying. The bride kept saying ‘Oh my gosh, I get it, I finally get it!’ It was a moment I will never forget!”

Feeling Safer

• “Now that people are feeling safer about social gatherings, especially in Texas, I am noticing that a lot of couples are more comfortable getting married in indoor spaces again.” • “Other couples have opted for outdoor events, to ensure guests

“I love that I get to bring to life something that most people didn’t know was possible,” Shannon says.

• “I create events that are not only refined and elegant, but also where guests feel comfortable and can let loose.” • “I use my architectural background to truly build weddings from the ground up. I can see a space’s potential in an instant— and then design an environment that will make your day one to remember.”

feel comfortable; but everyone is still able to enjoy the event without as many precautions as we had during the pandemic.”

Considered Celebrations A worthy welcome basket overflowing with edible goodies.

• “I am finding that couples are more open to the idea of smaller guest lists since the pandemic. Our average wedding in 2019 was 250 guests, while our average wedding for 2022 is150 guests.” • “While we have seen a lot of couples opt to create a full weekend experience for their guests, we have not been seeing a return to destination weddings just yet.”

My Favorite Wedding Tradition

Rustic meets classic elegance in this magical barn setting.

• “Private Last Dance. I love that it allows the couple to stay centered, and gives them a moment just for them to really soak up the last few moments of the day before they start their life together!”

My Favorite Part of Planning

• “Making renderings for clients and working on the floor plans. It’s where I feel like I really shine, since I get to incorporate my architectural background, and it’s when I can truly start to articulate what is in my head to clients.”

My Biggest Design Challenge This Year

• “Color! This year my clients are really loving color. It is honestly a good problem to have. I have found myself researching flower arrangements since florals are not only my biggest source of inspiration, they are a great way of looking at unique color combinations.”

Lessons Learned

• “Sometimes you have to learn how to ‘go with the flow’—that there are some things that are just out of your control. Learning this has allowed me to create deeper and stronger bonds with my couples, and to value their trust in me more than ever.”

I Am Most Excited About

• “More ranch weddings! I have couples opting for full weekend experiences at their family ranches, and I am excited to bring these to life, and create a unique spin on the typical ‘rustic’ event.”  39

YOU’RE SO FOCUSED ON PLANNING THE WEDDING, BUT WHAT ABOUT

all those other events leading up to the big day? The good news is, for the most part, you shouldn’t have to do much work for them. “Let your friends or family members have control over planning these parties—that’s their domain as members of your bridal party,” says Lindsay Longacre, owner and principal planner of LVL Weddings & Events in Irvine, California. “Trust them when it comes to decor, activities and food.” But if you’re looking to point them in the right direction, or just want to know what to

expect, use this pre-wedding party cheat sheet.

HOW’S INVITED? WHO HOSTS? HERE’S THE ETIQUETTE AND INTEL ON ALL YOUR PRE-WEDDING FESTIVITIES.

ENGAGEMENT PARTY WHAT IT IS: Exactly what it sounds like. Think of it as a kickoff to all the wedding events that will happen during your path to the altar. There aren’t many rules about what it has to be like, though it’s most popular to have a cocktail party at someone’s home or a favorite restaurant. WHO HOSTS: “An engagement party is often (but not always) hosted by one or both sets of parents,” says Karen Bussen, A-list event planner and designer of Simple Stunning Weddings for Palladium Hotels & Resorts. “If an aunt or a good friend wants to host the party, that’s fine too.” But don’t expect someone to host one for you. Engagement parties aren’t an obligation, and many couples today don’t have one at all. WHO ATTENDS: Usually, it’s the bridal party, family and close friends. Don’t feel like you have to invite a ton of people—it’s totally okay to keep this intimate. Just be careful not to invite anyone who won’t be on the wedding guest list. WHY HAVE IT: “These types of parties are a great way to gather together your close family and friends to celebrate your recent engagement.” says Longacre. It’s especially nice to have if your families don’t know each other well, so they can get better acquainted. WHEN TO DO IT: Soon after you get engaged—most ideally within three months—after all, that’s what the party’s all about. But you might want to wait until you’ve set a wedding date, says Bussen. “Everyone will ask when it is.” GOOD TO KNOW: “One thing you may want to do is have a small registry ready, since guests might want to give you an engagement present,” says Bussen. But remember that people are not obligated to bring gifts, so don’t be upset if guests arrive empty-handed.

For a super-fun idea, consider having a workshop shower. You can hire an expert to come in for an hour to teach your guests how to arrange flowers, do the samba or ice cupcakes. It's a great way to get everyone interacting. BRIDAL SHOWER WHAT IT IS: A shower is a way of honoring the bride-to-be, and “showering” her with gifts for her new married home. “For showers, there are usually three key components: refreshments, fun activities, like games or quizzes and the bride opening her gifts in front of her guests,” says Bussen, who is also the author of Simple Stunning Wedding Showers. WHO HOSTS: Classic etiquette rules state that the bride’s mom or sister isn’t supposed to host the shower, says Bussen. “But these days, more and more moms and sisters are acting as hostesses for these fun festivities, and it’s really a personal decision.” You might find that a relative offers to host one shower for you, and a friend offers to host a different, more laid-back bash, where you can invite your pals. Sometimes, co-workers will throw you a shower, too. It’s completely fine to have multiple showers. WHO ATTENDS: Usually, it’s close female friends and relatives—just how

big the guest list is should be up to you and your host. But the same rule goes for the shower as it does for the other pre-wedding parties: Don’t invite anyone you won’t invite to the actual wedding. “There is only one exception: an office shower. It is understood that you may not be able to invite all your co-workers to the wedding,” says Bussen. WHY HAVE IT: Not only does a shower provide the couple with things that can make their newlywed house more of a home, it’s another opportunity to socialize with family and friends. WHEN TO DO IT: Two to six months before the wedding is the ideal time, says Debi Lilly of A Perfect Event in Chicago. “Keep it spaced out from your wedding date.” That way, guests don’t feel like they’re going to so many wedding events right in a row. GOOD TO KNOW: “The bride absolutely must write a thank-you note to each guest, and it should be personalized,” says Bussen. ➺

BACHELOR PARTIES THAT AREN’T TACKY Your guy may not want the typical night of male debauchery. If he’s looking for more ideas, how about suggesting some of these? • CONCERT He and his friends can go see a favorite band—and even tailgate beforehand. • KARAOKE Some karaoke places have private rooms you can rent out for parties, so anyone who sings only has to do it in front of friends. • OKTOBERFEST In the fall, plenty of restaurants and organizations put together these rollicking festivals with lots of beer and food tasting. • SPORTING EVENTS A group trip to a favorite baseball, football or basketball team’s game is a perfect idea for a sports fan. • GOLF OUTING, FISHING ADVENTURE OR CAMPING He can pick whatever outdoor activity he and his buddies are most into.

41

Your rehearsal dinner theme can range from a pool party or beachside clambake to a swanky cocktail soirée. Have fun with it!

BACHELORETTE PARTY WHAT IT IS: Girl bonding. “Some people see the bachelorette party as a time for the bride to get ‘wild’ with her bridal party and maybe a couple other close friends,” says Longacre. But they don’t necessarily need to go all out. For some, it’s an excuse to get together with girlfriends for some female-only fun. Some groups go on a weekend getaway to somewhere exciting like Napa or Las Vegas. Others just plan a classic girls’ night out. WHO HOSTS: “The maid or matron of honor is responsible for planning and organizing the bachelorette party,” says Bussen. “All the bridal attendants are expected to help with the planning.” WHO ATTENDS: Usually the bridesmaids, and maybe some other close girlfriends of the bride. “Destination bachelorette parties can mean a smaller group, since there will be travel costs,” says Bussen. 42 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Sept/Oct 2022

WHY HAVE IT: To let loose a little and have fun! Here you are spending time and energy planning your wedding. Isn’t it a great idea to unwind and chill out with your BFFs? WHEN TO DO IT: It’s a big no-no to have your bachelorette party within two weeks of your wedding. Your plate will be filled with to-dos at that point, and you don’t want to risk any partiedout bridal-party members on the big day. One to three months beforehand is a better idea. GOOD TO KNOW: “The key here is to design a party that suits the honoree,” says Bussen. “Not everyone wants a wild experience.” And take note: “I recommend not posting bacheloretteparty photos to Facebook, Instagram or other social-sharing sites where work colleagues, for example, could see them.” And make sure your partygoers know not to, as well.

WHAT IT IS: Most couples have a wedding rehearsal, where bridal-party members and parents (and grandparents) of the bride and groom gather together to practice their roles in the ceremony. Afterward, there’s often a dinner to celebrate with those VIPs. WHO HOSTS: “Traditionally, the rehearsal dinner has always been hosted by the groom’s family,” says Bussen. “But these days, some couples prefer to host this dinner themselves or to have both sets of parents co-host.” WHO ATTENDS: “In the past, this was just the bridal party and the immediate families of the bride and groom,” says Bussen. “But now, some people like to include out-of-town guests as well, since these folks may have come a long way to be with you on your wedding day.” WHY HAVE IT: You’ll have your nearest and dearest with you to celebrate more intimately than you likely will on your wedding day. Often, the rehearsal dinner is filled with speeches and toasts from family members and friends, and the bride and groom present gifts to the wedding party members and parents, thanking them for their help. WHEN TO DO IT: Usually the night before the wedding, or two nights before the wedding, directly after the rehearsal. If you’re not having a rehearsal, it’s okay to still have a rehearsal dinner. You might want to call it a “welcome dinner.” GOOD TO KNOW: If it’s the day before the wedding, best not to plan this party to take place too late at night, since most people will want to be well-rested for the wedding. Consider hiring a photographer to come to this bash, since it’s often a very meaningful event. 

for the day of the wedding. Guests who are stuck at the airport or lost en route to the ceremony site should be able to ask someone for assistance—but that someone should not be you. “Guests don’t want to bother the bride while she’s getting her hair done, but they might not have anyone else’s HINT: number,” says California-based Set aside time alone wedding planner Melody Walker. (or with your fiancé) to decompress with a “Ask your wedding planner or few gentle, basic one of your bridesmaids to field yoga techniques. last-minute texts and calls.” Namaste... You need to stay focused and calm (and so does your hairstylist!). ASK YOUR LOVED ONES to share stories of their wedding disasters. Bride tripped halfway down the aisle? Flower girl brawled with the ring bearer? Everyone has a tale to tell, because something tends to go wrong at nearly every wedding. Listening to these anecdotes helps you keep your sense of humor and reminds you that these little mishaps make the memories you’ll share with your grandchildren someday. AGREE ON A “SAFE WORD” for family gatherings. Make a plan with stay-calm your groom before the guests arrive. Then, if you’re cornered by his crazy Uncle Gus and subjected to a political rant, you can simply turn to your beloved, murmur “licorice,” and wait for his extraction team to come to your rescue. GO BACK THROUGH your emails and texts and re-read the messages you and your fiancé sent to each other when you started dating. Remember why you fell in love, and dream about the future. And while you’re at it, send him a little love note to remind him that you’re thrilled to be his bride. DON’T GO NUTS—EAT THEM! “Plan to have some protein available in the bridal party’s dressing room,” suggests Walker. She recommends prepping for your walk down the aisle with light snacks that are healthful, filling and non-staining, such as string cheese and raw almonds or cashews. MAKE ARRANGEMENTS to spend the night before the wedding at a hotel near your venue. This gives you a chance to have some much-needed alone time on the morning before the ceremony. A little bit of solitude will make the upcoming celebration that much sweeter. HOP INTO A BUBBLE BATH with a book. The warm water will soothe the aches after all those hours in high heels, and a novel offers a mental mini-vacation. Read only the first few chapters and save the rest for the plane ride to your honeymoon destination.

mid the whirlwind of those seemingly endless lastminute preparations, take time to relax and reflect on what matters most: friends, family, and of course, fun! Whether it’s a moment of Zen by your lonesome or happy hour with the girls, every bride needs a few strategies to step out of the spotlight and enjoy the moment.

1.

LOAD UP YOUR PHONE with a “Wedding Countdown” play-list to keep you energized and positive. Think of this as your emotional pacifier—it’s basically impossible to be in a bad mood while lip-syncing to “Uptown Funk.” If all else fails, break out the heavy artillery: ABBA and old-school Britney Spears. SET ASIDE FIVE MINUTES every day for some “lite yoga.” Minneapolis-based yoga instructor Catherine Justice recommends the following visualization exercise: Sit cross-legged on the floor with your back against a wall in a cool, quiet room. Send out kind thoughts to someone you love deeply, someone you’re having conflict or emotional difficulty with—and yourself. “Your wedding is exciting, but it’s also stressful,” Catherine says. “While you’re trying to accommodate everyone else’s needs, remember to also take care of yourself.” “WINE DOWN” WITH YOUR BFFS. Hit the local wine shop and stock up on vino with whimsical labels. Suggestions: True Love Riesling, Bliss Chardonnay, or Princess Moscato. (If you’re feeling feisty, try Wit’s End Shiraz!)

incorporate into your menu flavors that have meaning for you that you’d like to share with others. It’s a wonderful way to make your wedding your wedding.

A MARRIAGE OF TASTES I have planned many weddings where a bride and groom from different cultures served food that “married” their heritages. One way that I like to do it is by setting up two buffets, each dedicated to food from one of the countries. I did a wedding with one buffet of dishes from Venezuela and the other from Ukraine. I thoroughly enjoyed the way this helped guests interact. Another suggestion: Perhaps you both love Thanksgiving dinner—go ahead and serve your version of Thanksgiving-style food at your wedding. On your printed menus you can explain the personal meaning behind your food choices, so that guests can get a taste of your wedding story. Another way to do this is through food favors; perhaps you’ll give your favorite childhood cookies (with a recipe), wrapped in a small tin, or apples in a bag with a family recipe for apple pie. No matter what kind of cuisine you have in mind, be sure to schedule a tasting with your caterer.

ON THE MENU

Y

Celebrations and wedding expert David Tutera serves up his best tips on how to create an unforgettable meal.

ou probably already know that food and drink will add up to a large part of your overall budget, so the question is, how can you make your wedding repast worth every bite? I feel strongly that what you serve can and should be special. When you carefully and thoughtfully create your menu, you will find that food can: • Contribute to the telling of your personal wedding story • Complement the overall design and color scheme of your wedding

• Recreate, through visuals and flavors, special memories

PHOTOGRAPHY: (FROM TOP) RAFAEL PAIVA; MARING VISUALS

FOOD FOR THOUGHT As with most families, many of my family’s traditions began at the dinner table. I’ll always remember my grandmother’s meatballs; I loved them, and to this day I miss them very much. One time, while on vacation in Positano, Italy, I ordered a dish of meatballs at a restaurant. When I took my first bite, something came over me. The taste made me feel wonderful. It was as if Nana were in the kitchen and had cooked them just for me. Flavors of food, like the sounds of music, can release powerful feelings. So at your wedding, be sure to

DELICIOUS STYLE When we see something visually appealing, we react differently than we do to something that isn’t attractive. No one wants to eat a meal that’s all brown and beige, with no thought given to how it looks. Your food should look as good as it tastes so that your guests “eat with their eyes first,” as I like to say. Start things off with a course that makes a beautiful statement. I recently devised a color-cued first course for a lavender and purple wedding: purple raviolis! It was not only unique and beautiful but delicious. Bon appetit! ¢

GET INTO THE SPIRITS Specialty drinks can provide color, drama and flavor to your wedding. Going with a pink color scheme? Serve a rose-colored martini. Red sangria is great for an Italian-style wedding. Use your nicknames to name your specialty drink or the name of a favorite place or something else that tells your story. In addition to serving it from the bar, waiters should pass trays of your specialty drinks and be prepared to explain what its name means. Hint: Don't forget the garnishes!

Trim your budget with the expert advice at bridalguide.com/budget

NORTHEAST BUDGET BREAKDOWN

VENUE: 16% When deciding on the right locale, Brooklyn-based wedding planner and designer Jove Meyer calls “getting clarity on costs” the first order of business. “Some venues have no rental fee, just a food and beverage minimum, whereas others don’t do food and only make money on venue rentals.” A full-service venue that includes food, beverage, staff and space often helps the budget, Meyer says.

Average wedding cost NYC metro • $42,831*

FOOD AND BEVERAGE: 31% Outside of reducing the guest count, Meyer suggests exploring other creative cost-saving measures. For instance, forego appetizer stations in favor of passed appetizers during the cocktail hour or downsize from a fully stocked open bar to a limited bar featuring select beers and wines. PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO: 16% Meyer suggests couples book an eight-hour minimum for photo and video coverage. “But 10 hours if you want full coverage of getting ready through dancing,” he notes. Booking one company that shoots both photo and video rather than two separate teams can spur savings. ENTERTAINMENT: 5% Entertainment costs will shift dramatically if couples select a live band over a DJ. For those dead set on a band, which can cost about five times more than a DJ, Meyer recommends sticking with the core band members and being mindful of their time.

BUDGET BREAKDOWN

Average wedding cost Charlottesville VA metro • $24,768*

VENUE: 25% Charlottesville, VA-based wedding planner Alana Futcher of Chancey Charm Weddings urges couples to take advantage of the region’s many venues capable of accommodating the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception. “You can give your guests different experiences at one location and often capture some savings, too,” she says. FOOD AND BEVERAGE: 35% Futcher recommends couples carefully review the caterer’s proposal to see if there are any menu items that require special equipment for prep or extra staff for serving—both of which add extra costs. PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO: 15% While couples might initially balk at allday coverage, Futcher often finds it’s the better way to go. “Couples often need more time and booking extra hours on the day-of instead of beforehand can be costly.” *Source: TheWeddingReport.com

For the ceremony and cocktail hour, for example, couples might pipe in a playlist through the venue’s speakers instead of having live music. RENTALS: 16% Rentals like tables, chairs and linens can be both functional and decorative. For the budget conscious, Meyer suggests chairs that work for both the ceremony and dinner, favoring on-site rentals. And, for those really seeking savings, consider disposable dinnerware for buffets or beach weddings—chic options abound, from sustainable bamboo to glossy acrylic. “Just keep the glassware,” Meyer says. FLOWERS: 16% A living product requiring staff, storage and transportation, flower costs frequently surprise couples. Meyer offers these tips: Instead of full bouquets, have your ’maids hold a single bloom, a fan or other pretty prop, and avoid any floral arrangements that require on-site construction.

ENTERTAINMENT: 7.5% Go for entertainment that does double duty, Futcher says, such as those who can play music and serve as the evening’s emcee. Booking a band? Then, inquire about additional music options for the ceremony and cocktail hour, which will often be more affordable than bringing in a separate entertainment provider. And don’t forget to ask about the inclusion of sound systems. “You don’t want to have to rent a sound system at the last minute,” Futcher says. RENTALS: 10% As with catering, the guest count can intensify rental costs—more chairs, more linens and so on. A venue with chairs, tables and the like included in the price frequently spurs savings compared to renting such items. “See what equipment rentals are already included in your venue and, most importantly, clarify what needs to be

brought in,” Futcher says. FLOWERS: 7.5% It’s a universal, often-overlooked floralbudget truth: “The more bridesmaids and groomsmen you have, the more bouquets and boutonnieres you need,” says Futcher. “And the more guests you have, the more table centerpieces you need.” Ask the florist for ideas on what pieces from the ceremony can be repurposed for the reception—just be sure to monitor the fees for moving flowers between locations. ➺ 47

MIDWEST BUDGET BREAKDOWN

Average wedding cost Chicago metro • $33,846*

VENUE: 15% When comparing venues, Kate Reavey, owner of Chicago Vintage Weddings, urges couples to consider the overall value, not simply the final tally. A venue with tables and chairs, a stage and a quality sound system on hand might cost more than raw space, but ultimately prove more cost effective since those items won’t need to be rented. Still, Reavey encourages budgetary vigilance. Some venues, she says, have “hidden costs” like strict vendor lists or in-house services that might not be “as flexible or affordable as couples would like.” FOOD AND BEVERAGE: 50% With food and beverage service greatly impacting the overall guest experience, couples are right to invest in it. Still, Reavey suggests couples ask caterers about their most affordable meal format. In some cases, plated meals might be more economical because fewer rentals

are needed compared to a buffet or family-style meal. PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO: 14% If couples love an established professional whose fee is simply too high, Reavey suggests asking that pro about more economical associates, perhaps someone the pro trained. Also, review the contract regarding digital rights. “This will allow you to make your own prints and albums instead of having to order them through your photographer,” Reavey says. ENTERTAINMENT: 8% Whether a couple chooses a DJ or a band, Reavey recommends asking the music pros if they will work with the venue’s sound system. “Just because it’s available doesn’t mean they’ll want to use it, and that will drive up costs,” she says, noting that many music pros prefer the reliability of their own equipment.

RENTALS: 8% Though optional, Reavey says fun extras like vintage lounge furniture and photo booths add to a reception’s vibe without breaking the budget. In some cases, these goodies can be available from existing vendors. “So, ask,” Reavey says. FLOWERS: 8% Reavey advises selective extravagance. “You don’t need giant centerpieces on every table,” she says. “Instead, have some showpieces and keep the rest more modest. This will save a lot of money and provide a pleasing texture and variety to your wedding style.”

SOUTHWEST

VENUE: 15% Houston-based wedding planner Skylar Caitlin of Chancey Charm Weddings says many notable venues in the Southwest offer more than raw space. That’s a plus, as it means many items are conveniently and affordably factored into the venue costs. FOOD AND BEVERAGE: 50% Given catering’s hefty costs, Caitlin urges couples to prioritize. If premium liquor is paramount, then consider a buffet dinner to offset costs. If a grandiose display cake 48 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Sept/Oct 2022

Average wedding cost Houston metro • $33,330*

isn’t important, then consider a dessert table or a cost-effective sheet cake paired with a more modest three-tier display cake. And rather than trying to slash catering costs to the bones, investigate trades such as swapping the salad course with additional cocktail-hour hors d’oeuvres. PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO: 10% Avoid selecting the photographer’s lowest option package, which often fails to provide enough hours of coverage and excludes extras you may end up wanting. “You can chat with them about removing items like prints or albums, but remember that adding these on later will typically cost more when they are not a part of the package,” Caitlin says. ENTERTAINMENT: 9% DJ’s, Caitlin reminds couples, will almost always be more cost-effective than bands, where costs can escalate if lighting or a stage is needed. For those dreaming of live

music, however, Caitlin proposes bypassing full-fledged bands in favor of string quartets or small acoustic groups who can play during the ceremony or cocktail hour. RENTALS: 6% According to Caitlin, minimizing the rental budget starts with selecting a venue that doesn’t need a lot of “dressing up.” “Draping, false walls and replacing unsightly banquet chairs can add up fast,” she says. She suggests pushing the rental budget toward high-impact places, such as a backdrop for the band or higherquality linens. FLOWERS: 10% Provide a color palette, your likes and dislikes and then give way to the professionals, Caitlin says. But do tell the florist you want to reduce and recycle. Bridesmaids’ bouquets can double as flowers at the reception bar while the ceremony’s floral wall can later serve as a photo backdrop.

Average wedding cost LA metro • $41,243*

VENUE: 20% The Western U.S. offers an array of desirable, picturesque venues, though those with ocean views carry a premium price, reports Jen Bergmark, owner of First Pick Planning in Manhattan Beach, CA. Yet many venues do not include rentals, which means every element of the wedding needs to be brought in—which can add up. While a full-service venue can lower costs, so, too, can a weekday wedding. For those less traditional couples, a non-weekend wedding can provide substantial cost savings, even at some of the most sought-after venues, Bergmark says. FOOD AND BEVERAGE: 30% Bergmark isn’t one to support food and beverage service as a money-saving area. After all, cutting corners and veering away from a professional caterer with reliable, qualified staff can affect a wedding’s vibe

and hamper the guest experience. Still, Bergmark says, “Your caterer can suggest cost-cutting suggestions without compromising quality of service or food.” PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO: 12% Reminding that pictures and videos are long-term testaments to the wedding day, Bergmark cautions couples against choosing inexperienced, inexpensive photographers. “While a lower rate might look appealing at first, in the end you’ll want your wedding photos to reflect the technical skills only an experienced photographer has to capture those special moments accurately and beautifully,” she says. ENTERTAINMENT: 6% Though a live band will almost always cost more than a DJ, Bergmark doesn’t think that should preclude live musicloving couples from booking musicians. “It doesn’t have to be all or nothing,” she

says. Couples can mix and match. Perhaps a live band kicks off the night with one set before giving way to a DJ to close the evening. RENTALS: 20% When it comes to rentals, particularly at a venue that requires various extras, Bergmark suggests creating a priority list. “Know your deal-breaker items, but also have realistic expectations of items you would be okay not having in order to adhere to the budget,” she says. FLOWERS: 12% Given the prevalence of outdoor weddings on the West Coast, Bergmark says couples can utilize their surroundings to stretch the budget. “Less is sometimes more,” she says. To save, Bergmark recommends providing the florist creative freedom to make alternative suggestions, as many pros can share thoughts on cost-effective alternatives or ways to repurpose flowers throughout the wedding day. Garlands, for example, can easily transition from the ceremony to reception decor.  49

REAL COUPLES

TWICE AS NICE Rachel Horvath and KC Eboh’s Hudson Valley wedding was a double attraction—featuring both Western and Nigerian ceremonies in a lively blending of cultures. PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN ROSE PHOTOGRAPHY

RACHEL AND KC MET AS FRESHMEN ATHLETES ON DAY ONE OF PRESEASON AT NEW YORK UNIVERSITY, becoming close friends “with a little flirting.” By sophomore year, after trying to set up two friends, they began dating each other “and the rest was history,” the couple tells us. Five years later, KC, now a management consultant, popped the question to Rachel, a former gallery director now finishing up her masters in curatorial studies at Bard College. Says KC: “I proposed en route to our five-year anniversary weekend away, where Rachel had planned a romantic stay at Troutbeck, an historic estate in Amenia, New York—(spoiler alert: it’s where we ended up getting married!).” Choosing the same spot for their wedding was a no-brainer. “We were inspired by our trips upstate during our dating years,” Rachel says. “We wanted our wedding weekend to reflect these memories of reprieve and charm.”

A sweet moment alone. 68 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Sept/Oct 2022

Like so many other Covid-era weddings, KC and 3 Rachel’s, originally planned for October, was rescheduled for May. But instead of scrapping Rachel’s vision for a rich, autumnal color palette, planner Victoria Lartey-Williams of Victorious Events NYC, @viceventsnyc suggested replacing a few darker shades of burgundy with the likes of coral1 and dusty rose. 1 Troutbeck’s iconic garden archway featured in many of the paper details by Longest Time Design. 2 The bridesmaids were free to choose their own dresses in sunlit shades of coral, peach and rose. 3 A closer look at Rachel’s lacy confection by Monique Lhuillier. 4 Flower girls Lily and Emma make their way down the aisle. 5 The lush florals designed and executed by Sprig and Social, @sprigandsocial.

Flower-filled lanterns dotted the aisle, with a bed of rose petals carpeting its length. 4 Vases at the dining tables held the same flowers. 3

WINE TIME

Take the guesswork out of choosing the perfect bottle with these expert tips. by Jenna Mahoney. “EGAD, THE WINE LIST!” IS THE FIRST THING THAT GOES THROUGH MY HEAD Each time I am handed the book of beverages at a restaurant. Most of the time, I cross my fingers and hope one of my dining mates will pick the perfect bottle, other times I’m so unsure of how to talk to the wine steward, I skip the process entirely. Since I refuse to believe I’m alone in this behavior, I got some oenophiles (wine experts) to share the art of picking the best bottle for your romantic honeymoon dinner. Cheers!

The charming Inn at Perry Cabin.

WITH GORGEOUS GROUNDS AND EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE MARINAS, THESE POSTCARD-PERFECT HOTELS PROMISE THE BEST OF LAND AND SEA. BY JENNA MAHONEY

Gurney’s Star Island Resort & Marina

Sunrise at this 107-room luxury resort at the edge of Long Island is a special moment. As the sky brightens, the sunlight kisses the property-edging water to a shimmer and all the boats in the eponymous marina take on a special glow. Gaze upon the peaceful scene from your balcony, at the pool terrace, on the patio of Showfish (the hotel’s standout eatery), or a bit farther afield on the shoreline of the resort’s intimate cove. Days here are spent exploring the aforementioned amenities, as well as at an indoor pool, a watersports center and on bike trips to Montauk’s Lighthouse, among other local attractions (room rates start at $800 a night; gurneys.com).

Yachts docked at The Landings Resort & Spa.

INN AT PERRY CABIN This historic property of just 88 rooms located less than three hours from New York City, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Annapolis is a gem of a hideaway that feels far-flung from the buzz of the capital cities. Set on the banks of the Miles River of the Chesapeake Bay, this hideaway embodies the coastal charm of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. An intimate private marina houses a fleet of sailboats and a new-to-the-property vintage skipjack (a traditional regional oyster boat) that are available for private excursions (the sunset dinner is honeymoon-perfect) and events (host a welcome toast for your wedding for a memorable moment). And yes, if it all looks familiar—it is— Wedding Crashers was filmed here (room rates start at $488 a night; innatperrycabin.com).

THE LANDINGS RESORT & SPA Sail to the Caribbean island of St. Lucia and dock your boat at one of the 17 slips. All hotel amenities, including onboard food and spa services are accessible to guests who choose to bring their boats here. For those without a yacht, the breezy guest rooms promise views of the marina, which is positioned at the heart of the luxury property. Ocean activities— fishing, snorkeling, sunset sailing—can all be arranged from the port too. The hotel’s concierge also organizes land-based island excursions, with a climb up the emblematic Pitons being the most popular (room rates start at $346 a night and include breakfast; landingsstlucia.com).

The Cottages at the Boat Basin More than 240 slips line the marina at the edge of town on Nantucket, the country’s former whaling capital. It is here that visitors are first welcomed to the tiny island that’s known for its biking as much as it is for its dunes and lighthouses. Perched above the port is a collection of 24 suites and cottages, all with kitchens and complimentary use of bicycles, among other perfect-for-island-life amenities like access to fishing gear. Guests are just a block from the cobblestoned streets that are lined with shops, eateries that excel in fresh-caught seafood and historic emporiums including Murray’s Toggery, home to the distinctive Nantucket Reds, an exclusive shade of pants/shorts immortalized in The Preppy Handbook (room rates start at $275 a night; thecottagesnantucket.com).

Modern meets classical at this new 40-room retreat on the shores of one of the most storied lakes in the world. Standing on an ancient series of stone arches, the hotel is a showpiece of the inventive architectural and design styles currently happening in Italy. It’s light, airy and inviting—a celebration of natural glass, wood and stone. In addition to an impressive infinity pool that extends over the lake, the hideaway is home to an exclusive dock where two classic yet high-design boats welcome guests to all manner of Como outings (room rates start at about $1,012 a night and include breakfast; serenohotels.com).

FUN FACT: It is said the word yacht comes from the Dutch jaght, which means hunter. The country’s navy used these fast-sailing vessels to hunt pirates.

On the shimmering Adriatic, ensconced in a UNESCO World Heritage Site and blissfully removed from the over-touristed shores of the region, sits this exclusive resort with impeccable service. A 238-berth marina with docks large enough for superyachts splays across the landscape that also includes a photogenic pool and a number of sea-view eateries (room rates start at $720 a night; oneandonlyresorts.com).  9

REAL DESTINATION WEDDING

ATLANTA ONE LOCAL COUPLE EMBRACED THE HISTORY OF THEIR CITY AS THEY HOSTED AN INTIMATE GROUP OF FAMILY TO SWAP VOWS IN A CEREMONY THAT WAS UNIQUELY THEM.

Camille and Giovanni made a decision to cancel their wedding for a family-focused ceremony.

CAMILLE WALTON AND GIOVANNI GARIBALDI hired a planner to curate their big day. Yet as the pandemic raged on, they cut not only their guest list but also their planned celebration. Instead, they wed in a local space Camille discovered online. “The exposed brick, large windows and natural light matched the aesthetic of our original venue,” says Camille of Constellations, a studio and event space in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood. Already sold on the look of the venue, Camille was impressed with its history.“As a Black woman in the city, learning that this building was a significant part of the civil rights era resonated,” she says. “It was the former home for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and John Lewis’s office was within those walls—it’s pretty amazing.”

Jumping the broom was a symbolic rite for marriage of enslaved couples.

All the details were locally sourced.

“My mom had a pearl necklace that belonged to my late paternal grandmother,” says Camille. “As a way of honoring her spirit, and making her presence felt, we sewed the pearls into the ribbon that we tied around the stems of my bouquet,” she explains. “It was really so special and such a nice touch. I was the first person in my family to do this, but I think it’s a tradition that could live on.”

The couple wrote their vows.

NEW TRADITIONS

One of Camille’s favorite photos of the day.

A city as large as Atlanta has an excellent variety of restaurants. Yet among all the options, Camille and Giovanni have a special spot. “Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q is our favorite (especially my husband’s)! He finds it to truly be the best barbecue in the city, and always wants to go there for their pulled pork,” Camille says. ➺

The couple’s first look was one of the bride’s favorite moments.

“The ferris wheel in downtown Atlanta seems corny, but it’s such a fun attraction and a staple of the area. You see it in many photos or paintings of downtown, and if you choose to actually ride it, you get an incredible bird’s-eye view of the city.”

CAMILLE AND GIOVANNI HAD A SIMPLE DAY SURROUNDED WITH LOVE. They served cupcakes and champagne to their 25 guests who all live locally. Still, they had moments that were among the most special. Writing their own vows onenobis LoSedwas mostion aut ipsaper rorpor treasured touch, as was their first look. “I’d say it was a top moment,” remembers Camille. “It was such a quiet, personal moment between just the two of us, without any outside noise or eyes,” she adds. “At Constellations, we really fell in love with the library space—it’s such a beautiful room,” she says of the space where she and Giovanni did their first look. “The large windows provide so much natural light, complemented by the warmth of a velvet couch. The colors really matched our aesthetic and felt so romantic.”

14 HONEYMOON GUIDE Sept/Oct 2022

For a different perspective, the couple enjoys hiking at nearby Stone Mountain Park. Located about 20 minutes from Decatur (a city just to the northeast of Atlanta), the natural expanse, filled with old growth trees and wildlife including foxes and deer, has 15 miles of trails including one that climbs to the summit. About the mile climb Camille says, “it’s fun and a good workout and the view is unmatched.”

legally wed

The couple felt surrounded by love.

Marriage licenses are required in the state of Georgia. Couples must be 18 years or older to apply and must do so in person. Licenses are issued by county probate courts and cost about $60; discounts are available if the couple completes a premarital course. Proof of age, and if applicable a divorce decree or death certificate, are required along with the payment. There is no waiting period.

hen you’ve raced around the world together—literally—how do you choose the destination for your ultimate adventure, your honeymoon? For season 32 Amazing Race winners William (Will) Jardell and James Wallington, who got engaged on the show and celebrated their marriage with a memorable party in New Orleans, that answer came in the form of witnessing some of the world’s most spectacular wildlife in an untouched environment. “The animals that call the Galapagos Islands home are some of the most unique in the whole world and we wanted to be able to see them in their natural habitat, especially the famous blue-footed booby,” they say. The couple, who are currently based in Los Angeles, explored the “otherworldly” locale—a collection of protected islands and islets off the coast of “The most InstagramEcuador—aboard the inaugural nine-day sailing mable spot was on of Hurtigruten Expeditions, a small ship cruise South Plaza Island company that excels in once-in-a-lifetime shore where the ground was excursions, personalized service, pampering covered with gorgeous amenities, luxurious accommodations and red sea grass or excellent onboard dining. The fact that Hurtigruten Expeditions’ new nine-day itinerary allowed us to make stops at each of the islands and see such beautiful places was a huge part of our decision. WJ & JW: Each island offers a different landscape to experience, different animals to see and a completely new view of the islands’ natural beauty. Every day, Hurtigruten Expeditions offers hikes and excursions with naturalist guides. The hikes were a perfect way to see the animals. It is incredible to see how unphased they are by humans. It is rare that an animal will run away from you, which is unlike anywhere else in the world. Another excursion we really enjoyed was kayaking around a number of island bays. A few times, we saw sea turtles breaching near the kayak, and very often a sea lion would pop their head above the water. Snorkeling was also a highlight. We saw reef sharks, sea lions, sea turtles, sting rays, and so many beautiful and colorful fish. BG: Did you have any favorite animal encounters?

WJ & JW: We made a stop on the island of Santa Cruz, where we saw roaming giant tortoises grazing. It was incredible to be driving along and see so many enormous animals around the island. Here in the States we have tons of squirrels running around but in the Galapagos Islands, the giant tortoise is just as free and just as numerous. We particularly enjoyed seeing the sea lions. We kept calling them dogs because their behavior towards humans and towards each other reminded us of dogs. They weren’t scared of people and would swim right by us. When we looked into their eyes we really felt the similarities to dogs, the masters of puppy-dog eyes. BG: Were there any other standout moments from your visit to the archipelago? “Other excursions available are bike riding on Santa Cruz island, visiting a tortoise sanctuary, paddle boarding, walking around the Charles Darwin Research Station and so many incredible hikes.”
